Rogue Perfumery A’Oud Ancienne (Manuel Cross) 2022 + The Heart of Oud Giveaway

Rogue Perfumery A'Oud Ancienne New Perfume

Rogue Perfumery A’Oud Ancienne by Karl

“With A’Oud Ancienne I wanted to highlight the powerful and unusual fragrance and not follow the hundreds of “crowd pleasing” ambrox-laden ouds on the market. I sought out unconventional materials and aroma chemicals and paired them with more familiar notes, giving A’Oud Ancienne my Rogue signature by uncovering Assam Oud’s animalic, earthy and leathery facets.” Manuel Cross

As a perfume lover you might ask “do we really need another oud?”  A resounding yes, if it is Manuel Cross’ new Rogue Perfumery A’Oud Ancienne, (the first in a series of three ‘oud’ eau de parfums) and which specifically honours Assam agarwood. As a small batch artisanal house, Rogue Perfumery shuns the “crowd pleasing ambrox-laden ouds” so ubiquitous on store shelves and instead takes us to the heart of oud. Said to be ‘aloes’ in ancient times and interpreted as it was originally used in practices such as the Kama Sutra and Nirvana Sutra, Rogue Perfumery A’Oud Ancienne is a reimagination of how oud might have smelled a millennia ago when smoke from agarwood chip would rise from braziers.

This is a fragrance which immediately captures your attention. The initial experience is a blaze of vermillion and of cherry tobacco and cinnamon. None of these ingredients  are listed in the notes.  The sweetness certainly develops with the use of bitter almond and labdanum. From here Rogue Perfumery A’Oud Ancienne begins to reveal its leathery and animalic personality. As I dig my nose deeper to discover more, I smell a  distinctive “hormonal” accord which one can relate to the release of oxytocin (associated with love and libido). This aspect of the fragrance is complimented via the use of castoreum and oakmoss; think dark tanned nubuck leather as opposed to a soft suede. The strength of this is muted with the use of ylang adding a floralcy that balances the composition- slightly rugged, deep and certainly earthy but with a luminous green quality to it as well.

The scent is unique as it morphs and changes throughout its development. One moment there are hints of jasmine or orange blossom – slightly dirty synonymous with an afterglow.  Next the fresh piney and balsamic aspects pulse through, all below that deep heart of agarwood which keeps on orchestrating the composition.

Resinated wood by Manuel Cross

A’Oud Ancienne is an edgy perfume; wild and rugged but smooth and sweet; the heat of resinated wood is apparent throughout. Once again Manuel Cross demonstrates that he’s a trailblazer adept at the abstract and the flamboyant, vintage with a modern twist—all are hallmarks of his signature. Rogue Perfumery A’Oud Ancienne is the work of a perfumer who isn’t limited by boundaries and develops fragrances with passion, independence and is a true rebel with a cause.

Notes: Agarwood Assam, Blue Cypress, Labdanum, Castoreum accord, Amryis, Bitter Almond, Ylang, Oakmoss

  • Rogue Perfumery A’Oud Ancienne seems to employ hindi oud so I am not surprised it is sweet and smooth. It is one of three oud fragrances by Manuel Cross so excited to test it and others in the line. I am in US.

  • Cherry tobacco, cinnamon & oud? Count me in Must be a strikingly beautiful, same as with all Manuel’s work.

Thanks for the draw. Based in thr EU

  • Thanks for another review of Rogue Perfumery!

I’ve become a huge fan of this house after trying Bon Monsieur and Mousse Illuminee. I love Manuel’s style and creativity and look forward to trying A’Oud Ancienne!

I have to admit I am a fan of these infamous “crowd pleasing ambrox-laden ouds” but I am certain I will appreciate his unique take on Oud which I’m sure will shake up the industry a little again.

    Greetings from the UK!

  • You had me at “animalic, earthy, and leathery”. Anytime I learn that a perfumer is destined to re-create scents of old, I get excited. Being able to experience something from long ago gives me chills as it enables me to share a spiritual connection with the past. I can’t wait to smell the direction M. Cross takes this. Cheers!

  • Big fan of Rogue, in the EU. I loved Chypre Siam and Derviche, but it was Mousse Illuminee that blew my mind. Gorgeous stuff, sparkling, glittering even. I would love to get my nose on A’Oud Ancienne, sounds challenging and sensual, sweet and animalic, I am sure Manuel Cross can do this complex material justice. Hi from Italy!

  • Jason Jacomet says:

I love a good Oud, especially a rugged and animalic beauty!!! This sounds like it will be right up my alley!!! Please enter me in the draw!!! It sounds amazing!!! Thank you!!!

  • The fabulous notes of the fragrance and how unique they are strikes me. This fragrance must smell like something out of this world. It would be a magical experience to try it out. I don’t have a favorite Rogue fragrance because I never tried this brand but I would really love to one day. I live in Poland, EU.

  • ianbradleyandrews says:

This sounds incredible. I am already a fan of rogue so him adding a oud to the mix is super exciting

  • Michael Marquez says:

Cherry Tobacco, Oud, cinnamon and a leathery dry down…..

It sounds amazing and not for the faint of heart,

  • I’m a huge fan of Rogue Perfumery and currently my favorite is Chypre-Siam. “A’Oud Ancienne” must be truly unique, bold and evocative and what strikes me most about it is the fact that it’s a reimagination of “how oud might have smelled thousands of years ago”. Can’t wait to smell it! I live in Portugal, EU. Thank you!

  • Wow this sounds like a powerhouse scent.
    Perfect for fall.
I have never put my nose on a Rogue scent.

  • Anything from Manuel Cross is worth having, or at least trying. I sense this oud fragrance will be polarizing, all the more reason I really would like to get my nose on it. Thank you as always, Manuel Cross, you have been very generous with your giveaways. Good luck to everyone!

  • Rogue Perfumery has been on my ‘to sample’ list ever since I tried ‘Flora and Fauna’, which I find so lovely as to be intoxicating. I am very interested in the way Manuel Cross approaches ingredients, and would be thrilled to smell what he does with Oud!

  • I love oud, and I’ve been impressed by the Rogue fragrances I’ve smelled so far, especially Vetifleur and Mousse Illuminee. I live in New York, USA.

  • Thanks for the chance at winning a bottle. I’m in the US.

Whenever a new animalic oud fragrance pops up it highly peaks my interest. Chypre Siam is an awesome high quality fragrance at a great price point. I’m sure A’Oud Ancienne will be of the same high quality.

  • Sorohan Adriana says:

I like Rogue Perfumery Tuberose and Moss because I love tuberose. I still haven’t discovered a perfume with oud that I like, maybe this will create a positive impression on me considering the quality of Rogue Perfumery found in the perfumes of the house.I am from EU

  • Taleofarose says:

I’m a huge fan of oud, in any combination. Add Manuel Cross into the mix, and I’m sure it’s a marvel of a scent.

    I live in Portugal

  • I never thought Manuel Cross would venture into Oud territory since he’s so rooted in classic European perfumery. I’m exhilarated that I was wrong! I’m not usually a fan of what he describes as “crowd pleasing ambrox-laden ouds” and I tend to prefer the more natural ones. The addition of cherry tobacco sounds like a fantastic pairing to sweeten the oud. So far, my favourite Rogue is Chypre-Siam but after reading this, A’Oud Ancienne might take the throne later.
    I live in Denmark, EU.

  • I just love love love Rogue Perfumery, and I have Mousse Illuminee and Bon Monsieur and I love the idea behind the brand.
This one seems really amazing and it is nice that Manuel has used real oud in this. I think it is a stunning fragrance and I hope to win this.
    My favourite is Mousse Illuminee

  • What struck me was this perfume was described as, “an edgy perfume; wild and rugged but smooth and sweet; the heat of resinated wood is apparent throughout”. US

  • I’ve sampled a few of Rogue’s scents and been impressed (my favorite of these being Flora and Fauna), so now that Manuel is tackling oud, my favorite aromatic material, I’m excited to smell his take on this! Real Assam oud with hints of reds in cherry form sounds delightful. Best wishes from the US.

  • Karl!!! ❤️❤️❤️ Love your review!! I think I managed to leave a comment and somehow delete it all at the same time
Anyway, your wonderful words inspired me to make my fb purchase right away!
    Love Rogue! ❤️❤️

Notes: Agarwood Assam, Blue Cypress, Labdanum, Castoreum accord, Amryis, Bitter Almond, Ylang, Oakmoss. I am intrigued by the notes and that this fragrance does not follow traditional ouds. My favourite from this house is Flos mortis. Thanks a million from the UK

  • Bryant Worley says:

I really appreciate the thoughtfulness the perfumer put into how A’oud Acienne was composed. Although the main note is agarwood, the perfumer ‘blunted’ it (in my opinion) with the other notes, making it quite appealing and, possibly, more versatile – blue cypress adds sweetness, fruitiness and smokiness; Bitter almond provides a sweet, nutty, cherry-like smell, and Ylang provides a creaminess and florality to a fragrance.

An excellent choice of surrounding notes, and I definitely want to get my nose on this.

I live in Waldorf, Maryland, USA.

I am intrigued and curious about perfumers description. I would love to smell this on skin. A house that I have got no experience with I am afraid. Thanks a lot from the UK

  • I’m excited to see Manuel use Oud in his composition and how it blends in with his usual style.

  • This sounds intriguing, I am curious to see how far off the beaten path it goes! I love Bon Monsieur from Rogue. NV, USA.

  • I’m so excited to try Rogue’s take on an oud-centric fragrance. My favorite house, I loved the oud base in Derviche II. The descriptor of ‘wild and rugged but smooth and sweet’ hits every mark for what I love about Rogue. My favorite fragrance of Manuel’s is Flora & Fauna.

  • ajraccounts says:

I find it interesting that A’Oud Ancienne uses white flowers like ylang-ylang — I haven’t tried / read about tons of ouds, but that strikes me as not so common, and intrigues me. Several of Rogue Perfumery’s scents are on my “to sample” list! (But it just hasn’t happened yet, so I can’t name a favorite — though Chypre-Siam is the one I’ve been most interested in). I’m in CA, USA.

  • I like a wild perfume that can also be smooth and sweet at the same time. This sounds good!
    Thank you!

  • Indian oud/Assam oud can be pretty strong so to pull off a perfume such as Rogue Perfumery A’Oud Ancienne requires a great deal of skill and knowledge. Karl describes it as a rugged but sweet and smooth perfume. I haven’t tried anything by this brand, yet, but I love oud perfumes so I am sure I will like this one too, given its glowing review by Karl. Thanks for the review and draw – I am from the USA.

  • Unknown house for me, but I like the usage of unconventional materials and the Assam Oud’s animalic and leathery facets. From EU.

  • I am so intrigued by the floral aspects of this scent and how they enhance this “rugged yet smooth” perfume! I’ve enjoyed trying a number of scents from Rogue but Jasmine Antique is probably favorite so far. I like in the US.

  • That “hormonal accord” thing really got me curious! I usually associate the fuzzier, more skin/human-like fragrances with musk, but this oud-centric frag with balsamic, leathery and oakmossy notes truly sounds intriguing, and it might deliver the same effect.
I live in the EU and am unfamiliar with the house.

  • Manuel Cross is certainly inventive with a nose for nuance. I have a discovery set from Rogue Perfumery and I find some new facet in each scent every time I wear one. A’oud Ancienne seems to continue this. The use of oud in a non-ambrox scent is a welcome diversion. Animalic, leathery, and hormonal (!) are interesting attributes along with the woods and florals. My favorite from the discovery set is Mousse Illuminee. MD, USA.

  • ‘Rogue Perfumery A’Oud Ancienne is the work of a perfumer who isn’t limited by boundaries and develops fragrances with passion, independence and is a true rebel with a cause.’

Definitely something I would enjoy from the sound of it! Thank you for the draw and the review!

  • My heart skipped a beat when I saw the title of this post. I love Rogue, one of my absolute favorite brands (Mousse Illuminee and Champs Lunaires are my favorites)! I now I hear this is just the first, and there are two more out fragrances he’ll release…I’m so excited to try them. Ok, so I started reading this and didn’t know what to expect….then I see cinnamon and tobacco (both notes I love) and I was very surprised to be honest. I love almond, labdanum and piny notes too! The rest of the notes made sense later on…some floral aspects to balance these notes of castoreum and oud. Will this be my net full bottle from Rogue….we shall seeeee. Sampling first! I’m from Illinois, US.

  • PetaloDiCera says:

So intrigued by this description of Rogue’s take on oud! I’d love to try the evolution of this fragrance on my skin, with all its contrasts and suggestions. Such an inviting trip!
    (I’m in EU, Italy)

  • I was struck by your description of “wild and rugged but smooth and sweet”. I haven’t yet tried any perfumes from the brand, but I would really like to! Thank you for the review, writing from the EU.

  • Nice review Karl, I agree 100% with you regarding the necessity of another oud fragrances: Yes to anything that Manuel Cross creates, even it is for triplicate in oud case!. I think he is in state of grace, any scent is great and he is building the best perfume collection . A’Oud Ancienne wants to show or better, imagine, how oud might have smelled when agarwood chips were burned: animalic, earthy and leathery perhaps?. Sweet at the beginning that evolves with almond and labdanum( spanish, by the way??) and then the oud boom: leathery and animalic. So intriguing what you say about the release of the oxytocin. So good to tame the animal with flowers(ylang) and great that the perfume morphs and changes throughout its development. If this is the first oud fragrance of three, imagine what is to come next! I love Chypre Siam with my beloved keffir lime. I live in Spain, EU.

  • I love fragrances that are challenguing and I think I would totally love this. The vermillon, cherry tobbaco added to the animalic notes surely make Oud ancienne something really different and unique.
Vintage with a modern twist describes this fragrance at its best.
    USA here.
My favorite Rogue Perfumery fragrance is Bon Monsieur.

  • wandering_nose says:

Thank you Karl, I loved this review! Need to say Monsieur Cross’s creations never fail to pique my interest and A’Oud Anceinne does that in a spectacular way. An oud made different is what we need, especially from an artist like Manuel, “trailblazer adept at the abstract and the flamboyant”. A perfume which is edgy and wild, smooth and sweet with oud reminiscent of ancient oriental practices, and incorporating cherry tobacco, cinnamon, ylang-ylang, bitter almond and labdanum – a mature perfume lover’s heaven. I haven’t had the chance to try any of Rogue Perfumery creations as of yet. Thank you from the EU

  • Like the beginning of the article says…who needs another oud fragrance? The answer is me lol. that with the combo of cherry tobacco and cinnamon has me wondering. I’m sure it smells unique and those are fragrances that i’m looking forward to adding to my collection

  • Cherry tobacco, oud and leather yessssss, this sounds amazing. Guve me all the oud, I will never get enough. I haven’t sampled from this house yet but I’ve heard nothing but great things. Count me in…

  • Manuel Cross seems to have a knack for bold fragrances inspired by classic ingredients and designs. I love the concept for this perfume, hearkening back to an ancient use of oud, or at least a modern conception of that history. I didn’t expect the opening of this fragrance to include a combination of cherry tobacco and cinnamon (unlisted in the notes). A’Oud Ancienne sounds like it does have plenty of snarl and oomph, favoring oud, jasmine, and leather notes, but the “smooth and sweet” aspects of this fragrance are equally intriguing. I’d love to try this soon. Thanks for the great review, Karl!

I’m in the midwest, USA. My favorite Rogue fragrance is Mousse Illuminee.

  • Michael Prince says:

What interests me about Rogue Perfumery A’Oud Ancienne based on Karl’s review due to the small batch non traditional oud and leather based fragrance that sounds truly divine. I’ve heard so many great things about Rogue Perfumery and Manuel Cross and Karl has affirmed it. I haven’t tried anything from Rogue Perfumery, I don’t have a favorite. I’m from the USA.

  • As a fragrance enthusiast that has an appreciation for all the facets that oud has to offer, I am looking forward to Manuel’s artistic interpretation in his latest creation. I’m one that enjoys rebelliousness and thinking outside the box. After all, it’s exhilarating to go outside of the lines that can be limiting. …and it makes my olfactive journey that much more fun 😉

  • I had a sample of Chypre-Siam and I really enjoyed it. This new fragrance from Rouge seems like a really unique take on Oud that dances between light and dark. I’m from Colorado

  • Rogue perfumer Manuel cross is one of my favorites. I really like and bought Mousse Illuminee and Derviche 2 based on Karl’s review and A’Oud Ancienne seems it has some similarities
This oud sound great and unique

  • NituNicolae says:

Agarwood, Amryis and Castoreum? This must be a bold fragrances that I cannot wait to sample. Thank you for this opportunity and I hope to win. From Romania, EU.

  • I like the fact that A’oud ancienne is highlighting the Oud note in a way that is a bit different from the usual way. I have heard such good things about Manuel Cross and Rogue Perfumery and I am confident this is another good addition to the brand. I don’t have a favorite rogue perfumery fragrance yet.
