WE LOVE THIS STORE: DS & Durga NYC + NoLita Draw

NoLita has become New York City premier fragrance shopping mecca. The latest addition and must visit is the new DS & Durga NYC boutique. Yes, the indie fragrance brand debuted their boutique on Mulberry Street a couple of blocks over from Elizabeth Street pioneers Le Labo, Atelier Cologne and more recently NEST and Claus Porto.

DS & Durga David Seth Moltz and Kavi Ahuja Moltz

David Seth Moltz and Kavi Ahuja Moltz

In 2007 self-taught perfumer David Seth Moltz and (soon to be wife) Kavi Ahuja (A.K.A. Durga) crafted some holiday gifts of tonics and aftershaves as gifts. The next year they launched D.S. & Durga and never looked back. They are now one of America’s premier independent brands. Based in Brooklyn, the award winning fragrance house opened their Flagship store in Manhattan this past February and launched the celebratory perfume  D.S., and the Body Line concurrently.

I made a point to visit upon opening for a first look. While up and running minor details were still being ironed out. It quickly took shape by my second visit. And participation in events like Sniffapalooza’s Spring Fling 2019 showed the store is open and ready for the public.

The Brooklyn duo brought their brand Mulberry Street with a glass storefront resembling a hip art gallery mixing in a punk rock attitude. Nothing warm and fuzzy here. David was quick to add that it was Kavi, who previously worked as an architect, oversaw the project with the architecture firm K&Co. While David gave me the tour I took in the store’s ambiance and asked a few questions.

Why Manhattan and not Brooklyn? “This location, the corner of Mulberry & Prince, was chosen because NoLita is one of my favorite neighborhoods for its shopping and restaurants and, I had previously worked at Cafe Gitane (around the corner) in the early part of the naughties. In 2002 it was the hottest place to be. So this is where it had to be!”

Did either have any brick and mortar retail experience prior to opening this location? David said not really, but it was their successful pop-up in Williamsburg last year that gave them a taste for what to expect of the brick and mortar experience.”

What was the timeline from conception to execution? “We signed the lease in August of 2018 and completed the built out in seven months, opening February 7th. We thought we’d open in December but construction takes much longer (especially getting the permits pulled in NYC).”

Knowing what you know now would you have done anything differently? “Just planned out longer – we originally wanted to launch during the holidays.”

DS & Durga Hiko Men review

 DS & Durga  Hiko Men

I first met David at the Elements Showcase in 2012. We bonded over music (and fragrance). Our love for the Blues and Punk Rock intersected. David it appeared was on a mission to bridge the gap between scent and sound.  An example of that would be the limited edition project DS & Durga released at the end of last year that celebrates the music of Duran Duran by releasing four fragrances that mark four decades of Duran Duran’s music.

Music is a big part of the brand’s ethos so I asked how much will it play in the ambiance of the store? “A ton – playlists always playing. We plan to screen films.  And we will have some shows. You know, basically, I’m forever thinking I’ll get back into playing music.”  Will hosting events be key to the store’s development? “Major. Finally, we have a stage to invite people into the depth of our fragrances and our story.  We can also collaborate with friends and brands in a really meaningful way.”

I asked, “So have you decided how you and Kavi will split the time between the store and Brooklyn office? “Both of us plan on being in and out of the store for meetings and events but both work full time at the office in Brooklyn”.

D.S. & Durga tee shirts and auto fragrances

Auto Fragrance and  DS & Durga T-shirts

I wondered if they could foresee D.S. & Durga NYC being used as a testing ground for future releases? Maybe an in-store exclusive fragrance? David was not sure yet. But they do have two exclusives already, Auto fragrance and T-shirts.

D.S, and Durga Candles

Candle Collection

D.S. & Durga NYC carries their full range of fragrances (24), body lotions (3) and body wash (3), soap (1), auto scents (3), and candles (8). What I really appreciate is that their packaging is engineered to be foam free, recyclable paper, and their shipping materials are biodegradable. Their formulas are all vegan.

DS & Durga Fragrance in Nollita

Fragrance Table at DS & Durga NYC

At the Fragrance Table, I questioned David about some of the older fragrances that are no longer available. He said that it was either due to the fact that some were never meant to be more than limited runs while others based on ingredients that are no longer available (IFRA regulations which are changing all the time). And with others, “we can keep them in the collection by going back and sub in other ingredients and rebuild them”.

 Wall display

David was curious about what notes I gravitate toward. I threw out my love for citrus, patchouli, vanilla, and vetiver. We smelled a number of perfumes on the table and David suggested D.S.Amber Kiso, Italian Citrus and White Peacock Lily. Nailed it. David assembled a generous sample bag for me to take home.

You know what we are doing is maybe extremely unique outside of the realm of perfume. It’s a whole world you can enter. Perfume is on the level of writing poetry, music. It is an art.” –David Seth Moltz

  • I haven’t tried any of the D.S. & Durga fragrances or body products but I enjoyed reading about the journey that led to developing this brand. I will be in NYC in September and winning the gift card would be a great opportunity to buy something at the store. I live in the USA.

  • I love the success story. Humble begginings, patience, and a constant focus led to a store on a busy NY corner!!

  • The pictures were great and I really liked the quote from David about perfume being like poetry or music, art. I would like to try a DS & Durga fragrance or maybe a discovery sample pack so would use the gift card on a fragrance or sample pack if I was to win. I live in CT so would love to take the train in to NYC and visit the store but if unable to online would have to suffice. Thanks.

  • I like that their shipping materials are biodegradable. My favorite D.S. & Durga is White Peacock Lily. If lucky, I would choose Amber Kiso. USA

  • Glad to know where the Durga name came from. I don’t know what I’d buy should I be chosen. US

Nice article. I liked that david used to work in the area and liked it so much that is where the shop had to be. They sound like nice artistic and creative people. If i won i would have to use the gift certificate on Amber Kiso that is an amazing scent. Thanks as always for the giveaway.

Oh my gosh, I’m so excited they finally have a storefront, and in NYC! It seems like the perfect place for them, nestled in among other smaller brands, but they stand out to me more than any of the others listed! There are so many I’ve been meaning to try from them, and now I have the perfect excuse to go visit New York again. Amber Kiso and D.S. are on my to-try list also, I would love to hear more about what you think of them after sampling! I also think it’s cool that they have an in-store exclusive, although somewhat annoying for those who can’t get out to NY as much as they’d like. There are no downsides to their sustainable, responsible approach to production and packaging though! I’d love to be able to put the gift card toward a purchase at their store! It might be Amber Kiso or D.S., but it could also be Mississippi Medicine or Bowmakers, which I’ve also been dying to try! It would depend on which ones I wind up liking best! I am in the US 🙂

Am amazing look at how a house evolves from a business point of view as well as an esthetic one. I enjoyed it immensely. Thank you. I’m in the USA

Looks like I will have to take a visit to the store this summer. I love that the store showcases music and fragrance. Thanks for the review and the draw. I’m in the US.

I really like how much music influences the brand’s ethos and their brick-and-mortar store. They have so many great fragrances that I haven’t tried, so I’d probably use the $50 gift card towards a couple sample sets. I’m in the USA.

I’ll definitely need to stop by the store next time I’m in the city! It looks beautiful and so inviting! I love my bottle of Durga and have been coveting a bottle of Amber Kiso for awhile now so, I know exactly what I would get the gift card. It’s cool to know they have auto scents in the store as well. Thanks for the draw. I’m in the US.

  • Thanks for featuring this house, Hernando! I find it amazing when people follow their passions and they succeed, like D.S. & Durga. I liked the part when you mentioned your favorite notes and David was able to make great recommendations for you. Thanks for this opportunity. – CA, USA

  • Loved hearing they may be doing much more with bands and music in the future. They are so creative with design, merchandise, concepts. If I won, I’d probably put it toward a candle for my birthday.

  • I loved reading about the connection between sound and scent; I find that, aside from personal memories, some scents are inextricably tied to albums that I happened to be listening to during the same period. D.S. & Durga’s Coriander has been on my wish list for some time, so I’d happily put the gift card towards that long-overdue purchase, either online or the next time I’m in NYC, which is a few times a year. I’m in the US.

  • What a gorgeous shop! I love all these boutiques in Brooklyn. How I wish I still lived there!
    I live in the USA.

  • I love DS&Durga and am so happy they have their own brick and mortar now! I already have several of their scents — Italian Citrus, Coriander, Bowmakers, Cowboy Grass, El Cosmico (MY FAVE) — so choosing another will be a (delightful) ordeal. I’d likely get Freetrapper or Mississippi Medicine. I really hope I can go to the store itself later this year when I’m on the East Coast.

  • I love that vetyver t-shirt. I’ve tried El Cosmico, would use the gift card to buy other samples. I live in CA. Thanks!

I loved the back story to the flagship store and that they are vegan friendly! I love the concept of music and fragrance. I would use the gift card to buy some of the body products. Thanks for the giveaway and I live in the US!

  • Enjoyed the story and looks nice. Not sure what to purchase yet. Like to check out the store one day. Thanks, US

Ok, I had no idea that DS & Durga offered car scents! I absolutely love that and wish more independent makers did so, I’d love to have my car smell like a niche fragrance. So thanks for that info. I’d probably use my GC toward White Peacock Lily (and then of course I’d have to throw an auto scent in the basket too…) I’m in the USA.

I am always over the moon when a brick and mortar store opens, especially in this day of a certain monolith I don’t want to mention. And on Mulberry Street! Now, I don’t want to be too negative about online shopping because I LOVE the D.S. & Durga website. I first discovered this brand in Tokyo. The department store called Loft carried the line. Oh, how I love Burning Barbershop. I think I would try something new (for me), maybe Freetrapper. I live in the USA.

This is such a lovely store! I had the pleasure of visiting this past weekend and I’m obsessed!
