Rogue Perfumery Derviche II Review (Manuel Cross) 2021 + Don’t Hold Back Giveaway

Rogue Perfumery Derviche II review

Rogue Perfumery Derviche II by Karl

“To expect the unexpected shows a thoroughly modern intellect.” Oscar Wilde, 1895.

Words which resonate deeply when anticipating what scented delights await.  Certainly, in the case of Manuel Cross.  A perfumer with a cultlike status known for thoughtful vintage creations with a modern twist.  I did my due diligence, researched his backstory, his love of the classics, expertise in the culinary world.  So, it was fate that all I had presumed would be turned upside down.  That has been the case with Rogue Perfumery Derviche II.

The definition of Derviche, is one that whirls or dances with the abandonment of a dervish.  A series of overwhelming movements.  The name aptly describes a scent of many aspects, one that transforms like dusk through till dawn. Unlike its predecessor, Rogue Perfumery Derviche II is not simply an amplification of the hookah vibe of the original. The ingredients are very similar, but, utilised in completely different proportions. Derviche II is slightly reminiscent to me of the fragrances that have become the cornerstone of the ‘nouveau riche’ boudoirs.  However, here is a complex amalgamation of those ostentatious wafts of the social climbers and the ambitious.  Perhaps it is a ‘tongue in cheek’ humorous wink to the movement of vulgarism and ‘lux glam’ niche perfumes done with nuance and true intelligence.

Manuel Cross serves up a scent so audacious and impactful as to create a ‘whirling dervish’ of commotion.  It brought an instant smile to my face.  My friend’s response on first experiencing it was, “Oh my goodness, this doesn’t hold back, it just grabs you immediately.”  When I asked her, on which occasion she would wear the fragrance for she was very direct.  “To conquer my dear.”  Expressed with a cheeky grin and a raucous laugh.  A scent such as Derviche II doesn’t require over analysing.  It is riotous and playful and wild.  A fragrance to wear and just be carried along for the ride.

Best Rogue Perfumery fragrances

One wears a perfume  such as Rogue Perfumery Derviche II as to make a statement.  For reckless abandon and happy times.  The opening is a huge blast of tart citrus with a cloak on incense floating beguilingly around and it is truly dynamic and powerful. Whilst the original Derviche plays on syrupy tones; Derviche II is very fruity up top and has a vibrancy to it.  This brightness is a distinct facet of the fragrance, which clings to the skin throughout its lifespan.

Moreover, like the tumult of a roller-coaster, Rogue Perfumery Derviche II has many tight turns and steep slopes.  The citrus opening is a prelude to sugary goodness.  There is an almost rock candied essence half an hour in that mixes temptingly with the long-lasting incense.  It is such a surprising and entertaining transition, which, draws you in deep to the heart of the perfume and is a rich, opulent sensation.  Pure unadulterated excitement is created from these macerated fruits topped with a dusty sugary aspect.  Surely a nod to Manuel Cross’s culinary expertise. Tartness, sweetness, being wrapped around in a dusty and slightly smoky incense. How can one resist?

However, it gets even better.  When one feels that there are no more surprises left to experience, the secret to Derviche II has been intelligently and slowly hidden and suddenly reveals itself in layers of musk.  This is the most interesting facet to the scent to my nose.  The musk pulses out coaxing and teasing one cheekily and then unannounced peeking through into our consciousness comes Vietnamese Agarwood (Oudh).  Suddenly, we take yet another turn.  The perfume becomes heavier and deeper (whilst the musk balances the scent brilliantly) the smokiness of incense is also enhanced, and this devilish nuance reveals itself.  This is the phase of the fragrance, which reminds me most of its counterpart.  In Derviche we are treated to labdanum and tobacco.  Here we are teetering on the edge with Agarwood and dried fruits.  Just as I feel the scent is becoming overloaded and too much, in enters the softest vanillic base to smooth things over and centre one’s thoughts to calm the ride.

Manuel Cross has brought an incredible amount of creative license to Rogue Perfumery Derviche II. His aim is to take us down the rabbit hole of artistic perfumery.  I consider this achieved.  Whilst I mentioned at the beginning that it is reminiscent of the ‘nouveau riche’ in his hands this scent surpasses that notion. The fruits never become overly tart. The sugary candy vibe never cloys. The woods never attain complete domination.  It is a hugely complex and challenging task to take on and balance so many aspects, yet he succeeds in delivering a scent that is excessive, but, refined.

As a result, Derviche II hits the spot.  It has presence, punch and vibrancy and is completely unisex and multi-dimensional.  A scent that lets people know you are present.  There’s an urgency to it that speaks volumes. Wear it  when you into a room and you’ll hear whispers “WHAT is he is wearing.”

Notes: Citrus, Mediterranean Herbs, Incense, Agar Wood, Sugared Fruits, Amber, Vanilla, Musk.

  • You had me at “noveau riche boudoir” and “reckless abandon”. Musk and incense. Thanks for the chance!

  • The amazing notes and uniqueness of the fragrance strike me, I live in Poland, EU, I don’t have a favorite Rogue Perfumery fragrance

  • NituNicolae says:

Agar wood(Oud) is so misterious when it is done right! (not barnyard style in its more raw form). If the great Gatsby would like to wear this, I imagine it should smell deep, luxurious and rich(pun intended). Great review, amazing opportunity. From Romania, EU.

  • I’ve been meaning to grab a sample of both Derviche and Derviche II for a while. I try to keep my collection small and to not buy based solely on bottles/names/themes, but Rogue always temps me with their vintage style. Though that’s not to say the juice doesn’t intrigue me as well. I am admittedly a sweet perfume fan and it sounds like Derviche II could satisfy a sugar craving without going overboard. USA

  • Love how Karl mentioned The Great Gatsby. Reckless and abandon. The notes are beautiful love a sweet Fragrance. This is something I definitely would love to own. Thank you for this Chance. USA

  • Hi! What an interesting and intriguing fragrance! I love when a perfume has different layers and some notes stays in the entire life of the fragrance on skin. That’s why Rogue Perfumery Derviche II caught my attention! It sounds amazing! The fruitiness, the incense, musk and vanilla blended in symphony makes it perfect! I really enjoy the review and definitely going to learn more about the house of Rogue Perfumery. I’m from Massachusetts, USA.

  • Oh boy, this perfume is really a box of surprises, isn’t it? “Tartness, sweetness, being wrapped around in a dusty and slightly smoky incense” and to close it up, the musk! It surely deserves to be smelled by everyone and I would love to try it.
    I live in the USA
I haven’t tried any Rouge Perfumery fragrance yet, sadly.

  • Manuel’s culinary background certainly is reflected in his perfumery. It also makes distinction above typical gourmands. It seems that Derviche II can give experience of not only the tasting but also the ambiance of exotic places.

  • AleksCipri says:

I was so excited to see Derviche II in the title! I could not wait to read Karl’s description and thoughts. I tried Derviche II when it first launched and I was just blown away. I must admit Dervish was ok for me, but not one of my favorites (Mousse Illuminee and Champs Lunaires are my favorite and those I already own, although I adore many more and plan to buy a couple more bottles). I find Derviche II completely different than Derviche, and it was interesting to learn that it actually shares many of the same ingredients but in different proportions. Manuel is an artists, his creations just bring me so much joy. I completely agree with Karl’s description and his conclusion – Derviche II is so complex but perfectly balanced, none of it’s components ever take charge and dominate they are just a perfect harmony. Yes, Derviche II is on my full bottle wishlist from Rogue! I’m from Illinois, US.

  • Mirea Luca says:

Never tried any of the Rogue Perfumery fragrances, but this sounds simply exquisite. Agar wood is something that i try to establish in my fragrance rotation, and the oudh in this, tamed with the sugared fruits is something that i would love to try. Great review! Thank you for the opportunity! I live in Romania, EU.

  • This scent seems dark and alluring, but also has unexpected twists and turns. I love fragrances that morph on the skin, giving a multidimensional experience. I would love to try a sample of this one!

    From USA.

What struck me most was Karl’s friend’s review of the fragrance. From just the notes alone, they sound pleasant but not groundbreaking. But, the review really makes this fragrance sound gorgeous. Also, I think the bottle matches the vibe of this fragrance quite well. This is my first time hearing of Rogue Perfumery, so I don’t have a favorite yet… but I would love for this to be my introduction. Kind regards from IN, USA.

  • I absolutely adore the three Rogue perfumes that I own: Chypre Siam, Tabac Vert and Tuberose and Moss. I love Manuel Cross’s complete inhibition with the use of his materials. In Derviche II, I am intrigued by the incense and sugared fruits notes and what they become at his hand. Thank you! I am in the US.

  • The use of Vietnamese oud in Derviche II is particularly interesting, and how so many disparate notes are in perfect balance without overpowering one another. Chypre Siam is my top favorite from Rogue

    CA, US

  • I need to experience any perfume where the perfumer aims to “take us down the rabbit hole of artistic perfumery.” Yes, please! I also want to conquer, my dear.

I have not tried any Rogue Perfumery fragrances, yet. But, I plan to now.

    Illinois, US

  • “As a result, Derviche II hits the spot.”
Big time YES , Derviche II is right up my alley type of fragrance, sounds fantastic. Karl Topham review reminded me of making, and later eating
Crème Anglaise Cake , with Macerated in Bourbon Berries, and Sone Fruits, and Powdered Sugar . I do make it once a week at my bakery, usually every Saturday.
I’m also happy to learn Manuel Cross is not only a perfumer, but most importantly a fellow Chef ‍
I will sample Derviche II ASAP
Appreciate the review, and the giveaway campaign

  • Karl!!! ❤️❤️❤️ Wow! What a spot-on fabulous review of a gorgeous scent! ❤️ Manny Cross & Rogue are a household favorite (currently in rotation: Chypre Siam & Jasmin Antique). We absolutely Love this house and wish Manny every success in the world! Derviche II is a fascinating scent and we adore its development and especially the dry down. Beautiful and stimulating. Thank you for this wonderful opportunity! Someone will be so lucky to win this scent! ❤️ USA

  • BostonScentGuy says:

I was struck in particularly by the differences noted here between Derviche and #II. I loved the original, but love hearing that there’s a brightness to this that cuts off some of the syrupy unctuousness of the first intrigues me…I love the sparkling incense part of it, so I feel like this might highlight my favorite parts of the scent! I love many of Manuel Cross’ scents, particularly Flora and Fauna, Chypre Siam, and all of his tuberoses! Thanks for the draw–I’m in the US (Colorado).

I think all is said with: “A scent such as Derviche II doesn’t require over analysing. It is riotous and playful and wild. A fragrance to wear and just be carried along for the ride.” Unfortunately, I never had the chance to try any from the house…
    Hi from Croatia, EU.

  • What a wild tide Derviche II sounds. From fruity through seeet to musky agarwood as a whirlwind. I woud definetly love to be taken to this ride.
    I’m in Eu.

  • I am always interested in statement perfumes! This strikes me as being a party perfume 🙂 I haven’t sampled any Rogue Perfumery fragrances yet. Thank you for the review- writing from the EU.

  • emorandeira says:

Rogue perfumery is a great brand and Manuel Cross an artist. The image of this mix of tobacco, labdanum and oud seems to be very elegant and sexy. I really would like to try the perfume.
I have not tried Many perfumes from this brand, but the Inés that I tried are all great. My favourite is Champs lunaires.
I am writing from Spain (EU).
Great review from Karl Topham as always!

  • Wow, after reading Karl review, you feel and urgent need to try Derviche II, enter a crowded bar to be questioned with a lustful smile: what are you wearing?. Manuel Cross did it again: what a work, what a collection of scents he is, quietly, creating from his lab (I wonder what he would cook when he is in his kitchen too). The exhausting dance of the derviches into a scent but without the exhaustness, because Mr. Cross creates a perfume audacious to grab you from the first sniff: the tart , vibrant and bright citrus. But in successives turns, the smoky incense, the musks, the oud, the candied fruits and the softest vanilla to calm down the dancer in his ritualistic and hypnotic dance. All in one, but as Karl says the scent and his dance master Mr. Cross succeeds in delivering a scent that is excessive, but, refined. My favorite Rogue Perfumery fragrance is Vetifleur, a very personal very green chypre. I live in Spain, EU.

  • Great review Karl, as always! The review was great, detailed and I really got a sense of how Derviche II smells! I smelled the first Derviche and loved it, as I did with every Rogue perfume I smelled – Bon Monsieur, Mousse Illuminee, Derviche, loved every single one of them and this one seems incredible.

The note listing seems incredible – Citrus, Mediterranean Herbs, Incense, Agar Wood, Sugared Fruits, Amber, Vanilla, Musk. WOW, what a combination, I’m dying to try it out!

I live in Croatia, EU and I follow Cafleurebon on Instagram – my @ is @il.dolce.papi!

  • I find it interesting that a master perfume can be created with so many changing facets from such a short list of notes. It is really intriguing. I hope I get a chance to experience it. In maryland.

  • Literally every facet of this scent is something that I love. You described citrus fruit, incense, a sweetness and musk? All in one fragrance? This sounds heavenly! I would love to get the chance to try this one out. I live in the US in the state of Virginia

  • This seems so perfectly balanced, strong notes that don’t get too strong, softer notes that don’t disappear so fast… Lovely! I didn’t try any Rogue Perfumery fragrance.
    EU

  • Derviche II sounds like an absolute, extreme olfactive rollercoaster ride down the meander of notes, with unexpected twists and turns. From fruity citrus to sweet to musky to oud and finally settling down to vanillic, it seems to make sure it can satisfy every nose and heart.
I have unfortunately never tested a Rogue Perfumery creation yet and I live in the EU.
    Thanks!

  • As a result, Derviche II hits the spot.

I am struck by the notes especially agar wood, Incense, vanilla and musk. I don’t have any experience with this house. Great review by Karl I am intrigued by this house. Thanks a million from the United Kingdom

  • Thanks for introducing the house. I saw Rouge perfumes on the Indigo Perfumery website, but never knew anything about them. Now, I am intrigued and will try some of them. I live in the US.

  • One wears a perfume such as Rogue Perfumery Derviche II as to make a statement. For reckless abandon and happy times. The opening is a huge blast of tart citrus with a cloak on incense floating beguilingly around and it is truly dynamic and powerful. I am fascinated by the notes especially Citrus, Agar Wood, Incense and musk. My favourite from this house is Flos Mortis. Thanks a lot from the UK

  • I was struck by the promises of the workings of the musk. I don’t have a fave Rogue at this time. US

  • First I love almost anything “tongue in cheek” so Karl had me with that phrase. Derviche II sounds like such a party fragrance. Really this is something I must try, though I haven’t tried any other Rogue Perfumery scents. I am in the US.

  • I love agar wood (oud), incense and woody perfumes. From Karl Topham’s review of Rogue Perfumery Derviche II, it seems this is a very balanced perfume, with fruity and sugary vibes well-balanced with other notes. Rogue Perfumery Derviche II seems to be a lovely perfume I want to try. Unfortunately, I have never tried a Rogue Perfumery perfume so no favorites, yet. Thanks for the review and draw. From USA.

  • IvanVelikov says:

I’m impressed by Manuel Cross life journey , I truly am. I admire people who know what they want in life, and most importantly how to achieve their goals
Derviche II feels smooth, refined, but also alluring. I like how Karl described the fragrance, and the way the sweetness, woods and the incense are complimenting each other.
Thank you Karl, and Rogue Perfumery
    USA

  • I love that the hidden layers of musk are teased out over time. The fine balance between “excessive” and “refined” in this fragrance sounds intoxicating. I haven’t had the chance to try a fragrance by Rogue Perfumery. Based in the UK.

  • What interest me most about Rogue Perfumery’s Derviche II is the unabashed approach it takes with its scent profile and delivery. I love me a good statement maker. One that is instantly present and as captivating as it is dominating. A fragrance that, unless worn with the utmost confidence and swagger, will wear you instead. I am also curious as to the transition and balance between incense, agar wood, and sugared fruits contained within the fragrance. Rogue Perfumery has certainly found it’s footing within the fragrance community and I would love to finally be able to sample one of their releases. Thanks, as always, for the opportunity and cheers from Illinois, USA!

  • I must say, I know nothing from the house, but what a review 🙂
It does sound very, very interesting how the perfumer used almost the same ingredients as in the previous Derviche, but changed the ratio, having as a result a very different story. A story now I am really curious to ‘read’ 🙂
[vulgarism and lux glam niche, muahahahaha.]
    I am in EU.

I have to say Karl Topham review of Derviche II is spot on,his opinion is just about the same as mine.
Like Michelyn posted out in “Top 10 Indie Fragrances” article , and Karl confirmed, compared to the original Derviche, some of the notes between the two are the same , but tweaked in different proportions , but some are completely different.
I own 75ml bottle of original Derviche, and I’ve sampled Derviche II , and to me the two are VERY different.
Slightly different bottle yes , because I bought it long ago, presentation is a bit different now.
Derviche to me is tobacco heavy, and much thicker, and sweeter .Derviche II is fruity, effervescent , with ambery base , and definitely there’s no tobacco in it , at least I don’t get any.
Depending on the situation, both Derviche and Derviche II could be considered “conquering” , and seductive fragrances.
If I have to rate my favorite Rogue Perfumery fragrances:
    1. Derviche
    3. Derviche II
    3. Tabac Vert
    All profiles I already follow , @waltherp99bg

  • Thank you for a great review Karl. Rogue Perfumery Derviche II now joins Mousse Illuminee on my ever growing wait-list of fragrances that must be tried. I’ve not yet had the pleasure of sampling from this house yet but this review has my taste and nose buds buzzing. I’m sure Manuel Cross having started out as a chef works it’s way to nose and tongue 🙂 I’m in USA

  • Thanks for the review Karl!

I and my partner love Musk. We always have and will always will. It was an enjoyable read, but when you described the Musk pulses out coaxing and teasing one cheekily and then unannounced peeking through into our consciousness comes Vietnamese Agarwood (Oudh), you really caught my attention. I’ve become a bit of a fan of Oud and even thought we have a faint amount of Musk fragrance, I have not experienced this in combination with Oud. I would love to experience it!

A friend of mine gave me a sample of Mousse Illuminee and I can’t stop smelling the sample! Amazing fragrance and I can’t wait to try Derviche II!

    Greetings from the UK!

  • I’ve always wanted to try something from Rogue perfumery and Derviche is high on my list. I didn’t know Derviche II was released; it sounds absolutely gobsmackingly good! I love perfumes with a well done fruit note that isn’t too cloying so right up my street. Marit UK

  • I haven’t had the chance to try Rogue-Perfumery yet, but Derviche II sounds very mysterious with all the different notes unveiling themselves slowly but surely. Musk and incense..yes, please! I live in Indiana, USA

  • This sounds like so much fun to wear! The complexity is great and I love the evolution over time. Citrus, musk, and oud? Yes, please. I don’t yet have a favorite Rogue scent. NC USA

  • GennyLeigh says:

I was introduced to Rogue Perfumery through CaFleureBon! I purchased a discovery set and fell in love with several of the fragrances. Champs Lunaires was my favorite from the set. Unfortunately, I did not get Derviche II but the citrus, incense, vanilla and amber blend sounds lovely. MD, USA.

  • Wow Derviche II sounds really good , thank you Karl for the captivating review
Perfectly balanced fragrance with sugared fruits and candies, and long lasting incense , start the fireplace, the night is ours.
    Thanks for the draw

“My friend’s response on first experiencing it was, “Oh my goodness, this doesn’t hold back, it just grabs you immediately.” When I asked her, on which occasion she would wear the fragrance for she was very direct. “To conquer my dear.”
Now, that’s what I want from my perfume! Don’t have a favorite, I admit to never have tried any fragrance from Rouge perfumery.
    Sending warm hugs from EU!

  • I never had the chance to try any of the Rogue Perfumery. Oudh is one of my favourite notes, more like the clean oudh, not the dirty one. It just adds something of a personality to the composition. Loved the review! I am from Romania.

  • I’m just in love with the resinous fragrances, Derviche II seems like a never-ending party after this review. Also didn’t know the definition of derviche before. I live in France, EU.

  • petergigov says:

    “To conquer my dear.”
Rogue Perfumery Derviche II check all the boxes, it’s sweet, smoky, inviting and with high compliment factor.
I like the parity between the rock candy’s smell , and the incense.
I would wear Derviche II when I’m going out, or on a date.
    Exciting giveaway, USA
    Regards

  • The Rogue Perfumery fragrances I’ve tried are all impressive, and they seem pretty opinionated too, with the original Derviche being no exception. While my favorite Rogue (Mousse Illuminée) utilizes layers of soapy green, it sounds like Derviche 2 manages to be simultaneously resinous, fruity, musky, and tart, plus I’m intrigued by anything with a smoky incense note lately.

    I’m in the Midwest, USA.

  • What strikes me ? ” A series of overwhelming movements”. I’m compelled to try a fragrance described in this manner. The ” rock candied essence” and the presence of incense only heightens anticipation.
I live in Pennsylvania, USA. My favorite from the brand is Mousse Illuminee

  • I was curious about all the positive attention Rogue Perfumery received last 2 years, and decided to buy the official sample set from their own website.
Karl Topham work on Derviche II i find impressive, the fragrance grabs you , and don’t want to let go
The macerated fruits are easy to perceive , I also find the fragrance quite boozy. In a way reminds me of Cherry Liqueur, and particularly cherry brandy , where the cherries are crushed and macerated in brandy , with an assortment of herbs and spices.
In Derviche II i smell strong aromas of sweet cherry, spices, and marzipan. The palate has a thick, syrupy texture with intense notes of cherry and plum. Wood , incense and spice also show up in the background , with a smooth, herbaceous, tart finish.
Seductive, provocative, flirtatious, Derviche II is just awesome
    Thank you for the opportunity

  • Derviche II sounds like a statement maker. This fragrance doesn’t sound linear and seems to be multidimensional with twists and turns ranging from vibrant sweetness to musk and incense to vanillin base and woods. I have heard a lot about Rogue perfumery but I don’t have a favorite fragrance yet.
    Maryland, US.

  • Definitely a journey down the rabbit hole of artistic perfumery. Full of surprises and twists and turns. Looks like the perfect perfume to “To conquer my dear.”
    Hugs from Romania

  • I have yet to try anything from this house, so I don’t have a favorite Rogue Perfumery fragrance, but I was quite struck by the idea of a sugared candy or fruit alongside a rich musk and oud. All the while the dustiness of incense lingers in the air. Thanks for this review!

  • One of my favorite movie is Great Gatsby which is a classic story of opulence. I love musk and incense fragrance and would love to try Rogue Perfumery Derviche ll as I have never tried a fragrance from this line. Thanks for the giveaway. I live in USA.

  • Michael Prince says:

What interests me about Rogue Perfumery Derviche II is Karls detailed review about this statement getting fragrance. Rogue perfumery’s classic styling with a modern and unique twist. A fantastic blend of sweet, fruity, sugary, resinous, incense and oud that sounds truly delightful. I haven’t tried anything from Rogue Perfumery, but would love to try this. I am from the USA.

  • I got the Rogue sampler and am incredibly impressed. Both Derviches are addictive to me— the opening of Derviche 2 is like fireworks, it just floors me. My favorite is actually Flora and Fauna, though they all make me happy. (USA)

Thank you for the great writeup Karl!

Lovely review Karl! What strikes me about Rogue Perfumery Derviche II is that it’s composed of almost all the same ingredients as Derviche II , just in different proportions, and that this play on concentrations of the same material creates an entirely different incredibly complex fragrance. This is the type of daring perfumery and innovative inspiration that is really attractive to me, and I absolutely can’t wait to try Derviche II.

I live in the US. My favorite Rogue Perfumery fragrance is the original Derviche, just a stunning floral leather amber – three of my favorite things, all in one opulent fragrance.

  • I love that Manuel Cross wants to take us down the rabbit hole of perfumery! I love that Rogue Perfumery Derviche II makes a statement. I do love citrus and incense, sounds divine!
