Arquiste L’Or de Louis Review (Rodrigo Flores-Roux) 2023 + Versailles Orangerie Giveaway

April 1687: In his workshop in the rue des Gravilliers in the Quartier de Temple, the age’s great royal perfumer, Simon Barbe, inscribes instructions. Enfleurage techniques for jasmin, muscade, and roses are recorded in careful detail. As he dips his quill in its inkwell again, Barbe considers the best techniques for the scent he will create for His Majesty. It will, of course, be an extraction of fleurs d’oranger, the king’s favourite, perhaps his obsession. Across the Seine and through the forests, at the Palace of Versailles is the Orangerie, built some twenty years ago to house the delicate bitter orange trees, transported once upon a time from Italy, through the dark French winters. Under the “Sun King,” the structure has recently been widened and lengthened so that it is now a veritable cathedral. Here, thousands of orange trees luxuriate during the cold months, heated by special cedar bonfires.

It is April now, and they wait. Soon, thousands of small orange globes will hang from the boughs like a thousand miniature balls of fire, living emblems of the Sun King himself. The branches are pregnant with fluffy blossoms, their promised scent creamy and golden, as bitter and sweet as a love poem. Over the centuries to come, fleurs d’oranger will walk brides down church aisles, cling to the wrists of the soignee, and waft across crowded rooms like secret messages. Barbes cannot know that now, and toils on his formula, hoping to create a perfume for the ages. Hoping, perhaps, to imagine something that smells very much like Arquiste L’Or de Louis, a golden, honeyed, time travelling orange blossom fragrance that is so sumptuously beautiful Louis XIV would have granted it a royal commission.

Created by Givaudan master perfumer and Vice President of Perfumery, Roderigo Flores-Roux working once again in tandem with Arquiste founder Carlos Huber, Arquiste L’Or de Louis is “a vintage-style orange blossom with a warm, woody background, including notes of orange blossom absolute, pomegranate and honey.” In a nod to Versailles opulence, the bottles contain flecks of 24 karat gold that make them seem like glittery kaleidoscopes when held to light. I have written this before, but no one does vintage-tinged perfumes like Flores-Roux. His compositions reference older compositions through elegant use of high-quality raw materials and a deep understanding of what makes those older perfumes tick. Here, mossy-citric notes recall old school chypres while a quiet, musky animalism runs through the perfume, keeping the creamy orange blossom and jasmine well from girlishness in the way of old Guerlains like Jasmiralda. But L’Or de Louis is not simply an homage to older styles. Flores-Roux poises its retro quality against a brightness that spirals through the perfume like a spinning top from start to finish and genderless wood notes.

The Orangery Versailles

Arquiste L’Or de Louis’ opening is breathtaking: a glittering arpeggio of aldehydes, which, though not listed, must be here in the top notes, alongside the bitter brightness of bergamot and fresh, silky jasmine. In a moment, though, this ebullient tempo slows to an adagio as the the slow, sensuous drip of honey seeps across creamy orange blossoms. The tree flowers smell like they are opening in slow motion before me. I get every aspect of the blossom: its lactonic sweetness, acidulous green stem, and then the smooth young wood of the trunk. Pomegranate, with its musty juiciness, adds a darker shading that adds balance to all that gorgeous, ripe floralcy.

Two hours later, L’Or de Louis has kept its shimmer. The orange blossom remains at the center, flanked by jasmine and now orris, still buoyant thanks to the bergamot that circles back and around. Coming back to the fragrance on my wrist again, just seconds later, I smell warm skin, spilled honey, and that poignant, soprano drift of mock orange when the air is sun-warm, and the breeze is just right.

In the dry-down, there is a slim tendril of smoke. Four hundred years ago, at Versailles, the bonfires to heat the trees are dying down. Simon Barbe tilts his head in acknowledgement and smiles.

Notes: Orange blossom absolute, pomegranate, bergamot, jasmine absolute, honey, Florentine orris, musk, cedar wood, firewood smoke, cade wood, oislet de chypre (a resinous accord dating from the 17th century).

Disclaimer: Bottle of L’Or de Louis generously given to me by Arquiste. My opinions, as always, are my own.

Arquiste L’Or de Louis is one of my favorites. I bought it when it first came out. It is everything I want, orange blossom with iris. I love both of these notes. Mine doesn’t have gold flecks, but it still smells fabulous and vintage. Thank you for the wonderful article! NY state

  • Thank you for introducing me to this house. I am falling in love with vintage styles, classics really. And one of my all time favorite scents is orange blossom. I would love to win this scent. In maryland.

  • I would love to wander through the orangeries……sounds magical. Over the top with the gold flecks. I am interested in the oislet de chypre accord. My favorite from Arquiste is Anima Dulcis and Architects Club which reminds me of my very first niche purchase, but grown up version. Thanks for the chance. USA.

  • Thank you, Lauryn, for the review. I love your description of the orange blossoms inArquiste L’Or de Louis’ opening: “its lactonic sweetness, acidulous green stem, and then the smooth young wood of the trunk.” Each note intricately weaves into the olfactory tapestry, giving a complete and vivid representation of the orange blossom in all its glory.

I’m very excited to rediscover this perfume house. I’ve tried Arquiste Flor y Canto and am addicted to the magnolia. The tuberose is also super intoxicating.

Followed on Instagram. Much love from NY,US!

  • Oh…orange blossom! So versatile and so very lovely. I loved reading this article and about linking it to Versailles! The notes in it and combining it with orris and the other touches of smoke and woods sounds divine. I haven’t tried anything but the house yet so this sounds like a lovely intro. I live in the USA. Thanks for the giveaway!

  • Would love to see more EU-only giveaways. I know this is mostly a USA based blog, but still. EU-based perfume brands mostly always send worldwide, while USA-based brands only ship nationally. I know it’s expensive to ship across the Pacific, but surely this goes both ways. Anyhow, this perfume sounds great, would love to try it someday.

  • Hello from Florida, and thank you to Lauryn for the review!

I love orange blossoms — orange groves in bloom are a treat for all the senses! L’Or de Louis sounds like a great tribute to the note, and I’d love to give it a try.

  • I enjoyed how Lauryn described the bottles as glittery kaleidoscopes when held to the light due to them containg flecks of 24 karat gold. I’ve never tried any Arquiste fragrances. Thank you for the opportunity. From New York, USA.

  • This sounds more like a world experience than a fragrance. Or maybe it sounds like time travel? Gorgeous descriptions! My current favorite Arquiste is Indigo Smoke, but I also love the Architect’s Club and Misfit.

  • Lauryn! ❤️❤️❤️ Love Love your analysis and beautiful writing! I own a bottle of this gorgeous fragrance and it is exactly as you describe! ❤️❤️❤️

  • Arquiste L’Or de Louis sounds like a ray of sunshine. A vintage style orange blossom perfume with notes of honey, pomegranate and woods sounds warm, luxurious and elegant. I have tried a few of Rodrigo Flores-Roux compositions (Commodity Leather and a few DKNY fragrances) and he does have a very deft touch with complex scents. I do not have a favorite Arquiste scent. I’m in the US

  • A vintage style orange blossom? Opulence and gold flecks in the bottle, you say? I must try this. Orange blossom fragrances just make me smile. I enjoyed reading Lauryn’s thoughts on Flores-Rouxs perfuming style.

I have only tried one Arquiste fragrance. I have a sample of The Architects Club sitting right by my evening chair. It is a gorgeous. A well designed, subtle vanilla dream. A very cozy scent. I’m loving it!

I would love to win the travel spray of L’Or de Louis. I’m in VA, USA.

  • Arquiste L’Or de Louis sounds lush and beautiful with its range of orange blossom expressions and vintage structure. The drydown strikes me as more of a surprise, including a bit of cade-painted smoke, which can become overpowering but seems expertly deployed here. Great review, Lauryn.

I’m in the USA. I haven’t tried any Arquiste fragrances.

  • I have been lucky enough to try a sample of L’Or de Louis and I can verify that it is gorgeous! I don’t normally like orange blossom but the warmth of the fragrance that Lauryn spoke of really grabbed my heart as well. I would love to win a travel spray! I’m in MN, USA and my favorite form Arquiste besides this one is Indigo Smoke.

  • These notes sounds delicious.

Notes: Orange blossom absolute, pomegranate, bergamot, jasmine absolute, honey, Florentine orris, musk, cedar wood, firewood smoke, cade wood, oislet de chypre (a resinous accord dating from the 17th century).

  • I’ve been meaning to try Arquiste fragrances for a while now. Being Mexican, I always root for Rodrigo and hope he does well. I’m a fan of the sound of a vintage-style orange blossom fragrance. Big fan of chypres with moss and citrus as well. My friend is older and he gets excited when I tell him I’m trying something that has animalic facets. This fragrance sounds lovely and I’m glad to see that orange blossom remains throughout. My grandma has a bitter orange tree back in Mexico, so I’ve always been a fan of notes related to it. I live in the US.

I would love to try something from Arquiste. I enjoy floral fragrances, and “L’or de Louis” sounds like an interesting one. I’m interested in seeing what the smokiness in the base is like in combination with the other notes. Also, I’m very interested in seeing what the oislet de chypre note is like. I live in MD, U.S.A.

THank you for the wonderful review Lauryn!

One of the things that I have read a lot about Roderigo Flores-Roux is his knowledge of materials and old compositions.

THis scent is truly an homage to the Orangerie de Versailles both in ingredients and character. I love the use of the oislet de chypre accord, which is something new to me.

WOuld love to get a nose on this.
