“I gathered poets around me and we all wrote beautiful erotica. As we were condemned to focus only on sensuality, we had violent explosions of poetry. Writing erotica became a road to sainthood rather than to debauchery.” ~ Anaïs Nin, quote from Delta of Venus

As soon as I learned of Eris Parfums Delta of Venus, I contacted Creative Director Barbara Herman. The magnetic draw of its concept – and its indomitable literary reference – pulled me into the perfume’s orbit without hesitation. Those of us who came into ourselves during the late 1960s-early 1970s had been thoroughly submerged in the prodigious writings of Anaïs Nin, and I felt intimately affiliated with this oeuvre which inspired Barbara.

Why Delta of Venus, you may well inquire? Why not Little Birds (her second book of erotica, and my favorite of the two), or any number of revelations from her voluminous diaries? Barbara Herman, like myself – is deeply appreciative of pioneers and risk-takers – and Anaïs Nin, the legendary diarist, documenter of societal behavior, art and artists extant in her time, was a prolific writer and keen observer of the human condition. Nin was known for her sensual and sexual curiosity, which she explored, as visualized through the veil of her autobiographical writings and erotica. The phrase ‘delta of Venus’ refers to a Victorian euphemism for female genitalia, first. The text is considered groundbreaking, as it was the first of its kind to push the boundaries of human sexuality as written by a woman, and was considered a magnum opus in this regard. Nin’s initial reluctance is well-documented: we now know that a wealthy Oklahoma oilman, Roy M. Johnson – was an avid collector of pornography/erotica, and offered $1.00/page for sexually explicit narrative, at a time when many writers were going hungry. As Johnson’s evolving tastes led him to demand ever more graphic tales, he insisted that the writers he engaged forgo poetry in favor of detailed sexual description – no analysis, no philosophizing, no poetry. Henry Miller had been offered $100.00/month to provide prurient material, but he was revolted by the idea – and Nin, who was intricately involved with Miller for many years (on a variety of levels) saw this as a method to help assure that Henry’s books were financed. So much for reluctance.

Now that you are a bit familiar with the backstory, let’s proceed with the perfume – which is seditiously delicious in its enthralling perversity. My description is intended as high praise: Eris Parfums Delta of Venus is the kaleidoscopic carnality of Paradise reimagined. The Garden possesses more of a jungle-y feel, in which one bite of the juice-dripping guava presages erotic delight as many-hued as Homer’s rosy fingers of the dawn. This perfume is unequivocal in its provocation: limpid, raw, refined, musky – a veritable riot of ripe fruit wed to an intoxicating jasmine sambac, in which we may discern the possibility of the serpent’s sting, augured by the beautiful poison-green galbanum of which both Barbara and I are so fond. An introductory sulfuric blast of fresh grapefruit may be tonic, but there exists subtext as well; doesn’t Satan leave sulfuric sillage in his wake? Is everything as it appears in the Garden, or have we overlooked something? Delta of Venus is both familiar to our collective unconscious and unknowable, a marvelous fragrant contradiction.

“There is a perfection in everything that cannot be owned.” ― Anaïs Nin, quote from Delta of Venus

Eris Parfums Delta of Venus is about that part of us which can neither be possessed nor tamed. The explosive, effusive wild ride that initially appears upon the skin develops into a sensual and soothing drydown, murmuring of undergrowth and greenery which feels mythical. This is a revelation and no mean feat: we set out upon one fierce journey only to discover that the path has led us to a satisfying respite with a meditative twist. I am thoroughly beguiled, and assure you that Delta of Venus will be among this year’s best fragrances.

Notes: Italian bergamot, American grapefruit, Iranian galbanum, Egyptian violet leaf, Egyptian jasmine sambac, Haïtian vetiver, sandalwood, guava accord made exclusively for Eris Parfums by Antoine Lie (after smelling guavas sent by Barbara).

Sample provided by Eris Parfums – many thanks! It is extraordinary.  My nose is my own…

Thank you for the review of Eris Parfums Delta of Venus, Ida!
This truly seems like a carnal paradise in a bottle, juicy, green, sensual and wild, I would so love to wear this and can only imagine it to be a true masterpiece in perfumery.

  • I have tried the first seven Eris perfumes, and some of them I love! My favorite is the gorgeous Ma Bete, although the salty edged Belle du Jour is growing on me every time I wear it. I am very eager to try Delta of Venus, so many thanks to Ida for this thoughtful review, especially the historical and literary context. This jasmine and fruit garden of a fragrance sounds lovely.

Guava is a note that I’d love to learn more about. I liked the concept of ripe fruit combined with jasmine sambac. I live in Maryland USA.

  • Anais Nin is a hero of mine, and her books have been a constant in my bedroom – under the mattress as a teen and displayed proudly as an adult. The words, “limpid, raw, refined, musky” are speaking to me, and my interest is piqued. Thanks for this opportunity! I’m in Michigan, US

  • I liked that perfumer Antoine Lie created a guava note especially for this fragrance. Thanks for another wonderful review and draw. Mich USA

  • Kate Spritz says:

I love Barbara and Antoine Le’s collaborations. Mx is my favorite. Barbara autographed by bottle. I don’t think I’ve tried a fragrance with guava in it. This is intriguing. xo

  • Ooooh. Well to date my favorite Eris is Nightflower, but Ida’s review—“limpid, raw, refined, musky – a veritable riot of ripe fruit wed to an intoxicating jasmine sambac”—makes me think this could vie for the title as I have a not-very-secret weakness for fruity florals. Totally believe it could be one of the year’s best releases, imaginative, erotic vision for floral fragrances is such a strength of Eris! I’m reading in the U.S., would be so thrilled to have a bottle.

  • FragranceIsMe says:

I had the pleasure of meeting Barbara Herman at Perfumology in Philadelphia. I enjoyed our conversation, as I learned about Eris Parfums and her passion for fragrance.
Two of my favorites creations are Green Spell (a happy Summer garden in a bottle) and Scorpio Rising (beautifully dangerous and addictive).
Ida’s review was quite informative…from the backstory, to the notes and what they represent. I like how she wrapped this wonderful creation into a neat little package described as, “the kaleidoscopic carnality of Paradise reimagined.” 🙂

  • Italian bergamot really sparked my interest because it sounds soothingly refreshing just like a lemonade “berganade” everybody needs in the summertime. I live in Trzebnica, Poland, EU. I don’t have a favorite from ERIS because I never had the pleasure to try this house but if I had to choose I’d probably pick Delta of Venus beacuse of how unique it appears to be.

  • Well doesn’t this one just sound tantalizing? What strikes me about Ida’s review is the explosive and wild opening of fruit and florals. I love Guava as there’s no other tropical fruit quit like it, with its peachy, papaya-y, and subtly creamy combination. I’m exited to see it used here, especially in tandem with one of my favorite bitter greens: galbanum. .I have yet to try anything from ERIS, but have heard great things about Green Spell and Mxxx., so I expect Delta of Venus to be a stunning composition. Best of luck to all. I live in NC, USA.

  • AleksCipri says:

Wow a new release by Eris! What sparks my interest you ask…everything 🙂 I love the brand, I love guavas and I love the work of Antoine Lie. I must admit I have never heard about Anais Non and I was very intrigued reading about the inspiration for this fragrance. I’m from Illinois, US.

  • Oddly, the notes seem less erotic than I expected but still present a beguiling melange. It sounds like something I definitely want to sample! I live in the USA and have never tried an ERIS perfume to date.

  • chrisskins says:

Delta of Venus just has to be sex in a bottle. “Eris Parfums Delta of Venus is about that part of us which can neither be possessed nor tamed.” That’s the part of myself I’ve thought about working through in therapy but wearing it sounds ravishing and much more time-efficient. Hello Egyptian Jasmine Sambac. I live in NY.

  • This sounds like a magnificent fragrance. I love the idea of all the fruits exploding against the bitter green backdrop of galbanum. I imagine will offer a nice dose of carnality to the mix, which I love. The only ones I have tried from this house are Night Flower and Green Spell, which were both great. I would love to get my nose on this one. I live in VA, USA.

  • The imagery as well as the reference to Nin’s erotic writing along with the notes of this perfume seem like they all fit perfectly to create an exotic, lush yet biting impression. Im intrigued but the guava combined with galbanum, jasmine and violet leaf. Thank you for the review and give away. In Brooklyn, NY USA.

  • anaistwin says:

lovely review- very evocative. i absolutely love anais nin’s work and therefore am drawn to anything inspired by her, plus this perfume sounds really enticing. i have been wanting to try eris perfumes, but so far, have not had the chance. therefore i don’t yet have a favorite (yet.)

  • Wonderful article!
Given the name and inspiration for this fragrance, I would have expected something else, perhaps more perverse, animalic or otherwise skanky. So this wild, green, tropical amazonic concoction was a surprise, yet if you think about it, such a logical connection! All sex is born in nature and nothing supports it more than lush, fertile greenery, bountiful with life energy. The guava is a note I am particularly curious about, and I’m sure the supporting grapefruit, jasmine and galbanum only enrich this colorful, juicy scenery.
Please count me in for the travel spray.

…. a marvellous sojourn in the gardens dearest Ida. Delightful.
And this phrase, well just watch this space!!!

‘ Is everything as it appears in the Garden, or have we overlooked something? ‘
Indeed we may, but I say no more…

    Great reading, thank you

Barbara Herman resembles Anais Nin in that photo. An interesting assembley of notes. Perhaps it is a bit like Cacharel Eden, which is the ultimate expression of paradise. Meditative twist? Must be the musk in the end. Nice name and imagery.

  • It was great to read the backstory to this perfume. This is exactly what makes our fragrance hobby…getting a glimps into the mind of the creators. This simply does not exist in mainstream/designer perfumery.
Reading the note breakdown, it all seems to click into place. I am especially interested in the agave note, not something I am familiar with. Thank.

This scent sounds so divine. I have been waiting on this as I love Antoine’s work and love this brand. I would love to win this and I live in Indiana.

  • olgAPOISON says:

I love Anais Nin so much. I loved how honest She was about exploring sexuality. Would love to try something inspired by such an icon. Im from EU.

  • Scentedpapers says:

What a gorgeous review. I love Eris perfumes, in particular Night Flower. I am interested in Lie’s guava accord, which sounds positively mouthwatering. I live in the US. Thank you for the wonderful giveaway.

  • Just a decade ago i read Delata of Venus and the witty eroticism of Anais Nin dazzled me, so i’m so curious to try a prfume inspired by those pages, the carnal drenched olfactory experience . From EU with love!

  • I love a perfume with a literary inspiration or reference, and this one seems like it really does justice to the eroticism and romance of Anais Nin’s work. I’m intrigued by the interplay between the lush sweetness of the guava, the indolic jasmine, and the sharpness of the galbanum; it seems like a fitting combination for Nin’s work. I do not have experience with ERIS Parfums but now my interest is piqued! I am located in New York, in the US. Thank you!

  • I would love to try this one – this sounds like a really interesting take on a fruity frag and I love the back story. I haven’t had the pleasure of trying an ERIS perfume yet.

  • Ida did a fantastic job here. Eris Parfums is one of the best discoveries I did last year. Scorpio Rising is my favorite one so far from the brand.
Delta of Venus seems like a great fragrance for special ocassions. I like that it is raw, limpid and refined. I love musk so this one would be a great addittion to my collection.

  • castlemicro says:

Hello from Florida, and thank you to Ida for the review!

It’s hard to resist the idea of a scent inspired by Anaïs Nin! Delta of Venus sounds like a particularly unique take on the erotic, with fresh jungle notes rather than animalics. I’d really love to give it a try.

  • I ate a lot of guavas growing up. It’s still one of my favorite fruits and the smell of them quite literally fills the room. It’s beautiful, comforting, and sensual. I love that you describe this as something that starts off wild and becomes sensual. If the guava is realistic in this one, it has potential to be one of my favorites.
    I live in Illinois, USA.

  • I’ve loved all the Eris scents I’ve tried, and I also have very fond memories of sneakily reading Delta of Venus when I was young, & then teaching it in a Literature and Sexuality class I TA’d in graduate school. I’ve only recently started enjoying fruity scents (as long as they’re sufficiently weird or green or unsweet), and I love the smell of guavas. My favorite Eris is probably the also very sexy Belle de Jour. I live in NY, USA.

  • Very interesting backstory for the genesis of the novel, Delta of Venus. I’m sure $1/page was a good lure for a starving writer. Ida’s description of the perfume as the kaleidoscope carnality of Paradise reimagined brings up all sorts of images of the garden of eden The variety of fruit, indolic jasmine on a bed of vetiver and sandalwood seems to give the garden more of a jungle feel. I’ve not tried any ERIS fragrances before. I’m in the US.

  • Regis Monkton says:

For a while now, I’ve been interested to try something from Eris Parfums, but I haven’t had a chance to yet. I’ve been very interested in trying Belle de Jour because I’ve heard a lot of praise concerning it. I’m interested in trying “Delta of Venus” because it sounds like another high-quality one from Eris Parfums. I appreciate it that Ida mentions the most prominent notes, i.e. the guava, jasmine, galbanum, and the grapefruit. The guava note seems very enjoyable, and this fragrance could be the first guava-prominent fragrance in my collection. Ida’s review caused me to truly want to try it, e.g. when she says “Delta of Venus will be among this year’s best fragrances.” I live in the U.S.A.

  • Guava is such an unusual note to find in a perfume and everything from Eris is so well-crafted. It sounds like the greenness of Green Spell and the jasmine from Belle de Jour may be in there too, which sounds like an amazing combination! I would love to win a bottle. I’m in MN, USA and my favorite Eris perfume is Night Flower!

  • whimsical diva says:

I got the Eris discovery set two years ago. I’ve been bowled over by the quality and ingenuity of the fragrances. My favorites were Night Flower and Mxxx, though Ma Bete and Belle Du Jour are exquisite too. I’d love to try this new scent.

    I live in California, USA

  • Thx for that review Ida, I’m going to feel like a dirty pervert wearing this one. Eris is one of my favorite house finds of the year…ask me how I feel about Scorpio Rising!!

  • This is my first time i read about Eris Parfums. The guava and italian bergamote sounds like a very good mixture.
    Greetings from Romania, EU!

  • minteacup says:

I’ve only tired Eris Mx. and Mxxx., and both are great, comfortable and warm, but must be very different from Delta of Venus. I’m intrigued by the lush concept for this new perfume and Ida’s description of this one as a “marvelous contradiction” and “provocation.” With such strong notes as galbanum, guava, and jasmine, I am imagining a perfume with a seriously striking emerald/tropical character. I am in the USA, thank you for the draw!

  • Thanks for an amazing review, Ida! Thanks for the brief background of The Delta of Venus. With this book in mind, I’m very intrigued on how this would smell. I like this part of your description – Eris Parfums Delta of Venus is the kaleidoscopic carnality of Paradise reimagined. I haven’t tried any Eris perfume yet. I’d love to win this draw. Thanks for this opportunity. – CA, USA

  • “Seditiously delicious in its enthralling perversity” – sign me up! Sounds even more carnal than Ma Bête or Mxxx, my previous Eris favourite. I’m in the EU.

  • Like so many reviews here at ÇaFleureBon, this review introduced me to an important literary figure. I haven’t read any Anaïs Nin and need to learn more about her work and influence. Delta of Venus is a bold tribute, full of notes symbolic and carnal. While the attention-grabbing guava and fruit notes up front sound like the showstopper here, the drydown sounds equally intriguing. Both sound beguiling.

I’m in the USA. I haven’t tried any ERIS Parfums fragrances—I’d love to try this one.

  • I’m intrigued by the “poison-green galbanum” note juxtaposed with sweeter guava and jasmine notes. I, too, love that kind of urgent green scent. I live in Seattle, WA. I think Mxxx. is my favorite of the Eris line I’ve sampled so far.

  • Beautiful review by Ida of Delta of Venus>What sparked my interest in Delta of Venus is stated, “is the kaleidoscopic carnality of Paradise reimagined.” A green sensual and soothing fragrance that is mythical. Thanks for the opportunity. Greetings and gratitude from the USA.

  • roxhas1cat says:

I love this line. My favorite is Green Spell, so the poison green galbanum note gets my attention. The guava interests me as it’s a fruit I used to pick from the neighbors as a child as they didn’t like them. Thanks for the chance. USA.
