Aedes de Venustas Sueño Latino Review (Gabriela Chelariu) 2025 + Lush Jungle Giveaway

Aedes de Venustas Sueño Latino review

Aedes de Venustas Sueño Latino by Olya Bar

Since opening its doors in 1995 Aedes de Venustas stands as a beacon of niche perfume artistry, as a New York boutique and its fragrance line launch in 2012, the house—founded by Robert Gerstner and Karl Bradl—has honored the Latin phrase Aedes de Venustas, meaning “Temple of Beauty,” with scents that are bold, evocative, and deeply sensory. Their 2021 relaunch, reintroducing seven iconic fragrances in sleek, peacock-blue fluted bottles, marked a new chapter, celebrating their Christopher Street roots. Now, in 2025, Aedes unveils Sueño Latino, a fragrance that transports us to a realm where lush rainforests meet vibrant urban jungles, crafted by Firmenich’s Principal Perfumer Gabriela Chelariu. This fruity-leather beauty is not “another tropical scent” but a dreamlike fantasy, pulsing with the rhythm of Latin America’s soul.

Close your eyes and imagine the jungle awakening, stepping into a dense, emerald rainforest just after a downpour. The air is heavy with moisture, thick with the scent of wet earth and glistening foliage. Droplets cling to broad palm leaves, their surfaces shimmering under dappled sunlight filtering through the Amazonian canopy. This is the world of Sueño Latino, a fragrance that captures the primal heartbeat of nature intertwined with the electric pulse of urban vitality. As co-founder Karl Bradl aptly says to Michelyn, “At the end of the day, fragrance itself is a dream. You close your eyes, and you disappear.”

The scent is an olfactory mirage, blending the raw, untamed essence of the jungle with the vibrant sophistication of Latin American culture—think Mexican architect Luis Barragán’s hot pink walls juxtaposed against blooming birds of paradise, or the sultry rhythm of salsa echoing through a humid night. It’s not a postcard cliché of piña coladas and palm trees but a hazy, intoxicating vision where the warmth of damp air lingers on your skin, and every breath is thick with life.

Aedes de Venustas Sueño Latino opens with an exhilarating burst, like the first notes of a salsa band striking up at dusk. Brazilian red pepper and Peruvian pink pepper, the latter extracted using Firmenich’s innovative Firgood® technology, explode with a spicy, citrusy vibrancy. The pink pepper, zesty and fruity, feels like biting into a ripe, sun-warmed berry, its effervescence cutting through the humid air. These spices dance alongside plummy and fleshy davana, its herbal-fruity warmth evoking overripe fruit fallen to the forest floor, and bergamot zest, which sparkles like sunlight glinting off wet leaves. The opening is alive, electric, and slightly sharp, as if the jungle itself is exhaling its vitality.

At the heart, the fragrance deepens into a lush, creamy embrace. Rosa mango, juicy and radiant, conjures the sensation of sinking your teeth into a perfectly ripe fruit, its sweetness tempered by the verdant, milky richness of fig. The fig note is not overly sweet but textural, like the soft pulp of the fruit mingling with the damp moss of the forest floor. This heart is a tropical reverie, where the air feels saturated with the scent of overripe fruit and dewy greenery, a moment of stillness amidst the jungle’s pulse.

The base is where Sueño Latino reveals its soul, grounding the fragrance in a luxurious, earthy elegance. Mysore sandalwood evokes a watery forest floor, smooth and creamy, like polished wood slick with rain. Guaiac wood from Paraguay adds a smoky, resinous depth, while fresh olibanum sap—a nod to Aedes’ signature incense—infuses a faint, sacred smokiness, reminiscent of rituals performed under the canopy. Patchouli brings an earthy, mossy richness, as if you’re brushing against damp undergrowth, and suede musk feels like soft leather against your skin, warm and intimate. Amber glows like embers in the night, adding a radiant warmth that lingers, while a whisper of musk ties the composition together, leaving a velvety, addictive trail.

Gabriela Chelariu describes her work here as “very lush, very rich, contrasted with wetness and earthiness.” Unlike traditional tropical scents that lean heavily into sweet, solar notes, this composition is a study in balance—a fruity-leather creation that feels both wild and refined. The use of Firgood® technology to extract pink pepper ensures a vibrant, multifaceted note that elevates the opening, while the interplay of creamy fruits and resinous woods creates a texture that’s as tactile as it is olfactory. Chelariu avoids the cliché of overt sweetness, instead crafting a scent that feels like a dream state, where the humidity of the jungle meets the sophistication of urban nights. It’s a scent that blooms in warmth, making it ideal for summer evenings or sultry days when you want to feel transported. The drydown, with its vanillic amber and leathery suede, feels like a lingering memory of a night spent dancing under the stars, the air thick with possibility.

True to Aedes de Venustas’ legacy, Sueño Latino is housed in their signature fluted glass bottle, reimagined in 2021 with peacock-blue accents and a matte black insignia-stamped cap. The design is sleek yet weighty, a tactile nod to the brand’s Christopher Street origins, where the boutique first established its ethos as a temple of beauty. The bottle feels like a jewel, its vibrant blue evoking the lushness of the tropics and the vibrancy of Latin culture, making it a stunning addition to any collection.

Aedes de Venustas Sueño Latino is a triumph of sensory storytelling, blending the raw, humid richness of the rainforest with the pulsating energy of Latin American urban life. Unlike the tropical fragrances flooding the market, which often lean into predictable sweetness, this scent is a sophisticated fantasy, marrying juicy fruits with earthy woods and soft leather. It evokes the contrast of dense palms and Barragán’s bold pink walls, capturing the spirit of a culture that thrives in both nature and celebration. A scent that’s as vivid as a rainforest after rain, as sultry as a salsa-filled night, and as elegant as the brand’s legacy demands. It’s a reminder that fragrance is a dream—an escape into a world where nature and culture collide in a haze of warmth and passion. For those who seek a fragrance that’s both transporting and refined, Sueño Latino is an addictive journey worth taking.

Notes: Bergamot, Brazilian red pepper, Peruvian pink pepper, davana leaves, mango, milky fig, Suede, musk, guaiac wood, Mysore sandalwood, olibanum sap, amber, patchouli.

A bottle of Aedes de Venustas Sueño Latino was kindly gifted to me but opinions are always my own.

The fusion of Latin culture and the essence of the jungle-showcased in a scent that is highlighted by Brazilian and Peruvian red pepper paired with a spicy citrus note that combined with the fruitiness, uplifts the scent in its opening, continuing to dazzle with a spiciness from the aromatic Davana plant, with its chameleon nature. The vanilla and leathery suede in the drydown bring it to a satisfying close that is sensual and lingering.
A scent that is both refined and addictive–it stands apart from traditional tropical scents that lean heavily on the sweet side. with a sophistication that elevates the olfactory experience.

I love Aedes de Venustas. Signature is probably my favorite from the brand. Sueno Latino sounds like another winner from the brand. I like the description of the marriage of juicy fruits and earthy woods and soft leather. I live in Maryland USA.

  • I love Luis Barragan pink and figs and mango and mossy woodsy scents. Would definitely like to try. I’m in the US.

  • Ramses Perez says:

I was first taken aback when I saw this is fruits with a leather backdrop. I do agree that fruity and tropical fragrances tend to go the solar/juicy route so Gabriela is breaking new grounds with this earthy and damp take on the genre. The addition of Mysore sandalwood and the Brazilian and Peruvian peppers only adds to the complexity and exotic feel to the fragrance. This is definitely a house to watch for and to add to my endless ample list. I’m located in the USA.

  • I was not familiar with Firgood technology. Dsm-firmenich.com offers more details for my fellow geeks. The Kumquat fragrance from this house is my favourite. I’m in the US.

The contrast of fruity notes with earthier, damp tones like fig, patchouli, and woods really stood out to me. It sounds like it avoids the usual sweet tropical scents, which is refreshing. I’m curious how the pink pepper comes through. I don’t have a favorite from Aedes de Venustas yet, but this one caught my attention. I’m in the US

  • God, this sounds fantastic. The blends of citrusy peppery fruity leather, with a damp earthiness. The milky fig component just blows the top. And the presentation. Just luxurious and tropical. Need my nose on this ASAP. NY, USA.

  • God, this seems like a fantastic fragrance. Citrusy peppery, fruity leather with a milky fig component. Damp earthiness and musk. I need my nose on this ASAP. The presentation is the cherry of luxury on top NY, USA

  • A great take on tropical scents. Instead of the typical tropical sweetness, playing off the humidity makes for a realistic and heady experience. In maryland.

    Thanks for the fantastic writeup.
This fragrance has many unique things going on – fruity leather, zesty fruity pink pepper, rosa mango and fig and the grounding of sandalwood and incense.

I would really love to try this fragrance.

The words that come to mind are elegant sophistication. What really strikes me about Olya’s review is how she describes Sueno Latino as a “dreamlike fantasy” as opposed to the traditional sweet tropical fragrances. I have always bern fascinated by the amazon reading stories about Percy Fawcett and other great explorers. Combining the rainforest and Latin urban environment is bringing the 2 worlds together and really representing Latin America as a whole. Oyla wrote the scent brings nature and culture together which is a brilliant description of a fragrance. I’m always interested in the inspiration behind these fragrances. I am intrigued by the notes as well. Mango is one of my favorites with suede and creamy sandalwood it sounds like a dream. I am very interested in Sueno Latino for its notes and inspiration. I haven’t had any experience with the house but that will change. Thank you from Pennsylvania USA

  • A 3rd of my collection is tropical scents. I never get tired of a juicy mango with spices and I’ve been on a mission to smell them all. The description of this by Olya almost reminds me of Oud Rain from Renier Perfumes which is one of my favorites. And the leathery suede that was describes really sounds like a disctint note to really make this shine. Love the review, Thank you Olya. USA

  • I’m a huge fan of Aedes de Venustas. I have the flip top bottles. One of my faves is Pélargonium. Sueño Latino sounds delicious with its pepper, davana and olibanum notes. It would be nice to spritz during the summer months. Thanks for the opportunity. MI USA

This sounds fantastic and lush. I’d love to wear this in the summer. I live in Indiana and love to win. I already have Iris nazarena

  • kellyatwood says:

This sounds incredible. Anything that transports me to the jungles of Mexico, I’m sooo excited to experience!

  • Thank you Olya. It would be great fun to embark on this addictive journey with Sueño Latino 🙂 It sounds quite lovely. I’m in USA

  • A fruity smoky leather where raspberry isn’t the fruit involved sounds like a delightful evolution that I would be happy to try. I’ve been curious about this brand for a while now but haven’t tried any of them because I’m not aware of any US based retailers who carry their products. Admittedly I haven’t looked for them in awhile so perhaps they are more readily available in the States these days? Tropical ambery incense suede sounds quite unique. I’m in the USA

  • That sounds delicious! Mango seems to have emerged as one of the notes of the moment in perfumery. And while I love the smell of mango, putting it in an interesting olfactory context is tricky. Olya’s description of Sueño Latino makes it sound as if Gabriela Chelariu has done just that. I’m in Oklahoma, USA.

  • Daisy Perez says:

OMGwad!!! Sueño Latino sounds like something I want to have as a signature scent. Being a Latina through and through this just intrigues me. I need to get this ASAP in my collection. Of course this article just sells it to me. I’m sure it’s a Sueño Latino!!!

Happy 30th Anniversary, Aedes Perfumery! I’ve only been in your store once but it was magical.

Love this house and the fruity green freshness is right up my alley since I’m forever a fan of the signature scent. I’m in the USA, thank you.

  • This take on a rainforest fragrance is really compelling, using pepper to shine through the humid textures, and creamy, overripe fruit notes as a focal point. The woody base sounds earthy-green and dense. Olya pointed out Sueño Latino is neither overtly-sweet or solar-bright. Beautiful bottle too. I haven’t tried any Aedes de Venusta fragrances, so I’d love to try this on a warm summer day, especially on vacation.

    I’m in the USA.

  • Stephen Dovidas says:

The richness of damp jungle is the mist intriguing note to me? It sounds like a warmer fruitier version of Bat by Zoologists

  • Olya’s review makes this sound like the latin fragrance I’ve been in search of. Spicy citrus, ripe fruits, earthy woods, soft leather, and radiant amber. A balanced scent without an overt sweetness where jungle meets latin urban nights. Living in USA

  • absurdnose says:

I love the descriptions of this tropical earthy fig. The base notes, to me are perfect. Mysore sandalwood and patchouli seem like a perfect pairing for this. This sounds absolutely lovely. Hope to sample it soon. Thanks for the draw. I live in the USA.

  • I’m so happy to see something with fruits that isn’t super sweet or gourmand but brings in leather, myrrh, and Mysore sandalwood. I love fig too! I can’t wait to try this everything from this house is divine.
I am located in the U.S.

  • Angelika1 says:

I am from the Caribbean and every time that’s a fragrances inspired in a Tropical Rainforest coming out, I need to try it! The combination of mango, fig, and spicy pepper notes, particularly red pepper, really got me intrigued. Also the earthiness, amber and resinous woods notes in the dry out must be spectacular. I like Aedes de Venustas so I have a lot of speciations with this fragrances. Like always thanks Olya for making a masterpiece of review. In the USA.

  • foreverscents says:

I love fragrances that evoke the tropics, and Sueño Latino sounds like it will transport me to a lush rainforest AND a pulsating Latin American metropolis. I always like a fragrance that includes Mysore sandalwood in its base notes. The pink pepper, red pepper, mango and davana surely dance together in a Latin rhythm, one that is addictive, warm, and dreamy.
I love Iris Nazarena from Aedes. I also love visiting the store in NYC.
    I live in the USA.

  • This is the first fragrance dedicated to the rainforest and Latin American urban centers that I’ve encountered. The mango, peppers and davana leaves conjure images of tropical nightlife while the suede, sandalwood and patchouli speak to the natural areas. Sounds like an interesting blend of notes. MD, USA

  • The fusion of light and dark, damp elements makes for a rare treat. Between the bright bergamot and the use of peppers in the opening says bold but the fruity and lush backbone makes it palatable. The mango and the fig is exciting and what sets one apart in a market of clone and similar feels. Would love to own this and get my jungle on. From Jacksonville, NC.

  • roxhas1cat says:

The base has my interest with that Mysore sandalwood. I am tired of the abundance of sweet tropical fragrances as of lately. The bottle is indeed gorgeous. I have a fig tree and am still looking for that perfect fig scent. My favorite of the line is Cierge De Lune. Thanks for the chance to win this beauty. USA.

  • Kensolfactoryodyssey says:

I live in California, USA. What struck me most in Olya’s review of Sueño Latino was the way the fragrance blends lush, humid rainforest vibes with the sophistication of city life—especially the contrast between creamy fig, suede, and smoky woods. I love that it’s not another sweet tropical cliché but something dreamlike and layered. The vivid imagery of salsa nights, rain-slicked leaves, and Barragán pink walls transported me. I’ve always admired Palissandre d’Or, but Sueño Latino sounds like a new favorite waiting to happen.

  • The first words that come to mind are elegant sophistication. What immediately captivates me about Olya’s review is how she describes Sueno Latino as a dreamlike fantasy, setting it apart from the usual sweet tropical scents. I’ve always been fascinated by the Amazon, inspired by stories of Percy Fawcett and other legendary explorers. The idea of merging the rainforest with a vibrant Latin urban atmosphere feels like uniting two worlds, beautifully capturing the spirit of Latin America as a whole.

Olya’s observation that the fragrance blends nature and culture is such an insightful way to describe a scent. I’m always curious about the inspirations behind fragrances, and this one truly intrigues me. The notes alone are compelling… mango is one of my favorites, and combined with suede and creamy sandalwood, it sounds like an absolute dream. I’m genuinely excited to experience Sueno Latino, both for its composition and the story it tells. Although I haven’t tried anything from this house yet, that’s about to change. regards from New York, USA.

  • If I have to summarize the amount of pleasing to the eyes, and mind new semi tropical, semi urban information I’ll start with Olya Bar intro about Aedes de Venustas. I believe she had some very special fragrance experiences during the years with Robert Gerstner and Karl Bradl , the co-owners or Aedes Perfumery and their Aedes de Venustas brand. Hopefully one day I’ll be able to share such experiences myself. Other than wanting to visit Aedes de Perfumery even more now , I’m curious about Sueño Latino, upscale hedonistic fruity leather, not your typical essence of the jungle. A lot of salsa, less cocktails , spices, ripe fruits, woods and leather, now that’s unique fragrance with addictive trail I’d like to win.
I’ve smelled Aedes de Venustas Amnesia, smooth and elegant rose , no wonder Luca Maffei fragrance one of two Art and Olfaction Awards Winner in the Independent category last year.
    Thanks for the draw

I had the pleasure of visiting Aedes Perfumery, and to know most of Aedes de Venustas fragrances , my favorites are
    1. Iris Nazarena / Café Tabac
    2. Encens Japonais , the new interpretation of Aedes de Venustas by L’Artisan Parfumeur. The fragrance , and scented candles were made back in the days by L’Artisan exclusively for Aedes de Venustas boutique. The nose of both is of course Bertrand Duchaufour
    3. Cierge De Lune
Iris Nazarena in the original bottle , and one ~ 16 years old vintage bottle of Aedes de Venustas by L’Artisan Parfumeur i own
Sueño Latino is composed by the talanted Romanian Gabriela Chelariu, the fragrance is tropical, woody , fruity , spicy and leathery with incense nuances typical for some Aedes de Venustas offerings. Olya depicted Sueño Latino as a sophisticated fantasy, marring juicy fruits with earthy woods and soft leather , I’m all for such beautiful creations.
