MIZU Floral Delusion X Rose Road of the perfumer

Independent artisanal perfumer Mason Hainey of MIZU paints his cosmos in botanical hues. He has always drawn sustenance from the natural world, and his olfactory compositions reflect this unshakable bond. The very name of his brand, MIZU – arises from his first visit to Japan while still in high school as a student ambassador: it was the first word his host family taught him, meaning ‘water’. Thus began a lifelong admiration and fascination with Japan and all things Japanese, including aesthetics.

A born creative, Mason has pursued several artistic venues. He was attending art college for a time, then transitioned to a foray into fashion and his own line of clothing at age 19, utilizing vintage Japanese fabrics. As his business grew, Mason felt restless and unsettled. The inner city didn’t suit. In addition to his custom-made textiles, Mason began to create candles (something he had enjoyed making as a child) – which kept him in touch with botanical beauty and the soothing qualities of essential oils. His love of nature and natural materials blossomed into a desire to compose fragrances based upon the elegance of raw essences.

These days, the perfumer finds himself happily ensconced in Rhode Island (aka the Ocean State) and proximal to both forest and ocean. When I learned that he had created a new fragrance, I awaited its arrival eagerly. Even more so when it became clear that this fragrance, Floral Delusion, was a collaboration with Rose Road – a favored supplier of high-quality rose oil.

still from Dreams Sunshine in the Rain Akira Kurosawa 1990

Floral Delusion is inspired by the age-old tale of the auspicious and happy marriage of two foxes (Kitsune) – a Kitsune Wedding. The brief vignette from Japanese filmmaker Akira Kurosawa’s 1990 film Dreams – entitled Sunshine Through the Rain – exerted further influence, in which a very young boy happens upon a kitsune wedding in the woods (after having been warned by his mother not to play in the forest when it is sunny and raining, because the foxes have their wedding procession on such days and detest being observed). It is revealed that the kitsune live under the rainbow (as with many cultures, the fox/kitsune may be male or female – and is a well-known trickster).

The spirit of the fox is wise,
a trickster wrapped in apt disguise,
with nine or less tails, she gains power
that grow as age comes, hour by hour. ~ excerpt from Kitsune, by Lillian Rose

MIZU Floral Delusion X Rose Road opens with the brilliant verdant clarion provided by shiso; a Japanese mint imbued with a complex cinnamon/mint/caraway scent profile. Aligning shiso with the equally earthy, terpenic cannabis (or hemp) oil feels utterly intuitive, accented with the bright sulfuric tart/sweetness of grapefruit; some say that cannabis’ strongly herbal quality has a touch of bitterness (not unlike pink grapefruit). Rose smooths over rough edges, as she is wont to do – while cassie flower contributes many facets: fruity, floral, hay-like, dryly herbal, woody, softly animalic and green. Sandalwood and frankincense further echo a Japanese motif, with their attendant devotional aspects – deeply dry and soothing, grounding in character. It appears (to my nose) that the petrichor accord which Mason has constructed is significantly inflected with another prominent member of the mint family: patchouli, redolent of damp earth, the mushroom-strewn forest floor after a sunshower. Somewhere deep within, there exist stirrings of the fox and vixen wedding party; the floral/animalic/incense-laden trail of their ghostly nuptials in the woods.

MIZU Floral Delusion X Rose Road flirts with blossoms. The fragrance’s main thrust, for me – is its accompanying underlying mysticism. I find it an intricate, haunting aromatic allegory.

Notes: shiso leaf, cannabis, grapefruit, rose absolute, cassie flower, Australian sandalwood, frankincense, petrichor accord

Sample kindly provided by the perfumer – many thanks!  My nose is my own…

  • Idas review entices me to try this masterpiece! I’ve yet to try any fragrances with the note of cannabis but this sounds interesting. From ma, USA

  • This sounds so beautiful. I love the note of shiso in the few perfumes I have smelled it in, and I bet it is gorgeous with grapefruit. I have not tried any MIZU candles, but I would love to try MIZU Floral Delusion X Rose Road. I live in WV, USA

  • never tried anything from MIZU, but hearing about the high quality rose oil and really love all the references that tell this earthly story of a fox. i want to know if it smells how i imagine this scene. from Los Angeles, CA x

  • Ida!!! ❤️❤️❤️ This review is Beautiful! Floral Delusion sounds Divine! I Love Kurasawa’s Dreams!!! That was among my favorite movies in high school! Dreams and Kobayashi’s Kwaidan are The Best! ❤️ I would be SO excited & grateful to experience Mason Hainey’s interpretation of Sunshine Through The Rain (as that scene is dear to my heart). Thank you for the Wonderful opportunity!!! ❤️ USA

  • I really enjoyed reading up on the inspirations on this perfume, and how Ida brought in the notes of it to create a beautiful imagery of the story of the kitsune.

  • I actually adore this Kurosawa film “Dreams” with its vignettes. The one after this, “The Peach Blossom Orchard” devastated me as a teen, Gagaku Etanraku is seared into my heart. But to go back the perfume and the Kitsune…yes!!! And I have been wanting a Rose and Shiso blend!! Finally. It’s here. I’m thoroughly excited!! Grateful to read this.

  • This is my first time hearing about MIZU somehow! I lived in Japan for a time and enjoy Ida’s description of kitsune wedding, especially by referencing one of the short films from Kurosawa’s Dreams. And of course the scent itself sounds like an excellent interpretation of the concept 🙂
    Best wishes from the US!

  • I have never experienced any MIZU perfumes or candles but Ida’s review of Floral Delusion X Rose Road makes the scent sound really appealing in addition to the general aesthetics of the brand. I appreciate the fascination with Japan and the interesting information about Kitsume wedding.
    Greetings from Maryland, US.

  • Not a US resident but I want to live a comment anyway. I love the inspiration of the perfume. Since I visited Japan, I was always fascinated by Kitsune. It’s so cool that the story of Two Foxes was an inspiration for the creator.

  • The mystical quality of MIZU Floral Delusion X Rose Road appeals to me, as it does to Ida. The wedding of the foxes, kitsune, as the inspiration behind MIZU Floral Delusion X Rose Road is interesting. Being a lover of Japanese culture and simple but elegant aesthetics, I’d love to try MIZU Floral Delusion X Rose Road. I haven’t tried candles or perfumes by this brand, yet. I am also interested in how shiso would smell like in a perfume. Thanks for the review and draw. From USA.

  • Interesting review, Ida. I enjoyed reading about Kitsune and you remind me to re-watch some Kurosawa films. MIZU Floral Delusion X Rose Road sounds like a complex floral with a lot of character. I immediately noticed Shiso in the notes list; I’m most familiar with its role in DSH Wasabi Shiso, which sounds like a very different fragrance than the rose, wood, and petrichor composition Hainey designed in Floral Delusion X Rose Road. I’d love to try this to note how the shiso, grapefruit, and cannabis notes interact. Thanks for the coverage, Ida.

I’m in the midwest, USA. I haven’t tried any MIZU products yet.

I’ve been interested in trying a fragrance made by Mason since I read about how incense in Japan influenced his style as a perfumer. This fragrance seems like something I would like to try. I’m interested to see what its earthy aspects are like, and I want to see how the patchouli is used in combination with the earthiness. I live in the U.S.A. I haven’t had a chance yet to try anything from this company.

Thanks for the great review Ida!

This is such a neat composition – love the story line of the myterious kitsune wedding. I want to watch this Korsawa short.

Such a beautiful contrast of green notes and florals. Color me intrigued.
