You had me at Cabernet.

Growing up in California with a father in the hospitality sector, who was very involved with the wine community nationally and internationally, certainly exposed me to wine culture at an early age and gave me insight into certain wine matters. One was that Cabernet Sauvignon, referred to as the King of red wine grapes, is loved for its full-bodied deep flavors, high concentration, and age-worthiness.

Cabernet Sauvignon is one of the world’s most popular grapes, grown in nearly every wine-producing country. It provides the cornerstone for wines from Bordeaux, Napa Valley, Washington State, Chile, and beyond. While some Cabernet Sauvignon wines can be sumptuous and fruity, others are savory and smoky. It all depends on where it’s grown, and blended, and how it’s made. It showcases notes of chocolate, vanilla, cherry, cedar, and pencil lead, amongst others.

Just like vintage wine, Kelly Jones has updated her Cabernet a few times since its original launch in 2012. The notes for Cabernet have remained fairly consistent but with slight twists, just as a wine will differ in taste from vintage to vintage. The original Notes of Wine Collection consisted of five wine varietals, CabernetChardonnay, MerlotRiesling, and Sauvignon Blanc. Just like vintages of wine, this “WINE PAIRING” collection has different “releases”.

The Notes of Cabernet and the Reserve Cabernet (2016) were created by Christina Christie when she was at Fragrance Resources. And the latest is titled “Cabernet” and was created in collaboration with Christina Christie now at IFF (as Fragrance Resources was acquired by IFF). It launched in late 2022.

The current vintage makes it more sustainable. And, with the use of natural materials in the formula, the modification of a few of the accords gives it a more velvety feel.

Best Cabernet Wines

The opening of Kelly and Jones Cabernet EDP is the Black Cherry which is in line with a top California Cabernet. Here the Black Cherry is well crafted. There is a just slightly chemical-y when it opens but blows off quickly. So, like wine when first exposed to air, it might need to breathe to show its full potential. Then the Black Cherry turns rich, sweet, and luscious. Fruity but not too tart or tannic. The Tobacco Leaf which is commonly paired with Cherry is nuanced with a slightly sweet earthy herbaceous aroma. There is also a hint of freshly cut hay in the background. The Peppercorn I suspect is more of a green one, so light on the spice and much more cheerful. And I’m getting a rosy overtone shining through.

As for the Vintage Leather, not getting much vintage or leather here. I find it softer and more pleasant. If I recall correctly, the leather used here is not as prominent as in the original (or was it the Reserve?) release. Wine tastes that lean toward rosé and Sancerre in the warmer temperatures will shift to bigger bolder reds in the cooler weather. Fragrance wear is similar. In the spring and summer months, scents will lean more on citrus, fruit, flowers, etc. while in the fall and winter months fragrances gravitate toward the resinswoods, tobacco, mosses, etc. I find this is a unisex scent. Most definitely suitable for year-round wear. There is a romance built into the bottle! So, evening wear is ideal and it’s suitable for the office if you want to grab some attention!

Kelly and Jones Cabernet has average projection and longevity. So best worn with a few liberal sprays. A fragrance inspired by the aromas of Cabernet wine. Made especially to pair with the wine in your glass. Try it. Salud!

Notes: Black Cherry | Tobacco Leaf | No. 2 Pencil | Peppercorn | Vintage Leather

  • What I enjoyed about Hernando’s review of Kelly and Jones Cabernet is the mixture of the black cherry and tobacco leaf. I’ve always been fond of that combination and this one sounds exceptional for sure. Thank you for the opportunity. From New York, USA.

The theme of wine definitely interests me. I would of expected it to be paired with leather but this takes a new direction. May not have heard of this if it wasn’t for your article. Thanks and I look forward to more scents and niche houses I’m unfamiliar with. I would love to win a bottle. From Jacksonville, NC

Hello from Florida, and thank you to Hernando for the review!

This wine-inspired scent sounds fun — I’m always interested in a cherry note, and the combination with pepper sounds intriguing. I’d love to give Cabernet a try!

  • Hernando! Bravo! Fabulous review! You’ve made me get out my bottle and enjoy! ❤️❤️❤️ (DNEM)

  • Yes, you had me at Cabernet! I enjoyed Hernando’s review and his obvious affection for the vineyards of California. The use of notes associated with a fine Cabernet such as black cherry, pepper and tobacco leaf really piqued my interest. The vintage leather base sounds like it’s used judiciously in this iteration. I don’t mind the subtlety. I’m in the US.

  • I find the theme of wine quite intriguing. I would have anticipated it being associated with leather, but this presents a refreshing twist. I might not have come across this if it weren’t for your article. Thank you, and I eagerly await further explorations of scents and niche perfume houses that are new to me. Winning a bottle would be a delightful bonus. New Jersey, USA

  • Cabs often have lots of character and a range of textures, so I was interested to read in Hernando’s review how Christina Christie interpreted them for KELLY and JONES. Also, its notable that Jones has updated Cabernet a few times since 2012, including adjustments for sustainability—very much on theme. The hay and pencil notes are nice way of distinguishing Cabernet from other fruit-forward perfumes. It also sounds very wearable.

I’m in the USA. Thanks for the coverage and the giveaway.

  • Kelly + Jones is one of the best descoveries I had last year. The fragrances they make are just magestic!
Cabernet is yet another masterpiece they made. I love how it is inspired in Cabernet wine and they use natural materials here.
I hope I get my nose on it soon.
    US here.

  • I love getting a wine lesson with my perfume review. I’d love to wear this wine tasting, that would be so cool. I don’t mind spraying liberally. I hadn’t thought of those comparisons with wine and fragrance and the weather…..makes sense. I wonder how this would be for wearing to an elementary school for my work, I’ve been told I smell like chocolate before. I wonder if any staff would pick up on the wine note. I’d love to try! Thanks for the chance. USA.

  • Hello from Indianapolis.

I like the idea that just like a wine, each crafting is slightly different. That’s pretty cool. The creativity of pairings is a little much for me but I get it. I mean I pair my fragrances for what I’m doing/wearing/season. It’s not a far stretch but I’m not one for food or drink and worn fragrances. But the tobacco and black cherry combo sounds delicious.

I loved Hernando’s review of Kelly and Jones Cabernet. I am very intrigued by the note breakdown. The Black Cherry note coming across as Cabernet seems very interesting. Being a wine connoisseur, especially the reds like cabernet I’m interested to see how this fragrance smells. I also like the cabernet combining with Tobacco as well as a soft and accessible vintage leather. The no. 2 pencil is a pencil shaving type of cedar note I assume that also sounds great. I would love to try this creation by Christina Christie. I am from the USA.

Thanks for the nice review Hernando. I really liked how close this fragrance is to a bottle of Cabernet Sauvignon. It would be cool to give this scent to a wine taster and get their thoughts on it.

Also quite interesting to see that this fragrance, like a bottle of wine, needs to breathe a little bit, to reach it’s full potential.

I haven’t had a chance to sample this house, but hope to do so soon.

    Cheers from WI, USA
