Top Ten Fragrances 2022

Let’s be candid, my beauties: when there are 154 pages listed of fragrances released in 2022 – it’s more than a little daunting: it’s flat out terrifying. I’ve dutifully trawled my way through them all, wondering if I have forgotten/overlooked anything along the way. I sincerely doubt that anyone I know has smelt them all.  I observe, however – that there appear to be certain trends. Natural/botanical perfumery continues to be in steady and fine nick – and has had a wonderful year. It seems to be in many perfumers’ interests to provide ‘clean’, sustainable fragrances: I don’t foresee that this trend will be disappearing any time soon. Ouds, beast mode, aka nuclear sillage scents – and tea and coffee remain wildly popular in general. More often than not, I come across perfumes which are valued according to their olfactory decibel level – and as a very active evaluator and consultant over the past year, this appears self-evident. Vanillas, chocolate, caramelised gourmands are everywhere. It’s a matter of personal taste: there’s something for everyone. I’ve elected to highlight those perfumes which I’ve personally experienced and feel are extraordinary; your list might be quite different. To avoid favoritism, I’ve listed my Top Ten Fragrance 2022 in alphabetical order according to brand. ~ Ida Meister, Deputy and Natural Perfumery Editor

Areej Le Doré Civet de Nuit  (Russian Adam and Sultan Pasha): one of the year’s finest elixirs dwells in the dominion of desire. When the nose happens upon something this singular one cannot ignore it. Vivid animalics, heady white blossoms, precious resins, wisps of tobacco, oakmoss – are heralded by aldehydes and heliotrope, which temporarily lull you into a false sense of docility. A magnificent work. Notes: heliotrope accord, aldehydes, antique civet tincture, night blooming jasmine, ylang ylang, oakmoss, benzoin, olibanum, tobacco, white ambergris, castoreum, sandalwood Mysore, styrax, labdanum, musk accord

DSH Perfumes Rosé/Vachi/Cigarette Fétiche (Dawn Spencer Hurwitz):TIE- DSH Perfumes Rosé, from the 3 Roses Collection – was a sleeper favorite, the one I least expected to adore. As limpid as a rose aquarelle, this aldehyde-kissed beauty surprises with its affable nature and extraordinary delicacy – a sparkling sweet/tart cocktail which delights. Vachi is sandalwood to the nth power: a complex, spicy, velvety perfume which includes the precious Mysore variety (the Golden Standard) and all things delectable. Cigarette Fétiche was one of the many DSH perfumes I didn’t have the opportunity to review (Dawn is so prolific, one could spend each day reviewing yet another oeuvre) – but from my small sample alone I was compelled to purchase it.  There’s a lovely ashen lick of smoke combined with tobacco, oakmoss, birch tar, labdanum, spices, cognac and flowers; it’s irresistible. DSH Rosé Notes: aldehydes, fruit notes, white cognac, rose petal accord, rosé wine accord, ambrette seed, Australian sandalwood. DSH Vachi Notes: pink peppercorn, black sesame accord, black plum accord, white peach, champaca leaf, champaca absolute, butter CO2, cinnamon bark, cardamom seed, osmanthus absolute, rosa centifolia absolute, Egyptian rose geranium, jasmine sambac, tobacco absolute, Indonesian vetiver, Gurjun balsam, myrrh gum, Atlas cedarwood, Australian sandalwood, Mysore sandalwood, oud, frankincense, Siam benzoin. DSH Cigarette Fétiche Notes: ambergris, amyris, Atlas cedarwood, Australian sandalwood, birch tar, brown oakmoss, choya ral, clove leaf, cognac, cured fruit accord, East Indian patchouli, grandiflorum jasmine, guaiacwood, hay absolute, immortelle, Indonesian vetiver, labdanum, Spanish orange flower absolute, orris, Peru balsam, spice notes, tobacco absolute, tobacco smoke accord, tonka bean absolute, vanilla absolute

Frederico Parfums Blooming Amber: (Justin Frederico): best pro lifelong perfumer striking out on their own: For the sake of transparency, you should know that I’ve worked as evaluator for Justin for several years (and with multiple projects and creative directors). During his long career Justin has been employed by IFF and Givaudan, and Blooming Amber is one of the most enjoyable, versatile representatives of this genre: it’s plush but not ponderous, a honeyed floral which borders on gourmand territory. Notes: mandarin, orange, honey, lily-of-the-valley, jasmine, lavender, neroli, amber, musk, vanilla, cashmere, patchouli, green moss

Goldfield & Banks Purple Suede (Ilias Ermenidis): I first experienced Purple Suede at Esxence Milano 2022, a love-at-first-sniff. It’s difficult to resist Tasmanian lavender gentled by rose, accented with oud, amber, and anisic hyssop, all interwoven with a seductive suede accord. Tenacious, sophisticated and unique, this is a fragrance to treasure. Notes: leather, lavender, coriander, hyssop, patchouli, cashmeran, amber, civet

Jorum Studios Scottish Odyssey (Euan McCall)– best collection: There are several noteworthy collections which graced the annals of 2022, so it is a close call – but Euan McCall’s Jorum Scottish Odyssey is unlike any other. The perfumer’s ability to conjure so many aspects of his environment was a real coup – from the flinty, thorny Highland Rose to the honeyed floral/herbal mellowness of Gorseland, the salty peaty hearthside whiskiness of Firewater culminating in the sophisticated Celtic fairytale quality of Healing Berry. If it were a painting in toto, Scottish Odyssey would be considered museum-worthy. Rose Highland Notes: Azalea, Sweet Basil, Pink pepper, Bell Heather, Clove Bud, Primrose, Rhododendron, Jasmine Absolute, Geranium oil, Rose Absolute, Atlantic Oak, Flag Iris, Vetiver, Ambergris, Mineral Accord. Gorseland Notes: Pineapple weed, Neroli oil, Chamomile, Gorseflower, Crab Apple, Lemon oil, Astilbe & Lavender Absolute, Gooseberry, Milk-vetch, Elderflower, Catchfly, Woodruff, Gorsewood, Zdravetz, Kush Accord. Firewater Notes: Black Tea, Juniper Berry, Nettle, Grapefruit, Beardtongue, Osmanthus Absolute, Ginger, Bracken & Larch, Birchwood, Sugar Kelp, Guaiacwood, Vetiver, Oakwood, Benzoin, Labdanum Absolute, Peat Accord. Healing Berry Notes: Artemisia, Blackcurrant Absolute, Tayberry, Willowherb, Sloes, Wild Mint, Rose Absolute, Logan Berry, Buckler Fern, Violet Leaf Absolute, Raspberry leaf, Orris Butter, Himalayan Balsam & Cereal Accord

Fragments by NVC: Creative Director Neela Vermeire has harbored a lifelong love for mosaics – the primary source of inspiration behind her latest compositions. Each fragrance possesses its own inimitable character: Nemus (composed by Bertrand Duchaufour) sings with citrus tea, a pinch of salinity, and soft woods; Purpureu (signed by Cristiano Canali), with its simmeringly dark gourmand comprised of dried fig, pepper, licorice, immortelle, dark rum, leather and tobacco – and Thyina (by Fabrice Olivieri) is a sandalwood-based melange softly accented with lavender and violet, coffee and hazelnut, and precious resinous materials. A heavenly trio. Nemus Notes: cedrat, bergamot, lemon, ginger, clary sage, geranium, tea, cedar, oudh, ambergris, nagarmotha, frankincense, patchouli. Purpureum Notes: pepper, licorice, dried fig, magnolia, dark rum, coffee, cacao, immortelle, brown tobacco, tonka, labdanum, myrrh, leather. Thyina Notes: pimento berry, lavender, violet, hazelnut, coffee, sandalwood, amyris, tolu balsam, Peru balsam, styrax, birch tar

Providence Perfume Co. Lapsang Lover (Charna Ethier)-the best natural perfume of 2022. It It was extremely difficult to choose amongst many gorgeous natural perfumes this year, because the contenders were both plentiful and beautiful – but Lapsang Lover is a perfume I find myself reaching for over and over. It is a jewel which gleams darkly, clad in exquisitely tarry black tea, myrrh, labdanum, celestial rose, honey and resins. An addiction. Notes: lapsang tea tincture, black tea, labdanum, fossilized amber, myrrh, rose, resins, cardamom, honey

Puente Perfumes Medusa (Eliam Puente):Medusa is Eliam Puente’s first fragrance, and blissfully, there are more to come. I was thrilled when approached by this old friend embarking upon a new creative path. Medusa is one of the headiest, most voluptuous perfumes in recent memory, and worthy of a cherished vintage status, with its inclusion of the finest quality materials. It’s dizzingly envoûtant and erotic. Notes: jasmine sambac and grandiflorum, Moroccan rose, orange blossom, orris root, benzoin, vetiver, oakmoss, civet

Santi Burgas Verdant Delirivm (Santi Burgas): this was another fragrant revelation from this past year’s Esxence. Everything you could desire from a green floral and more – sparkling citrus paired with dashes of mint and oregano pave the way for rose and jasmine. Despite the inclusion of two distinct vanillas, Verdant Delirivm never cloys – and the smoky Haitian vetiver in the base is a pleasure. Notes: Calabrian bergamot, yuzu, jasmine, Bulgarian rose, mint, oregano, Madagascar vanilla, Bourbon vanilla, Haitian vetiver

Senyokô Hora de la Verdad (Euan McCall): Five months ago I felt this to be among 2022’s finest, and my opinion hasn’t wavered since then. Blood and beauty in the bull ring, enwreathed in rose and geranium – saffron-burnished leather, deftly spiced. Lashings of labdanum, vetiver. This took my breath away, and I hope to purchase a bottle in the near future. Notes: bergamot, Seville orange, coriander seed, Timut pepper, pink pepper, Spanish saffron, Turkish rose absolute, geranium absolute, vetiver, leather, ambergris, musk, Spanish labdanum

Understandably, there were many honorable mentions this year! Each will receive an award. Of considerable note: Aftelier Boheme Confection, MIZU Brand Floral Delusion and St Clair Scents Moving On– all of which happen to be natural perfumes. Scents of Wood Oud in Calvados (Natasha Côté-Mouzannar) was another aromatic charmer, a symphony of aged calvados snuggled into a duvet composed of oakwood, cedar and oud – all the while garnished with pink pepper, bergamot, cocoa and rose de mai.

Kudos to all of our perfumers this year! Well done – all of you. May the coming year find you all productive, creative, healthy and happy…

Top Ten Fragrance 2022 Lauryn (collage by Olya)

2022 was bewildering for many of us. Malaise has set in as we struggle to come to terms with a world unmade by the pandemic and war in Ukraine, the polarization of political factions, and here, in the States, rising crime. But, as so often happens in the mist of dark times, or perhaps as a response to them, the creative spirit burns through and brings small gifts of comfort. It was a particularly heartening to see a parade of wonderful oud fragrances focusing on the complexities of the real thing, and a few of found their way onto my list. These last twelve months have poured out a cornucopia of soulful, inventive scents that, like friendly spirits, have guided me, invisibly but deeply felt, through some tough weeks. In fact, there were so many beautiful fragrances produced this year that I found it difficult to narrow my favourites to ten. But here are my Top Ten Fragrance 2022 in alphabetical order; may they bring you light in the coming year. Lauryn Beer, Senior Editor

Angelos Creations Olfactives Fougeriste (Angelos Balamis): One of 2022’s most joyous fragrances, Fougeriste is a delightful exemplar of the fougere style, given a spring to its step with an overdose of brilliant citrus. Angelos Balamis has produced so many gorgeous perfumes in the last two years that it was terribly difficult to hone in on just one. Fougeres don’t often interest me; Fougeriste did more than that: it made me laugh with happiness.

Azman Perfumes I Am Darkness (Nutt Wesshasartat): Not since Andre Lebreton’s brilliant Grimoire has there been a green incense that caught me quite like I Am Darkness. Dubai-based Azman Perfumes has created a beautiful incense fragrance built, unconventionally, on a chypre structure. The result is a mysterious, smoky green scent with a warm, floral heart and woody base that still somehow seems airy and warm.

Bogue Profumo 10EDT and 20 EDP (tie) (Antonio Gardoni): Antonio Gardoni’s 10EDT and 20EDP, created for the tenth anniversary of Bogue Profumo and the twentieth anniversary of Luckyscent, are floral doppelgangers sharing nearly all same notes but with changes in tempo and heft. Opulent, frisky and thoroughly lovely, these are my favourite Bogues since Mem.

Chatillon Lux Agua Fresca (Shawn Maher): A deliciously nectarous but airy blend of apricot, yuzu, ripe melon and berry, invigorated with cucumber, deepened with vetiver and smoothed with cream, Agua Fresca is a summer splash in more than one sense – it was one of the best summer releases of 2022. Perfect for hot days when you long for something other than citrus or aquatics.

Marissa Zappas Smoked Jasmine Black Tea (Marissa Zappas):Smoked Jasmine Black Tea from Marissa Zappas was inspired “by the scent of black tea spilled over an old book … (it) harkens back to Emily Dickinson, her dried flowers and poetry.” For me, though, this is the fragrance of wet jasmine flowers spilling from the Upper Westside bodegas mingling with steam from a cup of Ceylon tea. One of my favourite tea fragrances to date.

Top Ten Fragrance 2022

Masque Milano White Whale (Christian Alori): Masque Milano’s heartbreakingly beautiful coda to their Opera collection, White Whale, is perhaps the most heartbreakingly beautiful violet-ambergris perfumes I’ve ever smelled. Inspired by Melville’s Moby Dick, White Whale is a magnificent and poignant conclusion to one of independent perfumery’s best flagship lines.

Parfums Dusita Montri (Pissara Umajivani): I first sampled Pissara Umajivani’s tribute to her late father in the Dusita shop in Paris last Fall, and was immediately enchanted. Elegant, spicy and even leaning into gourmand, Montri walks a tightrope between different styles of perfumery with the skill of an aerial artist. One of the best releases from this house.

Olivier Durbano M.Oldavite (Olivier Durbano):Herbal, gentle, and leafy, Olivier’s M.Oldavite blends angelica with palo santo, incense and moss dots for a comforting scent that emanates a soft glow. If you sometimes find incense too churchy, this translucent green fragrance is a gem.

Rogue Perfumery L’Homme M LaCroix (Manuel Cross):The first leather fragrance from Manuel Cross is a gorgeous combination of rough-and-tumble and refinement, earthiness and elegance. L’Homme M.LaCroix combines elements of classic citrus and leather chypres, then roughs them up with a slap of scoundrel before smoothing them out into the smoothest, silkiest leather to hit these shores in years.

Sarah Baker Gold Spot (Chris Maurice): The little sister to last year’s oud-centric gourmand, Loudo, Gold Spot deserves her place in the limelight. Sultry yet cozy and loaded with off-sweet dessert smells of butterscotch, cream, and dark chocolate, poised against a backdrop of dry, cracked wood and resinous aromas of agar wood and oud, Gold Spot is the most approachably delicious thing I’ve sampled this year.

Sultan Pasha Turath (Sultan Pasha): Turath is a seriously opulent, gorgeous – and thank to a generous dose of civet and musk accord, skanky – “beast” that blends two high-quality Hindu ouds, three rose absolutes, and of whole lot of naughtiness. It’s an amalgam of winey blooms, cracked wood, smoke, and carnality: Claudia Cardinale, Aldonza, the goddess Al-Lat, and Maria Callas all morphing into one. This has got to be the sexiest perfume of the year.

Artisan Perfumer of the Year: And finally, in a year of so many great releases, it is hard to single out just one house or perfumer. But I have to give the nod jointly for Artisan Perfumer of the Year to Angelos Balamis and Manuel Cross. These two brilliantly talented gents have outdone themselves with several releases over the course of 2022 that could each have easily found a place in my top ten. In addition to Fougeriste, Angelos gave us the beautiful chypre Angeliki, his wonderfully luxurious Yloud-Yloud, silky, cooling Salon de The, and the very naughty Vetiveria Animalis, all in the space of 12 months. Likewise, Rogue Perfumery’s Manuel Cross put out several beautifully crafted fragrances this year, including the lovely, smoky rose Rostracto, a first-rate oud, A’Oud Ancienne, and, of course, L’Homme M. LaCroix.

My Perfume House of the Year – artisan or otherwise — is undoubtedly Masque Milano, who signed off their main collection with White Whale, one of the most breathtaking fragrances of their entire, gorgeous line.

  • I will have to give Smoked Jasmine Black Tea a try. I really wanted to like Lapsang Lover, but sadly did not.

  • A very interesting read! I’ve smelled a few of these: I was glad to see Marissa Zappas and Euan McCall make the list! Now I have many more perfumes to add to my smell list. If I win the draw, I would love to try DSH Perfumes Rose/Vachi/Cigarette Fetiche, each of these fragrances sounds really wonderful. I live in WV, USA.

  • Great choices, really sad Im not able to smell any of this! It Sounds lovely tho! Id Like to win Angelos Creations Olfactives Fougeriste im from eu

  • Once again I must commend Ida and Lauryn because choosing a top 10 from such a huge library of 2022 releases is daunting to say the very least. Ida made some very thoughtful selections, including a few I’d love to try (I’m looking at you, Civet de Nuit and Purple Suede). However. I feel as if my tastes are falling more in line with Lauryn this time around. She has picked some I views as holy grail fragrances that sit high on my not-so-short short list of must-buys, such as Gold Spot, I Am Darkness, and L’Homme M LaCroix. Of the 3 prize selections, I would have to go with Angelos Creations Olfactives Fougeriste as I am truly smitten with the only other one I have tried from the house thus far: Eau Du Vertu. I would love to see his take on the classic fougere. I am from North Carolina, USA.

  • I love these takes. Bogue’s 10 and 20 are both excellent and among the finest fragrances I’ve ever smelled. Kaleidoscopic, complex and thoughtful, they remind me of those moments when you finally understand something you’ve been working on for weeks.

I’ll have to check out the Sultan Pascha attar – this may be a good opportunity for me to make an entry. I’ve heard so many good things.

For the giveaway, I’d be most interested in M.oldavite 18:9. Anything mossy gets me and this sounds great. Parallels to Rogue’s Chypre Siam? I’m from Boston, MA.

  • I love this list and added quite a few to my wishlist! If I could win any it would be the Durbano. I’m a huge fan of incense and oud!

  • Thanks for all the work that has gone into this series. So interesting to see how different everyone’s choices are. I would be thrilled to win Angelos Creations Olfactives Fougeriste. Could def use a joyous start to 2023!

  • I love these lists, and I was happy to see that I’ve smelled a few things (I was surprised to find I hadn’t smelled anything on Ermano or Michelyn’s lists!). I love the Jorum Scottish Odyssey collection, especially Rose Highland, and I also adore Marissa Zappas’ Smoked Jasmine Black Tea. At some point I will need to get my hands on a sample of Civet de Nuit. I’d love to try Puente Perfumes Medusa. I’m in New York, USA.

  • Danu Seith-Fyr says:

Again, masterful writing and conclusions by Ida and Lauryn. Bravo the Diva Duo… a though collection of magnificent creations reflecting the years cornucopia of quality releases. I would love to get the chance to discover Puente Perfumes Medusa as I missed out on the sale of the original bottles. Thank you I live in SW France.

  • Danu Seith-Fyr says:

Completely in accord with Masque Milano’s accolade, well deserved, so many truly outstanding creations. Angelos Creations too also deserving his award, a quiet unassuming genius in the world of Perfumery. Thank you again

  • Thanks for the recommendations Ida and Lauryn!

I absolutely agree with Ida that 2022 has seen a trend of sustainability and clean fragrances. I believe the market is there and consumers are becoming more and more concious of what they are buying.

With Ida’s love for Natural Perfumery I guessed correctly that Jorum Studio would make an appearance on this list. And I’m glad it did because I was unaware of Scottish Odyssey and will be getting a sample as soon as possible!

I couldnt agree more with Lauryn about Masque Milano winning your Perfume House of the Year nomination. It is my partner’s brand of choice and she currently adores White Whale. Another incredible release!

I would love to win Olivier Durbano’s M.oldavite18:9.

    Greetings from the UK!

  • I thought that it was a perfect selection that I would highly recommend to my friends or family looking for interesting fragrances. I 100% agree with it. I live in Trzebnica, Poland, EU. I would like to win a 50 ml bottle of M.oldavite18:9.

  • ScentedClown says:

Quite the interesting selection some familiar faces that I’ve tried my self (sultan/angelos/bogue) and some I haven’t yet though I’m glad to to see the selection is quite diverse with no real arching theme in terms the type of composition indicating quite a diverse pallet , will look into sampling some of these as lapsong lover and Medusa sound lovely.

  • BostonScentGuy says:

I’m so happy to see the DSH trio on Ida’s list, as I had a similar reaction to so many of her scents this year–Absinthe Drinkers, Cigarette Fetiche. Also agree with Civet de Nuit–a total and complete blast from the past. Montri is also a favorite of mine! I found it beautifully straddled the lines of eastern/western perfumery…using oud in an intriguing way and kind of like the way animalic notes were used in vintage French scents. Thanks for the generous draw! I would so love to try/own Fougeriste or Medusa. I’m in the US (Colorado).

  • Thank you for another great year-ender list. I’m now really stoked and will have to try out Masque Milano White Whale seeing that it has been picked by 3 of you at Cafleurebon! This in addition to Lauryn picking Masque Milano as her perfume house of the year 🙂 I’ve tried a couple from the house and will have to pick up White Whale soon. If lucky to win, I’d love the DSH Perfumes Rosé/Vachi/Cigarette Fétiche gift set and I’m in USA. Happy New Year everyone 🙂

  • Olivier Durbano M.Oldavite would be the fragrance I would choose to win.
I am looking forward to getting my nose on the Smoked Jasmine Black Tea from the other selections.
    Thank you for the giveaways.

  • So many excellent offerings!! And choices. I too have become entranced by Lapsong Lover, that inky smoky glorious tea!! Also with Angeliki! And would love to smell some more of these. How you all narrow it down is beyond me. The good news – it’s difficult because so much great work is being done!
Thank you for the reviews this year and the give always.
I would love to win Medusa by Puente Perfumes.
    In USA

  • These sound like stunning options! I would love to be entered for Puente Perfumes Medusa. The notes sound stunning. Thank you for the giveaway! From Ct Usa

  • I am thrilled to see Euan McCall featured so prominently on Ida’s list! I loved everything in the Scottish Odyssey collection, and based on her review I will have to check out Hora de la Verdad as well. Lauryn identified a few from Bogue that I’ve been wanting to get my nose on and Masque Milano’s White Whale sounds gorgeous too, as I love ambergris. I’d hard to choose, but if I win I would pick the bottle of Medusa, as I’m really feeling animalic florals right now. I’m in MN, USA. Thanks for the opportunity!

  • I bought Smoked Jasmine Black Tea as a Christmas gift for my best friend and I am impatiently waiting to smell it on her (we’ve both been traveling for the holidays). It was a blind buy so I am thrilled to see it listed here! I am very curious to try Medusa by Puente Perfumes, so that would be my choice if I were lucky enough to win. Thank you! I am in the US.

  • Once again an amazingly detailed list thanks to the CaFleureBon crew (especially Ida and Lauryn this time). The one in this list that I think that I’ll definitely have to check out if I get the chance is Fragments by NVC, which has been mentioned on 3 different lists as of yet and has a variety of versions. I will need to keep my eye out for Masque Milano’s collection as though I haven’t really had any experience in their perfumes, the descriptions of White While and its inspiration from Moby Dick has me intrigued. My personal go-to notes are more citrus and fresh, which Santi Burgas Verdant Delirivm and Angelos Creations Olfactives Fougeriste both caught my eye based on their descriptions. If I were to win, I would love to have a bottle of Angelos Creation.

  • This year has been scarce for me when it comes to discovering new perfume things! I love these articles because they summarize your year’s experience so I get to take notes on what to try next, what’s interesting and unusual enough to be added to my list of “wanna try this soon”.
As for the prize, I feel that Medusa would suit my style. Revisited the article here on the blog and read again about it and it just confirms my opinion that Puente Perfumes Medusa would have a great place in my wardrobe.
    Thank you! (Europe)

  • You guys got to try so many things this year, I envy you lol! Nevertheless, I know it is a pleasure, but it is also a hard work to keep us updated, writing the articles, doing interviews with the perfumers and so on… Thank you for the dedication and I wish you to keep up the good work in the year that will come soon!

I am curious about Olivier Durbano’s creation. I know he was the talk of the town when I seriously got into fragrances, but never had the opportunity to try out his creations.
    I am based in Europe

  • I love to see such diversity in everyone’s choices for best fragrances of 2022. It really hammers home the point that everyone have different palettes when it comes to fragrances. The only two fragrances I have had the pleasure of smelling are Purple Suede and White Whale, both stellar. I can’t wait to see what Masque Milano is going to put out next year, because I agree with Lauryn, they are probably the best perfume house of the year.

The giveaway options are all great, and I find it difficult to pinpoint one I would want more than the other. However, it must be done, and so I choose Angelos Creations Olfactives Fougeriste. Thanks.

    I live in Sweden, Europe.

  • From your list I am the most interested to sample Senyokô Hora de la Verdad, that is a fragrance that sound outstanding and creative. Then also Marissa Zappas Smoked Jasmine Black Tea, because I am really into tea fragrances. Thank you for todays inspiration!

My choice from this draw is M.oldavite18:9 Olivier Durbano (I live in the EU).

  • I just smelled a few of the listed perfumes. Ida’s selection makes me want to explore natural perfumery even more, it’s been such a strong trend lately.
I concur with Lauryn’s praise of Masque Milano White whale, it’ simply beautiful.
I’d like to win Olivier Durbano M.oldavite18:9.
    I’m in eu

  • Lauryn and Ida, great choices for your top ten fragrances of 2022. Some of these I have not heard of before, others I have. I am quite envious of how you’ve been able to smell so many different things throughout the year, allowing yourself to fully envolop yourself in the world of fragrance. Areej Le Doré Civet de Nuit sounds very interesting, and has caught my attention. *Sigh* I guess I’ll have to add it to my sampling list of 2023.

Of the 4 fragrances available in the giveaway, I’d mostly want to win Angelos Creations Olfactives Fougeriste. I need to dip my toes into fougères.

    I reside in Sweden, Europe.

  • Wow, oh wow, such great choices by you both, Lauryn and Ida! I have heard of the majority of these (kudos to Cafleurebon for that), but have not yet went ahead with sampling the ones catching my attention. And now you’ve went and done it again. Marissa Zappas Smoked Jasmine Black Tea sounds *amazing*, and I need to get my hands on that as fast as possible. Thank you for bringing that to my attention, Lauryn! I know how hard it must have been for you to choose only 10 as the best of the year, when most releases have something unique to offer.

I’d like to win the bottle of M.oldavite18:9 by Olivier Durbano. Lauryn’s description of it piqued my interest, to say the least. Thank you for this giveaway!

    Writing from Sweden, EU 🙂

  • I could never imagine tackling such a daunting task myself, so I applaud your courage for doing so, Lauryn and Ida. I too, have noticed that coffee, oud and tea currently dominate the market. I can’t complain, however, as those three notes are some of my favourite. All three of Lauryn, Michelyn and Ermano have awarded White Whale by Masque Milano the grand title of perfume of the year. Sadly, I myself have not yet put my nose to it. Although, it may seem I will have to do so, as to not miss out on the fun. Great job with your choices.

I would like to win M.oldavite18:9 by Olivier Durbano. Thank you.

    Cheerishly writing from the EU.

  • First of all Happy Christmas to the fragrance community.
I have found in both Tops lote of perfumes that I agree could be some of the Best releases of 2022.
In Ida’s selection I find Vediant Delirium, one of my Favourite Green perfumes, Medusa, the first Puente perfumes releases or the new collection of Jorum Studio.
From the Lauryns collection I really LOVE A man, Sarah Baker and Bogue profumo.
Regarding the honorable mentions of Ida and Lauryn I must confess that I have not tried any of these creations. It is interesting that Lauryn name Masque Milano, a great Fragrances House that I sadle could not try yet.
I live in Spain and I would like to win Medusa by puente perfumes since I have bougth a sample and now the perfume is sold out 🙂

  • The list of my desires from the lists of Ida and Lauryn: civet de nuit, lapsang lover, medusa, verdant delirium, white whale, turath. I prefer Yassemi to Fougeriste. The latest from Masque Milano is a wonderful end to this collection. Euan McCall and Eliam Puente are two great artists. I love Hora de la Verdad, my only dream is to own Medusa because “it’s dizzyingly bewitching and erotic”
    I live in France, EU.

  • What? 154 pages fragrances list released in 2022. This is unbelievable!!!! All the mentioned fragrances are now on my wish/want list.
I’m lucky I have 10 ml bottle of Areej Le Dore Civet de Nuit, one of top ten fragrance in my collection. “I Am Darkness” from Azman is my another favorite after Azman Majnoon. The other fragrances mentioned in the article are appealing specifically DSH Cigarette Fetiche, Goldfield & Banks Purple Suede, Jorum Studios Scottish Odyssey Firewater, Parfums Dusita Montri, Rogue Perfumery L’Homme M LaCroix, and Sultan Pasha Turath. Thanks for the genrosity, count me in, please.
If I win my choice is DSH 3 x 5ml Perfumes gift set, by letting my relative USA Shipping Address.
    Love from Pakistan

  • ScentedClown says:

Quite the interesting selection some familiar faces that I’ve tried my self (sultan/angelos/bogue) and some I haven’t yet though I’m glad to to see the selection is quite diverse with no real arching theme in terms the type of composition indicating quite a diverse pallet , will look into sampling some of these as lapsong lover and Medusa sound lovely.

Would be very interested in Medusa I’m located in london in the uk

Sorry forgot to say what I was interested in my intial comment

  • For me, Ida Meister is an “ambassador” of vintage leaning, classical perfumes, either floral, spicy or balsamic and this selection is no different. Since I Love those families of perfumes myself, I know I can’t go wrong if I follow her tastes. On the other hand, Lauryn Beer has such a taste for chypres and greens, evocative fragrances that recall nature, that I feel I learn so much reading from her.
I would love to win either M.oldavite18:9 or Puente Perfumes. They are so different yet speak to me strongly.
    From the EU.

  • Thanks for another awesome article of your favorite picks…..taking notes once again. I was drawn to I Am Darkness with its smoky green incense. If lucky, I’d choose M.oldavite 18:9 or Medusa. From Ida’s honorable mentions, I was interested in Oud in Calvados. Thanks for the opportunity to sniff. Mich USA

  • Lots of rose in Ida’s top ten, and I can see that they’re all so very different. I haven’t even heard of most these perfumees, besides DSH Perfumes and Dusita. I find their creations amazing — I love Hansa Yellow and Erawan. Lauryn’s description made me very curious about Olivier Durbano M.Oldavite.

  • Great list by Ida and Lauryn really need to try DSH as a house that I have got no experience with. Also intrigued by Angelos creations olfactive and Olivier Durbano. If I am lucky to win I would love to win Durbano for a 50 ml bottle of M.oldavite18. Thanks a million from the United Kingdom

  • A beautiful review by Ida and Lauryn. I was really impressed by Euan McCall and Neela Vermiere NVC line. If I am successful I would like to win m. Oldavite 18:9 by Olivier Durbano. Thanks a lot from the United Kingdom

  • So happy to see another perfume from Azman house making the top ten list for 2022, this time in Lauryn’s selection. My two favorite perfumes of this year come from them, and they were both bought online, without testing, after reading your reviews.

I would love to add Olivier Durbano’s M.oldavite18:9 to my collection of wonders. Thank you for your generosity and insightful stories.

    I live in Portugal/ EU.

  • Charna Ethier says:

    Dear Ida and CaFleureBon,
Thank you for naming my Lapsang Lover perfume best natural fragrance 2022. I am honored and appreciative of your support!

  • The only perfume I’ve tried in the lists is Civet de Nuit! I found it very nice, although the price point is a bit hard to swallow and it is oddly comparable to Zoologists Bee. I am a huge fan of civet in general, so I would love to win Medusa!
    Thank you Ida and Lauryn!
    From Canada.

  • What I liked here was how diverse the selections are, especially Ida’s which included Santi Burgas. Great choice. So glad Sarah Baker won an award for Goldspot, I read the article here and bought on luckyscent.
I must get some AZMAN and now I am VERY curious about Zoologist Cow.

Please enter me for DSH and Olivier Durbano Moldevite…

  • As Ida alluded to, the list if perfumes created this year is very long, and I am already having information overload just going through 10 or 20 curated lists. I liked both lists, though I am a little partial to Lauryn’s list because of my penchant for oud perfumes. We’re I to win this draw, I would go for 3x 5ml DSH Perfumes Rosé/Vachi/Cigarette Fétiche – why, because DSH perfumes seem to be orchestras whereas rest of the perfumes out there seem like solo or small band players. From USA.

  • John Michael Jones says:

Wow what a read! I really appreciate all the time & efforts Lauryn & Ida put into this incredible piece. I really have my eye on a few of these but Senyokô Hora de la Verdad stands out due to the reviewer prediction of being the best of 2022 & having her breath taken away! I’VE GOT TO TRY THIS! I live in Boston, Massachusetts

  • 154 pages of perfumes! That is an overwhelming number to consider! Happy to see so many natural and indie perfumers coming out on top! Manuel Cross is one I follow to love seing him get recognition. I havent smelled L Homme M La. Croix so its on my list! I own his Jasmine Antique and would live to own Flora and Fauna.

Glad to see DSH on the list! Her creativity is amazing. Of course if I had the chance would love to try the Rose Trio set. I live in the US

  • I was happy to see
Goldfield and Banks Purple Suede on Ida’s list. I love this Australian Fragrance house. I have many samples and Purple Suede did catch my attention. Lauryn so excited to see Parfums Dusita Montri her 13 Fragrance from this house. I do have this and love it. I’m glad I can say I did smell one of each from your picks.Puente Perfumes Medusa sounds wonderful musky floral earthy thank you for this Chance USA

  • Ida and Lauryn certainly put in a lot of work compiling this list. I trust it was enjoyable. There’s quite a few perfumers I was happy to see represented including Manuel Cross, Angelos Balamis, Euan McCall and Shawn Maher. I was fortunate enough to sample from two of these four. I would love to win either the M.oldavite18:9 or Olfactives Fougeriste. MD, USA.

In TX USA (Forgot to put in last post so reposted, sorry)

  • Ida and Lauryn!!! ❤️❤️❤️ Some of my very very Favorites of the years are on your lists! ❤️ Also, many still to discover! Manny Cross deserves every award! Angelos Balamis is an artist whose work I look forward to experiencing! I love these lists as they help me to prioritize my purchases! I Really Really Trust Ida and Lauryn for their intelligent and cultured understanding and takes on perfume! These will definitely go to the top of my list! I’d be super thrilled to win any bottle! ❤️ USA

  • From these 2 lists, I’m afraid the only perfume I’ve tried was Montri from Dusita. I have to say that this year for me was mostly about hunting and trying Vintage Scents.
Both Lapsang lover by Providence and Masque Milano seem wonderful. A few years back, Providence perfume Drunk on the moon received the Best Natural Perfume award.
After reading about Fougeriste, I’m eager to try Angelos Creations’ scent.
Many thanks for this draw. I live in France.

  • Great list. Glad DSH has multiple mentions (gotta explore the 3 mentions). Providence Lapsang Lover is an amazing lapsang note! I am in California USA

  • There is that White Whale again, the most breathtaking of their line. I think it went under my radar due to the name. I didn’t realize until now there was a bit of violet, which has been my personal note of the year. I’d love to win M.oldivite 18;9. I love a touch of incense in a fragrance. Thanks for the chance and the wrap-up of a great year in fragrance. USA.

  • Thank you Lauryn and Ida for this great experience. As I mentioned before, I feel like I participate at a perfume exposition and I get to know all this great perfumes and it amazes me how I can imagine ( of course far away from reality) how the scents smell.
I am impressed by Adam’s collaboration with Sultan Pasha. Also, Angelos Balamis and Manuel Cross, Dawn Spencer Hurwitz are just a few names that I am familiar with thanks to Cafleurebon ❤️
I would be delighted to win Angelos Creations Olfactives Fougeriste.
    Hugs from Romania

  • I wish I had tried any of these as they all sound amazing. I love green perfumes so would love to win M.oldavite 18:9. I am in the U.K.

  • Ida and Lauryn made amazing lists each everyone.
I love this format, because I can learn more from their taste of every writer and I see they are very interesting.
From the lists I can outstand Goldfield & Banks Purple Suede, Masque Milano White Whale and Azman Perfumes I Am Darkness. They are all amazing fragrances that I had the luck to try and felt deeply in love.
This year also was amazing for natural and artisan perfumers. I love that more and more perfumers are using raw materials and that levels up the game for everyone.
I would love to win Angelos Creations Olfactives Fougeriste.
    USA here

  • What I love the most about these lists is how they open my eyes to new, independent houses with so many now I want to try. I agree that in these dark times, creativity flourishes and I have definitely found comfort in perfume. I would love to be considered for the Olivier Durbano fragrance M.oldavite 18:9 as a soft green incense sounds beautiful and meditative. In Texas, US.

  • Very nice lists! After reading both, I think there is also a big winner : Euan McCall!! Not only his amazing Senyokô Hora de la Verdad made it to the top, but his collection Scottish Odyssey for Jorum Studio won the best collection. I thnk Ida has more work every year regarding natural perfumery: more all natural brands and more “regular” brands that made all natural/botanical ones. She also pick the ones by Neela Vermeire Fragments by NVC as Michelyn and Ermano. They are such a jewels. Lauryn picked my loved Manuel Cross as Artisan Perfumer of the Year: 100% agree : Rostracto and L’Homme M. LaCroix are amazing 2022 additions to his already great collection/menu. My Christmas present has been White Whale, so I agree with the award to Masque Milano. Alori did such a great job! A lot of great perfumes Mr. Alori will create in the next few years. I live in Spain and if I win , I would chose Fougeriste by Angelos Balamis (I have not tried anything from him yet) or M.oldavite 18:9 by Olivier Durbano (The notes remind me of Petite Fumée by Mr. Ducharfour).

  • I very much agree with Lauryn Beer’s ranking, which lists some of my favorite brands: Bogue by Gardoni, Azman and Angelos Creations, all brands that make excellent, high-quality perfumes with a high rate of artistry.
For Ida Meister’s ranking, I am very fascinated by the perfumes of Aaraj Le Dorè, who certainly represents a great nose that uses high-level raw materials.
I would like to participate for Olivier Durbano 50 ml bottle of M.oldavite18:9 and Angelos Creation Fougeriste.

  • I’m loving these reviews! It’s so fun to see how much our fragrance tastes differ. There are a few perfumers and houses that are brand new to me so I will have fun going to each of their websites.

Year after year the DSH catalog grows. I can feel Dawn’s passion for making fragrances. Pissara from Dusita keeps bringing us new and beautiful masterpieces.

Some fragrances houses that I’m interested in are Chatillon Lux, Puente Perfumes and Jorum Studios.

For the giveaway, I will choose Medusa from Puente Perfumes so I can get my 2023 house investigations started. 🙂 Thanks for the giveaway. In the USA.

  • I immensely enjoyed reading short succinct reviews of Ida’s and Lauryn’s top ten fragrances in 2022. Great to see some overlapping with Michelyn’s and Ermano’s lists as Fragments by NVC, which has become more desirable with every review I read.

As Michelyn mentioned despite living close to each other, Ida’s and Lauryn’s picks differ immensely, but there are no big surprises. Most of the top fragrances have already received applause at introductory reviews at Cafleurebon. Establishing them as overall winners gives us – the readers – another gentle push to finally try it. 🙂
So, on my sample list of 2023 are three of Lauryn’s favorite fragrances of 2022: Montri by Parfums Dusita, White Whale by Masque Milano and I Am Darkness by Azman Perfume and all three Fragments by NVC listed as favorites by Ida.
Since Angelos Balamis has along with Mr. Cross received the prestigious title of Artisan Perfumer of the Year, I decided to discover his gems in 2023 finally. So, if I win, I would pick the bottle of Fougeriste. My second choice would be Medusa since I love the story of Mr. Puente venturing into the fragrance world.

Thank you for the generous draw and wonderful round-ups.
    Greeting from Slovenia (EU).

  • 154 pages of new fragrances—that’s an astounding number to assess. Thanks for doing the work for us! (Or at least trying as many as you can and noting trends along the way.)

I’ve tried two of these highlighted fragrances: Vachi, with its warm sandalwood comforts, and the refreshing summer fruits of Agua Fresca. And now I have so many more I’d like to try, with Cigarette Fétiche, Purple Suede, the Scottish Odyssey collection, Lapsang Lover, Senyokô Hora de la Verdad, Fougeriste, I Am Darkness, White Whale, and M.Oldavite being the most intriguing. Thank you for the terrific list! Also, I agree that Manuel Cross has been astoundingly productive this year.

I’m in the midwest, USA. I’d love to win the 50 ml bottle of M.oldavite18:9. Thanks!

  • This post is kind of discovery and inspiration for my to try list for the next year, as there are so many brands I’m not familiar with. Especially I’m intrigued by Gold Spot as I really like perfumes with Oud and chocolate notes and also by M.Oldavite with incense. I can’t wait to try them. I live in France, EU. And really want to win M.Oldavite 18:9

  • I agree with a lot of these fragrances, had a chance to smell couple and the are great. I am very interested in Turath – I need to blind buy it for sure. Dusita is another one on my list – I love this brand! As for the prize I’d really like to win M.oldavite 18:9 it’s really interesting in my opinion and the bottle for me is astonishing! Poland, EU

  • Between NVC’s Purpureum, Masque Milano’s White Whale or Rogue’s L’Homme M. laCroix, the end of 2022 through the eyes of Ida and Lauryn feels almost heartbreaking given all the wonderful fragrances I would have loved to try and couldn’t. There seems to be a tendency towards sweet, dark, enveloping perfumes and I can’t wait to see how it will play out in 2023.
For the draw, I’d love to enter for Puente Perfumes’ Medusa from London (UK)

  • Regis Monkton says:

I appreciated Ida’s and Lauryn’s list for multiple reasons, e.g. reading their list reminded me of a lot of fragrances which I read about on this blog throughout this year. I’d like to win a bottle of Olivier Durbano “M.oldavite18:9”: I’m very interested to try that fragrance. I live in the U.S.A.

  • Another excellently curated end of the year list! So happy to see a number of natural perfumes make it onto the list. Lapsang Lover sounds stunning with the pairing of black tea, rose, and sweets like honey. Civet de Nuit has me nodding in agreement, and although I haven’t tried the three mentioned DSH perfumes, I am familiar with her work and the selections sound beautiful. If selected for this giveaway, I’d love to try the DSH perfumes sample set or Medusa.
    Best wishes from the US!

  • wallygator88 says:

    Thanks for the nice lists!

I would love to win either Olfactives Fougeriste or Puente Perfumes Medusa

    Cheers from WI, USA

  • Very great top tens both of you! There are several perfumes in your lists that also is included in my list, such as Civet de Nuit from Ida’s list and LaCroix from Lauryns. I see that Lauryn listed Fougeriste in her top ten and I would very much like to enter the giveaway for that one, please.

    I am from Sweden.

  • sephrenia300 says:

Wonderful pics Ida and Lauryn! I adore Ida’s selections – she clearly has impeccable taste! Civet de Nuit was an instant love for me and i ordered a full bottle almost immediately after trying it. And Frederico Parfums Blooming Amber is something i just tried a brand I was newly introduced to is the perfect solar floral that is heady and stunning. And the perfumer is the loveliest person!

I am much less familiar with Lauryn’s pics but I appreciate being introduced to such a lovely array of new fragrances – particularly Puente Perfumes Medusa. I love heady, voluptuous and vintage-y perfumes and I particularly love perfumes inspired by historical or mythological figures so this is one i can’t wait to try.

I live in the US. I would be thrilled to win any of these but my choices would be in the following order of preference 1) M.oldavite18:9 2) Angelos Creations Olfactives Fougeriste 3) Puente Perfumes Medusa and 4) DSH Perfumes Rosé/Vachi/Cigarette Fétiche.

  • Michael Prince says:

I loved Ida’s and Lauryn’s top 10 fragrances of 2022. I agree with Lauryn’s choice for artisan perfumers of the year Angelos Balamis and Manuel Cross, both are well deserving and came out with great fragrances this year. Masque Milano was a great choice for perfume house of the year because they continue to put out beautiful releases. Fragments of NVC came out with some outstanding releases this year that were highlighted by Ida along with Goldfield and Banks Purple Suede which I thoroughly enjoyed. I am from the USA. I would like to win Olivier Durbano M.oldavite18:9.
