Amouage Odyssey Collection Chapter III – Escape + Introspective Giveaway

Amouage Odyssey Collection Chapter III Escape

Amouage Odyssey Collection Chapter III – Escape Image by Louise Mertens.

Amouage reveals the third chapter of its Odyssey Collection, a quartet of new perfumes portraying Oman’s greatest treasure, Royal Frankincense, in all its complexity. Distilling this propitious moment in time and breathing new life into its iconic legacy, the new Escape chapter of the Odyssey Collection by Amouage adds four new Eaux De Parfum to its compendium of iconic scents. Each creation laces Royal Frankincense with a broad palette of rare ingredients in a deft display of tradition-steeped modernity. By exploring introspective themes, Lineage, Search, Guidance and Purpose speak of escapism, the strive to grow, the search for a new path and the finding of a new life – transformation at last.”  Amouage Press Release, 2023.

When I read the overview of the Amouage Odyssey Collection – Chapter III: Escape, one thought kept repeating over and over in my mind. Our world. This world, full of political unrest and an unpredictable climate makes for uncertain times. People and communities are also out of synchronicity leading to apprehensive spirits. In such times some of us outwardly explore new climates and also self-reflection. Amouage Creative Director Renaud Salmon has struck upon the theme of Escape as a means of introspection and carving out new visions for the brand’s newest collection. An odyssey is essentially a journey, and a journey can take many forms be it physical, emotional or intellectual, these all tie into our own personal voyage of life, I guess it is a central theme of being human. On experiencing Amouage Odyssey Collection, Chapter III I was instantly aware of the core ingredient of each perfume of the quartet, (frankincense) and how it has been utilised in different ways. So, allow me to convey to you dear readers the impression of each new creation in the collection.

Amouage Lineage by Karine Vinchon-Spehner

Amouage Odyssey Collection Chapter III Lineage by Karine Vinchon-Spehner (Robertet) is both meditative and vibrant and this dichotomy did take time to sink into my senses. It presents a duality of freshness and warmth and is slow perfumery done very interestingly. Lineage is a perfume I needed some experience with to unpick and understand. Initially I found it to have an almost spearmint effect on my skin. However, the more time I spent with it the more I began to enjoy the solar, mineral and balsamic facets it contained. Both Renaud Salmon and Karine Spehner Vinchon wanted to convey a clear olfactory message but also bring a surprise to us. I believe they achieved their modus operandi. There is a vivid energetic aspect to Lineage, which comes through the combination of ginger, schinus molle and saffron. The effect is fizzy and fresh (similar to a coastal sea foam) via the use of these metallic spices, and they mingle with the different qualities of incense as the wearing develops. Initially I pick up on the lemony aspects and slowly but surely the more resinous qualities come to the fore and the perfume seems to heat up as it progresses. The heart is abundant with solar energy where frankincense essence, fenugreek and myrrh give an imprint of golden sand, whilst the base is all about resins and an amber similar to a sunset.

Top Notes: Ginger, Sichuan Pepper, Schinus Molle, Saffron;Heart Notes: Frankincense Essence, Fenugreek, Myrrh Essence; Base Notes: Frankincense Resinoid, Myrrh Resinoid, VetiverPatchouli, Benzoin, Labdanum.

Concentration: Eau De Parfum, containing 25% of pure oils.

Perfumer Alexis Grugeon

Amouage Odyssey Collection Chapter III Search Collage by Karl photos from Amouage.

Amouage Odyssey Chapter III Search by Alexis Grugeon (Firmenich), on the other hand was instantly recognisable as a strong citrus / smoky and wood scent, which I was immediately attracted to for its forthright and unapologetic use of zesty, acidic lemon and lime teamed with mandarin which effectively compliments the use of Hojari frankincense and cade. The lemon has a slightly aged leathery and dry component to it, and I found this to work in harmony with the elemi and pepper to bring a unique vibrancy and sturdiness to the composition. This combination was to reflect the Persian black lemons (Limoo Omani) with their thick skins, which dry out in the sun they have a musky tang, which is most likely why the lime and mandarin was used in the top of Search. The transition of Search is a continuation into the deeper smoke and burnt facets of incense and guaiacwood. This is the first perfume I have experienced from Alexis Grugeon and I have been impressed with its commercial appeal whilst still staying true to Amouage’s fundamental concept of quality, storytelling and impact.

Top Notes: Lemon, Lime, Mandarin; Heart Notes: Hojari Frankincense, Black Pepper, Elemi; Base Notes: Cade, Vetiver, Guaiacwood.

Concentration: Eau De Parfum, containing 25% of pure oils.

Aging: Maturation: 4 weeks | Maceration: 4 weeks.

Amouage Guidance by Quentin Bisch

Amouage Odyssey Collection Chapter III Guidance Collage by Karl photos from Amouage.

Amouage Odyssey Collection Guidance by Quentin Bisch (Givaudan) immediately presented me with an ‘Aha’ moment. Bisch has a unique grasp for creating intensely feminine perfumes, which have an underlying sultriness that he seems to master. It has the original Amouage triad of Rose / Frankincense / Ambergris and as such is a homage to the traditions of the brand. However, it bursts forth as a cloud of fruity textures, a fleshy vibration and a silky soft tonality. It creates a dialogue of searching for woman of strength, beauty and fragility. Guidance as the name suggests is a sojourn to this allusive lady, from ivory towers to lush gardens, to her boudoir of jasmine screens. One significant ingredient, which amplifies the smooth facets of the aroma is hazelnut cream. This adds a layer of complexity which acts as the link between the initial allure of pear in Guidance and the intense base of Akigalawood, Ambergris and Vanilla.

Top Notes: Pear, Frankincense, Hazelnut; Heart Notes: Saffron, Rose, Sambac Jasmine, Osmanthus; Base Notes: Cistus, Sandalwood, Akigalawood, Ambergris, Vanilla.

Concentration: Eau De Parfum, containing 25% of pure oils.

Aging: Maturation: 3 weeks | Maceration: 1 weeks.

Amouage Purpose by Quentin Bisch

Amouage Odyssey Collection Chapter III Purpose Collage by Karl photos from Amouage.

Amouage Odyssey Collection Purpose also created by Quentin Bisch, is an expansive, chic but raw interpretation of a frankincense tree alone in the desert, its branches reaching upwards to the sky. This minimalistic image gave Bisch the straightforward formula for Purpose, a vertical idea of contrasting materials. To me it is extremely potent with moss, wood and spice. There is a clear contrast between fresh and dark aspects. Purpose opens with a bracing dynamism brought across with bergamot, pink pepper and pimento berry. The heart is a dry and smoky experience with sand vetiver, papyrus and rose colliding. The base fuses the spicy elements with the Mystikal Molecule (Burning Incense) saffron, suede and Akigalawood.

Top Notes: Bergamot, Pink Pepper, Frankincense, Pimento Berry; Heart Notes: Rose, Sand Vetiver, Sandalwood, Papyrus; Base Notes: Saffron, Suede, Mystikal, Akigalawood.

Concentration: Eau De Parfum, containing 20% of pure oils.

Aging: Maturation: 3 weeks | Maceration: 1 weeks.

Amouage Odyssey Collection Chapter III – Escape works on a multitude of levels from the initial concept and design through to the olfactive experience. It is worth exploring as the collection has great variety running through the overarching view of introspection and escapism. Who knows you might even link the fragrances with your past, present and future?

How fabulous, not eligible as I live in France but safe to say I had the brief encounter with the Escape Collection in duty free in Doha. All stunning, all impeccable, all 4 on my to die for list.

    Great review as ever Karl.
    Bravo Team

  • I’ve had my eye on Guidance since it came out for one sole reason: Almond milk. Its a note that isn’t spoken of much but i continuously notice a trend in my tastes and constantly fall in love with frags with this subtle note. Im not an almond lover but something about the lactonic vibe that it brings makes it just right. Not to mention my perfume husband QB being the artist behind it. I firmly agree with Karl in that Bisch does unique grasp for creating intensely feminine/sultry perfumes So i look forward to having a chance to experience its beauty here in St. Pete, FL.

  • Reading the above each one sounded better than the previous. I was hoping to mind the draw for all four of some size. I was drawn most to
Search because of the citrus/smoky aspect. Search is what I choose for the draw. US

  • Karl you reallly tapped into how the times we live in and these reviews were great and deeply thoughtful.
I think I would like all but choosing one it would be Purpose because the idea of the frankincense tree in the desert is intriguing

  • Karl!!! Love your thoughts & descriptions!!! ❤️❤️❤️ You so rightly point out that mineral metallic solar dance in lineage that I find so enchanting & intoxicating! Bravo! ❤️❤️

This Escape collection sounds to be just what i need in a mentally relaxing and calming fragrance collection. Purpose sounds really nice. Michigan, USA

  • Wow, reading that was like an odyssey in itself! I agree, there seems to be a collective sense of unmooring, as if we are all looking for something more at the same time. I am most drawn to Guidance as I have really been enjoying osmanthus notes lately, and I liked the imagery of jasmine screens and the search for strength, beauty and fragility. Hello from Colorado and thanks for hosting!

Karl did an excellent job of conveying this collection focused around frankincense. I’m most drawn to Purpose, both for the visual of the solitary Boswellia tree reaching for the sky and the base notes. I’m in the US.

  • Love the description, my choice would be Search- a woody citrus, smokey and vibrant is in my wheelhouse. New York, USA

  • Hi what appeals to me of the article is EVERYTHING Amouage. All Incense. I also enjoyed how each perfume was described in alongside their perfumers. I would love to test out Search. I live in Los Angeles CA

  • All four review as intriguing, adventurous and unique, which will make everyone’s attention perk up! But the Lineage description intrigues me most with the notes and fizzy/fresh feel. I live in the US

  • I love hojari frankincense, there is nothing like it. It’s so crisp but smoky and resinous but open. I’m excited for this collection! They all sound amazing especially Search and Guidance. I think if I am lucky enough to win I will choose Guidance.
    Thank you in USA.

  • I loved this presentation for Amouage bottles. The travel vials are the most elegant vials on the market. I love the flow between the notes, name, colors and design of the bottles. Amouage keeps getting better and better when it comes to presentation. They really know how to stand out from a huge variety and offer of perfumes. Guidance would be my choice. It has some of my favorite notes, all wrapped in pink. I live in CA, US

  • Each one of these fragrances sound so different and unique. The description of these fragrances are very detailed which makes it easy to imagine the scent. I think out of these 4 fragrances if I were to win I would pick Amouage Odyssey Chapter III Search based off the woody citrus notes. From TX, USA.

  • Oh my lord this set sounds delicious! I try not to watch the reviews on YouTube about these fragrances, but the note breakdown for search just sounded too good to not read about!

I’d love to win Guidance for my SO. The soft tones with fruity notes would be a great scent for her to try. New Jersey USA

  • I’m a huge fan of Quentin Bisch’s work. I’d love to win Purpose. The story behind each fragrance, as well as the notes, has me intrigued about the whole line. New Jersey, USA

  • I enjoyed getting to know the quartet – in my experience Amouage fragrances tend to be quite a journey and I felt like these reviews gave me a bit of a map of this collection. I would choose Guidance to win. I love the operatic classic intensity of some Amouage perfumes but I’m in the mood for a fruity fleurmand. The combination of pear and hazelnut just sounds so pleasant, I want to melt right into it. I’m in the US, thank you for the draw.

  • The two scents that immediately jump out to me are Search and Lineage.
I love ginger as a note.
    Thanks for the giveaways.

  • Regis Monkton says:

I’m most interested in trying “Search” for multiple reasons, e.g. I can like fragrances which are similar to “New York Intense”. Also, Karl’s review of it made it seem very appealing. I own Amouage “Jubilation XXV Man”, “Interlude Man”, “Epic Man”, and a sample of “Honour Woman”, and I enjoy the first three very much (and I can like the fourth one too). “Jubilation XXV Man” might be my favorite fragrance of all time. I hope to win “Search”. I live in the U.S.A.

  • They all sound gorgeous! Karl’s descriptions are wonderful to read and really give one a good idea of the experience of these fragrances. I would love to win Search. The citrus and smoke combination seems unique. I’m in the USA.

  • I love the thematic grouping in the Amouage Odyssey Collection Chapter III Escape. Scent is a powerful motivator and its use for introspection and thinking about how it can be used to envisage a new world is genius. Frankincense is a wonderful core ingredient for contemplation. All four sound lovely but Guidance has me most intrigued due to the pear and floral notes. MD, USA

  • Oh boy, Amouage did it again. To me, Amouage is the definition of Arabic niche fragrance. Everything they do is special and needs to be tested at least. ‘
I like everything from the new Odyssey Collection, but the one I liked the most is Search because I really want to try the citrus with the lime and the smoky accords.
    I hope to win Search.

I am intrigued by the notes in lineage the most but all sound great. A wonderful description by Karl just dissecting each fragrance. Thanks a million from the United Kingdom

  • colliding. The base fuses the spicy elements with the Mystikal Molecule (Burning Incense) saffron, suede and Akigalawood.

Top Notes: Bergamot, Pink Pepper, Frankincense, Pimento Berry; Heart Notes: Rose, Sand Vetiver, Sandalwood, Papyrus; Base Notes: Saffron, Suede, Mystikal, Akigalawood. I am fascinated and intrigued by the notes in Purpose this is one that has piqued my interest. A brilliant review by Karl and Michelyn just adds depth and mystery to this collection. Thanks a lot from the UK

  • I love the reviews. Very detailed. I would choose search those citrus notes along with the woody smokey feel is what I live in a scent. I’m from Bromx NY

  • There is something about Amouage that makes me love this brand so much. Even their pictures have this colours and textures that makes me love them more.
It may sound stupid to love a perfume brand because of their pictures, but it’s true 🙂
Thank you Karl for this great experience! It was a pleasure reading about Odyssey Collection Chapter III. My choice between Lineage, Search, Guidance and Purpose is the last one.
Purpose is the “chic but raw interpretation of a frankincense tree alone in the desert”. I can connect with that more than I wished.
    Hugs from UK

  • We definitely live during a time when escape is all one can ever dream of. I love that escape + personal odyssey is the theme of this new collection, and how it’s all tied together with frankincence. Frankincence traditionally has healing properties and even though we all want an escape, we can’t escape forever. The personal odyssey of healing + acceptance of what we desire to escape from is inevitable. Thanks for sharing such lovely descriptions of this collection, Karl! Guidance is would be my choice not only because of what it symbolizes, but also because the notes sounds like the scent profile I always gravitate towards.
    Based in USA

  • Oh, I have been searching for excellent examples of frankincense in perfume, and these all have it! So difficult to choose, as the descriptions of the lightness and creaminess of Guidance and the contrasting light and dark of Purpose meet both ends of the spectrum. As I am in search of a perfume for someone who is indeed rising up out of a desert and growing new branches of strength, I think I would choose Purpose for them. Thank you for this generous draw. I live in the US, Boston area.

  • Andrei Artimon says:

This Escape collection sounds to be just what i need in a mentally relaxing and calming fragrance collection. Purpose sounds really nice.
This really is the new amouage.

  • Karl made a great point about the state of the world and how frankincense in particular and perform in general can calm one down and bring one to a peaceful, meditative state. All of these reviewed perfumes are lovely, but we’re I to win this draw, I would choose Lineage for its vibrant and meditative qualities, as Karl described. Thanks for wonderful reviews and draw. From continental USA.

  • I like Karl’s description of each fragrance and the clear impression of the experience each review provided. I would choose Guidance because of how it was described as an ‘aha’ moment relating to Quentin Bisch’s feminine scents. I live in Utah, USA.

  • Karl’s descriptions are fantastic! I would choose Guidance, I’m interested in the Pear note and experimenting with more feminine fragrances. I’m in California.

  • Amouage is one of my favorite houses and I’ve been very excited about the new Odyssey collection. Lineage does sound meditative with its notes of frankincense and myrrh. I’m especially intrigued that Karl says it has a spearmint-like effect on his skin; I love the aroma of spearmint, so I’d love to try Lineage even more. I’m generally not a big fan of strong citrus aromatics, but Karl’s comments regarding Search’s smoky aspect are appealing. I have been most excited to try Guidance, so reading Karl’s description only confirms my interest. It sounds like a beautiful feminine-leaning fragrance; I greatly enjoy Amouage’s feminine fragrances, so I have no doubt I will enjoy Guidance. Purpose sounds meditative just like Lineage. I’m a fan of moss, wood, and spice so it sounds like a fragrance I would enjoy.

I would choose Guidance if I had the opportunity to own the travel spray. It sounds the most beautiful to me and the notes are right up my alley. Thank you, Karl, for the great reviews, and thank you to Michelyn and Karl for the generous giveaway. I am located in the USA.

  • wallygator88 says:

Thanks for the fun review, Karl!

I absolutely loved the description of Search. I have fond memories of biryanis and other dishes cooked with the preserved omani lemons. They have such a distinct savory citrus aroma.

This paired with the lemony, turpenic qualities of Hojari frankinscense sounds like such a beautiful citrus, resinuous, meditative scent.

I would absolutely love to smell this.

    Cheers from WI, USA

  • Bryant Worley says:

Karl’s reviews were very well done and expressive, while being both informative and enlightening.

I want to win a 10ml sample of Lineage because I want to experience the fizzy and fresh effect, whilst waiting for the drydown that will give me visions of a beautiful sunset..

I live in Waldorf, Maryland, USA.

  • Frankincense is one of my favorite notes in perfumery, so this collection is very elegant. I love the idea of different perfumers using this note in very different ways. I gravitate towards Lineage’s solar qualities, but am even more intrigued by Purpose’s striking imagery, as well as the reedy, dry notes used throughout the perfume. Thanks for the coverage of all four in this collection, Karl, and breaking down how the notes and wear.

I’m in the USA. If I were to win the giveaway, I’d love Purpose. Thanks!

  • foreverscents says:

I enjoyed reading Karl’s reviews and his overview of this collection. The theme of odyssey and journey echoed throughout his reviews. I would choose Lineage because I like fragrances that take a while to understand. I also like a fragrance that has mineral aspects, as well as warmth from the sun.
    I live in the USA.

  • Michael Prince says:

What appeals to me about Karl’s reviews of the Amouage Odyssey Collection is learning about all of these new fragrances in detail from Karl. I love how the new collection all utilize frankincense. Out of the new line Amouage Odyssey Chapter III Search by Alexis Grugeon (Firmenich) really draws me in with a really zesty citrus experience of lemon and lime, incense, and the smoky spicy woody experience. If I win I would choose Search. I am from the USA.

  • Wonderful reviews Karl! What appeals to me about Karl’s reviews is how he describes Guidance as being tied to the “original Amouage triad” of rose, frankincense, and ambergris, but with the added layer of complexity of hazelnut cream along with the intensity of akigalawood and vanilla. Whilst I very much love the house of Amouage, I tend to yearn for their older original compositions the most – Gold, Dia, and the brilliant and almost forgotten Ubar. So learning that Guidance is more reminiscent of the original Amouage fragrances, but with a modern femininity twist, makes me even more excited to try it. If I were to win, I would definitely pick Guidance for those reasons, as well as for the simple fact that I adore rose fragrances. I live in the US.
