Top 10 Perfumes of 2023

2023 has been quite a rollercoaster ride, full of the most intense curves both personally and professionally. An exciting year in perfume with so many new releases that my task of narrowing it down to 10 plus one and 5 honorable mentions is gargantuan, in an arena we have seen grow and develop over the last 8 years beyond our wildest imaginings. I continue to hold fast to my ever-shrinking ground of writing and imagery that is not AI constructed, I have vast trepidations, for I believe in the human endeavor to create, that has its origins in soul nature, which takes time, effort and creative thinking, I also believe we will return to the classic forms eventually as all in life is cyclic.  So, a Fuddy duddy I will continue to be. I am fortunate in my life to live in Europe and to have a life that enables me to attend many of the perfume fairs and events, this year I attended 3 of the major events, Esxence (ÇaFleureBon has been a media partner since 2010), Pitti Fragranze and Cannes, as well as lesser-known events. A few trends that are clearly emerging are the upsurge in interest in artisanal perfumery, it is phenomenal. Other trends that really piqued my curiosity and merited my admiration was the creation of perfumes that really exceeded all my preconceptions, certain brands and perfumers exhibited a daring approach and in doing so, reached out to create something of great note.

I am excited by the turning of the year as 2024 promises to be even more spectacular. Difficult tasks must be undertaken so here is my list of Top 10 Perfumes(plus 1) of 2023 and 5 honorable mentions, in no ranking or order and by no means exhaustive.

Extra Virgo Oracle ( HH Prince Alex Postiglione of Limbin and Michele Marin). Extra Virgo is a perfume house that has truly touched me, Oracle is the new release and is a libation for the devotee, a perfumed intonation of communion, Tuscan citrus and intoxicating herbals drift under your skin on layered veils of incense, curling languidly skywards. The invitation to voyage within, a call to listen with all other senses, to read between the lines, to touch between the notes and hear the whispers between breaths. Invoke at Will. @extra_virgo @marin_infragrantiparfumeur

Meo Fusciuni Viole Nere (Guiseppe Imprezzabile) a magnificent interpretation of violet, a cached aspect of her we never before imagined, a seductive flower discovered in the darkened dusty corners of an ancient chest and revived with a breath of forest airs. In her earthly shrouds she emerges brightly innocent and piercing in verdancy, perfume lifting into damp undergrowth. Here and there like flitting spectres, we catch a glimpse, in periphery of fee, elusive and mildly dangerous, earth bound and yet free to take wing. Violet is secretive here, her delicate face hiding darker and more edgy aspects, wildly erotic. Enticing and timeless, one to wear, drawing the threads of time together. @meofusciuni_parfums

Thomas de Monaco  Fuego Futuro (Maurus Bachmann) a beckoning to adventure, an invitation of the unknown, an elemental wilderness under a heated sky. Solar infused herbals are swayed in a simple rhythm, bare feet doused in twilight, dare to leave a trace on pristine sands. Walking in knee length meadows bleached under bluest skies, the scent of glorious relaxation. Warmed airs carry resins and smoked woods to linger in my hair and the suns heat leaves traces on my skin, the days warmth resting on my body as night falls, a tangible effortless summers day encapsulated, sun, earth fire and sea. @thomasdemonaco

Cherigan Paris Bleu Imperiale Limited Edition: this was a long-awaited revival for me, a homage to the original release by Cherigan Paris in 1945, this version is given a modern slant yet still holds all its classic structure in place, like a beautiful woman all the classical elements of beauty remain in place regardless of age.  A discrete elegance yet completely up to date, this is a historical piece and a jewel in the annals of perfumery. A Chypre-Floral that exudes style from every pore, effortless Parisian chic which feels so timeless. Its limited-edition cut-glass bottle just add to its understated glamour. Think classical perfumery with an urban sophistication. @cheriganparis

Abel  Black Anise (Isaac Sinclair): I am naturally drawn to those perfumes that seem effortless and stay true to nature, Abel produces consistently. Black Anise was a revelation, an herbal infusion that turns your idea of Anise on its head, here is a seductive and alluring bewitchment that leaves you gasping for breath. Seductive and alluring the combination of blackcurrant and cacao is an eroticism unapparelled, that moment of union unsolicited in a momentary glance, a lifetimes touch in an instant. Enveloping and addictive, Black Anise leaves you wanting more. #IsaacSinclair @abelfragrance

Azman Perfumes  Risk (Antonio Gardoni): How could I not include this daring and evocative composition in my Top 10, I am sure many others will do the same. Risk took our perceptions of Oud and grabbing us by the wrist took us on a whirlwind adventure where all manner of unseen vistas opened in front of us. Facets revealed within this masterly blending of six ouds, previously unknown, shocking and surprising. The supporting cast allowed oud to escape its dirtier past and revel in heights of floral and waxy delight, I am constantly surprised by this perfume, it is a work of brave genius. @azman_perfumes  @bogue_profumo

Rubini Odenaturae (Cristiano Canali): I had the privilege of smelling Odenaturae in its developmental stages and was struck by its sun infused essence melded with a surprising verdancy. In its released version these are still there, a sunlit Elysium, bright and green with shafts of bucolic pastures and citrus, luminous light through a canopy of green. Elysium fields of glorious golden hues and ripened meadows, herbals gifted strength by the heat. Familiar and feeling at home again, here is the reminder of our true place. A summer’s romp in natures lap, the scent of what we used to live daily, that harmony and union with nature in all her facets.  @rubini_profumi

Parfumeurs du Monde Albedo (Stephane Piquart): Always fascinated when I meet with Stephane and have the opportunity to smell all his incredible raw materials, components he sources as ‘Le Sourceur’, he is an explorer of the olfactive. Albedo is his creation, based on a journey from darkness to light and incorporating the work of the Alchemist, the whitening or purification, it turns the olfactory pyramid on its head. An intriguing composition containing resources from his portfolio, curiosities like Fire Tree, Bushmans Candle, Hyraceum and little used Cosmos. Shadows and smoke lifting in a dewy morning haze to finally reveal an illumination. A unique adventure in perfume. @parfumeurs_du_monde  @le_sourceur

Jorum Studio Spiritcask (Euan McCall): A truly delicious and mouthwatering concoction of spirits, past and present, one of the best boozy, vanillic and gourmand infused perfumes I have ever smelt. It rolls over you like the warmth that seeps into your bones after a good dram of single malt.  Spectres rise and fall in its imbibing, comforting and mildly haunted, it entices and draws you close with sumptuous cacao, coffee and caramel all swathed in high quality distillations of malt and wild dashes of rum and cognac. As a winemaker I know all too well the whispered tales that a barrel yields once its contents have departed, wood holds many stories, come closer to the fireside, imbibe a little and let us begin, maybe a tale of good fortune or one of a more ghostly nature. @jorumstudio

Iconofly Personne (Alexandre Isaie Helwani): I am a great admirer of former contributor and perfumer Alexandre’s work for it is meticulous and well researched with his inquiring mind and curious nose. Personne, a work that recreates in a perfume the voyages of Homer in The Odyssey and incorporating as many as possible the plants mentioned. It is a rare glimpse into antiquity and it caught my classical imagination. Whiffs of sea drifted plants clinging to cliffs, deeply aromatic Mediterranean herbs captured at the sun’s zenith.  Ancient zephyr’s carrying the enticement of approaching lands, infused with all the sum of its parts, the people undertaking such a vast unknown, intrepid and confident, this is a rare glimpse into a mythology, given life as if the God’s themselves had breathed into it. Alexandre’s talent was gifted a fair wind and a following sea, I eagerly await M. Helwani’s next adventure. @iconofly @theperfumechronicles

Kajal Perfumes Kajal IV (Kevin Mathys). Heated, seductive exoticism, luxurious melding of Middle Eastern culture and gastronomy. I am always curious regarding the creations that issue from Kajal, they are rich and opulent expressions written within grand voyages reminiscent of ‘The Grand Tour’ of another age. Here, it seems that we are held for the very first time, with wide open senses within the view of a vast terrain, a palpable silence of vast-stretched sands. Zephyrs carrying sweet intonings of dates and palm flowers. Embraced by the symbolism of the number 4, it is a completeness of self, the traveller’s instinct to stay in each moment and imbibe fully, departing from the weighted accumulation of past experiences. It embodies, effortlessly the immense awe of finding oneself in a never-ending landscape where the light is different, the heat warms the soul and the scents, unfamiliar rise to welcome us.  With its rich combination of leather, musk and woods at the base it is the perfect travelling companion for the adventurous. @kajalperfumes @kevin.mathys.perfumer (Michelyn’s 2023 Rising Star)

Best fragrances of 2023

Top 10 Perfumes of 2023 Honourable Mentions in no particular order:

Manos Gerakinis Parfums – SEΛENE in Greek and Selene in English (Christina Koutsoudaki) is an ethereal and night bound floral of great delicacy. Disclaimer – I was involved, courtesy of Manos in the evaluation and inspiration of the name for this perfume. @manosgerakinisparfums @christinakoutsoudaki

Filippo Sorcinelli – Haec Dies (Filippo Sorcinelli): A profound, timeless murmuring of deep emotion, revelatory and tender, full of hope and faith. @filippo_sorcinelli

Francesca Bianchi Perfumes  Byzantine Amber ( Francesca Bianchi) is a rich and intricate tapestry of voluptuous proportions, interwoven decadence with a touch of the Baroque.  @francesca_bianchi_perfumes

Der Duft In Flagranti (Antonio Alessandria ): A floral of distinctive exclusivity, obsessively decadent and wildly addictive, some things cannot be refused. @der_duft @antonio_alessandria_parfums

Calaj Perfumes Delizia Oscura (Flavius Cajal) This one took me completely by surprise at Pitti Fragranze and it has remained with me ever since. The most incredible gourmand, laced in sumptuous dark chocolate and coffee, so good that devouring one’s wrist becomes an option. Violet emerges as if from humid earth. So, so addictive, mouthwatering in the extreme. @calajperfume

Meo Fusciuni best artisan perfumer of 2023

Meo Fusciuni

Top 10 Perfumes of 2023: Best Perfumer of the Year Guiseppe Imprezzabile (Meo Fusciuni ) A tribute that I can trace back to 2016 when on my first trip to Florence and my first Pitti Fragranze, I happened to pass by an interesting boutique opposite Dante’s house and purchased ‘Luce’,  fell in love and deep admiration. Giuseppe, with the love and support of Federica produces deeply profound and unique perfumes, each one of his collections I have loved and always I am filled with his genuine transmission in each release. His perfumes contain his soul, his life, his emotions, they are a clear glimpse into his personal experience and transcend from mere olfactory works to something of a higher nature, inspired by inner musings and his love for nature. From an ode to his beloved in Encore du Temps to voyages that inspired him in Varanasi and Sogni to the most recent darkly innocent beauty of Viole Nere.  He is a quiet and humble man of genius, a union of modern alchemist, poet and ancient soul. I am grateful for all the beauty, the truth of his creations and the enduring glow of friendship. @meofusciuni_parfums

Top 10 perfumes of 2023

2023 has been an invigorating and exciting year for independent and artisanal fragrances. As science delves further into the neurobiology of olfaction, we are discovering more about the epistemology of scent and expanding the very boundaries of fragrance art. The perfumes that most drew my attention this year are oriented by an aesthetics of post-modern deconstruction; fragrances that, in some manner, deconstruct pe-existing forms and reimagine them in a way that fractures categorization. The Top 10 perfumes of 2023 has greatly encouraged my hope in the future of perfumery with informed efforts to protect the perfumer’s palette and continued commitment to originality represented by the Perfumery Code of Ethics (many adherents’ work you will see on my best-of list). I look forward to seeing what’s next. The fragrances that most excited both mind and body, this year:

Stora Skuggan Hexensalbe (Anna Barkne) bewitches our beloved vocabulary of green scents, and through some modern alchemy, creates an exciting perfume elixir. The fragrance is a reconstruction of the scent of a hallucinogenic flying ointment said to be used in the practice of European witchcraft. Sharp pinches of herbal-green wormwood bring to mind the narcotic effects of absinthe and the intoxication of vermouth. Salty Licorice layers an anisic and lightly camphoraceous complexity to this mossy masterpiece. @storaskuggan

Wit & West The Violetear (Whitney Swales) shatters the myth that iris flowers are mute and produce no scent. Most irises native to the “wild west” of the United States do produce fragrance. Violet and freesia are often reported to be the comeliest of “wild west” iris blossom scents. Whitney Swales spent two years making an extraction of bearded iris flowers through the painstaking enfleurage process. In The Violetear, the opulence of the reserve iris enfleurage rises in a rainbow of amethyst, mauves, periwinkle, and plum. This is a stunning violet candy scent with slightly earthy and musky undertones and a delicately soft talc texture. This gorgeous fragrance expands our knowledge of what is possible in perfumery. @witandwest

Darren Alan Perfumes Jonquille (Darren Alan) plays with vintage olfactive codes to create a vivid scene. This is a yellow spring floral fragrance of Mimosa and Jonquil that records in a contemporary key. Tender new greens and golden musks surround a femme floralcy that feels like an entire world rediscovered. Much like the best post-modern fiction, Darren Alan’s work is able to deconstruct vintage tropes and grow incredibly poetic and beautiful shapes that feel entirely natural in today’s world. @darren_alan_perfumes

Rogue Perfumery Targhee Forest (Manuel Cross) known for his liquid conversations with past and present, this fragrance explores Manuel Cross’s skills as a cartographer. With Targhee Forest we are presented with an ecosystem translated into the bottle. This is the special moment when morning sun warms the resinous bark of noble pines in the Targhee Forest. Due to perfumer Manuel Cross’s accomplished use of materials, we are able to experience nature’s breath and living pulse through the simulacre. A rare accomplishment indeed. @rogue.perfumery

Call Me by Diane St. Clair for American Perfumer guides us as evening unravels into its deepest shadows. We find a soft, animalic leathery musk, well-turned with no rough edges. From the golden elation of autumn leaves to the softest warmth of musky skin, Call Me reminds us how it feels when autumn light drops from the very heights of the sky to embrace our skin. This fragrance is as fine-tuned and reverent as the divine tintinnabula of Arvo Pärt. @stclairscents @american.perfumer

Anjali Under the Mango Tree (Anjali Vandemark) creates healing through scent. Blue chamomile essential oil and lavender essential oil offer herbaceous diffusion around the layered heart of wild rose and rose water. Base notes of fir balsam, pine wood, and hay recall the dry and healing air of mountain retreats. The mango skin note develops slowly into a ripe mango fruit that blends effortlessly into the protective canopied environment created by Anjali’s memories of playing under the mango trees of her youth. Wearing this fragrance has given me great mental and emotional peace and healing, something I wish for everyone this year and next. @anjali_perfumes

Parfums Quartana Forest of the Golden Dream (Céline Barel) walks us to an enchanted forest, where pine needles crunch underfoot, crisp evergreens hang in the air, and a golden solar radiance follows from the opening. Olibanum creates a bridge from the spicy materials of the top with its lemony, spicy, and terpenic qualities. Siberian Pine Needle, Fir Balsam, and Fir Balsam Resin work together to embody a sublime sense of place. Woody and coolly aromatic, we are transported to a sacred forest of ancient wellness. Joseph Quartana’s gifted mind creates the most fascinating and intricate landscapes of meaning, myth, and olfactory sensations in his work with perfumers. His oeuvre is a must-try. @parfums_quartana @celinebarelperfumery

Amouage Lineage (Karine Vinchon-Spehner) creates a vibrant energy with the most meditative calm. If I were to guess what nirvana could feel like, something close to the solar, mineral, balsamic, and resinous-incense magic of this fragrance comes to mind. Hot sand, hot rocks, and a mineral ocean feel immortal in this lovely and unique fragrance. Amouage is sustaining and reimagining one of the most important olfactive legacies in the world. From their work with frankincense to reimagining attars and mukhallats, Renaud Salmon and the Amouage team are definitely worth getting to know.  @amouageofficial @karinevinchonperfumer

Le Jardin Retrouvé Osmanthe Liu Yuan (Maxence Moutte) is quickly becoming one of my favourite fragrances for life. Osmanthus has never smelled so joyful and satisfied on my skin. Powdery leather with apricots and floral accords builds on their mid-century house traditions with such interesting and exquisite expressions. Fragrance houses that have such a careful eye to their own past of quality and materials are a joy to find and experience. Le Jardin Retrouvé is one not to be missed. @lejardinretrouve @maxencemoutte

DSH Perfumes x ÇaFleureBon Disco Queen (Dawn Spencer-Hurwitz) plays with the best of the 1970s and 1980s in a cool and sexy pastiche. This is a dazzling bottle that reanimates the best cultural memories for perfume lovers around the world. Even if one did not live through these decades, the burst of sparkling aldehydic shimmer from the bottle gives all the glam necessary. White florals with an intoxicating Bellini accord make this fragrance perfect for New Year’s Eve and any celebration you have in mind. Disco Queen was created together with Editor-in-Chief Michelyn Camen to celebrate the 13th Anniversary of ÇaFleureBon! @dshperfumes

Top 10 Perfumes of 2023 Honorable Mentions

For the Scent of It Grand Soleil (Michael Schrammel) a gorgeous solar fragrance whose use of frankincense with a summer floral bouquet adds the most transcendental lift to a happy summer scent.  @forthescentofit

Areej le Doré History of Indonesian Oud (Russian Adam) is one of Areej Le Doré’s latest releases in their new line of sprayable ouds. This scent is refined and delicate in its invitation to experience one of the world’s greatest olfactive materials, perfect for quality introduction to the world oud. @areejladorearabic

Eris Parfums Delta of Venus (Antoine Lie) is simply the best guava accord I’ve experienced in perfumery. Lush and intoxicating, Barbara Herman’s continues to release exciting fragrances that stimulate the mind and senses. @erisparfums @antoinelieolfactiveexperience

Les Indémodables Patchouli Noisette (Antoine Lie) is an accomplishment of everything I want to see more of in fragrance, especially ethical practices in materials and supply chain. At the end, we are given a gorgeous and innovative perfume bringing new life to a classic material (patchouli) and introducing the first commercial scent to use hazelnut.@les_indemodabeles_officel @antoinelieolfactiveexperience

Roberto Greco Rauque (Christopher Sheldrake) is art of the highest order. My personal favorite fragrances consider how materials can interact with our deepest human selves (perfume is special because it is the art that is the most physically intimate – we wear it on our bodies). Rauque is a sophisticated and vibrant example of perfumery as wearable art.  @roberto___greco  @christopher.sheldrake

Amber Jobin of Aether Arts Perfume

Amber Jobin of Aether Art Perfume

Top 10 Perfumes of 2023 Best Perfumer Of The Year: Amber Jobin Of Aether Arts Perfumes who is the creator of several of my favorite scents of this year, including Midnight Sugar, Scylla, Kittens & Cream, and cyBorg Queen. She is also the artist who has created many of the bottles that first opened my eyes to the realization that fragrance could also be art, rather than simply commodity, for example Art and Olfaction winners Mayan Chocolate in 2022 and John Frum in 2014. Amber’s brilliant creations are full of deepest humanity, expansive curiosity, and richest feeling. I am intellectually (and physically) moved by her expansive world of olfactive wonder and beauty. Thank you, Amber, for always trusting your creative light, pushing boundaries, and making beautiful wearable art! @aetherartsperfume

  • Thank you Danu and Rachel for taking the time to compose your lists, and for offering your ownderful insights to all of us throughout the year. There were so many great releases this year. It is always fun to see which one overlap from list to list (I’m looking at you, Risk and Viole Nere), but it is just as exciting to see new entries mentioned as the week progresses. It’s extra fanciful when indie brands like Rogue and Darren Alan are given their due praise. Targhee Forest and Jonquille were two exquisite releases for us lovers of classic/vintage style scents. I was also happy to see a few fragrances mentioned that I had honestly forgotten about amidst the steady stream of new offerings. If I were to be chosen, I would have to go with Kajal IV. I received a sample of it right before Christmas and wore it a couple nights ago. Wow, it is amazing stuff! It is quite possibly the best I have tried from the brand so far, and I would be ecstatic to have it. Bets of luck to everyone. I live in NC, USA.

  • Ramses Perez says:

I am not a fan of the ideology that one day AI can overtake the human race when we created them. Yes, it can learn, adapt and grow but no AI could ever conjure up any of the olfactory potions (to give it a name) a human can. Creation and imagination is still at the core of the human race and this list is certainly no different. Kajal is a house that has always been in my radar, I just haven’t gotten around to acquire one. Alas, now I have the opportunity to win one, so here’s hoping to win Kajal IV Homme. Cheers from NJ, USA

  • A lot of intriguing new releases this year. So many brands I never heard of and so many that I already know. Can’t wait to test the latest Meo Fusciuni scent as I admire the creativity and craftsmanship of Guiseppe Imprezzabile. Targhee Forest by Rogue is another one that catches my attention. Forest, resinous bark, pines is an amazing blend. Kajal IV sounds seductive and exotic. Count me for the draw 🙂 Greetings from EU.

  • Sorohan Adriana says:

Stora Skuggan is my choice because I love touberose and when I see a touberose I want it! I am from EU

  • These are some attention grabbing choices by Danu and Rachel. Never experienced Amouage before and Amouage Lineage caught my eye with its solar, mineral, balsamic, and resinous-incense magic which makes it unique. If this evokes a vibrant energy with the most meditative calm then I’m sold. Another house which I’ve never experienced, Parfums Quartana Forest of the Golden Dream sounds like a delightful composition with its coniferous aspects. I like the concept of being transported to a sacred forest of ancient wellness. I can see this working magic during the colder months. I’d like to win Kajal IV. Thank you for the opportunity. New York, USA.

  • I would choose Kajal, I’m in maryland. Wow, this is a most unusual grouping of fragrances. It is wonderful to be introduced to so many new-to-me fragrance lines. I know many of the more well known houses, but you always introduce me to lines I know nothing about. These almost all fall into that category.

  • highligh how many incredible, independent perfume brands we have today and the embarrassment of riches we have at our noses! It truly is a golden age for small perfumers and I’m happy to be here for it. Thanks for giving me inspiration. I’m very curious to smell the Hexensalbe as I’m a bit witchy and the bottle is perfection. In USA

  • Another mention of Viole Nere! It seems to be one of the overall winners for this year! Interestingly most people were talking about Sogni so far, which is not the case in most of these end-of-the-year lists. Another interesting mega-winner seems to be Black Anise. Two of my favorite fragrances this year were Forest of the Golden Dream and Targhee Forest so I’m happy to see them on this list too.
I love anise and licorice notes so I was intrigued by Hexensalbe. I would like to enter this giveaway as I am in Illinois, US.

  • Risk and Raque have made several lists. I’ll be sure to make a point to sample them in the near future. lf chosen, IV Kajal. US

  • I enjoyed reading Danu’s and Rachel’s selections of Top 10 Perfumes of 2023. They have a great sense of smell and taste, and I appreciate their insights and descriptions of each fragrance. I’m especially intrigued by Rise by AKRO and Cuir de Russie by Chanel. They sound like sophisticated and elegant scents that I would love to try. Thank you for sharing your passion and expertise with us!
What a wonderful article! Danu and Rachel have chosen some amazing perfumes for 2023. I admire their knowledge and enthusiasm for the art of perfumery. I’m curious about Hey Jude by Aftelier Perfumes and L’Air du Désert Marocain by Tauer Perfumes. They seem to capture the beauty and complexity of nature in a bottle. I hope to sample them soon. Thanks for this inspiring and informative post!
This is a fantastic list of perfumes for 2023. Danu and Rachel have a keen eye and nose for quality and originality. I learned a lot from their reviews and recommendations. I’m interested in Vaudou by Alexx & Anton and C’est Rebelle by Anthologie. They sound like unique and modern fragrances that I would enjoy wearing. Congratulations on this excellent article! I live in Trzebnica, Poland, EU. I’d love to win Kajal IV

  • AromaDulce73 says:

So many fragrances it can be overwhelming. Hope to one day attend a few of these perfume events. I’m a fan of Meo Fusciuni, I have one of his fragrances that I discovered when I was in Sorrento Italy. Kajal Perfumes is a house I’ve been seeing a lot of lately and I’m definitely curious to get my nose on their fragrances. There are a few other names I have my eye on like Filippo Sorcinelli & Darren Alan. Let’s not forger For the Scent of It, Michael Schrammel. I have his discovery set and all I can say is “Dreaming in Oud”. Wow!

Thanks for sharing this list. Kajal IV would be my choice.

    Los Angeles Ca. USA

  • I’m really pleased to see small independent brands like St. Clair, Parfums Quartana, and Darren Alan on this list. Forest of the Golden Dream is at the top of my list to try (always love forest- inspired scents!) and Targhee Forest was lovely though I prefer to smell it on partner. I also really love Rachel’s focus on perfumes that “deconstruct pe-existing forms and reimagine them in a way that fractures categorization”. After sampling as much as I have, I am honestly most intrigued by perfumes that people have trouble describing, or that shapeshift and appear differently to different people. Stora Skuggan Hexensalbe seems that way to me – I love its notes individually (tuberose! absinthe!) but have never seen them together before. If I am lucky enough to win I would choose Hexensalbe. I’m in MN, USA.

  • Love the lists! Several new (to me) houses to look for.
The Kajal scent would be my choice if selected.
    Oklahoma USA

  • Wow!! Meo fusciuni Viole Nere for the win again. Risk and Black Anise too.
This is my favorite so far because of Rachel’s focus on perfume code of ethics and small independents. Kajal IV happy to see because I love Homme II.
    That’s my choice
    USA

  • I know it is so difficult to narrow the list down to just 10 (even with honorable mentions) and both Rachel and Danu did such an amazing job covering a huge range of beautiful scents! I especially appreciate Danu’s choice of Giuseppe Imprezzabile as perfumer of the year. His work just gets better and better and I can’t wait to see what he brings us in 2024. There are plenty of scents I need to add to my “to try” list here. The new Stora Skuggan is one that I’m most interested in since I’ve been a fan of their work since early on. Thanks such a wonderful read and for the draw. US.

  • My wishlist is getting longer. There are so many new fantastic fragrances to try. I liked that both Rachel and Danu have wine tasting in common. Risk and Black Anise caught my attention early on and I’m happy to see them mentioned. If lucky, I’d choose Hexensalbe. Thanks for the opportunity. Mich USA

  • Danu Winemaker and Rachel the sommelier what an inspiring pairing. Each perfume featured very well curated. Interesting Amouage included, all others very small indies.
Thavks to Fragrance Vault – great selections there for Hexensalbe.
    Exciting

  • Being a tailor, who went through a lot, i was apprentice for many years before I even started calling myself a tailor I’d like to say I’m exactly on the same page with Danu about everything AI , from images to future AI’s even creating fragrances. I cherish the classic forms thinking as Hard work pays off, instead of asking AI what and how to do , and blindly following its guidance.
I wasn’t able to travel a lot this year, at least Danu did
-Meo Fusciuni Viole Nere charisma is appealing to me. Some light, but mostly darker notes and tones are effectively used by aromatorio ,at the same time I find the fragrance not gloomy, but tranquil.
-Jorum Studios Scottish Odyssey is highly nuanced boozy vanilla
-Kajal Perfumes Homme IV sounds really good , very much a refined yet valiant fragrance, with some classy leather , boozy sweetness, cassis, and dates . The quality of Homme IV is definitely there , and I can’t stop admiring the designer’s work , Kajal hired someone very talented , astonishing work again.
-Calaj Perfumes Delizia Oscura is chocolate and coffee gourmand that impressed Danu
Rachel K. Ng is found of what Karl Topham was speaking of earlier, basically dusting off artisanal offerings, something perfume lovers like Rachel is craving.
-Anjali Under the Mango Tree is unique fragrance with chamomile, rose and mango
-Les Indemodables Patchouli I own, rich and woody aroma, with dried cherries, brandy and sweet tobacco dry down. Confident fragrance, for a confident person.
Danu made think of a future classic coming from the desert, and the palm trees, Kajal IV would be great.
Thank you Danu Seith-Fyr, Rachel K. Ng, Fragrance Vault, Kajal Perfumes

  • Kajal 4 I know must be a stunner. I’ve never had the pleasure of trying the brand but you hear alot about Lamar and Faris. Others seems like there hardly mentioned. I’m confident this is high quality with top notch performance as well. Would love to add this to my collection and find a place for it in my heart. Thank you. From Jacksonville NC.

  • Wonderful post! Danu, I completely agree with your sentiments regarding AI. I am choosing to be a Fuddy duddy as well. 🙂 Intriguing TOP 10 from you both! I want to sample them all.-especially Stora Skuggan Hexensalbe. I’ve heard great things about this witch inspired flying ointment potion. Please enter me in the draw. I live in the US.

  • Thank you Danu & Rachel for your list. I would choose Kajal. This fragrance house has so many wonderful fragrance and the bottles are a work of art. USA

  • Thanks to Rachel and Danu who have curated such a diverse and intriguing list of fragrances for the top picks of 2023! I’m struck by the depth and range they’ve explored in selecting these scents.

For instance, Stora Skuggan Hexensalbe, as described, seems to be super charming narrative of an ancient flying ointment utilized in European witchcraft. The idea of crafting a fragrance around such a mystical and historically intriguing concept is fascinating. It’s as if the perfume is not just a scent, but an evocative experience tapping into cultural histories and herbal traditions. I wish I could try it!

I’m also drawn to the innovative approaches in fragrances like Wit & West The Violetear, which delves into the world of iris flowers and their scents, challenging the notion that they lack fragrance. The meticulous extraction process, taking two years to capture the essence, speaks volumes about the dedication and commitment to reimagining floral scents. This exploration of lesser-known olfactory dimensions sounds captivating and refreshing.

Overall, the list seems to celebrate perfumes that go beyond the ordinary, exploring uncharted territories, blending history, nature, and innovation to create such beautiful fragrances!

I live in the EU (Germany) and would be happy and grateful to win a 100ml bottle of Kajal IV.

  • The definition “wearable art” is beautiful, the perfume represents what we are.
The continuous research and selection of these brands to amaze and excite is commendable.
Perfume is also an escape from reality, it allows you to dream. Cafleurebon gives everyone a dream, an emotion through his stories. Thank you
My choice is Kajal IV, the dream continues…..
    Linda (EU)

  • How could I not include this daring and evocative composition in my Top 10, I am sure many others will do the same. Risk took our perceptions of Oud and grabbing us by the wrist took us on a whirlwind adventure where all manner of unseen vistas opened in front of us. Facets revealed within this masterly blending of six ouds, previously unknown, shocking and surprising. The supporting cast allowed oud to escape its dirtier past and revel in heights of floral and waxy delight, I am constantly surprised by this perfume, it is a work of brave geniuses. I am intrigued by Risk and Danus pick just because of the use of six ouds. of everything I want to see more of in fragrance, especially ethical practices in materials and supply chain. At the end, we are given a gorgeous and innovative perfume bringing new life to a classic material (patchouli) and introducing the first commercial scent to use hazelnut. Another great pick by Rachel. If I am lucky to win I would love to win Kajal IV. Thanks a million from the UK

  • departing from the weighted accumulation of past experiences. A great choice by Danu really fascinated by the notes especially Leather. Woods and musk.known for his liquid conversations with past and present, this fragrance explores Manuel Cross’s skills as a cartographer. A beautiful description by Rachel Targhee Forest is really living breathing embodiment translated into a bottle. If I am successful I would love to win Kajal IV. Thanks a lot from the UK

  • Id like to win Kajal IV. This was detailed overview of all the beautoful 2023 scents and noses. Love the mix between experomental and old school. Im from eu

  • I am in the U.S. and would love to win Hexensalbe.

So many great selections, and so happy to see Meo Fusciuni again with Viole Nere. I just used the last of my sample and boy, did I smell great yesterday!

I was especially intrigued by the addition of Parfumeurs du Monde Albedo on here. Dark notes transitioning into lighter notes? Wow. I work with imagery and albedo is a measurement of how much light is reflected off a surface. Snow has high albedo, soil has low albedo. So you can imagine how this perfume is calling my name…

  • This has certainty been a good year for perfume, loads of big brands releasing fragranc . Some of them I now have on my list to test out. I appreciate that they each showcase a different note, so they can suit various preferences. This is the first year that I have been paying close attention to CeFleurBon and I admire the variety of each contributor’s selections. I would love to win Kajal IV by Kajal Perfumes, from NYC USA.

  • ianbradleyandrews says:

This is an awesome article to read as I don’t get to smell many if any of the perfumes. ALOT of them have a theme of transporting the smeller somewhere. I love perfumes like that. I’d LOVE to win stora skugan. I love that brand. I live in Indiana.

  • Fantastic selections Danu and Rachel!
Danu, I got my nose on Abel Black Anise and I so agree with you that the cacao and blackcurrant is both alluring and addictive. I really was pleasantly surprised how those two notes took such a strong role over anise.
Rachel, Stora Skuggan’s Hexensalbe is indeed a mossy masterpiece, and I love the combination of wormwood and salty licorice. There is something dark and tempting about this one, and this would be something a perfect addition to anyone’s Winter fragrance wardrobe.

I would love to win Stora Skuggan Hexensalbe!

  • Every nose is a different world, and it’s reflected in Danu and Rachel’s lists.

Very unique, distinctive, and attractive at the same time.
It also speaks how the niche fragrance world has grown exponentially, with so many houses and fragrance styles.

Kajal IV would be a lovely addition to my collection.

  • “I continue to hold fast to my ever-shrinking ground of writing and imagery that is not AI constructed, I have vast trepidations, for I believe in the human endeavor to create, that has its origins in soul nature, which takes time, effort and creative thinking, I also believe we will return to the classic forms eventually as all in life is cyclic. So, a Fuddy duddy I will continue to be.”

Applauses to Danu , THE BEST thing I’ve read today !!! I need to know who , a person composed certain fragrance, who through blood sweat and tears made it happen. With the rapid development of AI soon some corporative guy ,with no idea of perfumery could “tell” the AI “I need coniferous and boozy fragrance, make it opulent” and AI would need 2 seconds to “give” him the the list. In a few years human perfumers may not be needed at all , such ideas are making me mad and sad at the same time.
Not to mention I’m happy Danu is back to Cafleurebon crew .
As usual I’ll share my thoughts on the fragrances I know, or want to try and compare them with what Danu and Rachel are getting.
Meo Fusciuni Viole Nere , composed by Guiseppe Imprezzabile is not a linear violet fragrance , makes me feel like I’m walking through Mirkwood from J.R.R. Tolkien legendarium with rose , jasmine, cassis and cognac.
Azman Perfumes Risk, composed by Antonio Gardoni, knowing his work i was expecting super animalic fragrance, but in my opinion the fragrance is not as scary as i thought it would be. The variety of ouds is special, there’s booze , incense too , and I think the funky part is coming not from the ouds , but from civet and the musk , more sweaty than barnyard oudy.
Jorum Studios Scottish Odyssey Spiritcask , composed by Euan McCall
Interesting is a good way fragrance, it is well made boozy whiskey, chamomile and cocoa concoction. Smells like , if such thing even existing a cocktail with the 3.
Kajal Perfumes Homme IV, composed by Kevin Mathys … I mean i thought it’s Homme IV , but I guess it’s just Kajal IV
Comfortable high quality leather, rum , well dosed sweetness, more fruity than musky cassis and woody nuances in the base. Jaw dropping mysterious fragrance, it really is. I also , unlike Danu I get hefty dose of cardamom on my skin.
Calaj Perfumes Delizia Oscura , composed by Flavius Cajal i can’t go wrong with dark chocolate and coffee
Les Indemodables Patchouli Noisette, composed by Antoine Lee
The material may be classic , but I believe the fragrance is modern day patchouli with more woody , and cherry pipe tobacco drydown
Kevin Mathys Kajal IV I’d like to win
All profiles I already follow, @waltherp99bg

  • With immense pleasure I find Meo Fusciuni Viole Nere and Risk from Azman in almost all the top ten lists. And I am flying soon to Poland to buy both. Thank you Dan and Rachel and all of you at Cafleurebon for inspiring my travels, and giving them a new dimension. Kajal would be my pick, if I were to win here.

    I live in Portugal.

  • As I read the best lists, I discover the new temptations and new fragrances to explore. Thank you for the beautiful descriptions.
I am in the US and am interested in Hexaensable.

    Hello from UK
The tired of AI , and believe in human endeavor to create year of Danu , and look for more independent and artisanal offerings year of Rachel K. Ng is consisted of
Azman Perfumes Risk I’ve seen videos of Azman fragrances on YouTube, Redolessence also spoke of Majnoon highly in one of his Top 10 videos, but at least for now Azman fragrances are not available in UK.When I read six natural ouds and civet I immediately thought how wearing Risk would be a difficult task …
Jorum Studios Scottish Odyssey Spiritcask the Scottish oak barrels and vanilla
Kajal Perfumes Homme IV . There are a couple of things I find particularly attractive in Kajal IV , Danu captivating review, the never ending nomadic exoticism and African Savanah triggers, leather and dates magical combination
Calaj Perfumes Delizia Oscura new to the brand, need more information about this
Les Indemodables Patchouli Noisette classic hazelnut and patchouli
Happy owner of Lamar + Almaz , and thanks to Danu please count me in for Kajal IV
    Thank you kindly

  • Ohhh what great reviews and how many new ideas for trying! Thanks for that, first of all! I LOVE Both selwctions and there are manh perfumes that I really liked this year: byzantine amber, delizia oscura, kajal IV… I think I could not decide which of this 2 selwctions IS better for me since Both are just amazing!

I am writing from Spain (EU) and would like to participate for winning the bottlel of KAJAL.

Thank you very much again for this stunning blog!

  • Hey, I’m Bartek from the EU, and I’m all about that Kajal IV vibe. Tried a bunch of scents from these cool folks but never went for the full bottle. The description sounds like it could be my jam with cardamom, thick leather, and awesome dates mixed with vanilla. If luck’s on my side, winning and snagging my own bottle would be freaking awesome! Cheers from the EU! <3

  • Regis Monkton says:

I’m intrigued to try Stora Skuggan Hexensalbe, and I hope to win a bottle of it. I’m interested in trying the entirety of Rachel’s list of fragrances, and it reminds me that Parfums Quartana Forest of the Golden Dream is the fragrance release from 2023 which I’m most intrigued to try. Also, I appreciate Danu’s reminder that I’d like to try the collected works of Extra Virgo and Rubini. I live in the U.S.A.

  • Thank you for these lists! I haven’t smelled most of them – and I haven’t even heard of several. Both Danu and Rachel beautifully describe their choices. I was happy to see Hexensalbe on Rachel’s list – I have tried a sample from it and I really love it. I also love Stora Skuggan’s bottle design, and I would be elated to win a bottle of this. (Also, thanks for the reminder that I have been wanting to order a sample of St. Clair Call me!) I am in NY, USA.

  • I agree with Rachel’s interest in perfume that expands the boundaries of fragrance art and in particular those that feature post-modern deconstruction. In a world of flankers, I look for compositions that dare to try something new, often by breaking it all apart and re-building in an innovative way. I read about Stora Skuggan Hexensalbe on CaFleureBon a few months ago and was impressed by the whimsy in formulating a reconstruction of a hallucinogenic flying potion. Would love to try it myself. I’m in MD, USA.

  • If I have to summarize for the fourth time today the amount of pleasing to the eyes, and mind fragrance information I’ll start with the interesting topic Danu Seith-Fyr brought. AI has some undeniable advantages in terms of linguistics , translations , behavioral analysis and so on , but when it comes to fragrances me personally I don’t want to wear a fragrance made my some ultra sophisticated algorithm.
Meo Fusciuni Viole Nere is a vamp style of fragrance
Azman Perfumes Risk feels trailblazing , like a perfume I’d never forget . More than playful , than lustful fragrance with different varieties of natural oud, hypnotic musk and a bit of resinous sweetness.
Jorum Studios Scottish Odyssey Spiritcask .I’m fresh to Jorum Studio . Cacao rum , cognac , woods and caramelized smell further adding to the intricacy of the fragrance.
Kajal Perfumes Kajal IV .Such an interesting, adventurous, and at the same time sophisticated fragrance, I can make a statement wearing Homme IV. Danu review was like a fairy tale from the Middle East , with dates , leather , palm trees and reasonable amount of sweetness.
Anjali Under the Mango Tree healing through chamomile and mango
Les Indemodables Patchouli Noisette is appealing to me because the authentic patchouli made with ethical practices.
My favorite Kajal fragrance is Joorie, high quality spicy sweet rose ,with honey , If lucky I’d like to win Kajal IV
    Thanks for the draw

  • These end of year lists are great!
I can check what it was the notable releases of this year that will end soon.
And I’ve been disconnected from new releases, that a lot of them are new brands/houses
I enjoyed reading the list and would like to try /win something.
The one that sounds amazing is the Amouage Lineage, well actually all of them look awesome…
    I live in the US

  • My favorite from this impressing list you put together in this article is Amouage Lineage. I agree that Amouage are top-tiers when it comes to representing the spirit of the oriental dream and their take on frankincense is simply divine! Lineage is more like a mystical experience, a fragrance for the soul.
Please count me in for this fabulous draw. I am in Europe so I qualify only for Ajmal.
Thanks and good luck to everyone!

  • Danu ♥️Totally vibing with your choices. Can’t wait to see more of you! Extra Virgo Oracle, Meo Fusciuni Viole Nere, Abel Black Anise, Iconofly Personne just to mention a few but all of them are now on my neverending list.
Hi Rachel I adore some of your choices that inspire calm and presence healing: Call Me by Diane, Anjali Under the Mango Tree , Parfums Quartana Forest of the Golden Dream, Amouage Lineage and of course Le Jardin Retrouvé Osmanthe Liu Yuan.
I would love to win a bottle of Kajal IV.
    Hugs from Romania

  • Thank you Danu and Rachel for compiling your lists. I’ve always been interested in the intersection between wine/food and perfumery. I love how Aether Arts as a house explores fragrance as a medium for art. Similarly, Danu describes Stephane as an explorer in the olfactive. Would love to try some of his creations one day. Thanks for the opportunity to win Kajal IV. Based in the UK.

  • So many scents I haven’t tried nor heard of and they all sound stupendous! I’ve been exploring older frags this year. I missed the giveaway (drats!) for the Abel Black Anise which was recommended to me by a few folks after I spilled 5 spice powder on myself and loved it.

I grow wormwood for the scent snd who wouldn’t be curious what “hallucinogenic flying ointment” smells like!?

FYI- I couldn’t sign in, am registered, and when I tried to reset my password I got a “fatal error” message multiple times.

Love these lists. And if I wasn’t clear, if I had to choice one to win it would have to be the Stora.

Snd oh that Forest of a Dream sounds like a -dare I say it – blind buy. Oh dear!

  • I very like these lists too. I really enjoyed to read the descriptions one by one. If I would be the lucky winner, my choice is Kajal IV. Thank you for the draw. I live in Europe.

  • I passed on testing on skin Forest of the Golden Dream. Now I need to go test on skin. I am still kicking myself for not going to a local even when Giuseppe came to speak. Disco Queen still sounds good even though I will be sipping champagne from my sofa on New Year’s. I had forgotten about Delta of Venus and that guava note. Need to test that one again. Happy New Year!!! USA Oh, I’d love to be the lucky winner of the mossy masterpiece Hexensalbe.

  • Great list (based of what I’ve read) and very fun for keeping up on this year’s fragrance hits. Meo Fusciuni seems to be a hit this year with its presence on so many lists, and we’ll deservingly so do their concepts and quality. A lot of unfamiliar fragrances this time, so will be adding these to the list of must tries, but they all sound incredible in their own manner based on Danu and Rachel’s descriptions. Would love to have Kajal IV if I were to win, but would be delighted with either.
    From US.

  • After the great comparison Karl Topham made in his take on 10 Best of 2023 , Danu Seith-Fyr followed with a great take on her own. I’m not a fan of anything AI constructed, staring with images and definitely do not want AI in perfumery. Around 85% or my hundreds of bottles collection is comprised of gourmands , even if it’s some spectacular new AI constructed gourmand, i don’t want it.
☆ Jorum Studios Scottish Odyssey Spiritcask i sampled a few months back, Whiskey Chocolate Cake , with Baileys Mousse .
    ☆ Kajal Perfumes Kajal IV
It’s almost like Kajal IV was made for me. When I read about Danu speaking of the the desert, adventures , symbolism of number 4 , i felt like Kajal IV is beautiful desert like continuation of my two favorites from Kajal, Dahab and Lamar.
Other than palm trees and dates Kajal IV also carries nutty sweetness , and it’s a bit boozy too.
Casablanca, Morocco, eating Dates , Pistachio and Cardamom Cake, drizzled with Rum, while sitting on a leather couch is what I’m thinking right now.
Calaj Perfumes Delizia Oscura I’m now aware of the brand at all
☆ Les Indemodables Patchouli Noisette smells like Dark Chocolate Hazelnut Cake , with Bourbon Soaked Cherries on top. I believe Rachel K. Ng perceives the fragrance differently.
I’ll be happy to win Kajal IV
Appreciate the hard work , Danu Seith-Fyr honesty about AI , reading about your best, and the giveaway campaign

  • Another list where almost everything is new to me, on my to-try resolution for 2024. Besides the Amouage which is a more popular house, at least for me, many of the others I have not even heard of, so I need to start taking notes. Many times we tend to go for popular brands, either because other told us so, or because they are more accessible, but if you dig a little bit, you can find true gems. No gold nugget or diamond are found on the street, just walking by it. You need to search, you need to inform yourself. Hopefully, that is what I am going to do in 2024- start exploring small, not so popular, houses, to find that one diamond that will shine in my perfume wardrobe.

EU reader here, so my pick is Kajal. Thanks and Happy 2024 to everyone!

  • Thank you for the amazing list Danu and Rachel. 2023 was a great year for perfumery. The covid days seem gone and the joy in the aromas is now back again.
I have to admit that I didn’t know many of the fragrances listed but surely I will take a look or a sniff on all of them.
I hope I win Stora Skuggan because is totally seems like a fantastic fragrance and something different from everything else.
    USA, VA here.

  • All in all the two adepts Danu Seith-Fyr and Rachel K. Ng are found of the new fragrances they discovered in 2023 , although Danu is displeased by the replacing the human factor with AI , by the i feel exactly the same way. Never been to a fragrance event before. Rachel is looking for more artistic fragrances.
Out of all the best of choices they made i have smelled only Amouage Lineage
I’m curious about, on Danu Seith-Fyr side
Jorum Studios Scottish Odyssey Spiritcask because of boozy woody Scottish report
Kajal Perfumes Kajal IV due to its mysterious essence, it blends Middle Eastern culture with gastronomy. The leather, woods and dates I’d embrace myself.
Calaj Perfumes Delizia Oscura due to most incredible gourmand report
    On Rachel K.Ng side
Antoine Lie’s ethically sourced Les Indomedables Patchouli Noisette because of earthy, boozy hazelnut-patch report
The traveling companion to adventurous Kajal IV I’d enjoy the most
    Much obliged

  • Parfums Quartana Forest of the Golden Dream continues to be a fragrance I would love to try, and the description/review of it in thus post reinforces that. The expected forest notes described alongside “golden solar radiance” gets me excited for its brightness. I would love to win Kajal I. I live in CT, US.

  • Cool that there’s no overlap between these two varied and interesting lists.

I appreciate that Danu called out artisanal perfumery, which includes some of my absolute favorite (very small) brands—many of which are consistently surprising and daring. She reminded me to seek out a sample of Viole Nere (sounds like Meo Fusciuni is one to watch), Black Anise, Spiritcask, and Byzantine Amber, all of which were highlighted in earlier lists. The golden pastoral smells of Rubini Odenaturae are intriguing, as is the flipped olfactory pyramid of Parfumeurs du Monde Albedo.

From Rachel’s list, I’m interested in the sharp herbal tonic of Hexensalbe, “ecosystem in a bottle” Targhee Forest and the intricate Forest of the Golden Dream (both of which sound more wearable than many conifer fragrances), and the vibrant Amouage Lineage. Also, I agree about Under the Mango Tree; it’s wonderfully calming and textured.

I’m in the USA. I’d love to win the Stora Skuggan Hexensalbe. Thanks!

  • Yesterday i watched documentary on one the biggest German TV’s about AI , in particular its future usage in the medical field and pharmaceutical industry. Some of the biggest pharmacies here are currently working on AI “solution” to permanently replace all pharmacists in a few years , how about NO? I’m totally against AI ,and I’ll never buy a fragrance if made by AI.
    Azman Perfumes Risk (Antonio Gardoni):
I think Risk pays homages to all natural oud lovers worldwide, extrait with 25% concentration, 6 natural ouds , smoke , medicinal and animalic touches , spooky fragrance
Jorum Studios Scottish Odyssey Spiritcask (Euan McCall):
    Ghostly vanilla and oak barrels
Kajal Perfumes Kajal IV (Kevin Mathys)
I already wear Kajal Homme (I) on almost all occasions, 3 bottles i bought in US , and recently my fourth from Ausliebezumduft , one of premier German niche boutiques. It’s one of my staples, and I know I’ll buy 5th too.
It seems to me Kajal IV is high end , refined and alluring upscale fragrance with some nomadic exoticism . The good thing is that Kajal IV changes quite a bit, something I nourish . Palm trees, leather, sweetness from the dates and woods , the fragrance sounds captivating. As usual Kajal heavy metal caps, and the whole presentation is top notch
    Danu Seith-Fyr
    XX
Amouage Lineage (Karine Dubreuil-Sereni) resinous incense magic?
Antoine Lie’s Les Indomedables Patchouli Noisette is environmentally responsible earthy ,boozy hazelnut patchouli
    Sandy Lundberg
    Kajal IV is my choice
    Thanks to all involved

Danu’s and Rachel’s selections attest to the fact that 2023 was a great year for fragrances. Artistry is definitely alive in the world of perfume. As always, I appreciate these lists to discover under-the-radar fragrances. From Danu’s list, I am gong to seek out Odenaturae. From Rachel’s list, I will look for Forest of the Golden Dream.
I was happy to see Amber Jobin receive recognition from Rachel as perfumer of the year. I tried Amber’s Kittens and Cream and I loved it so much.
If I were to win the draw, I would choose Hexensalbe.
    I live in the USA.

  • Originality and creativity in approaching fragrance in 2023 seems to be a theme. Variations are interesting to smell, especially in the niche market. I cannot wait to try Stora Skuggan Hexensalbe. The descriptions have fascinated me and I was excited to see that on a favorites list. I would choose this one! USA

  • What a read !!!
Call us dinosaurs , but like Danu Seith-Fyr I’m firmly against everything AI . I’d like to visit one of the major fragrance events myself this year.
Meo Fusciuni Viole Nere Shadows… everything is leading to a cryptic message you have to discover for yourself.
What i like in Jorum Studio Spiritcask is parity between its creativity and wearability.
Kajal Perfumes Kajal IV i believe is fragrance with a strong character , filled up with the best of the best spices , rum , leather , dates , and other ingredients. Well dosed sweetness is always appreciated, if it’s not rotting tooth sweetness, thankfully it’s not. The unique palm flower i think will make Kajal IV bit more livelier.
Calaj Perfumes Delizia Oscura never heard of Calaj Perfumes before, will look for more information
Anjali Under the Mango Tree fruity floral fragrance , also mossy
Les Indemodables Patchouli Noisette boozy patchouli made with ethnicity sourced ingredients
I’d prefer Kajal Perfumes Kajal IV
    Exciting giveaway, USA
    Regards

  • These lists are such a delightful read — thank you Danu & Rachel! Some of my own favorites from this year, mentioned here, are Eris’s Delta of Venus & Jorum Studio’s Spiritcask. I’ve explored a lot of Euan McCall’s fragrances this year, with Jorum & Senyôko, & find them wonderful. Hexensalbe sounds fantastic — I’ve been looking for a green scent for the cold & would choose that if I’m lucky enough to win. I’ve tested Stora Skuggan’s fragrances before & find myself drawn to the ones that play with spicy notes, as in Silphium & Fantome de Maules.

  • Another year has ended , I enjoyed learning about Danu Seith-Fyr and Rachel K. Ng 23′ best and I’ll try to express my opinion on the topic.
About AI, if the human factor is missing I’m out , definitely not a fan .
    ■ Meo Fusciuni Viole Nere dark forest and violets
    ■ Thomas de Monaco Fuego Futuro solar infused herbals leaving trace on the sand
    ■ Abel Odor Black Anise cold medicinal dryness with bitter cocoa
    ■ Jorum Studios Scottish Odyssey Spiritcask ghostly vanilla coming from Scotland

    ■ Parfums Quartana Forest of the Golden Dream enchanted forest with pine needles and incense

  • I’m enjoying these lists a lot and love getting caught up on new scents to look into. From the list above, I’m excited to look into Call Me for a moody deep scent. Hexensalbe also sounds very interesting, and I’m curious to know what a licorice, vermouth, herby scent would be like to wear. Definitely Hexensalbe would be my choice. I am a reader in FL, US

Kajal is one of my favorite brands, indicate fragrances with unique genetic core , long lasting and with one of a kind bottles. Based on Danu Seith-Fyr view Kajal IV impressed me with the sense of exoticism, richness made of dates , palm trees, leather and musk.
Calaj Perfumes Delizia Oscura who could say to dark chocolate and coffee?
Anjali Under the Mango Tree I’d play under the mango tree of my youth
Les Indomedables Patchouli Noisette classic patchouli , hazelnut made to smell up to date
    Kajal IV is my choice
    Thanks a bunch

  • I have been very curious about Viole Nere since its release and Danu’s review just confirms I need to try it ASAP. I have not tried Fuego Futuro yet, but I have tried Thomas de Monaco’s other new releases, which are beautiful. I am delighted to see Odenaturae on Danu’s list; it’s a gorgeous green fragrance. Spiritcask was also one of my favorites from 2023; it’s such a cozy and comforting fragrance. Danu’s honorable mentions are all great choices and I’m not surprised to see another vote for Francesca Bianchi.

I have yet to try Hexensalbe, although it’s right up my alley. It sounds like a truly bewitching scent. I have also been curious about The Violetear since I love purple florals. I always love seeing DSH on people’s favorites lists as she is one of my favorite perfumers. I enjoyed reading about Rachel’s choices, as well as her honorable mentions. Rachel’s choice for best perfumer of the year makes me want to try Aether Arts even more. I am a bit embarrassed to admit that I have not tried any of her fragrances, but they are very appealing. Kittens & Cream sounds especially comforting.

Thank you, Danu and Rachel, for your top ten fragrances of 2023. Thank you to Jana (Fragrance Vault) and Kajal for the generous giveaways! I would love to win Stora Skuggan Hexensalbe and I am located in the USA.

  • Let the Top 10 of 2023 games … continue
Round 6 : Danu Seith-Fyr (France) vs Rachel K. Ng (Midwest USA)
Variety is a factor in both contributors picks. After reading the article I can say i like Danu and Rachel picks equally
Out of Danu Seith-Fyr Top 10 I like
Jorum Studios Scottish Odyssey Spiritcask – highly nuances Oakes barels, vanilla
    Kajal Perfumes Homme IV –
I’m sure I wouldn’t be able to surprise anyone on a blog for fragrance experts and enthusiasts , but I own 2 Kajal fragrances already Lamar and Almaz.
Homme IV is almost esoteric, zephyrs carrying , leather, palm flower, davana and some dates , the horizon is already trembling in my eyes
Out of Danu Seith-Fyr honorable mentions I like
Calaj Perfumes Delizia Oscura can’t say no to a dark coffee and a block of chocolate
Out of Rachel K.Ng Top 10 I like
Le Jardin Retrouve Osmanthe Liu Yuan-powdery leather, apricots build on ancient traditions
Out of Rachel K.Ng honorable mentions I like
Eris Parfums Delta of Venus – ripe tropical fruits, jasmine and musky homage
Les Indomedables Patchouli Noisette- the first commercial scent to use hazelnut, there’s also patchouli and carrying for environment approach.
My pick is 100ml of Kajal Perfumes Kajal IV
    Thank you, and fingers crossed

  • For the Best of 2023 fragrances Danu Seith-Fyr and Rachel K.Ng observations are based on AI taking over, artisanal perfumery, Inclusivity and Diversity, Remastering classic ingredients, Global fragrance exhibitions .
On Christmas eve I found out that my uncle who spent last 17 years working as a doorman in 5* hotel was fired because the newest AI based HR assistance program, apparently the AI suggested he’s no longer needed, and it’s liability for the hotel, no need for mind reading device to know where I stand about all AI related. Thank you Danu for speaking up.
Out of all the picks , including honorable mentions I’m interested in
Kajal Perfumes Kajal IV because such fragrances could easily become emotional triggers. I could emphasize to Kajal IV, charismatic fragrance that could easily lift my spirits up. I like the spice market sentiment, with leather, dates and the gorgeous bottle.
Calaj Perfumes Delizia Oscura chocolate and coffee, you’re welcomed
Anjali Under the Mango Tree mental healing fragrance with mango and rose
My preference would be Kajal Perfumes Kajal IV
Thank you for your 2023 observations , and the generosity

  • Utmost respect for people who have high standards , and want to smell good yet unique. Even more respect to Danu Seith-Fyr for going against the the artificial intelligence drain
Reading hers and Rachel K mini reviews makes me want to smell almost all , and 3 asap
Kajal Perfumes Kajal IV fairytale fragrance, with dates, leather and woods
Calaj Perfumes Delizia Oscura delicious gourmand
Amouage Lineage, Amouage quality is known worldwide
Kajal Perfumes Kajal IV is elaborate fragrance i’d really like to win
    Thank you kindly, from EU

  • Fragrances are signed by perfumers , classically trained or self taught, both are true artists , and AI art is not real art !

“The development of full artificial intelligence could spell the end of the human race… It would take off on its own, and re-design itself at an ever increasing rate. Humans, who are limited by slow biological evolution, couldn’t compete, and would be superseded.” ~Stephen Hawking

My thoughts on the matter, I’ll go even a bit further than Danu , it’s writing and imagery for now. With more than rapid development of AI in a short period of time AI would be able to sign fragrances without any need of human intervention. I love for example to wear future fragrances signed up by the likes of Cécile Zarokian, Dominique Ropion and newcomers like Kevin Mathys, but I’ll never wear a fragrance signed by AI .

    Meo Fusciuni Viole Nere
I like the relaxing , and spiritual properties of Meo Fusciuni’s fragrances, and personality.

Beyonce Naughty Girl comes to mind when I think of Azman Risk

Jorum Studios Scottish Odyssey Spiritcask i bought because of Ida Meister, and her Cafleurebon review

    Kajal Perfumes Kajal IV
Dahab is the only Kajal fragrance I know, it smells like picnic basket full of fruits , juiciness and other surprises. In terms of scent profile Homme IV is unlike Dahab , yet in terms of quality it’s cut from similar elaborate cloth. Leathery , sweet , green , dates fragrance .. here i come mystical aroma from the African desert .
Kajal IV fits me really well , “Lady Boss” fragrance

    Calaj Perfumes Delizia Oscura
Romanian brand with really strong on sillage and longevity fragrances, Delizia Oscura i don’t know but I will sample.

Amouage Lineage mineral ,smoky and quite spicy fragrance

Patchouli Noisette is gorgeous , modern boozy , cherry brandy with dark chocolate patchouli and hazelnuts. I was not aware of the ethical practices but I don’t see the classic thing in it , I believe it’s really modern.
I’d love to win Kajal Perfumes Kajal IV
I do understand I’m a bit late and I’ll be grateful if you count my comment
    Thank you for the opportunity

I love Danu’s and Rachel’s top 10 perfumes for 2023. Parfums Quartana Forest of the Golden Dream sounds very intriguing with a super realistic walking through a forest vibe. Anjali Perfumes Under a Mango Tree sounds very interesting and unique as well and truly amazing. If I win I would love to win Kajal Perfumes IV. I love Kajal Perfumes and own Kajal Perfumes II and several others from the house. I am from the USA.
