For Sniffapalooza Spring Fling 2024,April 13, 2024, the weather held up with a minor sprinkle for the 65 attendees. The scent trek was a delight hitting the pavement in and around “Scent Alley, (or as Michelyn dubbed it, “The Fragrance District”).

With ten stores to  visit and sniff, then lunch, it went off without a hitch. Of note, Elizabeth Street has regained a vibrancy not seen since before the pandemic.

Malin + Goetz downtown

Malin + Goetz Sniffapalooza Spring Fling 2024

Sniffapalooza Spring Fling 2024 kicked off at 10 am at Malin + Goetz which hosted the group for a light breakfast and a presentation. The accommodating staff showed the extensive collection of skin, hair, and body products. The brand has a range of luxury fragrances and candles inspired by traditional apothecary ingredients. All the products are made locally in the New York area. They only use the highest quality natural ingredients and are never tested on animals.

LE LABO downtown

LE LABO Sniffapalooza Spring Fling 2024

Le Labo’s Flagship boutique’s atmosphere is pure artisanal with its quintessential fragrance and candle collections on display. The attentive staff is always on top of our desires. The clean and cozy Lavande 31, the most recent scent in the collection, received some love from the group. The ancillary line of laundry wash along with the Body-Hair-Face are on par with the fragrant counterparts. The annex next door caters to men’s grooming and beauty requirements. A most serious stop for all to experience.

Korres, one of Greece’s iconic beauty brands has been producing skincare since 1996. internationally renowned for its all-natural line of cosmetics and grooming products, the seed-to-skin brand focuses on clean, ingredient-first Greek beauty formulations. Everything is sourced exclusively from Greece, supporting Greek farmers. Korres is certified by Peta.

Combined with scientific expertise in phytotherapy, this sophisticated apothecary offers personalized herbal cosmetic remedies as well as soulful storytelling through fragrances and candles.

Scent Bar manager, Vijay Uttam

Scent Bar NYC store manager, Vijay Uttam

Luckyscent retail store ScentBar is the premier destination for the group. Fragrance specialist and store manager, Vijay Uttam, is always a delight to converse with on all that’s new and upcoming. He and his perceptive staff welcomed us into their temple of scent. The assortment of top-notch selection of independent niche brands is most impressive. My fragrant attention was drawn towards Tutu Extrait de Parfum by Gritti, Bianco Latte Eau de Parfum by Giardini di Toscana, and Escapade Gourmande Extrait de Parfum by Maison Mataha. (don’t forget to use code CFB for great benefits)

Mizensir Soho Boutique

Lunch at Little Italy’s La Mela is a five-course affair paired with a line-up of seven speakers. Much ado about everything!

Hez Binkowitz of HEZ Parfums

Hez Binkowitz, Founder of HEZ PARFUMS

Hez Binkowitz, the perfumer for Hez Parfums captured the group’s attention with his story of the inspiration behind the brand. His fragrance creations represent experiences he had before his life was turned upside down with the tragic loss of his and his wife Devorah’s beloved daughter, Henya Binkowitz. He created Hez Parfums to honor and share the memories of his life and his daughter. A native New Yorker, his childhood was spent all over the country, Memphis, Brooklyn, Sacramento and in New Orleans, which his roots were planted and his family was started. Self-taught, Hez challenged himself to make fragrances that truly smell unique and succeeds in bottling NOLA; its diverse culture, sights, music and food. We all had a chance to smell his collection and were most impressed (watch Steven’s Video. My standouts were Cafe BeignetBanna Bread Banshee, and naturally, Bourbon Street!

Karen Dubin presented three fragrances from three distinct houses. Apple Brandy on the Rocks by KILIAN PARIS is an olfactive soundtrack to New York City’s nightlife by Perfumer Sidonie Lancesseur. Reserve Exclusif by Vivamor Parfums an Amber Spicy fragrance that’s deliciously smooth, sweet, and slightly spicy, by Francis Kurkdjian and Jerome Di MarinoNavitus’s Splendeur Absolu is a captivating fragrance with notes of rum, chocolate, and Madagascar Vanilla was composed by perfumer Bertrand Duchaufour with creative direction from fashion designer Victor De Souza.

Christel Mena, founder of BAÑOMARIA presented East River Run, a fusion of New York City moments on the waterfront. With its white florals, citrus accord, and salty base, it impressed. And Finca, an homage to her grandfather, the best coffee farmer in Honduras. While not a coffee scent per se but more of a scent of comfort. Its notes of honey and spices encapsulate a warm and cozy atmosphere, and its tobacco and leather base are meant to remind us of a place, or person, older and wiser.

Stephen Dirkes spoke of his ongoing curated Perfumery Program experience on the island of Grenada which includes garden tours of floral, citrus, spices, herbs, and grasses used in perfumery, to pairings, tastings, and delicious palate training at The Tower Estate. His upcoming trip in May includes many participating brands: D.S. & Durga, Xerjoff, Casamorti, Kilian Paris, Les Editions De Parfums Frederic Malle, Laboratorio Olfattivo, Maison Tahite, Alex+,Tuttotondo, Nateeva, Giardini Di Toscana, Navitus, Vivamor, Heretic Garden, and Euphorium West Indies. Nils Beeman, Sales & Marketing Manager for TRUDON presented The Versailles Collection. Versailles and Trudon have shared a common bond for more than three centuries. As the former royal wax manufacturer for the royal families until the French Revolution, Trudon helped create glorious and enchanting moments at the Versailles castle with its candles. The scent comes with green and floral notes inspired by the legendary gardens of Versailles.

TRUDON SoHo Boutique

TRUDON SoHo Boutique Sniffapalooza Spring Fling 2024

To close out our fabulously fragrant-filled day the TRUDON boutique was the perfect after lunch stop. The short walk over to the new location on Spring Street gave us all a chance to pause before arriving at this bijoux boutique. Founded in 1643, Trudon is the world’s oldest candle manufacturer. The attentive staff makes it a pleasure to delve further into the brand’s history and discover its olfactive delights. The highlight was the Versailles Collection.

Thank you, Team Karen (Karen Dubin and Karen Adams) for a scentually wonderful Spring Fling 2024 to remember. Looking forward to seeing you at the Fall Ball 2024!

  • Attending Sniffapalooza must be a dream come true and I look forward to one coming to TX. Thank you for the introductions to new fragrances as well as updates on well-known bangers. I must also say that Gustavo Romero’s suit looks quite well tailored to this untrained eye:) I’m in TX

Thank you to the organizers and contributors for creating such a memorable event. Looking forward to the next one and hoping to join in the fragrance adventure soon!

I sounded like a fun time for fellow fragrance enthusiasts to gather and check out some fragrance shops in the area. DS & Durga and Akro both sound like nice houses to check out. I live in Maryland USA.

I’d love to visit D.S. & Durga and TRUDON, I want to smell everything! I love this review of Sniffapalooza, it felt like I was there, almost. To be able to go un the future would be a treat. I live in Oregon.

  • (Colorado, USA) First of all, the most interesting thing about Spring Fling is the opportunity to visit so many fragrance stores! This makes me want to save up my pennies to visit NYC for next year’s Sniffapalooza. The Naxos Apothecary is now on my list of places to seek out..even if online. Thank you for bringing these places, faces, and perfumes to our attention!

  • WillRhodes says:

Wow! What a fantastic spread of some amazing lines. I see a lot of familiar brands here that I really love, and Banomaria is one I’m not well acquainted with but would love to get my nose on this line. This is an exciting opportunity to discover some amazing fragrances.

  • What a great scented stroll down scent alley Hernando. I really feel like I was there and hope one day to attend a Sniffpalooza. Since I live in the middle of nowhere, I would enjoy visiting scentbar, DS and Durga and listening to all the guest speakers, especially Christel Mena of Banamaria, Hez Binkowitz who is getting alot of buzz, such an inspiring story. Stephen Dirkes of West Indies. The idea of making my own custom perfume at Olfactory NYC is also appealing. My perfume would def have vanilla, oud and tobacco.
    Thank you for this chance

  • What a great review and an excellent way to highlight an event like this. A grab bag from the event is the perfect introduction to some of the brands I’ve never smelled before.

    From the USA

  • How nice the weather wasn’t too bad for this adventure. I would love this event as I love walking and exploring new cities. (My city only has 3 or 4 fragrance destination). I didn’t realize Mizensir has a boutique. I would love to visit Scentbar (I order samples from Luckyscent and it’s my dream to visit one of their locations). Korres would be a highlight for me, I love their skincare. I love that the event carried on into lunch. Thanks for the chance to sniff a few offerings from this fun event. Hez would be the brand I have most interest in after reading his story and of course I love NOLA. Thanks for sharing this great event. USA – WA state.

  • It’s been a long time since I attended a Sniffa. Hernando provided such fun details, especially of stores I’ve not visited. I would love to revisit Le Labor and I’d love to visit Scent Bar– been to Lucky Scent but not Scent Bar. Thanks for the drawing. I am from the United States.

  • Sounds like a fun time! I’ve never been able to attend a Sniffapalooza but I can imagine it would get overwhelming really fast. I like the idea of different fragrance shops playing host to the participating perfumers. I would love to visit TRUDON next time I’m in NYC. MD, USA.

  • Thank you, Hernando, for such a thoughtful and thorough review of this experience! I always wish I could be there, but your highlights gave me a wonderful taste of it all. Wow, would love to get to stop in at the ScentBar, Mizensir, DS&Durga, and especially TRUDON… Loved hearing about all the speakers – I have been very interested in trying Roja Dove’s Elysium, and PURE GRENADA sounds like something to watch for! Thanks for this generous giveaway, I live in NH, USA.

  • I was at this Sniffapalooza and it was amazing! Lots of free goodies, food, presentations, and meeting new people. I love Malin + Goetz , DS & Durga, and Mizensir and will be going back to Olfactory to make my own fragrance!

  • Amanda32828 says:

This is my kind of event. What a fantastic experience! From the very nice and well-attended breakfast to the visit to all the different shops, Malin + Goetz, Le Labo, and others, I would have loved the possibility of participating in an event like this. I can only imagine all the beautiful smells and conversations. I would have love David Ecker presentation of The Elysium Collection by Roja Dove. The whole event tt sounded like a very enjoyable experience. Commenting from Orlando, Fl USA.

  • Very cool to read about this trip, and the renewed vibrancy of Elizabeth St/Scent Alley/The Fragrance District! I enjoyed learning about The Naxos Apothecary as I had not heard of it before but enjoy Korres. Also always fun to hear about new and exciting fragrances! Thanks and hello from CO, USA!

  • I am impressed at the comprehensiveness of the tour and would have enjoyed the perfumed breakfast an M&G. For me Scentbar and LeLabo would be high on my lost for must visits. So many scents o would want to try and am sure Scentbar would hit the bill on that. In the con us.

  • These Sniffapalooza events always seem like a lot of fun, taking the expo feel and giving it some room to breathe along “the Fragrance District.” I noticed the mix of vendors—not just fragrances for sale, but also candles and skincare products. I’d love to visit Scent Bar NYC someday or one of the D.S. & Durga boutiques. The Mizensir Tonic Water fragrance sounds ideal for warm weather with that unusual combination of Sichuan pepper (which probably hits a little floral?), cardamom, incense, and vanilla. Gustavo Romero’s presentation about the Fragrance sounds interesting (FAN should be a productive endeavor) as does Stephen Dirkes’ talk about his Grenada Perfumery Program. Thanks for the coverage, Hernando.

I’m in the midwest, CON USA.

  • Scent Alley-now that’s on the ol’ bucket list to visit! Hernando lays out a day of strolling casually about, visiting the different boutiques and getting to know more on a personal level. Especially like the mention of TRUDON for the historical aspect. I always geek out over that stuff. Would love to visit this shop and of course Mizensir, DS and Durga and Scent Bar! Hez Binkowotz has really caught my attention with the inspiration for his work tugging on the heart strings and love for New Orleans. Bourbon Street has such an addicting quality and i can’t wait to sample his entire line. Cheers from Ohio! 🙂

  • Ofactory NYC would be my top choice to visit because would be awesome to have a customized scent made on-site! There are a ton of scents I’d love to sniff, lead by Mizenir’s Tonic Water but also including Navitus Splendeur Absolu and BAÑOMARIA’s East River Run. All of these will go on my Want To Sample list! Great review of what sounds like a wonderful, heavenly day!

  • foreverscents says:
