LEDDA 22 Orris (Frank Voelkl) 2022 + Upbeat Iris Giveaway

Leddis Orris 22

Ledda 22 Orris was created in collaboration with beauty influencer Stephanie Ledda

LEDDA 22 Orris I have a confession: for years, I didn’t like iris as a note in perfumery. I loved the idea of irises in perfume  – they are my favourite flowers – but every time I came across a strong iris note in fragrance, I was puzzled. It smelled cold, rooty, and carrot-like; nothing like the complicated, mournful, sugar pastry bouquet of the bearded irises that display their frilly blossoms like saucy can-can girls around my neighbourhood each May. And then, one day, it all changed. I smelled Iris 39 from Le Labo, created by Principal Firmenich perfumer, Frank Voelkl – warm, woody, earthy – and realized that this flower could play nicely with other notes without losing its integral iris-ness. It wasn’t long before I came around to other styles of this elegant flower, from the chilly, powdered peruke of Serge Lutens Iris Silver Mist to the adorably frisky Coolife Le Sixieme. So, when I saw that Frank Voelkl was the nose behind a new orris perfume, I lurched like a fangirl at a Harry Styles concert to try it.

22 Orris is the debut perfume of LEDDA, a new fragrance brand from beauty influencer Stephanie LEDDA. Voelkl recalls the start of their partnership: “I met Stephanie when she visited our Firmenich New York offices and I was immediately struck by her passion for fragrances. She is very knowledgeable and able to exactly depict what it is that she likes in her scents, and we share the likes of similar scent profiles which was great when working together … it was several months of working through various iterations, and Stephanie is well versed in fragrances and was able to clearly explain what she wanted, which made this a great collaboration. This scent … has characteristics that are elevated but approachable at the same time.

Bearded Iris by Lauryn

And approachable it is: a mixture of classy and sassy: powdery, elegant iris-in-the-rain and a whiff of hairspray, like Guerlain Après L’Ondee getting dolled up for a date with Gucci Rush. With its generous dollop of iris butter – a 22% concentration, per the name — 22 Orris treads a tightrope between warm and cool iterations of iris with the assured balance of an aerial artist. The initial spray announces the classic iris aroma; French pastry dough, old paper and a touch of damp wood. But iris’ characteristic  coolness is almost immediately offset by a generous dusting of fruity pink pepper —that fruity, zingy party girl of modern perfumery. Just after pepper bounces in, a cloud of expensive face powder puffs in the air, returning the iris back to her aromatic sang-froid, and I get some white flowers, gardenia-like in their tinges of spice and creaminess.

At this juncture, LEDDA Orris 22 leans upper crust, even vintage. But, as the perfume warms on the skin, it teeters between sweet, fruity bounciness courtesy of the pink pepper and freesia and sophisticated, silken aspects thank to the central interplay of sandalwood and orris butters. This is a fragrance you could easily dress up with diamond studs and a satin slip dress or spritz on for some serious snuggling later. As time goes on, 22 Orris becomes creamier and richer, smoothed out by sandalwood. But that chipper, bouncy fruitiness continues to thread through the perfume, giving the fragrance an upbeat feel that carries on into the dry-down. 22 Orris settles into a cozy but polished skin scent with a finish that is powdery, a bit vanillic, but not overly sweet. Equal parts sophisticate and ingenue, LEDDA 22 Orris is a great first date perfume, equally at home at the ballet or a barbeque. Or, simply when you crave iris but not its foggy melancholy

Notes: Pear leaf, pink pepper, wild freesia, sheer jasmine, lily of the valley, iris butter, sandalwood, marshmallow musks, touch of moss.

I love iris and I love the work of Frank Voelkl so this is very appealing to me. A buttery smooth uplifting iris sounds divine.

  • I love that this perfume brings iris to the party for a good time. Sounds like a fragrance that could be worn anywhere, anytime. I do love iris as a note and right now, I’m enjoying Molecule plus iris.

  • I can’t say I am a big fan of iris perfumes, but it depends on the perfume, as Lauryn so eloquently describes in her experience with Iris 39 from Le Labo. Lauryn described it very well and I liked this part in her review – “Equal parts sophisticate and ingenue, LEDDA 22 Orris is a great first date perfume, equally at home at the ballet or a barbeque.” I am very curious to try this perfume. Thanks for the review and draw. I’m from the USA.

  • Lauryn!!! ❤️❤️❤️ Always Love your brilliant writing! So, this appeals to me: “powdery, elegant iris-in-the-rain and a
whiff of hairspray, like Guerlain Après L’Ondee getting dolled up for a date with Gucci Rush.” ❤️ Sounds fun and easy! Great date night fragrance! Thank you for the wonderful opportunity! ❤️ USA
ps – Frank Voelkl is such an intelligent and kind human. I really enjoy his fragrances and am so happy you are featuring his work!

I love orris! The balance of warm iris and cool iris intrigues me. Can’t wait to try it. Thank you. NY state

  • I love iris fragrances. This sounds a bit to feminine for me to wear but would be fantastic on my lady. New Jersey, USA

  • I just adore iris and would love to give this a try! Stephanie is also a beauty influencer I am familiar with and know that her perfumery taste matches mine. The marshmallow in this sounds intriguing. I would love to try. Thank you so much for the opportunity. With love! From MA, USA.

  • I do find the note of iris to be challenging for me to wear but I would love to give this a try. The description that this is a perfect “date” fragrance sounds incredibly intriguing and I wonder what this smells like. I think the moss and the note of marshmallow play off each other well. Would love to try this. From CT, USA

  • Iris is my favorite floral note and it’s exciting to see a fragrance at 22% concentration of orris butter. The rest of the notes give it a decidedly soft feminine flair. I appreciate that Frank Voelkl focuses on all aspects of iris, both warm and cool. My favorite iris perfume is SL Iris Silver Mist. MD, USA.

  • Oh boy, I am a huge fan of Iris perfumes, in fact they are my favorite ones for special dinner nights.
I think this one LEDDA 22 Orris is something really specail because of the fruity pink pepper and the 22 % of concentration, just amazing.
I hope I win this one because it would be awesome to add on my collection.

  • I agree I love orris/iris note but not the rooty carrotty kind and LEDDA 22 Orris seems to avoid that. I am in US.

  • AdventurousFox says:

Not from US, but I enjoyed reading about this new fragrance. Orris root is one of my favorite notes, as well as plant derived musks and jasmine. I’m a freak for all musks, iris and powdery notes. Especially of the cool, “dusty” iris facets, they develop nicely on my skin. If I get a chance I’ll add it to my ever-growing list of fragrances I want to try, am interested in how the interplay between cool and warm develops.

  • I was very excited when i saw this draw because iris/orris is my favorite floral note. I love it and all the different ways that it can be used in perfumery.

What appeals to me about LEDDA 22 Orris is when lauryn says that this is a fragrance you could easily dress up with diamond studs and a satin slip dress or spritz on for some serious snuggling later. Also the 22 % concentration of orris is intriguing to me as i know this ingredient is said to be a expensive one and is a favorite note of mine! The whole description of how this fragrance smells sounds very nice but the drydown described as powdery, a bit vanillic but not overly sweet calls to me as a powdery and vanilla lover. I look forward to sampling this as soon as possible.

  • Oooh I love a good popping pink pepper in a fragrance! And to have it juxtaposed to the regal Iris and warm sandalwood? Sounds incredible! I am in California! Thank you for the opportunity.

  • I am so curious about this scent and would love to try (without blind buying, ugh). I have just recently gotten into iris after actively disliking it as a note for years and love how changeable it can be — like in Lauryn’s review — cool and soft and powdery and warm. And of course, Frank Voelkl is a genius. (Love Glossier You and am a little sad the teens have found it via TikTok but I guess it doesn’t matter . . .) I’m in NYC, USA.

  • This iris sounds really interesting! I also have the same conundrum as Lauryn as iris perfume never smells how the flower itself smells. I’ve grown to appreciate more the rooty earthiness, but I’d love to find a perfume that smells more like the flower too! I live in the USA. Thanks for the giveaway.

  • Great review Lauryn—I’m typically not a huge orris fan, and Imaginary Authors O’Unknown was the first iris fragrance to really click for me. Looking at the note list and Lauryn’s description of LEDDA 22 Orris, I think it might be a little sweet and fruity for my tastes, but I think my wife might really enjoy it. I liked your conclusion here: “As the perfume warms on the skin, it teeters between sweet, fruity bounciness courtesy of the pink pepper and freesia and sophisticated, silken aspects thank to the central interplay of sandalwood and orris butters.” Thanks for the review.

    I’m in the midwest, USA.

  • I love your flowery imagery and eloquent description of this fragrance! I’m an iris lover and am also very drawn to this fragrance thanks to the perfumer. I am a big fan of his work and would love to try this scent!

  • sephrenia300 says:

Lovely review Lauryn! What appeals to me about 22 Orris based on Lauryn’s review is learning that the fragrance contains a 22% concentration of iris butter, luxurious and rich. I love fragrances with a high percentage of natural ingredients, particularly ones so extravagant as orris butter! It absolutely entices me to try it.

I am a huge a fan of iris perfumes, with L’Heure Bleu being one of my all time favorites! I live in the US.

I think that it’s interesting that Stephanie Ledda is knowledgeable of fragrances, e.g. she’s able to exactly depict what it is that she likes in her scents. I’ve heard a lot of praise about Voelkl’s fragrance creations, and I’d like to become more familiar with his work. It sounds like he masterfully uses the ingredients in this fragrance. I can enjoy iris in fragrances, e.g. J.P.G.’s “Le Male Le Parfum”, and “Dior Homme Intense” are two fragrances which I truly enjoy. I live in the U.S.A.

Thank you for the review Lauryn. I love the work of Frank Voelkl (Ermenegildo Zegna Indonesian Oud, Le Labo Santal 33 to name a few).

This fragrance sounds like a wonderful exploration into the facets of iris – buttery, soft, cold, powdery and I love that it is pushed around by all the interesting notes such as pear leaf and marshmallow musks). As with most iris scents, I do like that this becomes more of a skin scent.

I love iris fragrances – Community Iris, a lot of the Prada line, L’Eau Hiver.

    Cheers from WI, USA
