A pale wash of light yellow, gentle in substance and character.

Aloof by nature, yet its fragrance carries afar.

What need is there of fair cyan or pale red blossoms?

This one rank first among all the flowers. – Li Qingzhao, Song Dynasty poet describes osmanthus, translated by Ronald Egan

Chinese moon goddess, Cháng’é (嫦娥

Chinese moon goddess, Cháng’é (嫦娥) on the moon with osmanthus tree, wiki

In the Chinese lunar calendar, the osmanthus flower represents the eighth lunar month (roughly October), and its blooming coincides with the Mid-Autumn Festival celebrating the fall harvest and opulent Hunter’s Moon (or Harvest Moon). Families gather together to enjoy elaborate dinners, eat mooncakes, drink osmanthus wine, hang traditional lanterns, and moon-gaze. The origin story of the Mid-Autumn Festival is a tale about the moon goddess, Cháng’é (嫦娥). Legend goes that after secretly stealing and drinking her husband’s immortality elixir, she flees, floating up to the moon where she will remain for the rest of eternity. Cháng’é is joined on the moon by an osmanthus tree and a jade rabbit. It is said that her husband, heartbroken by their separation, makes offerings to his wife every year. Following in his footsteps, honoring the moon has become annual tradition in Chinese custom. The eighth lunar month is also the time when Chinese imperial exams were traditionally administered. Success on these exams was such a rare achievement that a proverb developed describing anyone who had passed as having “plucked the osmanthus from the Moon Palace” (蟾宫折桂).

The city of Suzhou is considered the best place in China to experience the osmanthus season, and within Suzhou, Liu Yuan Garden cannot be beat. Liu Yuan, or Lingering Garden, is a classic example of a scholar’s garden from the Ming and Qing dynasties. The Lingering Garden, dating back to 1593, is one of the famous Classical Gardens of Suzhou on the UNESCO World Heritage List.  Arrangements of garden rocks represented mountain ranges; miniature trees and bushes suggested ancient trees and forests; and small ponds or springs were viewed as mighty rivers and oceans. In other words, the garden presents the larger world of nature in microcosm. Clear sight-lines and geometric flowerbeds (formal gardens such as Versailles) are avoided in order to reveal experiences one at a time, as one journeys through the landscape. Gardens are designed to change with the seasons and to be discovered by engaging all the senses.

Givaudan perfumer Maxence Moette has captured the joy of Mid-Autumn Festival as well as the essence of the Lingering Garden in Le Jardin Retrouvé Osmanthe Liu Yuan (nicknamed O.LY. by the brand). This fragrance bursts full-dazzling out of the bottle with fresh, juicy yellow mandarin and fruity blackcurrant. It is optimistic and joyful.  Givaudan perfumer Maxence Mouette explains, “with this perfume, I wanted to focus on the most fragrant flower in China, osmanthus. I wanted to highlight its cheerful and fruity facets, with a leathery undertone.” Golden osmanthus is indeed allowed space to shine in all its complexity. There is a palpable softness much like the skin of an infant, peach fuzz, or velvety petals just after being plucked from the branch. The stirrings surrounding one’s body by this wonderful osmanthus absolute are captivating rather than captured. Fruity notes in a predominantly apricot direction (with hints of mango) form a complex geometry with the jasmine-like linalool floralcy and honeyed animalics recalling castoreum. Undertones are leathery-suedey, with hints of powdery ionones, carrot seed and I imagine a spicy vanillic jam made of hay, tea and molasses. The addition of the material ionone beta brings a soft powdery texture with subtle iris-violet notes and rooty cedar shavings smelling of time spent in cool damp earth.

unsplash

Cleverly, the ionone beta reaches for and bolsters the apricot note in the osmanthus (beta ionone is the second most prevalent molecule in apricot). A sense of harvest and home is truly attained with the base of patchouli, safraleine©, and sylkolide©. Safraleine© exhibits warm, leathery and tobacco facets with hints of spices like saffron enriched by rose ketone floralcy. Sylkolide© is an ambery-fruity musk with a slightly powdery texture, smelling of skin. Le Jardin Retrouvé Osmanthe Liu Yuan evokes the warmth of sun on skin, the vibrant animal heat present in the background of all human gatherings, and the tender love of family. It is delicate and dazzling all at once. Le Jardin Retrouve Osmanthe Liu Yuan invites you on a journey to linger in the solar glow of its fruity-floral-animalics  A joy to wear!

 Digital Authentication via brand website

With Osmanthe Liu Yuan’s dedication to place comes an excellent addition to the fragrance experience. Based on the technology of the French start-up SORGA, La Jardin Retrouvé offers digital authentication with each purchase. Why is it important? Your bottle comes with a guarantee of ownership and authenticity on the Blockchain. According to the brand, “public Blockchain technology allows information to be transferred through a tamper-proof system. Each bottle of perfume has its own unique number which guarantees its authenticity and ownership, avoiding fraud and transferable for gift giving.” The best part for me was a dedication to full transparency of ingredients inside the bottle. With my QR code came a map of ingredient origins, perfume certificates, production companies, and other information. This transparency and dedication to detail sets Le Jardin Retrouvé apart and earns my trust as a client.

The far-reaching journey of Osmanthe Liu Yuan arrives at a universal wisdom: from the scholars of Liu Yuan garden to the French scholar and philosopher Voltaire, “Life is bristling with thorns, and I know no other remedy than to cultivate one’s garden.”

Notes: Mandarin, Blackcurrant, Green leaves, Osmanthus, Jasmine, Iris, Peach/Apricot, Patchouli, Leather, Musk

  • Wow, what a wonderful review. I love the idea of a scent with fruity brightness and the softness of skin as well as the connection to the Mid-Autumn Harvest Festival. This scent sounds dazzling, and I would love to try it! I’m in the USA.

  • This sounds yummy and beautiful. I really like the notes and the bottle design. Kind regards from Mexico!

  • I loved reading about the history of the Mid-Autumn Festival. I was unaware of the tradition, but it sounds like a beautiful celebration. Liu Yuan Garden would be a nice place to visit, as well. After learning of Le Jardin Retrouvé Osmanthe Liu Yuan earlier this year, I have been very intrigued by the fragrance. It has received nothing but rave reviews. I love osmanthus, especially when it veers towards its apricot-like facet. I was already interested in Osmanthe Liu Yuan, but after reading Rachel’s comment about undertones of “spicy vanillic jam made of hay, tea and molasses”, I definitely need this in my collection. I have actually been loving osmanthus jasmine milk tea lately and it reminded me of this fragrance. I also love that La Jardin Retrouvé now offers digital authentication with every purchase. I wish more perfume houses would do this.

Thank you, Rachel, for the great review, and thank you to Le Jardin Retrouvé for the giveaway. I would love the opportunity to win a bottle of Osmanthe Liu Yuan (what a cute bottle, as well). I am located in the USA.

  • Lots of people seemed to be talking this like it was the crown jewel of Esxence 2023.

Everyone has seemed to love it with varying opinions.

The use and description of Golden Osmanthus. Petals plucked fresh from
the branch is something no one can avoid. Everyone smells the petals right after they are plucked.

Also cool having the QR code and individual serial numbering.

    Thanks from the US

Thanks Rachel for your review! My affection for osmanthus is infinite and I always have a packet of the flowers at home (usually buy it in Bangkok) and osmanthus scented tea (so good for cold tea). Didn´t know there was a Mid-Autumn festival around it !I love the natural apricot and leather scent profile it carries and it is a great idea build a perfume around the Liu Yuan Garden. Maxence Moette wants to provides us with this scent a ray of sunshine, happiness bottled: showing the fruity facet of osmanthus so opens juicy fresh with mandarine, blackcurrant and green leaves and then Osmanthus Absolute. To keep it in the fruity golden approach, the jasmine helps. Eventually the leathery nature of osmanthus also appears warmed with patchouli and those molecules. Love at first sight! What strikes me the most about Osmanthe Liu Yuan according to Rachel`s review is its ability to capture the essence of the Lingering Garden and the joy of the Mid-Autumn Festival. The fragrance is masterfully described as bursting with fresh, juicy yellow mandarin and fruity blackcurrant, and it highlights the cheerful and fruity facets of osmanthus, with a leathery undertone. The fragrance seems to be delicate, dazzling and captures the warmth of sun on skin, the vibrant animal heat present in the background of all human gatherings, and the tender love of family. I also appreciate the brand’s dedication to detail and transparency, which sets Le Jardin Retrouve apart from other brands.

I absolutely love and appreciate how Rachel composed this review with art, poetry and other cultural references w/r/t the Chinese scholar’s garden. I’m truly excited about Le Jardin Retrouvé Osmanthe Liu Yuan based on this contextual cultural information as well as the notes on this incredible formulation.

I have been wanting to try Le Jardin Retrouvé Osmanthe Liu Yuan for some time now, especially after reading previous posts here about this line presenting fragrances that promote well-being and happiness. Everything about this one has my imagination smelling something that would do just that with one spray.
I love Le Jardin Retrouves Mousse Arashiyama, such a calming beautiful fragrance, the note of mousse de chêne in its dry down is just divine… and I would be so eager to experience this one as well.
Thank you for the great review!

I’m not sure if this is too feminine for my taste but “Undertones are leathery-suedey, with hints of powdery ionones, carrot seed and I imagine a spicy vanillic jam made of hay, tea and molasses.” sounds like something I’d love. New Jersey, USA

  • The deep fruity notes of osmanthus always bring me back to early autumn in Japan. I’ve yet to visit China, but Rachel’s evocative description of Liu Yuan Garden brings me right there with the osmanthus in full bloom!

Le Jardin Retrouvé’s Osmanthe Liu Yuan sounds like an excellent homage to place and time. Fruity apricot paired with jasmine florals and an undercurrent of sweet animalic notes with the warm scent of earth and hay floating by- This could be no other scent than osmanthus against a background of sun-warmed fields!

The QR code and blockchain-certified authenticity is a nice touch (recalling China again, this is something I’ve seen done with high-quality tea but not yet in the fragrance sphere). I love the focus on transparency of ingredients and hope this is something that more perfume houses start to do.

I’d really love to try this fragrance! Best wishes from the US.

  • Sarah Faichney says:

The illustration on the box and label is beautiful! I enjoy osmanthus and it’s a note I’m keen to explore more. I love to find out about Chinese history and culture, so I found the review extremely interesting. This is a house I need to explore too! I live in Scotland, UK and will be looking into a discovery set or samples ASAP.

  • The fruity opening with the leathery, animalic undertones sounds really lovely. I’ve been searching for an apricot note and this sounds perfect! I also really appreciate learning more about the backstory of the garden that inspired this fragrance, and its rejection of formally arranged landscapes in favor of a more organic exploration. I am located in New York, in the US!

  • I’m a huge fan of Le Jardin Retrouvé, the whole collection is beautiful, the perfume, the packaging and the ethos. Very excited to read about the new scent, I’m intrigued by the idea of a leather apricot scent and enchanted by the evocation of the osmanthus season. Can’t wait to try it. UK

  • I don’t have an osmanthus scent in my collection, and Le Jardin Retrouvé Osmanthe Liu Yuan sounds like the perfect addition. I love the adorable bottle, but of course it’s what’s inside that counts, and what’s inside sounds delicate and beautiful. Thanks for the review and giveaway!

I appreciated the introduction about the moon festival, especially the story about Chang e — growing up that was always one of my favorite tales. I would love to try Osmanthe Liu Yuan because it sounds delightful and joyful! I also like how the fragrance is inspired by the Lingering Garden, which is a place I hope to visit one day.

I was lucky enough to be in Suzhou in October, where there are lovely gardens everywhere. We also were treated to four Chinese opera singers practicing. It is a magical place and this fragrance attempts to capture some it its magic. The notes are wonderful. Blackcurrant is one of my new favorites. I hope I get a chance to smell this fragrance

  • Hi there, I live in Canada and appreciate the article because it is insightful and exposed me to a house (Le Jardin Retrouvé) and perfumer that I had not heard of before. What I find interesting about Osmanthe Liu Yuan includes the description that it evokes warmth of the sun on the skin and the beautiful artistry of the design bottle design (typically I care very little about fragrance packaging, but this I find lovely!). Thank you so much for doing a giveaway and for informing us about this house and scent!

  • Some months ago I bought the Discovery set for every perfume of Le Jardin Retrouvé. They were all great perfumes in complexity, density, volume, or in its simplicity, bringing us perfumes of decades past.

After a couple of weeks of contemplation, the last perfume I tried was Mousse Arashiyama from Maxence Moutte and it was such a delight. His interpretation of a garden immersed in the woods, in tranquility, was in line with the other creations made by Yuri Gutsatz.

Since the focus of this perfume is the Osmanthus, I’m eager to smell the interpretation being brought to life here as it is one of my favorite flowers.

So, as I always say, whether I’m lucky enough to win this giveaway or not, I will be trying the newest creation of Le Jardin Retrouvé soon enough :-).

Saludos a Clara, Michel y Maxence.

    Concepción, Chile.

  • Oh boy, I am a huge fan of Le Jardin Retrouve, being Sandalwood Sacre my favorite one yet.
I think that I am already in love of Osmanthe Liu Yuan, begining with the bottle and finishing with all the notes. I love that yellow mandarin and blackcurrant are very prominent in here.
I think that this fragrance is the equivalent of going to a beautiful garden in China.

I love osmanthus in parfum. The quality that speaks to me is the softness like the skin of an infant, or velvety petals which is describe in the article. I would love to have it in my collection. Greetings from Milan, Italy

  • Enjoyed Rachel’s review of Le Jardin Retrouvé Osmanthe Liu Yuan very much, especially the legend of the Moon Goddess and how the Chinese celebrate it. The perfumer seems to have done an incredible job of capturing the smell of osmanthus, hence also the spirit of the festival. It is also interesting to learn how the brand makes sure of the authenticity of their product by using QR code technology. Thanks for the review and draw. From continental United States.

  • starsnek says:

I love osmanthus forward scents, but more on the lighter side so I’m excited to see a scent that seems to focus more on the fruity and musky qualities. I’m already imagining myself wearing Osmanthe Liu Yuan for the rest of spring. Hello from the USA!

  • As an October baby myself who is a lover of all things “joyful and optimistic”, this ode to osmanthus embodied in fragrance seems like it would be an absolute fit! As osmanthus is occasionally overpowering, I appreciate that this perfume is described as “both dazzling and delicate”…. everything I would hope to reflect in my own person were it possible. Thank you for this generous draw. I live in New Hampshire, USA.

  • Trinity33 says:

Osmanthus is such a pretty, delicate floral note. I love the fuzzy apricot facets it brings to the white flower base. Even though, as Rachel notes, it’s associated with the mid-Autumn festival in China, I immediately think of spring flowers when I smell it. The combination with fruit, jasmine, iris and leather sounds delightful. The composition seems exceptionally well blended. MD, USA

  • Osmanthus has been a note on my radar recently; I’ve been exploring all types of perfumes with this wonder note in it. Thank you so much for bringing this one to my attention! I’m also a big sucker for peach.
Very interesting to see blockchain technology used in this application; I am of the mind that blockchain/ethereum is a fantastic tool that is greatly misunderstood by the masses right now, thanks in part to NFT hype. NFT’s have a place, but million dollar pictures of apes is NOT it, haha.
    Thanks from Canada!

  • This is a really lovely review of a fragrance I have been curious about since I first heard it mentioned. When I lived in Singapore for several years, Mid Autumn festival was a particularly joyous time, reminding me a little of our American Thanksgiving. I like the notes listed and the memories they are supposed to bring. Thanks for the draw.

  • minteacup says:

Ever since this fragrance was highlighted on the Cafleurebon Esxence recap articles the description of Le Jardin Retrouve’s Osmanthe Liu Yuan stayed with me. The optimistic, joyful impression is what intrigues me most of all. Other osmanthus perfumes I’ve tried, like Les Indemodable’s soliflore and Serge Lutens Daim Blond, exuded a distinctly aloof and cool impression, so I’d like to see a sunnier side of osmanthus perfume. Outside of perfume, I’ve been known to enjoy an osmanthus oolong tea or osmanthus scented sweet rice. I am in the USA, thank you for the draw!

  • Gnossiennes says:

Thank you so much, Rachel, for the adorable writing and detailed background! It is really informative!
In their 2018 guide, Luca Turin’s comment on Nicolai’s Fig Tea suggested how diverse osmanthus can be. In the ‘traditional’ ‘Western’ perfumery, osmanthus is often featured with its sweet jammy facet (e.g. Jean Patou’s 1000) which is quite different from the airy sweet flowers in Chinese daily memories. Yet, besides the peach fuzz Rachel mentioned, some Chinese reviewers have also spoken very high of Osmanthe Liu Yuan for capturing this floral facet. Thus it is definitely a must-try for me!
    Love from Shanghai.

  • Patricia R. says:

I dont know what to expect, but the deliverance of the dainty packaging and the description of the exotic rock gardens and fuzzy peach promise something nice and unusual for me. I have no experience with osmanthus. Thank you for the opportunity.

I have been reading a lot about Osmanthus Liu Yuan these days, especially from reviewers who attended Esxence 23. O. LY sounds like a dazzling fragrance, bursting with brightness from the mandarin and blackcurrant. The leather and suede undertones certainly will take the wearer of the fragrance on a happy journey.
Using blockchain technology to guarantee the authenticity of the bottles is a wonderful feature that I hope more perfume houses start using.

  • I love osmanthus notes and based on Rachel’s review it sounds like Osmanthe Liu Yuan strikes a great balance between the leathery and fruity aspects of the note. I would love to win a bottle! I’m in MN, USA.

I loved reading the background about osmanthus and its significance to the Mid-Autumn Festival. Osmanthus is such an interesting flower and smell and I’m interested in how they showcased this in the fragrance. I live in the US.

  • What truly strikes me of Le Jardin Retrouvé Osmanthe Liu Yuan is its ability to evokes the warmth sun on skin that optimistic and joyful. The notes are indeed brilliant with fruity mandarin and blackcurrant along with florals with tobacco leathery animatic’s. This sounds like a beautiful scent to uplift the spirits. Thanks for such an amazing giveaway. Greetings from the USA.

Thanks for the great review Rachel!

I really like this brand a lot. I managed to pick up a few of their samples and their is a wonderful old world touch to their perfumes, both in terms of sensibility and composition. Reading the story of this brand, I’m glad that they have found a perfumer who upholds the creative ideals of the brand.

    Cheers from WI, USA

I love the scent of osmanthus and this scent sounds like a beautiful tribute to folk lore and the osmanthus flower. I think the use of mandarin and blackberry for fruity juiciness creates a nice sense of offering to the Moon Goddess, while the rest of the notes convey the kaleidoscopic garden of nature in such detail.

  • Before even getting to Rachel’s wonderful review, I noticed the photo of Osmanthe Liu Yuan’s exceptional packaging. I love the bottle design and fabric bag it’s paired with. I also enjoyed Rachel’s informative description of the role the osmanthus tree and scholar’s gardens play in Chinese culture, especially the Lingering Garden. I don’t think I’m particularly familiar with osmanthus flowers or that note in perfume, but Rachel’s description of it’s effect in osmanthe Liu Yuan is detailed and helpful, and I’m intrigued by the leathery, tobacco faceted drydown and how it combines with osmanthus’s fruity apricot note. Excellent review and this sounds like a beautiful wear.

I’m in the USA. Thanks for the giveaway.

I would love to try something from Le Jardin Retrouvé, and “Osmanthe Liu Yuan” sounds like something I’d like to try. I’m very interested to experience a fragrance which includes osmathus that seems to have both a leathery aspect and an apricot aspect. I live in the U.S.A.
