Marc Chagall Rosh Hashanah

detail of Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur painting by Marc Chagall

The “Head of the Year”, otherwise known as Rosh Hashanah or the commencement of the Jewish New Year – is based upon a lunar calendar. It happens to be a different day each year according to our solar calendar, but actually falls upon the 1st and 2nd day of the month of Tishrei every year (It’s Tishrei that keeps moving around!). In 2021 Rosh Hashanah arrives early, at sundown on September 6th; it lasts two days. We commemorate the creation of the world and new beginnings, a clean slate. The ten days which begin with the New Year are referred to as the Days of Awe, a period of deep reflection and introspection: what sort of person have we been? Have we injured others by our words and deeds? What really matters?

Rosh Hashanah is my favorite time of the year, during which the subsequent holidays are meaningful and definitely not commercial in nature. Several forms of observance have become traditional – asking for forgiveness (both individually and collectively as a community), wishing others a sweet and healthy new year, and partaking of specific foods. A pomegranate in the household represents both the harvest and the Torah; it is said to contain 613 seeds (I wouldn’t want to count them) which symbolize the precise number of good deeds /commandments one is supposed to keep or aspire to in their lifetime. Apples and honey symbolize the bounty and sweetness of life: we dip apples in honey to remind ourselves. Honey cake is another delicacy which represents all that’s sweet and good. The challenge for me has been to ferret through an untold plethora of honey and apple fragrances, too numerous to count – in an attempt to tease out three celebratory ones. There are plenty of honorable mentions and I’m certain that you, dear readers – harbor your own favorites. I look forward to your sharing them with us.

Best apple perfumes for Rosh Hashanah

Normally I try to change things up a bit for variety’s sake, but this Rosh Hashanah I’ve decided to make all of you want to eat or drink something delicious; no mercy for you, I fear. Let’s start with a By Kilian which is now exclusive to boutique and online, Apple Brandy.  If we’re going to celebrate, we’ll go big or go home – and By Kilian Apple Brandy will warm your cockles. Although apples are not listed in the notes available, it doesn’t mean that you can’t smell them. Everything regarding the Hennessy family cognac business provided inspiration aplenty in this amply boozy elixir redolent of apples and spirits of excellent quality: notes of oak and cedar, the depth of labdanum and judicious dose of vanilla furnish a realistic snifter experience. Clearly Mme. Lancesseur knows her craft; Apple Brandy makes your mouth water. All you really need now is a crackling fire and your loved ones. Raise a glass to the New Year. By Kilian Apple Brandy notes: oak barrel accord, cedar, labdanum, vanilla

Ginestet Botrytis best honey perfume

Collage by Michelyn unsplash and her own bottle of Botrytis

Ginestet Botrytis is one of the classics for gourmand bon vivants, created (once again) by a company renowned for their Bordeaux wines since 1897. They released two wine-inspired fragrances in 2008, Sauvignonne and Botrytis, but it was Botrytis which became a cult perfume. Its name derives from a beneficial “noble rot”: a fungus which, under specific conditions, concentrates the sugars and sweetness in grapes, lending a dried fruit flavor/aroma. Botrytis is a honey-lover’s dream: unctuous, spicy, dripping with tones of caramellic sweetness, a delicate rum adornment, and rich amber nuance of freshly-baked honey cake studded with fruit. It is the sweetest of my chosen three, and unapologetically so; you’ve been warned. You can wear your festive cake and eat it, too. Ginestet Botrytis notes: amber, honey, honey cake, candied fruits, white blossoms, grapes

Hermessence Ambre Narguilé best perfume for Rosh Hashanah

Collage by Michelyn  unsplash and her Hermessence Ambre Narguilè

Perhaps one of the best loved honey-and-apple perfumes available is Maître Jean-Claude Ellena’s famous Hermessence Ambre Narguilè for Hermès. From a gentleman known for aquarelle-like fragrances, Ambre Narguilé is the exception to the rule: opulence and more opulence, a hedonistic romp with the hookah where more is definitely better. Impossibly decadent apple/cinnamon/honey/sesame/tonka pastry smells exotically Eastern, a festivity in itself, an embarrassment of olfactory and culinary riches. Once more, the presence of rum augments an already alcohol-laden libation, a honey-sweetened mulled wine which is heady, no matter the eau de toilette classification: patisserie and potable in one go. Hermessence Ambre Narguilé notes: cinnamon, honey, rum, caramel, tonka bean, vanilla, benzoin, coumarin, labdanum, tobacco, sesame, white orchid, musk

Honorable mentions: honey/cinnamon/apple: DSH Hanukkah Cannelle (Holiday No.9). Apple as rose in a grassy garden: Hermès Un Jardin Sur le Toit. Floral honey: Aftelier Honey Blossom. Honey musk: Ava-Lux Honey. Peachy suede honey: original Patou Que Sais-Je?. Appley dappley: Demeter Sour Apple Lollipop, Demeter Jolly Rancher New Green Apple, DKNY Be Delicious. Candy Apple: Nina by Nina Ricci.

  • I didn’t know about the connection of honey or pomegranates to Rosh Hashanah. I don’t have a favorite honey/apple fragrance, but the By Kilian line has really been making a splash the last few years, and I have several of their scents on my list to try. I’m now adding this one – Apple Brandy.
Excited to try Hermessence Ambre Narguilé if drawn.
    In Louisiana USA.

  • Mohamed Tarek Ahmed says:

Growing up in middle communities Rosh Hashanah was celebrated by my neighbors with all the sweatiness of cakes and honey. I love Apple Brandy by Kilian and more excited to try the newest Apple Brandy on the Rocks now it’s released

    Lexington, Kentucky

  • I learned about 613 seeds in the pomegranate. I’m definitely not counting them, so I choose to believe. I don’t know if I have ever tried an apple/honey fragrance, but I’m really happy that Hermessence Ambre Narguile is the prize. It is the one that I most want to try. I am in the US.

  • Ida, this really was special
We commemorate the creation of the world and new beginnings, a clean slate. It really got me thinking
I would love to win Ambre Narguile i have heard it is amazing
My favorite honey fragrance is Zoologist Bee
    happy new year

  • Thank you for reminding me of Ginestet Botrytis, Ida! I use to wear that back in the day and should have a small amount left somewhere. I learned that asking for forgiveness (as an individual and as a community) has become a tradition at Rosh Hashanah and I think that’s a lovely gesture more religious people should emulate. I love Amber Narguile and would be delighted to win it. I’m in MD, USA.

  • I didn’t know that we eat pomegranate and that they supposedly have 613 seeds! The 3 perfumes you talked about are amazing, and I would like to include Lann Ael and La Danz de Libellule. Shana Tova from New York..I would be thrilled to win Amber Narguile to wear in the coming fall season.

  • Ida! What a fabulous review! ❤️ These scents are fascinating! ❤️ I had no idea Maison Ginestet made perfume! How clever! I’ve always thought perfumery has much in common with oenology (terroir of materials, harvest conditions, blending, olfaction, etc.). I’ll have to figure out a way to sample their Botrytis, Sauvignonne, and Le Boise! By chance, I’m wearing a sample from the wonderful people at LuckyScent of Kilian’s Apple Brandy On the Rocks. I don’t know how much it compares to the original Apple Brandy, but it does open with sharp apple, citrus, & brown aromatics somewhere between a Calvados & Brandy de Jerez. There is brown sugar, soft maple caramel, creamy vanilla, along with subtle clove, dried rose, and smoke that all remain quite airy & silky. The fresh chopped wood aspect reminds me strongly of Limousines oak barrels. I would love to compare this with the original formulation of Apple Brandy!
I would Love to sample 2008 Ambre Narguile! What an amazing opportunity! Thank you for this chance! USA

  • Rachel Part 2
ps – I forgot to add, Happy New Year! to all who celebrate new beginnings at any time. ❤️ I learned that pomegranate has a spiritual & symbolic meaning during Rosh Hashanah. How lovely. I believe the pomegranate has at least 613 seeds! I did a 3 month pastry stage once upon a time & spent hours breaking down gorgeous pomegranate. The best way is actually submerged in water, interestingly. Best wishes to all! ❤️

  • I love apple scents, and I love Jean-Claude Ellena, so I’m surprised I don’t know about Hermessence Ambre Narguile! My favorite apple scent is Jo Malone Peony & Blush Suede. So interesting to read about apples and honey and Rosh Hashanah. I didn’t know about that connection! I’m in NYC, USA.

  • By Killian, apple brandy is unparalleled and unique and makes me wonder having honey with apple cloud be a new adventure worth waiting for to test delicious notes crafted with such care such Hermessence Amber Nargule.
    N Y City USA.

  • i wasnt aware of this festival before , a jewish new year , interesting and the pomegranate reference was something very deep and positive. Havent tired any Apple/honey perfumes yet but would love to . Excited for Hermessence Ambre Narguilé. USA

  • After reading the review i tried reading more about it and found out that its a 10-day period known as the Yamim Nora-im (“Days of Awe”). Nine days after the first day of Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur, which means “day of atonement is observed .
My fav honey perfume is Grapefruit Blossom Honey The Naked Bee. In NYC,US

  • I used to work for my grandmother’s kosher catering company growing up in New Jersey so I have a familiarity with most Jewish celebration. I didn’t know the part about the pomegranate though; how fascinating! I love apples and honey so it’s surprising that I can’t think of a single fragrance that I have or have smelt that has the combination of the two, at least not yet. All the ones you described sound amazing though!

  • My neighbor is Jewish and is celebrating Rosh Hashanah. Now that I know more about the holiday I may make him a honey cake or even some fresh honey and apples. What a fun way to observe the holiday!

I need to try some apple/honey perfumes – this is a fragrance combination I have not sought out yet. Ambre Narguilè sounds divine.

    I am in Indiana, USA

  • Nothing wrong with wanting to start with a clean slate and it’s important that we do reflect on things. I do enjoy Habdan and Oajan as fragrance along the apple/honey line. Thanks for the draw! From Indianapolis, Indiana.

  • Very interesting traditions on Rosh Hashanah. The pomegranate symbolism is something I didn’t know about. I’ve never heard of Ginestet Botrytis. I’m going to investigate that one. Although I’ve not tried Ambre Narguile, I have sampled a couple from the Hermessence line and really enjoyed them. My favorite honey/apple scent is Gallegher Fragrances Rose all Dae.

Thanks for the giveaway! In the USA.

  • I can’t say I learned something new about Yom Teruah. However I’d love to be chosen for this draw. I don’t readily know of other apple/honey fragrances. US

  • My mom would always make her famous “Deep Dish Apple Pie” drizzled with honey for Rosh Hashanah. It has been 9 years since she’s been with us but I can still smell and taste the apples and honey in that cake..mmm. Thanks Mom! This has always been a wonderful time of year for our family.
Out of the 3 fragrances in this article, Hermessence Ambre Narguilé has been the one to grab my attention the most. USA

  • Fun review. I loved the fact about the pomegranate. I would think that 613 lifetime good deeds/commandments followed is a low bar… but that’s not a bad thing for people like me 😉 My favorite honey perfume is Gold Knight by Killian. So unique, yet it grows on you quickly. Cheers from NC, USA.

  • Is based on lunar calendar {Rosh Hashanah) that happens on different day each year according to the solar calendar but actually falls on the 1st or 2nd of the month of Tishrei (it’s Tishrei that moves around each year!! One of my favorites is by Killian & I can’t wait to get my nose on apple Brandy on the rocks!!! Besides that Montale Paris Honey Oud (I love it)

  • Happy New Year 5782 – this, that is, Rosh Hashanah is the celebration of a new year, is the first thing I learned from Ida’s reviews of the three perfumes. And then about the traditional observances at this time of the year, plus the significance of pomegranates. All the reviewed perfumes seem delectable. Don’t have a favorite apple and honey perfume, yet, though, if Montale’s Honey Aoud counts, that would be it. Thanks for the reviews and draw. From USA.

  • What I learned about Rosh Hashanah was the interesting fact about the pomegranate. I completely agree by the way, I would not want to count all of those seeds! It’s very interesting to think about though, because 613 good deeds seems like a lot, but spread over many years it is in fact not that often. I am still not sure what makes a deed good per se, but the pursuit of such a goal is very noble. Reviews like this are why I love this perfume blog so much because the meaning behind perfume is absolutely beautiful. The perfumes mentioned sound lovely, and although I can’t say I’ve ever put my nose to a perfume that was apple and honey dominant, I have heard wonderful things about By Killian’s Apple Brandy. The description makes me want to smell it even more, and as a gourmand lover I am sure that I would love it. Best regards from IN, USA!

  • I’m in California and I’m ready for a new year. I like the focus on introspection for the first ten days: What really matters? Not just a single day with a boatload of resolutions. Apple is a tough note for me but I love some honey. Slowdive is a masterpiece of honey but that Patou Que Sais-Je? is a dust of honey over fruit on me that I love. Thank you for the article and the draw.

  • I wish you and all our Jewish friends here a Happy Rosh Hashanah, Ms. Ida! I am not Jewish but I love the idea of this introspection, a formal season of reflecting on how one has responded to others and what is truly important in our lives. My favorite honey-themed dessert is traditional soft honey cookies, thinly iced, and our German heritage family prepares these treats at Christmas. As per fragrances, how deep is my love for Botrytis! When I think of truly gourmand honey scents, Solstice Scents Sun-Warmed Honey with its sunny apricots and other gingered fruits also comes to mind, so sensual and rich. And for beverage, also the magnificent Viktoria Minya Eau de Hongrie. Not entering.

  • Bryant Worley says:

I learned this about Rosh Hashanah: “A pomegranate in the household represents both the harvest and the Torah; it is said to contain 613 seeds ” (definitely didn’t know of the Pomegranate connection, or the seed count).

I was only able to think of one fragrance with honey AND apple in it: Rose`all Dae by Gallagher. But, separately: Jean Paul Gaultier Ultra Male (apple) and By Kilian Back to Black (honey).

I live in Waldorf, Maryland, USA.

  • Shana Tova! I knew about the foods and the wishing of the new year to others, but not of the asking for forgiveness. Apples and honey I definitely associate with Rosh Hashana. All three of the fragrances highlighted in the article sound so good. I don’t actually have any apple/honey perfumes in my collection.

I’ve longed to sample Ambre Narguile, so I’m excited to enter this giveaway. I live in the USA. Thanks for the giveaway!

  • MarkMarkMark678 says:

I’m not Jewish but I am Christian and believe in the Bible so because of that I do have massive respect for the Jewish nation and culture and history.

I was unaware that Rosh Hashanah was about new beginnings and I think it is a beautiful occasion again not driven by commercialism.

Some of my favorite honey fragrances would be
    Lenvol by Cartier
    BH Exclusive by Uniquee
    Back to black by Kilian

    Apple:
    Layton
    Boss bottled
    Oajan

  • kalexander1710 says:

I learned that the pomegranate seed represent the good deeds that a person aspires to in their lifetime. Love that! And also that apples dipped in honey symbolize the sweetness in life. I haven’t really tried many apple or honey perfumes yet since I am fairly new to fragrance.

  • This is the most information I’ve ever learned about Rosh Hashanah, so thank you for that. All I knew before was that it was Jewish New Year. My favorite apple perfume is Poisoned Apple from Black Phoenix Alchemy Lab. For honey, I have a sample of a discontinued Possets scent called Tricky. (California)

  • sephrenia300 says:

What a lovely article, thank you Ida! I loved learning that a pomegranate are said to contain 613 seeds that symbolize the number of good deeds /commandments one is supposed to keep or aspire to in their lifetime. Such a worthy ideal. We should all aspire for such a high number of good deeds.

I haven’t tried many apple perfumes but my favorite would be Zoologist Panda, crisp and refreshing. My favorite honey perfume has to be A Lover’s Tale by Francesca Bianchi. It’s described as leather perfume but it has a prominent honey note that is so well blended it brings out the narcotic nature of the jasmine, sensual and rich. I live in the US.

  • Rosh Hashanah , its the celebration of a new year, and the traditional practices at this time of the year. All the Perfumes mentioned sound lovely, and also I have heard a lot about Killian’s Apple Brandy, post review i want to smell it even more. My favorite honey frag is zoologist bee and Rituals of Ayurveda Rituals
    From USA

  • Rachel PS
Jumping on here to add a honey perfume: Noteology’s Honey Blossom! ❤️ I’m smelling it now with the windows open (a crisp 50 degree morning) and it’s brilliant! Rachel Syme mentioned that this slightly chill earliest fall weather reminds her of sandalwood (Twitter) & this brought to mind Honey Blossom! For me, this is a beautifully soft wildflower honey, pear, rose geranium, sandalwood scent perfect for the gentle, mild morning. ❤️

  • Thank you for the great review Ida.

I did not realize that Rosh Hashanah had so many traditions associate with it, especially the one of asking forgiveness – that is unique.

My favourite fragrance that has apple in it is one from a niche hours called Mammoth Alive.

Thank you for the draw – Always wanted to get my nose on Ellenas Ambre Narguile.

    Cheers from WI, USA

  • I didn’t know anything about the Holiday before reading this but anything that deals with forgiveness is a good thing to me. I don’t have any apple brandy fragrances in my collection would love to try one. I do love By Kilian as a house.

  • Hermessence Ambre Narguilè sounds so yummy! I love that it has a sesame note in it. The only other fragrance I know of that uses that note is Navitus The Embrace.
I have a few scents that I like that have an apple note in it – first being Roberto Cavalli by Roberto Cavalli. But one that is more gourmand that I love is Oajan by Parfums de Marly.

    I live in the US.
