Top Ten Fragrances of 2021

What a year 2021 turned out to be, full of uncertainty and hope, the return to society and the new ‘norm’ has been different for each one of us. Yet, one thing has remained unchanged for me. I continued to seek comfort and inspiration in fragrances, exploring many niche, designer, and artisanal houses as often as my nose and time allowed. I feel honored and extremely grateful to have the opportunities and pleasure to try, review and enjoy many unique works of olfactory art and even though I couldn’t highlight all the beauties released in 2021, here are my top ten fragrances of 2021 that certainly deserve the love and attention.

Parfums de Marly Oriana one of the top ten fragrances of 2021

Parfums de Marly Oriana (Hamid Merati Kashani) is a delectable scoop of marshmallow goodness. A mille-feuille of flaky sweetness, softness, and sensuality. The airy sweetness of Chantilly cream with juicy mandarin and a soft base of ambrette and musk is a feminine kiss that leaves a sugary imprint on the neck, a gourmand’s dream.

Guerlain Santal Pao Rosa (Delphine Jelk): clad in the new bottle design turned out to be a fabulous work of art. “If it were a sculpture, it would be a wooden work by Giuseppe Penone,” the artist who led the Arte Povera movement. Penone’s work takes the form of installations and sculptures comprising scented and organic woods. The composition felt like an ode to some of the earlier works of Guerlain house with depth, perfect balance, and the nutty fig-like heart creating an interesting contrast to the oud sandalwood of the base.

BDK Velvet Tonka

BDK Paris Velvet Tonka (Alexandra Carlin): Velvet Tonka, is a tribute to the Moroccan origins of founder David Benedek and the iconography associated with the region through its flavors and landscapes. Like a sweet, indulgent breeze coming straight from the Atlas Mountains. A trilogy of tonka bean, almonds, and orange blossom, an opulent delicacy dusted with icing sugar. The base is full of addictive milky Amyris wood unfurl, enhanced by ambroxan and vanilla absolute for an unparalleled velvety texture.

Issey Miyake A Drop d'issey

Issey Miyake Drop d’Issey (Ane Ayo): Drop d’Issey is a magnifying glass suspended in front of a lilac flower, capturing what peeks out from behind it. The drop reveals a butterfly hiding among the petals, magnifying the soft powdery texture of its wings, a warmth of rays against the skin in the early spring. A modern lilac is enhanced by an ethically sourced orange blossom note and an almond milk accord. A touch of musk meets upcycled cedarwood and vanillin in the base notes to give the fragrance a full-bodied finish.

Kayali Invite Only Amber

Kayali Invite Only Amber 23 (Ilias Ermenidis): This somewhat overhyped fragrance by the Youtube star, turned out to be a big surprise for me. A warm, seductive, and ultra-decadent cocktail. Combining the sweet, deep, and voluptuous facets of amber and tonka bean, it creates a feeling of an expensive cigar soaked in a glass of rum. Boozy, thick, and utterly seductive. I will admit, it deserves the golden epaulets. After all, it’s one heck of a concoction.

Roja parfums 51 Essence

Roja Parfums 51 Essence De Parfum (Roja Dove) is an ode to the address of Roja Parfums boutique in London; it’s an ultra-feminine composition of tart raspberries and a bouquet of white flowers. These lush white florals scream decadence with every aspect of their outfit and powdery, slightly vintage whisper from the past. I think of an elegant vanity table covered in gold crystal bottles and an apartment at the Plaza. Very Roja.

Best by Kilian perfume of 2021

KILIAN PARIS Apple Brandy (Sidonie Lancesseur): was first conceived with perfumer Sidonie Lancesseur to open KILIAN PARIS’s New York flagship eight years ago. The fragrance returned, featuring the original apple brandy core but, this time, with an added bright uplift—KILIAN PARIS’s signature “on the rocks” accord blended into the opening for an ice-cold liquored delight expressing a uniquely KILIAN PARIS character. A blend of bergamot adds a zesty touch. Apple brandy and cardamom create a tart heart character. The packaging initially drew me in, yet I stayed for another sip and eventually couldn’t resist acquiring the bottle.

Goldfield & Banks Silky Woods

Goldfield & Banks Silky Woods (Dimitri Weber): This is the first release in the botanical collection, built around precious wood species harvested sustainably for the first time in perfume history in the Daintree Rainforest in Tropical Queensland. It was love at first sniff. The opulent texture of soft suede, warm vanilla, and smoky-sweet tobacco leaves, a refined pinch of saffron and incense with almost coconut-like ylang-ylang and native sandalwood. A very sensual and suave blend. I will say, in all honesty, I haven’t met a perfume by Dimitri I haven’t liked yet; the colors, the stories, and the blends are simply that good.

The Hedonist Ex Nihilo

Ex Nihilo The Hedonist(Jordi Fernandez) is a modern woodsy highlight of the year for me. Centered around Akigalawood, this composition feels light and ultra-wearable. Yet, it possesses the right amount of resinous warmth, and necessary depth one expects at a specific price point for niche fragrances.

Jousset Accident A La Vanille Jousset

Jousset Parfums Accident A La Vanille (Jimmy Bodin) is an ode to vanilla. This Swiss based brand blends perfumes as if they were patisserie chefs. Every single fragrance from the line represents a different dessert. It starts smoky and thick and slowly transforms into a more round, delicious, and ultra-creamy scoop of vanilla ice cream, ending with a soft subtle whisper, a rather exciting interpretation. You get to discover almost all the facets of the ingredient with one wear.

 Top Ten Fragrances of 2021Cafleurebon

2021 has been a year filled with highs and lows. During the highs you felt like you were on top of the world. During the lows, it almost felt like you were buried alive and gasping for air. Luckily, many of the highs were made possible with fragrance, and one must not underestimate the power of lifting one’s spirits with the simple application of their favorite fragrance. Fragrances have always brought me solace, and they were an especially big help for me this year. 2021 is responsible for some amazing fragrance releases, and below are my top ten fragrances of 2021:

Amouage Silver Oud one of the best fragrances of 2021

Amouage Silver Oud (Cecile Zarokian): Amouage Silver Oud is a unique expression of oud by Cecile Zarokian that fuses together oud with cypriol and birch. The animalic tendencies of the perfume also grant the composition an unorthodox edge while vanilla establishes an agreeable element in the base. This dark and daring composition falls in line with other creations from the brand. It truly is an example of the benchmark of quality for which Amouage is known. Silver Oud is one of the most unique oud fragrances of our time.

Escentric Molecules M+Mandarin

Escentric Molecules M+ Mandarin (Geza Shon): M+ Mandarin by Escentric Molecules is the latest expression of Iso-E-Super introduced into the collection. This linear composition by Geza Schoen adds a sparkling mandarin orange note on top of a familiar DNA. The quality of the mandarin note conveys its organic tendencies, and it effectively breaks up the monotony of the original. If iris or patchouli are your thing, there are fragrances in the collection spotlighting those notes as well. M+ Mandarin is an easy-to-wear, versatile fragrance that has become my new addiction.

Memo Corfu

Memo Paris Corfu (Phillipe Parparella): Memo Paris released Corfu in 2021, and this olfactive trip takes us to the island in Greece where relaxation is key. The bright, sparkling opening is made possible on account of a bouquet of citrus notes, which include lemon, grapefruit, orange, and bergamot. Rhubarb also happens to be the star of the show as it adds a unique spin to the freshness. Rose, geranium, and raspberry make up the heart while musk, patchouli, and sandalwood create the resolute nature in the base. Corfu is simply a vacation in a bottle.

Memo Corfu

Kajal Homme II (Chris Maurice and Rosendo Mateu): is a sequel of a classic, and this time, Christian Maurice and Rosendo Mateu resume their collaboration to bring out another masterpiece. The elegant quality of this fragrance is made possible by notes of peach and orange blossom. A sprinkling of cinnamon sweetens the composition up while also giving it a bit of a spicy edge. Sweet notes along with woods in the base create the duality between saccharine and earthy. Lavender occasionally peaks its head through to remind us of the sophisticated nature of the composition.

Roja Parfums Manhattan

Roja Parfums Manhattan (Roja Dove): Roja Parfums took us back to the 1920s when he released Manhattan. This Art Deco inspired perfume brings us to the Roaring Twenties where the ban on alcohol had just backfired. This classy perfume marries tobacco with vanilla and spice. Heliotrope and coconut create the fruity and floral tendencies of the blend, but the fragrance is not afraid to eventually show its dark and resinous heart with notes of benzoin and patchouli. After fragrances like Creation-E and Amber Oud, we are fully aware of the creative versatility of perfumer Roja Dove.

Nishane Shem

Nishane Shem (Lucas Sieuzac) Shem is a word that means “candle,” and the beauty of a candle is that it can share its light without sacrificing its own illumination. This is the premise behind the perfume Shem, and perfumer Lucas Sieuzac brilliantly combines a leather accord with elemi resin and cardamom. The spicy overtones are broken up by a floral bouquet of Turkish rose and geranium. Osmanthus resides in the heart along with amber for the ultimate expression of resinous warmth. Vetiver secures the feeling of earth in the base for an organic conclusion.

Jovoy Paris Fire At Will was one of the best vanilla fragrances of 2021

Jovoy Paris Fire At Will (Vanina Muracciole): Fire At Will is a gourmand expression like no other. This vanilla-based perfume combines the sweet ingredient with brown sugar and mimosa for the ultimate uniqueness. Mimosa is a light, powdery, floral ingredient that can often give off the smell of almond flour, and there is such a magical effect transpiring throughout this fragrance. You’ll surely be in heaven after smelling Fire At Will, especially if you happen to be a fan of vanilla gourmands!

Milano Fragranze Naviglio

Milano Fragranze Naviglio (Michelle Moelhausen): With Milano Fragranze, the brand’s founder, Alessandro Brun, takes people on an olfactive journey around the city of Milan. This city that he knows all too well is multi-faceted and full of history. With Milano Fragranze’s Naviglio, the scent is evocative of the blue-collar workers of the city washing their clothes in the nearby canals. The soapy quality of the fragrance is completely novel, and the citrus top is comprised of Neroli and bergamot from Calabria. Lavender also contributes to the soap accord, and a base of cedar and white musk create the dichotomy between earthy and clean.

Electimuss Mercurial Cashmere

Electimuss London Mercurial Cashmere (Sofia Bardell): This exceptional perfume based on Roman mythology combines cardamom with tuberose and caramel. The multi-faceted personality of the fragrances takes it into several different directions. While at times the perfume is sweet on account of the tonka bean, caramel, and vanilla, at other times the fragrance is floral on account of tuberose, violet, and iris. This complex expression makes it one of the most unique releases of 2021 and one that will shine for many years to come!

Rogue Perfumery Derviche II one of the ebst artisan fragrances of 2021

Rogue Perfumery Derviche II (Manuel Cross:): Derviche was a show-stopping expression of vanilla and tobacco that resembled the most exotic hookah flavor you can imagine. Animalic touches in the base gave light to this 2018 masterpiece. However, in 2021, Derviche II is released, and this fragrance is a slightly fresher version of the original with a noticeable dollop of agarwood! The sweet and woodsy tendencies make this one of the most exciting releases of the year, and wearers are sure to be enamored by the fruity and amber cocktail in the base. Derviche II is an amber perfume done right!

  • I always use Stephen’s expertise as a guide to fragrances I may like, my taste is all over the place so his reviews and choices help me a lot. All of the picks are ones on my radar, I would love the opportunity to win Kajal Homme II, I’ve only heard great things about this house. I live in Indiana USA

  • From the reviews, it seems Olya is more into effervescent floral and woody perfumes while Steven prefers relatively challenging and animalic perfumes with oriental themes. My choice is Kajal Homme II. I am in US.

  • I think that they are great selections, I really love them, I live in Poland, EU. I would like to win Kajal Homme II.

  • I so appreciate the niche and smaller houses in the best of lists this year. I am also excited to see these picks contain some ones we haven’t seen earlier. The fig heart in Santa Pao Rosa is appealing as is everything about Slimy Woods. I am curious about the Kayali fragrances and was interested to see Olga’s take on Invite Only. I wasn’t surprised Steven chose Silver Oud after seeing his earlier comments and I love this one too.

If I win, I will choose Fire at Will. I’m in USA and appreciate all of the year end draws. Happy New Year and let’s hope for a wonderful 2022.

  • M+ Mandarin for sure. Steven nailed it – the monotony of the original was a bit numbing, but the addition of the right kind of citrus makes the whole thing pop. Heard great things about the massive dose of sweetness in Fire at Will too. Not the biggest fan of the smell of almond flour, but vanilla always seems to make fragrances better doesn’t it? LOL Yeah, I’m sure marketers would agree. Definitely down with BDK’s Velvet Tonka and Silky Woods. What was that I just said about vanilla? But for me, Manhattan takes the cake. Only got to sample it once and it was just lovely. Shame that it’s a limited edition. Wonderful descriptions all around. Would love to win Kajal Homme II! Canada.

  • Thanks for the final entries Steven and Olya!

Steven is my favourite Youtube reviewer and am always happy to see another video pop up on my feed. I recall his Kajal Homme II review and recall how he enjoyed this sweet, fruity but spicy release. I have Kajal Homme, but apparently this flanker is a completely new interpretation. I’m intrigued!

Olya always makes me smile. Not only because of her contageous smile but also because of her style of writing. It’s down to earth, relateable and shows her passion for (collecting) fragrances just like myself. Silky Woods is my favourite from her top 10 and I look forward to trying the others from her recommendations.

I would love to win Kajal Homme II!
    Greetings from the UK

  • What a fantastic list! Many are going on my list to try for 2022. I have been a long time subscriber of Steven’s channel and absolutely love how he describes the scents and break down the notes. As a consumer it helps me to decide which scents should go on sampling list. I also enjoy Olga’s reviews on various scents showcased here. She certainly has a gift. I would love to win “fire at will” as The notes are right up my alley. It sounds like a beautiful Composition. I live in the US

  • Brad Woolslayer says:

Olya and Steven make some nice selections for the year 2021. I’ve been wanting to try several of these fragrances. I would love to win a bottle of Kajal Homme II. I live in Maryland USA.

  • Sandro Mateush says:

Great selections! It was interesting to see such a multifaceted TOP.
I’d like to win “Kajal Homme 2” from Kajal.
    I’m in EU, Ukraine, Kyiv
    Thank you!

  • So far, I’ve only tried two of the fragrances which are mentioned in this article, and they are: Rogue Perfumery’s “Derviche II” and Milano Fragranze’s “Naviglio”. I don’t prefer “Derviche II”, but I do wish that I own “Derviche” because I do enjoy that one (it’s an enjoyable, addictive vanillic fragrance). “Naviglio” reminds me of the moist citrus-scented towels which they would give us when on long-distance bus rides in Turkey (when I was very young). I can like that fragrance, but I would only buy a full bottle of it if I was wealthy. Right now, though, I would only insist on owning a full bottle of “Basilica” first, and then “Diurno” and “Brera”. I would like to sample all of the fragrances which are mentioned in this article. If I win, then I would choose (in this order): “Kajal Homme II”, and then Jovoy Paris’ “Fire At Will” as my second choice. I live in the U.S.A. Thanks for the giveaway opportunity.

  • I love how Issey Miyake, Escentric Molecules and Kayali are mentioned alongside Roja and Nishane. My own collection is also a mix of designer, niche and indie. I am very drawn to Fire At Will because I love vanilla and because I have never been disappointed by a Jovoy fragrance, even after trying ~10. I would like to enter the draw for Jovoy Fire At Will.
    I live in Denmark, EU.

  • Great suggestions! Personally, as a fan of both Ex Nihilo and Nishane,
I am drawn to The Hedonist and Shem. I would love to sniff Fire At Will by Jovoy Paris. Thanks for your great article! Mich USA

  • Wow love both lists. It’s wonderful knowing all the Fragrances they picked. I wish I was able to say I sampled all of them. Fire at Will sounds wonderful that’s my choice. Thank you USA

  • Olya’s top ten perfumes of 2021 are all great choices. I haven’t had the chance to try all of them, but I am very interested in testing Oriana and Apple Brandy. After reading Olya’s comments about Velvet Tonka, I may just have to try this one as well. The notes of tonka bean, almond, and orange blossom sound so beautiful and with milky Amyris it sounds stunning. I agree with Olya that Drop d’Issey is a modern lilac fragrance; it really is quite gorgeous. As Olya pointed out, Invite Only Amber 23 was very over-hyped but it took me by surprise as well. It is a very cozy fragrance that’s perfect for autumn and winter. The sensual and suave Silky Woods and vanilla ice cream invoking Accident A La Vanille are perfect descriptions for those fragrances.

Unfortunately, I have not had the chance to test most of Steven’s selections. I greatly enjoy many fragrances from Memo, so Steven’s description of Corfu has me intrigued. As he mentioned, it sounds like a vacation in a bottle. The notes in Manhattan sound perfect for autumn and winter; tobacco, vanilla, and spices are always a lovely combination. The one fragrance I am particularly interested in that was included in Steven’s selections is Fire At Will. I love gourmands and all of the notes included in Fire At Will. Steven’s comments about it having a magical effect makes me want to try it as soon as possible! I may have to add Mercurial Cashmere to my test list after Steven points out it’s one of the most unique releases of 2021.

Overall, I greatly enjoyed reading about Olya’s and Steven’s top fragrance choices of 2021. Thank you for the article and the giveaway! I would love to win Jovoy Fire At Will and I’m located in the USA.

  • I had missed a few of the fragrances highlighted on this top ten list of 2021. Thanks Steven and Olya for bringing these fragrances to my attention.
If I am picked for the drawing, I would love Kajal Homme II – Kajal. Thanks.
    Greetings from Maryland, US

  • Olya’s and Steven’s selections are nice! First of all I am so happy, that Olya has become a CaFleureBon`s contributor this year. Issey Miyake Drop d’Issey was such a great discovery for me – naturalistic spring lilac, and what a wonderful bottle imitating a waterdrop. I immediately purchased a bottle of it after reading a review here! Steven`s choice of Escentric Molecules M+ Mandarin is also awesome. This is such an invigorating and juicy tangerine. One of the most long lasting I`ve ever tried.
I am also so curious about Rogue Perfumery brand! Seems like they make awesome chypre-like classical fragrances.

I would be happy to win Fire At Will by JOVOY PARIS.
    UK

  • Delightful selection, from Olya’s and Steven’s choices, Javoy Fire at Will caught my interest, this vanilla , brown sugared and mimosa gourmand seems to be like a battle of delicious flowes , thanks for the draw, from Romania with love! Happy new year!

  • I really love these top 10s of the year and getting the different perspectives of the different writers. This one in particular seemed to me to have the most differences to the others. Not as much green here but certainly the comforting and gourmand trends are present. I’ve not tried any of these but would like to try a number of them. Would love to try Santal Pao Rosa, Velvet Tonka, Apple Brandy OTR, Silky Woods, Accident A La Vanille, Manhattan, Fire At Will, and Mercurial Cashmere. The Hedonist and Silver Oud also sound interesting. If I was to win the draw I’d be thrilled to win Fire At Will! Thanks so much for the generous draw, from CT USA.

  • Another stellar list by Olya and Steven the two that really stood out for my tastes are probably Amouage Silver oud and Kilian Apple brandy. If I am lucky to win I would love to win Kajal Homme I I. Thanks a million from the United Kingdom

  • Great fragrances chosen by Olya and Steven. I am not surprised that Olya chose Apple Brandy and Steven chose Silver Oud. If I am successful I would love to win Fire at Will by Jo oy because I have a soft spot for gourmand fragrances. Thanks a lot from the UK

  • I am curious about the house of Kajal. I know that Kajal is a constant presence on this blog, being featured in many articles, so that speaks volumes about the quality of the fragrance.
Thanks and good luck to everyone!

  • Olya’s and Steven’s selections feature many that I have heard about and been quite interested via reviews and of course Steven’s YouTube content. Apple Brandy on the Rocks is one that just sounds so refreshing and you can’t help but love the presentation that Killian offers. I have the most experience with Naviglio (thanks again to the generosity of CaFleureBon and Milano Fragranze for generously providing it for me) and have never smelled anything so soapy realistic before in my life, with that added freshness up top. Silky Woods sounds incredible. The one that intrigued me most, however, and the one that I would choose of those provided is Kajal Homme II. I have decants of the OG Kajal and also Lamar from the house that I am currently working through and LOVING and would enjoy the opportunity to finally get my nose on Homme II. To be honest, any fragrance that features the note of peach grabs my attention as it’s one of my favorites in all of perfumery. Thanks again, as always, for the opportunity and see ya next year! Cheers from Illinois!

  • I really appreciate that niche, artisan perfumery and designers are all represented in the selection. I haven’t tried many of the selection, but I was happy to see the designer fragrance A drop d’Issey was included ; i was pleasantly surprised by this perfume and didn’t expect to like it as much as I do. It certainly left an impression on me. I also like that I found in the list some new perfumes that I’m not intrigued with, and now I want to hunt them down: Electimuss London Mercurial Cashmere (cardamom, tubereuse and caramel, thank you very much), Roja Parfums Manhattan (that bottle and that juice color… And it has heliotrope and coconut!), Jousset Parfums Accident A La Vanille…
I live in Romania and I would love to win Fire at Will.
    Happy New Year everyone !

  • I love reading Steven ´cause he always gets on the point and knows how to describe fragrances at perfection. I also enjoyed so much reading Olya’s picks, she seems like someone who loves floral and woody fragrances.
Would love to win Kajal Homme II. I live in the U.S.

  • Olya and Steven picks are excellent especially the drop de issey which I bought this year !
I cannot afford Kilian or Roja so I will take her word for it! Oriana was too sweet for me but nice
Steven choices seem good too I really would like to try Fire at Will and kajal 2
I have read so much about Manuel Cross that I am going to get a sample set!
    My choices is Kajal 2

  • I loved how Olya and Steven came up with all sorts of frags, from very androgynous statement perfumes with a raw backbone to the softest bubbliest gourmands and everything in between. I noticed some of the well praised fragrances repeated in this article also, such as Silver Oud, and I was glad to find Issey Miyake’s new release featured here. While I know Cafleurebon mostly focuses on niche, it can happen for mainstream perfumery to come up with a release which can compete with the priciest perfumes and I believe those are definitely worth being mentioned.
I would love to win Fire at Will and bask in the decadent fluffy vanilla heaven!
    I’m in the EU.

  • Some nice selections here, and once again many entries into my perfume-database for samples to order during the year. Because all of them I missed during the last year, not tried one of them. This is what makes those lists very helpful for me.

Would love to win Kanal Homme II

    Living in Germany, EU

  • A gourmand like no other…..explosion…..magical……heaven. Fire at Will sounds perfect for me. All the other fragrances here drifted into the background. Well, Accident a’Vanilla did get my attention. I have avoided all the Molecules line after I smelled the first and couldn’t smell anything. I supposed I could give it another try after Steve’s review as I trust his opinion. I’d love to win Fire at Will. Sure hate to see this series come to an end. USA. Thanks for all the great reads this past year.

  • I love that this extensive list of favorites from Olya and Steven is so chock full of sweet gourmands; they have become my favorites, too, for some reason…perhaps the need for comfort during these trying times. I am relieved I have not been stricken with the virus making its rounds as I cannot imagine life with my sense of smell…oh, how tragic and sterile that would be! If I were so lucky as to win this draw I would choose Fire At Will for its brown sugar , Mimosa and vanilla accords. Thank you all at Cafleurbon and all the perfumer/artists for brightening each and every day! I am in the US.

  • I am loving the look of that bottle of Corfu! A new must try! And the Hedonist by Ex Nihilo sounds like a very wearable wood. That Roja Manhattan bottle also has me intrigued! I would be happy to win either Fire at Will, as a gourmand vanilla is always a treat, or Kajal Homme II, a brand that is new to me. Thanks for the picks!

  • Sadly I’ve only had the chance to try Derviche II among those on this list. It was very nice indeed! I still can’t decide if I like I or II more. I’d like to thank both contributors for their insight to these fragrances. I would like to win Kajal II since it sounds great with the combo of peach, lavender and neroli. Thank you from Canada!

  • Very interesting selection. I was curious to see what Steven was going to choose for his top 10, and I was not disappointed. I’m very curious about M+ Mandarin especially since I love Molocule 1, which is a staple in mine and my significant others rotation. I have never tried any of the mixes from Escentric Molecules, but will now have to look into them. Silver Oud was on more than 1 persons list also, so I will need to get my nose on that one too. I would pick Kajal Homme II for the draw. In the US.

  • Olya and Steven!!! ❤️❤️ Thank you so much for fantastic Top Ten lists!!! My favorite Parums de Marly release this year was Delina La Rosee (thank you Nir at Perfumology!) ❤️ Your lists remind me (again) just how new I am to the world of scent and just how MANY amazing houses there are to experience (bdk, Issey Miyake, etc. etc.). Maybe 2022 will be the year! Huge thank you to Steven who help me (and my husband) select our Apple Brandy bottle from Kilian! We were amazed that this super famous YouTube personality would so kindly answer our comments and give us excellent advice! ❤️ My favorite Goldfiend & Banks discovery of the year (new to me) was Desert Rosewood (again, thank you Nir of Perfumology – everyone should check out this family owned shop!). What a lovely and delicate spicy/amber/resinous/woody/vanilla scent! I completely agree with Naviglio and Electimuss Mercurial Cashmere as amazing full bottle buys! ❤️ Rogue Derviche II is an Event for us! We are HUGE Manny Cross fans in this household, and rumor has it this fragrance was originally inspired by Coty’s Emeraude!!! Emeraude has a historic place in our family! A HUGE Thank You shout out to Despina for the information to contact Coty and purchase a 100 year anniversary of Spoturno 1921 by Coty! They are the best people! There is no way we would have learned about this event or had any chance to gift this experience to our family without CaFleureBon! HUGE HUGS!!! ❤️❤️ Thank you for the opportunity to win a bottle of Fire at Will or Kajal Homme II, either would be splendid! USA

  • I enjoy Steven’s video reviews and reading Olya Bar’s reviews here on Cafleurebon. I am a Redolessence subscriber too. From the reviews here, I am intrigued by Amouage Silver Oud, as Rachel chose it too in another list. Fire at Will won’t be my first choice in this draw as I am not a big fan of gourmand perfumes. So if I were to win this draw, I would go for Kajal Homme II. Happy New Year!! I am from USA.

  • I love that even after so many best of lists there are still plenty of new choices popping up for me to try! I also appreciate when when the lists include a designer scent or two (like Drop). It would be really difficult to chose which of these lovely bottles to receive because both sound wonderful. I guess I would go with Kajal because I haven’t tried any from the house and the bottle looks so cool. US.

  • Some great choices from Steven and Olya. I love the number of gourmands included. Olya seems to go for the fizzy floral, ones while Steven likes the tobacco, woody ones. The only one I’ve had a chance to try is PdM Oriana, a yummy, feminine fragrance. I would love to win Fire At Will. I’m in MD, USA.

  • Thank you Olya and Steven. I enjoyed both of your descriptions on your choices for top 10 fragrances of 2021. While I am familiar with most there are a few that have piqued my attention and that I will have to get my nose on. They are:
    1. Issey Miyake Drop d’Issey – Lilac, orange blossom, and an almond milk accord have my undivided attention.
    2. Jousset Parfums Accident A La Vanille – An ultra creamy scoop of vanilla ice cream…I’m already there. mmmm!
    3. Memo Paris Corfu – A fresh citrusy, fruity, floral vacation in a bottle – my bags are packed and ready to go.
    4. Jovoy Paris Fire at Will – A vanilla gourmand with brown sugar and mimosa – Oh my goodness, this is surely a heavenly scent that can be aimed in my direction and fired at will.

I live in the US and if I am lucky enough to be drawn as the winner my choice is Jovoy Paris Fire At Will. Thank you for the opportunity.

  • Thank for the list, I follow Steven on Youtube and trust his reviews. Unfortunately it seems Roja Manhattan was a limited edition that sold out quickly, it really seems like my kind of scent. Kajal Homme is one fragrance I really like so it would be pleasure the try the next version. I live in Finland.

  • I became interested in the M+ Mandarin immediately upon reading. If picked I’d love to have the Kajal Homme II. US

  • I’ve been following Steven’s Youtube channel for more than six years – his expertise and passion for scents are so contagious. I got to know Olya through CaFleurBon and have been a big fan ever since. What a New Year’s delight is to read impressions about the 2021 fragrance from my two favorite people from a frag-sphere. 🙂

Since I have become more drawn to more typically feminine smelling fragrances in 2021, I admired Olya’s selection of fragrances, which seems to be right up my alley. Her featured fragrances gave me vibes of coziness and a warm embrace that we need to survive 2021.

Fire At Will by Jovoy has been the most intriguing fragrance from Steve’s list. Vanilla scents gave me needed olfactive armor and Jovoy has been on my radar in 2021. If I am lucky, I would love the opportunity to win it.
Thank you, Stephen and Olya, for sharing your love, and have a great year of 2022!
    Greetings from Slovenia (EU).

  • Bryant Worley says:

Steven and Olya’s selections are excellent. Their descriptions of, and clearly understandable enthusiasm for them shines through. For me as a fragrance lover,, this makes for a very good shopping list. But, hopefully, if I win Kajal Homme II, that’ll be one less purchase I have to make;-D

I live in Waldorf, Maryland, USA.

  • Wow each list is so unique. Big thanks to all team members for their time and effort put into these year end posts. Olya had some very unique choices that are now on my radar. I always appreciate Stevens reviews and his professionalism. If I should win I believe I would choose Kajal Homme ll. I am in the USA and wish you all a New Year with all that you desire.

  • So many of Olya’s choices appeal to me. That bottle for Oriana is so gorgeous in that bubblegum pink. Santal Pao Rosa and Apple Brandy also both sound AND look gorgeous. I’m not the biggest oud fan, but the cap on Roja Manhattan is also getting me. As a big vanilla gourmand fan, I’d love to be entered to win Jovoy Paris Fire at Will, the brown sugar and almond flour notes sound amazing. I am from USA

  • These lists feature some fragrances I haven’t seen on the others, which reminds me again how different our tastes are. But by far, it susprised me to see here A drop D’Issey [which I, too, believe it is gorgeous], between all the nichey scents.
I live in EU, and I’d be thrilled to win Fire at will.

  • Wow, I really know some of the perfumes here! 🙂 not bad, considering that I’ve started to take a big interest in niche perfumes just 2 months ago. I would love to smell Fire at Will! I live in Romania

  • I had the chance to sample Apple brandy, Mandarin and Corfu. This last was a real shock, not my style but it haunted me for a few days. I will go back to see if they have Shem. Sadly the others are not available where I live, I would be curious about Manhattan and Silky woods …
Fire at will, as i like vanilla.I live in Romania

  • My personal discovery of this year was definitely Memo and also I finally tried Apple Brandy which is my second favourite after Heure Verte. On the other hand BDK Paris Velvet Tonka gives me a migraine. Thanks to Olya and Steven, I made a list for the new year to try some fragrances from review. Especially Naviglio, I just love the bottle! I live in France, EU and I would love to get a bottle of Fire at will (still have nothing from Jovoy in my collection).

  • Amanda32828 says:

This is by far the best list that I have read. I love so many of the perfumes listed here, many of them leaning very feminine with gourmand, floral and citrusy notes that are very appealing to the majority of the perfumes lovers. I’ll love to be included in this draw, specially for the Kajal Homme II offering. Thank you for the opportunity, commenting from Orlando, Florida USA

  • Mazikeen Smith 24 says:

I love what Olya and Steven chose as their top ten! Theres a lot of sweet gourmand perfumes which I really love. Also, these 2 are some of the great enthusiasts in the fragrance community, so their opinion on their top picks must be really really good. This is my first time seeing the CaFleurebon Best picks and I love this! Cant wait for the next entries at the end of the year!
I would love to win the Fire at Will! Gourmand! <3
Cheers and Happy New Year to all! USA

  • Very interesting list !
From Olya’s choices I love Apple Brandy and would like to test BDK Velvet Tonka and Roja Parfums 51 Essence De Parfum ( I am big fan of Roja Parfums).
I am very intrigued by Steven descriptions of Roja Parfums Manhattan.
Always appreciate Jovoy Paris unique stile !
    Great giveaway !

Thank you Olya and Steven for your lists.

I really liked a lot of Steven’s favorites because these are scents that I tend to gravitate towards those types of compositions.

I remember Steven’s review on Fire at Will and Kajal Homme II and was delighted to see that these fragrances made the list. Fire at Will was a very different take on a vanilla fragrance and Kajal Homme II was a very well received successor to the original.

Fire at Will was interesting because of it’s use of vanilla and mimosa, while Kajal Homme II is a masculine fragrance with a dose of orange blossom and peach – great alchemies!

I would love to win either fragrance.

    Cheers from WI, USA

  • Thank you Olya and Steven for your top 10 !

From this list I have Kajal Homme 2 , which is my fragrance of the year, and I have to thank Çafleurebon for that.
Steven’s comment on Nishane Shem made me want to try it !

I would like to win Fire at will.

Greeting from Portugal, an awesome and lovely smelling 2022 everyone!

  • It has been quite unanimous the 2021 list, almost 80% of the lists have the same perfumes. This shows how good they are!. But here Olya and Steven open the scope and their list is wider in the sense that there are more brands and perfumes than in any other list, even those of other colaborators of Cafleurbon. Any list in CafleureBon or other media has, at least, one perfume made by Mme. Zarokian. It is amazing what this perfumer achieves year after year in any brand she works: in this case is Amouage Silver Oud who made it to Steven´s list , but look at the masterpieces perfumes she made this year in Nishane. Another name that I love to see in the lists is Manuel Cross ( I love his story form chef to perfumer) with some amazing perfumes in 2021 like Derviche II in Steven´s list or Vetifleur. If I were to win, I would choose Kajal Homme II , not a flanker but a sequel of a classic: a lovely fresh woody-aromatic (the amazing cedar wood with peach an cinnamon touches) .I live in Spain, EU.

  • Claumarchini says:

I enjoyed really very very much all editors’ best of 2021, a big thank you to Olya and Steven for these amazing and interesting selections! I have started to get into niche perfumery just over a year ago and do I am studying as much as I can and trying at the same time to keep up with the new releases and getting to know the connosseurs favourites, so I am printing these best of 2021 to keep as reference! I feel happy that I have actually heard about almost all of them and managed to sample a few, a sign that my study is going well. Olya’s and Steven’s choices are absolutely stunning, I would love to win Kajal Homme as I have never tried anything from the house yet. Greetings from Italy

  • Oriana reminds me of making, and later eating Black Currant Mousse Sheet Cake , With Whipped Cream Topping And Non-Candied Fresh Berries on top . Happy Pastry Chef in the house ‍
    BDK Paris Velvet Tonka
“A trilogy of tonka bean, almonds, and orange blossom, an opulent delicacy dusted with icing sugar”
    Nice
Kayali Invite Only Amber 23,Kilian Apple Brandy On The Rocks
    Both i have to try
Goldfield and Banks Silky Woods is my kind of fragrance, gooey modern gourmand, with woods and tobacco. Smells like traditional
    Caramel Pecan Cinnamon Rolls
Jousset Parfums Accident A La Vanille
“Every single fragrance from the line represents a different dessert.”
    What?
Escentric Molecules fragrances I use if I want to prolong the longevity of other perfumes, giving them some woody or fresh twist.
I wonder what kind of twist Escentric M+ Mandarin will give to my gourmands? Both woody and citrusy touch maybe?
Why not eating a fruity tart while sitting on some beach in Corfu, and just enjoying time
Lamar, the best Kajal in my opinion, smells like Vanilla Cake with Strawberries and Pineapple , I do it almost every day at my bakery.
Homme II to me is different than Lamar, upscale , polished around the edges fragrance.
    Electimuss London Mercurial Cashmere
“tonka bean, caramel, and vanilla, at other times the fragrance is floral”
    I’m taking notes
Fire At Will checks all the boxes, e classical Almond Flour Vanilla Cake , with toasted Brown sugar , and Raw almonds on top , cake every up-and-coming Pastry Chef is learning how to make during the training process.
I’d like to win a bottle of Fire At Will
Appreciate Olya Bar and Steven hard work, the new gourmands i don’t know, and the giveaway campaign

  • I’m glad to finally see some more familiar fragrances. I wanted to try Oriana. The brand has some of my absolute favorite scents such as Delina and Darcy, but also some that are not in my taste as Cassili so I’m quite curious about Parfumes de Marly newest creation. Pure by Issey Miyake is one of my top clean fragrances and I have great sentiment for the brand so obviously A Drop d’Issey is something I’d like to try. Thanks Olya for pointing me in this direction. BDK Paris Velvet Tonka has a note of Amyris which I love and so I guess that one could work for me. In the other hand I’m not a big fan of 51 Essence by Roja. There is something that disturbs me in this scent. I’m absolutely fascinated by Memo Paris (love the concept since I’m a traveler, the presentation and packaging) and I tried Corfu in the summer and loved it so point for Steven there 🙂 I’d like to win Fire At Will by Jovoy Paris. I libe in EU, Poland.

  • wandering_nose says:

Another exquisite duo of Top Ten lists, thank you Olya and Steven! I would absolutely love to try BDK’s Velvet Tonka, Kayali’s Invite Only Amber 23 and Goldfield & Banks’s Silky Woods so Olya’s top picks really appeal to me. Steven’s choices are amazing too – I love the Escentric Molecules M+ trio and I would love to try Silver Oud, Corfu, Shem and, most of all, Fire At Will. I have been on a hunt for a vanilla I would love from the first sniff and this feels like a strong contender. Therefore, I would be happy to win Fire At Will. Thank you from the Republic of Ireland, EU

  • I like how Steven and Olya pick lesser known houses to showcase. This is how we discover the hidden gems! Kajal Homme II would be my pick. Cheers from Indiana.

  • msnitechemist says:

I already knew before starting to read this that Olya’s choices would be more in line to what I like to wear 🙂 I have not tried PDM Oriana yet b/c the first time I found the feminine line recently, I thought I had to try the crowd favorite Delina (and did not like it) and Meliora (with notes that are those I traditionally prefer). I found out recently I didn’t like marshmallow but b/c I liked Meliora so much, Oriana might change my mind. I’ll have to try it soon.

I haven’t tried any of the Kilians, I didn’t think I’d like something like that, but I am intrigued nevertheless to see bergamot included in this iteration of Apple Brandy. It seems bergamot (and magnolia?) had a moment in 2021 and it will be interesting to see if the trend continues.

Goldfield & Banks is on my radar thanks to this website, I love sandalwood and Queensland so my feeling is that I can’t go wrong with that one. Just need to get over to Oz and try it in person…

Thank you for all of these reviews, Olya and Steven. I’m not entering the draw, please exclude me.

  • sephrenia300 says:

Wonderful read! I really appreciate Olya selections, as I am not a huge gourmand fan and generally tend to avoid those types of fragrances, but her descriptions of her favorites give me a great guide on a smaller number of exceptional gourmands to give a chance. I am particularly intrigued by her description of BDK Paris Velvet Tonka as a tribute to the founders Morrocan origins with indulgent tonka bean paired with clean orange blossom and milky Amyris wood, velvety and opulent, and her description of Apple Brandy as an “icy” gourmand which I’ve never heard a fragrance described as, with a zesty and tart heart.

Of Steven’s choices, I really enjoyed his pick of Amouage Silver Oud, as this was a fragrance from one of my favorite houses that had somehow slipped past my radar. I also am really attracted to Shem, which I loved learning is a word meaning “candle”, because it consists of some of my favorite notes – leather, rose, and osmanthus. And finally, I’m glad Steven picked Derviche II because Derviche I is one of my favorite fragrances, I adore Rogue perfumery, and I’m glad this new version of Derviche has Steven’s seal of approval!

I live in the US. I would be happy to win either of the fragrances in this draw, but Kajal Homme II would be my first choice and Fire at Will would be my second choice.

  • Michael Prince says:

Olya and Steven overall have more selections that are geared towards my personal tastes. There are so many of their lists that I have been wanting to try such as BDK Parfums Velvet Tonka, Jovoy Paris Fire at Will a perfect vanilla gourmand, Electimuss London Mercurial Cashmere, Niahane Shem, Roja Parfums Manhattan, and Jousset Parfums Accident A La Vanille Amouage Silver Oud and Kajal Homme II are beautiful fragrances that I really enjoy. I am from the USA. If I win I would pick Jovoy Paris Fire At Will.

  • Oh, the last two lists of 2021, filled with many surprises and a somewhat different feeling selection from the others. I feel I got to know Steven’s taste a bit through his videos, and this list reflects it. I wonder what will 2022 bring us in terms of perfume.
I’m in EU, and would like to win Fire at will.

  • Both of these lists are great! Very different in taste, but both extremely well thought of and valid! Olya made some great choices, including Goldfield and Banks, which I thought was very underrated from this year and Ex Nihilo The hedonist, which was just divine!

But, I slightly preferred Steven’s list, since I’ve watched his content for years know and unknowingly shaped my taste after his taste! Loved his choices, including Silver Oud which was an amazing amouage release, nishane shem which only solidified nishane as one of the most interesting houses there are in perfume world and Kajal Homme II, which was just amazing!

I would like to win KAjal Homme II, I sampled it and fell in love with it, full bottle would be a great way to start a year! 😀

  • IvanVelikov says:

Oriana feels like a happy and cheerful moderately sweet floral , but also professional type of fragrance. Almost all my orange blossom based , but also musky fragrances, I wear with a suit at the shop , sweetness and whipped cream accord are tickling my fancy even more
    Guerlain Santal Pao Rosa
    Just because it’s Guerlain
I’ve heard BDK Parfums, but never had a chance to smell their fragrances.Velvet Tonka is velvety gourmand
    Kayali Invite Only Amber 23
    I like warm and boozy
    Kilian
    Apple Brandy….
Goldfield and Banks is environmentally friendly brand. Silky Woods is delicate , upscale woody amber.
Molecule 01 I use for layering purposes, works really well with fresh citrus fragrances. That’s why my pick is Escentric M+ Mandarin .
    Corfu by MEMO Paris
I think we have sating the senses Mediterranean floral-fruity fragrance.
I have samples of Dahab , and Kajal Homme II I received in a FB group swap. Kajal Homme II is very classy and gentlemanly fragrance , and like Dahab smells natural too.
Psychedelique and Ambre Premier are the best Jovoy fragrances, both are in my possession.
Fire At Will i think is sweeter , more playful, entertaining, and suitable for a bar .
Milano Fragranze Naviglio will suit me well for the summer. Fresh , Italian Cologne is what every man should have.
    Electimuss London Mercurial Cashmere
    Floral gourmand i think
My choice is Kajal Homme II
Thank you Olya Bar and Steven

Guerlain Santal Pao Rosa sounds amazing with nutty fig and sandalwood. At first I was skeptical of the new Guerlain bottle designs but they are really starting to grow on me. Memo Paris Corfu sounds like something that would be amazing in the dead of winter. I love rhubarb! Electimuss London Mercurial Cashmere sounds incredible! I hadn’t heard of this one and I also don’t think I’ve ever experienced the combo of tuberose, caramel and cardamom. I would love to win Fire at Will because I love gourmands and this sounds delicious. Thanks for the draw, from the US.

  • These lists are probably the most wearable for me. I just love Steven’s picks because he just clicks with my sense of smell. As a vanilla lover of course the most interesting pick for me is Fire at Will. I just love Jovoy fragrances, I think they are really original and really affordable for what they are. For Olya’s picks, I think the most interesting is Velvet Tonka. Tonka is one of the most fascinating ingredients.
I live in Poland and would love to win Fire at Will.

  • Thumbs up x2
The new Parfums de Marly Oriana is transitional weather fragrance , orange blossom, marshmallow , fruits and some musk nuances .
Rouge Smoking is the only BDK Parfums i know , Velvet Tonka could be on pair , we’ll see
Silky Woods Goldfield and Banks , Decadent fragrance with the local agarwood, rich vanilla , tobacco , and incense .
I’ve been to Greece 6 times, but never visited Korfu. Summer where are you?
I know Joorie, because my sister in law owns it, but that’s the only Kajal scent I know.High quality spicy sweet rose ,with honey , Kajal Homme II is more versatile, and spicy .
Les Jeux Sont Faits is my favorite Jovoy. Underrated tobacco and rum gem I own.
    Fire At Will sounds phenomenal.
My stomach started rumbling with all vanilla, cacao , chocolate and caramel talking.
Fire At Will Jovoy would ease my cravings
    Thanks for the draw

  • I really like end of the year top 10s
    Most appealing to me are
Olya Bar -> Parfums de Marly Oriana
Bright and fizzy playful fragrance , with citruses on top , marshmallows and whipped cream.
Olya Bar -> BDK Paris Velvet Tonka
    Delicious
Olya Bar -> Kayali Invite Only Amber 23
If Olya says the hype is real
Olya Bar -> KILIAN PARIS Apple Brandy On The Rocks
If there’s quality boozy fragrance, I can’t wait to try them
Olya Bar -> Goldfield and Banks Silky Woods
    Opulent and smoky
Steven -> Kajal Homme II sounds like a business meetings fragrance.
    Steven -> Roja Parfums Manhattan
    Already discontinued
Steven -> Jovoy Fire At Will
Jovoy Paris is by far the best fragrance boutique i’ve ever been to-no US boutique comes even remotely close , or it will ever be.
I so want them to come to US market !
When rich, sweet and delightful fragrance meets super seductive potion , then Fire At Will comes to play.
I feel like I’m having a vanilla cravings , I’ll sip some muled wine, and eat a few vanilla cookies my Mom made for New Years Eve
I would prefer Fire At Will
Cheers everyone, and thank you for the opportunity

  • As usual I’ll share my thoughts on the fragrances from Olya and Steven list I know, or want to try:
    1. Oriana is one of the most hyped, and expected by many fragrances for the past 6 months.
I have sampled / smelled all Parfims De Marly fragrances , excluding Oriana, but I’m expecting a pure , fresh and innocent opening with juicy fruityness, orange blossom, in the base the scent is changing to a full time gourmand
2 . Guerlain Santal Pao Rosa
    I’ll try it
    3. Velvet Tonka by BDK Parfums
Good fragrance, but if I have to rate my favorite BDK Parfums:
    1. Tabac Rose
    2. Rouge Smoking
    3. Gris Charnel

    4. Invite Only Amber 23 by Kayali
People are hyping this one like crazy on Instagram, Twitter YouTube. Either the fragrance is great, or their marketing is.
Out of curiosity I’ll have to check it out
    5. Apple Brandy on The Rocks
I own the original Apple Brandy, and I find On the Rocks version not as good. The booziness is significantly toned down, not to my liking.
    6. I own Southern Bloom , and I love It’s uniqueness, but Silky Woods is even better. It’s so rich and full , I love the way it smells
    7. Jousset Parfums Accident A La Vanille
Not just the fragrance, I’ve never heard the brand name before. Sounds good
    8. Amouage Silver Oud
To be honest ever thought I’m a huge Amouage fan , I’ve always neglected the fragrances from the Library Collection , but Interlude Man comparisons are intriguing.
    9. Escentric M+ Mandarin Is fresh and woody
10.Corfu i believe is clean fragrance, green, spicy fruity and aromatic. Memo do know how to make such fragrances
    11. Kajal Homme II is versatile fragrance, pleasing and elegant
    12. Roja Parfums Manhattan
Limited edition , it’s sold out already
    13. Nishane Shem
Really upscale flori… floral-amber? What’s the new term now?
    14. Fire At Will is seductive, but refined gourmand , with high quality vanilla, brown sugar , mimosa .
    14. Milano Fragranze Naviglio
    Fresh and soapy
    15.Mercurial Cashmere by Electimuss London
Second best from Electimuss London, and the fantastic Amber Aquilaria

“However, in 2021, Derviche II is released, and this fragrance is a slightly fresher version of the original with a noticeable dollop of agarwood!”

I’m sorry Steven, but that’s Not true! Perceptions, body chemistry, sensitivity to certain aromas and notes could be different, but i own 75ml bottle of original Derviche, and I’ve sampled Derviche II , and the two are VERY different.
I’m literally holding my Derviche bottle right now. Slightly different bottle, because I bought it long ago, presentation is a bit different now.
Some of the notes between the two are the same , but tweaked in different proportions , but some are completely different.
I’ll even allow myself to quote Michelyn from the “Top 10 Indie fragrances” article:
“Derviche II uses many of the same materials but in totally different proportions.”
Derviche to me is tobacco heavy, and much thicker, and sweeter .
Derviche II is fruity, effervescent , with ambery base , and definitely there’s no tobacco in it.
Distant cousins yes , but brothers no.
I’d like to get Fire at Will by Jovoy
    Thanks a lot
