At this point, dear readers – you’ve already relished the impressions and wonderful photography of Karl Topham, Ermano Picco and Emmanuelle Varron. They have done an expert job of recounting their experiences: the words and images fairly leap off the page. Now it is my turn to corral my thoughts and interpretation of event at Esxence Milano The Art of Excellence 2022.

This was my third time attending Esxence (the first was 10 years ago), and it was the first time I had traveled to such an event with my husband. We had planned months in advance to consolidate a visit to the Netherlands with a brief trip to Paris to visit our youngest – before moving on to a week in Milan to participate in Esxence. We were travel-weary when we arrived, but such an event is capable of reawakening one’s gusto and enthusiasm. When you walk into a venue of this scope adrenaline kicks in, and you are ready to go-go-go!

The Team: Meeting and Greeting at Esxence Milano The Art of Excellence 2022

Ermano and I are old friends; it was a joy to be with one another after three long years. An unanticipated delight occurred when I met other ÇaFleureBon team members with whom I had yet to acquaint myself: Emmanuelle Varron (whom I met the day before we each left Paris for Milan – we attended a tour of the Osmothèque in Versailles together which we’d planned in advance), Karl Topham, Cristian Marianciuc and Alexandre Isaie Helwani-Robert. It may not be essential [sic] to fall head-over-heels with your colleagues – but it surely does not hurt any, either. They proved even nicer than I had imagined, and very collaborative. Our Editor-in-Chief Michelyn Camen was sorely missed, and nearly every booth I visited inquired after her, conveying their love and support.

Challenges at Esxence Milano The Art of Excellence 2022

One of the challenges of such an immense venue is the reality that by the time you may come around to visit – many exhibitors are thoroughly exhausted, have run out of samples or even the new fragrance which they are presenting. Some of the helpers who assist in the booths may have run out of things to say; they may not be well-versed in the fragrances, although they try valiantly. Several exhibitors on the list were not present – likely due to travel/expense complications, the presence of Covid. There were participants who had not been vaccinated, and several who had to decline presentation due to illness (some had traveled a significant distance).

Trends at Esxence Milano The Art of Excellence 2022

This new fougère is spellbinding, as Lauryn Beer’s recent review reveals. It is both pastoral and perfection. I would wear every single drop from a bottle; I would go through it like Ulysses S.Grant took Richmond in the Civil War. In fact, I just purchased a bottle – it was that envoûtant

Naturals and clean reign supreme. There were so many compelling fragrances composed with an abundance of marvelous raw materials, such as those from the French brands Bastille (95%), Le Sourceur (Behave), Unda Prisca from Lithuania, Hiram Green’s Arcadia, Sultan Pasha’s Sacred Scarab for Zoologist, and Santi Burgas’ new Verdant Delirivm. Many lines are aiming to present a clean profile with recyclable packaging, bottling and sustainable olfactory materials.

There’s always oud. Everywhere you look – or breathe. Some are more beautifully blended than others, but the trend is still going strong, and it is not going away. Even in our little B&B, the second you stepped out of the lift it filled the air – day and night.

Be Have Collection new at Esxence Milano The Art of Excellence 2022

One of the most impressive displays was an extensive line of utterly magnificent botanical essences and oils by Stéphane Piquart: Behave. Stéphane’s oils beggared belief. He was incredibly generous with his time; we explored every single fragrance (I returned to the booth he shared with Parfumeurs Du Monde at least four times to smell them). What would you want to sniff? Santal Spicatum – for one – most unusual and exquisite; Ylang Solaire, Jasmin, Fleur D’Oranger, Cypres, and the mind-blowing Blue Ginger. The fir balsam was jammy and delightful. I am ordering them – yes. I am.

Santi Burgas Verdant Delirivm

Verdant Delirivm by Santi Burgas was one of the loveliest green florals I have smelt in a long while: juicy citrus mingles with mint, oregano, Indian jasmine and Bulgarian rose, nestled into a Haitian vetiver base flavored with two vanillas – yet it never waxes cloying. This one is a star.

Unda Prisca perfumer Laimė Kiškūnė

Unda Prisca with blogger Darius Krasauskas, perfumer Laimė Kiškūnė courtesy of Ida Meister & the brand collage by Karl Topham

Big thanks are owed to Lithuanian blogger (and friend!) Darius Krasauskas, who introduced me to the all-natural Unda Prisca line (the name translates as Ancient Wave), created by Lithuanian perfumer Laimė Kiškūnė. Everything in my tiny envelope smelt divine: Lavender, Incense, Jasmin and a deeply mystical perfume named Gardens of Galen!  The generous sample of crème perfume entitled Cyprinium is brilliantly resinous, complex and spicily floral/woody.

It was new to me, but WienerBlut Klubwasser was released in 2019. Let us simply say that there were no samples available – but my husband and I adored it so much that we ordered a bottle (yes, they will deliver to the U.S. from Vienna!). It is James Bond-elegant and no mistake: long lasting, suave, with its beautifully bitter greens of ivy, nettle, galbanum, angelica and a caress of banana leaf. Neroli’s there for pure pleasure, while the base tactfully smolders with smoked wood, guaiac, gurjum balsam and a little lentisque.

Goldfield & Banks Purple Suede

Dimitri Weber of Goldfield & Banks with Ida with picture of Purple Suede collage by Karl Topham

Goldfield & Banks Purple Suede, the brand’s latest launch – proved a delight which incorporates my beloved lavender with a textured raw suede note, a kiss of rose and exquisite woody tones. Deep, elegant and highly nuanced, Purple Suede is a treasure.

Fragrant revelations

Bastille Hors Piste review

Image of Bastille Hors-Piste courtesy of the Brand

Fragrant revelations were too numerous to render justice; these are but some of the myriad impressions. Emmanuelle was spot on about Bastille Parfums! I adored the entire line – and confess to harboring an incredibly soft spot for Hors-Piste (translating as Off Road, or perhaps more accurately ‘off the beaten path’): an audacious olfactory cocktail comprised of tangerine, mandarin, juniper, ginger, mate and pink pepper lounging upon a discreetly woody base.

Just like Emmanuelle, I thoroughly enjoyed exploring all of the Cherigan perfumes. There were no samples available so I sniffed and re-sniffed, with several favorites: Edo Park, Fleurs de Tabac, Iris Coffee, Lovers in Pink and Adhara Oud (yes, oud.). Such a beautifully revitalized line of classic French perfumery!

Gianluca Zin of Venezia 1920

Gianluca Zin & Venezia 1920 by Ida collage by Karl Topham

Venezia 1920, a new brand created by product designer Gianluca Zin and Michele Cardillo – celebrates the innovative spirit of Venice in the ‘20s: home to the Biennale and a true intersection of East-meets-West for centuries. The perfume line consists of five extraits (a flacon of Blanc de Blanc was gifted me – a riotous explosion of the white flowers sequestered in Venice’s giardini segreti). There is also a luxury skin care line as well. Perfumer Roberto Dario has been at work developing new fragrances – and the modules I smelt were simply gorgeous. Thanks to Roberto, Danu Seith-Fyr, Tomoo Inabe Profice and myself were able to meet in tight quarters to review and sample the line. I look forward to further developments.

Chez Molinard: after over 50 years’ affection for Habanita, it was reassuring to experience the reissue, which is very well done indeed. Several fragrances were relatively new and attractive, but it was the revamping of their Nirmala which also impressed me: a beautiful powdery floral ambery fragrance successfully rendered modern for current tastes. Except for the retaining of the original Lalique image for Habanita, all the other flacons were streamlined.

Ida and the team with Le Jardin Retrouve owners Clara Feder and Michel Gutsatz

Le Jardin Retrouvé: Random samples I had smelt in the past did not properly prepare me for how gorgeous these fragrances are. It was nearly impossible to choose a favorite amongst them, but Mousse Arashiyama, Jasmin Marjorelle, Cuir de Russie and Verveine d’Été placed high on my wishlist.

Cristian Cavagna’s Murice Imperiale, the latest of his three tuberoses-to-date. The moderator of Italian fragrance group ADJIUMI is passionate about this indolic bloom, and Murice Imperiale charms with its moist salinity and lovely rhubarb and ginger notes.

Roberta Deiana: resolute perfume writer, cook and bon vivant Roberta is a friend of Ermano. She kindly gave me a copy of her new book, Atlante degli Odori Ritrovati (Atlas of the Rediscovered Aromas) – which I am determined to review soon. Within its pages are interviews which include Cristian Cavagna and our own Ermano.

Friends Old and New

A favorite aspect of Esxence concerns the greeting of dear friends and the making of new ones. Meaningful relationship is crucial to me and being presented with this opportunity was edifying. It is one thing to communicate virtually with a human being, and quite a different story altogether to meet face-to-face. I am not fond of name-dropping – but if there were ever a time to do so, now would be it. How else would you know unless you were present with us? Cherished friends included Neela Vermeire of NVC Parfums, Céline Verleure of Olfactive Studio, Ulrich Lang, François Henin of Jovoy, Meo Fusciuni, Thierry Bernard and Gwenaelle Chauvin of Parfumeurs Du Monde, Rania Jouaneh of Rania J, Roberto Dario, Wim Emiel Janssens of J.F.Schwarzlose Berlin, Barbara Herman of Eris Parfums, Dmitri Weber of Goldfield & Banks, Alessandro Brun of Masque Milano and Milano Fragranze, Hiram Green of Hiram Green Perfumes, Pierre Guillaume, Mark Buxton, Sarah Colton of Bad Girls Perfume, Cristian Cavagna of the Italian fragrance community ADJIUMI, and the charming and enthusiastic perfumer and blogger Tomoo Inabe Profice. Apologies to anyone inadvertently omitted, please! It was most gratifying to spend time with new acquaintances: Anatole Lebreton, Manos Gerakinis, Andreas Wilhelm of Perfume Sucks, Angela Ciampagna, Diletta Tonnato, the charming Michel Gusatz and Clara Feder of Le Jardin Retrouvé, and Stéphane Piquart of Behave. Naomi Goodsir and perfumer Isabelle Doyen were generous with their time, allotting our team a special visit. Several perfumers were exceedingly kind and shared their precious time with me: I am grateful to all these folk and many, many more.

 Generosity of Spirit and Play

It is marvelous to witness perfumers enjoy themselves. I thank everyone who took the time to chat and discuss perfume (and many other things) with me; there were so many. I cherished my time with the team as we dined, drank coffee, strategized and let our hair down together. It is impossible to relate the level of candor and warmth emanating from such folk – or to list every booth which held new surprises and old favorites. Thank you, Milan! I look forward to visiting you again next year!

  • The very interesting information and how beautiful the report is intrigued me. I live in Poland, EU.

Love sacred scarab, the oud, Arcadia, described reality of visiting this type of event, New brands

  • What is intriguing for me in Ida’s description of such an event (and those of others too) is how the internal, felt experience must have been like. We have experience with going to museums and concerts where our auditory and visual senses are stimulated. In Esxence, it’s the olfactory sense and to a limited extent visual sense that is activated. It this unique experience described by Ida and others that fascinates me. Hopefully it’s like an olfactory orchestra, a symphony of smells that one experiences. It’s probably a therapeutic experience too with high quality ingredients playing their part in a giant aromatherapy session. Enjoyed Ida’s description of the event and her meetings with many perfumers and experiencing different perfumes. Incense and oud based perfumes and variations on them catch my fancy. Thanks for these articles and a generous draw. From USA.

  • Sounds like you all had a wonderful reunion and what an incredible sensory overload, in the best possible way, you must have shared! I’m glad to see the continued trend of brands using higher quality natural ingredients and also being concious of their environmental footprint. I’m super excited to try Arcadia and Sacred Scarab as well as look up the other brand new to me brands mentioned in this wonderful write up. Thank you for giving us a taste of your experience it was so fun to read. In US

  • Brad Woolslayer says:

I love sampling new fragrances, and this event allowed so many fascinating small and indie houses to get together in one place to endorse their latest fragrances. Natural fragrances and new spins on fougeres sound like a fun way to enjoy a day out. Meeting online friends for the first time in person that share a common interest in fragrances is always amazing as well. I live in Maryland USA.

  • What a fun time meeting old acquaintances and new faces. It’s a real treat to actually meet the people behind the fragrances, and from their personalities you can see how they translate to the fragrances they create. There was so much information to take in for such a short period of time, but you and the team did a great job relaying your experiences to us readers. Thanks a lot for making us feel a part of the experience, maybe some day I’ll be able to go to a fragrance convention as they look like so much fun!

Thank you Ida and everyone else who is giving us these comprehensive roundups of Esxence. I covered SXSW Music for 8 years in a row and know what it’s like being comprehensive about an event like this. It’s a lot of work! Not It must be so nice to have team members finally seeing one another after this long period of forced separation. Visiting Milan is not half bad, either 😉

I love the friendships and conviviality being showcased here in Ida’s writeup. I’m glad there is still a commitment to natural, clean, and ecofriendly perfumery. I would have loved to try the oils at Stéphane Piquart: Behave. I hope that Goldfield & Banks continue their business for many years to come b/c all of their offerings sound amazing and I want to go back to Australia to be able to try them in a shop. I am not interested in the mystery bag – a kind friend recently made me a bunch of samples that I am still working my way through. Good luck to everyone else!

  • Ida!!! ❤️❤️❤️❤️ I’ve been looking forward to your picks from Esxence! Yay!!! I’m excited to see you pick out so many green notes in new fragrances for admiration! I am a chypre-lover and cherish any new & beautiful green fragrances I can find! ❤️ Clean & natural are fantastic, indeed! Thank you so much for the heartfelt and lovely introductions to many houses I’ve never experienced! They are all going on my “to-try” list! Thank you for the wonderful opportunity to try precious samples!!! ❤️ USA

I was most intrigued by Ida’s description of the Unda Prisca line, in part because of my Lithuanian ancestors and in part because of the tantalizing promise of a “deeply mystical” fragrance called Gardens of Galen. And immediately following, Ida talks about WienerBlut Klubwasser and how she and her hubby ordered a bottle right away.
Murice Imperiale also sounds provocative, with its combination of tuberose, rhubarb, ginger and saline notes. It sounds like something I would put together if I were a perfumer. I am in the US, in North Carolina.

  • AleksCipri says:

Every story I read about Esxence is like a new puzzle pice and I love it. I appre every new brand being mentioned and I just keep adding to my wish list. Ida’s text had a very personal note and I like that she talked habit about hot the event looked like with all it’s ups and downs due to covid, traveling issues and just how hard it is to handle so many people coming to your booth wanting to sample, smell and experience your brand. After reading Ida’s impressions my wish to try out Le Jardin Retrouvé has solidified. This brand sounds amazing. I’m from Illinois, US.

  • Sorohan Adriana says:

I don’t like oud perfumes and of course my passion for them intrigues me because I immediately feel around them when someone uses them and I feel sick I feel like throwing up. I like indolent floral perfumes I like tuberose in combination with other flowers.

  • Such an intriguing collage of highlights and impressions!

I really relished reading about Ida’s personal itinerary and, of course, the multi-faceted report from Esxence Milano The Art of Excellence 2022. I particularly loved to read about interpersonal (re)connections among Cafleurebon team members and perfumers. But the most interesting part of the article is the trends in perfumery – I am happy that oud is still trending. I was especially drawn to the Ida’s description of the new discovery WienerBlut Klubwasser, which I am going to try when I visit Vienna in the upcoming Autumn.
Thanks to Ida for an enjoyable and informative report and a wonderful giveaway.

  • Mary Stephens Mitchell says:

Thank you for detailing your impressions so (typically) thoughtfully! I’m sure it was a whirlwind. Stéphane Piquart’s work intrigues me. I’m in the United States.

  • It was really interesting to hear how the event has changed over the years and what the new trends are. Bodes well for the year to come! I am already loving the sound of Verdant Delirium. I am in the U.K.

  • Wow, what an exciting event, so much so that many samples were gone by this time. But how fun and exciting that must be to see perfumers knowing their scents have gone out into the world, maybe a whole new world for some of them from countries that typically don’t get attention in the west. I think it would be fabulously fun. In maryland.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading all the articles about Esxence, from literally all of them you can breathe the happiness and enthusiasm of being able to meet again in person, to sniff until your nose cannot take it any more, to finally see the people you have just spoken to via social media or email! The size of the event, the number of amazing brands, I would have loved to spot Ida and the others in the middle of an isle, and greet them as if they were old friends! Ida’s article intrigues me especially for the many brands she mentions that I don’t know (very curious about the Vienna-based one!), and let’s not talk about the giveaway: a mistery bag!! How utterly marvelous! I adore surprises, it would be a treat to receive such a gift! Greetings from Milan

  • Definitely the fougere piqued my interest! Great write up. Thank you for the giveaway. I live in USA

Some years ago i had a dream to once visit Esxence or similar exposition, but then cov-id came and we all changed. Now i understand better that such events are for professionals, regular person might wear out in 15 minutes or so. So i praise all such special reportages, introducing readers with the names and visuals, new brands and new releases.
I would not mind to win samples, though. Very good way how to explore this fantastic olfactive field 😉
For me personally the most interesting new releases would be: Neela Vermeire, Anatole Lebreton, Naomi Goodsir.
    Thank you.

  • It’s wonderful to read that in this world of perfumery, such a friendly and warm atmosphere can exist. I can relate to this joy of being able to connect with people through our common passion for perfume. I’m always amazed at how people can be generous with their time, samples and so on (whether they are professionals or just aficionados like us), and it seems that Esxence just embodied this spirit. Now my interest is picked to check out WienerBlut Klubwasser, to understand what made Ida buy a full bottle, while I’m sure she tried so many of other fantastic scents ! I’ve also many times read or listened people talking about Le Jardin Retrouvé, and was considering buying samples but never did. Now I want to at least try the ones Ida listed (especially Jasmin Marjorelle and Cuir de Russie). Same thing for another French branch I overlooked, Bastille, I’m not more eager to give them a try. I was glad to read her opinion about Hiram Green Arcadia. From Hiram Green I tried Arbole and Slow Dive, and from what Ida writes here, Arcadia is as unique and compelling than them ! One more on my ever-lengthening sample list ! Thanks for this serie of Esxence reviews, it was nice to have different points of view of the same event. That’s more for us to discover and enjoy ! I’m in France, EU.

  • This is fine journalism and makes the hobby even more interesting. I hope to go someday! NV, USA.

  • I have not been up to date with the latest releases and this would be a nice opportunity to catch up. Everything sounds really good! Thank you!

  • I really hope to attend Esxence one of these years. Every year I read Ida’s review, and wish I could have been there too. Anyways, thanks for bringing new scents to my attention. I really can’t wait to sample Arcadia, it seems to be getting a lot of attention. Thanks for the draw! In the US.

  • I strongly agree that it is all about raw materials now. It’s great not only because it is “proper” but also because it is enriching to learn to differ the “matière première” while you smell. I’m from France, EU

I love how Milan warmly welcomed Ida and she embraced it fully. It is truly amazing when events like Esxence come alive – there are no limits to the magic happening in terms of new human and fragrant encounters, conversations, experiences. I am grateful for the enthusiasm pouring from Ida’s article, and for giving the most interesting and intriguing brands (old and new) great coverage. I also truly appreciate Ida’s honesty about the challenges faced by exhibitors – that casts somewhat new light on the event and gives it an even more humane feel. Thank you from Dublin, Ireland, EU

  • I would love to attend Esxence Milano, and I think every fragrance enthusiast would too. I love discovering new fragrance, new trends and new brands. The ones that Ida talked about that looks more interesting are Venezia 1920 and Le jardin Retrouvé.

The best part of these meetings will always be getting back together with friends and getting new ones.

  • I loved reading Ida’s recount of Esxence Milano The Art of Excellence. It sounds like she was able to catch up with old friends, which is always nice (especially after three years). I have been curious about Hiram Green Arcadia since its release, but I’m especially intrigued after reading Ida’s comments about it being pastoral and perfect. I am also glad to see naturals being incorporated by many houses. I would have loved to explore Cherigan fragrances. Iris Coffee and Fleurs de Tabac sound especially beautiful.

Pierre Guillaume is one of my favorite perfumers, so I envy Ida’s friendship with such a fantastic perfumer! It sounds like you had a great time, Ida. I would have loved to attend the event and explore Milan. Thank you for recounting your experience for us.

I would love the opportunity to win a mystery bag of samples. Thank you to all the participating brands. I am located in the USA.

  • Thank you for the extensive coverage of Esxence—I’ve enjoyed all the brand profiles, the coverage of interesting fragrances, the photography, and some of the asides about the larger industry. • It is great to get the different perspectives of the cafleurebon editors and contributors about Esxence 2022. This review has highlighted some many brands and perfumers that I have never heard. I guess that is the beauty of events like Esxence that brings this perfume lovers together. Also getting introduced to perfume houses that are focused on creating fragrances that are pushing “natural” perfumery forward. I really appreciate the number of perfumes Ida highlighted in her review.
