When I drop four cubes of ice

Chimingly in a glass, and add

Three goes of Gin, a lemon slice,

And let a ten-ounce tonic void

In foaming gulps until it smothers

Everything else up to the edge. – Philp Larkin, “Sympathy in White Major”

It’s one of those rare summer days when the sun is at its height, a friendly breeze whispers cool across your skin at just the right moments, and something blue and sparkling – a pool, the edge of an ocean – glitters in the in the distance as your eyes half close against the brightness. The lawn chair feels like it was always waiting for you to sink into, faraway laughter occasionally punctuates the still, and no manmade intruders like lawnmowers or car engines break the mood. You reach for a tumbler resting on the small table next to you and your fingers close on its cool sweat. As you lift the glass, there’s aromatic herbs, a crystal splash of Sapphire and a tang of lemon fizz. Now imagine that feeling bottled in a fragrance, and you’ve got Frapin L’Humaniste.

L’Humaniste, created by Robertet perfumer Sidonie Lancesseur, pours a classic cocktail of upscale men’s cologne and vintage gin, expertly mixes it with pinches of spice and bitters, and pours it nice and easy on the rocks. This classically summery fragrance feels as though it meant to be splashed rather than sprayed, and I would bet my imaginary baccarat winnings that it would smell and feel delicious after a stint in the ice bucket.

Pantagruel visits the Oracle of the Holy Bottle by Albert Robida, 1902

L’Humaniste – whose name and central gin accord allude to Pantagruel’s search for the “Oracle of the Holy Bottle’ in Gargantua and Pantagruel by Rabelais – starts off with a zippy, zesty spritz of bergamot and lemon spiked with black pepper. It’s not as acerbic as you might imagine; some gently dusty cardamom filters in just behind and softens the sharpness of the citrus and pungent spice, while a distinctly flowery note – peony, I imagine – lends a subtle roundedness. But then comes the central gin accord. Some frigid, mentholic juniper slaps up against the lemon and it’s G&T’s all around. This is where L’Humaniste is at its sparkling best, as jaunty as a straw panama hat worn just so.

Katherine Hepburn in Pat and Mike, 1952

Katherine Hepburn in Pat and Mike, 1952

In its early stages, L’Humaniste leans masculine and is reminiscent of a high-end men’s vintage cologne a la Monsieur Balmain or Mäurer & Wirtz 4711. While L’Humaniste keeps its suave edge throughout its wearing, it gradually softens up a bit in the middle, when coumarin adds some grassy, hay-like sweetness and tonka bean offers up a touch of nutty sweetness. The fragrance rounds off with some oakmoss underscoring the fragrance’s herbal aspects and woods. Overall, it’s less floral than Lubin’s lovely Gin Fizz and less musky than Art et Parfum’s Gin & Tonic, favouring instead a devil-may-care refinement by leaning into the lemon, juniper and thyme. With its herbal edge and timeless insouciance, I could quite imagine Katherine Hepburn’s golf pro Pat Pemberton sporting this quite happily while she takes swings at Spencer Tracy’s Mike Conovan.

Effervescent, fun to wear, and just the right combination of uncomplicated and classy, Frapin L’Humaniste is a summer cocktail for skin. Make mine a large.

Notes: Lemon oil, bergamot oil, cardamom, pink berries, black pepper, juniper berries, nutmeg, thyme, peony, gin, oak moss, tonka bean.

  • Interesting review! Do not remember this perfume.
Citrus, juniper, hey notes sounds beautiful and fresh.

  • Never tried Frapin perfumes. From Lauryn’s review, Frapin L’Humaniste seems to be a laid back, relaxed perfume, perfect for virtual summer vacations, or real ones, if one can manage some, with all the rules and regulations of mask-wearing, physical distancing, quarantining, and so on. The first paragraph created a lovely image of a soothing vacation, and I got lost in my fantasy world reading it. Frapin L’Humaniste seems nice and happy – perfect after this crazy last year. Thanks for the review and draw. I’m in USA.

Sounds so perfect for summer! I love a crisp, “I’ll be with you in a moment” scent and this checks the boxes. Totally different from my beloved Frapin 1270, that cozy urchin. Congratulations to Lauryn! I live on the USA.

  • Congratulations, Lauryn, on your nomination! My Perfume River is a beautiful piece of writing.

  • My personal favourite from Frapin! Although I was recently able to acquire a decant of 1270 and am really enjoying it too. Absolutely agree with Lauryn’s reference to 4711, as well as the herbal edge (a love pour moi) during the dive into the G&T heart. An extraordinarly well balanced and refreshing cocktail for the summer months. Unfortunately, I went through my decant years ago, but it’s one of those frags that I recall applying in LIBERAL amounts. At the time I wasn’t a huge fan of florals, but L’humaniste and AdP’s Colonia Essenza really turned the page for me. It would be wonderful to experience that zestiness again, as well as keeping a nose out for that “hay-like” sweetness that Lauryn mentions. I always thought it was the ‘oakmoss’ that gave it that vibe but I certainly still have a great deal to learn! A wonderful description overall. MI, USA

  • Summer on skin and gin?
Count me in! Congratulations on your finalist. Hope you win
Frapin 1270 is the only one I know but I would love Humaniste

  • Congratulations Lauryn on being a finalist! L’Humaniste sounds very refreshing and perfect for warmer weather. I’ve never tasted a gin and tonic, but certainly would love to enjoy the juniper berries and gin notes in this fragrance. Thanks for the opportunity! Mich USA

  • Dubaiscents says:

Effervescent and fun to wear? Of course I need this for the summer! What a lovely review, it makes me long for summer days at the beach sipping gin and tonics after a day in the sun. My favorite Frapin is Orchid Man but I haven’t tried this one yet. Thanks for the draw. US

  • Frapin L’Humaniste is the most refreshing composition from the original line of the brand and it is no surprised as the composition has been inspired by gin. I have some from Frapin including their very first releases in the 50ml circular bottles. I am in US

  • I love classic colognes and G&Ts, so this sounds wonderful. I don’t have a favorite Frapin fragrance…yet. I’m in Oklahoma, USA. Thanks for the draw!

  • The second I saw the bottle of Bombay I knew I had to have this, the description of a summer drink in a bottle. This sounds amazing and Frapin never disappoints. I still love 1270.

  • What doesn’t appeal? The whole thing sounds perfectly refreshing as we wait in anticipation for the upcoming summer swelter! I might have to keep mine in an ice bucket as suggested! In the USA. Thanks for the chance to win.

Love the house and this sounds eight up my alley , would love to get my hand on this one . New york , usa .

  • After having read from this review, and according to the list of notes, this fragrance seems like it could be aromatic in a high-quality way. From what I understand, there are plenty of gin-centric fragrances and I haven’t tried any of them yet; this fragrance might be a good way for me to begin enjoying them. I haven’t tried anything yet from Frapin. I live in MD., U.S.A.

  • GennyLeigh says:

I’ve tried a few gin and tonic type fragrances and I quite like them for summer. L’Humaniste sounds fun. I like the diction of the cardamom and peony for a sweet and spicy twist. The lemon, bergamot and pepper give it that bracing quality. Would love to try it! Commenting from MD, USA.

  • Gin & Tonic Drizzled Cake and cupcakes are one of my most desirable, and sold birthday cakes. Yesterday I made two cakes, and 60 cupcakes for one of my regular customers fiftieth birthday.
L’Humaniste reminds me of the cake. I don’t know it , but one other Frapin I do. 1697 smells like Spiced Rum Fruit Cake , candied rose is also present.
Appreciate Lauryn review, and the giveaway campaign

Nice to read in depth about a fragrance I already am fond of but had thought was discontinued as were other Frapin fragrances I really loved. My favorite is 1270 and this review will cause me to reach for it sooner than later! In the US

  • ScentitarFragrance says:

The Idea of bitter and cold gin in a fragrance is beautiful ! Spicy and Boozy fragrances are intoxicating and the use of peony and tonka bean sound interesting ! I Enjoyed Isle of Man, but need to try this one and more of Frapin ! USA, MS

Excellent description, L’Humaniste has one of the best openings for a hot weather fragrance. It’s classy , fresh , a bit sweet from the tonka bean and more intimate.

“is reminiscent of a high-end men’s vintage cologne a la Monsieur Balmain or Mäurer & Wirtz 4711”

Not to me , both comparisons I don’t get, especially the 4711 . The other two fragrances Lauryn mentioned i don’t know, so I can’t share my own thoughts.
If I have to rate my favorite Frapin fragrances:
    1. 1270
    2. 1697
    3. L’Humaniste
    All @cafleurebon @elledebee @p.frapin @kintessence_nyc i already follow, thanks

  • Frapin I first heard on Mr. Yara YouTube channel, he mentioned L’Humaniste a couple of times in his best warm weather fragrances videos.
Zingy, spicy fragrance with cardamom and jin , L’Humaniste checks all the boxes.
Thanks Kintessance , Lauryn and Cafleurebon for the chance

What appeals to me about  L’Humaniste based on Lauryn’s review is that is sounds like the perfect summer fragrance. It has all of the qualities that are beautifully described by Lauryn with a bright and fresh citrus and a gin and tonic accord with a bright and sparkling quality to it. My favorite Frapin fragrance is 1270. I am from Ohio, USA.

  • This is a beauty. Great for hot weather. Great scent but sadly doesn’t last long on skin. Would like the chance to win a bottle. Thanks, Ca

  • Thank you Lauryn for the review and Kintessence for the kind giveaway. I was intrigued by your description of L’Humaniste leaning masculine early on then softening up a bit in the middle which just has to be a winning formula. I am yet to try any Frapin fragrances but L’Humaniste sounds like it would be a lovely start. I’m in USA

  • IvanVelikov says:

L’Humaniste i have smelled long time ago , at least 7-8 years back, and the way Lauryn described it, is exactly how I remember it.
Indeed it is fresh , and fun to wear mix of citrus, spices and lots of gin.
    Thanks for the giveaway

  • I loved Lauryns descriptor of this having a devil-may-care refinement and the comparisons to golf which is indeed complicated and makes you feel classy lol. I would love to win this fragrance and it sounds like it would be a great mood lifter for the season!

  • Bryant Worley says:

I’ve had one fragrance (to my recollection) that was fizzy and effervescent. So, after Lauryn broke down the notes/phases of the fragrance, this statement makes me want this: “EFFERVESCENT, fun to wear, and just the right combination of uncomplicated and classy, Frapin L’Humaniste is a summer cocktail for skin.”

I have yet to try a Frapin (so, no favorite), but this article just reminded me that I have to get my hands on nice size samples of “Nevermore” and “If” (in that order).

I live in Waldorf, MD, USA.

  • Frapin the alcohol beverage brand, and Frapin the fragrance brand are one , and the same , right? No wonder there’s a gin in L’Humaniste. Sparkling, fresh, with a hint of sweetness, I’m no doubt attracted by the it.
I’m not familiar with Frapin fragrances.
    Thanks for the draw

  • KMBfragrance says:

I love gin and tonic, and perhaps not surprisingly juniper in fragrance. This sounds like the perfect refreshing summer scent. I haven’t tried any Frapin fragrances.’

  • Most appealing to me is the intoxicating description of the notes in Frapin’s creation. I do not yet have a favorite from the house but would love to get my nose on this one. Thanks for the opportunity. KY, USA

  • Congrats Lauryn on being Perfumed Plume Finalist
Frapin I’m well aware of, mostly because of the gorgeous cognac, I’m a huge fan of, and of course the fragrances.
L’Humaniste is awesome, versatile, bitter and slightly herbal. Gin is present, but It’s not a boozy fragrance.
L’Humaniste and 1270 to me are equally as good.
“Frapin L’Humaniste is a summer cocktail for skin. Make mine a large”
Cheers Lauryn, with gin and tonic , or with my favorite Frapin Extra Grande Champagne Cognac 😉
    VA

  • L’Humaniste a perfect example how well dressed, groomed , well taken confident gentleman should smell in the summer. I know every modern woman could easily wear it , still I believe Lauryn was right saying it leans masculine.
Yes I do have a favorite Frapin fragrance , it’s called Speakeasy .
Hard work pays off , i’m happy for you Lauryn
    Exciting giveaway, USA
