Philadelphia boutique co-owner and Creative Director Nir Guy of Perfumology and perfumer Justin Frederico have collaborated on a project which is selling off the shelves. Keeping up with the current demand has been challenging – in a very positive way. After all, how would you feel if your perfume was so pleasing that everyone jumped at the opportunity to purchase it? The most recent Perfumology fragrance is called Boutique, and its inspiration arises from the very air you breathe when you first enter Nir Guy and family’s fragrant emporium doors. Step into Perfumology, inhale, and come out wearing it. Nir’s concept was a brilliant one. And it’s a success, which is even better.

What the packaging says: “Long days working at our perfumery creates a unique atmosphere that changes over time depending on our customers’ tastes. Boutique is inspired by that shifting aura, fruity floral with a woody white musk base, this is what it’s like spending a lot of time at Perfumology. If you know, you know.”

What I had written, months prior to production: “Imagine what would happen if you were to interpret the fragrant sum of a day’s end at Perfumology in aromatic terms? After a good deal of analysis and brainstorming, Nir Guy and perfumer Justin Federico composed Boutique by Perfumology: a delectable fruit-and-white-floral perfume with a cozily musky base. Crisp tones of red apple are accented with grapefruit and ambrettolide, as a jasmine/magnolia heart is cossetted in dry woods, a soupçon of vanilla, and tender amber under a cushion of cedar, musk and orris. Boutique is liquid joy encapsulated.”

Perfumology is located 25 North 3rd Street, Philadelphia, PA 19106

So how did this concept become reality? Justin Frederico (who has his own brand Justin Frederico Parfums)– utilized headspace technology to assist him in interpreting what a long day spent at Perfumology would smell like. He sampled the air; he sampled articles of clothing at the end of a working day. While being given free rein by Nir, Justin set about recreating its fruity/floral/musky atmosphere, while contributing his own desire to enhance and beautify his aromatic captures.

Boutique by Perfumology in one word: blithe. Boutique elicits a tangible sense of joy in every spritz, proof positive that the phrase ‘fruity/floral’ needn’t be regarded as either a dirty word – or a harbinger of bland fragrance. The fruits, in this case – are a tart grapefruit and juicy red apple; they smell fresh and alive, and provide a sprightly introduction to the florals which escort them. One can happily discern jasmine and magnolia (each of which possess fruit-redolent facets themselves). It’s a bit of a mystery what other white flowers are referenced, as they are not specifically listed; suffice it to say that the floral aspect boasts a satisfying rondeur. The inclusion of orris is pivotal here – as its intention was “to make the perfume more beautiful” – and I couldn’t agree more. Boutique’s base is not to be overshadowed, and it is delightful, with its abundance of ambrettolide (what a glorious botanical musk!), just a smidgen of vanilla, and the arid pleasure of cedarwood; the amber mentioned is not a weighty presence, but more of a wraith. I feel that this was an excellent choice, because it contributes to Boutique’s overall balance, enhancing rather than skewing the perfume into an overly sweet direction.

Boutique by Perfumology certainly spans the seasons, but I think that it will bloom beautifully particularly during the spring and summer months. It is a versatile perfume that suits any occasion – and one which fits snugly into anyone’s collection and regular fragrance rotation.

Notes: red apple, ambrettolide, grapefruit, amber, white flowers, jasmine, dry woods, vanilla, magnolia, musk, cedarwood, orris.

Flacon kindly gifted by Nir Guy. My nose is my own.

The tall bottle truly encapsulates the atmosphere of a modern boutique. High ceilings, clean, and streamlined is what I get by just looking at the bottle. The comes the scent, a white floral and musky offering. I wasn’t a big fan of florals in the past but I must say the mix of florals with musk, it’s always welcomed. Reading the notes and the inspiration alludes a little to BDK 312 Saint Honoree but the notes certainly tell a different story. No wonder it’s flying off the shelves: it’s a perfectly timed release and also what most customers gravitate to, a musky/clean scent. Cheers from NJ, USA.

  • I absolutely adore the concept of this fragrance as it is by far one of the most unique ideas I have seen. The end product sounds like a wonderfully mixed bag of fruit, florals, and musk. As a big fan of orris and white florals, I’m happy to see them playing a central part in the composition. Ida said that this one will likely shine beautifully in the warmer months and I agree – it sounds like it would be a perfect daily wear for spring and summer. I haven’t tried any of the Perfumology brand fragrances yet, but will certainly look into them now. Best of luck to all. I live in NC, USA.

  • I am fascinated by the concept behind the fragrance. Ida had me at “blithe!” Thank you for the drawing. I have never tried a Perfumology fragrance but I would like to! I’m from the United States.

  • I was so happy and excited to hear that one of my favorite individuals has been apart of creating this beautiful scent . Seeing and hearing what the hype was and reading this review to finally getting my nose on it does not do it justice . To me it is an alluring, relaxing and vibrant fragrance. A masterpiece in my opinion. The creators of Boutique have knocked it outta the park. What I loved the most of this review was the description of the fragrance. Beautifully detailed. I visualized every element. Great Jon. I definitely would love the opportunity to own this gem.

  • Thank you for this lovely review, Ida! I had not known of Perfumology until reading your article, and truthfully I think this fragrance sounds right up my alley. I do love and admire fragrances that “break the mold”, but sometimes I really just want to smell GREAT, and it sounds like Nir Guy has made something that appeals to that for many of us. I think your reference to “balance” and “versatility” in the use of all these lovely notes is key. I love fruit, flowers, vanilla, orris and musk, but it’s the sum of their parts in excellent proportion that makes a fragrance appealing. Thank you for this generous draw, I live in NH, USA.

  • I love the review! I have visited Perfumology multiple times, and everytime I visit, I learn of a new and different fragrance to discover. I love the appeal of how this scent works with fruity and flowery notes. This scent sound absolutely beautiful. This is definitely going to be on my next buy list. So far my favorite brand from Perfumology at the moment is zoologist

  • Really looking forward to more from Perfumology, great article by you guys at Cafleurebon.

  • Excellent work by Perfumology. I think something for the summer that’s got red apple and vanilla notes done this way is a very solid fragrance, I’m glad Perfumology brought that to life.
    I live in NY, USA.

  • What a cool concept for a fragrance. It reminds me of high end hotels that have fragrances made that they pump through the HVAC in the lobby so people remember staying there. Crazy that they went through the trouble of testing the air and clothing. I’ve never been to Perfumology or tried any of their original creations. NYC USA

  • Looking forward to trying this! Aedes did a great job with their line. I hope Perfumology will do too!

I love this concept so much! What a great idea to create a fragrance inspired by working with fragrance. The notes also sound lovely. I’m still itching to get to Perfumology to experience the shop myself. One day… Thank you for the draw. From the US.

I enjoyed reading of the description of this perfume. To take the overall atmosphere of scent and make it into a perfume is genius to me. I’d imagine Boutique would be my favorite of Perfumology. I live in Oregon.

  • I use to work near the KofP mall years ago but unfortunately before Perfumology opened. Obviously, I need to visit the area again. Boutique by Perfumology sounds like a great spring/summer fragrance. The variety of florals on the cedarwood and amber base makes for a balanced and just pretty perfume. MD, USA.

  • I’ve never felt so validated as I do after reading that I didn’t need to view ‘fruity/floral’ as a dirty word. Those words together typically give me immediate apprehension.

I love the concept and can’t think of any fragrance enthusiast that wouldn’t be excited by the thought of being able to smell like someone who’d spent the entire day in a perfume boutique. Imagining just spectating as people explore various fragrances; listening to them explain their personal tastes, observing how they and the patrons that visited before and after them perceive notes and eventually witnessing the moment they find what they were looking for. Their chest rising as they inhale through their nose and when it clicks with them, their eyes close, shoulders drop, and even the most stoic might show a hint of a grin they’re forcing to not turn into a smile.

As the evening comes to an end, your skin, hair and clothes alike have recorded every visitors moment and turned it into an entirely new fragrance and that’s what I envision Boutique would be.

  • I love the idea behind this perfume. Many times i wish i had the scent of what comingles in my boxes of perrume. Very interested in the use of headspace technology withbthe perfume thatvIda mentions. Would love to visit the store andnof course win the bottle. I am in the US

  • Really enjoyed review by Ida, especially on the explanation of the concept and description of the notes in this fragrance itself. Definity a unique concept and fragrance in itself to the extent where its almost hard to imagine how it would smell without smelling it in person first. Will definitely be on my list of fragrances to look out for.

  • I, for one, have never considered a fruity floral a dirty word. In fact, I love a well-composed fruity floral that is synergistically balanced to perfection. They can be worn almost any time, depending upon one’s daring. I imagine that I could inhale a busy boutique with just one spritz of this beauty. I am in the US and
    Love Clutch.

  • What a lovely review by dear Ida. I loved her choice of the rarely-used word “blithe” to describe this happy fragrance. I was lucky enough to meet the extremely hospitable and knowledgeable Nir at his shop several months ago and received a generous sample of Boutique, which uplifting yet complex.

I haven’t tried all of the Perfumology fragrances, but another that I liked quite a lot is Grange. Thank you to Nir and Cafleurebon for the generous draw opportunity. I’m in the US.

  • Boutique by Perfumology is is a fun concept, though it initially made me think of going nose-blind in a strongly-scented space, which clearly isn’t what Guy and Frederico went for here. Still, it’s easy to imagine a few test sprays of a white floral on one side of the room, a fruity gourmand perfuming the other, and lingering woody musk and vanilla base notes persisting throughout the day. The way they arrived at this mix is surprisingly hands-on, using a headspace approach to sample the air and clothing. Also, Ida pointed out the grapefruit and apple notes smell fresh, giving Boutique a tart, lively character. Great review Ida—would love to try this.

I’m in the midwest, USA. I haven’t tried any Perfumology brand fragrances.

  • wallygator88 says:

Thanks for the wonderful review Ida.

I love both the presentation and the idea behind this fragrance. It’s so fascinating that Justin Frederico used headspace technology to actually capture aroma molecules and create a base to build on this scent.

I sort of think of this as the steady state of all the aromachemicals being sprayed in the area.

The bottle constructino is also very pretty – clean, streamlined and I like that the fragrance is not colored.

    Cheers from WI, USA

  • What a delightful concept! I sometimes find myself unable to pick out which perfume is calling to me from a boutique, fragrance counter, or even the decorative box I store my own collection in because the combined effect is so rich. Love the description of the hint of amber and the fresh red apple notes, creating a sophisticated fruity- floral with a compelling base. Thanks and hello from CO, USA!

  • Sherin Thomas says:

I love the flacon version of this fragrances. A fruit fragrance with woods in the base is perfect for the spring season. Sincere gratitude to Nir from Perfumology to bring these gems for us to try. From PA, USA

  • I enjoyed reading of the description of this perfume.
Sounds like when you walk into a mall and smells magnificent.
Ty Ida for your fantastic review!

I am very intrigued by the concept of Boutique. I would love to be able to visit Perfumology’s physical store, to get a sense of what influenced the fragrance. The fruity and musky notes in Boutique sound vibrant and alluring.

  • Ooh, gorgeous bottle! Tall, refined, classic. And as someone who’s always dreamed about what it would be like to work in a perfumery – this scent sounds like it might be the next best thing. Love that the dry down isn’t overly sweet. Ida’s reviews are always so evocative. Thanks for the opportunity – I’m in the USA.

  • I’ll be honest I’m not a huge fan of red apple but this review has me very excited to try this! The way the Iris is described and the “arid” cedar and the tart grapefruit and how it is “balanced”. All of it sounds lovely and ready for most of the year. The joy it exudes!
Grateful to Nir and everyone. Located in California
