The clarity of experiencing the joy of the moment and being in harmony is a feeling that we should never take for granted. When we are in flow with our surroundings our world feels enhanced, and we feel a truly blissful state of being. Hima Jomo taps into this sense of well-being. The brand concept is based upon explorations and cites in its journal the escapades of Alexandra David-Néel who became the first western woman to enter the Tibetan city of Lhasa. Her story is profoundly moving and well worth discovering.

Hima Jomo Summer In Paro fuses the primitive natural environment of the Himalayas with the modern techniques of haute French perfumery. The brand founded by Vittoria Jiaxin Liu currently has four scents dedicated to specific seasons and locations. All fragrances have been created in collaboration with perfumer Delphine Thierry of Inspiration Libre, who is known for Lubin Akkad and Masque Milano TerrAlba amongst others. The collective vision is in using a high percentage of natural ingredients whose roughness is sublimated and a fusion between exploration and crafting of raw materials makes for scents, which stand out in terms of both originality and quality.

Hima Jomo Summer in Paro goes completely against the grain of ‘typical’ summer fragrances. Paro, meaning, ‘The Castle on the Jewel’ is in the western part of Bhutan, and home to the famous ‘Tiger’s Nest Monastery’ a focal point of the region, built in 1692, it sits on the cliff face in the Paro valley. Hima Jomo Summer in Paro is a tribute to this iconic location and is a golden nectarous aroma which is a complex amalgamation of resins and floral aspects.

Image of the Tiger’s Nest Monastery, Wikimedia.

From the outset we are met with coniferous evergreen trail of Nishtar which gives a rich and smoky nuance this mingles with petitgrain and Timur pepper (from Nepal) to create a slightly bitter vibrancy to enliven the senses, whilst there is a honeyed aspect that runs from top to base. The clashing of green versus sweeter notes creates a fresh but slightly balmy effect on the skin reminiscent of the location, the beehives, tree trunks and prophetic aspects clearly transcribed.

The heart of Hima Jomo Summer in Paro reflects the natural raw materials native to the Himalayas. Osmanthus amplifies the slightly honeyed opening and creates a pillowy soft aura and a peachy fruity touch. The benzoin, amyris and labdanum produce a textured and golden glow which is the hallmark of the scent, and it lingers throughout the wearing. Fir balsam, sandalwood and patchouli  bring an earthy, warm, and creamy depth and they link seamlessly with the associated notes to complete a smooth and comforting base. One can almost sense a soft incense wafting through the trees, the golden beams of a sunlit evening piercing through the monastery the soft sound of a horse’s hooves trudging and resins mingling in the mountain air.

Hima Jomo Summer in Paro is a fragrance with a trailing light touch, a burnished aroma of woods blending softly with sweet tones. The perfume feels free from conventions, and it seems to have been created as a contradiction of the market laden sugary sweet ambers of recent times. A beautiful and relaxed scent which whispers rather than shouts.

  • I was not aware of Hima Jomo until today. What has me interested in trying this is that the review states, “Hima Jomo Summer in Paro goes completely against the grain of ‘typical’ summer fragrances”. US

I’m most interested in natural raw materials native to the Himalayas. I was not aware of Huma Jomo until this beautiful review. I live in EU, Croatia

  • Summer in Paro sounds like a perfect meditation fragrance. I enjoyed reading about, and seeing the picture of, the Tiger’s Nest Monastery. Congratulations Hima Jomo on winning best of show. Thanks for another awesome review and draw. Mich USA

The part I liked most about Karl’s review is his description “One can almost sense a soft incense wafting through the trees, the golden beams of a sunlit evening piercing through the monastery the soft sound of a horse’s hooves trudging and resins mingling in the mountain air.” I must admit, I was not aware of Hima Jomo!

  • Summer in Paro is inspired by Bhutan and given the notes, it seems like an apt tribute to Bhutan. There is a high percentage of naturals and the composition employs smoky and woody notes including sandalwood. It also seems like a novel composition that is unlike others in the market. Thanks for the draw. I am in US.

So many summer-oriented scents fall back on either citrus or aquatic notes, both of which can get boring, that this sounds like a super-interesting change of pace. Karl’s description makes it sound balanced and properly understated for the hot weather. I don’t recall hearing about Hima Jomo, but this sounds great. I live in the US in North Carolina.

  • “It reflects the natural raw materials native to the Himalayas.” I would to experience that. Not aware of the brand.

    Hi from Portugal

  • Karl!!! ❤️❤️❤️ Intriguing review!!! I must try this fragrance! The materials sound wonderful and reading this is great: “the perfume feels free from conventions, and it seems to have been created as a contradiction of the market laden sugary sweet ambers of recent times.”
While I’ve never been to Bhutan, I have traveled on the Tibetan plateau. The scent experience is so unique! I wonder if Summer in Paro would recall some of these memories? Thank you for the wonderful opportunity! I hadn’t heard of this brand until your reporting! ❤️ USA

  • Hima Jomo Summer in Paro seems to be a delightful perfume, from the listed notes and Karl’s review. I understand the notes and scents mentioned and the ambience of the place, having trekked in Bhutan though I never visited the temple mentioned in Karl’s review. Unfortunately I haven’t tried Hima Jimi before. I would love to try this perfume as it seems very elegant. Thanks for the review and draw. From USA.

  • O find the notes of the fragrance the most interesting based on Karl’s review. I’m not aware of Hima Jomo. I live in Poland, EU.

  • Thanks for this interesting article Karl!

I haven’t heardfrom Hima Jomo until now, so I appreciate your brief introduction to the brand and the perfumers!

What really piqued my interest was that Summer in Paro isn’t a typical summer fragrance. I often avoid the typical aquatic and citrus kinds of fragrance groups and try to find other styles that are more unique and innovative.
As a fan of green fragrances, the clashing of green versus sweet notes in Summer in Paro that creates a fresh but slightly balmy effect sounds absolutely amazing! I can’t wait to try it!

    Greetings from the UK!

  • I’ve never personally had the pleasure of trying any Hima Jomo fragrances, but I’ve seen the house mentioned a few times in recent articles. I like how this fragrance isn’t up in your face when you wear it, more of a “glow” and sometimes that’s exactly what I’m looking for. Thank you so much for the giveaway and good luck to everyone, I hope to try this house very soon!

  • I loved the concept behind of Hima Jomo and how inspiring is Alexandra David-Néel.
I think Summer In Paro is one fragrance that I would adore because of the Osmanthus and the raw materials this fragrance has. It sounds so intriguing and captivating, I hope I smell this one soon.

  • Based on Karl’s review, this perfume is exactly my type – earthy, smooth, warm and creamy, free from conventions and a contradiction to recent sugary sweet ambers… Amazing!

Notes: Timur Pepper (from Nepal), petitgrain, honey, osmanthus, benzoin, amyris, fir balsam, sandalwood, patchouli, labdanum. I am intrigued by the notes especially timur pepper, honey, sandalwood, Patchouli and labdanum. A wonderful review by Karl the subtlety of this fragrance really stands out. This is a house that I am not familiar with but I am intrigued by the notes and concept. Thanks a million from the UK

  • Summer in Paro, earthy, smoky and woody like the Himalayas. I would like this experience! From EU.

  • Nice review Karl! First time I´ve heard of Hima Jiwo was in your report “best of show” where I learned that the bran name means‘Holy Mother’ in Tibetan. It is amazing that the inspiration come from explorations and cites in the Alexandra David-Néel diaries (first western woman to enter in Lhasa!!!). So paying homage to the natural beauty of the Himalaya mountains in the goal of the brand. Here, using mostly naturals, recreats the Paro valley with its complex amalgamation of resins and floral aspects. Coniferous, petitgrain and Timur pepper is an amazing cold and smoky opening. Osmanthus with resins lingers through the wearing.Th best is tthat he scent whispers rather than shouts and is very far from sweet and amber trends. Great. I live in Spain, EU.

This is the first time I hear about Hima Jomo and their blend of natural elements from Himalaya and modern techniques of French perfumery sounds very interesting.
Also, reading about Summer in Paro brought a kind of serenity onto me: I could almost envision the golden glow of a summer sunset in the mountains, the cool and refreshing stillness of the air and the fragrant natural elements, flowers, fruit, resins and earth mingled. Very poetic.
I live in the EU and would love to win this.

  • My favorite part of the review is: “One can almost sense a soft incense wafting through the trees, the golden beams of a sunlit evening piercing through the monastery the soft sound of a horse’s hooves trudging and resins mingling in the mountain air.”. WOW! sounds great!. I have never heard of the brand before, i will need to check them out. I am from USA, thank you!

Petitgrain is an interesting one, I have become familiar with it ever since I aquired Lair du desert Marocain from Taur perfumes.Summer in paro on the other hand sounds like I am going on a journey, climbing mountains and visiting temples. Excited for the giveaway. EU

  • I am just now finding out about this line! Honey might be my favorite note of all so naturally it makes me want to try this. USA

  • wandering_nose says:

Thank you Karl for this fantastic review! Hima Jomo happen to be the brand that caught my instant and almost undivided attention while reading the articles dedicated to Esxence 2022. I was smitten by the design of their bottles and the way they presented their fragrances at Esxence. So close to nature, as if immersed in and emerging from it at the same time. The natural ingredients and the rawness of the materials used in Summer in Paro corresponds perfectly with the concept of the fragrance in terms of the location it is dedicated to. I absolutely love the notes and I would be more than happy to try this perfume. Thank you from Dublin, Ireland, EU

  • The himilayas are an intriguing range. I am fascinated by the history there. This sent seems to linger rather than scream. Sounds like a perfect representation of the area. In maryland.

  • I appreciate Hima Jomo’s commitment to using raw materials native to the Himalayas. The overall golden aura to the composition seems due to the osmanthus with the warm resiny benzoin and amyris providing support. The woody and earthy fir balsam, sandalwood and patchouli bring to mind the silent, contemplative forests of the mountain. This is my first exposure to Hima Jomo and Summer in Paro sounds delightful. Im in MD, USA.

  • This sounds incredible. I haven’t heard of Hima Jomo, except for reading here. I would love to try this based on your description of flowery, textured forests. Thanks for the review, writing from the EU.

  • AleksCipri says:

I was very intrigued by Hima Jomo when I learned about them from previous Esxence posts. I really love their story and their esthetic. I have to sample these fragrances. Karl’s review of Summer In Paro got me really interested in this fragrance. I love peppery and incensy fragrances and a combination with fir balsam and sweet notes here sounds really good. I’m from Illinois, US.

  • I’m very much looking forward to trying out this fragrance which I wasn’t unfamiliar with. I love the perfume Castana which was created by Delphine Thierry for Cloon Keen and generally I appreciate the sort of transparency of her perfumes. “The author described this scent as “A beautiful and relaxed scent which whispers rather than shouts” and this statement really appeals to me.
Many thanks for this draw. I live in France.

It was the last day of Esxence when we finally arrived at this stand, so we did not have much time to learn more about it, just to try it on the blotters. And I just love it. Thank you, Karl, for telling us more about the history and concept.

This sounds good! I think we are all fed up with the fragrances released nowadays following the same pattern and this seems to have some originality. Thanks!

  • I heard of Hima Jomo via the review of Esxence 2022. Summer in Paro fuses the primitive natural enviroment of the himalayas with the modern techniques of haute french perfumery. Based on Karl’s review, this is an atypical summer fragrance that is not a sugary sweet amber. It has a level of complexity from the resins and floral aspects of the fragrance. I would love to try the offerings from Hima Jomo.
