Gallagher Fragrances Purple Powder Review (Daniel Gallagher) 2023 + “Purple Soul” Giveaway

Gallagher Fragrances Purple Powder Review

All the other colors are just colors, but purple seems to have a soul.” — Uniek Swain

When Daniel Gallagher announced his newest creation, Purple Powder, on Instagram, it took me all of 30 seconds to add that purple-powder-promise to my online cart. Already a fan of his work (I think Wicked Good is wicked great, I get misty for Mists of Time and I’ve long beheld Behold Patchouli), all I needed was the note breakdown and the Gallagher signature. According to Mr. Gallagher, who, with his wife, Mindy Ruiz, are the creative force behind the brand, “Containing nearly 50 ingredients, Purple Powder is my most ambitious formula yet. I wanted to create a fragrance with many different layers, a concept which seems to be far removed from the relatively simplistic mainstream singular-enduring-note releases we experience in vast quantities today. Don’t get me wrong — I have several simplistic fragrances in my collection because they are usually quite versatile, but sometimes you want to go on a much longer olfactory journey.”

In my experience, a singular composition with a list of notes that reads like an annual order from The Perfumer’s Apprentice can be a risky endeavor. But in the capable hands (and nose) of Daniel Gallagher, I was confident in this blind buy, my interest piqued by notes of sweet acorn, litsea cubeba (a lemony herb used in Chinese medicine), iris powder (of course!) toasted cinnamon and hay absolute—infused with what I perceive as the Gallagher house DNA: Madagascar vanilla absolute and patchouli (in this case a “patchouli heart” note from IFF-LMR). Moreover, the composition contains five different musks. Gallagher Fragrances Purple Powder is an intriguing counterpoint to earlier compositions like Wicked Good, a gourmand which capitalized on three key ingredients (milk chocolate, tonka bean absolute, and genuine Madagascar vanilla absolute). Wicked Good is, incidentally, one of my most complimented fragrances and my gateway to the brand. It was also featured on ÇaFleureBon as one of the ten best chocolate perfumes.

Gallagher Fragrances Purple Powder opens with immediate depth; the citric top-notes of yellow mandarin, Calabrian lemon, bergamot and bitter orange play treble to the underscoring of harmonic warmth from the mid, already in tune. One can sense the aforementioned Gallagher-ness immediately, but before the “purple powder” reveals itself, there’s an autumnal aura in the earthy elements of pepper, cedar, hay, cinnamon, vetiver and what must be the “sweet acorn” accord. It’s stunning. It’s also calming and comforting, like being warmed by an outdoor fire amid the chilly autumn air as leaves fall around you in hues of brown, red, yellow, orange and … there it is … purple.

The iris powder note, which emerges in the heart, fulfills the promise of purple powder. In my perception, however, the composition is not iris-centric; the note is a stalwart member of the ensemble. The powder, it should be noted, is nothing like baby powder or talc, but rather an earthy, pulverized iridescence which casts a purple glow on the surrounding accords. The perfume manages to embody the color’s duality—regal yet approachable, calming yet vibrant. It’s also surprisingly cohesive and intentional. I wore Gallagher Fragrances Purple Powder for a week straight (unusual behavior for a fragrance addict), partly to prepare for a learned review, but partly because it’s absolutely addictive and easily one of the best releases of 2023. It’s clear Daniel Gallagher recognizes when to exercise restraint, but also when and how to harmonize seemingly-disparate accords to create something entirely new and fun and beautiful. And that, purple-hued and beyond, is a sign of mastery.

“Featured Notes” per Gallagher Fragrances: Yellow Mandarin, Calabrian Lemon, Litsea Cubeba, Bergamot, Bitter Orange, Black and Pink Pepper, Magnolia, Lily, Iris Powder, Texas Cedar, Sweet Acorn, Amber, Benzoin, Toasted Cinnamon, Patchouli Heart, Hay Absolute, Labdanum, Madagascar Vanilla Absolute, Styrax, Vetiver, and Musk.

I’m an iris lover through and through. When I first saw the bottle I imagined violet, iris, and lavender maybe. Long list of ingredients but the middle and powdered iris is what strikes me. Layers and complexity are welcome and I feel like it separates the goodies from the great. Would love to win the bottle, from Jacksonville, NC

  • I have been dying to try this one, as not only do I love purple (it was my Nonna’s favorite color and forever reminds me of her)…I am also a fiend for iris scents, especially those that skew more earthy and autumnal. I especially enjoy the description of the fragrance (and purple) as embodying the duality of calming yet vibrant – the perfect dichotomy! I am in the US, in IL.

  • I’m a fan of the Gallagher house. I lament not getting a bottle of O’Fraiche before it was discontinued, and I love Mists of Time. Their compositions are creative and unique, and I can’t wait to smell Purple Powder. I adore a classic amber amber accord, and I see all the components of it are listed proudly: benzoin, styrax, labdanum, vanilla, patchouli, and a milieu of other attractive ingredients with which they’ll skillfully compile a composition.

    I live in Texas, USA.

  • Oh this is exciting – I do enjoy an iris fragrance. The note that I am most intrigued by however, has to be that toasted cinnamon note. I don’t think I have ever smelled that before in a fragrance and now I am super curious to sniff that and experience the blend of iris with cinnamon and cedar and benzoin. Wow!
Fingers crossed and thank you so much for the draw.

  • What intrigued me about Purple Powder is the mention of a “sweet acorn” accord which is one aspect that brings forth that autumnal aura. The perfume manages to embody the color’s duality, regal yet approachable, calming yet vibrant. Thank you for the opportunity. New York, USA.

  • Purple is my favorite. I don’t mean the color, just purple. It’s a color and a way of life! I’m in recovery from active addiction and as I’ve been able to rebuild my life over the past few years I’ve been able to design my life and my environment the way I like it for the first time. And that includes Purple. For me it’s an expression of my freedom and my love for myself and those around me. I now work in the recovery field and the patients I see every day know me for two things: the guy that smells amazing and the guy with the purple long sleeve button up dress shirts. I feel proud of myself again because of that. Purple and fragrance to me are inextricably tied together with a renewed sense of purpose and life.

And the style of scent that this seems to have falls under the category of some of my favorites. I love vanilla fragrances, I love Iris fragrances, I love those fall and winter warm scents that make me feel wrapped up. Commodity Gold, Issey Miyake’s Polaris and Noir Ambre, Parfums D’Marly’s Oajan; absolute stunning favorites and it sounds like this may be my new obsession. I would love to win a bottle of it. But I know that may not be in the cards, I just hope that it’s not so far out of my purchasing power to make it infeasible to try.
I live in Indianapolis Indiana US. Thank you so much for putting this on my radar.

  • I was intrigued by the nearly 50 ingredients and the “fragrance of many different layers”. US

  • What an interesting composition this appears to be. When I first read the name, I wondered what exactly they would be going for – lavender? maybe even some weird take on grape? As obvious as it may seem to some, iris did not immediately enter my mind but I am certainly happy to learn that is the case, even more so that it isn’t your textbook powdery iris. I like the idea of taking an earthy-toned iris and combining it with autumn staples like hay and cinnamon. Michael said it is a very cozy and addicting scent, which is perfect for this time of year. I would love to get my nose on this one. I’m new to the Gallagher brand and it sounds like it would be a solid introduction to their work. Best of luck to all. I live in NC, USA.

  • Being a fire girl with deep connections to the earth, my interest was peaked by an earthy, pulverized irradiance and a fragrance that opens with immediate depth. I also appreciate endeavors of zeal poured from the souls of artists, of which Daniel certainly is.
I reside in the SW USA.

  • Ramses Perez says:

A perfume that yields a hue of purple based on having an iris note at its heart it’s truly what niche perfumery is all about. Having an idea and then concocting a fragrance that centers around it it’s what keeps me coming back/buying new niche fragrances. This one has many notes so I’m very curious to know what the final product smells like. Cheers from NJ, USA.

  • I haven’t tried anything from this house yet, I’ve heard Mist of Time is a really good one. This one had me at iris, one of my favorite notes along with Amber. This one has a book of notes which I feel would make this stand out.

    Indiana USA

  • I will never not appreciate a fragrance that executes the note of iris in a unique and interesting way, although, some fragrances focuses too hard on the pursuit of the perfect representation of iris, forgetting that a perfume is an ensemble (to steal Michael’s way of framing it) of notes, thus I am glad to hear that Gallagher Fragrances didn’t forget to make the fragrance multifaceted and nuanced.

I have an address in the contiguous U.S.

  • Sounds beautiful! Love iris and with pink pepper, vetiver, cedar , patchouli and vanilla will be very complex and beautiful.
Would love to win this bottle.

  • Gallagher Fragrances always seems to have such a unique take on scent. Daniel Gallagher isn’t afraid to try new combinations or unusual accords. I really appreciate his spirit of innovation in todays world of endless flankers. Purple Powder sounds amazing with its explosion of citrus, pepper, bay, spice and the sweet acorn accord. I like the iris tucked in the heart although I’m not familiar with iris powder as a note. The composition seems quite autumnal and I am intrigued. MD, USA.

  • AromaDulce73 says:

The quote from the beginning caught my attention. “All the other colors are just colors, but purple seems to have a soul.” — Uniek Swain . I’m not a fan of powdery fragrances but I’ll be open to test this one since it’s not supposed to be powdery like talc.

    Los Angeles CA USA

  • So many notes. I used to love to take apart acorn nuts just to smell them. Couldn’t eat them of course. I adore Litsea Cuba notes in fragrances and it is not used often enough. It must be great if Michael wore it for a week straight. I never wear anything more than 2 days in a row. Blind buying is a risk for sure, haven’t taken that risk for years. Happy it turned out well for Michael. Thanks for the chance. WA state. Happy Thanksgiving everyone!

  • I prefer Gallagher fragrances on the less gourmand-end of the spectrum, so I’m intrigued to read Purple Powder has a strong progression and seems more woody and floral than much of the brand’s lineup. Michael’s description of the autumnal heart sounds wonderful. Despite the citrus opening, it sounds like Purple Powder is at its core a spice fragrance, but one that combines iris, patchouli, and warm notes in a particularly comforting way.

I’m in the contiguous U.S. Thanks for the giveaway—would love to try this.

  • I love purple powdery notes and the citrus, patchouli, and wood are intriguing to add spice and depth to what is usually a very delicate scent.

i’m from nc in the contiguous U.S.

  • FragranceIsMe says:

Michael, your review has put my olfactive imagination in overdrive. I too am a Gallagher fan. Behold Patchouli, Fineapple, and Tonkazure (from the Pearlescent line) are among some of my favorites from this house. You’ve piqued my attention with this latest creation with the listed notes but more so with the powderiness being an earthy type of powder. I also think I might like the smell of purple 🙂

  • I don’t exactly believe in the Color Therapy , but i definitely do believe in creative people like Daniel Gallagher, who know what they want in life, and most importantly how to achieve all their goals .
From Gallagher Fragrances I own Amongst Waves , one if the best melon fragrances on the market , tropical and happy.
Purple Powder has some of Amongst Waves markers, even though less sweeter i imagine , and more dressed sharp fragrance.
I like the contrast Michael Devine told us between the sweeter notes , with the iris, pepper, cedar and vetiver making Purple Powder refined and elegant fragrance . Black on black Suit , purple silk tie would be a great addition to the new Gallagher perfume.
Thank you Daniel Gallagher , Mindy Ruiz , Michael Devine

  • Had to giggle at Michael’s quip about the number of notes. lol So true. But then again, so many great scents from the past had a veritable cornucopia of notes didn’t they! The mention of 5 different musks instantly intrigued me; but more importantly, I’m incredibly glad to hear of Daniel’s vision to create a scent with an engaging evolution, outside of the simplistic norm. Keeping an enthusiast guessing nowadays is a heck of a feat; but to simultaneously blend ingredients seamlessly while maintaining a cogent theme is even more impressive. Very interested to experience that sweet accorn accord myself. And an autumnal fragrance with purple in the name? Love that bit of synesthetic witticism. Sounds like a doozie this one! Congrats to Dan on what sounds like a wonderful release, and a very happy Thanksgiving to my USA neighbours. ♥♥♥ From Canada.

The mix of notes in Purple Powder are in good hands with Daniel Gallagher. I am intrigued with how he has blended hay, vetiver, sweet acorn, musks, and iris. Purple is such an arresting color. I’d love to cover myself in Purple Powder this season.
    I live in Massachusetts, USA.

  • Hello from Florida, and thank you to Michael for the review!

This powerfully purple fragrance sounds like a treat — I’m especially intrigued by the sweet acorn note. I’d love to give Purple Powder a try!

  • “litsea cubeba (a lemony herb used in Chinese medicine)”

Not just in Chinese, but in the regional medicine, and also wildly used in Chinese cuisine , and nowadays in a lot of kitchens worldwide , it works great with fish, meat, salads and for desserts too . Being a Pastry Chef in terms of desserts almost all the time I use it with cinnamon, and the fact that Purple Powder possesses both intrigues me.

“In my experience, a singular composition with a list of notes that reads like an annual order from The Perfumer’s Apprentice can be a risky endeavor. But in the capable hands (and nose) of Daniel Gallagher”

Every business owner, especially small business owners should push the boundaries, I do it all the time, and I’m glad Daniel Gallagher is doing the same thing.

“Wicked Good is, incidentally, one of my most complimented fragrances and my gateway to the brand. It was also featured on ÇaFleureBon as one of the ten best chocolate perfumes.”

Gallagher Fragrances do have some great gourmands , Rose All Dae , Wicked Good and Mists of Time are in my collection , I’m waiting for my Pearlescent Parfums samples to arrive.
Michael Devine take on Purple Powder, with his other thoughts on Daniel Gallagher made me think of making Sweet Acorn , Litsea Cubeba tarts and Madagascar Vanilla tarts , and later on eating them with my girlfriend, while on a picnic in the woods.
Appreciate the review , Michael Devine thoughts, and the giveaway campaign

  • I found out about Gallagher Fragrances here, on Cafleurebon, I do like chocolate fragrances, I when I read The Best American Indie Perfume giveaway article from Michelyn, and watched Steven’s video, I had to order a sample , and later on a bottle of Wicked Good. Quite alluring, modern take on chocolate fragrance , smells like very expensive hand made Belgian chocolate, so realistic. Strictly cold weather through , I’m so happy to have it.
I like how Michael Devine said Purple Powder is “intriguing counterpoint” to Wicked Good, more complex, woody , spicy engulfing the wearer with a cozy Autumn aura.
    Thanks for the draw

I’ve been a big fan of Gallagher for a few years. First exploring the house by purchasing a sample set where Wicked Good, Behold Patchouli, and Rosé all Daé stood out the most to me. I’d love to be entered to win this one to see how Gallagher takes on a more powdery scent – I’m a big fan of scents like Luna Rosa Black, Dior Homme Intense, and others and this sounds like a truly unique collection add. If I win, Please ship to Pittsburgh, PA

  • Purple Powder. What a fitting name. This sounds very complex and interesting! I’m just starting to become familiar with iris and the description of the notes makes me want to add this one to the list. A “sweet acorn” accord, yes, this is exciting. I would love to win this one. Thanks for the giveaway! In the USA.

  • I’m always excited to try something new from Gallagher. Wicked Good and Behold Patchouli are my favorites. I would love to smell Purple Powder because the sweet acorn and hay notes sound warm and comforting, and I’m intrigued to see how they combine with an Iris scent.

  • From Gallagher Fragrances I know Amongst Waves, Rose All Dae and Behold Patchouli. Currently I have Rose All Dae, and I had Amongst Waves 4 years ago , it was my go-to in the Summer of 19′.

“…like Wicked Good, a gourmand which capitalized on three key ingredients (milk chocolate, tonka bean absolute, and genuine Madagascar vanilla absolute). Wicked Good is, incidentally, one of my most complimented fragrances and my gateway to the brand….”

I wonder why I haven’t smelled Wicked Good yet , I guess I’ll have to order samples of both Purple Powder and Wicked Good too
Purple Powder i like for its complexity, iris , toasted cinnamon and the harmonic warmth.
My favorite Gallagher Fragrances perfume is Rose All Dae
    Exciting giveaway, USA

  • I like the contrast in Purple Powder between the rare ingredients like sweet acorn, litsea cubeba and toasted cinnamon, iris and the musk.
Michael Devine made me think of laid back family vacation in a secluded area in the woods. Family, nice cabin, hot tub and me drinking The English Christmas Punch , warm and inviting drink that’s perfect serving during colder weather.
Amongst Waves i have ,but I need to explore more of Daniel Gallagher Fragrances.
    Thank you for the opportunity

  • I am a Daniel Gallagher supporter since 2016 when I discovered his work, when I watched Steven and Carlos video on YouTube, reviewing the very first releases … sorry for the off-topic , but RIP Carlos aka Brooklyn Fragrance Lover .
Time flies so incredibly fast, I still keep my empty oval shaped bottles of iLoreN and Bergamust .
Other than his fragrances of course, there’s something about Daniel Gallagher i really like, his approach to customers. From the first order, to the second reworked version of Carpe Cafe , to Baklava he’s always been not only helpful, but always taking his time , making me feel I’m a part of his inner circle, and not some random customer….unlike some other American brands lately.
I’m familiar with all his work except for Purple Powder and TONKAPEACH .
If I have to rate my favorite ones available on the market right now , counting Pearlescent Parfums :
    1. Rosé All Day
    2. Carpe Cafe , the second, reworked version. Again Daniel explained me on Instagram the differences between the two versions
    3. Wicked Good / Baklava
If i can include the discontinued Gallagher Fragrances, my favorite 3 would be:
    1. Rosé All Day
    2. Original Carpe Cafe
    3. Peaches and Campfire , unfortunately I’ll never forget how bottle was stolen from me , the second fragrance ever stolen from me, together with Cafleurebon and 4160Tuesdays collaboration White Queen.
Purple Powder like because uf how genuinely impressed Michael Devine is , the level of sophistication, cozy atmosphere and the iris…that’s not exactly iris aroma.
    All profiles I already follow , @waltherp99bg
    Thanks a lot

Thanks for the wonderful review Michael.

I love iris in all it’s forms – lipsticky, powdery, talc, earthy and sumptuous.

I’m really intrigued by this fragrance because both patchouli and vanilla tend to be very strong and long lasting base notes. This fragrance, with all it’s complexity sounds quite technical and is really a tribute to the world of indie perfumery.

I would love to get my nose on this.

    Cheers from WI, USA
