Michelyn and Ermano Best Fragrances of 2023

Michelyn and Ermano’s Top Ten Perfumes of 2023

In Part 1, Editor Ermano Picco and I began with an overview of the best perfumes of 2023 as well as trends and we agreed more than we disagreed. Ermano lives in Milan, Italy and I live in New York City; that’s over 4030 miles away. On Ermano’s list I have not smelled three, so it comes down to access. In alphabetical order, we give you our top ten perfumes of 2023, (I have a tie so there is eleven and my four honorable mentions). –Michelyn Camen, Editor-in-Chief

Top ten Perfumes of 2023

Ermano’s Top Ten Perfumes of 2023 collage by Olya Bar©

Abel Odor Black Anise (Isaac Sinclair and Frances Shoemack): Isaac Sinclair from Symrise teamed up with creative director Frances Shoemack to render a dark, sultry tobacco accord infused with the intoxicating animal facets of bittersweet cocoa nodding to vanilla, and blackcurrant adding a lip-smacking winey impression. The cold medicinal dryness of star anise in the opening is the coup de théâtre making it totally unexpected. @abelodor @francesshoemack

Aftelier Perfumes Hey Jude (Mandy Aftel): Inspired by Jude the Obscure, one of the most renowned and intensely fragrant roses created by David Austin, Aftelier Perfumes Hey Jude keeps all the promises delivering a velvety, pulpy, and peachy rose tinged with subtle greenery. Perfumer Mandy Aftel sets this Queen of flowers on a honeyed pillow of the most gorgeous animalic base purring in retro powdery leather hues. @aftelierperfume

Agarthi Hidden Shores (Cécile Matton): The calm after the sea-storm breaths into this intensely woody fragrance where perfumer Cécile Matton blows all the peaceful shades of emerald-tinged pine woods, and the flora and fauna sheltering under them. Birds rustling through the bushes full of juicy and piquant berries, enchanted violets and humid mosses wear like a fairylike halo giving new life to coniferous colognes. @agarthi_scentcore @cecilepolge

Alexx & Anton Vaudou (Will Inrig): I never heard before of the Berlin based creative duo coming from fashion Alexx and Anton, but their debut in the perfume game blew my mind. Part of a limited-edition capsule collection of two fragrances, Vaudou is a unique take on vetiver laden in champaca and saffron building the illusion of a contemporary mossy and leathery wood. The Japanese porcelain handmade flacon with the classic parfum stopper you can use to let a few drops on your pulse points also bring back the glamour of wearing perfume.

Anthologie by Lucien Ferrero C’est Rebelle (Lucien Ferrero & Jean-Claude Ellena): The most youthful, carefree and tasty fragrance comes with by the vivifying energy of freshly sliced ginger and crisp citrus fruits: it’s C’est Rebelle composed by Lucien Ferrero who teamed up with his longtime friend and colleague Jean-Claude Ellena, The stunning introduction in the Anthologie line also features a beautiful sustainable and inclusive pack. #jeanclaudeellena @anthologieparfums

Frédéric Malle Heaven Can Wait (Jean-Claude Ellena): After the deceiving launch of Uncut Gem last year, in 2023 Heaven Can Wait came quite unexpected from a house at the crossroad between artistry and mass appeal. Jean-Claude Ellena concocted a stunning carnation laden woody floral in the glorious bloodline started by Coty with his Iris remastered through the contemporary elegance of his personal touch. #jeanclaudeellena @fredericmalle

Jacques Fath L’Iris de Fath Eau de Parfum (Patrice Revillard):I had a few insights in the making of Jacques Fath L’Iris de Fath eau de parfum, and I was sure this would have been great, but the result is really mind-blowing. Creative Director Rania Naim along with Perfumer Patrice Revillard worked about two years to create this more accessible rendition of L’Iris de Fath which unfolds the youthful brilliance of peachy iris, yet preserving the classy and fabulous DNA of the extrait de parfum. @jacquesfathparfums @patrice.rvd

Masque Milano Russian Tea Oud (Julien Rasquinet): Tea got a huge revamp in the last two years. Masque Milano Russian tea is one of the most brilliant creations in Julien Rasquinet portfolio, and its oud twist on it is simply gorgeous, dipping this mystical wood in the syrupy raspberry smokiness of the original making it deeper and darker.  I was the Evaluator @masquemilano @julienrasquinet

Olfactive Studio Sépia Collection Smoky Soul (Marc-Antoine Corticchiato):Part of the Sépia Collection and the first of three fragrances dedicated to tea, Smoky Soul by Marc-Antoine Corticchiato focuses on Lapsang Suchong tea and the smoked bitterness of fermented leaves sublimating velvety osmanthus like never before. Along with patchouli and savory seaweed absolute, it delivers the utter sophistication of a chic umami chypre drydown to die for. @olfactivestudio

Roberto Greco Rauque (Christopher Sheldrake): Roberto Greco Rauque by Christopher Sheldrake delivers a full sensorial experience, immersive, beguiling, and even challenging by hiding the mortal coils of a leathery beast behind waxed shining coromandels, Rauque is a fragrance to die for where heady narcissus and acacia blossoms melt into Russian leather and mystic myrrh fearlessly, perfectly capturing the visual artworks of Mr. Greco, but also exuding the most carnal allure that I smelled in recent years. @christopher.sheldrake

Ermano Picco, Editor

 Top Ten Perfumes of 2023

Michelyn’s Top 10 Best Perfumes of 2023 +1 by Olya Bar©

Abel Black Anise (Isaac Sinclair and Frances Shoemack): Dark, sultry, and slipping on like a second skin, (yours or a lover’s) Black Anise changes something people do not tend to associate with natural perfumes…tenacity. Star Anise translated from the Latin (Illicium Verum) means alluring and this perfume enticed me from first spritz, with a mysterious brew of cacao, blackcurrant and amber tinged tobacco, charred by smoke and shadow. @abelfragrance

Azman Perfumes Risk (Antonio Gardoni): Oud as I have never smelled it. There is no oud on the market that comes close in 2023. RISK is a sexy beast, after all, it uses six… count them six… natural oud oils that brought out facets of oud I never knew existed, especially its seductive floralcy (maybe the Garu Hills oud, but disclosure I am no Oud expert, so reader, and you know who you are don’t call me out on this). I just fell down the oud rabbit hole with Risk; this beast is a beauty and is unmatched. @azman_perfumes

DSH Perfumes Bacchanal (Dawn Spencer Hurwitz): Creating a grape fragrance without it smelling like cheap wine, takes a skilled perfumer. Bacchanal, by award-winning perfumer Dawn Spencer Hurwitz is transportive. Imagine falling asleep on a bed of moss and waking up in a vineyard. You open your eyes and there’s Dionysius. He carries you off and plies you with cognac. I don’t want to wake up! @dshperfumes

Gallagher Fragrances Purple Powder (Daniel Gallagher): Rarely have I been so taken by a perfume that I (abashedly) asked the artisan perfumer for a tester. Like Joseph’s coat of many colors, notes in Purple Powder take on a myriad of hues- brown, red, yellow, orange and of course purple. A sign of a talented perfumer is one that can take all  nearly 50 ingredients and blend them to perfection. @gallagherfragrances

Le Jardin Retrouve Osmanthe Liu Yuan (Maxence Mouette): To date, all Le Jardin Retrouvé fragrances reference gardens throughout the world. Givaudan Perfumer Maxence Mouette has captured osmanthus in full bloom at the Mid-Autumn Festival in the Chinese city of Suzhou during the height of the season. Jardin Retrouvé Osmanthe Liu Yuan (nicknamed O.LY. by the brand), bursts out of the bottle with fresh, juicy yellow mandarin and delicious blackcurrant. The star of the fragrance is the titular osmanthus, as soft as peach fuzz (Pantone© color of 2024). Osmanthe Liu Yuan is a perfume so joyful, that Chang’e, the Chinese goddess of the moon (who lives next to an Osmanthus tree) would come back to earth to seek it out. @lejardinretrouve @maxencemoutte

Matière Premiere Vanilla Powder (Aurelien Guichard): I am a vanilla girl, and thought I have smelled every iteration… until now. Matière Premiere Vanilla Powder is vanilla reimagined and combines artistry and innovation. Aurelien Guichard composed the perfume with 40 percent powdered resins (most resins are liquid) and his signature overdose of a raw material, here, the richest natural Madagascar Vanilla Absolute, (ethically sourced by local farmers) is balanced by dry palo santo oil and coconut powder. BOOM! Explosive and addictive. @matierepremiereparfums @aurelienguichard

Meo Fusciuni Parfums Viole Nere (Giuseppe Imprezzabile): For some perfumistas, violet fragrances have a reputation for being outdated, a nod to another era. Through Meo Fusciuni’s alchemy he has kept a hint of the nostalgia of vintage violet perfumes then shrouded Violet Nere in dark forest mists. There is a sensuality to Viole Nere that is both delicate and alluring, passionate and poignant. I read that violet was one of  Empress Josephine’s favorite flower. I imagine her wearing Viole Nere, her hair unbound. “Viole Nere was thought, created, and arranged, while listening to the album The Angel and the Dark River by My Dying Bride and reading the words of Mariangela Gualtieri during each of these stages” – Giuseppe Imprezzabile” @meofusciano_parfums

Nicolaï Parfumeur-Createur Iris Médicis Intense (Patricia de Nicolai): Iris fragrances can be cool, silvery and devoid of both warmth and sweetness. Madame de Nicolai created an iris/orris perfume that smells gilded. Each ingredient, like a jewel, is placed into a vibrant crown- sweetened orange blossom, neroli, and slightly powdery violet. The warm sandalwood-musk-vanilla base is enhanced by saffron and leather adding sillage and longevity. Fit for a Medici… Catherine or Cosimo. @nicolaïparfumeurcréateur@michaudenicolay @damienvflynn

Olfactive Studio Sépia Collection Smoky Soul (Marc-Antoine Corticchiato):  New to the Sépia Collection Smoky Soul centers around smoky black Lapsang Souchong tea leaves infused with osmanthus absolute. Peppery florals are followed by an exquisite drydown of umami like seaweed and singed patchouli. @olfactivestudio

Olivier Durbano White Stone Prophecy 19:1.0 (Olivier Durbano): Olivier Durbano describes the significance of White Stone Prophecy as representing a white page, a gift from heaven, a new World, a new humanity. His perfumes, all made by hand in Grasse, find harmonies in the natural and spiritual realms. White Stone Prophecy 19.1.0 is perfume as a psalm and a healing balm. My soul is soothed by tendrils of Frankincense and the tenderness of violets. The fragrance, like the perfumer is a revelation. @olivierdurbano

Roberto Greco Rauque (Christopher Sheldrake): When two artists meet, one a renowned photographer and one a master perfumer, they have the opportunity to create a multi-sensorial experience that is truly genius. And that is exactly what Roberto Greco and Christopher Sheldrake achieved… and more. Breaking through the one dimension of photographic images into a dreamscape of leather, violet leaf, loamy mushrooms, and narcissus, I don’t know if I should wear Rauque or place it on a pedestal. I have never been on horseback but that is where this fragrance takes me… an “Inception” moment when the artist’s memories become mine.  @roberto___greco @christopher.sheldrake

Best fragrances of 2023

Honorable Mentions: I wanted to do a top fifteen so please don’t look at my honorable mentions for top ten perfumes of 2023 as not meriting an award. They each do.

Aftelier Perfumes Hey Jude (Mandy Aftel): A rose is a rose is a rose? Not if it’s Hey Jude by Mandy Aftel. Mandy distilled the intensely fragrant Jude the Obscure roses that grow in her garden, which have a naturally peachy fruity scent.  She used her late student Ross Urrere’s aged musk along with civet and real ambergris  which brings a growl to the base. Hey Jude brings to my mind not the Beatles song, but Homer and the quote from the Odyssey ”Soon Dawn was born, her fingers bright with roses.” @aftelierperfume

For The Scent of It Dreaming in Tonka (Michael Schrammel): Dreaming in Tonka was born from a dream Michael had about a race of extra-terrestrial perfumers who came to earth and shared their knowledge of perfumery with humans. Maybe they did and they whispered the formula for Dreaming in Tonka to Michael, which combines the allure of tonka bean with the golden glow of amber, creamy sandalwood edged with bourbon vetiver. @forthescentofit

Francesca Dell’Oro ELSE (Michele Marin): Else was inspired by Arthur Schnitzler novel “Fräulein Else”. Crumpling a classic bouquet in the grip of leathery mousse de saxe,, perfumer Michele Marin succeeded in reinventing the vintage carnation-laden Caron Urn fragrances, lending a contemporary glow of honeyed champaca for a gorgeously erotic trail.@fradelloro  _infragranctiparfumeur

State Of Mind Fanfarone Italiano (Karine Dubreuil-Sereni): For me, this is one of the best gourmand perfumes of 2023 and we need to do a full review; it’s worthy. The newest fragrance from State of Mind debuted at Esxence 2023 and I received a sample by mail. I wanted to drink it, not spritz it. Fanfarone Italiano smells like you dipped a chocolate covered biscotti into the richest dark ristretto coffee.  @stateofmind.fr @karinedubreuilsereni

  • I love this list as it refreshes my memory and reminds me of some I want to put on my try list. Viole Nere is my choice as I love violets! Thank you for a great list. NY State usa

  • These are such varied and great choices.
I loved mychelyn descriptions of DSH Bacchanal the best. Since I own Viole Nere please enter me for smoky soul.
    Merry Christmas

  • This was a great year for me within this hobby. As someone who only dove into niche a few years ago (the one good thing to come out of my pandemic experience), I am still a “noob” to many brands. This year I was able to continue my exploration of perfumery and discovered so many wonderful houses and scents.

One of my favorite discoveries this year was Masque Milano’s Russian Tea – I just can’t get enough of its velvety embrace of smoky tea and leather. When I heard they were releasing an oud variation, I was not sure what to think as oud is overdone by so many. I am thankful to see Ermano place it in his top 10 as I am confident that he would see right through it if it were just a money grab. Now it is firmly at the top of my “must try” list.

I have also spent a great deal of time this year exploring smaller indie houses like Kerosene, Aaron Terence Hughes, Darren Alan Perfumes, and For the Scent of It. The last of which has released some stunning offerings. I tried both of his “Dreaming in…” scents, and while Dreaming in Oud was good, I much preferred Dreaming in Tonka and agree with Michelyn that it is among the most noteworthy releases of the year. It’s so warm and inviting – with a nice kiss of spices that never becomes overbearing or drowns out the tonka at the core. As a hug fan of frankincense, I can’t wait to see what his Dreaming in Incense frag will be like.

I could go on and on about the many great discoveries I have made this year. It has been an amazing year for fragrance and I cannot wait to see what the future holds. If I were to be selected, I think I would go for Meo Fusciuni Viole Nere as I love violet and am keen to see his dark and incense-kissed take on it. It is also a brand I have been intrigued by but have yet to try. Best of luck to everyone. I live in NC, USA.

  • A very solid selection right here! Definitely a lot to add on my to-try list for when the opportunity arises! I am very curious about the house of Matiere Premiere as it has been the talk of the town for some time now and it looks like everyone except me has tried some of their offerings. Please count me in for Vanilla Powder. I love vanilla, but vanilla and coconut powder sound even better!
    Thanks! EU
    Merry Christmas!

  • I enjoyed reading about the latest fragrances and the perfumers behind them. Meo Fusciuni is one of my favorites, and I would love to try Viole Nere. The loamy mushrooms and narcissus in Rauque caught my attention. Paired with myrrh, it has to be special. Thanks for another wonderful review and draw. Mich USA

  • Wow! I love the lists, as always. There are so many that I completely agree with and the rest are immediately going on my “to try” list. This really reminds me just how wonderful the fragrance world is, there are still so many absolutely gorgeous creations being done every year! I am hoping Santa brings me a bottle of at least one of these but, just in case, I would adore a bottle of any of these three scents. I have only smelled Vanilla Powder (such a unique take on vanilla, I rank it up there with Mona’s Vanille!) but I know I would love any Violet scent done by Giuseppe as well as Olfactive Studio’s smoky tea. Thanks for both parts of your thoughts on 2023. Can’t wait for the rest! Happy Holidays from CT!

  • On Emano’s list I have only tried the Frederic Malle scent. Michelyn’s Top Ten Perfumes list is more intriguing to me, though; it seems more dark and sultry with the notes and depths in my opinion. From her list my picks where: Abel Odor Black Anise. tobacco with accord infused with cocoa, vanilla, blackcurrant and anise sounds like a tempting treat. My second pick: Nicolaï Parfumeur-Createur Iris Médicis Intense. I love Iris
but not the typical matronly, lipstick/makeup smelling Iris fragrances. The description of a warm, sweet iris with violet, orange blossom and neroli, that is still luxe, is right up my alley. The Viole Nere would be my pick to try out. USA

  • Wouldn’t you know it? I just put in an order with Gallagher Fragrances this very night and was going to blind buy Purple Powder. Had I seen Michelyn’s list and comments I would have done it! Dang! I did order a sample of it, though!

  • Lovely list? I enjoyed reading what both of you thought. It interesting to see the overlaps and I’m now even more intrigued to sample the tne Roberto Greco. I also really have to sample the new Russian Tea Oud edition, Meo Fusciuni and Abel! I was happy to see Viole Nere as one of the giveaway options. Huge fan of his work and I heard good things about this release even before this top list and now I even more intrigued. I’m from Illinois US.

  • The dark sultry tobacco accord combined with vanilla, cocoa and blackcurrant creating a lip-smacking winey impression sounds amazing in Abel Odor Black Anise. Aurelien Guichard’s use of 40 percent powdered resins and his signature overdose of a raw material(Madagascar vanilla absolute) balanced by dry palo santo oil and coconut powder in Matière Premiere Vanilla Powder sounds mouth watering. Someone new embarking in the fragrance collection avenue might not be fond of DSH Perfumes Bacchanal due to its use of ingredients which create a grape fragrance without it smelling like cheap wine, as opposed to a skilled “nose” who’ve amassed a decent size collection and have sampled a vast array of scent genres. These types of scents don’t come around often from what I’ve encountered and I can truly appreciate the dedication taken to comprise a perfume like this in a world bombarded with the usual “blue” kind of fragrances. I’d like to win Vanilla Powder. Thank you for the opportunity and Merry Christmas. New York, USA.

  • What an incredibly comprehensive and detailed compilation of the perfumes! Thank you, Ermano and Michelyn. The range of scents is intriguing, from the dark sultriness of Abel Odor Black Anise to the vibrant and rosy notes in Aftelier Perfumes Hey Jude. What’s particularly appealing is the array of inspirations behind these scents, ranging from literary works like “Fräulein Else” to the imagery evoked by a rose or the cultural references woven into each fragrance. This blend of art, culture, and creativity culminates in a sensory experience that transcends mere perfume and becomes a storytelling medium.
I am especially captivated by Matière Premiere Vanilla Powder and Agarthi Hidden Shores launch! Also can`t wait to try Iris Médicis Intense, as I am a big iris fan.

I live in the EU (Germany) and I would be very happy to win either Matière Premiere Vanilla Powder or Meo Fusciuni Viole Nere as they both sound divine!

  • What a great selection! I have to try them all, especially the Vanilla Powder from Matière Premiere, I would be happy to win it. I’m from the EU.

  • There are many intriguing new releases this year. For example the natural perfume Black Anise by Abel with its dark, sultry tobacco notes infused with cocoa and blackcurrent. Another interesting one for me is Smoky Soul from the Sepia Collection by Olfactive Studio. It includes Lapsang Souchong tea accords with smoked bitterness of fermented leaves and osmanthus. Thank you, Michelyn and Ermano, for the nice overview of your top choices! For the giveaway I would chose Viole Nere by Meo Fusciuni. I am a big fan of Giuseppe Imprezzabile’s work. I admire his artistic creativity. He is not afraid to take risks and combine unusual notes. And the end results always smell outstanding. So, I guess I will like the latest creation Viole Nere as well. Greetings from EU.

  • 2023 feels like such an amazing year for fragrances and these lists only confirm it. I love reading through your curations and finding new gems to try like Bacchanal (I’m weak for mythology!) or Vanilla Powder, which I would like to enter the draw for. I’m currently based in Spain (EU). Thank you and enjoy the holidays!

  • Great list from both of you. I have to say I’m so happy to see Matière Premiere Fragrance house made the list. Vanilla Powder sounds wonderful heard nothing but good things about this scent. Thank you for this chance USA

  • ianbradleyandrews says:

This was a great list. Good to review such an amazing year. Wish I could have smelled more of bertrands new work. I’d love to win viole nere and live in Indiana.

  • Lovely lists! I’m always happy to see the inclusion of independent, up-and-coming brands and also a healthy share of natural perfumes! I remember Ida’s review of Aftelier Perfumes’ Hey Jude earlier this year and wrote on my list of must-tries, but after seeing it hit both Ermano’s and Michelyn’s lists here has bumped it up to the top of my list!
I’m glad to see Le Jardin Retrouve’s Osmanthe Liu Yuan along with Matière Premiere’s Vanilla Powder in these top tens, too! Vanilla is really hitting the spot for me during these cold winter days and I would love to try the explosive and unique Vanilla Powder!
Happy holidays and best wishes to all from the US!

  • Thank you for sharing this rundown of the year’s best with us! I’m about all things vanilla cozy. Your description ‘the richest natural Madagascar Vanilla Absolute is balanced by dry palo santo oil’ had me fixated on Vanilla Powder. I would love to try this! Thank you for the opportunity and happy holidays from the U.S.

  • I am a vanilla guy myself and after seeing the composition behind Vanilla Powder, it sounds heavenly! I always get astounded at the amount of fragrances that release in a year and 2023 was no different. A few of the houses mentioned here have been in my radar such as Meo Fusciuni, Olfactive Studio and For The Scent Of It. I also love how this list has a little bit of everything that will satisfy each individual and what they look for in fragrances. My choice, should I win, it’s Vanilla Powder by Matiere Premiere. Cheers from NJ, USA.

  • Vanilla Powder is a bomb of a fragrance! I was hooked since I first smelled it. I remember trying a couple of other fragrances after testing Vanilla Powder, but my mind was fixed on this one from Matiere Premiere. I would love to have it in my collection.
    EU

Thanks, good luck to everyone and Merry Christmas!

  • Very curious to learn that Ermano was an evualtor for Russian Tea Oud. I really enjoy Russian Tea Oud myself, but can‘t get myself to buy a 100ml bottle, wish they did 30ml bottles for their oud line. I also highly enjoyed L‘Iris de Fath, a timeless piece of art. Thank you for the opportunity to win a perfume. My best wishes from Paris.

  • WeAreScentient says:

Beautiful choices! I have got my notes out and am making a sniff list Osmanthe Liu Yuan and Risk are top along with Meo’s Violet Nere which I’d love to win.

  • Happy holidays to Çafleurebon team.

From the lost, the way the fragrances are described are very appealing, and wish to try them at some point.

Matière Premiere Vanilla Powder is one I want to try soon. The vanilla mixed with palo santo, it sounds that creates a unique experience.

    From Massachusetts.

  • Everything on the list sounds amazing but what has my nose is Purple Powder by Gallagher. I immediately purchased 2 bottles when it released to add to my Gallagher collection and I wasn’t disappointed! It smells beautiful and most important to me and my young nose is that it’s unique! Have nothing like it in my collection of bottles and samples and of course the compliments don’t hurt. I’d like to have Smoky Soul if selected.
    New Jersey, USA

  • Viole Nere is sounds so great: dry violets, crushed between the fingers, sprinkled with cognac. A hint of smoke. Warm, dark, melancholic and bitter.
I would love to win this fragrance, I’m from Europe.

  • The selections seem to favor cold weather though not having smelled them I really don’t know. If chosen I’d like to have the Vanilla Powder. US

  • Amazing article showcasing many different parfums new to me; many with many intriguing and enchanting names, but off course Vanilla Powder was the one that caught most of my attention with the Madagascar Vanilla Absolute ingredient in it. Just the fact that it has an overdose of this ingredient really makes it very enticing to me. Commenting from Orlando, Florida. USA.

  • Shibuichi2000 says:

This felt like a cold season scent selection – smoky, oud, dark, wine, tea, vanilla – all like a promise of warmth and comfort.
I kept thinking reading about the rose in Hey Jude – such a renowned variety with such a funny name.
I’m imagining both of the iris centered perfumes (created by Fath and Nicolai) are amazing – I’ll probably sample the more accesible one.
I’m in Europe and I’d love to win Viole Nere.

  • What interesting choices ! I enjoyes each dscriprtion.
Recently I began like iris perfumes that is why I especially like and intrigued by Jacques Fath L’Iris de Fath Eau de Parfum description. Dream to test it at least.
I would like to win Smoky Soul !
    USA, DE.

  • I appreciate it so much when we get this nice, smart, inclusive and yet easy to follow selections from Cafleurebon editors. I like the “pills” regarding each fragrance and its description and also to follow the impressions of the two editors regarding maybe the same fragrance, through their own preference and understanding.
I love violets (as outdated as they might be perceived nowadays) so Viole nere would be fantastic to win. Vanilla powder sounds gorgeous also, with its totally revolutionary concept and being heavy on resins. That would be my second choice .
    Commenting from the EU.

  • I was able to try Viole Nere this fall, and truly found it lovely, but definitely didn’t get enough time with it. I’d love a chance to win a bottle!

Many thanks for these great lists! I’ve been really wanting to try Hey Jude ever since you first posted a drawing and review for it earlier this year. I think it may have all the qualities which make it a rose for me 🙂 definitely with that real aged ambergris.

Thanks for the opportunity to win, and Happy Holidays and New Year! — I’m in the US

  • I would pick Smoky soul should I win. I’m in maryland. I was excited to see another Gallagher sent on the list. Right now I’m eyeing behold patchouli. And of course DSH perfumes always seem to sneak somewhere on the list. Many of these are completely new to me. I love learning about new to me houses.

  • I”m reading these backwards by accident. The holidays interupted my online browsing for new things to try, but these lists do provide many many ideas! I will be copying off several of these fragrances to look into. I love reading other people’s thoughts on perfumes and seeing what elements blend for them and what might not. In this case, being top ten lists, it’s all magic, all the time! If I were to be chosen, I would choose teh Viole Nere. I live in the US.

  • I’m really impressed by the diversity and uniqueness of the fragrances on this list. Although I’ve only sampled a fraction of them, the descriptions and note selection are innovative with new scents and combinations. As a long time fan of violets in perfume, I would love a bottle of Meo Fusciuni Viole Nere. I’m in MD, USA.

  • Access is indeed an issue, some brands are really hard to get in US, people living in feel the same way about most of American brands
☆ Masque Milano Russian Tea Oud
Russian Tea to me smells like mixed aroma of Freshly baked Traybake Cake with Raspberries, and cup of Yunnan Black Tea with cinnamon on the side, my favorite Masque Milano fragrance, the deeper and darker Oud flanker I’ll sample soon.
☆ Gallagher Fragrances Purple Powder (Daniel Gallagher):
Gallagher Fragrances do have some great gourmands , Rose All Dae , Wicked Good and Mists of Time are in my collection , Purple Powder 53 ingredients blended to perfection claim by Michelyn is intriguing.

☆ State Of Mind Fanfarone Italiano (Karine Dubreuil-Sereni):

All above are fragrances from Ermano and Michelyn Top 10 of 2023 I’d personally wear.

There are a few here I would like to get my nose on. Abel Odor Black Anise & Meo Fusciuni Parfums Viole Nere are 2 stand outs for me. Quite honestly, I’ll take all of them.

  • Thank you Ermano and Michelyn for your wonderful insights into the years best perfumes! I’m utterly honored to be among these incredible beauties! Thank you Michelyn for loving Bacchanal in your top ten<3

  • Ermano Picco and Michelyn Camen’s exploration of the top perfumes of 2023 offers an insightful and diverse journey through the olfactory landscape. The detailed descriptions of each fragrance showcase their keen appreciation for the artistry and uniqueness of each creation.

Aurelien Guichard’s Matière Premiere Vanilla Powder, as highlighted by Michelyn, stands out as a noteworthy creation. The commentary on Vanilla Powder being a reimagined vanilla, combining artistry and innovation, adds an intriguing layer to the fragrance. The mention of 40 percent powdered resins and the rich Madagascar Vanilla Absolute, ethically sourced from local farmers, emphasizes the commitment to quality and sustainability.

The phrase “Explosive and addictive” used to describe Vanilla Powder encapsulates the impact and allure of this fragrance. The ability of Guichard to blend diverse elements into a harmonious composition is lauded, showcasing his skill as a perfumer. The fragrance’s unexpected combination of palo santo oil, coconut powder, and explosive vanilla notes creates a sensory experience that lingers in the memory. I was able to sample and experience Vanilla powder at AEDES in New York, and the description Aurelien Guichard gives of the fragrance aligns perfectly. I am a college student who took on perfumery as a side passion of mine. One day I hope to become as good as Mr. Guichard, but now all I can do is admire his work and learn from it. I attended the first livestream Mr. Guichard hosted about the creative process of Vanilla Powder right after he launched the fragrance, and I loved hearing his use of materials that I have access to as a perfumer, as well as materials that are only available to prominent figures like him. High quality palo santo oil is very hard to come by in perfumery unless you are at the stage Mr. Guichard is, and being able to smell his use of fixatives, powders, and captive ingredients all in harmony really was something amazing to experience after hearing his description and creative process on the fragrance. His minimalistic approach to taking few ingredients in a fragrance and making them the sole focal points going to work in a perfume is very unique, when you have brands like roja parfums and other renowned ones stuffing their meticulous blends with a myriad of notes.

The reviews reflect a deep appreciation for the craftsmanship and creativity of perfumers, with Aurelien Guichard’s Vanilla Powder earning its distinction for pushing the boundaries of vanilla fragrances and delivering a truly explosive and addictive olfactory experience. I reside in New York, and I would love the opportunity to experience Matière Premiere Vanilla Powder.

  • Your thoughts on Purple Powder are consistent with my own experience. It’s a very unique olfactive expression, one to be savored.

  • I took a break from buying and trying new perfumes this year, was completely absent from this community because I felt like I needed to refresh my view, filter my collection and start new habits. I have no idea what 2023 looks in terms of new perfume launches so reading your year end posts is a great update for me (as well as for discovering older gems), especially since rankings like this one, created by professionals, are some of my favorites! I’m happy to find a Nicolai fragrance in Michelyn’s top since that’s a house which has an entire collection I love, there’s not even one miss! I haven’t tried Createur Iris Médicis Intense yet, but I’ll make sure to do so as soon as possible! Until then, I’d love to win Matière Premiere Vanilla Powder since it sounds really promising and I was going to get a sample anyways! Thank you for the opportunity to win a bottle! Happy Holidays from EU!

  • I think this list is very inclusive and diverse. I see a big trend in oud profiles and I love that! I live in Iowa and oud reminds me of sitting around a campfire in the autumn and that’s one of my favorite things about the Midwest. If I win the contest, I’d love to give Smoky Soul a run!

  • have smelled every iteration… until now. @matierepremiereparfums @aurelienguichard. Great choice by both Michelyn and Ermano if I am lucky to win I would love to win Vanilla powder. Also intrigued by Olfactive studio smoky soul. Thanks a million from the UK

  • A beautiful description by Ermano and Michelyn really fascinated by Vanilla Powder. Vanilla Powder is vanilla reimagined and combines artistry and innovation. @matierepremie. If I am successful I would love to win Vanilla powder. Intrigued to try Roberto Greco and Smoky soul. Thanks a lot from the UK

  • Hello, from all the reviews, it seems that Purple Powder by Gallagher Fragrances is the most delicious. It must be such a wonderful scent. Merry holidays to those who celebrate!

  • Sometimes it’s hard to keep up with what’s new, what’s trendy, what’s worth even a blind purchase, what ingredients have made a comeback, which ones will still be on the creators’ palette next year.
Lists such these (thank you Michelyn and Ermano) narrow the selection, open the desires. Happy to see another Azman perfume on the top ten for 2023. Love anything he creates.

Yes, violet was one of Empress Josephine’s favorite flower. Napoleon picked one from her grave, and kept it with him in a locket till he died. Viole Nere would be my pick, if I’m lucky to a bottle of perfume this year.

    Happy New Year from Portugal

  • Beautiful picks! Maybe not my top choices, but I do agree on some.
From Ermano’s top ten I agree with
Frédéric Malle Heaven Can Wait – I love powdery, musky iris perfumes – and Masque Milano Russian Tea Oud – sensual oriental perfume with Olibanum, Black Tea
    and Michelyn’s

  • Pressed post comment by accident.
… And from Michelyn’s top ten I really love Matière Premiere Vanilla Powder as I am a vanilla girl too + adore powdery notes.
    Hugs from EU

  • I enjoy this time of year when I get to read everyone’s personal “best of” lists, especially perfume. My best perfume of 2023 actually came out in 2022 and I didn’t try as many new ones this year, but it was definitely a year for one of my other sensory indulgences… tea. So of course, I noticed that “Smoky Soul” appeared on the list for both Ermano and Michelyn. I love osmanthus oolong and lapsang is such an enchanting type of smokiness so I want to try. Count me in as someone who would LOVE to win Olfactive Studio Smoky Soul. I’m in the US, thanks for the draw!

  • This is such a great list. I would love to win Viole Nere. Meo Fusciuni is one of my favorite perfumers, and violet is my favorite note! Thank you so much, from Illinois (USA)

  • What a wonderful lineup! I’m happy to see one of my favorite perfumers, Dawn Spencer Hurwitz, mentioned and also intrigued by scents that seem to be popping up on several best of 2023 lists, especially Heaven Can Wait, Hey Jude, and OLY. However, as an avid vanilla-phile, it’s Vanilla Powder that I’m most anxious to try. I for one have been adoring the explosion of vanillas lately, and this one sounds unique and is a must-try for me. Thank you so much for doing this draw! I’m in the U.S.

  • This is such a great list. I would love to win Viole Nere. Meo Fusciuni is one of my favorite houses, and violet is my favorite note! Thank you so much, from Illinois (USA)

  • Wow, love so many of these.
Vanilla Powder is just incredible, I got my nose on this when I was visiting London last month at Harrods, and they said it’s been sold out for the entirety of the holiday season. Also, Heaven Can Wait it such a beautiful powdery iris. Just love!
Thank you so much for these very generous draws!
    John from USA

  • I love lists like these! I have not tried any of the fragrances on either list, although there are a few on each I am hoping to sample. In the coming year, I would also like to smell more tea fragrances, so please enter me in the drawing for Smoky Soul!
    I’m in WV, USA

  • I really enjoyed the variety and range of fragrances on this list, from rose to wood. Similar to Michelyn I’ve haven’t had the opportunity to smell all of these fragrances, but I’ve got to say from the fragrances I’ve been able to experience, Frédéric Malle’s Heaven Can Wait was a solid choice . A lot of familiar previously covered Fragrance Houses which based on their descriptions each sound incredible in their own way. Love the variety and will definitely be trying to smell each one of these. If I were to win I’d love the opportunity to smell Meo Fusciuni‘s Viole Nere, but would be happy with any.
    From USA.

  • Ermano with beard > Ermano without beard , bring it back
    Access is a problem 100%
Masque Milano Russian Tea Oud (Julien Rasquinet):
Russian Tea is a great smoky tea fragrance, I wonder how the oud will make it darker. L’Attesa Oud in the future?
Olfactive Studio Sépia Collection Smoky Soul (Marc-Antoine Corticchiato)
Bitter and smoky tea , interesting
    Ermano Picco
    XX
    Azman Perfumes Risk (Antonio Gardoni):
I think Risk pays homages to all natural oud lovers worldwide, extrait with 25% concentration, 6 natural ouds , smoke , medicinal and animalic touches , spooky fragrance
Gallagher Fragrances Purple Powder (Daniel Gallagher):
I no longer live in US , and Gallagher Fragrances are harder to find in Germany, talanted perfumer and one complex fragrance
Matière Premiere Vanilla Powder (Aurelien Guichard):
I’m glad Vanilla Powder in not a linear fragrance , the whole metamorphosis from highest quality vanilla from Madagascar , to comforting palo santo and woods is what intrigues me the most.
Nicolaï Parfumeur-Createur Iris Médicis Intense (Patricia de Nicolai):
Iris Medicis I think is elegant iris , with some sweetness, leather and Italian charm.
State Of Mind Fanfarone Italiano (Karine Dubreuil-Sereni):
Out of the few State of Mind fragrances I’ve smelled Spontaneous Generosity i like the most. The salesman also told me that Fanfarone Italiano isn’t yet available in Germany, probably in late Spring.
    Michelyn Camen

Matière Premiere Vanilla Powder is my choice

One of the reasons I read your blog is to find the hidden gems that influencers aren’t talking about. Each season, and especially at the year end wrap up your team brings us the best in quality perfumes and unique bang for our coins. I live in the South of the USA.
Lapsang Suchong is my favorite tea and Smoky Soul sounds like the perfect cup in a cloud around me. I would love to have it in my collection.

  • Great lists! The ones that overlap between both writers are definitely interested. I found myself most interested in Heaven Can Wait, L’Iris de Fath, and Iris Medicis Intense as iris is a favorite note and all three sound wonderful. Vanilla Powder also is one I’d like to try for sure, I’ve seen some mixed reviews but I enjoyed the other Matiere Premiere fragrances I’ve tried. Viole Nere sounds intriguing as well. If I was to win i would most like to win Vanilla Powder, Viole Nere would be a second choice. Thanks for the generous draw, from US.

  • I have had the pleasure of exploring so many beautiful niche and indie perfume houses this year that took me to entirely new places in the world of my imagination.
Dreaming in Tonka by For the Scent of It was a full size purchase as soon as I sniffed my wrists after first spray.
What intrigued me most about each selection for the giveaway was how they all sound so completely unlike what you would expect for the names/ingredients/notes for each one. I would be ecstatic to receive a bottle of Vanilla Powder by Matiere Perfumes for its incredible inclusion of powdered resins. I make my own incense blends to sprinkle smoke free on a heater, and I crush loose frankincense and copal down into smaller crystals to release more scent. I absolutely love resins, especially in perfumery, and this particular perfume sounds as if it contains meditative and spiritual qualities! A magic vanilla. From Portland, OR USA.

  • Wow this list reminds me that there have been so many new and interesting releases this year! A lot of these fragrances have unique note pairings, which I really appreciate: tea and seaweed (Smoky Soul), osmanthus and mushrooms (Raque), anise and cacao (Black Anise). I hope 2024 is just as creative! If I’m lucky enough to win, I’d pick the bottle of Viole Nere, as I am really loving violet lately. I’m in MN, USA.

  • I very like the list. I did not try them, but all of them sounds great. My choice would be Viole Nere. Thank you for the chance. I live in Europe.

  • They´re all rather befitting this time of the year and post 2020 vibe ,my impression is that violet and purple tones are on the way in. In spiritual and all over sense – quite exciting era ahead.

I live in the EU. Would love to try Viole Nere

  • I like your perfume list because you place importance on independent and artisanal brands. I particularly like your description of Viole Nere, I love violet (I’m a man) and often I find that violet perfumes are not realistic enough, too old-fashioned, Meo Fusciuni’s perfume really seems to have mastered its flaws. I live in France, EU.

  • Thank you for another curated list of beauties. I thought it was Deja Vu when reading Giuseppe Imprezzabile’s quote but then confirmed I had actually seen it on the review of Viole Nere in September. Viole Nere would therefore be my pick to experience that Violet. I’m in USA

  • This list and the descriptions remind me of several similarities fragrances I tried or purchased this year. I also got more into oakmoss as a note and would love to try Viole Nere. I live in CT, US.

  • Ermano, Rauque and hey Jude both sound swoon worthy After reading Michelin review of Matiere premiere vanilla powder I know that the coconut, resins and vanilla would be awesome.
Also interested in francesca dellor else
    Truly to find a sample
Matiere Premiere is what I am entering for
    I live Usa

  • Access problems are not something that came up in 2023 , or since C. , it’s always been pretty much the same way. We should not forget that brands are offering some fragrances of their catalog only on certain markets based on how people from different regions US , UK, EU and Middle East often have different preferences.

Jacques Fath L’Iris de Fath eau de parfum
My clear favorite JF is Curaçao Bay. I don’t know L’Iris de Fath L’Eau de Parfum – upscale iris playing with both lightness and darkness

    Masque Milano Russian Tea Oud
Mysterious, fruity, – and magically smoky , in Russian Tea the Julien Rasquinet mingles crispy wild berries , with smoky wood, dark black tea , and frankincense. The result is magical, one of a kind tea fragrance , and my favorite Masque Milano. I’ll be honest I hope the addition of Oud won’t destroy the perfect balance in original Russian Tea, I’ll try to find a sample.

Beyonce Naughty Girl comes to mind when I think of Azman Risk

    Gallagher Fragrances Purple Powder
I like the contrast in Purple Powder between the rare ingredients , and the complexity.

    Matière Premiere Vanilla Powder
Encens Suave I’ve smelled , high end gourmand with leather. What I find interesting in Vanilla Powder is the natural vanilla , palo santo, and as a whole the different approach to vanilla , fresher, with ambroxan , coconut and it is more versatile , compared to Encens Suave.

    Meo Fusciuni Viole Nere
I like the relaxing , and spiritual properties of Meo Fusciuni’s fragrances, and personality.

Nicolai Parfumeur Createur Iris Medicis Intense
Iris Medicis is one of her Patricia de Nicolai Scheherazade like stories, with sweet Neroli, iris , leather and lots of Italian mysticism.

    State of Mind Fanfarone Italiano
    I can’t go wrong with such a beauty , I’m a fan of sweet coffee-boozy-festive fragrances.

I’d love to win Matière Premiere Vanilla Powder
Thank you for the time and effort, and the opportunity

I like that there was a bit of overlap between Michelyn and Ermano’s picks. 2023 was a great year for perfume releases so lists of top picks by those in the know come much appreciated. I would especially like to try Viole Nere as I love both iris and violet, plus I am increasingly intrigued by the note of carnation in perfumes. For that reason I also hope the empty tester bottle of Heaven Can Wait in my local department store gets replaced soon so I can give it a proper sniff. Fanfarone Italiano sounds too delish – it goes straight on my to-try list. Loved all the descriptions here. Unfortunately, I haven’t tried any of these fragrances; it’d be great if you could put together a sample set for purchase of the best of year scents. I’d love to try Smoky Soul in particular, as I’ve tried a couple of Parfum d’Empire scents, and have loved his work for Parfums d’Empire. Vanilla Powder also sounds fascinating. I live in California

  • As always, these year end reviews are fantastic! So many exciting new fragrances to read about and hopefully try some day. I loved reading about Meo Fusciuni Viole Nere, as i love the note of violet in fragrances. Would love to win this bottle in the giveaway! I am in the US.

  • I know it’s a dream, but I would like to sample all the fragrances that feature in both Michelyn’s and Ermano’s picks – these must be really really special.
Michelyn’s top 10 sounds like a journey for all the senses – there’s something to ‘eat’, to place on a pedestal, to soothe the soul, to amaze the being.
Ah, those irises that Ermano picked .
Thanks for the review and the draw, from EU.

  • I reeeally Want to try vanilla powder and curious abput Matiere Premiere. I disxovered a lot of niche scents this year and i Def like the ouds and ambers. Would love to win vanilla powder im from eu

  • Nice to find about some of the best perfumes released this year. The only one I have smelled from here is Heaven can Wait, a very good perfume, but it reminded me of Cuir d’Ange, which I like better. My top of the list to smell from here is Masque Milano Russian Tea Oud as I love the original Russian Tea.
Would like to win Viole Nere, it has received a great review here.
Thanks, I am in the EU.

  • Vanilla Powder fascinates me a lot, not the usual vanilla, even though I love all perfumes with this ingredient, I must admit that I’m sorry I haven’t bought an Azman perfume yet.
    Linda EU

  • Vanilla Powder has everything I love in perfumery: coconut, vanilla and musk. Sounds like it was created specially for me.
I really see how this one can be addictive and different, although vanilla has been used over and over in perfumery, yet it has the ability to remain unique.
I am in Europe. Thank you!

  • Fantastic selection by Ermano and Michelyn, they always deliver great reviews and picks.
I love this list since it has everything for every season, all you could need for a year is here. 2023 surely was a great year and the new fragrances that this year brought were fantastic.
I would love to win Smoky Soul by Olfactive Studio but any of them 3 would be totally amazing.
    USA here.

  • Oh, where to start? So many amazing perfumes, I think everyone would like to have them all!

I have tried some of these – Azman Perfumes Risk and Le Jardin Retrouve Osmanthe Liu Yuan, but based on these reviews, I’m interested in trying:
Roberto Greco Rauque “a fragrance to die for where heady narcissus and acacia blossoms melt into Russian leather and mystic myrrh”
Gallagher Fragrances Purple Powder “A sign of a talented perfumer is one that can take all nearly 50 ingredients and blend them to perfection.”
Nicolaï Parfumeur-Createur Iris Médicis Intense simply because I adore Patricia de Nicolai.

I’d be thrilled to try Viole Nere or Vanilla Powder.

  • Wonderful selections, I’m intrigued by the overlaps. I didn’t know Marc-Antoine Corticchiato worked for other brands. I’m really interested in his work. The rave reviews for Raque also have my attention

I enjoyed both lists. Many houses that I am familiar with and a few that are new to me. I was glad to see the artisan house, “For The Scent Of It” in the honorable mentions. The house has put out some wonderful creations in the most recent years.

My number one from Ermano’s list is definately Masque Milano’s Russion Tea Oud. Just when I thought you could not improve on the original…then came along this beautiful fragrance.

Michelyn’s top 10 are all fragrances that I am going to have to try…I have not had my nose on any of these fragrances, yet. However, one of my favorite notes is vanilla. I also enjoy complexity in a creation. With that being said, Matiere Premiere’s Vanilla Powder has captured my attention.

Should I win the giveaway, my first choice is Matiere Premiere Vanilla Powder. My second choice would be Meo Fusciuni Viole Nere.

  • kornel.tajnai says:

One of my biggest discovery of the year is Meo Fusciuni. I saw an advertisement on instagram by a local niche salon but I could not connect to the content immediatel. I had a few visits and after I got amazed by the great service and energies of the staff and product offer, I decided to take a closer sniff into these bottles. I’ve been requested by a friend of mine to tell her more about some specific fragrances by MF and Viole Nere was one of them.

For the first try, I could not sharply detect anything next to violet, it was pretty delicate and inviting. I felt it also dark but could not identify why.
Very powdery impression by the friendship of viola and iris. Two components that are used many times together. This is one layer of the main characters of the fragrance.
There is something dark in the background and it comes from the woody/earthy notes of patchouli and santal(!). This is the second layer of the fragrance.
The third layer is coming by cassis that makes it pretty fruity and puply but a very dark way.

These three characters (violet powder, earthy signs, fruitiness) are well balanced and give a pretty delicate, dark, and unusual character to this juice.

    Very much recommended!!

I would be delighted to win Meo Fusciuni’s Viole Nere and I’m from the EU.

  • Vanilla Powder has already made two lists, so it’s got to be knocking some socks off. I also love vanilla and this unique treatment of resins, (mad about) Madagascar vanilla, dry palo santo oil and coconut powder – what could go wrong if we’re all adults? Thanks for the opportunity; I live in NY.

  • Another year is at its end, I enjoyed learning about Michelyn Camen and Ermano Picco 23′ best and I’ll try to express my opinion on the topic.
    ■ Abel Odor Black Anise cold medicinal dryness with bitter cocoa
    ■ Jacques Fath L’Iris de Fath eau de parfum mind-blowing peachy iris
    ■ Masque Milano Russian Tea Oud new interpretation of a classic
    Ermano Picco
    ■ Gallagher Fragrances Purple Powder how exactly a fragrance smells purple?
    ■ Matière Premiere Vanilla Powder re-imagined and innovative vanilla, rich and natural.
    ■ Meo Fusciuni Viole Nere dark forest and violets
    ■ Nicolai Parfumeur Createur Iris Medicis Intense more modern and sweet iris, with leather
    ■ State of Mind Fanfarone Italiano one of my future purchases if it smells like i want to drink it
    Michelyn Camen
Matière Premiere Vanilla Powder is my choice
Thanks to Ermano Picco and Michelyn Camen , and for the giveaway

  • Wonderful roundup. I love violet and having a violet absolute from Eden Botanicals I have wondered why the darker earthy side of violets aren’t in the forefront of most perfumes? Maybe Viole Nere by Meo Fusciuni asks the same question. I’d love to be entered in your drawing. I live in the US.

  • For the Best of 2023 fragrances Michelyn Camen and Ermano Picco observations are based on Metaverse, Inclusivity and Diversity, Remastering classic ingredients, Global fragrance exhibitions , and newest trends. Out of all the picks , including honorable mentions I’m interested in
Jacques Fath L’Iris de Fath eau de parfum because of the mind blowing iris , and the 2 years development time period
Masque Milano Russian Tea Oud because of oud in addition to dark tea fragrance
Olfactive Studio Sépia Collection Smoky Soul because of fermented element, bitterness and smokiness
Gallagher Fragrances Purple Powder because of my lack of experience with the brand
Matière Premiere Vanilla Powder because of the 40% powdered resins, overdose of raw materials, palo santo and coconuts
Nicolai Parfumeur Createur Iris Medicis Intense because of younger leaning iris
State of Mind Fanfarone Italiano because of one of the best gourmands of 2023 and how I’ll most likely would like to drink it
My preference would be Matière Premiere Vanilla Powder
Thank you for your 2023 observation, and the generosity

  • I live in the US and would love to win Meo Fusciuni’s Viole Nere. I’m so glad to see Meo Fusciuni on the list. This year I took a work trip to Portland and visited Fumerie Parfumerie. I had intended to buy an Ormonde Jayne but then was shown Meo Fusciuni’s Viole Nere and Shukran. Instantly, I was transported on an olfactive journey. In the case of Viole Nere, off to a chilly morning next to a cathedral, a slight touch of violet, incense and a deep purple. I can see why this perfume was chosen as one of this year’s best. Love it!

  • foreverscents says:

I love the end of the year lists from Cafleurebon. This site honors both established perfumers and up-and-coming creators. Both Ermano and Michelyn chose such diverse fragrances for their lists. I am sure it must be a thrill for a perfumer to make it to lists like these. For me, a fan, it is a thrill to take note of some wonderful fragrances to try.
If I were the winner of the draw, I would choose Smoky Soul. The seaweed note sounds intriguing!
    I live in the USA.

  • Amazing selections by Michelyn and Ermano! I would love to try them all, specially Azman Perfumes “Riski”, Matière Premiere “Vanilla Powder” and Roberto Greco “Rauque”.

  • Let the Top 10 of 2023 games … begin
Round 1 : Michelyn Camen (New York) vs Ermano Picco (Milan)
Variety is a factor in both contributors picks. After reading the article I can say i like Michelyn picks more. Out of Ermano Picco Top 10 I like
Abel Odor Black Anise – fruity and bitter vanilla and cocoa
Jacques Fath L’Iris de Fath eau de parfum – youthful peachy iris
Masque Milano Russian Tea Oud – i like good tea and good oud fragrances
Out of Michelyn Camen Top 10 I like
Matière Premiere Vanilla Powder – vanilla reimagined , raw and smelling natural
Nicolaï Parfumeur Createur Iris Medicis Intense – jewel on a crown , woody and creamy
Out of Michelyn Camen honorable mentions i like
State of Mind Fanfarone Italiano – if you really want to drink , and not spritz it … the smell is more than delicious.
My pick is 50ml of Matière Premiere Vanilla Powder
    Thank you, and fingers crossed
    Lisbon Portugal (EU)

  • The only perfume on Ermano and Michelyn’s lists I’ve tried is Hey Jude, which is a very beautiful, lush rose; I imagined the base might be too animalic for me, but it adds subtle dimension to the rose. I love Michelyn’s connection to “rosy-fingered Dawn,” which always makes me think of early morning sun on dew-covered roses.

I’ve been exploring peach and apricot notes in perfumes lately, so I’m noting with interest the descriptions of L’Iris de Fath, Osmanthus Liu Yuan, and Smoky Soul—which would be my choice in the giveaway. The description of velvety osmanthus enveloped by the darker elements of the smoked tea accord sounds gorgeous. (I’m in the US.)

  • White Stone Prophecy sounds meditative and an almost sacred blend. Hidden shores is a beachy dreamscape that I’d love to escape to. I would love to win Vanilla Powder. Thank you for the lovely list. From the UK.

  • Monumental work guys, thank you
-Jacques Fath L’Iris de Fath Eau de Parfum I’d wear on special occasions only , timeless iris fragrance . Going back to the 50s and 60s, with Grey Check Three Piece Suit , and Black Dress Shirt, Black Tie and Black Leather Derby Shoes.
-Masque Milano Russian Tea Oud , Original Russian Tea i had the pleasure of smelling before. The steaming black tea is so strong in a good way, that the fruitiness is almost hidden. How dark is Russian Tea Oud i can only imagine
    – Olfactive Studio Sépia Collection Smoky Soul is savory and smoky tea

-Matière Premiere Vanilla Powder i like because of the different approach to vanilla , and not so sweet, but woody and powdery instead
-Meo Fusciuni Viole Nere charisma is appealing to me. Some light , but mostly darker notes and tones are effectively used by the aromatorio , at the same time I find the fragrance not gloomy , but tranquil .
-Nicolaï Parfumeur Createur Iris Medicis Intense is classy , a bit bold and also suitable for a sharp outfit. I sampled it and I think it’s mostly sandalwood, leather and of course iris, and I like how Patricia de Nicolai was able to make it longer lasting too.
-State of Mind Fanfarone Italiano the balance between the notes i find appealing, it’s not coffee fragrance, there’s also chocolate delicious sophistication too.
Matière Premiere Vanilla Powder would be great
Thank you Michelyn, Ermano, Matière Premiere, Meo Fusciuni , Olfactive Studio

  • There have been so many new releases this year that I haven’t even heard of a number of the fragrances on this list, let alone tried them. I need to get samples of Fanfarone, Hey Jude, L’Iris de Fath, Else, and a few others. Thanks for the wonderful descriptions!
I’m in the US and I would love to win a bottle of Vanilla Powder.

  • Although I love vanilla fragrance, the Smoky Soul would be my pick from these 3 choices.

    Thanks again

  • The vanilla powder sounds interesting and I keep hearing about raque from the bottle design to the scent. Usually vanilla frags are always pleasing but this truly sounds like a pleasure. Would love to win either, from Jacksonville, NC.

  • You had me at “the cold medicinal dryness of star anise in the opening” with Black Anise, plus it’s got endurance. Similarly, “enchanted violets and humid mosses wear like a fairylike halo giving new life to coniferous colognes” grabbed my attention when reading about Hidden Shores; it sounds like a balanced and naturalistic take on evergreen perfumes. Ermano’s comments on Russian Tea Oud make me think of Liz Zorn’s rich Oudh Lacquer, with layers of syrupy complexity. And Smoky Soul just has a riveting combination of notes, with a umami tuning that strikes me as really unusual. Roberto Greco Rauque also sounds striking. Finally, I’m glad you mentioned For The Scent of It Dreaming in Tonka, which surprised me when I sampled it.

I’m in the USA. If I were to win, I’d choose Olfactive Studio Smoky Soul, but all of the giveaways sound wonderful. Thanks!

  • Max Corvinus says:

Viole Nere – it is a timeless classic, a blossom of dark elegance that opens its powder-laden black petals on the skin, an ephemeral Belle epoche violet that sings of seduction and whispers of profound melancholy intertwined with haunting tranquility. As Oscar Wilde stated, violets evoke the memories of dead romances.
Redolent of Victorian aristocracy, this Gothic masterpiece is a reminder that only true love can defeat death and withstand the ravages of time.

For me this fragrance represents the dualities of darkness and charm, beauty and sorrow, love and death – the dualities upon which I build my worlds as an artist.
    I live in Zagreb, Croatia

  • Fantastic article, kudos to Michelyn and Ermano who made it possible . I’ll share my thoughts on the fragrances I know, or want to try , and compare them with what Michelyn and Ermano are getting.
Frédéric Malle Heaven Can Wait, composed by Jean-Claude Elena
I was expecting way more from Heaven Can Wait , to me smells like more powdery love child of Cuir d’Ange by Hermés and Bois d’Iris by The Different Company (both again composed by Jean-Claude Ellena ) and with additional plum.
Jacques Fath L’Iris de Fath Eau de Parfum , composed by Patrice Revillard
The name of the fragrance L’Iris de Fath Parfum is the same like the enigmatic L’Iris de Fath L’Extrait , both tributes to wildly considered one of the best iris fragrances ever made Iris Gris . No wonder it took Patrice Revillard two , or according to Emmanuelle Varron four years to make. Every single iris lover should try it , well if the pockets are deep enough the pure parfum is always an option for €1470 / 30ml.
Masque Milano Russian Tea Oud , composed by Julien Rasquinet
Russian Tea is inspired by the traditional Russian ritual of drinking Samovar Tea , and eating home made raspberry jam . In my opinion Russian Tea is one of the best tea based fragrances ever created. Russian Tea Oud tweaks the proportions of the ingredients, the fragrance is even darker, way darker some would say.
Olfactive Studio Sépia Collection Smoky Soul, composed by Marc-Antoine Corticchiato Stars awesome but the seaweed accord is way too strong on my skin.
Azman Perfumes Risk, composed by Antonio Gardoni, knowing his work i was expecting super animalic fragrance, but in my opinion the fragrance is not as scary as i thought it would be. The variety of ouds is special, there’s booze , incense too , and I think the funky part is coming not from the ouds , but from civet and the musk , more sweaty than barnyard oudy.
Matière Premiere Vanilla Powder, composed by Aurélien Guichard
I’m a big time fan of Aurelien Guichard, Matiere Premiere , and the idea of focusing on one primary ingredient. To me the fragrance smells like a love child of Encens Suave and Santal Austral with pleasing coconut in the background.
I’m surprised Michelyn never mentioned incense, it’s well detectable on my skin , ambroxan too.
Meo Fusciuni Viole Nere , composed by Guiseppe Imprezzabile is not a linear violet fragrance , makes me feel like I’m walking through Mirkwood from J.R.R. Tolkien legendarium with rose , jasmine, cassis and cognac.
Nicolaï Parfumeur Createur Iris Medicis , composed by Patricia de Nicolai
Everybody loves a good iris fragrance, especially when it is composed by renowned perfumer like Patricia de Nicolai.
State of Mind Fanfarone Italiano , composed by Karine Dubreuil-Sereni is the first coffee based fragrance by the brand, all others are centered around tea.
Coffee, cognac, cassis, orange peel and rebellious and passionate atmosphere , in my opinion is not as cozy as Michelyn thinks.
Aurélien Guichard Vanilla Powder I’d like to win
Both profiles I already follow, @waltherp99bg
    Thanks a lot

  • Reading the top X lists is always a guilty pleasure of mine, and yours does not disappoint. While I am falling behind on the 2023 releases, the descriptions almost make me ‘feel’ the fragrances.
I am in the US and would love to win a bottle of either Viole Nere or smoky Soul

    Hello from UK
The very good fragrance year from Michelyn Camen and Ermano Picco is consisted of
Frédéric Malle Heaven Can Wait woody floral from a master perfumer
Jacques Fath L’Iris de Fath Eau de Parfum .I’m not aware of the house but 2 years in the making mind blowing iris?
Masque Milano Russian Tea Oud . Syrupy raspberry smokiness and oud.
Azman Perfumes Risk .I’ve seen videos of Azman fragrances on YouTube, Redolessence also spoke of Majnoon highly in one of his Top 10 videos, but at least for now Azman fragrances are not available in UK.
When I read six natural ouds and civet I immediately thought how wearing Risk would be a difficult task …
Matière Premiere Vanilla Powder .Aurelien Guichard is a famous perfumer who made some really good fragrances like Gucci Intense Oud and This is Him from Zadig and Voltaire , his Matiere Premiere project i still need to try.Vanilla Powder is vanilla for those who don’t like gourmands, versatile, professional fragrance suited for multiple occasions , coconut i think will add some tropical flair to it.
Nicolaï Parfumeur Createur Iris Medicis . Up to date iris with palo santo and some sweetness
State of Mind Fanfarone Italiano. It sounds absolutely delicious…ristretto and biscuits?
Count me in for Matière Premiere Vanilla Powder
    Thank you kindly

I appreciate this review of a lot of new fragrance releases of 2023. I appreciate learning more about Roberto Greco Rauque, which has been a very talked about fragrance release this year. I hope to try it eventually. Also, I appreciate learning more about Olfactive Studio Sépia Collection Smoky Soul, and if I win the giveaway draw, then I’d like to win Smoky Soul. I still haven’t tried anything yet made by Marc-Antoine Corticchiato, and its description is interesting to me. I live in the U.S.A.

  • Viole Nere is amazing!!! I need to check out more from this line. Purple powder is interesting to me. So many good releases and now more I need to check into. I’d love to win Vanilla Powder. Thanks for the fantastic read. Usa

  • If I have to summarize the amount of pleasing to the eyes, and mind fragrance information
Abel Odor Black Anise dark tobacco with vanilla and blackcurrant
Frédéric Malle Heaven Can Wait, composed by Jean-Claude Elena Uncut Gem was underwhelming yes , Heaven Can Wait woody floral should be a lot better
Jacques Fath L’Iris de Fath Eau de Parfum , Green Water I’m familiar with , it’s been my grandpa’s signature scent for …. as far as I can remember. I like how L’Iris de Fath L’Eau de Parfum came to be, and Rania Naim and Patrice Revillard persistency to make a new fragrance, more modern sophisticated even peachy iris , and not sorely a copy to an icon from decades ago.
Masque Milano Russian Tea Oudm .Bravo to Masque Milano for releasing deeper and darker variation
Azman Perfumes Risk feels trailblazing , like a perfume I’d never forget , more playful than lustful .. maybe
Matière Premiere Vanilla Powder, composed by Aurélien Guichard
I was gifted a mini , 8ml of NeroliOranger. Vanilla Powder is way more complex, I like such sophisticated fragrances with a lot of depth. The premium vanilla , palo santo and coconut, the blend sounds magical.
Meo Fusciuni Viole Nere is vamp style of fragrance.
Nicolaï Parfumeur Createur Iris Medicis is sophisticated, yet rich and intense iris fragrance , with leather and sandalwood.
State of Mind Fanfarone Italiano is the artistic gourmand Michelyn wants to drink wow
If lucky I’d like to win Matière Premiere Vanilla Powder
    Thanks for the draw

Thanks for the great lists! So many great fragrances.

I’ve been reading a lot about Meo Fusciuni and would love to smell Viole Nere.

    Cheers from WI, USA

  • All in all the two adepts Michelyn Camen and Ermano Picco are found of the new fragrances they discovered in 2023. Out of all the best choices they made i have smelled only Nicolai Parfumeur Createur Iris Medicis. I’m curious about, on Ermano side
Frédéric Malle Heaven Can Wait due to the name of the brand alone, it’s Frédéric Malle after all
Jacques Fath L’Iris de Fath Eau de Parfum due to adept like Ermano Picco calling it mind-blowing
Masque Milano Russian Tea Oud due to mystical in syrupy raspberry smokiness report
    On Michelyn side
Matière Premiere Vanilla Powder, due to vanilla reimagined, 40% powdered resins , palo santo and coconut report. Such naturally smelling vanilla fragrances are not easy to find.
State of Mind Fanfarone Italiano due to chocolate covered biscotti and dark ristretto report.
Nicolai Parfumeur Createur Iris Medicis i have smelled. The fragrance surprised me , I was expecting sweet iris, with violet, leather and some spices but instead I smell mostly soft expensive leather from the first spray, spices and way less iris than expected. It is a beautiful fragrance just way more leathery than I thought it would be.
The vanilla reimagined Vanilla Powder I’d enjoy the most
    Much obliged

  • Respect for the fine Best of the year picks
Reading Michelyn Camen and Ermano Picco mini reviews makes me want to smell most , and 4 asap
Masque Milano Russian Tea Oud both Russian Tea and Russian Tea Oud are similar, the deeper and darker Oud i find appealing
Matière Premiere Vanilla Powder Novelty vanilla, overdose of raw materials ethically sourced by local farmers, rich and woody.
Nicolaï Parfumeur Createur Iris Medicis gilded iris ,warm and sweet and slightly powdery violet.
State of Mind Fanfarone Italiano delicious fragrance, who would think of chocolate biscotti and ristretto other than me now
Matière Premiere Vanilla Powder would be fabulous
    Thank you kindly, from EU

  • What a read
Jacques Fath L’Iris de Fath Eau de Parfum ,
I was wearing Jacques Fath fragrances in the 90’s, especially Green Water. I like the way L’Iris de Fath L’Eau de Parfum was made , through 2 years of determination by Patrice Revillard , and up-to-date approach.
Masque Milano Russian Tea Oud .Russian Tea is so special, the leather, mint and tea are staples, I also really like the addition of the juicy berries, giving the fragrance some modern contemporary twist. Maybe the mint is replaced with oud…
Matière Premiere Vanilla Powder, made by Aurélien Guichard
I enjoy wearing woody vanilla fragrances all year round, Vanilla Powder is perfect the Fall and Winter.Honestly I’m not sure I’ll be able to tell the difference between the all natural Madagascar Vanilla Absolute, and natural Palo Santo Aurelien Guichard used in Vanilla Powder , and some synthetic substitute . What I personally like in the fragrance is the grow up , yet modern profile , and the fact there’s a little bit of coconut and dry palo santo.
Meo Fusciuni Viole Nere Shadows… everything is leading to a cryptic message you have to discover for yourself.
Nicolaï Parfumeur Createur Iris Medicis is so fulfilling, and joyful . Premium iris , leather, neroli and vanilla, I live for such moments , and fragrances.
State of Mind Fanfarone Italiano Laid back approach present in Fanfarone Italiano is so typical for most Italians, and also Spaniards.
The universal and rebellious message in the fragrance is quite clear , drink ristretto , cookies and don’t worry oneself .
I’d prefer Matière Premiere Vanilla Powder
    Exciting giveaway, USA
    Regards

  • I always look forward to best of lists. Mychelyn has a great taste and I always enjoyed reading her picks through the years.
But then these last couple years I’ve been disconnected and haven’t tried anything new, except for a couple things here and there.
I love Russian Tea and I didn’t know that there was an oud version of it! All the selections look great.
Live in US and would love to win the Smoky Soul.

  • Happy Holidays, and Happy New Year Cafleurebon, I’m glad I found you
I’m very picky about fragrances I’m wearing, and Matière Premiere Vanilla Powder and Nicolai Parfumeur Createur Iris Medicis i find impressive, first is made with 40% concentration of powered resins , Madagascar Vanilla, palo santo and coconut, and the second with iris , leather and saffron.
    Vanilla Powder is my choice
    Thanks a bunch
