Best Fragrances of 2022 (Ermano and Michelyn) + Part 1 Draw

Michelyn Camen’s  and Ermano Picco’s overview of Best Fragrances of 2022 (and a few disappointments)

This year was challenging for so many of us, on many levels. Michelyn was unable to see her colleagues and friend-in-fragrance at Esxence, and missed many fragrances of 2022, simply because she wasn’t there.

For as long as ÇaFleureBon has been giving end of year Best Fragrance awards (2010)(2011), (2012), (2013)(2014), (2015), (2016) (2017), (2018) (2019) (2020) and (2021) we always ask the question, “was this a good year for perfume?”  We assure you despite living in challenging times the Fragrances of 2022 were some of the best in quite a few years. – Ermano Picco, Editor and Michelyn Camen, Editor-in-Chief

Best Fragrances of 2022

Fragrances of 2022 Best Trends: Natural Perfumery as a new niche. 100% natural perfumes and perfumers have been  around for a long time, in recent years with pioneers like Mandy Aftel, nowadays the natural palette has incredibly widened thanks to research. Moreover, Natural Perfumery has finally gathered the interest of a wider audience thanks to more and more brands like Parfumeurs du Monde, Voyages Imaginaires, Hiram Green, Floratropia, ALTRA and others, involving young and more experienced perfumers. So today, with commercial brands offering natural perfumes as well, we can finally tell Natural Perfumery has become a niche on its own and being so young, we can only expect to see wonders in the future. Ermano Picco.

Ermano, this to me isn’t a trend but a new era, when natural perfumery is recognized as olfactory art, after many years of ridicule or outright dismissal from critics, and others in the industry. Here at CaFleureBon we have been championing natural perfumery since our inception; Aftelier Perfumes Honey Blossom won a 2010 best of scent –Michelyn Camen

Perfume as Wellness: Many of the fragrances of 2022 were responses to changing times we live in; perfumers have shifted towards scents that make people feel good about themselves whereas usually perfumes are about attracting others.

American perfumery: American perfumers offer a unique fragrance perspective that is getting worldwide attention. Many are self-taught and come from diverse backgrounds and ethnicities. To quote American Perfumer Anjali Vandemark of Anjali Perfumes “There is a growing wave of experimentation and inclusion today”

Welcome to the Metaverse: Perfumes still remain an in-person experience but the rise of the Metaverse and the response of companies to the concept means that a person, a group of friends, a gathering of individuals from around the world can explore fragrance, ingredients, purpose, sustainability, within their own universe. Dr. Nadeem Crowe of Rook Perfumes, The Scent of the Metaverse: Verse 1 is “first NFT” fragrance ever created.

Best fragrances of 2022 Thomas de Monaco Eau Couer

Thomas de Monaco Eau Couer and Sycomore Parfum collage by Emmanuelle©

Best Fragrance of 2022:

Thomas de Monaco Eau Coeur (Maurus Bachman): In all my years of writing and testing thousands of perfumes, only twice has a fragrance had such a profound effect on me. It was love at first sniff and Eau Coeur captured my heart. I also learned an important lesson. You cannot judge a fragrance by the notes, (as much as your tempted). If I had seen the listed notes Magnolia Oil, Osmanthus absolue, Pink Pepper; Rose Maroc, Virginia Cedar, Oakwood; Tonka Bean absolue, Musk, Ambrox, chances are I would have prejudged, as I am not a fan of rose, ambrox and pink pepper. Instead, Thomas de Monaco and perfumer Maurus Bachman have created a heart stopping beautiful perfume.

Chanel Sycomore Parfum. Perfumer Olivier Polge succeeded at really creating a plush, intense embodiment of the gorgeous original woody floral, extending both the luminous heights of florals and the smoky depths of vetiver. Editor Ermano Picco.

Neela Vermeire courtesy of Neela

Fragrances of 2022 Best Creative Director:

Neela Vermeire, founder and Creative Director of Neela Vermeire Creations and Fragments by NVC. With the new line Fragments by NVC this year she succeeded in launching more accessible and affordable fragrances without compromising with her own vision and style, collaborating with “what began as three unnamed perfumers as well as without forcedly tap into her Indian roots. I can’t wait to see the upcoming next releases. Editor Ermano Picco.

I agree Ermano, which is why Neela is also in my Hall of Fame. This year’s Creative Director award goes to two people. Our own Steven Gavrielatos, aka Redolessence who is our weekly video content creator for his work with Julien Rasquinet and  Dominique Ropion on Navitus Parfums Raised Spirits, a cozy, warming ,boozy feel-good perfume. Influencer Stephanie Ledda’s first fragrance 22 Orris, a fruity upbeat iris with 22 percent pure orris was in collaboration with Firmenich Principal Perfumer Frank Voekl -Michelyn Camen

Best Fragrances of 2022

Best Fragrance you never heard of:
Les Amours du Nord СТЕПЬ #1 (Steppe #1) by NŌSE, a line founded by Russian perfumer Timur Sodolov. Ermano Picco

Samples of small batch Texan Tim Hooks’ new three perfume collection Tempus Vitae arrived unannounced in late November. Tempus Vitae Fete d’Ambre extrait de parfum instantly transported me to a time in the not too distant past when my friend and I were sipping bourbon by a fireplace, as we listened to Christmas songs as the snow fell outside. Well named, it is an ambery winter holiday in a bottle, cozy and comfy with coffee notes. -Michelyn Camen

Best  Fragrances of 2022 Niche House: L’Artisan Parfumeur:

L’Artisan Parfumeur Pamplemousses was one of the first non-designer fragrances I bought in the early 80s; I even met Jean La Porte who founded the house in the tiny shop on Madison Avenue. Over the years I have worn many but with a few exceptions most have lost their edge. This changed in 2022; I was truly impressed by Le Potager Collection of five perfumes using a vegetable note; four created by Quentin Bisch and my favorite by Alexandra Carlin. -Michelyn Camen

Best Fragrances of 2022

Best Fragrances of 2022 Independent House:

Hima-Jomo (which in Tibetan refers to the “Holy mother” Himalaya) was probably the most exciting niche house I discovered this year, embodying the Asian traditions, spirituality and kindness into a line of exquisite fragrances composed by perfumer Delphine Thierry with the best French touch. -Ermano

AZMAN, translated as “hours” or “moments” from Arabic was founded by Husan Baba last year  with “Two minutes after the kiss”, 2022 was  the year that  fulfilled the mission of the brand which was to spotlight real oud  in unusual ways and with unexpected ingredients, commissioning indie perfumers from around the globe. The flacons are now sleek and streamlined and five new AZMAN parfums were added to the collection. Three will be showing up throughout the next few days in our Best Fragrances of 2022 by four of our editors. -MIchelyn Camen

Antonio Alessandria of Antonio Alessandria Parfums

Antonio Alessandria

Best Fragrances of 2022 Artisan Perfumer:

Perfumer Antonio Alessandria released this year Amado Mio, a dance cheek to cheek with rose and tobacco following the rousing music of yummy honey, raspberry, and bran absolute over a bed of dark woods. A must sniff totally unique take on rose- Ermano Picco

Oh Ermano, I am so jealous, I love EVERYTHING Antonio creates.-Michelyn

Euan McCall of Jorum Laboratories and Jorum Studio

Euan McCall

Edinburgh-based artisanal perfumer Euan McCall of Jorum Studio receives my 2022 award. Like Antonio, he creates for other houses, (including AZMAN and Senyokô). His Scottish Odyssey Collection now numbers five and each fragrance explore the olfactive topography and folklore of Scotland. My personal favorite was Healing Berry which is akin to gathering wild berries in Perthshire-Michelyn Camen

Best Fragrances of 2022

Fragrances of 2022 Best Independent Perfume:

Frassai Victoria. It takes courage these days of loud, monolithic, uninspired perfume blockbusters to create such a classy, yet modern symphonic beauty built around the Diva of flowers, tuberose. Bravo! -Ermano Picco.

It is also my best perfume of the year Thomas de Monaco Eau Couer-Michelyn Camen

Best Perfumers of 2022

Aurelien Guichard, Nathalie Feisthauer and Olivier Polge collage by Emmanuelle©

Best 2022 Perfumer:

I have a tie; Aurelien Guichard of MATIERE PREMIERE and Takasago and Nathalie Feisthauer of Labscent

Second year in a row!! Nathalie Feisthauer has long been a favorite perfumer of mine, ever since Eau de Merveilles for Hermes. Her versatility and technical skill shone like the scent star she is with 22 releases (perfectly symmetrical for 2022). Der Duft Privilege, Zoologist Cow and more.

Few perfumers are as connected to raw materials in the way MATIERE PREMIERE and Takasago perfumer Aurelien Guichard is. French Flower was created using the almost lost art of Enfleurage, a technique which uses frames with a glass panel that is covered with vegetal wax. Flowers are carefully layered on this wax that will absorb their olfactive molecules, with layers renewed until the wax is fully ready to be distilled.  Crystal Saffron is one of the best saffron-centric perfumes I have ever smelt with a fresh and crisp texture, rather than the warm and spicy side. -Michelyn Camen

Voyages Imaginaires 100 percent botanical perfume

Best 2022 Natural Perfume House:
Voyages Imaginaires did it again! The latest release L’Eau des Immortels is totally captivating and unfolds the exquisite complexity of immortelle flower as well as extraordinary longevity for a 100% natural perfume. -Ermano Picco and Michelyn Camen

Michael Shrammel for the scent of it

Michael Schrammel of For the Scent of It

Best Discovery: Michael Schrammel of For the Scent of It!

Thank you, Sr. Contributor Michael Devine for spraying it forward. Michael Schrammel is a self-taught artisan, an exceptional talent and another example of an American perfumer who creates fragrances  “for the scent of it.” If you have not sampled his work. I URGE YOU to buy his discovery set NOW!-Michelyn Camen

Tanja Bochnig and Camille Goutal and Isabelle Doyen collage by Emmanuelle©

Best Natural Perfumer 2022:

Isabelle Doyen and Camille Goutal- Ermano Picco

I love Isabelle and Camille of course, but for me I chose a perfumer who has always worked with 100 percent natural ingredients, Tanja Bochnig of April Aromatics. This year’s Lost in Roses appealed to me in every way, as I like my roses fruity, jammy and honeyed. It also brought back  memories of Editor Tama Blough, who passed away January 9, 2014, she loved roses and Tanja’s San Francisco was the last perfume she wore before she passed.

Fragrances of 2022 Best Bottle:

Not only you can smell Dries Van Noten in the air, but you can see his unique style through the 10 amazing flacons of the new Dries Van Noten perfumes line. Simple shapes, bold colorful patterns, and uber-chic details from the caps definitely made our best bottles of 2022. -Editor Ermano Picco and Michelyn Camen

Fragrances of 2022 Worst Bottle: Billie Eilish 2. Since Nikki Minaj didn’t have a fragrance this year, thank you Billie Eilish. The gunmetal robo- metallic nightmare flacon was inspired by the singer’s favorite body parts  and reminds me of the AIs in Westworld, a futuristic Venus de Milo with more than a nod to Gaultier’s Le Male Classique. I saw it, and ran. PS. It may smell great but can’t get past the creepy bottle. -Michelyn Camen

Best Fragrances of 2022

Fragrances of 2022 Best Limited Edition:

Born as a sort of wunderkammer where flowers played a big role, in 2022 Diptyque got back to its roots teaming up with florist Maurice Harris (who came to fame on the show Full Bloom) for the launch of the new Eau Rose. A limited-edition special candle trio celebrated the unusual facets of this sparkling rose: Chamomille, Artichaut, and Rose Such a beautifully displayed and original trio couldn’t be missed, definitely. -Ermano Picco

Pierre Benard of Osmoart speaking at the World Perfumery Conference

I missed it, but we are a media partner for 2023 and can’t wait to see you there. The World Perfumery Congress 2022 was held in Miami June 29th-July 1st. It was my great pleasure to attend with Elise Pearlstine a friend since her first post for ÇaFleureBon on perfume notes over 11 years ago. We spent four days of sniffing and learning. From the opening reception hosted by Quintis Sandalwood to the July 1 awards ceremony for Art and Olfaction 2022, (where I was honored to accept for winner Amber Jobin’s Mayan Chocolate in the Artisan Category). WPC was an amazing olfactory journey but also a time to connect or reconnect with new and old friends-in-fragrance as well as readers!!!.

Best Experimental Scent: Aether Arts Perfume HiveMind and Rook Perfumes The Scent of the Metaverse  Verse 1

This is a new category for 2022.  Multi Art and Olfaction Award Winning artisan perfumer Amber Jobin of Aether Arts Perfume created Hivemind as a reimagining of bees in the distant future, leaving the earth in search of a new home. It’s a sci-fi gourmand, a futuristic scent constructed around honey, metallic spaceship notes and wax. Here I quote Nicoleta verbatim,” Rook Perfumes The Scent of the Metaverse Verse 1 is what a new (new-new not just “new) god from Neil Gaiman’s “American Gods” would smell like. Forget Mr. World, Technical Boy and Media, this is a whole new sentient creature“. -Michelyn Camen

Best (fragrance) Book:

Scent a History of Perfume by Dr. Elise Vernon Pearlstine

Fragrance, botanicals, raw materials, pollinators, and history converge in our Editor and Ethno-Botanist Dr. Elise Vernon Pearlstine’s brilliant new book Scent, A Natural History of Fragrance. Learn about incense, resins, oud, spices, flowers and aromatic herbs and their habitats as well as from their roots in ancient civilizations to modern day. Each chapter of Scent, A Natural History of Fragrance is annotated and the glossary includes hundreds of botanical nomenclature as well as historical writers and artists (Agatha Christie and Salvador Dali, for example).-Michelyn

Sentir le sens by Mathilde Laurent for Nez, a personal thoughtful and engaging narration through the “perfumistic” vision and poetic of Cartier inhouse perfumer that’s a genuine manifesto awakening our olfactory sensibility. Ermano Picco.

Fragrances of 2022 Best Collaboration:

Emmanuelle Dancourt with Ugo Charron

Emmanuelle Dancourt with Ugo Charron  courtesy of Emannuelle

Umema is a collaboration between Ugo Charron (who was co-perfumer for the art and olfaction award winning Grandiflora) and Emmanuelle Dancourt. Emmanuelle Dancourt was born an anosmic, meaning she never had a sense of smell, so the idea of making a personal perfume that she could never smell was through synesthesia and sensorial experiences. With the help of Ugo, she went to the Mane factory tasted ingredients such as orris root and Japanese Dashi as well as explored shapes and texture, roses were velvety pastel pink.  Perfume is such a personal expression of who we are, and although she cannot smell UMEMA,  it gives her self-confidence and she now feels closer to the fragrant world that so many of us take for granted.-Michelyn Camen

Astier de Villatte creative duo teamed up with renowned fragrance.  anthropologist and author Annick Le Guérer and Master Perfumer Dominique Ropion for the unbelievable contemporary rendition of the three most legendary perfumes of the ancient world: Le Dieu Bleu (Kyphy), Artaban (the Royal Perfume of ancient romans) and Les Nuits (reconstructing a fragrance used by French novelist George Sand). The result is exceptional from an olfactory, visually and literary point of view.-Ermano

Nathalie Feisthauer  and Yvon Jaqueline USA Managing Director of Parfums de Marly and Initio Parfums Prives

Best Fragrances of 2022 Hardest Working Person in Perfume:

Nathalie Feisthauer authored 22 brand new perfumes in 2022, all of them were exquisitely crafted, from the more experimental Norwegian brand Kalit trio to the unexpectedly joyous Cow for Zoologist, passing by the French coquetry of Ambre Blanc for Maison Rebatchi and others. Plus I had the pleasure to meet her in Milan last June at Esxence, and I saw she attended various other events. So, as a one-woman band, she definitely deserves the Hardest Working Person in Perfume award. -Ermano Picco

I agree Ermano, you will find quite a few of Nathalie’s perfumes in our team’s Best Perfumes of 2022 list and one of my best perfumers 2022. I am adding  Yvon Jaqueline, who is the USA Managing Director of Parfums de Marly and Initio Parfums Prives. During 2022, he conducted over 100 masterclasses at retailers or events. -Michelyn Camen

Best Home Fragrance 2022:

Diptyque Artichaut candle -Ermano

Providence Perfume Co. by Charna Ethier Neroli Morning, Celadon, and Night Flower all -natural candles: It’s really ridiculously difficult to make all natural candles!   Charna succeeded. She wanted the candle line to be really fragrant with both cold and hot scent throw—super hard to do with natural essences. Getting back to the idea of fragrance as wellness, whenever I feel a little down or stressed, I burn Neroli Morning, which is uplifting and calming.

Best Fragrances of 2022 Best perfume you want to drink or eat:

Aftelier Perfumes Boheme Confection: Mandy Aftel’s first gourmand all-natural perfume is good enough to eat without giving you a toothache.

Best Neo-Vintage:
Jacques Fath Vetiver Gris got my attention as a beautiful update on of the flawless 1950s style à la Cary Grant. I wasn’t surprised at all to discover later that it came as a spontaneous proposal from perfumer Jean-Christophe Heraut to creative director Rania Naim as a vetiver in the style of Jacques Fath.

Roque Perfumery L’Homme M. LaCroix: Manuel Cross’s all-natural, botanical leather was just released and is a nod to leather and chypre of the 80s, but still modern and original.

Florian Gallo of Firmench

Rising Star 2022:

Scouting talents and rising stars of the perfumery of tomorrow is always a pleasure. In 2018 ,young perfumer Florian Gallo got my attention winning the Prix international du jeune parfumeur-créateur from the Societé Française de Parfumeurs with a beautiful composition around tobacco. As Firmenich immediately hired him, I was looking forward to his creations. This year he released Capsule d’émotions, a row of beautiful creations for French jeweler Mauboussin of which Caviar Attraction explores the savory creaminess of caviar. Keep an eye on him!- Ermano Picco

Ermano, you have the nose to be a scent scout. That’s is how I found Jerome di Marino was through your Rising Star of 2020. I am also watching Ugo Charron of Mane-Michelyn Camen

Sarah McCartney (left)  and Saskia Wilson Brown (right)

MVP (Most Valuable Perfume Person) 2022: Hall Of Fame: Saskia Wilson Brown and Sarah McCartney

In a multibillion-dollar industry that’s often driven by the numbers– both in dollars and products sold- fragrance can lose many of the qualities we value most, its ability to stir memories and emotions– with just a dab of scent.  When the emphasis is put on ad campaigns, flankers and celebrity spokespeople something vital is lost… perfume as artistic expression, both of my MVPS  encourage education, creativity, diversity and excellence in fragrance.-Michelyn Camen

Since 2014, Saskia Wilson-Brown, the founder and Executive Director of The Institute of Art and Olfaction has done so much for mentoring and fostering independent and artisan perfumes through the Art and Olfaction awards, But she does much more including events, and initiatives that promote scent culture at the Institute and during the pandemic online through various programs.

Sarah McCartney of 4160 Tuesdays is fiercely independent. Sarah’s message is to understand your customer, to create with passion and to be “pirates” in the mold of British sailors who ran away from the navy rather than being kicked out. Her challenge to all perfumers was to visit a few department store perfume counters to understand how facts from creators may get lost on their way to consumers and fall into the “Valley of Dead Truths”. Recently she wrote something on Instagram that angered a fragrance company who had her account shut down. There is not shutting down Sarah, she is a force of nature and a pirate!

Note: Sarah worked with me in collaboration on 2107 Red Queen, 2018 White Queen,2020 Dark Queen and is currently working on a 13th anniversary 2023  “Queen.”-Michelyn Camen

Neela Vermiere hall of fame Best Fragrances of 2022

Best Fragrances of 2022 Hall of Fame: Neela Vermeire of Neela Vermeire Creations

If the fragrance world didn’t have a person like Neela, we would have to invent her, a more kind, loving, artistic and dedicated woman you will never meet. Neela Vermeire introduced her line of exquisite fragrances in 2011, Neela Vermeire has a special place in our hearts. CaFleureBon wrote about the collection in 2011 (no not 2012 as other sites state). CaFleureBon also featured Neela Vermeire in the Creative Directors in Perfumery Series in 2013.  Neela  also is a recipient of the Art and Olfaction Award for Ashoka in 2014.  I have said numerous times that Mohur Extrait , “is religious experience” and ranks in my top five perfumes of all time. Her new  Fragments by NVC  perfumes are  stunning (as you will read tomorrow and Tuesday). Here is the story behind them. She began the perfumes during the pandemic. She refers to her Fragments By NVC trio as “figments of our fragrant imagination”. A new bottle was created and was accompanied by gorgeous art by illustrator Massimo AlfaiolNeela, you add such grace, elegance  and artistic sensibility to our scented lives. • This article was everything! A Joy to read. I dont have access to niche perfumes in Croatia, so I can’t really pick my fave, and New designer releases didn’t really impress me, at least the ones i was able to try ( Shalimar Tonka or New Chanel weren’t avaliable). I tried for the first time some older scents that are absolutely yummy, Pure Poison was the 2022 scent for me. I want to try Cow by Zoologist, Cow is my fave animal and this perfume is on top od my wish list.
Id Like to win Lost in Roses and Amando Mio, thank you, im from eu

  • Can’t wait for the rest of the article! My biggest discovery of 2022 was Maison Violet Paris. A rather unknown house, but with some very interesting, vintage-like offerings. I encourage everyone to give them a go if they ever have the chance!
I am in Europe and the prize I would go for is Lost in Roses. Thank you!

  • Hello!
Really long story. What I could say is that best fragrance in 2022 is Thomas de Monaco. I didn’t catch which one is the worst as I only paid attention to what is the best.
I am from USA and is interested in a giveaway of Thomas Monacco. Thank you

  • Kudos to you both for such a detailed and thoughtful overview. This is exactly why I love Cafleurebon. What I thought was that the Billie Eilish bottle was hideous and that if I don’t win I must buy Thomas de Monaco Eau Couer, voyages Imaginaire EAUX immortel and the sample set from For the scent of it! From Ermano I want to check out Amado mio and Frassai Victoria.
    I live in the USA

  • As a noob to Cafleurbon who only discovered the site/community this year, I was blown away by this article. You guys really put your hearts into it and left no stone unturned – making sure to highlight the best in every imaginable facet of the world of fragrance. Good show. Was thrilled to see Mike from For the Scent of It featured. I am a huge fan of his work and love him to pieces. He loves his customers and will just chat fragrance for hours in Instagram. I also loved hearing about (and being reminded of) some releases that I missed this year but sound really exciting – like Zoologist Cow or Azman Two Minutes After the Kiss. As a rose lover, Antonio Allessandria Amado Mio sounds like a dream to me; but I am equally intrigued by Thomas de Monaco Eau Couer. I am in the USA.

  • Really interesting and enjoyable read thanks to Ermano and Michelyn, and a bunch of new perfume houses and fragrances I need to check out. First time seeing Billie Ellish’s perfume and can definitely see a how it could be considered one of the worst bottles but personally I think it look pretty good, but more surprised to find out Elon musk was making a perfume too. I haven’t really sampled many perfumes, but based on what was said about Chanel Sycomore Parfum and Thomas de Monaco , will for sure need to sample those. It would be amazing to get either bottles of Lost n roses or Thomas de Monaco, but I’m leaning more towards Thomas de Monaco from the scent profile. From TX USA.

  • A beautiful piece by Michelyn and Ermano so many houses that I have got no experience with. If I am lucky to win I would love April Aromatics Lost n Roses. Thanks a million from the UK

  • A, wonderful description by Michelyn and Ermano. I was really impressed with Neela Vermiere a house that I have got to explore further. If I am successful would like to win April Aromatics Lost in Roses. Thanks a lot from the UK

  • I thought that it was a great list. It was also very helpful for me. I live in Trzebnica, Poland, EU. It would be amazing to win 30 ml of Lost n Roses or a 50 ml bottle of Amado Mio.

  • Its was a great pleasure reading this! So many useful information. I was most impressed by Best Experimental Scent since I constantly feel that we live in the future 🙂 and also the category Perfume as Wellness because it marks this important perspective shift in finding validation inside rather than outside.
If I am lucky to win I would love April Aromatics Lost n Roses or Amado Mio.
    Hugs from Romania

  • Merry Christmas to all! As always a LOVE the selection that Mychelin and Ermano have done. I must confess that some of this perfumes were unlnown for me but now I want to try It allí!! I agree a los with The selection os Tania Boschnig and her new roses perfume as BEST natural perfumery and I LOVE to see here also Eauan McCal and his House Jorum studio. Also Neela Vermeire is a brand that I really LOVE.
On the other hand I miss some brands like Le Frag, Lunio perfumes or Mallo parfums that for me were some of the BEST launches of 2022.
Thank you very much for this great article!

What an interesting and thorough article! Thanks for putting it together. I loved sycomore this year so I’m glad it was highlighted. I also love diptyque candles so good to see them get some shine. I’d love to try the dries van noten after reading this

  • I love the year end articles! I don’t get to try many new fragrances so your team always points me in a fragrant direction!

I would love to try Amado Mio. I live in the United states. Thanks for the drawing.

  • It’s hard to agree with every choice. I’ve tested some of the picks, including the new Sycamore. I’m not sure if I’d call it the best release, but it’s a fantastic take on the original. Thanks for the giveaway! I love everything fragrance, including this site. New Jersey, USA

  • It’s always a pleasure to read what you at Cafleurebon think is the best X and best Y of the year. Truth be told, I think that both Michelyn and Ermano were spot on with their choices. I can’t wait to see what’s to come in the next part. I suppose the giveaway is for all fragrances that I am eligible for; And thus, I’d like to win the bottle of Antonio Alessandria Amado Mio or April Aromatics Lost n Roses. I’m trying to get into rose centered fragrances, and these two sound awesome.

    I live in Sweden/EU.

  • Oh boy, what a fantastic year for the fragrance world. This year surely many marvelous fragrances got to see the light. I loved that there is a new trend for natural fragrances and that more and more many perfumers use natural and raw ingredients. That surely level up the game.
I discovered many fragrances and perfumers thanks to you, so I wanted to thank you so much for sharing such amazing reviews for us. I love your section of American Perfumers, please continue doing it.
I hope I win Thomas de Monaco Eau Couer.
    USA here.

  • This is a great list. I think the fragrance I am most excited about is Navitus Parfums Raised Spirits. I trust Steven a lot, and I love the notes that he selected for it. I really think him and the others behind it did a great job with the packaging and marketing. Thanks from Houston Texas

  • You always hit the nail on the head with your choices for this. There’s always something new that I’ve never heard of before that you highlight, and I appreciate that. I, too, have noticed the trend of natural perfumery becoming more and more popular, and that is a trend I hope doesn’t fade away come next year. If I were lucky enough to win I’d like to win the bottle of April Aromatics Lost n Roses or Antonio Alessandria Amado Mio. Thank you for hosting this giveaway, and have a happy new year!

I reside in Sweden, EU 🙂

  • What a comprehensive and inspiring list! Thank you for sharing your favorites. Elise Pearlstine’s book is on my birthday wishlist as well as the Azman fragrances, Hima-Jomo collection, and Providence Perfumes candles. I was sad to miss Anatole Lebreton’s Brioche, but it was sold out by the time I tried to purchase it blindly! I was pleased to see Michael Schrammel as a new discovery – Michael is very talented and personable. I am curious about Antonio Alessandria’s Amado Mio so I would love to win a bottle of that.

  • I had no idea of the death of Rosendu Mateu, such a loss for the world of fragrance, R.I.P. The rest of the article was not as sad, and it was interesting as well as informative. Some of the fragrance houses featured I have not heard of before, so now I have some new fragrances on my to-try list. I would like to win Lost in Roses by April Aromatics as well as Amado Mio by Antonio Alessandria. Thank you for hosting this giveaway.

Wonderful to see Sarah McCartney of 4160 Tuesdays featured, plus Euan McColl of Jorum Studio flying the flag for Scotland So many new fragrances to seek out in 2023!

  • I am happy to see April Aromatics represented here and in your giveaway! Their perfume Pink Woods is what got me into perfumery 🙂 I am very intreguied by the bottles of Dries Van Noten’s line and this has inspired me to check out their fragrances.

I would like to win lost in roses! I am in the USA. Thank you 🙂

  • Read and reread your fabulous informative article. Thank you for your thoughts…..taking notes and adding to my wishlist. As a fan of Meo Fusciuni, Encore du Temps caught my eye. If lucky, I’d choose Amado Mio, Eau Couer or Lost in Roses. All sound fantastic. Mich USA

  • My favorite articles of the year. Such a fantastic recap. Was the ugliest bottle ever more apparent? I hadn’t even heard of Uncut Gem……needing more facets, I chuckled at that one. I may blind buy the Shalimar flanker, it just keeps piping up everywhere. I didn’t do a single blind buy this year, it’s time. Loved Sarah’s challenge to perfumers. Most dept store fragrances are so uninspiring. She’s a feisty one. I’d love to win Lost in Roses. Looking forward to more of my favorite reads. Thanks and Happy New Years. Blessings of health, WARMTH, prosperity, love and good smells to all. USA.

  • Lorie McMillin says:

Wonderful article!! Your year end reviews are always so fun!! Really intrigued by Thomas de Monaco and would love to win! I’m already over at Indigo filling my cart with samples! I’m in the US. Thank you!

  • I applaud Michelyn and Ermano for the comprehensive review of the scents of 2022. It was such a delight to read it.
I am happy that the perfumer of my beloved French house – Materie Premiere- got the prestigious title of the best perfumer.
Also, the bottles from Dries Van Noten received their prize justifiably (IMHO :).
The article has reminded me to finally try the house of Azman.
Thank you for sharing your thoughts.
I would be more than blessed to win Grazie Mille to Antonio Alessandria.

    Greetings from Slovenia (EU).

  • I love reading these best- of fragrance articles. Thank you for putting this together. I will say though, that I thought billie eilishes bottle was creepy like you said, but in a good way. I also really enjoyed reading each of your takes on certain nominations, it’s very interesting to see where tou are in agreement and where you differ. Thank you for the give away, I would like to win Lost n Roses and Amando Mio. From the EU.

  • BostonScentGuy says:

I loved the Hall of Fame call outs for Neela Vermeire, whose original collection really gripped me as well! So glad to see the way she’s expanded her reach in recent years! I also fell hard for Sycomore parfum and found it a lovely, silky, orris-inflected version of the EDP that still retained some of the smokiness of vetiver. If fact, it made me yearn for an extrait of La Pausa with its similarly orris-vetiver tones balanced in a totally different way. I’m excited to hopefully try Millesime Tonka very soon. Thanks so much for the generous draw! I’d love to win any of the scents, particularly Eau Coeur and Amado Mio. I’m in the US (Colorado).

  • Wow, that’s quite a comprehensive article and it appears to cover most everything fragrance related. I even got a good laugh at the Burnt Hair non fragrance – I guess that’s Elon again testing to see how far he can push and still get traction :). This was quite an interesting read. I’d chose Thomas de Monaco Eau Couer if I was lucky to win and I’m in USA. Happy Holidays everyone

  • Thank you for your great article, so many unknown perfumes to me! Can’t wait for reading part 2. As a rose lover it would be amazing for me to win one of those wonderful roses, Antonio’s Amado mio (what a name!) or Lost in roses. Thanks for the draw. I’m in Rome, Italy.

  • Wow! Quite a lot of work went into this list!
Looking forward to trying some of the perfumes from it as I didn’t have much chance to try much in the last couple of years.

  • Eager to read the rest of the article! I am in the USA and would like to go for Amando Mio or Eau Couer, thank you!

  • Loved this descriptive article – so many lovely perfumes, and, alas, only one nose !! Ermano is right about not judging a perfume by its notes – yours truly has been guilty of that – so many perfumes reviewed on Cafleurebon contain similar notes that one may think one knows what they may smell like. This is also why honest, detailed reviews, as on Cafleurebon, are useful, as one cannot, and should not, judge a perfume by its notes. In this vein, I also like the worst award category so one doesn’t waste tons of money on over marketed and over hyped products. Steven’s video reviews (congratulations Steven!!) Are also helpful in knowing hype from genuinely good products. I haven’t tried many perfumes listed here, but have experience with some listed brands in general. Congratulations also to Elise for her book award – I am enjoying reading it very much – it has a lot of substance, and technical details and references if one wants to dig deeper, but it’s accessible to mortals.

So congratulations to everyone who won (sorry Musk for burnt hair – I reckon it’s not very musky). Thanks to Michelyn and staff at Cafleurebon, and to the wonderful olfactory artists out there. Thanks for the generous draws too. Happy Holidays and a Happy 2023!! I am from the USA.

  • Look forward to this end of year best of 2022. Some Fragrance i did sample. I do have a bottle of frustration which is a wonderful gourmand. So many others I do need to explore. Can’t wait for part 2. I’m a big Rose fan Lost in Roses sounds wonderful. Thank you for this Chance USA

  • I love these reviews and lists. it reminds me of what I stillneed to seek out. I am excited to see Thomas de Monaco mentioned. I hust purchased Raw Gold. Now I need to get me nose on Eau Coeur. With your recommendations would love to have a bottle of Eau Coeur. I live in the us

  • Great end of year review and recap. I always look forward to these to remind me of fragrances I meant to bookmark to sample and to see the different categories up for grabs. My favorite find from 2022 was FM Synthetic Jungle. I love the 1970s vibe. I would be happy to win the Thomas de Monaco Eau Couer, Lost in Roses or Amado Mio. MD, USA.

  • What a list! I liked your observations about trends for this year, in particular your thoughts about American perfumery; it’s the area of this hobby I have the most experience with and I love the diversity and experimentation happening in that space. I don’t think I’ve tried any of the fragances mentioned here except Michael Schrammel’s line (recommended!), but Thomas de Monaco Eau Coeur, and the Jorum Studio Scottish Odyssey Collection all caught my attention. Also, I’m glad you added a Best Experimental Scent to this list; this is where some of the most interesting perfumery is happening. Thanks for all the highlights.

    I’m in the midwest, USA.

  • What an interesting article! While there were names I didn’t recognize, there were some I did: I’ve learned a lot about the perfume world this past year! It’s interesting to see where editors overlap in their choices. I’d love to try Thomas Monaco Eau Coer or April Aromatics Lost in Roses. I’m in the US.

  • This year was not very rich in new fragrance discoveries for me. I did take some notes from this article for future things I would like to discover and the main house is Neela Vermeire’s.
Please count me in for Lost in Roses. Really don’t have much experience with indie/natural perfumes. Thanks!
    Europe

  • There are lot of fragrances I had not heard of before. I agree that Uncut Gem has been a little disappointment, given how much the hype was, as it was quite a personal release from Roucel. Elon Musk’s fragrance was for the idiots. I would not even pay a single cent for it. Like the review says, Shalimar Millesime has been loved by almost everyone who has smelled it.

    My choices are
    Antonio AlessandriaAmado Mio
    Thomas de Monaco Eau Couer

  • I’m so happy to see For The Scent of It!!! I’ve been fascinated by his work since Stone Roses and that Forbidden Fig?!! Also completely agree about the Eilish bottle, almost cannibal like – creepy. Adore Neela Vermeille! And a couple on here I just have to try still. Especially the Lost in Roses and Amado Mio.
    In California USA

  • I am so happy to see one of Zara x Jo Malone collaboration scents here in the list, because that was a biggest discovery for me last year – very affordable masterpieces in minimalist style, but so wearable and a lot of compliments!
Then also my discovery was Quentin Bisch, but I will describe him in another section, because as you said: there will be many draws (thank you for that!) ;p

My choice is Lost in Roses April Aromatics (I live in the EU)

  • Lovely choices and many perfumes I’m not familiar with. Now I have a year of testing the best and avoiding the worst…
Both Lost in Roses and Amado mio sound interesting, so any would be simply amazing to have.
    Hugs from Croatia , EU

  • Thanks Michelyn and Ermano for your work (over 2022 and the years) on compiling such a great year in review. Much more than a list, I am sure reading each year´s article is a way of understanding how the perfume world works and evolve. As you write, Natural or Botanical Perfumery is not a trend anymore but it is here to stay and be part of the perfume world. I am so thrilled Neela Vermeire is the most passionate creative director of the year: she is a special woman, like a renaissance one. Regarding Thomas de Monaco Eau Coeur, you say something that resonate in me : we cannot judge a fragrance by the notes, even we are tempted and we do it ( I work in specialty coffee and I wrongly do it too with the notes of coffee). I am happy Manuel Cross did it and win the neo vintage category with L’Homme M. LaCroix, I love all his creations. I am in Spain, and I would like to win Amando Mio of Antonio Alessandria.

  • Oh my, soooo many new perfume houses, so many beautiful and tempting descriptions… Makes me want to try all of them. Especially the natural perfumes as I’m a big big fan of all natural and it makes me happy to see natural perfumery is recognized as olfactory art. Finally! 🙂 I’m also happy Nathalie Feisthauer was named the Hardest Working Person in Perfume!
I won’t comment on the worst perfumes, but thank you for naming Billie Eilish 2 the worst bottle as it honestly is…. LOL
As for what I’d like to win, any of these meant for EU sounds darn good! 🙂
As you can tell, I’m from EU. 🙂
Marry Christmas and a happy New Year!

  • I am quite new to the world of fragrance, and to this blog in particular, but based on these picks I can tell that you know what you are talking about. Some of these I have had the pleasure of smelling before, such as Shalimar Millesime Tonka and Thomas de Monaco Eau Couer, both lovely fragrances. I would like to win the bottle of Lost in Roses by April Aromatics. That sounds lovely.

    I live in Sweden, EU.

  • Once again, I am amazed at how many you both chose. I know how much work goes into these year-end posts, and I appreciate that you both take the time to do these. I also appreciate that you are supplied with samples of these fragrances to share your thoughts with us. Thanks to the suppliers that make these posts possible. Also, Thanks to those who graciously supply products for the remarkable draws. I would love the Eau Couer. I am in the USA .

  • I’ve honestly read the article twice and taken several notes. So much to learn, to try, to experience. Thank you both for your insight and for always giving me something to dream about!

I’d love to win Lost in Roses (my fav flower) and Amando Mio (the bottle is a piece of art), thank you, greetings from Portugal/EU.

  • So much new information! I like that 2022 was a prolific year, so great to discover new perfumes. I’d like to win Amado Mio or Lost n Roses. I am in the Eu

  • Thank you CaFleureBon for choosing Providence Perfume Co.’s new trio of scented candles for your best home fragrance 2022 award! We are grateful for your support Michelyn.

  • Thanks to you both for such a detailed and very informative overview. This is exactly why I love Cafleurebon.
I love FM and so sorry that Uncut Gem did not live up to expectations. I am waiting for test it.
I would like to win Thomas de Monaco Eau Couer and Amando Mio. Thanks.

  • Michelyn & Ermano! ❤️❤️❤️❤️ I’m floored by the amount of work, dedication and love that has gone into this post (and the posts to come over the next few days)! ❤️❤️ We are so lucky, as perfume fanatics, to have this Amazing resource!!! Without everyone at ÇaFleureBon, I’m sure I wouldn’t have discovered most of my favorite & beloved perfumes!!! ❤️❤️❤️
A Huge shout-out & Cheers for your MVP Award Winners!!! Saskia Wilson-Brown is truly Amazing! She is working tirelessly and humbly to bring access and knowledge to perfumery. I’ve taken classes at the IAO and can’t recommend them highly enough! Anyone who loves perfume, is curious about perfume history, composition, culture, appreciation, looking to become an indie perfumer (or hire one for that matter) need only look to the IAO. It’s a Remarkable place!!! ❤️❤️ In a similar way, Sarah McCartney offers perfume-making insights (Real Knowledge about materials, formulations, etc.) through her Patreon classes. Two of the most intelligent, talented, and ethical people in perfumery!!! ❤️❤️❤️❤️
As someone else said, “this article is Everything!” ❤️

  • I am lucky I have Thomas de Monaco fragrances in a perfume shop really close to my house – I was not paying much attention to this brand so far (also, lets be honest, due to the pricing aspect), but probably I will change my attitude and test it throughtly.
And for the next fragrance you singled out (Victoria by Frassai) – as soon as I saw it on your list, I immediately ordered a few mililiters. I am super curious of this one because Blondine by this brand is in my top 10 perfumes ever.
Thanks for your explorations. It is always super informative for me and allows me to navigate the world of perfumes more efficiently.
I am from Poland (EU) and I would like to win Lost in Roses or Amado Mio.

  • Wow, a fantastic wrap-up of this year! I see many of my personal favorites here as well. I had a chance to meet Neela Vermeire this year, and she is not only creative but also a beautiful person. I am a huge fan of Antonio Alessandria, his fragrances are something else! I really really want to try his new creation as well.
And Eau Coeur! Oh, this one is amazing. I could bath in it!
I definitely need to try the others that made it into this article. Love your tastes!
    I live in Lithuania, EU.

  • Danu Seith-Fyr says:

Dear Michelyn and Ermano, a deeply interesting read, such a veritable banquet with dishes pleasant and unpleasant to get through. Well done for your attention to detail and though analysis. Superb job. I would be truly thrilled to own a bottle of Antonio Alessandro’s Amado Mio. Thank you. I already own a bottle of the exquisite Lost in Roses from dear Tanja. I live in France.

  • I wonder if Isabelle Doyen managed to do better than Sables? Thomas de Monaco is a brand that I am discovering! White Whale and Vetiver gris intrigue me, I find the cooperation between Ugo Charron and Emmanuelle Dancourt incredible, I admire what Aurelien Guichard is doing with Matiere Premiere (growing his own flowers and using traditional techniques), Lost in rose, Amado Mio and Eau coeur have a rose theme, which would be perfect for Valentine’s Day.
    I live in France, EU

  • This article identified so many exciting trends and releases! I was so happy to read about the trend of naturals in perfumery, since I tend to gravitate towards scents that have more natural ingredients. I was also glad to see so many great perfumers recognized, especially Euan McCall. I loved the whole Jorum Scottish Odyssey collection! If I’m lucky enough to win, I would choose the bottle of Eau Couer. I’m in MN, USA.

  • Fantastic article, kudos to Michelyn and Ermano of , who made it possible

“Note: Sarah worked with me in collaboration on 2107 Red Queen, 2018 White Queen,2020 Dark Queen and is currently working on a 13th anniversary 2023 “Queen.”-Michelyn Camen”
One of the most, if not the most exciting parts of the whole article. Sarah is just great , I hope not just the new 2023 Queen , but her other fragrances will be back for reviews on Cafleurebon .

“Since I wear perfume for myself.”

    Thumbs up

As usual I’ll share my thoughts on the trends, awards and fragrances in the article I’m personally interested in

Fragrances of 2022 Best Trends: Natural Perfumery as a new niche
Natural perfumery is something I appreciate, but 99/100 times i can’t wear,my skin is really dry,and with very few exceptions such fragrances do not last on me for more than 30min.
    Perfume as Wellness
    It’s a personal thing I believe,fragrance I find relaxing,for someone else could be aggravating.
    American perfumery
Huge trend with mass potential. Unlike years back, American brands are now available in all premium European boutiques , and websites.
    Best Fragrance of 2022
Eau de Coeur is really good, magnolia , pink pepper, rose with blast of honey in the base ,at least to me .
Sycomore in all its interpretations during the years I’m not quite found of
Fragrances of 2022 Best Creative Director
Fragments by NVC is awesome, to me is more Western oriented, like Ermano i also can’t wait for the next releases.

I own 7 L’Artisan Parfumeur fragrances, but if I have to be honest I don’t like the uber vegetal Le Potager line

Best Fragrances of 2022 Hardest Working Person in Perfume:
“Nathalie Feisthauer authored 22 brand” Wow
    Most Disappointing Perfume 2022:
Uncut Gem is not bad…for a designer fragrance, and way overpriced for something coming out of premium brand like Frédéric Malle
    Best Fragrances of 2022 Flanker:
Milleslim Tonka is like a granddaughter of Shalimar , way more modern than Shalimar
    Best Fragrance Name 2022:
Frustration is great fragrance, with bold name

  • WOW!!!! The article is just locking a sea in a jar. I am impressed with the information and description about perfumes for the year 2022.
Thanks for the generosity, if not expired & timely comment, count me in please for the draw. My choice is April Aromatics Lost n Roses.
    Pakistan

  • I am in Europe and I would love to win Lost in Roses. I do not have much experience with natural perfumes and I feel that this is a piece of perfumery world that has lots of surprises and lots of things to explore. I am also a big fan of roses so that is a bonus I suppose.
    Many thanks!

  • What a list! I love so many of the perfumes and brands mentioned and I also added a ton of samples to my to-try list. Personally, I think Aurélien Guichard goes down as my favorite perfumer of the year. I purchased two fragrances from Matiere Premiere in 2022, Radical Rose and Encens Suave. Parisian Musc is next on the purchase list. I credit Aurelien with changing my mind about rose fragrances. After smelling Radical Rose, I was hooked.

Regarding the giveaway, it would be a joy to win any of them but Amado Mio peaks my interest most. I have smelled a few fragrances from Antonio Alessandria and have been extremely impressed. Gattopardo and Dies Aurorae are two favorites. I live in Indiana.

  • I just love these end of year “best and worst” selections. I find there’s a lot to learn from them, but there is also room for some giggles and light heartedness. Especially the “worst bottle” section had me giggling, while best name, perfume you most want to eat or drink etc are all super inspirational.
I also wanna quote a phrase from this article: “perfumers have shifted towards scents that make people feel good about themselves whereas usually perfumes are about attracting others”. So true, this is 2020-2022 in perfumery for me, still as resonant as ever.
I would love to win Amadio mio or Lost in roses. Rose is the queen of flowers and flowers are (traditionally), the queen of frags, so what better note to start the new year with?
    Writing from the EU.

  • Big fan of Marly and Initio and have met Yvan Jacqueline at ScentXplore. Interesting choice and I like it. Also fan of Sarah McCartney. Loved this in MVP
Sarah’s message is to understand your customer, to create with passion and to be “pirates” in the mold of British sailors who ran away from the navy rather than being kicked out. Her challenge to all perfumers was to visit a few department store perfume counters to understand how facts from creators may get lost on their way to consumers and fall into the “Valley of Dead Truths. Cool. Also love Masque Milano. I would like to win the Antonio Alessandrio Amando Mio

  • Forgot to say it was very classy to a acknowlege Rosendo Mateu and I wish more stores in US carried Neela Vermeire
    Happy New Year

  • A wonderful comprehensive inspiring list! Thank you for your detailed reviews! It’s always joyful to read. Thomas de Monaco Eau Court sounds just WOW and I would love to win a bottle of that or April Aromatics Lost in Roses- it sounds beautiful and I adore all natural. Thanks so much for this gorgeous giveaway!

  • I really enjoyed reading this article about the best fragrances of 2022. I have not tried Thomas de Monaco Eau Coeur, but it must be quite stunning based on Ermano’s comments I am also not a big fan of pink pepper, so I had already prejudged the fragrance as something I might just find so-so. However, I am very intrigued by the composition and would love to try it now.

I have been keeping up with Tempus Vitae since their inception but have yet to try their fragrances. Fete d’Ambre sounds very cozy so I must try this one soon.

L’Artisan is one of my favorite houses; they have a plethora of amazing offerings. I am not surprised to see them on this list.

Amado Mio by Antonio Alessandria sounds absolutely stunning. I love rose, tobacco, honey, and bran so this sounds right up my alley.

Voyages Imaginaires has some beautiful fragrances and I love that they are all-natural. I have not tried their newest release starring immortelle, but it sounds like a must-try from the house.

I have to agree about Dries Van Noten having some of the best bottles of the year. Soie Malaquais was love at first sniff for me and I still need to acquire a bottle. I find the bottle just as stunning as the perfume and it’s definitely my favorite from the line. I also agree with Michelyn that the Billie Eilish bottle is one of the worst; I very much dislike it. I don’t mind the fragrance but the bottle is not very aesthetically appealing.

It’s nice to see Anatole Lebreton Brioche included as a favorite limited-edition fragrance. I rarely blind-buy fragrances, but as soon as Brioche was available for pre-order I ordered a bottle. Every note was right up my alley; I am a huge fan of wheat and hay.

Scent: A Natural History of Fragrance sounds like a great read. This is a book I will have to check out.

Ever since I learned of Aftelier’s newest release, Boheme Confection, I knew I needed to try it. I have yet to order my sample but it sounds like a delicious gourmand fragrance. I do appreciate the comments that it’s not cloying or overly sweet.

I agree with you, Michelyn, that frustration was an appropriate emotion for 2022. ELDO Frustration is such a cozy and comforting fragrance that came out during a year it was much needed.

I am so glad to see Sarah McCartney listed as one of the MVPs. She is one of my favorite perfumers; her fragrances are some of my favorites! I can’t wait to try Queen; I have no doubt it will be great.

Thank you, Michelyn and Ermano, for such a detailed list and reviews of the best fragrances of 2022! I would love the opportunity to win any of the three fragrances, but if I had to pick just one, it would probably be Antonio Alessandria Amado Mio. Thank you to Tanja Bochnig, Ann Bouterse, and Antonio Alessandria for the generous giveaways. I am located in the USA.

  • Wow , what a read !
The aspects of Fragrances of 2022 drawings my attention are :

Friends and family, good music, coffee, rum , positive emotions all are part of the festive sensation coming from Raised Spirits. Steven is the guy
Best Fragrance you never heard of, all from TSVGA Parfums , American Indie brand few people know about
Independent House , AZMAN . Husen Khan lived in different parts of the world, and its multicultural background gave him a different perspective towards fragrances, and life. All AZMAN fragrances are complex , different and exquisite. I’m thinking about Cordoba , when I think about AZMAN
Artisan Perfumer , Amado Mio by Antonio Alessandria Parfums
Antonio fragrances do feel nostalgic and lively at thesametime, like suitcases filled with memories. Gattopardo I own
Best 2022 Perfumer I guess hardest choice
Best Natural Perfume House Voyages Imaginaires, well deserved
Best Fragrance Event i need to visit Esxence one day
Best Bang for the Buck Theodoros Kalotinis fragrances, period !!!
Best Fragrances of 2022 Flanker:Milleslim Tonka I’ll gladly wear
Best Fragrance Name 2022 ,Frustration is such a daring name
Best Buzz , again Theodoros Kalotinis fragrances, again period. The guy is changing the fragrance game with quality and prices.
MVP (Most Valuable Perfume Person) 2022: Hall Of Fame: Saskia Wilson Brown and Sarah McCartney
    “Sarah….. is currently working on a 13th anniversary 2023 “Queen.”-Michelyn Camen”
Nice , 4160 Tuesdays is a house I stumbled across unintentionally, but I’m glad I did. Eau My Soul smell amazing and positive attention is there each and every time.
    RIP Risendo Mateu
Michelyn and I are both jealous, I love Gattopardo, and would like to win Amado Mio
I’ll repeat myself, but what a read, and exciting giveaway, USA
    Regards

  • Thank You for this wonderful and detailed review.
I totally agree with Michelyn about Aurelien Guichard‘s work – he is a true master perfumer and creates masterpieces, I was impressed by Crystal Saffron‘s minimalism and brightness at the same time, and French Flower also makes me smile every time I try this. In general, this year Matiere Premiere became one of my favorite brands. Etat Libre d‘Orange Frustration grabbed my attention for as well – next year I promise to discover more of this brand.

Speaking about the worst bottle, Billie Eilish 2 is really unattractive – even if the fragrance is not bad, the bottle looks unpleasant and arrogant. In perfumery we search for art and emotions, the mystery and beauty is inside the juice, outside is just a shell. But oh well, this is all marketing tricks. They don’t work on us. 🙂

I liked that Ermano mentoned Diptyque‘s Eau Rose as well – simple yet beautiful. Also, this year Natalie Feisthauer worked really hard, I had a chance to try some of her creations – it was a wonderful experience. But I slightly disagree with Ermano‘s opinion on Frederic Malle’s Uncut Gem – the final result of the fragrance on the skin depends individually, on some people it smells bright and impressive, even a bit edgy.

I would love to win April Aromatics Lost in Roses, it should be a beautiful, feminine and fresh perfume for upcoming spring.

    Lithuania, Europe

  • Beyond particular trends, it feels like 2022 has been a year of revolt against hypermodernity. Some phenomena mentioned by Michelyn and Ermano such as the first Metaverse fragrance, or Elon Musk’s push for perfume virality, would have grown to larger significance in 2021. However, this year has seen a post-covid unleashing of creativity in many areas -movies, music, perfumery- and gimmicks are relegated to a secondary position in order to better appreciate the artistry of fragrance houses.
Very happy to see some of my personal favorites of the year in this list, such as Shalimar Millesime Tonka, Zoologist Cow, and some Diptyque representation! As well as Uncut Gem, which felt like an unusually pale scent for what FM has us accustomed to.
I’d love to enter the draw for Amado Mio (from Spain, EU). Thanks to Ca Fleure Bon I’ve been able to discover many great scents and brands throughout this year and this feels like the perfect opportunity to learn more about Antonio Alessandria’s perfumes. Plus, it doesn’t hurt that the art deco bottle is so gorgeous!

  • Thank you all for these extremely detailed and thoughtful lists. Somehow I missed the Burned Hair event. Ugh. Happy to see Saskia Wilson-Brown on your MVP list, have had the joy of attending a couple of IAO events, excited to get back to them! I’d be thrilled to try the Thomas De Monaco Eau Coeur, in the US

  • Regis Monkton says:

I appreciate this review/article. It helps me to have a good understanding of this year in regards to perfumery. I’m interested to see what perfumer Florian Gallo’s work will be like. I appreciated hearing about all of the different types of fragrances, i.e. designers, niche, independent/artisan, experimental, etc. I’d like to be entered to win: 50 ml of Thomas de Monaco Eau Couer. I live in the U.S.A.

  • I had a plan to go to the cinema, and watch the new Avatar movie, but when I saw how many splendid articles are available for me to read, I decided to skip the movie, and spend my next 3 hours on Cafleurebon 🙂

Before I start analyzing step by step the gorgeous work from Michelyn and Ermano, I’d like to say that the name of the photographer , who worked on Armani Code Parfum is
Damon Baker , and not Bakera. I know him personally.

As a whole what impresses me in the most from Michelyn and Ermano picks

American perfumery is on the rise , unlike their European colleagues, American perfumers more often think outside of the box. I suggest you all the Pineward Perfumes
Best Fragrance of 2022 I do prefer Coromandel, but Sycamore is also a special fragrance

Thomas De Monaco Eau Coeur i haven’t smelled

Best Creative Director, when I think of Neela Vermeire , one of the most famous quotes in storytelling comes to mind
“Work for a cause, not for applause. Live life to express, not to impress. Don’t strive to make your presence noticed, just make your absence felt.” I discovered the brand because of last year celebration giveaway, and ordered the sample set. Special fragrances and I respect Neela Vermeire calculated decision , not to look for investors, so she can keep control of the brand, admirable! Unfortunately the new Fragments by NVC perfumes i don’t know yet

Raised Spirits from Steven and Navitus turned back time to my mid 20s , when I was drinking Eggnog Latte, heavily spiked with a few extra dark rum shots.

Best Fragrance you never heard of , I don’t know both, I’d recommend Christmas Wine from Pineward Perfumes

Independent House , AZMAN . All the attention AZMAN fragrances do get is justified, no wonder i had to wait for weeks to get the sample set, it was out of stock

Artisan Perfumer , Amado Mio by Antonio Alessandria Parfums sounds spectacular. For now I know 3
-Gattopardo , whiskey, resins and woods
    -Fleurs et Flammes, pleasing floral
-Fara , refreshing, and relaxing fragrance, perfect for the summer.
I also own fragrance created by Antonio Alessandria for a different brand , Rudis from Nobile 1942 .

Best 2022 Perfumer Aurélien Guichard, Nathalie Feisthauer and Olivier Polge , what can I say …

Best Natural Perfume House Voyages Imaginaires , natural masterpiece with…extraordinary longevity?

Best Fragrance Event I’ve been to Esxence once, I’ll have to visit again in near future

Best Bang for the Buck , no Zara for me . The best bang for the buck fragrance are from a new Greek perfumer called Theodoros Kalotinis . I think MaxAroma do carry the house in US.

Most Disappointing Perfume 2022 Frédéric Malle Uncut Gem was a flop , nothing more to say.

Best Fragrances of 2022 Flanker , Milleslim Tonka is either great, or it’s overhyped, because it’s out of stock everywhere, for weeks now.

Best Fragrance Name 2022 , I love the name – Frustration

Best Buzz , I don’t know about Elon Musk fragrance, to me the best buzz is the upcoming Cherry Smoke from Tom Ford. People are paying crazy prices on Ebay for early, given to friends and family bottles.

MVP (Most Valuable Perfume Person) 2022: Hall Of Fame: Saskia Wilson Brown and Sarah McCartney
“is currently working on a 13th anniversary 2023 “Queen.”
    Surprise , Surprise
I wonder what 2023 Queen would be? Dark and mysterious one , or maybe more uplifting?
From the 4160 brand i do own 30ml bottles of Eau My Soul and Silk, Lace & Chocolate , and I’m so curious aout the new Queen

    RIP to Risendo Mateu

I’d love to win Antonio Alessandria Parfums Amado Mio
Thank you for the time , and effort, and for the opportunity
    USA

  • Wonderful article! I really enjoyed how Michelyn described Thomas de Monaco Eau Coeur as a fragrance that he definitely would have judge by the listed notes and not tried and therefore realized how wonderful it was. I have a bad habit of judging fragrances by the notes and I definitely would have judged Eau Coeur but now I’m looing forward to trying it. I thought Michelyn’s choice of Azman as the Best Independent Fragrance House was inspired and I wholeheartedly agree! I am a big fan of their spotlight on real oud with both “Two minutes after the kiss” and “Majnoon” being fantastic.

I would be thrilled to win any of these but my first choice would be Thomas de Monaco Eau Coeur, my 2nd choice would be Amado Mio, and my 3rd choice would be Lost n Roses.

  • You worked for days, or even weeks on the article , aren’t you? Good job both of you. Some of the Best areas I’m fascinated by
☆ Fragrances of 2022 Best Trends: Natural Perfumery as a new niche
I often, if not all the time relate fragrances to some sort of food, but “all natural” in the kitchen and in fragrances is not the same thing. All Chefs should limit, if not exclude every artificial sweeteners, processed pre-made …. (i just don’t want to be rude) , but in fragrances very, I mean very few people can actually tell if some ingredients are natural,or not. Smellwise close to 90% of people can’t tell the difference between vanilla , vanillin and ethylvanilin . I’ll keep an eye on the trend
☆ American perfumery , massive fan of Kerosene, Gallagher Fragrances, Imaginary Authors, Amouroud, Rogue Perfumery
    ☆ Best Fragrance of 2022
Thomas De Monaco Eau Coeur I was expecting to be good, but heart stopping?
Chanel fragrances do not work for me .
    ☆ Best Creative Director
°I’m not sure what’s my favorite Neela Vermeire Creations fragrance is Bombay Bling, Mohur Extrait or Trayee , but I’m sure i need to get my hands on Nemus, Thyina and especially Purpureum
°Raised Spirits from Navitus , with the help of Redolessence = Kahlua Rum and Chocolate Poke Cake, with caramel glazing
☆ Best Fragrance you never heard of
°Les Amours du Nord СТЕПЬ #1
    °Tempus Vitae Fete d’Ambre
No matter how many samples you order, there will always be some new , and unknown to try.
Such fragrance i think is Piotr Czarnecki Bluebijou , maybe even Michelyn don’t know about it
☆ Best Fragrances of 2022 Niche House: L’Artisan Parfumeur:
I respectfully disagree, i think the best Niche House of 2022 should be either Atelier Materi, AZMAN, Rogue Perfumery or Scents of Wood
    ☆ Independent House , AZMAN .
AZMAN Majnoon smells like Zwetschgendatschi , the famous German Plum Cake, with a big cup of 100% Arabica made espresso. I so need to get my hands on the whole range of fragrances.
☆ Artisan Perfumer , Amado Mio by Antonio Alessandria Parfums
Nuit Rouge I’ve sampled , smells like Rhubarb Grapefruit Custard Cake
Nuit Rouge bottle, and Amado Mio sample is what I need right now
☆ Best 2022 Perfumer Aurélien Guichard or Nathalie Feisthauer or Olivier Polge , to be expected
☆ Best Natural Perfume House Voyages Imaginaires , if I see the name of the brand more in other contributors pick , I’ll order samples
☆ Best Fragrance Event ,I envy all who went to the exhibition, I was so busy at the bakery back then…
☆ Best Bang for the Buck … Zara do have some decent fragrances , but I’d rather buy a fragrance from Essential Parfums, Kierin NYC
☆ Most Disappointing Perfume 2022 I’d add the whole L’Artisan Parfumeur Le Potager line to my personal disappointments . I adore Noir Exquis and Traversee du Bosphore , my kitchen and garden, but I don’t want to smell like a squashed pea , just sliced beetroot or fennel. I can make you Fennel Risotto with Duck Fillets , or Rigatoni with Fennel and Anchovies, just say it , and I’ll do it . The artisanal approach is present, and appreciated, but despite being a Chef , when I’m on a walk with my girlfriend for example, I definitely don’t want to smell like just sliced Fennel – Cédrat Céruse
☆ Best Fragrances of 2022 Flanker Milleslim Tonka is not easy to find, it’s sold everywhere
    ☆ Best Fragrance Name 2022
Only Etat Libre D’Orange could name a fragrance “Frustration” LOL
☆ Best Buzz , I’m not worried or excited about the Elon Musk fragrance , but I am for Milleslim Tonka, all AZMAN fragrances, Thomas De Monaco Eau Coeur , Etat Libre D’Orange Frustration, Antonio Alessandria Parfums Amado Mio, Voyages Imaginaries L’Eau des Immortels, Navitus Parfums Raised Spirits, Neela Vermeire Purpureum and also Tonka Cola from Mancera.
☆ MVP (Most Valuable Perfume Person) 2022: Hall Of Fame: Saskia Wilson Brown and Sarah McCartney
    13th anniversary 2023 Queen.

Finally , i was wondering what happened with 4160Tuesdays reviews on Cafleurebon. I was introduced to 4160Tuesdays at Perfumology. White Queen I had a chance to smell there, buying something else. Nir Guy strongly suggested I had to check it out. Beautiful hazelnut creamy and resinous gourmand . Other than White Queen , i also bought Silk, Lace & Chocolate there.
☆ It’s sad such famous perfumer past away, RIP Risendo Mateu

I’ll be happy to win Antonio Alessandria Parfums Amado Mio
Appreciate Michelyn and Ermano fine work, and the giveaway campaign
    USA

  • This is my favorite time of the year when reading Cafleurebon. Between your many editors, you’ve tested so many things I can only dream about. I enjoyed Emano and Michelyn’s picks, and I especially enjoy the news about the various perfumers! I am very intrigued to try the Thomas de Monaco Couer as it seems to be creating a lot of positive feedback! I look forward to the upcoming articles in this vein! Thank you! USA

  • Michelyn, let me add, I always look forward to the worst bottle. I am sorry, but if it is in a hideous bottle, I cannot enjoy the perfume. I guess if it was a stunning perfume, I would have to decant it into something else!

  • Monumental work guys, thank you

-Fragrances of 2022 Best Trends: Natural Perfumery as a new niche
Natural Perfumery is no longer alone in the corner, and reaches wider audience
-American perfumery perspective i like a lot , especially if it comes from House of Matriarch, Gallagher Fragrances or Rogue Perfumery
    -Best Fragrance of 2022
Thomas De Monaco Eau Coeur is one on most hyped fragrances, Chanel Sycamore is a staple for me.
    -Best Creative Director
Creativity, design are traits of Neela Vermeire herself. Big plus for her success , was having full financial, and creative control of the brand . She may not had the experience, but Neela learned the hard , and in my opinion the right way.
Raised Spirits from Navitus , with the help of Redolessence
Raised Spirits is party like, festive, slightly boozy with tobacco, I like the way it develops , and Steven is workaholic too.
-Best Fragrance you never heard of
Les Amours du Nord СТЕПЬ #1 , Tempus Vitae Fete d’Ambre , I could add Somens Arena
-Best Fragrances of 2022 Niche House: L’Artisan Parfumeur:
I don’t know the 2022 releases, but the futuristic approach is present
-Independent House , AZMAN , Husen Khan is a guy on a mission
-Artisan Perfumer , Amado Mio by Antonio Alessandria Parfums
I not only tried Antonio Alessandria fragrances , but I have the best one . It’s called Noir Obscure.
I’d like to compare it to Amado Mio
-Best 2022 Perfumer Aurélien Guichard + Nathalie Feisthauer + Olivier Polge . One superstar, and two future stars.
-Best Natural Perfume House Voyages Imaginaires , artistic natural fragrance, and surprisingly with good performance
    -Best Natural Perfumer 2022:
Isabelle Doyen and Camille Goutal- Ermano Picco
    +
    Tanja Bochnig of April Aromatics
    3 successful workaholics
    -Fragrances of 2022 Best Bottle:

Not only you can smell Dries Van Noten in the air, but you can see his unique style through the 10 amazing flacons of the new Dries Van Noten perfumes line. Simple shapes, bold colorful patterns, and uber-chic details from the caps definitely made our best bottles of 2022. -Editor Ermano Picco and Michelyn Camen

Dries Van Noten i met a couple of times on fashion shows, third or fourth generational of tailor , with lots of prestigious awards in the industry, if I’m not mistaken he won Designer of the Year award around 10 years ago.
Unfortunately he sold majority of the brand to Puig a few years ago, and he don’t have much of a control over the brand now , if at all , they basically semi- kicked him out of his own company!!!
It’s the same situation like Tom Ford now , and Jo Malone. The bottles look good, but it’s actually Puig selling fragrances , and not Dries Van Noten himself , they are just using the name.
He should’ve learned from the likes of Neela Vermeire!!!

-Fragrances of 2022 Worst Bottle: Billie Eilish 2
The bottle is tacky , but the fragrance is actually good. It’s kind of similar to Santal 33
    -Best Fragrance Event Esxence….soon
-Best Bang for the Buck , there are better options than Zara
-Best Fragrances of 2022 Hardest Working Person in Perfume:
Nathalie Feisthaue and Yvon Jaqueline , congrats to the fellow workaholics
    -Most Disappointing Perfume 2022
To me Zoologist Cow , Sacred Scarab is significantly better, I even bought 10ml travel spray .
-Best Fragrances of 2022 Flanker Milleslim Tonka is like a unicorn, people are talking about it , but I can’t find it
    -Best Fragrance Name 2022
I’d never had the courage to name a fragrance “Frustration”
    -Best Buzz
Milleslim Tonka , Mancera Tonka Cola , all Zaharoff fragrances
    – MVP (Most Valuable Perfume Person) 2022: Hall Of Fame: Sarah McCartney
So the new Queen is on the way ? I like White Queen, and Black Velvet Cafe, the second i just bought for the 3th time . First time for $145 , last week for $180. Considering the market, more than fair price.
    Rosendo Mateu RIP
Antonio Alessandria Parfums Amado Mio would be great
Thank you Michelyn , Ermano and all the brands

  • If I have to summarize the amount of pleasing to the eyes, and mind fragrance information
Fragrances of 2022 Best Trends: Natural Perfumery as a new niche.
Natural Perfumery was not appreciated by most ,is because of the bad performance most of the time. Now houses like Voyages Imaginaires found a way to make naturals more potent
    American perfumery Rogue Perfumery, easy
    Best Fragrance of 2022:
    Dior 2022 releases > Chanel 2022
Fragrances of 2022 Best Creative Director:
Neela is one of a kind person , LOVE Bombay Bling, and Mohur, and I’m pumped for Fragments by NVC
Best Fragrances of 2022 Niche House: L’Artisan Parfumeur:
It’s up to you, if it was me , AZMAN or Zaharoff
Best Fragrances of 2022 Independent House:
Rusty Vibes is a dream come true if I’m not in a mood, same thing I’m expecting from Amado Mio
    Best 2022 Perfumer:

MVP (Most Valuable Perfume Person) 2022: Hall Of Fame: Saskia Wilson Brown and Sarah McCartney
We all wait for the 23′ Queen
If lucky I’d like to win Antonio Alessandria Parfums Amado Mio

  • Phillip_Barkley says:

    Greetings everyone
If I have to guess it’s your end of the year thing , when Cafleurebon critics from all over the world do recapitulate their fragrance best experiences for the whole year.
    1. Fragrances of 2022 Best Trends: Natural Perfumery as a new niche.
Out of the 5 natural brands ,I have experience with Voyages Imaginaries they are available at NoseParis .
    2. Perfume as Wellness:
Perfumes could be relaxing if you like the scent, if you don’t, let’s say like the perfume of the person you have business meeting with, it could have the opposite effect.
    3. American perfumery:
Not just 22′ , but last few years American perfumery is not just stepping forward, but running. Lately new American brands was able to find their way to Jovoy Paris, the Mecca of perfumery , Scents of Wood for example.
    4. Welcome to the Metaverse:
I’m old-school person, and I’m not interested in Metaverse or NFT’s
    5. Best Fragrance of 2022:
Thomas De Monaco I’ve not seen in Paris, Chanel is Chanel
    6. Fragrances of 2022 Best Creative Director
I don’t know both brands Navitus and Neela Vermeire Creations, I’ll look for points of sale in Paris
    7. Best Fragrance you never heard of:Les Amours du Nord СТЕПЬ #1 (Steppe #1) by NŌSE
    Tempus Vitae Fete d’Ambre
    I’ve never heard of both
    8. Best Fragrances of 2022 Niche House: L’Artisan Parfumeur:
L’Artisan Parfumeur is one of the oldest niche brands as far as I know, but I don’t like the direction they are heading. Some would disagree, but I think vegetables belong in my fridge, and table . Personally I don’t want to smell like beetroot juice.
    9. Best Fragrances of 2022 Independent House:
Azman fragrances are one of the best new discoveries i made
    10. Best Fragrances of 2022 Artisan Perfumer:
I’ve never seen Antonio Alessandria fragrances in Paris, I hope there are points of sale because Amado Mio sounds awesome, woods with honey and raspberries.
    11. Best 2022 Perfumer:
Aurélien Guichard for me.Matiere Premiere perfumes are really good, Oud Seven and Encens Suave , i just don’t like tuberose
    12 . Best 2022 Natural Perfume House:
Voyages Imaginaires are available at NoseParis. Other than L’Eau des Immortels Azahar and L’échappée Sauvage are also nice
    13. Best Natural Perfumer 2022:
    Isabelle Doyen and Camille Goutal
    No wonder
    14. Best Bang for your Buck
Beer and pizza could be quite expensive, just joking, I don’t know Zara Ocean 3
    15. Most Disappointing Perfume 2022:
Frédéric Malle Uncut Gem is just not worth it, 50ml bottle costs €215… NO.
I can’t remember the name, but also the beetroot juice perfume from L’Artisan Parfumeur according to my taste is very much a disappointment.
    16. Best Fragrances of 2022 Flanker:
Shalimar Millesime Tonka I bought instantly the second I smelled it
    17. Best Fragrance Name 2022:
No other brand than ELDO could come up with such a name , Frustration Lolx2
    18. Best Buzz of 2022:
Francis Kukdjian is working on a new perfume in his role as Perfume Creation Director for Parfums Dior-Michelyn Camen-
Shalimar Millesime Tonka I think, the whole Scents of Wood catalog, and of course the quoted info
    19. MVP (Most Valuable Perfume Person) 2022: Hall Of Fame: Saskia Wilson Brown and Sarah McCartney
Both brands i have not heard or seen in Paris.
Because of the scent profile of woods with honey and raspberries , I think I’d enjoy Amado Mio from Antonio Alessandria the most
Thank you, American living in Paris France

  • Tempus Vitae Fete d’Ambre sounds like something incredible! Now I wonder if I will ever have an opportunity to smell it as it’s a small batch. Totally support the choice of Hima Jomo! It’s beautiful natural fragrances that need to be known. And I discovered Antonio Alessandria perfumes only this year. I really love Dies Aurorae as it’s one of the most original incenses, would love to try Amado mio! I think after reading all the best perfumes of this year L’Eau des Immortels is my most desirable now. Totally agree that bottles from Dries Van Noten are among the most beautiful. I hope to meet you at Esxence next year! I haven’t heard about Umema before, thank you! Last Shalimar is absolutely gorgeous, I’m glad that it was chosen as a best flanker.

Thank you for this great work and wonderful selection! I live in France, EU and would love to win Amado Mio

  • What a list! Glad I came back from a long, unwanted break and get back on track with fragrances! Need to save some money after reading some new articles… damn 🙂 I’d like to win Amado Mio – this bottle is so greek and sexy. Poland, EU

  • I just discovered CaFleureBon this year, and have integrated reading your articles in my morning ritual since then! It’s been a delight reading a well-written article on fragrance nearly every morning. This article is no different!

I’m always glad to see mention of natural perfume and natural perfumers. I have yet to try but am also very interested in Hima Jomo, Aftelier’s Boheme Confection, and Lost in Roses! As such, if picked for this giveaway I’d love to try Lost in Roses. Best wishes from the US.

  • Michael Prince says:

I loved Ermano and Michelyn’s best and worst lists of 2022. I haven’t tried anything they spoke about, but heard so many great things about them. I am from the USA and would like to win Antonio Alessandria Parfums Amado Mio, Thomas de Monaco Eau Couer, and April Aromatics Lost in Roses.

  • Excellent review. It’s good to come back to it later because some names I have not heard of before. I do agree that natural perfumery is catching steam. Neela Vermiere is an amazing person and I am glad she was mentioned.I also agree that Uncut Gem was not as expected. Umema is an amazing perfume that I tried once. I am also glad Crystal Saffron was mentioned as it is one of my favorites.

    USA
Interested in trying in Eau Coeur. Thank you
