sultan Pasha attars turath review

Lester Burnham: So… you gonna tell me? What do you want?

Angela Hayes: [softly]  I don’t know.

Lester Burnham : You… don’t know?

Angela Hayes: What do you want?

Lester Burnham: Are you kidding? I want you.

[lightly stroking her cheek]

Lester Burnha: I wanted you since the first moment I saw you. You are the most beautiful thing I have ever seen.

[kisses her forehead]

Angela Hayes: You don’t think I’m ordinary?

[he kisses her alongside her eye]

Lester Burnham: You couldn’t be ordinary if you tried.

[kisses her cheek]

Angela Hayes: Thank you. I don’t think there’s anything worse than being ordinary. – Scene from the film American Beauty (1999)

Best rose oud attars

NARRATION: (Mahler playing softly in the background) “Imagine her on a bed sprawled with roses. She breathes heavily, eyes half-closed against the lamplight, and the flowers rise and fall on her breast. Desire is thick and close. Imagine her within reach. Imagine her perfume; velvet and secret, like the center of each of those roses as it gives up its scent, the musky smell of her sweat. Now the room: The air is warm and lazy, oxygen sucked by wanting; roses, sex, fur and something smoky, ashen, sweet, like the end of a Sobranie … “ (sound of record screeching to a halt)

Ok, this American Beauty-inspired mise-en-scene was going to be my introduction to Sultan Pasha’s rose-oud fragrance, Turath, but in my zeal to try this baby, I pulled out the stopper rather too quickly, causing large drops to fall on my wrist and shirt cuff. This is an attar, mind you, meant to be applied with the tip of a hatpin, not splashed on like Jean Nate. Suddenly, my bedroom was filled with a psychedelic barrage of the most intense aromas: bushels of roses, barnyard, spilled medicine, furry animals, hookah smoke, melted cream and unleashed desire. Oh yeah, my bedroom smelled like a trippy orgy had just taken place, crashed by a bunch of farm animals and woodland creatures. I had been headed out the door to run errands but suddenly had visions of dogs chasing me down the street, prey drive in full alert, and neighbours backing away from me in stores. I stayed home for a while. Which, it turns out, was a good thing. It gave me the opportunity to experience an attar from a distance for the first time, and smell it unfold in all its glorious excess.

Turath, which means “heritage” or “legacy” in Arabic, may be Pasha’s magnum opus, the result of a years-long quest to produce the quintessential rose-oud attar. And he may have just pulled it off: Turath is a seriously opulent, gorgeous – and thank to a generous dose of civet and musk accord, skanky – “beast” (to use his own descriptor) that blends two high-quality Hindu ouds, three rose absolutes, and of whole lot of naughtiness. As it snakes through the air, it is an amalgam of winey blooms, cracked wood, smoke, and carnality: Claudia Cardinale, Aldonza, the goddess Al-Lat, and Maria Callas all morphing into one. And, oh my word, this has got to be the sexiest perfume of the year.

The next day I calm down and decide to try a tiny drop on my wrist. Instead of the explosion of civet I got from my first go, the roses dominate immediately. An entire bouquet of roses opens in slow motion, all ripe fruit and satin. For the next half hour or so, there are roses turning in a kaleidoscope of odors ranging from blood orange and raspberry to milk, stem, and spiky, carnation-like spice. Stealthily curling into the roses are complex aromas of oud; crackled wood, wet Band-Aids, damp earth, smoked hookah pipe. In a sea of artificial ouds these days, it is easy to forget how complicated and addictive the real thing can be. The two ouds Pasha employs hold their own against the roses without taking them over, and the result is a seamlessly rich fragrance.

But Sultan Pasha Attars Turath is just getting warmed up as it heads into its second act, which brings a brilliant civet-musk accord that adds a patina of vintage. Narcissus and tuberose come out to play, bringing creamy, fleshy, silkiness and amping up the floral quality of the composition. As the animal smells meld with the roses, Turath seems deeply female, and I hear in my mind the wine-soaked, heart-shaking voice of the great Egyptian singer Umm Kulthum. In bigger doses, as I discovered on day one, Turath’s bodily, animal odors can erupt into a sexual skankfest that you would probably want to share only with an established lover. But applied sparingly, it is so sensual and erotic that it makes me want to put on wine-coloured lipstick and some serious stilettos, even if only to prowl around my living room.

Drying down, which, let me tell you, takes time, Sultan Pasha Attars Turath glows. The animalics, now tanged-up with the sweat-salt of labdanum, make way for some vanillic benzoin and incense in the base, and the rose and oud coalesce into a classically beauty, even refined, accord. If you try only one rose or oud perfume this winter, make it this one. Sultan Pasha couldn’t do ordinary if he tried.

Notes: Taifi rose otto, Salvadora persica essential oil, damascena rose absolute, centifolia rose absolute, bourbon geranium absolute and oil, jasmine grandiflorum absolute, jasmine sambac absolute, orange blossom absolute, tuberose absolute, mimosa absolute, peach, narcissus absolute, deer musk accord, boyah oil, Hindi oud, Hindi oud nasha, ambergris, benzoin, olibanum, labdanum.

  • I consider wearing an attar a mystic experience. Is the apex of perfumery. The ultimate limit one can reach in this journey. Thanks for the opportunity! I would love to test this particular attar by Sultan Pasha.

  • I do not have a favorite Sultan Pasha attar as I haven’t tried any. This impressed me in Lauryn’s review, “Drying down, which, let me tell you, takes time, Sultan Pasha Attars Turath glows. The animalics, now tanged-up with the sweat-salt of labdanum, make way for some vanillic benzoin and incense in the base, and the rose and oud coalesce into a classically beauty, even refined, accord. I have smelled zooligist sacred scarab but never any of sultans solo stuff. I would really love to win this. His work sounds so complex from the review above. I really love the way the labdanum seems to play here. I live in Indiana.

  • Oh wow this sounds gorgeous! Lauryn’s description of the animalics melding with the roses is making me swoon. I’ve only ever had the change to try Sacred Scarab, not any of Sultan Pasha’s attars, so I would really love to try this one. I’m in MN, USA.

  • Wow, I have never before worn an attar, and Turath sounds like it would be a truly remarkable introduction. I loved the review taking us on the journey that different wears of a fragrance can be. The notes list is impressive, and I am sure the quality of the ingredients is wonderful. Many thanks to Sultan Pasha for this VERY generous giveaway!

  • Rose and oud are always a good idea. If it is created by Sultan Pasha and it is an attar, you really would not need another rose oud fragrance in your collection.
Please count me in! Many thanks!

  • It is a high praise from Lauryn for Sultan Pasha Attars Turath as she calls it the magnum opus of Sultan Pasha. The civet is apparent from the beginning but the rose plays a dominant role. Later, the attar reveals with vintage side with the help of notes like narcissus and tuberose. I am in US.

I heard so much about Sultan Pasha but I never tried any. What impressed me about Lauryn’s review is the visual description of the scent. The mix of animalics with vanilla and labdanum and the description of the rose oud in dry down makes me interested in trying this. USA

  • Lauryn did an amazing job describing this fragrance. I would love to get my nose on this. The animalics with the roses sounds amazing. I live in Houston Texas and would like to enter the giveaway. Thanks

  • Elise Pearlstine says:

Beautifully written Lauryn! Both the explosion of scent and the more subtle tiny drops of fragrance seem to exhibit both sides of oud and rose with lovely supporting players and my favorite of bases, labdanum and amber! I have not tried any of Sultan Pasha’s attars but Âme Sombre sounds lovely!

  • Pasha’s magnum opus you say?! I have yet to try any of his attar’s but I have tried Civet de Nuit and own Sacred Scarab. Both are fantastic, so I am quite enamored with the Sultan and would love to try more of his creations. I’m greatly anticipating his own spray perfume line that was rumored to launch later this year. Rose Oud fragrances can be very redundant, however when executed properly, they are to die for. “animal odors can erupt into a sexual skankfest that you would probably want to share only with an established lover” I love my skanky perfumes, I would adore this! Thank you for the draw!

Thank you very much for the lovely review. I have been wanting to get in to attars for some time, but never really knew where to start. But from hearing what you had to say about this, describing it as the quintessential rose-oud, maybe this is the right place to start.

  • What a beautiful and inspiring review! I have yet to try Sultan Pasha Attars, but if Lauryn says that Turath “may be Pasha’s magnum opus”, this would be a transcendent opportunity to be introduced to his art (even more because rose is truly my favorite note). I live in Porto, Portugal.

Thank you all for your boundless generosity!

  • The unique, fascinating and beautiful notes of this fragrance strike me. I live in Trzebnica, Poland, EU. I don’t have a favorite Sultan Pasha attar because I never tried any fragrances from this house but I think that Turath sounds like something wonderful it would be an absolutely amazing experience to try it out.

  • Wow, Lauryn went wild on this one! It truly seems that Turath won her heart, and that’s no surprise given the lush flowers, inebriating oud and all the concoction of erotic and electrifying notes.
Another thing that strikes me is that Turath can present itself so differently according to whether it was applied with jealousy or generosity. A true chameleon.
I would love to experience Claudia Cardinale, Aldonza, the goddess Al-Lat, and Maria Callas morphing into one…perfume.

  • Great review thank you, I love hearing how a fragrance develops over time. I bought a sample set of Sultan Pasha attars many years ago and remember loving too many of them! I am in Australia.

  • I love the description of the attar! It sounds so yummy and sensual. I can’t afford any but irisior sounds like a dream come true. NY state USA. Thank you for the drawing.

My favorite Sultan Pasha Attars is Turath because I love touberose and when I see a touberose I want it.

  • I’ve never tried an Attar. I realize I am missing out 9 years into my fragrance journey. This sounds like it needs a warning on the bottle!! I’m not familiar with Sultan Pasha, but knowing he doesn’t do ordinary puts him on my list to check out. Thanks for the chance!! Fingers crossed. USA.

  • When it comes to rose oud combos, no one is truly able to seamlessly harmonize them such as Sultan Pasha. Juriah was a love at first sniff for me, and based on Lauryn’s exceptional review I am sure this one will live way above expectations.

Thanks for the draw. Based in the EU

I am intrigued by use of roses and oud in this composition and they react with animalic notes. A house that I have got no experience with but I am curious to find out more nonetheless. Thanks a million from the UK

The two ouds Pasha employs hold their own against the roses without taking them over, and the result is a seamlessly rich fragrance. Curious to know how it will smell like on skin especially how Rose and Oud combination blends with the cacophony of all the other notes. A house that I have not tried anything by thusfar. Thanks a lot from United Kingdom

  • Sultan Pasha is the absolute maestro when it comes to rose-oud scents. I remember when I smelled Juriah for the first time, it struck a chord like no other perfume had done before. I’m sure his newest creation is an absolute beauty as Lauryn described it.

    Thanks for the draw.

  • Ohh a true oudh!!! My heart. What intrigued me was the intention of making THE ONE truly best Rose Oudh Attar. So many have made blends, often amazing, sadly some have fallen short…but this…this has my full attention. I’m soooo intrigued. Ohhh my prayers are being said as soon as I hit post!!!

  • I really enjoyed the story about accidentally spilling some on your sleeve, and having horrid visions of being chased by dogs as you attempt to run errands! Thank you for sharing. I have never tried an attar, and this sounds like something exceptional. I was very interested to read about the many changes it makes over the wearing. Thank you for the review and give away, writing from the EU.

  • This sounds amazing due to the combination of rose and animalic facets. I have not had the pleasure of trying Sultan Pasha’s work, but have heard rave reviews. I am curious to try an attar because of the way it seems to unfold and change over time. Thanks to all for the chance to win! (I’m in the U.S.)

  • Love Sultan Pasha! One of my favorite attars is Basmati Rose. Animalic fragrances are very appealing to me. Turath, with its “damp earth, smoked hookah pipe” description sounds fantastic. Thanks for another awesome review and opportunity to sniff. Mich USA

  • I love rose-oud, and I love Sultan Pasha’s work! My favorite of his fragrances that I’ve tried is Juriah, so if Lauryn says that Turath is THE rose-oud to try this season, I am very intrigued! I’m most interested in how the other floral absolutes play with the delicacy of Taif rose. Best wishes from NJ, USA.

Thanks for the great review Lauryn.

Sultan Pasha’s attars are on my list to try and I love how unabashed this review is – right from being drenched in attar to experiencing all the facets of the two ouds and floral combinations over the different phases. This truly sounds like a sensual and erotic fragrance.

I have not smelt Sultan Pasha’s attars before, but he truly does not do ordinary.

    Cheers from WI, USA

  • Uff…!! The way you have described the scent profile of this attar lauryn, cant help but imagining the sultry and seductive aroma of the attar. I have not tried any of Sultan Pashas attar and have longed to try his creations. The oils used in Turath, all I can imagine is that sweet jammy trifecta of rose with some dirtiness of jasmine sambac. Bittersweet tangy mimosa and neroli(orange blossom). Animalic deer musk with barny-woody hindi oud and salty ambergirs giving that erotic edge, and last but not least that sweet mouthwatering vanillic benzoin and incense notes from olibanum and labdanum harmoniously complimenting the whole structure of the attar. Sounds like one of the best Rose and Oud attar ever, invoking ones carnal desires.
Thank you for this opportunity Lauryn.
    I am from India.

  • I do not have much experience with attars, but I wish I had tested some of Sultan Pasha’s creations. I know he has a fanbase following him, something of a cult that I want to be member of lol
I know his work is well respected among those who enjoy attars, so that makes me trust his skills and mastercraft of this art.
I love roses and I think I will love Turath if I ever get my nose on it.
    Thank you

  • I am amazed by the craftmanship and the research on ingredients by Sultan Pasha.
I am fascinated by the attar and the ritual that comes with it.
I don’t have a favourite, because it would be my first Sultan Pasha attar.

The more animalic and barnyard, the happier I am. Of course, I do like a bit of floral accompaniment to temper things….but not too much. I love this review because it introduced me to both a brilliant attar and also to the late Egyptian singer Umm Kultham. I haven’t tried any of Sultan Pashas’s attars.
    I live in the USA.

  • I like the shapeshifting it has and various facets depending how much u choose to apply, my fave attar is hard to say but il say encens chypre atm. Im in the United kingdom

  • Lauryn!!!!❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️ Wow! What a gorgeous description of what I am sure will be a Glorious Attar! The lucky, lucky ones to be able to acquire a bottle will surely find joy in this treasure! Thank you for this INCREDIBLE opportunity!!! I happen to have samples of Sultan Pasha’s other attars that we are experiencing at a leisurely, respectful pace. They are Amazing! I don’t have a favorite yet (because I want All of them)! ❤️❤️❤️ USA

  • This is a very glowing review of Sultan Pasha Attars Turath by Lauryn. Wish I could say I have a favorite Sultan Pasha Attar but I don’t, as they are generally out of reach, price-wise. Sultan Pasha Attars Turath has everything I love – high quality rose varieties, oud, jasmine, tuberose, narcissus, musk, labdanum, frankincense, and others. It is exciting that an attar that Lauryn considers Pasha’s magnum opus is offered as a draw. Thank you for this review and a generous draw. I’m from the USA.

  • I’m not really familiar with attars but I understand that they’re by definition complex with lots of depth. The list of notes is exceptional and the quality of each ingredient is apparent. Rose and oud is such a classic pairing. This attar seems like an extraordinary example. Thanks to Sultan Pasha Attars! MD, USA.

  • I truly love Sultan Pasha’s creations including his last one for Zoology. My favorite attar has to be Tabac Grande or Vetiver Blanc 🙂 Love to win this one. Really love his work! From Europe

  • Christos GX says:

Wearing Ittar or attar can be an icredible experience and sometimes even challenging because you do not know how heavy it is going to smell on skin, but still smelling an attar can be one of a kind. I loved the description about the scene that inspired this creation and how it states the perfect blending of the notes. It makes me want to have that experience as well.I have not tried any Sultan Pasha attar, but judging by this one,i bet they are amazing.I live in Greece, EU.

  • Wonderful review, for a great perfumer. I am intrigued by the ingredients of this perfum and by the attar format.
I have never tried an attar from Sultan Pasha, but I have tried his sacred scarab.
    Claudia, EU

  • Recently I have found out about the existence of attars and I have decided that it’s the ultimate fragrance experience one can have. There is a quote in my country that says “strong essences are kept in small bottles”.
Turath symbolises for me the most exquisite experience.
Lauryn, thanks so much for this review! It was a pleasure reading it! Also, many thanks for the draw.
I am not familiar with any Sultan Pasha works.
    Hugs from Romania

I have a few oudh and rose perfumes, nevertheless I’ve never tried an attar from Sultan Pasha. Turath seems almost dangerous: opulent, gorgeous, addictive. I would love to finally get to wear this “beast”.

    I live in Portugal

  • Thanks for this great review, Lauryn! I love the description of the Sultan Pasha attar via different acts. I haven’t tried Sultan Pasha starts yet and basing on Lauryn’s review, it’s a very potent, complex, beautiful and sensual rose and oud fragrance. Thanks for this opportunity! – CA, USA

  • I love the idea that this fragrance marries Sultan Pasha’s classic sophistication with an “unleashed” sensuality. Sign me up! Plus, I’m a massive fan of Hindi ouds. My favourite from SP, so far, is the gorgeous Irisoir.

  • Repeating my comment because I forgot to say, I live in Ireland :/

I love the idea that this fragrance marries Sultan Pasha’s classic sophistication with an “unleashed” sensuality. Sign me up! Plus, I’m a massive fan of Hindi ouds. My favourite from SP, so far, is the gorgeous Irisoir.

  • This sounds like the most eclectic scent, all roses, band aids and civet. I have not tried an attar yet but this sounds like the one to try first. In maryland.

  • Oh boy, thanks Lauryn for such amazing review, it delivers a great experience on attars. To me, Attars are the the ultimate experience that any fragrance lover can have. I have to say that I have not tried any Sultan Pasha Attar yet, but I surely want to do it soon.
I loved this Attar because of the amazing rose experience it surely delivers, with the amazing animalic notes.

When I read this articles, I see a fragrance that brings out our primal urges and desires. This is without a doubt one of the holy grails of seduction. The article did an amazing job at describing the creamy and silliness of rose while comparing it to a love potion. Not many fragrances in my opinion are able to create the effect of love, I would love to try this out with my partner to see how amazing it is. I live in nyc, USA.

  • This sounds like quite the rose-oud combo and is probably quite distinct from the many attempts from other creators for this magical combo in addition to the naughty animalics 🙂 I have not yet had an opportunity to try out any of Sultan Pasha’s attars but my word! this sounds like the perfect starting point. I’m in USA

  • Wow, what a review! First, the introduction, evocative and soulful and full of detail; it really gave me a sense of what to expect from Turath. Also, I knew attars were strong, but I had no idea just a few drops could fumigate a room. Your description of the “trippy orgy” just a few drops of Turath unleashed upon your bedroom is a riot.

I first heard of Sultan Pasha as the perfumer for Zoologist Sacred Scarab, which is by all accounts a beautiful fragrance and on my to-try list. This rose and oud “magnum opus” attar sounds to be beautiful in a wholly different way—maximal, opulent, potent, and raunchy. I’ve yet to try an attar, or even that many of the omnipresent rose and oud perfumes out there, and this one just rocketed to the top of my list. Thank you for the wonderful review, Lauryn!

I’m in the midwest, USA. I haven’t tried any Sultan Pasha perfumes or any attars, but I hope to soon.

  • This sounds insanely heady and incredible, fantastic review by Lauren. I’ve never smelled an attar but I’ve heard amazing things about Pasha’s work. I’ve only smelled Sacred Scarab which I found beautiful and complex. Thank you for the opportunity to try this! In USA

  • I like oud&rose combo and smelled it in quite a few perfumes during the past years. Maybe it’s a bit overdone, but I have never tried an attar! I don’t know, but I’m pretty sure it’s a different experience and would like to see the difference vs eastern perfumes.
    I’m in the EU.

  • I adore works of SP. Considering how much I love narcissus in Chypre Narcisse (2019, SPA) and his oud-heavy compositions, Lauryn’s description of narcissus and tuberose made me more curious. So I cannot say no to such an offer! Thanks a lot. I live in Dhaka.

  • My favourite Sultan Pasha attar (actually attar in general) is Juriah. To me, that’s the best rose oud fragrance ever created, an especially impressive feat in a crowded genre. So when I heard Lauryn describe this as Pasha’s magnum opus and another rose oud, I knew I had to try it. Thanks for the giveaway, I’m from Singapore

  • Oh lord. This review really tickled me with the imagery of a trippy orgy crashed by woodland creatures. I LOVE skany animalic perfumes, they make me feel like myself in my purest form. Silk kimonos, smoky dark bedrooms, golden light gleaming off sweaty skin. This attar sounds absolutely amazing. The only other work I’ve smelled by Sultan Pasha is Sacred Scarab which I own and treasure. I live in Missouri USA

  • I have looked into a few attars from this house, but have yet to purchase any. I have also read really good reviews, but this one was fantastic. It really evoked a beautiful scene. Amazing how a few drops of this stuff fills an entire room. Thank you for the draw! US

  • Let me tell you… I got goosebumps reading the description of scents emerging from the Sultan Pasha Attars Turath… While I am not a lover of rose per se, it sounds like all the right facets are coming alive mixed with sweetness of peach and with other flowers and together have a seductive dance with their contra-parts comprising of ouds, musk/civet, labdanum, ambergris… And honestly, who would say no to a fragrance which brings up sensuality in you and desire to turn into femme fatale you had had in yourself all along. I am in love

  • I got carried away thinking about the (imaginary) smell of the Attar that I forgot to say that so far I didn’t have a chance to smell any of Sultan Pasha’s attars so I don’t have a favorite. And I am in Austria, EU.
    Thank you.

  • Wow, it sounds like Turath is a beast of ravaging sensuality – in a world with millions of middling, commercial oud-rose combinations, the sheer imagery that Lauryn describes is enough to sell me on this one. I’ve warmed up to animalics lately, but mainly those that convey a sense of human warmth, so this sounds perfect!

I live in Singapore, and would love to have the opportunity to try this! I haven’t tried any Sultan Pasha attars so I don’t have a favourite, but I’ve been particularly interested in Chypre Chrysantheme for a while now!

Wonderful review Lauryn! What strikes me about Sultan Pasha Attars Turath based on Lauryn’s review is how she describes it as a “psychedelic barrage” of scents and notes, like a “trippy orgy”. I love fragrances that are intense and overwhelming, as well as skanky and funky. That sounds like exactly what I’m looking for in a perfume. My favorite Sultan Pasha attar is Juriah. I live in the US.
