Chatillon Lux Agua Fresca Review (Shawn Maher) 2022 + Summer Peach Cocktail Giveaway

Chatillon Lux Agua Fresca by Shawn Maher

Chatillon Lux Agua Fresca

Agua fresca – just the name summons hot sand and white linen shirts, the smell of pool water and citrus as the sun simmers and Latin dance music beats somewhere nearby. Mexico’s  summer drink of lime juice and melon provides the inspiration for Chatillon Lux Agua Fresca from St. Louis perfumer Shawn Maher. A deliciously nectarous but airy blend of apricot, yuzu, ripe melon and berry, invigorated with cucumber, deepened with vetiver and smoothed with cream, Agua Fresca is a summer splash in more than one sense – it is one of the best summer releases of 2022.

Agua Fresca first iteration was a perfume Maher created for another brand that never quite gelled. He eventually released it under Chatillon lux’s label as a limited edition called Nonaginta, which soon became a fan favourite. But while he received requests to add it to the permanent line, Maher felt the scent lacked the personal connections of his other fragrances. Inspiration came from his memories of those 90s unisex fruity scents and summer drinks in Maher’s neighbourhood, the Latin-inflected Cherokee Street Historic District in Saint Louis.

Because I really love an agua fresca to help quench the fires of hot sauce … it hit me that this was the direction that this fragrance should head,” Maher explains. “Unsurprisingly, this juice starts off with a melange of tropical fruits. It contains the citrus of a yuzu accord, an apricot essential oil, a lime accord based on the candy-like lime oxide, a melon accord with the 90s-tastic calone as well as the apple-tinged musk zenolide, a strawberry accord featuring strawberry glycidate and cassiffix, and a pineapple essential oil.”

When I first sprayed on Chatillon Lux Agua Fresca, I expected a lime-squeezy, tropical fruit cocktail as big one of those coconut umbrella drinks that turn up in beachy rom coms from the 60s. But smelling Agua Fresca was quite another matter. That initial spritz instead made me think prunol! – that delectably elegant DeLaire base of peaches, cardamom and aldehydes – and I was reminded of David Jourquin’s stunning Cuir Venetien, which uses an extravagant amount of the accord. Agua Fresca’s opening is similarly and surprisingly elegant. Instead of going for overtly sunbright olfactory colours in Agua Fresca, Maher creates an ambrosial cocktail of bright piquant citrusy notes and flowery yuzu that he swirls into a shimmering, aquatint schema with the exquisite delicacy of origami.

The opening brings delectable apricot and yuzu notes that together smell initially like ripe peach spattered with lime juice. The effect of the top notes is so delectable I run to the kitchen for one of the peaches I bought yesterday for comparison. But, as seconds tick by, the yuzu and apricot unnoticeably separate and become more discernable as themselves. First is the apricot, fuzzy-skinned, sweet, mouthwateringly life-like. Next, yuzu brings its customary sharp citrus brio and flowery edge. These two notes are so lusciously realistic that I would have loved Chatillon Lux Agua Fresca had it stopped right there.

But Maher is too thoughtful a perfumer for that. After the top notes of Agua Fresca leave me downright thirsty, Maher offers a cool drink of cucumber water as refreshment and adds a generous dose of transparent jasmine hedione to aerate the fragrance. A toned-down strawberry adds a berryish sweetness that, when swirled into the creamy base and merging with the cucumber water brings memories of crustless cucumber sandwiches and fresh berries with clotted cream served on sheeny porcelain plates in the English countryside. But then a subtle dab of coconut shifts Agua Fresca back to tropical climes. I don’t really pick up the vetiver in the base, which is something of a wonder, since that rooty savour is usually hard to miss. Maher uses a particularly light Haitian vetiver along with the aroma chemical vetikone, that, he explains, “emphasizes the grapefruit rind aspect of vetiver so that it would blend in with its surroundings.” In its middle section, the composition coalesces into a lovely, refreshing fusion of velvety, ripe tree fruit, vivid yuzu and creamy berry.

On paper, the notes listing for Chatillon Lux Agua Fresca may recall some of the unfortunate celeb fruity disasters that have blighted many a nightclub dance floor. But believe this writer when I tell you this sophisticated, gorgeous fragrance is a perfect antidote to the predictable array of citrus and aquatic eau de colognes that leap onto fragrance shelves every June. I’ll be wearing this a lot – with a great big smile.

Notes: Melon, apricot, yuzu, pineapple, strawberry, cucumber, vetiver, cream.

  • This perfume reads with a lot of promise in it’s description by the reviewer. What struck me was the addition of aroma chemical vetikone with the vetiver. I have no favorite from this house. US

I was just reading the article on the alpine inspired fragrance, and now I’m off to the beaches of Mexico! This makes me wish we were already getting better weather, the Pacific Northwest is locked in a perpetual early spring type conditions. Best summer release for 2022!!!! Knowing that Lauryn will be wearing this often with a smile has my interest. I’d love to win this, I need summer in a bottle at least. My favorite drinks of summer are Aperol Spritz and Lime Daiquiris. Either of those would go great as a fragrance. Maybe Shawn will get an inspiration from the readers comments. I’ll be reading to see what favorites others have and if I’m missing out. Happy summer. Not familiar with this brand, but going to have a look. Thanks for the chance. USA.

  • Agua Fresca sounds like the perfect summertime fragrance! I love to drink Strawberry Limeade in the summer. And yes, in the right hands, strawberry limeade could create a great perfume! I am in the US.

  • Wow! This sounds so refreshing yet not simplistic in the least. I love lime and the apricot, strawberry, cream, yuzu, and cucumber seem to be the perfect departure from more expected scents. In maryland

  • Summer in a bottle! Shawn Maher is always so innovative with his compositions. Agua Fresca seems like a cool drink for hot weather. The summery peach and yuzu along with my favorite refresher, cucumber water, combine with fruit and cream to make a delectable concoction. I love vetiver and the grapefruit rind aspect of the Haitian vetiver sounds fantastic. I like gin and tonic in hot weather and yes, it’s a great fragrance. I’ve only tried Weinstrasse from Chatillon Lux. I’m in MD, USA.

  • Chatillon Lux Agua Fresca sounds like a great take on a common style of fragrance. My favorite Chatillon Lux is Unconditional Surrender. I go for a Long Island Iced Tea when its hot, probably not worthy of a fragrance! NV, USA.

  • I love an agua fresca, too! Finding interesting and naturalistic fruity perfumes is one of my missions in the perfumery world. As a child of the 2000’s, my nose has been conditioned to accept them, yet I feel a need to prove they aren’t all dance floor disasters. Oh well if it’s viewed as tacky; I especially appreciate a good strawberry note. I grew up surrounded by tropical kitsch so I also appreciate the nod to umbrella drinks. I live in New England, USA.

This is a combination for summer that sounds so unique. I’ve started to better appreciate vetiver and it sounds like the perfect grounding scent to the other more whimsical fruit scents here. I like fruit based cocktails so this sounds yummy. They are perfect in summer, even the dark fruit ones that I prefer, and I like dark fruits in my perfumes, too, so this would be an unusual and welcome addition. I have read about Shawn’s other perfumes and I hope Yuzu/Rose/Patchouli comes back in stock soon. I live in Maryland, thanks for the draw.

  • Agua Fresca seems to be a perfect summer perfume, with smells of fruits galore (Melon, apricot, yuzu, pineapple, strawberry, cucumber, vetiver, cream). Maher perfumes are strong and have good stories behind them. I have tried all from his Maher Olfactive and Chatillon Lux collections – through affordable discovery sets. Tempo Rubato, Treachery, are among favorites though almost all of his creations are very good. Coconut water is great for hot weather, though not sure it will be a great perfume note. Thanks for the review and draw. From USA.

Love this one the best and during hot months hard to beat a pink lemonade which would make for an interesting scent !

  • This looks AMAZING. I am a big fan of Shawn’s fragrances. They are totally unique even in the niche world, but also so appealing. The “juicy” ones are, in my opinion, what he does best. I am DESPERATE to win this one. Peach is my favorite fruit. My favorite Chatillon Lux is probably Yuzu/Rose/Patchouli, with Sunrise on LaSalle a close second. If someone turned either of these fragrances into a soft drink, it would be my go-to for summer weather. Cheers from NC, USA!

  • Regis Monkton says:

I live in the humid Mid-Atlantic region, and I’m now under the impression that I would enjoy wearing this fragrance during the hot time of the year. I think that the list of notes for this is interesting and I’d like to try it. Shawn Maher’s collected fragrance works have been on my long list of fragrance houses to sample, but I haven’t tried anything from him yet. I like to drink a lot of different chilled beverages during the hot time of the year, and I guess that a lot of them might make an interesting aspect to a fragrance. I live in the U.S.A.

  • I’ve never tried a Chatillon Lux fragrance. This is the first review I’ve seen of this brand. Agua Fresca sounds like a fresh twist on a summer fragrance. The addition of a cucumber note makes me think of a cool watery fragrance that would be refreshing. I would love to try it.

When the weather gets hot and muggy here I crave sparkling water with strawberry slices or if I’m ready for a treat, a tropical sangria in a crystal glass is what I want. I think either one of these combos would make an excellent fragrance.

Thanks for the giveaway! In the USA.

  • I’ve been following Shawn’s descriptions of Agua Fresca on Instagram; it sounds like the perfect fragrance for the balmy days of summer. I was initially worried this might be a little saccharine, but I’m happy to hear it described as elegant, airy, and piquant. Agua Fresca sounds fun, and seasonal, and I look forward to picking up a sample and using it all summer long. It will go along well with an ice cold martini or a spicy Bloody Maria, though neither of those would make a good perfume themselves.

My favorite Chatillon Lux fragrances are La Petite Prairie, Admiral (more of a warm-weather fragrance) and Gratiot League Square (better in fall and winter).

    I’m in the midwest, USA.

  • Wow! This sounds ridiculously refreshing, light, and airy. I’m so interested in the melon note; I don’t think I’ve ever smelled melon in a fragrance before but it sounds so nice. I haven’t tried any other Chatillon Lux fragrances but now I have a new rabbit hole to get lost in

  • Agua Fresca seems to be made of a lot of tropical notes that would make it a bit overwhelming and “a celebrity fragrance”. Lauryn is assuring us this fragrance is sophisticated and a gorgeous fragrance. I would love to try Shawn Maher’s creation because I have heard a lot of positive things about him. I have not tried any Chatillon Lux fragrances yet. In the summer, I love a homemade lemonade.

  • An agua fresca scent is definitely a creative and refreshing fragrance for the summer! I like how this take is not overly bright, but with an ambrosial character. I am excited by the yuzu and apricot notes. I haven’t tried a Chatillon Lux fragrance. When it’s hot out, refreshing iced tea is my go-to and it would definitely make a good perfume! I am from CA, USA.

  • Agua Fresca is everything I need to rock this summer. The pool vives this fragrance gives is surely something amazing. I would adore to try this on my skin, since I love citrus fragrances.
When weather boils I crave to drink a cold and juicy ginger lemonade and I think it would make a great perfume.
I have not tried anything from Chatillon Lux sadly, but I hope to do it soon.

  • Michael Prince says:

What strikes me about Chatillon Lux Agua Fresca is that is sounds like the ideal hot weather fragrance. Something that is refreshing, uplifting, vibrant, and full of life. This sounds like the perfectly blended fruity cocktail you always tried to make, but never perfected. When it’s really hot outside I love Ice Water with a spritz of lemon and lime juice. It’s the perfect drink, but wouldn’t make a good perfume. My favorite Chatillon Lux fragrance is Confluence. I am from the USA.

  • Chatillon Lux Agua Fresca sounds downright delectable. As I was reading Lauryn’s review I was literally salivating just picturing the images to at were generated by reading her descriptive words. Especially with the weather currently in the 90s, a fragrance like Agua Fresca seems perfect for Summer 2022. I’m most interested in how the melange of juicy and succulent flavors blends together to create what I can only imagine is a truly magical concoction. I have never tried any Chatillon Lux offerings but after reading about Agua Fresca I certainly would love to. As far as what I love drinking when the temperature rises is easy; a minty mojito (hopefully somewhere on a beach or poolside), and I absolutely LOVE mint in fragrances. Thanks, as always, for the opportunity and cheers from Illinois, USA!

  • sephrenia300 says:

Lovely review Lauryn! What strikes me about Chatillon Lux Agua Fresca is Lauryn’s description of it as being completely different from the “unfortunate celeb fruity disasters” which are the bane of my existence, but rather is a sophisticated, gorgeous, and thoughtful scent that is the perfect antidote to the predictable. I generally don’t like fruity aquatic summer scents but that description makes me want to try Agua Fresca for sure.

When the weather boils over, I crave fancy herbal floral drinks – like a cucumber lavender lemonade. I definitely think it would make a lovely summer perfume! I live in the US.

  • Jed Or Alive says:

Agua Fresca sounds wonderful. Hailing from Southern California, there’s an abundance of fantastic Mexican food, and an agua fresca really does hit the spot alongside those spicy salsas. I’m a big fan of Shawn’s fragrances, with my current favorite being Weinstrasse.

When the temperature gets up into ‘scorching’ here, it’s hard to beat a tall ice water. It wouldn’t necessarily make for the best perfume inspiration, though.

  • Bryant Worley says:

.This sounds quite refreshing, and has a wonderfully cistrusy-fruity note listing. This would make a fantastic summertime drìnk.

I follow you on IG: @Brygantor_1.

I don’t have a favorite Chatillon Lux fragrance, as I have never tried the brand.

My favorite summertime drìnk to quench my thirst when the weather boils over is Snapple Apple. It would not make a good perfume.

I live in Waldorf, Maryland, USA.

  • wallygator88 says:

Thanks for the great writeup Lauryn.

Agua Fresca sounds like an absolutely wonderful fragrance. I’m trying to figure out if the scent conveys the fruity acidic sourness that I so much enjoy in a nice aguas frescas. I love the fact that this scent has cucumber and a sweet creaminess to stretch it out.

Absolutely love the perfumer for always mentioning what aromachemicals go into his perfumes and why.

My favourite CL fragrance is La Quatrieme Ville – a beautiful mix of vetiver and green cardamom.

I would love to have a nice tamarind or hibuscus chilled drink in this weather and I thoink that they would translate into nice perfumes.

    Cheers from WI, USA

  • This sounds like the perfect fragrance to fight this crazy heat wave. I’m intrigued by how the cream note fits in. I always go for citrus in the summer months, though. I haven’t had the opportunity to try anything from Chatillon Lux. USA

  • This combination sounds gorgeous and cheerful. I’d love to try a new take on summer refreshment. I haven’t tried any Chatillon Lux yet. Drinks-wise, I tend to favor beer for hot weather; I’m not sure if there’s been any good beer-ish fragrance before, but I have hope someone might make one some day. I’m not mad at gin-inspired scents, either.
    (SoCal)

  • This fragrance sounds so happy and carefree!
I am intrigued by ‘an ambrosial cocktail of bright piquant citrusy notes and flowery yuzu’.
Sounds like it would be wonderful over ice or sprayed from a perfume bottle.
I have not tried any of Chatillon Lux fragrances.

    Thank you.
    I am in the US.
