“To Sherlock Holmes she is always The Woman. I have seldom heard him mention her under any other name. In his eyes she eclipses and predominates the whole of her sex…there was but one woman to him, and that woman was the late Irene Adler, of dubious and questionable memory.” ~ Arthur Conan Doyle, A Scandal in Bohemia

Sherlock, A Scandal in Belgravia TV Series 2012 with Benedict Cumberbatch as Holmes and Laura Pulver as Irene Adler

Probably one of my favorite characters in the Sherlock Holmes stories is the infamously beautiful, brilliant and cunning Irene Adler – an operatic contralto who has graced the stage of La Scala. In Arthur Conan Doyle’s A Scandal in Bohemia, Irene outwits Sherlock and rescues her reputation (as well as that of the King of Bohemia) in the process. Irene is deliciously seductive yet subtle, and very much her own person: custom made to personify award-winning natural perfumer Mandy Aftel’s newest fragrance, Aftelier Perfumes Boheme Confection.

Aftelier Perfumes Boheme Confection is a hauntingly lovely perfume which weds decadent, earthy facets of aged patchouli with the complex floral profile of pink lotus absolute: a rich, creamy, honeyed, dense aroma – spicily verdant on top and delectably fruity and worldly in the drydown.

Echoes along its path retain the vestiges of old-world Austro-Hungarian Empire pâtisserie – a dollop of strawberry confiture, murmurs of marzipan, the chocolate layered in a Dobos torte, surrounded by crushed almonds and encased in vanillic shell of burnt caramel – such dainties as would have been prized by the Victorian inhabitants of London’s 221B Baker Street, as well as the regents of the Hapsburg monarchy. Benzoin’s notes of vanilla and cinnamon act as a perfect fixative for prolonging the elegant gourmandise of Aftelier Perfumes Boheme Confection, especially when in cahoots with Peru balsam. Maltol contributes a pure candied sweetness – while sarsaparilla’s rooty spiciness adds a delicate touch of indole. At first glance, Boheme Confection might appear toothachingly sugared and over the top by its notes alone, but this is far from the case. It’s surprisingly sophisticated and charming without revealing all of its secrets at once – much like the mysterious Irene Adler herself.

2022 has been an exciting year for natural perfumery; some truly wonderful compositions have surfaced and given great pleasure these past months, and Aftelier Perfumes Boheme Confection stands amongst them. It is an intelligent nuanced gourmand, replete with persuasive, endearing contrasting elements. Mandy Aftel feels that a solid perfume format is well-suited to this fragrance, and I heartily agree. For a brief time, a limited supply of Boheme Confection will be available as a liquid perfume, after which it will only exist as a solid.  She was kind enough to send me a sample of each; while the fragrance is lovely in either form, there is something about the solid which sings in a manner which liquid does not – a rounder, fuller experience, albeit less ebullient than its kin. I treasure Boheme Confection for its ethereal innuendo, like a ravishingly spun legato phrase.

Notes: Pink Lotus, Patchouli, Bitter Almond, Sarsaparilla, Strawberry, Chocolate, Peru Balsam, Benzoin, Methyl Anthranilate, Maltol, Vanillin.

  • I love pink lotus as well as sarsaparilla in perfume and all the talk of beautiful delicate pastries has me drooling. I haven’t been lucky enough to try any of Mandy Aftels creations yet but if I did I’d guess my favorite would be Cepes and Tuberose. I live in Missouri, USA.

  • I love Mandy Aftel’s work and recently began reading her book, Fragrant, which she even so kindly signed for me. I noticed she had announced the arrival of this new creation on her FB page a couple of days ago, describing it as ‘dirty decadent & dessert-like’. It would be a delight to add her Boheme Confection to my perfume library. I have a bottle of her luxurious Ancient Resins body oil and it’s one of my favorite things on my perfume shelve(s). Almost empty and needing to be re ordered soon. Canada

  • Sarsaparilla!? Count me in! I found it interesting that Ida commented that she prefers the solid version. I usually find them low projecting and can only smell them if I put my nose on skin. I wonder if I should break out of this habit and try something new, I formed this opinion many years ago.

I live in Houston, TX and I’ve yet to have the pleasure of experiencing an Aftelier Perfume.

  • I am interested in the Pink Lotus. I understand the the preference for the solid. My favorite Aftelier Perfume is Antique Ambergis.

  • The fabulous details and really intriguing information appealed to me. I live in Trzebnica, Poland, EU. I never tried this house but I think that Aftelier Perfumes Boheme Confection is for sure fantastic.

  • An intelligently nuanced Dobos cake captured in a fragrance! I love gourmands and I feel like the options are almost infinite, with the condition that it should stay cliché-free.
I am sure Aftelier Perfumes managed that with their craft and the choice to reference quite an exotic “gourmanderie”, which I personally adore.

  • I am curious to smell Mandy’s new perfume, and I am especially drawn in by “ sarsaparilla’s rooty spiciness”. Mandy’s scents seem to never be overly sweet, there is almost always an element of surprise even with traditionally sweet perfumes that use vanilla, rose, etc. My favorites are Secret Garden and Fig, Fig smells like a cool librarian that walked out of her house after being in a room with lit incense. I am writing from Los Angeles, CA.

I loved Ida’s connecting Boheme Confection to the delights found in an Old World patisserie, as the description made me want to try Mandy’s new creation all the more. My favorite Aftelier perfume at the moment is Oud Luban. I live in Virginia, USA.

  • You have a beautiful way with words! I love that you found subtle differences between the liquid and the solid. Since I am a sophisticated gourmand I just know know I will adore this masterpiece!

  • I enjoyed reading the gourmand focused description, and learning that it has Pink Lotus, as I love Mandy’s Pink Lotus! Also, Cacao is another favorite!

I’m in the desert, near Palm Springs.

  • I enjoyed reading the gourmand focused description – quite captivating.

I also like knowing that Pink Lotus is part of this scent, as it is one of my favorites of the Afteliers. Cacao is another favorite!

I love the idea that this is a sweet gourmand, but balanced and spicy, woody, and earthy. I love patchouli and lotus in their individual state, so the idea of them coming together sounds wonderful! I’m a big fan of Mandy Aftel–she is probably my favorite natural perfumer. I love her Violet Ambrosia and Tango. Thanks so much for the generous draw–I’m in the US (Colorado).

  • A fabulous review as always ! The name of the scent alone creates an ethereal scent scape in my mind. Mandy is a true alchemist and all that’s I’ve sampled from her line was nothing short of fabulous.
Would love to smell this one !
Thanks for the draw. Based in the EU

  • The complexity and mystery of the described composition is so intriguing. I love a scent that keeps me guessing. Pink lotus is a dream in combination with honeyed sweetness, wow! I live in Idaho and have yet to try any of Mandy’s creations but Cepes and tuberose as well as vanilla smoke and fig sound amazing. But truly all her creations sound mesmerizing! Fingers crossed! Thank you!

  • I find patchouli to be an excellent backdrop for floral, delicate, and confectionary notes; this review really painted a picture of sultry decadence on a heavily wooded estate. Very inticing and I long to try it for myself! My favorite of Aftelier Perfumes’ offerings is the Memento Mori. I’m from Birmingham, Alabama.

Notes: Pink Lotus, Patchouli, Bitter Almond, Sarsaparilla, Strawberry, Chocolate, Peru Balsam, Benzoin, Methyl Anthranilate, Maltol, Vanillin. I am intrigued by the notes especially Patchouli and Chocolate being my favourite notes. I am afraid I have got no experience with this house. Thanks a million from the UK

Notes: Pink Lotus, Patchouli, Bitter Almond, Sarsaparilla, Strawberry, Chocolate, Peru Balsam, Benzoin, Methyl Anthranilate, Maltol, Vanillin. I am fascinated by the notes this sounds like a magical concoction perfect for winter. A house that I have not tried anything by. Thanks a lot from the UK

  • Irene Adler is one of my favorite characters. Her feminity and personal power and self awareness always made me admire her. Boheme Confection seems like a perfect scent for Irene.
    Hugs from Europe

  • Mandy Aftel is a master perfume blender and it’s astounding that she creates her intricate compositions using natural compounds. I’ve tried a few of her patchouli based scents and I love what she does with that sometimes overbearing note. I’m not familiar with pink lotus but it’s description as a honeyed floral sounds like it would pair perfectly with the mostly gourmand notes. Favorite Aftelier scent is Memento Mori. MD, USA.

  • I am definitely intrigued by a fragrance based on Irene Adler. I am generally ambivalent about gourmands, but Ida, your review makes this a must-try. I really enjoyed how you combined the gourmand descriptions with the musical descriptions. Astonishingly, I haven’t yet tried a Mandy Aftel fragrance although I would really like to! So I don’t yet have a favourite. Thank you for the review, writing from the EU.

  • I liked how Ida describes the qualities of Boheme Confection – “Irene is deliciously seductive yet subtle, and very much her own person: custom made to personify award-winning natural perfumer Mandy Aftel’s newest fragrance, Aftelier Perfumes Boheme Confection.” Also since I am not a big fan of gourmand perfumes, it was nice to hear that this is not a sugary gourmand, but a very sophisticated perfume. I haven’t tried a solid perfume so I am curious how solid and liquid versions differ and how Mandy decided that this is better as a solid. I haven’t tried this brand so no favorites, yet. Thanks for the draw and review. From USA.

  • Ida!!! ❤️❤️❤️ Mandy Aftel is one of my Absolute Favorite Fragrance Artists/Perfumers! When there is a new Aftelier release, it’s an event for us! Personally, I’m a die-hard fan of her solid perfumes, so this is extra exciting! I would be so happy to be a lucky winner (though I’m sure we will experience Boheme Confection no matter what)! ❤️

  • The pairing of patchouli with pink lotus over a sweet gourmand base intrigues me, especially with the mention that it’s not as sweet as the notes make it out to be! So far, my favorite Aftelier perfume is Orchid (in the solid variant). Best wishes from NJ, USA.

  • I’m interested in the gourmand touches…Mandy style! Ida’s review makes it sound so good, as I hadn’t really considered lotus flower before. I love in the USA. My favorite is Parfum Prive. Thanks for the giveaway!

  • The central patchouli and pink lotus combo in Boheme Confection sounds wonderful. Aged patchouli is complex, dynamic stuff, and it’s a note that’s grown on me as I’ve discovered how varied it can be. It also has some chocolaty aspects that lend itself to gourmands. The note list on Boheme Confection had me thinking this would be extremely sweet, but Ida pointed out it’s a restrained, “intelligent nuanced gourmand,” all with natural materials. Thanks for the review, Ida.

I’m in the midwest, USA. I haven’t tried any Aftelier Perfumes fragrances.

  • I’ve been reading her books including the updated Essence and Alchemy…but I have not yet smelled any of her perfumes. I long to do this though. The Pink Lotus is something new to me, I have only smelled the blue lotus in two blends. Thank you for the giveaway opportunity.

  • That Dobosh cake…..yum. I love patchouli, especially with a touch of chocolate. Sometimes I spray a patchouli with my Over the Chocolate Shop. This sounds decadent. I am not familiar with this line, but would love to sample this. Thanks for the chance. USA.

  • Patchouli has had this reputation as being too earthy and even my friends would say it reminds them of Grandmas closet. I still have to smell aged Patchouli as Mandy would say.. her version can convert a Patchouli snob. Pink lotus smells earthy and a bit spicy, thanks to the absolute but unfortunately I still have to appreciate a real pink lotus blossom soon. These two earthy materials combined with gourmand notes producing a dessert reminiscent of an Austro-Hungarian pattiserie surely piqued my interest. Imagine all the sweetness coming forth as fruits from the earth. I am a definite fan of Mandy Aftel and I still have not found an equal to her Wild Roses which never fails to bring a smile to my face. Sending all the love from sunny Manila, Philippines.

  • Pink lotus sounds amazing! And the honeyed description makes me want to try this scent even more. This sounds like I would be a big fan

  • I love how this fragrance combines the hints of floral with honey to create a seductive smell. I find this review to incite my curiosity in the raw emotions that I will feel smelling it. I definitely want to be able to smell this once in my life. I live in NYC, USA.

  • sephrenia300 says:

Lovely review Ida! What appealed to me in Ida’s review is the idea of a seductive yet subtle gourmand that is surprisingly sophisticated and charming and not overly sweet. I generally don’t get along with gourmands, so a more subtle one that centers on the rich, creamy, dense and complex floral profile of pink lotus absolute sounds much more up my alley than a traditional one.

I live in the US. My favorite Aftelier Perfumes fragrance is definitely Parfum Privé, her most decadent fragrance yet.

  • Thanks for the fantastic review Ida.

I loved reading about this gourmand, that posseses the ethereal quality of not being overbearing, yet is seductive and alluring. It’s very neat to see that this is an aged patchouli and lotus root fragrancec – a combination that I would not have thought possible.

I have not had a chance to smell any of Mandy’s fragrances.

    Cheers from WI, USA
