Every fruit has its secret” – D.H. Lawrence

Working as a sommelier at top Michelin Star restaurants provided me with a world-class olfactory education. Not only did we spend our days tasting from the best wine cellars, but we also learned the rarified delicacies of haute cuisine. Nuance, refinement, and complexity jumped out from the glass and paired with similar excellence on the plate. As a sommelier, one of the first working lessons one acquires is the inextricability of taste and smell. The sensation of flavor is actually a combination of taste and smell. This happens because as you chew, you force air through your nasal passage and you both smell and taste your food at the same time. Collectively, taste and smell are known as chemical senses because each system functions to detect chemicals in our external environment. One forward-thinking creator began to ask the question: What happens when we introduce fragrance into this equation?

Kelly Jones, founder and Scent Sommelier of the Kelly + Jones brand, noticed the enhanced flavor and scent combinations of wine and perfume when experienced together.  She made the exploration of how perfume can enhance the nuances of a wine’s bouquet the central focus of her Wine Pairing Collection. Kelly lets us in on her journey by explaining, “I created the Wine Pairings Collection after I got in trouble for wearing perfume in the tasting room. Rightfully so – if you wear perfume while your nose is in the glass, it can really interfere with the winemaker’s bouquet! It inspired me to create these fragrances made to pair with the wine in the glass, enhancing all the nuances and even teaching the nose more about wine aromas – all in all, to make wine tasting so much more experiential and fun.”

Kelly and Jones Chardonnay Reserve is a fragrance inspired by the aromas of Chardonnay wine. It was made in partnership with IFF perfumer Christina Christie and designed specially to pair with California chardonnay and enhance your tasting experience. For much of the past century, chardonnay has been one of the most successful white wines in the world. It has big appealing flavors of vanilla, butter, butterscotch, green apple, buttered toast, lemon, custard, tropical fruit, and pineapple, which are matched by equally outgoing and rich textures that can be described as full-bodied, lush, and creamy. Chardonnay is a rare grape that can be grown successfully in many parts of the world, though its most famous terroirs are found in California, Burgundy, and Australia. Chardonnay is usually fermented and aged in oak barrels to develop the grape’s rich notes and creamy body. It is also usually put through malolactic fermentation to augment its buttery profile, especially in California. Chardonnay can be manipulated to produce a leaner and more mineralic style, such as a Chablis or Champagne, but the more popular soft, rich, vanillic and buttery approach maintains first place among wine drinkers worldwide.

Kelly and Jones Chardonnay Reserve opens with a lovely New American Oak accord that gives a rounded aroma of vanilla, honey, butterscotch, coconut and sweet baking spices wrapped in the lightest impression of wood grain. To my nose, a sweet-tart Honeycrisp apple note provides lift and brightness to the vanillic opening. Chardonnay’ wine’s rich and creamy body is achieved through the layered textures of orris butter, a subtle amber accord  that dries down to a cedar base with creamy and caramel edges. I paired Chardonnay Reserve with several bottles of wine and found the most successful and interesting combination to be with an oaky Napa Valley chardonnay. The perfume drew out the wine’s secondary aromas of citrus blossom, melon, and crème brûlée that I did not notice on its own. The aspect of Kelly and Jones Chardonnay Reserve that most impressed me is its pitch-perfect sillage. How the perfume creates and maintains one’s scent bubble is masterful – not overwhelming, but flawlessly present, like your favorite cashmere sweater. Excellent tonality and longevity, perfectly tuned for comfort and discovery.

Notes: American Oak, Heirloom Apple, Orris Butter, Amber, Toasted Cedarwood

Pairing an American oak accord with a chardonnay wine accord sounds like an interesting concept to try out. I live in Maryland USA.

  • oh, this sounds wonderfully fascinating! I would love to try this perfume with a variety of chardonnay’s just to see what the differences are! I’m in the US.

  • I adore the idea of pairing wine with enhancing aromas and since I have a friend who adores wines, I’m going to buy samples from the Kelly and Jones website for her to play with! That being said, I’d love to experience this myself too. I live in the USA.

  • Thanks Rachel for the great review. Kelly + Jones have never dissapointed me. I love all I’ve tried from them, being Mezcal Blanca my favorite one so far.
Chardonnay is something I must try. I love the fact that Chardonnay wine is the main note here. I love white wine and having it in a fragrance is wonderful. Also the vanilla, honey and butterscotch gives more body to it. Would love to win this one.

A complimentary fragrance to pair with wine is such an inspiring direction to take with perfume. I’m excited to find out what this ‘lush and creamy’ scent is like. I live in the USA.

  • I am most intrigued by the perfect scent bubble! To have these beautiful ingredients meet and bloom all around just sounds so amazing. And Chardonnay is my white. I live in NY and appreciate the opportunity to try this Kelly and Jones parfum.

This is such a great concept & loved hearing about your history in wine.
Loved reading this. Hopefully there’s some eu distribution

  • I didn’t realize I wasn’t supposed to wear fragrance while wine testing. Pitch perfect sillage like a favorite cashmere sweater sounds perfect for not only wine testing, but other settings where you don’t want your fragrance to announce your presence. I am not familiar with this brand. USA. Thanks for the giveaway opportunity.

  • Lovely review Rachel! And what an exciting opportunity to combine knowledge of being a sommelier with love of fragrance. Chardonnay always seemed to lend itself towards a comforting autumn scent with its notes of oak, apple and butter. Kelly and Jones seem to capture that feeling with good sillage. I’m in the US.

  • Wow, this one sounds quite elegant. I love the idea of the crisp apple blended with vanilla. For some reason I picture myself wearing this at a picnic in the countryside – baskets of fruits and bottles of wine spread out on a blanket beside a babbling brook. Enjoying life simple moments. I appreciate the chance to win this. I live in VA, USA.

  • A really intriguing idea! So Many of the materials used in wine making smell amazing, and of course wine itself has so many fragrant notes: like a perfume! I’d love to try Kelly and Jones Chardonnay Reserve.

  • Really interesting review, including Rachel’s introduction about working as a sommelier, how taste and smell are linked, and Chardonnay’s place in the wine world. Kelly Jones’ inspiration for her Wine Pairings Collection is clever; take the conflict she encountered in the tasting room and design perfumes with that interaction in mind. Kelly and Jones Chardonnay Reserve sounds like a very wearable spin on that theme; vanilla gourmand notes wrapped around oak, textured with orris and amber. I’m curious if the interaction between wine and perfume Rachel mentioned is obvious for wine novices as well.

I’m in the USA. Thanks for the giveaway.

  • Beautiful review of Kelly and Jones Chardonnay. What strikes me is how the perfume creates and maintains one’s scent bubble is masterful and not overwhelming. This is awesome as I am a wine connoisseur and Chardonnays are my favorites. Thanks for the opportunity to win a bottle of my love. Greetings and gratitude from the USA!

What strikes me about Kelly and Jones Chardonnay based on Rachel’s review is learning about a perfume that is inspired by Chardonnay and perfumed by Christina Christie. I really loved learning about the USA Indie house. One of the most popular white wines in the world that gives off facets of vanilla, butter, butterscotch, green apple, buttered toast, lemon, custard, tropical fruit, and pineapple, which are matched by equally outgoing and rich textures that can be described as full-bodied, lush, and creamy. I can’t imagine how amazing this must smell. I am from the USA.

  • Regis Monkton says:

I appreciated learning about chardonnay in this informative review. For a while now, I’ve been interested in trying fragrances from Kelly+Jones, and I’m definitely interested in trying “Chardonnay Reserve”. I’m very interested in seeing what the New American Oak accord is like and all of the nuances which seem to be in this fragrance. Also, I’m interested to see what its sillage is like. I live in the U.S.A.

Thanks for the fun review Rachel.

Kelly Jones’ offerings have interested me since I came across them on CFB, perhaps because of the interesting concept of pairing a fragrance and wine.

I like this description in particular because this fragrance seems to develop in a pretty fashion to pair with a chardonnay. The idea of keeping orris butter to keep a creamy edge to the vanillic burnt oaky butterscotch notes is quite neat.

I’m glad that the reviewer actually paired it with a Chardonnay and wrote down their thoughts. That is high praise.

    Cheers from WI, USA
