Best 10 perfumes of 2023

Best 10 Fragrances for 2023

Live events are my way to meet brands and discover new scents. 2023 started with the launch party for Parfums de Marly’s Valaya which immediately was a lock for my Top Ten list, Trends I found striking: Vanilla trending (again) with D.S.& Durga’s Deep Dark Vanilla being one of the more complex versions released this year. Clean scents rose in currency. I fell for Ourside Nostalgia Eau De Parfum (Composed by Darryl Do of the Delbia Do Fragrance Lab). Bespoke and custom fragrance-making keep gaining in popularity judging by Olfactory NYC’s expansion with their custom blend-your-own fragrance process and Glossier You, a fragrance formulated with notes that work with one’s skin’s temperature to unfold throughout the day. Both brands resonate with a younger demographic. Lastly, tobacco as a note has roared back judging by several year-end releases. At the end of the day, you can’t smell everything you want but if you try sometimes, well, you might smell what you need. Top 10 in no particular order:

10 Best fragrances for 2023

collage by Olya Bar©

D.S.& Durga Deep Dark Vanilla (David Moltz): I adore patchouli and love vanilla. Vanilla is a note not generally associated with David Moltz. I was curious. No sweetness here. And Patchouli? This is not the head shop kind of the hippie generation. The aromas here are extremely rich, deep, and earthy. Leans masculine (but all the women are wearing it). A complex one indeed. @dsanddurga

Parfums de Marly Valaya (Quentin Bisch): Just gorgeous. Valaya, one of the first fragrance launches of the year was a lock on my Top Ten out of the gate. This modern sensual musk is ethereally soft and creamy. Caresses your skin. The Bergamot and White Peach flows into the Orange Flower and Vetiver is just divine. white floral envelopes you. The powerful citrus and vanilla work beautifully together. This is a compliment-getter. A scent to impress. @parfumsdemarly @quentinbischperfumer

Maison Francis Kurkdjian Aqua Media Cologne Forte Eau de Parfum (Francis Kurkdjian): The fourth release from the Cologne Forte Collection, Aqua Media, a more citrus and green spin than aqua (which is fine for me) is nice and bright and aromatic This one grew on me. Smooth and easy. A modern summer fragrance on repeat. Let the sunshine in! @maisonfranciskurkdjian

TOM FORD Myrrhe Mystere (Rodrigo Flores-Roux): Just in time for the cold weather. Myrrhe Mystère from the Private Blend Collection embraces Myrrh and more Myrrh. Not too sweet, not too groundbreaking but just right on me. Maybe my Catholic upbringing drew me in. A dry amber that’s dark, smoky, and resiny. Alluring yet warm and smooth. Watch out, you will get followed! @tomfordbeauty @rodrigofloresroux

Aedes de Venustas Café Tabac (Bertrand Duchaufour): An early Christmas present just dropped and, in my opinion, the last significant release of the year. As the saying goes, timing is everything and the timing is right now for this wonder. The name was inspired by the iconic 90s bar in the East Village and scented synchronicity as later Co-owner Robert Gerstner was traveling with Bertrand Duchaufour in the Dominican Republic and while in a cigar factory, he asked Duchaufour, “Can you bottle this,” and he indeed he did. This sensual wonder is homage to tobacco, but is a multi-layered wonder. @aedes_de_venustas #bertrandduchaufour

Ormonde Jayne Arabesque Eau De Parfum (Ormonde Jayne Studio): Arabesque is the latest release from the Four Corners of the Earth collection. Here I am transported on a journey to the Middle East. The elegant underflow of the Oudh and rose is fresh and elegant with jasmine giving it just a hint of decadence. Linda Pilkington and her studio have constructed a timeless perfume that is perfect for all seasons and day and night. And how good is that!  @ormondejayne

Thameen Fanfare Cologne Elixir (Bruno Jovanovic): Love the juicy Citrus Accord. Classy and classic, brisk and aromatic, floral and lively. A grown-up scent. Vermouth! Well balanced. Please, take me to the Flower market. This was on speed dial over my Spring and Summer. Sunny days with a hint of dark clouds for good measure. The first in the Britcologne Collection. Hooray! @thameenfragrance  @cchonguk  @brunojovanovichperfumer

Abel Black Anise (Isaac Sinclair): This might be a take-it-or-leave-it scent. I take it. Oddly enough, I get a Pomegranate note here. Maybe it’s just the Black Anise camped out on the cassis. That must be it. A vigorous smoky amber that has a rich sensuality to it at all at once. And that late-night smoky tobacco is an audacious head-turner. All night long. And, one hundred percent natural. That’s how you do it! @abelfragrance @francesshoemack

By Killian Smoking Hot (Mathieu Nardin): The most recent addition to By Kilian’s “Smokes Collection” is a sophisticated modern spin on that smoky boozy night out that you can’t remember. A luxurious candy apple coated with cinnamon kicks open the door with an audacious murmur of Bourbon Vanilla trailing it which further contributes to the untamed wildness of a tobacco haze. Somewhere the siren song of a hookah pipe is calling you. @killianparis @mat_nd

Parfums Quartana Forest of the Golden Dream (Celine Barel): Modern Fougere that is bright and clean. A complex uplifting green healing scent with so many notes that it’s hard to find the trees for the pine forest. So, a tree falls in a forest and no one hears it, does it smell? The answer is yes, as Joseph Quartana envisioned it.  @parfums_quartana @celinebarelperfumery

Best 10 perfumes of 2023

Best 10 Fragrances for 2023

My love for fragrance goes way back to my childhood, but was only recently rekindled when I became a clinical aromatherapist in 2003. I am sure there are many whose passion for perfume started from this very point. Here are my10 Best Fragrances of 2023 (alphabetically by perfume name) and two Honorable Mentions:

Best 10 niche fragrances of 2023

The 7 Virtues Cherry Ambition (Julie Pluchet of CPL Aromas): I have followed the work of Barb Stegemann for some time now and she is a remarkable woman. The 7 Virtues mantra, MAKE PERFUME NOT WAR, resonates in 2023 more than ever. If you desire confidence in any aspect of life, try this cheery cherry. It is a rare beauty created with sustainable sandalwood and upcycled cognac. @the7virtues @barbstegemann

For The Scent of It Dreaming in Tonka (Michael Schrammel): From a dream to the manifestation of remarkable quality, this fragrance takes your dreams to a higher realm. It wraps you in a cloak of transparent Lame` (a fabric) with an array of metallic threads and an otherworldly light with a fringe of Bourbon, Vetiver, Amber, Sandalwood, and Tonka Bean, leaving a trail behind you. @forthescentofit

Nicolai Parfumeur Createur Iris Médicis Intense (Patricia de Nicolaï): Madame de Nicolaï has created an authentic and intense Iris perfume with vitality, like a few of the hybridized Iris bulbs I received and planted from a dear friend in Colorado years ago. She crossbred some strictly for fragrance and their beauty. Iris Médicis Intense is lovely, spicy, and floral, with the base notes true to the artistry of Patricia de Nicolaï. I love Iris Médicis, and I get so many compliments (someone chased me down wearing it). @nicolaïparfumeurcréateur

Arquiste L’’Or de Louis (Rodrigo Flores-Roux): A luscious fruity floral full of vibrancy with a sweet-tart twist, followed by eutrophic musky, earthy honeyed wood ignited into a fabulous luxury of smoke containing all the notes, greeting you to a cozy enchanting escape. If you have never experienced full-bloom orange fields, you are missing out; this fragrance, however, can take you there any time or day. @arquiste @rodrigofloresroux

Gallagher Fragrances Purple Powder (Daniel Gallagher): Purple Powder is a complex, multifaceted gem that takes its time revealing its hidden opulence while taking you through an extraordinary journey. I love the ever-present notes of a beautiful heart note patchouli and the sweet, rich, syrupy vanilla in many of Daniels’s fragrances. Purple Powder caresses like an illuminating shield, yielding its power and beauty for all to experience. @gallagherfragrances

La Fleur By Livvy Resilient MB (Olivia Larson): Resilient is a custom-made fragrance for the Molly Brown House Museum. Resilient is a tribute to the many parts of the world Molly and her husband traveled to. Resilient is an impressive tea fragrance dripping with herbaceous & citrus notes with a lovely, sweet, woody dry down. With this gorgeous perfume, you will embark on a unique, surprisingly beautiful world adventure and a sweet ending. @lafleurbylivvy

Meo Fusciuni Sogni (Giuseppe Imprezzabile): Sogni is a unique experience of woods aged by time, the elements, and the encroachment of the lush green vegetation fed by rain, wind, and sun. You taste the roasted green tea and rice before the Kodo (heartbeat, the primal source, or the way of fragrance) note transports you to a magical place of dreams. @meofusciano_parfums

Wit & West The Violetear (Whitney Swales): The Violetear opens with a mystical flittering of bergamot flanked by the other delightful waftings from a stunning garden cared for with loving, grateful hands. It is then mixed with the components of the earth to create a beautiful Fougere that dances on your skin. It is not an overpowering fragrance but has an astonishing, lasting presence. @witandwest

Olivier Durbano White Stone Prophecy 19: I.0 (Olivier Durbano): White Stone Prophecy spoke to my soul deeply and revealed a new blank page of my life. A page that goes beyond a new chapter to become an entirely new book of my life. I write this book with a transparent pen that reveals itself only to me. In it are the pure and authentic parts of myself that have been tumbled over time and experience to smooth out the rough edges and reveal the sacredness of the divine within. @olivierdurbano

Best fragrances of 2023

My Best 10 Fragrances for 2023 Honorable Mentions are equivalent to Best of Scent awards:

For The Scent of It Dreaming in Oud (Michael Schrammel): Dreaming in Oud is a whispering, soft, sweet, spicy Oud that will wisp you gracefully through clouded dreams. @forthescentofit

Meo Fusciuni Viole Nere (Giuseppe Imprezzabile): Viole Nere starts with a crisp, clear, bright, and floral note and then evolves into a sweet powder refined by the earth elements.

  • I haven’t kept up with new perfume releases this year as closely as I have in years past, so many of Hermano and Sandi’s selections are new to me. I’m also fascinated by the shortage of overlap in almost all of the lists this year – although Forest of the Golden Dream, a new release that I am particularly interested in (I want to smell like a forest! Always!) has shown up on several lists. Thank you for the beautiful ways you describe scents. I’d love to win Parfums Quartana Forest of the Golden Dream, and I am in NY, USA.

  • Ouh…I was hooked with “patchouli and vanilla”…that Deep Dark Vanilla sounds amazing beyond all levels! Also notable is the Cheery Cherry…I have yet to try a cherry scent that isn’t reminiscent of cough syrup. My curiosity is peeked!

  • The picks i found most interesting were Myrrh Mystere, Cafe Tabac, and Iris Medicis Intense. I do recognize more that have been awarded by multiple people like Purple Powder, White Stone Prophecy, And Sogni as well as Viole Nere from Meo Fusciuni. If I was to win I would choose Iris Medicis Intense. Thanks for the generous draw, from the U.S.

  • It’s been great getting to know a little bit about each CFB contributor. Like Sandi, aromatherapy has been a gateway to my love of perfume. I’m a massage therapist and the green healing qualities of Forest of the Golden Dreams sounds right up my alley. Thank you from NY, USA.

  • Interesting reading about all the picks. This has been the year of iris for me but there’s a variety in what is making the lists. I’m from Canada and would like to win the Nicolai perfume.

  • Thank you so much, Sandi and Hernando, for sharing your favorites with us. It was a strong year for perfumes and I know it can be challenging to whittle down your favorites to a top 10 list. I was happy to see some of my faves from this year, such as Arabeqsue and Dreaming in Tonka (among others), included in your selections. It’s also exciting to see a few that flew under my radar, like Aedes de Venustas Café Tabac, which sound phenomenal. The two up for grabs in the giveaway both sound incredible and it is very hard to choose one over the other. I suppose I would pick Parfums Quartana Forest of the Golden Dream as I am just starting to explore the world of green forest-like scents and have enjoyed what I have found so far. Best of luck to everyone. I live in NC, USA.

  • Café Tabac and Myrrhe Mystère sound perfectly unisexy and on my wishlist. I liked that Abel’s smoky Black Anise was mentioned once again. Iris Medicis Intense would definitely be my pick, if lucky to win, this draw. Thanks for another wonderful article. Happy New Year! Mich USA

  • Ramses Perez says:

Yes I agree that vanilla has been one of the dominant notes this year in fragrances (as it tends to be on most years). It’s robust base note that prolongs the life of a fragrance so it makes sense many fragrances contain it as well as it being mass appealing. I see some familiar houses in both selections as well as new houses I knew about but never experienced any of their fragrances. Nicolai Parfumeur Createur is one of those houses and this Iris Medicis Intense sure does sound amazing. I’ve come to love iris in fragrances and can only imagine what an intense version of it can be. Cheers from USA!

  • I’ve not tried anything from Nicolaï yet! I’m a huge fan of Iris. And if for Sandi Iris Medicis Intense beat out Viole Nere, I’d love to try this one. Especially after reading Sandi’s note and Lauryn and Michelyn’s reviews. I mean … being chased down to have someone ask about your perfume. 🙂

I’d love to also try, thanks to these great lists/reviews, Tom Ford’s Myrrhe Mystere. I’m in the US

  • Seems like asking Duchaufour if he can bottle a scent is like asking Liszt if he can play piano. lol Very interested to try Cafe Tabac myself. Bit of a surprise that I’ve been seeing Smoking Hot on a few lists lately since I wasn’t too impressed with it, but I do have to agree with Forest of a Golden Dream. Immediately went on my to-buy list for next year. The cherry in Cherry Ambition also very delectable in the opening. A “puffy” rendition on an established accord, but a pleasant one to be sure and one that deserves heedless layering. lol Need to get my nosy on Sogni too. Iris Medicis Intense would be my pick! Wishing everyone @ Cafleurebon a very happy and prosperous new year. From Canada. ♥♥♥

  • Great choices by Hernando and Sandi. Being a hardcore cherry fan The 7 Virtues Cherry Ambition peaked my interest with its cheery cherry, sustainable sandalwood and cognac. I’m imagining a well dressed gentleman enjoying a tropical drink while in the company of distinguished women. Gallagher Fragrances Purple Powder sounds enticing with its layers of syrupy vanilla and beautiful heart note of patchouli. I enjoy how it’s described as an illuminating shield, yielding its power and beauty for all to experience. I’d like to win Iris Medicis Intense. Thank you for the opportunity. New York, USA.

  • Oh my God! I’m such a big fan of Nicolai creations, there’s absolutely no flop in this house’s collection! I’m so excited to see (again) their newest launch here and not only that but it’s subjected to a giveaway too! It’s the only one I haven’t tried but it looks good (I’m a fan of this perfume profile) and it’s definitely not gonna be the one disappointing me since I liked even the ones that I normally don’t go for. I’m in! Thank you so much for the opportunity! From EU

  • Another thought provoking pair of lists from Hernado and Sandi. There are so many that I need to try but, I also completely agree with many of their choices. I also fell in love with Thameen’s Fanfare with its fresh green leaves ans stems that transports you directly to a fresh flower market. I also love the idea of Resilent by La Fleur de Livvy and how it was commissed for a museum, need to find a way to smell this one! I have been wanting to try Patricia Nicolai’s take on Iris so, I would adore a bottle. Thanks for a wonderful read and generous draw. US

  • Another great selection! This is wonderful!
In Hernando’s selection I find lot of perfumes that I LOVE or I really would like to try. Beginning from Forest of the golden Dream by Quartana, a Dream for me; and followed by Arabesque or Black anise by Abel, one of my Favourite tobacco scents.

Sandi makes also a great job choosin 10 incredible Fragrances where I would like to remark Iris médicis by Nicolai Parfumeur, Cherry ambition by The 7 vitues or the Violetear by Wit & west.

I am posting from Spain and would like to win iris medicis

  • I am in the U.S. and would love to win the Quartana Forest of the Golden Dream. There are several perfumes on this particular list that I have either wanted to try (Deep Dark Vanilla), or that I have sampled this year (Viole Nere, Sogni) and I definitely agree with the “best of” moniker! Forest of the Golden Dream is one that I sampled at Fumerie Parfumerie in Portland and oh boy, is it delightful! First minute or so I’m sitting underneath a fir tree, breathing in the terpenes and the damp soil. Then it softens into something light-filled, yet mysterious. I am really enamored with this scent and would definitely go a little crazy spritzing it all over if it I happen to win a bottle.

  • I’d like Quartana Forest of the Golden Dream. I love these top 10 lists as they remind me to check out fragrances I missed during the year. I find it interesting that Iris Medicis Intense, Viole Nere, and Forest of the Golden Dream have been on so many lists. You can’t go wrong with Iris, Violet and a beautiful forest. Thank you for the drawing. NY State USA

  • Shibuichi2000 says:

“You can’t smell anything you want” – aaaah, Hernando, now you’ve said it :).
Browsing all these end of the year’ top 10, these words begin to feel like a realization – the scented world is so vast and fast paced, that there is nobody in the world (I’m sure) that got to smell all the fragrant newborns.
Hernando’s list, from all so far, seems more close to a list I’d probably make, if I’d be lucky enough to – at least- smell anything I need :).
Sandi’s completing it with Iris Médicis Intense which would be a dream come true if I were to win (I’m based in EU), Violetear and White Stone Prophecy.

  • Amazing top 10 lists, but I must admit that I haven’t tried most of these perfumes.
    These sparked my interest:
Parfums de Marly Valaya where citrus and vanilla work beautifully together.
Aedes de Venustas Café Tabac – i love coffee in perfumes!
By Killian Smoking Hot – a luxurious candy apple coated with cinnamon? Yes please!
Wit & West The Violetear – just sounds gorgeous!
    I’d choose Iris Medicis Intense.
    Hugs from EU. ❤️

  • David Furman says:

Man o man, I love oud. Arabesque by Jayne Ormande is right up my alley. I own several niche ouds and pure oil from Dubai but this goes in a unexpected direction from the opening black currant opposing the oud at the far base. Unique, leaving us all desiring more. No experience with this house whatsoever but in my research I’ve never heard a negative review. Wonder why…..Mr Hunts and his lovely alchemy. Can’t wait to try cocoa moon but monkeys blood has our attention.
I want to fall in its allure, please. From Jacksonville, NC

  • The selections presented by Hernando and Sandi encompass a wide array of fragrance types, from opulent florals to deep and mysterious orientals, which I adore!

The combination of powerful citrus and vanilla notes in Parfums de Marly`s Valaya sounds both luxurious and attention-grabbing.

The atypical blend of patchouli and vanilla in Deep Dark Vanilla seems like offers a deep, earthy aroma that leans towards the masculine but seems to be equally adored by women. This description sounds captivating for me as I like perfumes on the edge!

The combination of notes in Smoking Hot like cinnamon, bourbon vanilla, and tobacco creates an aura of something warming and cozy, sounds nice!

Olivier Durbano`s White Stone Prophecy 19: I.0 seems to hold a deeper meaning, symbolizing a new chapter in life with its pure, authentic, and spiritual characteristics. I again admire it in advance even without trying it.

Thank you for such a great overview!

I live in the EU (Germany) and would be happy to win Nicolaï Parfumeur-Createur`s Iris Medicis Intense.

  • This year had quite a few interesting releases, although I only have tried Iris Medicis and loved it.
I am in the us and would like to win a bottle of Iris Medicis.

  • A delightful read by Sandi and Hernando. In this article I was particularly smitten by the brighter, lighter, fruitier selections: Monkey Blood, Cherry Ambition and Smoking Hot, with their uplifting, cheeky cherry / candy apple notes. Mouthwatering!
I am also a lover of floral and powdery scents, which makes me assume that I would love a vivacious iris centric perfume, like Iris Medicis Intense, so generously offered by Mme. Nicolai. Therefore, I would choose that one, were I so lucky to win.
    Commenting from the EU.
    Thank you!

  • I hope to get my nose soon on Maison Francis Kurkdjian Aqua Media Cologne Forte. Everything I tried from this house was excellent! I mean, they have a fragrance for every season, night or day. You want something elegant in the summer? No problem, you have plenty of choices. You need a fragrance for a fall dress up event? Kurkdjian has your back! I already own Grand Soir and I am at half bottle + countless samples of everything from this house that I have emptied throughout the years. My regret is that I could not get a bottle of Absolue Pour Le Soir when was still available. That one was slaying back in the day when I went out with my buddies on the weekend nights… oh, the great memories now that I think of it…

Thank you for the mini-reviews and for the wonderful prizes that are up for winning. I am in EU and my choice is Nicolai’s Iris Medicis Intense. Good luck to everyone!

  • Max Corvinus says:

Out of all the mentioned perfumes I would like to try Deep dark vanilla and Tom Ford’s Myrrhe Mystere since they would be most suitable to my sensibilities.

Iris de Medici by Nikolai sounds like a potent and mysterious creation. Most men’s iris perfumes are by default bright and sweet, but I think I could easily pull this one off. In case it turns out too sunny for me, I know a good handful of people who would certainly find it enjoyable. It would definitely be a thrill ride for me.
    I live in Zagreb, Croatia.

  • Going to look to sample the Deep Dark Vanilla. For the draw I’d pick the Iris Medicis Intense. US

  • lavienrose13 says:

Thanks for this review. I am happy to see Deep Dark Vanilla in this top 10 selection. I also find it intriguing, surprising, addictive and complex. A beautiful discovery in the end of 2023 !
I would love to discover Iris Medicis Intense and I am from France.

  • Each nose is different of perceiving fragrances, and it’s noticeable in Hernando and Sandi list this year is that is not overlap.

I recognize a few from the list, either that I have smelled or seen in others list or forums.

Nicolaï Parfumeur-Createur Iris Medicis Intense caught my attention due to the Iris which is a note I have enjoyed this year, and I would be very happy if I win this fragrance.

From Massachusetts. Happy 2024 to all.

  • I very enjoyed to read the lists of Hernando’s and Sandi’s selections of top 10 perfumes. Unfortunately I have not tried any of them. I would chose Nicolaï Parfumeur-Createur if I will be as lucky to win. Thank you for the chance. I live in Europe.

  • I was surprised to find that I liked Cherry Ambition, I rarely like anything from the mass merchandisers. L’or de Louis is a beautiful orange blossom and those gold flakes are gorgeous! Myrre Mystere has been on my radar for ages, this makes me know I must get my nose on it asap. So many good choices here. I’d love to win Dream of the Golden Forest. USA.

  • These are some attention grabbing choices by Hernando and Sandi. Never experienced D.S. & Durga before and the hause caught my eye with its vanilla and patchouli centered scent Deep Dark Vanilla. Abel Black Anise is also very interesting as I like natural perfumery in general and star anise notes. Patricia de Nicolai is one of my favourite perfumers, so I am very interested in the latest creation of Nicolai Parfumeur Createur. I am posting from EU and would like to win Iris Medicis Intense.

  • And the giveaways keep coming!
You guys are awesome thank you so much for the chances.
I would have to choose the
50 ml bottle of Parfums Quartana Forest of the Golden Dream if selected.
    It sounds amazing!
Hernando list most mirrors my experiences for this year.
Maybe I am doing something right.
    Oklahoma usa

  • Thameen Fanfare Cologne Elixir was a favorite of mine this past Summer, the juicy citrus with the beautiful blend of florals and yes the vermouth… so stunning and a perfect fit for hot summer Minnesota days. It wore well and had the most beautiful but not overwhelming silage.
Overall, wonderful selections Hernando and Sandi! Cheers!

If I was to win I would say Iris Medicis would suit me so well!

    John from USA

  • I always love reading the editor’s picks! So interesting that just today my daughter was asking if there is a healing fragrance out there like walking through a forest…and it sounds like Hernando has answered it in his recommendation of Parfums Quartana Forest of the Golden Dream! Tough to decide between that and the iconic Nicolai’s latest Iris Medicis….they both sound extraordinary. For my daughter I would choose the first. Thank you for this generous draw. I live in NH, USA.

  • I think Hernando’s and Sandi’s selections are very impressive and reflect their love and appreciation for the world of perfumery. They have also shared some personal stories and insights behind each perfume, which make their article more enjoyable and informative. I admire their expertise and passion for the art of fragrance. I’d love to win Iris Medicis Intense. I live in Trzebnica, Poland, EU.

  • Both lists are great, I haven’t smelled all of them, however I love Smoking Hot and Iris Médicis Intense, so I would like to be the lucky one to win this great creation by Patricia de Nicolai and start 2024 with good vibes and smelling wonderful. Thank you very much for the opportunity. Hugs and greetings from Mexico.

  • More insightful top ten lists from the CaFleureBon contributors. I’m astounded at the creativity and innovation of the perfumers selected. I always find it interesting to take a second look at the fragrances picked by multiple people. I’ve had my eye on Parfums Quartana Forest of the Golden Dream since I first read about it on the blog. An uplifting scent is always welcome in a new year. I’m in MD, USA.

  • I would choose Iris Medicis Intense, I’m in Maryland. I love the wonderful variety here, including the new Tom Ford (I’m Catholic myself and this might just be perfect for me, plus I love TF fragrances). I’m also excited to see Gallagher scents and the new For the Scent of It Tonka perfume. I have been very impressed with many of his scents.

  • whimsical diva says:

Very interesting list, and makes me want to order the Gallagher sample set, just to try out purple powder, which I think has showed up on multiple editors’ lists this year. I also wish the Aedes perfumes had a wider distribution so their recently relaunched line can be tested more widely. I’ve also not tried anything from Quartana but it’s a brand that has popped up on many of the best of year lists, so would love to enter the draw to win it. I live in the US

  • Another fascinating read that sent me writing down fragrances I now must sample for myself! This is an expensive hobby but I wouldn’t miss these adventures for the world. I did find more parallel likes/loves here than with some of the previous lists, but it’s always interesting to hear what people love and why. I live in the US and would adore trying Forest of the Golden Drea,m

  • Sorohan Adriana says:

Iris Medicis Intense it is a tribute to Tuscany and Dolce Vita.
A masterpiece, silky of Iris pallida, orange blossom and neroli that adorn the perfume with floral and slightly gastronomic notes accentuated by sandalwood, vanilla and musk!
I like to win Iris Medicis Intense! I am from EU

  • Another great list of fragrances. Glad to see so many previously featured fragrances as the descriptions (and the ones I were fortunate enough to try) were incredible. PdM did an amazing job with Valaya and definitely deserved a spot. Another Meo Fusciuni that I’ll need to check out, and happy to see that For The Scent Of It made it on the list as well. If I were to win I’d love to have Iris Medicis Intense but would be delighted with either.
    From US.

  • Oh, where to start? So many amazing perfumes, I think everyone would like to have them all!

Cherry Ambition I have to try because everything cherry is like a magnet to me.
Black Anise is a must try – I never smelled an anise perfume before.
And Myrrhe Mystere – this one from Tom Ford that went under my radar somehow.

I’d be thrilled to try Nicolaï Parfumeur-Createur Iris Médicis Intense because I adore Patricia de Nicolai.

    EU

  • I already put a note in my phone regarding Tom Ford’s Myrrhe Mystere. It is what I am going to try in the airport’s duty free when I will have my next fligth in 3 weeks. Tom Ford’s private line is such hard to come by where I live unfortunately, that I need to resort to airport testing. Reading your review and looking at the notes, I too feel like Myrrhe Mystere is a very nice blend of myrrh, sandalwood and vanilla – some of the notes I already love – all in one place! Sounds good, indeed!

From Europe, so I go with Iris Medicis Intense if I were to be the lucky winner!
    Thank you!

  • carlos_lager says:

Two great, but very different top ten picks. All the fragrances in Sandi’s picks, that I did have the chance to sample I really liked. Purple Powder is such a well balanced complex scent and Arquiste L’Or de Louis is one of the best clean orange blossoms I have tried in a while. Another excellent pick is Nicolais Iris Medicis. It is pure class. A beautiful clean, slightly woody iris. One of the best releases from Nicolai in my opinion.
Thank you for the chance to win a full bottle.
Happy new year form Austria (EU)

  • Deep Dark Vanilla, Sogni and Cafe Tabac caught my attention most, but a few of other ones too. I love how they relate to the tangible, sensual natural notes, such as tobacco, myrrh or vanilla and how they recreate them with the sense of mystique and quirkiness. This applies to most of the mentioned descriptions. Without having tried any, I am also tempted by herbaceous gardens, tea, incense, myrrh, the concepts behind The White Stone Prophecy, the transcendence and the primeval use of perfume.
Nicolai´s Iris would be a nice addition to my collection.
    I live in the EU.

  • Thank you so much for the list Hernando and Sandy, you both totally rock.
I think something very important about these lists is that we can know many of the gems that were made this year and the list above is just genius. I hope I get my nose on everything here and get to know more about the fragrances launched on 2023.
I would love to win Iris Medicis by Nicolai Parfumeur Createur.
    USA, VA here.

  • Definitely appreciate Hermano and Sandi for taking the time to put in all their impressions on such a vast array of fragrances for their favorites of the year. I imagine the process of smelling and going over all the scents you encounter over an entire year is quite effortful.
Standouts that I would want to try based on their writing would be Smoking hot by Kilian, Iris Medicis Intense from Nicolai Parfumeur Createur, La Fleur By Livvy Resilient MB and Meo Fusciuni Sogni (since I am always looking out for tea scents).
Would love the chance to win the Iris Medicis Intense from Nicolai, that would be so cool!
Thank you for the giveaway, from Canada!

  • I love to see Abel Black Anise on so many lists! It’s such an interesting and unique perfume, one that I’d honestly thought I’d hate based on the notes but I really enjoy it. Similarly, I can’t normally get with orange blossom but Arquiste L’Or de Louis somehow charmed me – maybe the honeyed wood aspect did it? Anyway, I always want to smell like a forest so if I’m lucky enough to win I would definitely pick Parfums Quartana Forest of the Golden Dream. I’m in MN, USA.

  • Sandi’s tastes don’t seem to mirror mine, which is great as it’s a big world out there. I noticed a bit of overlap of Hernando’s list with some of the previous best ofs, but I liked his addition of the Aedes, which I missed. I’m in the US and would go for the Quartana as you can never have enough fougeres.

  • Thank you for the introduction to a new brand the Scen tod It. Would.love to try Dreaming in Tonka. I would love the trend in tobacco scents to grow and of course agree with ta trend in Vanialla. I am a big fan of Nicolai parfums and am glad to see one of their offerings here. Would love to try their Iris Medicis if I won. I live in the US

  • As a fan of fougere fragrances, your description of Parfums Quartana Forest of the Golden Dream was very intriguing. The fact that a single note doesn’t seem to be overly prominent makes me think it could be really well blended and enjoyable. To that end, I’d love to win Parfums Quartana Forest of the Golden Dream. I live in CT, US.

  • The two adepts Hernando Courtright and Sandi Lundberg are found of the fragrances they found in 2023 , Hernando more of custom and Sandi of throwback fragrances.Out of all the best of choices they made i have smelled By Kilian Smoking Hot, Parfums de Marly Valaya and Nicolai Parfumeur Createur Iris Medicis.
I’m curious about, on Hernando Courtright side
D.S.& Durga Deep Dark Vanilla due to rich and deep patchouli , and no sweetness type of vanilla report
Aedes de Venustas Café Tabac due to a bar inspiration, and traveling to Dominican Republic with Bertrand Duchaufour report
    On Sandi Lundberg side
Nicolai Parfumeur Createur Iris Medicis due to hybridized iris report . The fragrance i have smelled. It surprised me , I was expecting sweet iris, with violet, leather and some spices but instead I smell mostly soft expensive leather from the first spray, spices and way less iris than expected. It is a beautiful fragrance just way more leathery than I thought it would be.
The full of vitality Iris Medicis I’d enjoy the most
    Much obliged

  • I have been curious about 7 virtues, now I have a recommendation, thank you, Sandi! Such wonderful scents on each list, I will bookmark this page for when I want to sample something summery, forest-y, calming or just different. Thermo you for all the lovely reviews. Both giveaways sounds wonderful, but I would love to Donaghy try a Parfums de Nicolai, especially an iris, so Iris Medicis Intense is the one I would love to win. I’m in the us. Thank you

  • I didn’t try anything from these particular lists, so that’s unfortunate for me, but some of them sound very good. It’s also nice that the list has variety and then plenty to put on the to try list.
I see Viole Nere mentioned, that’s one that pops up in many lists…must be very good.
Very interested in Iris Medicis Intense as I love the iris note and the house of Nicolai is high quality.
    Thanks, I’m in the EU.

  • Amanda32828 says:

Another awesome list and very wonderful to read. Thank you for the opportunity to participate in this giveaway. Initially, I wasn’t going to participate since I already participated in the other giveaways, and I thought about giving the opportunity to others, but with a name like Forest of the Golden Dream, I have to try my chances.
I have to say that the name of this perfume is nothing but mystical and alluring. I would love the opportunity to enjoy it. Thank you for the opportunity to participate in yet another awesome giveaway. Commenting from Orlando, Fl USA.

  • PetaloDiCera says:

These 2023 selections are a great way to sum up an intense year and discover something special you eventually missed.
So thank you Hernando and Sandi for this fascinating list with some gem I love (Sogni and Cafè Tabac) and some more I’m intrigued by!
I would love to receive Iris Medicis by Nicolai and make this fragrance one of the best of my 2024.
    Smiles from Italy, EU.

  • How can the year be over without me trying Valaya? Your review reminded me that this sounds like something I need in my life. There is a lot of divergence in choices this year which is interesting and cool. I’d love to try Iris Medicis Intense. USA

  • Happy New Year!
I feel a ray of hope, reading about the ‘rise in currency ‘ of the clean scents, since I like to consider myself a fan of those.
Also, the trend of bespoke scents sounds both fun and creative, at least to me.
Now, coming back to Hernando’ s and Sandi’s picks, oh boy, how many of them sound dreamy.
Valaya must be impressive, to go straight to the top 10 of Hernando. And the cheery cherry from Cherry Ambition really made me wonder about upcycling cognac into perfume, and what a genius and also responsible idea.
As for me, I’d like to win Iris Médicis Intense, since I’m such a sucker for everything iris
Thank you for the time and expertise you guys put in your selections.
    I’m in EU.

  • I agree with Hernando Courtright about tobacco, a lot of great tobacco fragrances came out lately.
D.S & Durga Deep Dark Vanilla not a sweet vanilla and patchouli fragrance
Parfums de Marly Valaya modern musk , orange blossom and subtitle fruity vanilla sweetness, easy to wear clean fragrance
Aedes de Venustas Café Tabac multilayered tobacco and coffee fragrance
Ormonde Jayne Arabesque i’ll try , the bottle is awesome, but I wonder what I’ll get from it, quality joyous and spicy rose and oud fragrance , with remnants of a spice market in a Middle Eastern country
Thameen Fanfare Cologne Elixir is elegant citrus aromatic
Nicolai Parfumeur Createur Iris Medicis I’ve smelled .Cruising in the classic Italian Alfa Romeo in the streets of Florence , jamming Michael Jackson “Beat It” with decent amount of Iris Medicis on skin , and going to local coffee shop , the fragrance is so fulfilling, and joyful . Premium iris , leather, neroli and vanilla, I live for such moments , and fragrances.
I’d prefer Nicolai Parfumeur Createur Iris Medicis
    Exciting giveaway, USA
    Regards

  • Bravo to Hernando and Sandi! Your fragrance picks have spirited me away, and this week’s standouts unquestionably stole the show. The 7 Virtues’ Cherry Ambition? Picture ripe cherries, cognac, and earthy sandalwood – a sophisticated summer soirée captured in a bottle! And Gallagher Fragrances Purple Powder? Imagine syrupy vanilla enrobed in an “illuminating shield” of patchouli – pure intrigue! However, Iris Medicis Intense stands as a magnificent beauty, holding a special place in my heart. Patricia de Nicolaï’s masterpiece evokes vibrant irises encapsulated in an essence bottle. Every spicy, floral note is a testament to her olfactory artistry. Winning it would truly be a dream come true! Thank you for this fragrant adventure, Hernando and Sandi! Good luck to everybody 🙂
Warm greetings from Abu Dhabi, the UAE

These end-of-year best lists are such a fantastic way to be reminded of all the great fragrances that were released in 2023. The reviewers on ÇaFleureBon always describe the fragrances with such beautiful language, emphasizing the artistry and creativity of the perfumers.
From Hernando’s list, I am very interested in Café Tabac. From Sandi’s, I am interested in the Violetear.
If I were to win the draw, I would select Forest of the Golden Dream.
    I live in the USA.

  • 2023 has ended , I enjoyed learning about Hernando Courtright and Sandi Lundberg 23′ best and I’ll try to express my opinion on the topic.
About brands resonating with younger demographics..maybe some , but others are looking for more mature , or at least experienced with more complex fragrances public.
    ■ D.S.& Durga Deep Dark Vanilla i don’t think I’ve seen the brand in EU , no sweetness vanilla and modern patchouli
    ■ Parfums de Marly Valaya bergamot, white peaches and vanilla.
    ■ Aedes de Venustas Café Tabac a bar , cigar factory and a famous perfumer
■Ormonde Jayne Arabesque quality rose with blackcurrant and moss
    ■ Thameen Fanfare Cologne Elixir vermouth, flowers market and dark clouds
    ■ Abel Odor Black Anise cold medicinal dryness with bitter cocoa
    ■ By Killian Smoking Hot booze , untamed wildness and tobacco haze

    Sandi Lundberg
Nicolai Parfumeur Createur Iris Medicis Intense is my choice
Thanks to Hernando Courtright, Sandi Lundberg and for the giveaway

  • A great list of perfumes to review and hopefully find something new to experience. A cherry cognac scent sounds so interesting so I’m happy to learn about Cherry Ambition, as well as the 7 Virtues perfume house. Of course, DS & Durga Deep Dark Vanilla is a great choice here. Iris Medicis Intense would be my choice. I’m a reader in Florida, US.

  • Hernando noted that custom fragrances are gaining in popularity. That’s an interesting concept, but I’ll admit I trust the experts more than my own nose. His list reminded me to seek out DS&D Deep Dark Vanilla, the cigar factory distilled in Aedes de Venustas Café Tabac, and (another nomination for) Abel Black Anise. I’m also a fan of Beach Geeza; most of Ryan Hunt’s lineup works for me, though I haven’t had a chance to try Monkey Blood yet. Dreaming in Tonka is the only release on Sandi’s list I’ve tried—a very easy to wear fragrance—and its Dreaming in Oud counterpart is easygoing as well. I’m intrigued by both Meo Fusciuni Sogni (roasted green tea and rice sounds like it really puts you in it) and White Stone Prophecy 19: I.0, which must be lovely to merit such a rave review. Great lists!

I’m in the USA. I’d love to win the Parfums Quartana Forest of the Golden Dream. Thanks!

  • Happy New Year Cafleurebon x2
Big time yes to bespoke and tobacco fragrances , I’ll gladly wear myself
Parfums de Marly Valaya if if was stronger, it lasts no more than an hour on me.
Tom Ford Myrrhe Mystre smoky dark amber
Aedes de Venustas Cafe Tabac since my family is into tobacco harvesting business I’m naturally interested in tobacco factory fragrance
Nicolai Parfumeur Createur Iris Medicis high concentration of resins, hybridized iris. I don’t expect anyone to chase me down, I just appreciate the elegance of the fragrance
    Iris Medicis is my choice
    Thanks a bunch

THanks for the nice writeup. It’s so cool to see Meo Fuscini Viole Nere, Michael Schremmel Dreaming In Oud and Gallagher Fragrance Purple Powder have made the lists.

I would love to win a bottle of Parfums Quartana, Forest of the Golden Dream. The description gives me a an image similar to the living forests in Avatar.

    Cheers from WI, USA

  • Let the Top 10 of 2023 games … continue
Round 7 : Hernando Patrick Courtright (NYC) vs Sandi Lundberg (Southwest USA)
Again variety is a factor in both contributors picks
Out of Hernando Patrick Courtright Top 10 i like
D.S&Durga Deep Dark Vanilla- no sweetness, more darkness type of vanilla
MFK Aqua Media Cologne Forte Eau de Parfum-more smooth ,fresh and green than Aqua
Aedes de Venustas Cafe Tabac-timing is everything, adventurous cigar like fragrance
By Killian Smoking Hot – End of the year party with booze , candy apples and tobacco
Out of Sandi Lundberg Top 10 I like

    Thank you, and fingers crossed

  • Amazing lists from you both! I’m amazed to continually learn about perfumes from this year that I had simply not heard about at all. Cafe Tabac sounds like a treat.
If selected I’d love to win Quartana Forest of the Golden Dream. I live in the US. ☺️

  • It’s great to see Tom Ford and smaller brands too which I don’t know much
My choice is iris de Medici by Nicolai
I love Iris and Nicolai, I have New York Intense

  • I read this article with big pleasure!
Love feminity of Valaya PdM- beautiful perfume! But if be true not impressed by Aqua Media Cologne – very simple for that price- yes..nice one , but …
Iris Medicis sounds very beautiful and I would like to win it
    Armenia

  • I’m not really familiar with any of the presented fragrances on this review, i also didn’t keep up with new perfume releases this year as i have tried to control my urge to buy every single fragrance !
As of the giveaway i’m entering for Iris Medicis since i live in EU (France)

Thank you and happy new year

  • I see a lot of interesting picks, Meo Fuscini Sogni stands out as one that I really want to try for the roasted green tea note and layered woods and vegetation. But also, when Quartana Forest of the Golden Dream was featured earlier this year with its own standalone blog post and review I added it to my wishlist immediately, I’d be so excited to win it. But to be honest, Sandi’s experience getting chased down wearing Iris Medicis piques my interest too so either prize would be a true treat. I’m in the USA. Thank you for capping off 2023 with this draw!

  • I’m always looking for the perfect iris, so I’m intrigued by Iris Medici Intense. I’d love to win it. How does it compare to Iris Doux, I wonder…

    From the EU

  • I really Want to win Iris Medicis Intense as ive been reading about Nicolai Perfumes so much. Im from eu

  • What a beautiful selection!!
All perfumes sound amazing, especially liked Café Tabac – interesting story behind the perfumes and I love tobacco note in perfumes.
And Fanfare sounds beautiful – “take me to Flower market” and citruses ..!
I would like to win Iris Medicis.

The two fragrances that seem most appealing from both of your lists is DS and Durga Dirty Vanilla. While at Neiman Marcus, I was able to smell on the test strip. Original and oh so good 🙂
The other fragrance to capture my attention is Nicolai Medicis Intense. Sandi’s description of this being an “authentic and intense..” Iris fragrance, has my undivided attention as an iris lover 🙂
Should I be chosen for the giveaway, my choice is definitely Medicis.
    USA

  • For the Best of 2023 fragrances Hernando Courtright observations are based on brands resonating with younger demographics, tobacco and vanilla fragrances, for Sandi Lundberg on unconventional fragrances
Out of all the picks , including honorable mentions I’m interested in
D.S.& Durga Deep Dark Vanilla because it’s not a sweet vanilla, patchouli is not hippie like, and it’s extremely deep
Tom Ford Myrrhe because of the alluring warmth of the myrrhe
Aedes de Venustas Café Tabac because I love the homage to tobacco Ormonde Jayne Amberesque because of how harmonious rose and oud are
Thameen Fanfare Cologne Elixir because ot the juicy and .classy vermouth
By Killian Smoking Hot because of cinnamon, cigars and boozy party aspects
Parfums Quartana Forest of the Golden Dream because of the line forest
Nicolai Parfumeur Createur Iris Medicis Intense because of the hybridized spicy iris
Arquiste L’’Or de Louis because of the cozy enchanting escape
My preference would be Nicolai Parfumeur Createur Iris Medicis Intense
Thank you for your 2023 observations, and the generosity

I haven’t tried any new fragrance releases from 2023 yet. Out of all of them from 2023, Parfums Quartana Forest of the Golden Dream is the one I’m most intrigued to try. If I win the draw, then I choose Forest of the Golden Dream. I’m interested in trying all of the ones Hernando had mentioned, and he furthered my interest in trying Beach Geeza “Monkey’s Blood”. I appreciated Sandi’s list too. She furthered my interest in trying Arquiste L’Or de Louis. I live in the U.S.A.

  • Hernando Courtright do have a point about tobacco fragrances, there are a lot of high quality 23′ tobacco fragrances I still need to try. The skin temperature unfolding thing sounds quite futuristic to me.
Tom Ford Myrrhe Mystere (Rodrigo Flores-Roux) smooth resinous fragrance
Aedes de Venustas Café Tabac (Bertrand Duchaufour) sensual tobacco
Ormonde Jayne Amberesque If done well I’ll never get tired of rose and oud fragrances , Arabesque sounds stylish and exclusive.
Thameen Fanfare Cologne Elixir juicy floral
By Kilian Smoking Hot Christmas (Mathieu Nardin) Kilian do know how to make a good boozy fragrances
    Hernando Courtright
    XX
Nicolaï Parfumeur-Createur Iris Médicis Intense (Patricia de Nicolai):
Iris Medicis I think is elegant iris , with some sweetness and Italian charm.
    Sandi Lundberg
Speaking of wearability since I no longer live in US, here in Germany I don’t have access to Gallagher Fragrances, For the Scent of It and Beach Geeza
Nicolaï Parfumeur-Createur Iris Médicis Intense is my choice
    Thanks to all involved

  • I was not aware of bespoke and custom making fragrance trends , but tobacco was a thing in 23′ for sure.
Reading Hernando Patrick Courtright and Sandi Lundberg mini reviews makes me want to smell most, and 7 asap
D.S& Durga Deep Dark Vanilla no hippie patchouli, and deep vanilla with no sweetness
Tom Ford Myrrhe Mystere dry smoky amber
Aedes de Venustas Café Tabac sensual tobacco and a trip to Dominican Republic
By Kilian Smoking Hot Christmas cinnamon sticks, bourbon vanilla and tobacco haze
Parfums Quartana Forest of the Golden Dream pine forest modern fougere
Nicolai Parfumeur-Createur Iris Médicis Intense gilded iris ,warm and sweet and slightly powdery violet.
Ryan Hunts of Beach Geeza Monkey Blood .. small American brand
Nikolai Parfemeur Createur Iris Medicis would be great
    Thank you kindly, from EU

Thank you, Sandi & Hernando, for this read ! — I’m especially eager to sample, from your descriptions, Abel Black Anise & more fragrances from Meo Fusciuni in the coming year. Sandi, some of your images are so resonant for me — I love the crystal of Gallagher’s Purple Powder. That is fragrance I love very much as well.

I would love to pick Parfums Quartana Forest of the Golden Dream if I win — I like fougères very much & would a new green scent for the winter. Thank you for the draw — from Massachussetts.

  • There’s so much variety in terms of both scent styles and houses on these lists! Sandi has highlighted some lovely sounding fruity, floral, and woody scents on her list that sound especially good to me. L’Or de Louis, Sogni, and Iris Medicis Intense (my pick for the giveaway) stand out to me as ones I’d like to sample.
    I’m in the US.

  • Michael Prince says:

I loved Hernando and Sandy’s top 10 perfumes of 2023. I love how subjective perfumery is and how everyone’s list is so different. I love Gallagher Fragrances Purple Powder, a truly unique take on Iris that I really love. 7 Virtues Cherry Ambition has been getting a lot of hype in the fragrance community as being the ultimate cherry fragrance. Abel Black Anise sounds great too, I love the notes of Anise and Licorice. If I win I will choose Parfums Quartana Forest of the Golden Dream. I am from the USA.
