Festive Holiday Fragrances

Festive Holiday Fragrances: Perfumology Blyss, Kelly +Jones MEZCAL AÑEJO and INeKE Jaipur Chai photo by Steven

Many of us in the USA will not be able to be with family and friends for the holidays this year. Not only because of the tri-demic, but the country is experiencing a “once in a generation” winter storm and travel plans have been disrupted. Add on bone chilling temperatures, freaky blizzards, gusting winds and that hundreds of flights have been canceled or delayed. Don’t let the weather stop you from enjoying festive fragrances. Each remind me or are named for a beverage you might drink during the holidays. Cheers and stay warm – Michelyn Camen, Editor-in-Chief

Perfumology BLYSS (Justin Frederico) 2017: Nir Guy, the owner of Perfumology composed Blyss as a fragrant love letter to his wife Lyssa. For me it brings to mind, sipping Chateau d’Yquem Sauterne, which wine connoisseurs consider the greatest of the Sauternes. Perfumology Blyss, like the plummy ambery aromas and flavors of Chateau d’Yquem Sauterne, create a structure and a complexity that are at once intriguing, comforting and seductive – an unforgettable scented toast in a perfume bottle. Notes: Italian orange, white plum, green apple, Bulgarian rose, ylang-ylang, jasmine, orris, amber and patchouli.-  Michelyn Camen

Kelly +Jones MEZCAL AÑEJO (Steven Claisse and Kelly Jones) 2022: Mezcal is the newest sipping sensation, tequila’s smoking hot cousin and with Mezcal bars opening  in most major cities. Hernando asked Kelly what’s the difference? “Mezcal is made from many different varietals of agave, and Tequila is from the Blue Agave typically from the Jalisco region. varietals from Oaxaca, with a smoky heart note.” This limited edition was created as a festive holiday fragrance that celebrates Mexico City, a city that Kelly Jones spent many years in her former job with Toyota. A portion of every Eau de Parfum sale goes to Programa Vaca, a Mexico-based organization helping to rebuild in the earthquake-affected rural areas with sustainable architecture and natural materials, for long term, positive human impact. Notes: Velvet Jasmine, Leather, Smoked Amber, Guajillo pepper, Golden Peach- Michelyn Camen

INeKE Jaipur Chai (Ineke Ruhland) 2019: Ineke Ruhland, is a classically trained (she taught marketing to Givaudan’s Yann Vasnier at ISIPICA) artisan perfumer based in San Francisco and Jaipur Chai is her first gourmand fragrance. INeKE is a cozy scent with traditional chai tea spices of cinnamon, cloves topped by frothy steamed milk.  The ginger smells freshly ground and along with pepper adds piquancy so that the fragrance never smells like it’s from Starbucks. Rounded with rose wrapped in suede, and polished by smooth woods – Jaipur Chai is the perfect scent to spritz during a blustery, freezing night when the lights are flickering and icy snow is piling on top of the window panes. Notes: Black tea, cardamomginger, cinnamon, pepper, cloverosecedar wood, guaiac wood, vanilla, cream, suede, musk. -Michelyn Camen

Great collaboration Steven and Michelyn…the stories that go with the descriptions are beautiful and informative. I would love to win Mezcal Anejo, it sounds like a beautiful fragrance. I’m in Florida

  • The storm is literally hitting us just now. First comes rain…then comes marriage, then comes black ice in a snowy carriage! LOL I know, I shouldn’t be joking about it. Many could be without power this holiday season, and with the trailing “bone-chilling” temperatures, it’s not a welcoming thought. Really hope people spend the season in a warm environment. But composing a fragrance as a love letter is a wonderful idea! Really can speak to the heart and mind through the nose. Ditto with Programa Vaca. A very interesting description of Mezcal Anejo. Although I’m normally not a big booze drinker, I can dig a good leather and smoked amber fragrance in the cool weather. Always been a fan of Jaipur Chai though. Incredibly dry cinnamon and rose with a lactonic touch in the base. Great balance of vanilla in the base and wonderful for layering too! Glad that Steven enjoys it! That would be my pick. Canada.

I would love to try and have the Añejo Mezcal fragrance. Even though I personally don’t drink I am familiar with Mezcal as I am Latino and like Michelyn said it is indeed a very popular holiday drink. Steven mentioned that it’s all about leather and I’ve always wanted one. I’ve had Narcotica Dulce Diablo on my radar for a while now to buy so if this similar, I’d be in for a treat if I win.

  • These 3 fragrances look interesting as I would like to try them. As they are described, it is craving to try. I would like to try Ineke although I don’t know if it is unisex, but it doesn’t matter if you want to try it and also Bliss. In these difficult times that we are experiencing, not being able to meet with our loved ones. The way Steven describes in his video is majestic.

  • All three of these sound amazing but I think I would have to go with Ineke’s Jaipur Chai. I love Michelyn’s imagery of wearing it on a cold night with snow beating the windows as the lights flicker. I love having that type of cozy feeling amidst an otherwise unsettling winter storm. Steven’s description of all the spices and the warmth they bring, as well as the festive feeling of the fragrance, makes me want to wear it even more. Reading from North Carolina, USA.

  • Drinks are a cool inspiration for fragrances. I am a fan of interesting scents. I appreciate Steven’s knowledge about each brand. If lucky, I’d choose Jaipur Chai, Mezcal Añejo, or Blyss. All sound fantastic. Thanks for the wonderful reviews and opportunity to sniff. Mich USA Happy Holidays!!!

  • I love this time of the year and it totally deserves special fragrances. I have to say that I didn’t know any of these amazing perfumes, but would totally love to smell them three.
The one that got me hooked the most was Mezcal Anejo, since I went to Mexico and have tried that beverage and knowing it has a smoky note it totally blows my mind.
I Would love to win Kelly +Jones MEZCAL AÑEJO
The weather here is freezing cold.
    USA here.

  • I love that the inspiration for Mezcal Añejo comes from Mexico City and that the perfume sales support Mexico. I’m also really attracted the smoky, ambery vibe of the perfume as Steven described it. If I’m lucky enough to win, Mezcal Añejo would be my choice! I’m in MN, USA.

  • Great descriptions by both Steven and Michelin of these three amazing perfumes. This is the first time I’ve heard of any of them but they all sound amazing in their own sense. The perfume that interested me the most out of all of them were Jaipur chai, which sounds amazing for the current temperatures that we’re experiencing in Texas. If I were to win I’d love a bottle of it, but all of them sound incredible. From TX USA, which there is isn’t any snow yet, but the temp is steadily dropping.

  • well I say both reviews are amazing as always. Michelyn is describing all three very juicy. Out of three I preferre, I preferred the JAIPUR CHAI since it is more into gourmand way which I love. Steven mentioned that he personally preferred Jaipur Chai and cannot wait to were it.
    I am from the US
    THANK YOU!!!!

  • Michelle Bower says:

Ineke Jaipur chai sounds right up my alley. I love the notes and I love chai what more could I say? The blyss fragrance sounds lovely as well and I love anything with Ylang Ylang. When I was a you go my first deodorant spray had Ylang in it. It is a very favorite note of mine. From snowy arctic Colorado and I’m a teacher just like Steven.

  • It is unfortunate that the US is dealing with this dangerous weather in most of the country. I hope everyone stays safe and is able to be with family or friends in some capacity. I love that Michelyn chose three fragrances that evoke holiday drinks. Michelyn’s description of Perfumology BLYSS sounds very intriguing. I’ve always enjoyed a good Sauterne and the aroma is delicious, as well. Although I’m personally not a fan of tequila, I have never tried Mezcal. I have been very interested in Kelly’s newest collection featuring Mezcal. I have tried and very much enjoy INeKE Jaipur Chai. I completely agree with Michelyn’s description of this cozy gourmand. It really is the perfect scent for this bitter-cold weather.

I enjoyed listening to Steven’s descriptions of the three fragrances. I do enjoy Dulce Diablo, so it sounds like Mezcal Anejo is a must-try for me. I wouldn’t have expected it to be so gourmand based on the notes. I agree with Steven that Jaipur Chai is authentic-smelling. I love spicy fragrances and it’s my favorite from Ineke.

The weather has been very cold the past couple of days where I live. It was -45 degrees F with a wind chill of -60. We have a lot of snow but that’s typical of where I live. 🙂

Thank you, Michelyn and Steven, for the wonderful reviews of these three festive fragrances. Thank you to Perfumology, Kelly + Jones, and INeKE for the generous giveaways. I would love to win Ineke Jaipur Chai and I’m located in the USA.

  • From the written intro I learned the full list of notes of all three perfumes. With Steven’s zeal for Jaipur Chai, that’s the one I’d choose fo the draw. US

  • All three of these sound magnificent but I would love to win Ineke’s Jaipur Chai, it sounds like a beautiful fragrance. Want to see how it compares to Gris Carnel. From MA, USA.

  • This is a great idea for an article, given the weather and difficulties traveling around the country. Festive, warm, spicy…
Wonderful descriptions. I’d love to win Jaipur Chai. I love spicy tea and this fits my tastes. New Jersey, USA

  • They all sound gorgeous in their own way and very different from each other as Steven described them, and Michelyn. I want to try one from Kelly + Jones but when Steven mentioned the leather I think I should try a different blend first, I struggle with leather notes often.
The bottle of INeKE’s Jaipur Chai sounds perfect for me! I will love to win it, thank you for the opportunity.
    Stay warm folks!
    In USA.

  • All 3 of these siund fantastic. The reminder about the mezcal trend almost makes me go that direction as I love tequila. But with the winter storm the Chai teas is speaking to me right now. Jaipur Chai sounds perfect. I live in the US

  • Oh yes Michelyn, we are freezing in Virginia too! It sends me into a mood and my escape is a perfumed bath! Thank you for the note listings on these fragrances. Although Jaipur Chai and Mezcal Anejo sound warm, you peaked my attention with BLYSS, which is what I want right now.

Steven’s complete descriptions of each fragrance always helps me choose and he solidified my choice. BLYSS is for me.

Thanks for the giveaway opportunity! In the USA.

  • It’s always good to hear both Michelyn and Steven on their perspectives on different perfumes. Michelyn’s introductions had interesting details on the perfumers and I learned about the differences between Mezcal and Tequila. Steven provided nice practical details on the perfumes. I am a Redolessence subscriber – I didn’t know he is also a teacher!! While all three perfumes seem fabulous, and I am torn between Mezcal Anejo and Ineke Jaipur Chai, I will go with Mezcal Anejo, were I to win this draw. A Thanks for the reviews and draws. From USA.

  • Very festive fragrances! I appreciate the focus on warm, sunny days in the selection of scents. Like most of the US, I’m in the deep, wet freeze currently and am dreaming of summer weather. All three sound amazing nut I’m gravitating towards Mezcal Anejo for the smoked amber note. The Jaipur Chai and BLYSS sound amazing as well and I wouldn’t say no to either. MD,USA.

  • Michelyn & Steven!!! ❤️❤️❤️ Love this collection of fragrances! We’ve been big fans of Perfumology for a long time (Clutch is a favorite) and would Love to experience BLYSS! What a romantic inspiration! Michelyn, I’m especially excited to hear it calls to mind Chateau d’Yquem! Another house favorite! ❤️ Kelly + Jones is such a cool house (that we are really enjoying getting to know)! Ineke also sounds lovely!
Such a fabulous lineup! Thank you for this wonderful opportunity! Steven’s expert descriptions & note break-downs are always great! ❤️ USA

  • wallygator88 says:

Thanks for the nice writeups Steven and Michelyn.

I’m a huge fan of the talent that Ineke Ruhland showcases in her fragrances. I’ve had a chance to sample Jaipur Chai and it really is a beautiful fragrance – a delicate gourmand, with the spices just pushing it to the point of being a non gourmand, with a wonderful creamy milky rosiness that I love in the cold weather. Actually, the scent really works well in warm weather as well.

What Michelyn mentions about the ginger is quite true. It holds a kind of zestiness and freshness that reminds me of masala chai.

I would love to win a bottle of Jaipur Chai.

    Cheers from WI, USA

  • Both you and Steven described Jaipur Chai so beautifully, making me want it right now! Michelyn, your description of it as the perfect scent to spritz during a blustery, freezing night when the lights are flickering and icy snow is piling on top of the window panes was exactly the weather we were having here in northern PA this week. If I’m chosen as a winner, I would most definitely pick Jaipur Chai!

    I live in the USA.

    Merry Christmas to you all!

  • Thanks for the list and the lovely introduction. This has indeed been an unusual holiday season—it’s frigid here and some of our holiday plans were rescheduled due to illness—so I’m also enjoying some warming, sweeter fragrances to get in a festive mindset. I’ll wear my sample of INeKE Jaipur Chai this week.

I haven’t tried the other two fragrances here, but I’m intrigued by the entire Kelly + Jones MEZCAL lineup, and specifically the smoked amber note in Mezcal Anejo. Pefumology BLYSS sounds a little too sweet and fruity for me, but I liked reading about Sauternes. I’m hopelessly uninformed about wine.

I also enjoyed Steven’s video. Steven mentioned that amber reminds him of colder weather around the holiday season, and I’ve been reaching for amber fragrances lately for the same reason. I also liked his breakdown of Jaipur Chai; it hadn’t struck me as a holiday scent before now, but it absolutely fits the season.

I’m in the midwest, USA. Should I win, I’d love the Kelly+ Jones 50 ml MEZCAL AÑEJO. Thanks, and Happy Holidays!

  • Michael Prince says:

I loved Michelyn’s Intro/written review and Steven’s video reviews on Ineke Jaipur Chai which Steven describes are the perfect Chai Tea wearing experience with tea a variety of warm and aromatic spices, a lactonic quality of steamed milk, and vanilla which sounds very intriguing and truly divine. Kelly + Jones Mezcal Anejo which Steven states reminds him of Dulce Diablo which I love. Michelyn describes the Mexican Blue Agave Tequila the fleshy peach as well as the spicy and smoky leather notes that transports perfumer Kelly Jones to Mexico City where she spent many years working for Toyota. It’s truly sad what Michelyn said in the intro about the Tri Demic and weather conditions that have really put a damper on the holiday season this year. These 3 fragrances can definitely put me in the holiday spirit. I am from the USA. If I win I would choose Ineke Jaipur Chai.

  • It says I commented but it is not showing my comment – to summarize , the MEZCAL ANEJO please!! The Smokey amber sounds ethereal and will suit my cocktail parties! Pittsburgh, PA for shipping

  • The promise of a not-Starbucks-chai and maybe-coquito-esque perfume sold me on Jaipur Chai! Sounds delicious and perfectly seasonal. I hope everyone has stayed warm this holiday.

  • Regis Monkton says:

I hope to win a bottle of INeKe “Jaipur Chai” for multiple reasons, e.g. Michelyn’s description of it made it seem very enjoyable to the extent that I feel like I have to try it. Also, I believe Steven when he says that “Jaipur Chai” is incredible. He also caused me to feel like I have to try that fragrance. I can like tea-based fragrances, especially a spicy one like “Jaipur Chai”. I live in the U.S.A. I live in MD, and we just got done experiencing something like being one with the Arctic, but it wasn’t as bad as what Buffalo, NY just experienced.

  • Great article! I thought Michelyn’s written intro/review of the three Festive Fragrances you should be wearing was very informative. I especially like learning that a portion of every sale of MEZCAL AÑEJO goes to a charity helping to rebuild in the earthquake-affected rural areas with sustainable architecture and natural materials. what a great cause! I thought Steven’s vide0 review was so descriptive with how he elaborated the smoky gourmand and peachy aspects of AÑEJO which was not what I was expecting from a mezcal fragrance! I live in the US. My choice should I win would be Jaipur Chai.
