Roja Parfums Elysium Eau Intense Review (Roja Dove) 2023 + “Rebirth and Renewal” Giveaway

“Each time we exhale, the world ends; when we inhale, there can be, if we allow it, rebirth and renewal. It all transpires inside of us. In our consciousness, in our hearts. All the time.” — Tom Robbins

There’s a lot to unpack in the above quote from novelist Tom Robbins, but what truly resonates with me, the olfactively-obsessed, is the assuring notion that each inhale brings with it a sense of rebirth and renewal. I once wrote, in similar existential contemplation, that to observe each breath is to observe life itself. To smell is to breathe. I’m excited by the promise of renewal, reimagination, re-anything, really. Similarly, I was excited to learn that Roja Dove’s newest release Roja Parfums Elysium Eau Intense would be a reimagining of his 2017 megahit (and one of my all-time favorite compositions) Elysium Pour Homme. Will it bring a sense of renewal or is it just a rehash? Exhale and read on.

Roja Dove of Roja Parfums

Roja Parfums has always set the bar for opulent, special-occasion compositions. With Brittania, Diaghilev, Haute Luxe, Chypre Extraordinaire, A Goodnight Kiss and a lustrous crystal-capped lineup of others, Mr. Dove’s library has always been replete with red-carpet-level head-turners. Enter Elysium Pour Homme in 2017, a head-turner of a different kind. Easygoing and carefree, Elysium, in both its eau de parfum and parfum cologne formulations (the latter priced to expand accessibility into the Roja universe), became instant bestsellers for Roja Parfums and redefined the idea of casual luxury. Aptly named, Elysium (a word defined by Merriam-Webster as “a place or state of ideal happiness”) is a heavenly cocktail of sparkling fruit accords atop delicate florals, smooth clean musks and soft woods. Punched up with black pepper and juniper berry, this signature blend further established a new niche within the world of niche perfumery. Often-copied, but heretofore unmatched, only Roja Dove could rival Roja Dove and positively expand on this hallmark creation.

Roja Parfums Elysium Eau Intense, released last month with much fanfare (and community buzz), takes and breaks the genetic code for Elysium, restructuring its proportions and expanding its mosaic of accords into something wholly new, yet assuredly familiar. If Elysium was perceived as a watercolor abstraction on pulpy, cold-pressed paper, Elysium Eau Intense is a mixed-media fusion of watercolors and oils on textured pulled canvass. It could also be considered a reverie for rhubarb. This purple/green accord is lifted by the bolstered grapefruit in a push and pull of unripe versus ripe, an energetic tension relieved by the sweetness of blackcurrant and orange blossom and by the softness of rose and jasmine. Part of the appeal and therein, the success of the Elysium trio is its paradox of laid-back energy.

Beach and Cliffs at Pourville, Claude Monet, 1882, public domain

The dynamic freshness of the original is recaptured in Eau Intense, but the energy is a touch more controlled, with a bit more muscle; it’s the view of the spin class from the weight room.

When we think of an “intense” version of a parfum, we often expect a formulation wherein the base notes have been amplified. With Elysium Eau Intense, in my perception, it’s the freshness of the opening which has been intensified. The frosted look of the Eau Intense bottle is apropos of its chilled vibe. And eau, is it smooth! Earthy vetiver, cedar and dry woods are revealed in the base, along with the Roja-nade of labdanum, ambergris and vanilla. Richer on every level. Roja Parfums Elysium Eau Intense renews and redefines without redundancy in the Elysium triumvirate as well as in Roja Parfums’ expanding summer line-up.

Top Notes: Bergamot, Grapefruit, Lime, Rhubarb, Lavender, Thyme, Artemisia, Musk; Heart Notes: Lily of the Valley, Orange Blossom, Rose de Mai, Jasmine de Grasse, Tuberose, Apple, Blackcurrant; Base Notes: Galbanum, Black Pepper, Cypriol, Vetiver, Cedar, Dry Woods, Violet Leaf, Juniper Berry, Benzoin, Vanilla, LabdanumLeather, Ambergris, Musk

  • One intriguing aspect of this new perfume was the assertion that the, “…the freshness of the opening which has been intensified”, rather than the base notes. US

  • fragrancelove says:

“Rebirth and Renewal” with each breath is an incredible analogy by Michael. The “signature sparkling fruit accords atop delicate florals, smooth clean musks and soft woods. Punched up with black pepper and juniper berry” is Roja’s signature Elysium blend that is revived in the intense version. the intense in the opening is increased according to Michael. Also “ Earthy vetiver, cedar and dry woods are revealed in the base, along with the Roja-nade of labdanum, ambergris and vanilla” make me want yo try this one because those are my favorite notes.

  • Michael delivered a great review here.
I didn’t know Roja Parfums was creating new versions of their most classic fragrances, but it is something I love reading. Elysium is one of my favorite fragrance from the brand; amazing for the summer and spring.
I think that Elysium Eau Intense is a new refresh of the classic one, being richer and without being redundant. I definately need to try this one. I hope I win in this giveaway.

Sounds fantastic as expected. I’m always intrigued at the amount of notes in his fragrances. A whole lot of depth going on. Thanks for the opportunity. From USA.

Elysium is within my top 3 all time favorite fragrances & I can’t wait to try this. Roja is a master of his craft.. Michael’s take on the intensified freshness in the opening really has my interest peaked!

  • johnmadison says:

Thank you for the review of Roja Parfums Elysium Eau Intense, Michael!
Sparkling fruit accords, delicate florals, smooth clean musks and soft woods all together in a bouquet I would love to wear and experience. The intense freshness of this one sounds so sexy to me, and I could imagine this to be a perfume I would often reach for and feel confident wearing out.

I’ve never tried the original, but I tend to like chilled or frosted versions of fragrances. An intensified freshness sounds really good to me. I live in Maryland USA.

  • Michael is certainly right about the fanfare surrounding the release of this fragrance. During its opening week it was immpossible to scroll through social media or YouTube and not see this bottle plastered all over the place. Like Michael, most seemed to be thoroughly enjoying it as well. What intrigues me most is the rhubarb and I was thrilled to see Michael talk about it being quite prominent in the fragrance. I love how rhubarb walks the line between dark fruit and bitter green, it has me salivating thinking about it. It’s also great to hear that Roja has added a few additional facets to the Elysium profile, while rearranging the DNA at the core, making it familiar but not redundant. I also really love the bottle design of this one, there’s something about the frosted glass and the almost concrete look of the cap that I find really attractive and well-suited for a potential signature scent. I would love to give this one a try. I live in NC, USA.

Hello from Florida, and thank you to Michael for the review! Elysium Eau Intense sounds so fresh and beautiful. It was great to read about how the new release compares to its predecessor.

  • David dePicciotto says:

The mixed medium of watercolors and oils is a nice way of describing the re-engineering of the dna. Also love the bit about the freshness opening. Would love to add this to the collection. Huge citrus freshie fan.

  • lillian33 says:

Wow! This sounds spectacular. The fruit accords, smooth florals, musks and soft woods all together in a beautiful captivating scent! Sign me up! From Ct USA

  • sukhbirgill says:

Based on Michael’s review, Elysium Eau Intense by Roja Parfums is an intriguing fragrance that reimagines the beloved Elysium Pour Homme. It presents a familiar yet intensified olfactory experience, with a multidimensional blend of contrasting notes. The mixed-media fusion of watercolors and oils on textured canvas creates a vivid image of the fragrance’s complexity. The interplay of purple/green rhubarb, bolstered grapefruit, blackcurrant, and orange blossom, along with soft rose and jasmine, offers a vibrant tension that is both invigorating and comforting. The fresh and chilled vibe, represented by the frosted bottle, adds an intriguing twist. With earthy base notes of vetiver and cedar, combined with labdanum, ambergris, and vanilla, Elysium Eau Intense promises a rich and captivating sensory journey. It successfully builds upon the success of its predecessor, delivering a renewed and redefined experience that invites exploration.

Bought a traveler size and it’s crazy and smacking. It’s a head turn around by passers by .

  • ianbradleyandrews says:

The way the review describes fruit on top of florals on top of soft woods sounds delightful. I’d love to win and live in Indiana.

  • I’m also surprised that the freshness in the top is amplified in an “Intense” version of Elysium. I’ve heard mixed things about the performance of this one. Nevertheless Roja’s always have the “money” smell to them and the bottle is stunning as usual. Cheers from NYC.

  • Roja is a genius and intrigued to see how he has conjured up a new configuration of my favourite notes (fruits, florals, musks, woods). So tried to try this one! NYC US based.

  • RonaldProkes17 says:

I thought Michael did a great job with abstracting how the new intensity of the composition manifests. I think that’s so hard to do, so my respect to Michael. It sounds like it is a more focused and refined take on the Elysium DNA by pushing in all the right places and overall coming off very smooth. I am always intrigued by Roja’s use of a slew of ingredients. It sounds like it comes together very well in this composition. And the Roja base is of course legendary with his own version of ambergris.

  • WaltherP99 says:

I’m familiar with all 3 brothers of the Elysium family, and my opinion of the new Eau Intense is similar, but not the same compared to what Michael Devine is getting.

“takes and breaks the genetic code for Elysium, restructuring its proportions and expanding its mosaic of accords into something wholly new, yet assuredly familiar.”

    Well said
I do agree from the first spray if you could trace the origin of the Eau Intense to the two older brothers, but at the same time I believe there’s also quite a bit of departure from the Pour Homme and Parfum Cologne common DNA. Like Michael said the purple/green accord is lifted, but to me it’s not that the “freshness of the opening which has been intensified” , i think it’s leaning less on sweeter grapefruit, but more of the aromatic, even floral side . Rose I do not get, but Lily of the valley, lots of Rhubarb, lavender and violet leaf .
At no point of time I get “Earthy vetiver” in both Pour Homme, Parfum Cologne or Eau Intense, but clean woody variety the Elysium family is known for.
I do agree there’s no redundancy at all, since like I said Eau Intense smells and wears differently .
If I have to rate my favorite Roja Dove fragrances
    1. Vintage , very first release , know as “paper label” of Enigma Pure Parfum
    2. Sweetie Aoud / Manhattan

  • I love the sound of the smooth, chill opening of this fragrance! And it contains rhubarb, which I love and which is also so great for summer. I’d love to win a bottle! I’m in MN, USA.

  • Bonnie J Beck says:

Michael’s review beautifully captures the essence of Roja Parfums Elysium Eau Intense, highlighting its innovative approach to reinventing the original Elysium. The description of the fragrance as a mixed-media fusion of watercolors and oils on textured canvas perfectly conveys its artistic and dynamic nature. Michael’s observation about the intensified freshness in the opening, along with the rich and captivating base notes, showcases the depth and complexity of this fragrance. Overall, it’s an insightful and enticing review that piques curiosity about Elysium Eau Intense.

  • Elysium is legendary and Michael makes clear that this new flanker is a worthy addition to the line. As a big fan of rhubarb notes, this variation sounds especially intriguing. I’m in Oklahoma, USA. Thanks, as always, for the generous draw!

  • I appreciate that it is the refreshing opening that has been intensified and if so if matches that beautiful bottle.

  • chrisskins says:

Call the midwife; I’m giving birth to a new lemming! So the notes were heightened at the aerie, not the basement. Very exciting for an Intense version, but especially a Roja. I was just hunting for my Roja 51 Pour Femme hair mist for a spritz before bed and voila, this review appeared. How the long list of notes sing to each other is what makes a Roja creation special for me. Thank you for the opportunity. I live in NY.

  • It seems opening notes instead of base notes have been intensified in Elysium eau intense and rhubarb plays a major role in the composition. USA.

  • That huge note breakdown (like most Roja Dove’s) is what intrigues me most. I’ve never tried any of the Elysium line so this would be an entirely new experience for me.

  • Such a beautiful review, Michael. I am a big fan of the original Elysium and am excited to experience the new Eau Intense iteration with intensified freshness of the opening and deeper Roja-nade, as described by the author. I live in KY/USA.

  • Great review Michael!

I think it’s a great idea for Roja Parfums to update their classic fragrances. Elysium is one of my favorite fragrances from the house. I definitely need to try this new release. New Jersey, USA

  • hautebrother says:

Great article! Always excited to read about a new Roja Parfum. I’m intrigued by how smooth the new blend promises to be. Most of his collection has a very dense body and tons of sillage. An amped up Elysium is a perfect choice for the hot Summer months.

  • Intensified freshness with rhubarb for a tart citrus combo sounds glorious. Great review. I’d love to get my nose on this. From the USA.

  • I love the section where Michael wrote,” It could also be considered a reverie for rhubarb. This purple/green accord is lifted by the bolstered grapefruit in a push and pull of unripe versus ripe, an energetic tension relieved by the sweetness of blackcurrant and orange blossom and by the softness of rose and jasmine.“

I think that exactly encapsulates rhubarbs effect in certain compositions! I’ve quickly put my nose on this sequel masterpiece and what I got in the opening was more on the rind side, that slightly resembled an eau givree/uden overdose juiciness. I fell in love and I hope that my chances of getting picked will bring me and “ely” together

I live in the Bay Area of California, serves as perfect weather for such a supreme freshie!

Thank you Michael for your very descriptive review of Elysium Eau Intense. From the rhubarb to the frosted glass, you’ve allowed my imagination to take on an olfactory perception of this creation. As one who enjoys Elysium Parfum Cologne…I’m excited to experience this wonderful flanker and cannot wait to add to my collection.

I really appreciated the art imagery Michael ised to explain this offering. It really gives a vivid picture of what the fragrance is like. I haven’t experienced any Roja fragrances but I can tell the quality and artistry holds premium consideration when he creates. This giveaway is quite generous and, whoever the winner will be, they will get to enjoy a masterpiece. Many thanks to Twisted Lily and many blessings from Virginia, USA!

  • What interests me about Elysium eau intense is this more chilled uplifting energy that Michael feels from this fragrance. I enjoy the original Elysium, yet I always felt it could use something else for a different occasion. The tartness that the rhubarb brings could be exactly that component that grounds the fragrance. Looking forward to hearing more about this one.
    Cheers from Illinois, USA!

  • Unfortunately the original Elysium didn’t last on me at all, I’m not sure if I had an old sample or not. Based on that I never purchased a full bottle. The fact that the article mentions that this version has “more muscle “ makes me hopeful that this one will work with my skin because I really enjoyed the scent while it lasted.

  • I have tried a sample of Roja Parfums Elysium which I recall as being very fresh smelling and appropriate for the warmer summer months. It seems the freshness is still present in the intense version but appears primarily in the opening notes. I Love the addition of rhubarb which I don’t believe was in the original and the interplay of fruits and floral notes which contributes to its lain-back energy. I’m in the US.

  • I fell in love at first sniff of Elysium Pour Homme and the three other Rojas I’ve tried therefore I’d expect the same reaction from the Eau Intense variant. Michael’s review bolsters this expectation of another beautiful, rich and complex creation from Roja Dove. Thank you for the very kind giveaway and I’m in Texas USA

  • What intrigues me the most is definitely the rhubarb note. As a lover of rhubarb ecarlate by Hermes, I’m curious to know how Roja fit the note in with that Elysium style DNA. MI, USA.

  • I haven’t tried any Roja perfumes, but I’m always struck by the consistent, beautiful bottle design. The brand’s presentation is both classy and easy to identify. I’m glad Michael included a description of both Elysium formulations; it gave me a sense of how Intense compares to the originals. I also noted the “reverie for rhubarb”, since that note is a personal favorite, and the tuned up freshness in the opening will make Intense a better fit for this warm weather.

I’m in the contiguous U.S. Thanks for the giveaway!

  • This intrigues me because it’s not actually a flanker that is building based on the OG, but takes a different direction then the original Elysium and isn’t just an stronger version than the OG. Also, the rhubarb note sounds interesting. I live in NYC, USA.

Bespoke fragrances is what Roja is known for , i’m a tailor who makes bespoke suits , we match well
I’ll gladly wear “the dynamic freshness of the original” in a new suit , Elysium Pour Homme is my go-to for the past few years, and I’m eager to smell the new Eau Intense.
The posh zesty woody combination i present again , with more muscle and purple/green accords added .
I can see myself wearing Elysium Eau Intense with Zegna fabrics Carolina Blue Linen suit.
Roja Dove is an expert in all he does , no wonder almost all fragrance enthusiasts , and critics puts him on such pedestal. My favorite Roja Dove is Amber Aoud Absolue Precieux , mesmerizing scent , and like i said Elysium Pour Homme Parfum Cologne i wear at least once a week.

  • Beautiful review by Michael of Roja Parfums Elysium Eau Intense that was very well written. What sparks my interest based of Michael’s review is redefining and fragrance without redundancy. With frosty and fresher, smooth and more chilled take on the original masterpiece. Thank you for such an amazing giveaway!!! Greetings from the USA.

Roja Parfums “Elysium” is one of my favorite fragrances and I’m glad to own a bottle of it. I’d love to win a bottle of “Elysium Eau Intense” because I know I would truly appreciate it. I’m intrigued to try it when Michael mentions things like: “the freshness of the opening which has been intensified”, the “Earthy vetiver” (I’m someone who enjoys the vetiver in the Parfum Cologne), “Richer on every level”, and “Elysium Eau Intense renews and redefines without redundancy in the Elysium triumvirate”. I live in MD, U.S.A.

  • Farewellsmell says:

Very informative and descriptive review by Michael. What really interested my was Elysium’s comparison to an oil painting, with the blackcurrant, grapefruit, and floral notes mixing and playing off of each other. The addition of the Vetiver makes it sound incredible for the colder or more formal occasions. Would love to see how this performs on my skin.

Such a high level of perfumery Roja Dove is, there’s no denying it.
Michael Devine take on Elysium Eau Intense made me think of making , and later on eating the famous Rhubarb Grapefruit Custard Cake , and drinking freshly squeezed grapefruit juice , while sitting on the beach on some tropical island. I like Elysium Pour Homme Parfum Cologne version, I’m pretty sure I’d like Eau Intense too.
Sweetie Aoud , fragrance made to mimic the smell of French Pastry Shop, and particularly freshly baked croissants is my favorite Roja Dove , Creation-E is my second favorite , hard to get invited into , old private gentleman’s club , with cognac and tobacco smell lingering all over it.
Appreciate the review , and the giveaway campaign

  • Michael is obviously super impressed not just by the latest releases, but by Roja fragrances as a whole , and we know he’s right. Almost feels hе is somehow connected with the brand, like some were made for him specifically.
Adventurous, classy ,different fragrances with its own DNA , and look , in my opinion Roja Dove is literally the epitome the the luxury, and now even the casual luxury too.
Other than Michael enthusiasm , the other thing that intrigues me the most, is the the resemblance of Eau Intense and the original , but at the mean time it also introduces different pleasing rhubarb , different grapefruit elements, and some chilled vibe.
Maybe it’s a rebirth like Michael called it , maybe something else, but I do feel delighted now.
By original I mean the Parfum Cologne blue bottle with the golden cap i have the pleasure of owning, the most luxurious Elysium with the black cap I’ve never smelled.

The the best grapefruit available , delicate rose and jasmine , all smoothen with vetiver , it sounds really, really good, and I also think very much lavish Summer fragrance.
I’m also curious about how good of a fragrance Elysium Eau Intense is, if Michael Devine thinks it’s even better than the Elysium Pour Homme mega hit .
Favorite Roja Dove Vetiver Pour Homme Parfum Cologne and Creation-E Parfum . Both I’m a huge fan of , both are in my possession.

  • One of the best in my opinion (the original)! This Eau Intense version has to be even better. I can not wait to try this one! Thank you for the draw. In the US.

  • I’m impressed by how well Michael Devine depicted all Elysium Eau Intense characteristics, and most importantly how we’re almost at the same page.
There’s no denying Elysium Pour Homme is a bestseller for a reason. I’ll be honest when I find sprayed Elysium Eau Intense i was almost shocked how much different it is in the opening, compared to its predecessor, to me the opening is dominated by rhubarb and lavender. The similarities do come alive in the base , and drydown. Yes grapefruit is more unripe, you could say the more muscle touch is there ,and it’s really smooth. Where I differ with Michael is the vetiver, it’s not earthy to me, and I smell leather is the base to. Summer nights will be the most appropriate time to wear Eau Intense.
Risque for Men i love and own , phenomenal scent , and the best Roja Dove fragrance i’m familiar with .

What intrigues me about Michael’s review on Roja Parfums Elysium Eau Intense is first the opening of the article quoting Tim Robbins and about every breath of fresh air we take and touching upon the original Elysium from 2017. I love how he compares and contrasts Eau Intense with the original Elysium using a painting canvas as reference. It sounds like instead of being darker and more complex the freshness of citrus and aromatic notes are amplified. I would love the opportunity to win this giveaway. I am from Ohio, USA.

  • I’m intrigued by the statement that Elysium Intense could be FRESHER than the original! Elysium has a sparkling, fresh opening that I can’t imagine being better!
