Why am I so drawn to Filippo Sorcinelli’s body of work, perhaps because I am drawn to him as a fellow, one who walks along the path of life to a rhythm I know.

His creations are always able to elicit in me, deep responses, emotions captured in their pure state. It is the mark of a true artist, one whose creations rise from deep within without falsehoods or pretenses, drawn effortlessly from his very nature.  A humbleness of genius sits comfortably around his shoulders, each new release playing me like an instrument, plucking and fine tuning my senses and emotions. In a world such as ours at present, it is important, he exists.

Blade Runner Rutger Hauer Tears in the Rain

Rutger Hauer iconic scene in Blade Runner, 1982 via IMDb

‘Like Tears in the Rain’, so many of us must recall that final scene in the original and now classic Ridley Scott film, Bladerunner, atmospheric and poignant it was a monologue played by actor Rutger Hauer, a defining moment where we were suspended, captured by the imagery of a brutal and dark industrial landscape suddenly transformed by the poetic utterings of a rogue replicant, rivulets of rain, moments of silent reverence and a soupcon of humanity, cradling a bird to his chest amid fierce downpours.

Residing here is the essence Filippo Sorcinelli Pioggia Moderata part of the Atmosphere d’Emotion collection, urban and industrial places transformed by the simplest yet most precious of natural phenomena, a storm of rain, the harshness and detritus momentarily gifted a clean slight of tenderness. A thousand faces on a thousand streets, glances lowered and with hunched shoulders, singular in the crowds, momentarily diverted and stilled. Pioggia Moderata is a burst of freshness with its bergamot splash paired with iris and salinity upon asphalt streets, just as the rain has passed, a washing clean that gifts-tired streets a rejuvenation. The frenetic humans scurrying to-and-fro in urban velocity are forced to stop, to shelter a moment and inhale a blessed relief, raising sight to the skies.

How that scent of newly fallen rain on dusty and fetid streets offers up to us a joy, it is the ozonic properties that caress us so in this proximity to water, that rising scent of petrichor during a working day, we are gifted a pause riven with reminiscences, this beneficence is a reset to tumble once again into childhood, to play in puddles, our faces mirrored up from the hard surface, streetlights reflected, splashing in our innocence. An intense emotion overtakes me in company of doused herbal notes saturated with freshly blessed myrtle and thyme, seasoned with spices and a softly wafting jasmine. A tough, hot day in the city has become something tender, nature has stepped into the arena carrying off the residues of decay smeared on dusty windowpanes, stone, carved centuries ago indrawing breath.  A collective sigh.

After the storm subsides, Piogga Moderata acquires a gentle resonance, a symphony of warmth pervades, graced with woods, earthy notes and musk’s, as if nature reigns in the heart of the metropolis enveloping all life within.

The dense dust of pollution erased, the world weary revived, human life altered with simple rain, edifices with renewed eyes, colour has been rendered upon greyness and dull appearance. The edges of urban life gently coaxed back to nature and the emotion we feel in contact with it.  I am cocooned and reassured as the patchouli, present is gilded with a creamy sandalwood, there is a renewed elegance in its wearing. Bought back to ourselves, jolted out of apathy and the day has a returned confidence. Never forget to dance and play in the rain; wash your wearied soul with Pioggia Moderata.

Notes: Bergamot, Iris, Marine Notes, Myrtle, Nutmeg, Jasmine, Cloves, Precious Woods, Earthy Notes, Musks, Thyme, Fava Tonka, Labdanus, Patchouli, Sandalwood.

My bottle of Pioggia Moderata was gifted to me by Filippo, my gracious thanks and high regard. My words are my own.

  • I have never tried any of his fragrances but this one sounds interesting. I love that smell during and after the rain. Especially when it’s rained on stone or concrete. I love the mix of patchouli and sandalwood. New Jersey, USA

  • olgAPOISON says:

Love the whole futuristic vibe and feelings it provoked in me.
I have never tried his scents. Im from EU. Ofc Ive seen BR

Hello! OMG when I saw Filippo Sorcinelli giveaway, i just couldn’t pass it!
I remember first learning about this brand in one of the perfume charts. Somebody was showing their perfume collection and the most appreciated perfumes. And there was it, Tu Es Petrus… I remember directly going to the website to check this brand that i hadn’t heard of before. The design of the bottles embodies that very true artisanal attitude that, say, luxe is missing so badly nowadays… The compositions are not for untrained noses, indeed (I’ve tried very few, only the rain collection). One should be prepared to be introduced to the Sorcinelli world. Amazing approach to perfumery. Thank you for that!
And no, i haven’t seen the movie)).
    I live in Switzerland.
    Thank you!

  • Danu’s potrayal of this fragrance was truly beautiful. The idea of the hard city scape lifting and rays of warmth slowly creeping in just sounds so enticing. The scent of petrichor can often be relaxing and perhaps even a bit somber to me, but in the right context, it can also be quite uplifting. It is this uplifting side that I believe Filippo Sorcinelli is tyring to bring out in this fragrance. From what I’m reading here, it seems as if he has managed to harness that element and construct a unique and intriguing fragrance around it. I had not heard of his house before reading this, but I will certainly be looking into them now. I live in NC, USA.

  • How much unique this perfume is strikes me and the notes also sound outstanding. I never tried any Filippo Sorcinelli fragrances and I also never seen Blade Runner. I live in Trzebnica, Poland, EU.

  • ashrabel01@gmail.com says:

Never had any of these fragrances from Filippo Sorcinelli. Pioggia sounds so amazing with the description written. Petrichor is a very fond memory to me when I lived in TN and watched storms roll in. I have only seen pieces of Bladerunner, but not the whole movie. If it’s mentioned here, maybe I should see it! Thank you for the drawing!

  • Oh this perfume sounds absolutely lovely. This review made me think of summer rains in New Orleans and I’ve really been enjoying fragrances with interesting use of marine notes lately. I haven’t yet tried any of his work but I know and love Blade Runner. I live in Missouri, USA

  • I have seen Bladerunner 1 & 2049. I imagine the smell the place would be heavy with garbage and not too pleasant but at least the rain would wash it away. Not tried any Filippo Sorcinelli fragrances but will look out for them. One of my favourite smells is hot streets and melting tarmac so the idea of a scent that evokes a hot day in the city sounds very appealing. I’m in the UK

  • I enjoyed reading Danu’s review of Filippo Sorcinelli Pioggia Moderata, especially the part where it talks about how nature shows its effects in the form of rain in a typical city with its pollution, dusty, asphalt roads and how this rain provides a much needed relief to tired city dwellers. The smells of first rain, petrichor, takes one back to the carefree days of childhood. Filippo Sorcinelli Pioggia Moderata seems to be a very refreshing, deeply felt perfume, and I would love to try it. It invokes a sense of freedom and rest. Unfortunately I haven’t tried anything by this brand, yet. Haven’t seen Blade Runner, but may see now. Danu’s description of Filippo Sorcinelli’s work reminded me of music by Japanese artist Kitaro, whose work also evokes deep emotions, as it is created from a reservoir of deeply felt emotions. Thanks for the review and draw. From continental United States.

  • I’ve note tried any Sorcinelli fragrances yet, but this sounds absolutely intriguing. Blade Runner is one of my all-time favorite films, and I’m a sucker for petrichor–can’t wait to try it. In the USA

  • Wow, cool bottle! I also love that this perfume evokes a hot, dirty city during a rain storm: a moment of grace. I have not tried any fragrances by Filippo Sorcinelli, but I have certainly seen (and loved!) Bladerunner.
    I’m in WV, USA

  • I was struck right away by the line, “splash paired with iris and salinity upon asphalt streets…”. I haven’t tried one from this house so far. Yes I’ve seen Blade Runner but don’t remember it. I can’t say I’m happy about that. US

  • Jasmine, Cloves, Precious Woods, Earthy Notes, Musks, Thyme, Fava Tonka, Labdanus, Patchouli, Sandalwood. I am intrigued by the notes especially Patchouli and Sandalwood. I am a big fan of Blade Runner and this fragrance sounds like something right up my street. A house that I have got no experience with with but I am intrigued by nonetheless. Thanks a million from the UK

  • cocooned and reassured as the patchouli, present is gilded with a creamy sandalwood, there is a renewed elegance in its wearing. Bought back to ourselves, jolted out of apathy and the day has a returned confidence. Never forget to dance and play in the rain; wash your wearied soul with Pioggia Moderata. A beautiful description by Danu really fascinated how this would smell like on skin sounds like a magical concoction. I am afraid I have not seen Blade Runner but this fragrance has piqued my interest especially petrichor smell after the rain. Thanks a lot from the UK

  • banjarmasin says:

I’ve only tried LAVS, and it is a magnificent incense. I find the bottle of Pioggia Moderata quite striking.

  • I like the notes behind this one and also the concept of it. The overall vibe I am getting from this perfume is nostalgia and an invitation to meditation. Thank you

  • Gnossiennes says:

Thank you, Danu, for this interesting review.
The evolution of Pioggia Moderata from the storm to the warmth sounds very promising. And also, alas, that cute falcon!

  • LovelyMouse says:

What strikes me about Pioggia Moderata is that Filippo Sorcinelli managed to convey the scent of rain, petrichor, and combine it with the urbanity of the city to which the perfume is dedicated — Milano. This is very interesting, but there is hardly a person who does not like the smell of petrichor – a specific aroma after rain. After all, since ancient times, a person inherited a love for the smell of rain from their ancestors, for whom rainy weather was important for survival. Filippo Sorcinelli is a true artist, creator. I like many of his works, especially LAVS, But not today and Io Non Ho Mani Che Mi Accarezzino il Volto. I watched Blade Runner, “Human or Replicant?” — Of course human!

  • I was won over by the Blade Runner reference and Danu’s review makes me very curious about Pioggia Moderata, as I have never tried any of Filippo Sorcinelli’s perfumes.
There was always something that intrigued me in the smell of rain over urban landscape and this one seems to capture this very well. I also love the bottle, goes very well with the description of this atmospheric perfume. All that said, I would be happy to own this,
Thank you, I am from EU.

  • katyakotovskaya says:

One of my favorite things, when I visit a new city, is walking its streets on a slightly rainy day. The freshness in the air, the coziness of wet concrete, the vibrant earthy smell, I love it all. So my expectations for Pioggia Moderata are somewhat really high (Bladerunner reference pitched in), and I’m gonna look out for this fragrance, as well as for the other Filippo Sorcinelli’s creations. I live in EU

  • One of my favs from Filippo Sorcinelli is Reliqvia. I enjoy his creativity. His bottles are amazing, and the perfume is certainly unique. Rain brings life to my garden and Pioggia Moderata sounds like the perfect fragrance to sniff after a downpour. Thanks for another awesome review and draw. Mich USA

  • Bergamot splash, iris and newly fallen rain sound great. I own Lavs which is my favourite scent from the brand. I have seen two Blade Runner movies as I am a sci-fi fan. Greetings from EU.

  • Steve Fernandez says:

What strikes me is the ability to capture that after the rainfall scent in a bottle. The patchouli and sandalwood combo sounds real nice.

No, I haven’t tried any fragrances by Filippo Sorcinelli. I’ve seen bits and pieces of Bladerunner.

  • recursivemask says:

The smell of rain is one of my favorite scents, and to have it featured in such a lush environment sounds amazing. I have not tried any of his fragrances. US.

  • Wishing to try a Filippo Sorcinelli perfume since this review reflects that it is the work of an artist, made from the heart that manages to recreate the wonderful atmosphere of a rainy day over the city, that wonderful smell of wet earth that evokes a feeling of renewal, of cleanliness, which must be spectacular.

Of course I’ve seen Blade Runner and the parallelism already seems great to me.

I haven’t had the pleasure of trying other Filippo Sorcinelli perfumes, I’m looking forward to it.

  • I am absolutely in love with Filippo Sorcinelli’s concepts, inspiration and, not lastly, bottles. Look at that beauty! I love how they all follow a certain theme and look and are variations of it.
Pioggia Moderata also seems to be a fascinating blend of grass and concrete, rural and urban, natural and manmade. I love the idea of a fusion of the two worlds, as something that speaks both to the modern-day human and to the free spirit that lives inside each of us.
    The notes sound absolutely wondrous.
I live in the EU and I’m actually not ashamed to say I haven’t seen Blade Runner, lol. I know it’s a classic, but I have slightly different tastes when it comes to cinematography.
    Thanks for the draw!

  • Thanks for the review Danu. I hope to read many more article from yourselves as I’ve enjoyed this very much!

Emotion and Fragrance go hand-in-hand for me. I love finding fragrances that bring back memories and wearing fragrances that mark special moments in my life.

As an outdoor person, fresh fragrances are amongst my favourites and your description of a burst of freshness with bergamot splash paired with iris sounds absolutely incredible.
My Iris fragrances are often thicker, and better suited for cold weather where Pioggia Moderata sounds suitable any time of the year!

I have never tried a Filippo Sorcinelli fragrance, but I am intrigued and look forward to wearing his creations.

    Greetings from the UK!

  • It’s always interesting to see how perfumers interpret the ‘rain on a city street’ motif. Filippo Sorcinelli seems to have been successful tapping into the ozone and petrichor but still relaxing us with herbs, jasmine and patchouli. It seems masterfully composed. I have never tried any Filippo Sorcinelli fragrances but I have seen Bladerunner and always thought Rutger Hauer had the most mesmerizing blue eyes. MD, USA.

  • Oh boy, I am a huge lover of both Blade Runner and fragrances and Filippo Sorcinelli seems something really outstanding. I would love to try Pioggia Moderata. Danu made a great job here and made me want to know this fragrance.
The Atmosphere d’Emotion collection from Filippo Sorcinelli offers an olfactory journey through urban and industrial places transformed by the simplest yet most precious of natural phenomena: rain. Pioggia Moderata, part of this collection, captures the essence of a gentle rain shower, which brings a momentary clean and tender relief to the harshness and detritus of city life.
I love that the fragrance opens with a burst of freshness, featuring bergamot and salinity, evoking the scent of newly fallen rain on asphalt streets.

  • The title here drew me immediately. I actually gave a sort of geeky gasp of recognition and rushed to read! The pairing of emotions and scent is a scientific proven, so actively attempting to elicit certain emotions through scent is a logical extension to my mind. To most, I think! I haven’t yet tried any Sorcinelli fragrances. I live in the US.

  • I’ve seen and watched both the original and the newer blade runner and really enjoyed them despite being confusing at times, especially the aesthetics within the movie. What really strikes me about Pioggia Moderata is the inspiration behind it and how it’s similar to rain and the smells that develop from it. From TX, USA.

  • I love the smell of the rain and watery, ozonic elements. I don’t get the wig cap, but that’s interesting, I guess.
I have smelled Lavs and I love it!
Thanks, I am in the EU.

  • I love the imagery that Danu evoked in their review. Spring can be such a melancholy time, and it really captured the solemn beauty of that, and also of that scene in Blade Runner, which is really seared in my memory. Plus I love the notes of jasmine and petrichor. I’ve only tried Lavs but I’d love to have a chance to try Pioggia Moderata too! I’m in MN, USA.

  • First off, Welcome back Danu! It is enlightening to read your words here again. I have not as of yet had the privilege of experiencing any of Filippo Sorcinelli’s fragrances. After reading the intro this makes me wonder why. I love people who are genuine and add value by their very existence in our world.
I love the rain and the cleansing that it brings to our surroundings, and our souls. Pioggia Moderata sounds like the perfect scent to accomplish this for me as I happen to live in the Southwest desert where every drop is a precious addition to life. I am in the USA

  • What a blend of notes!! I love seeing cool watery Iris blends but this has an aromatic and petrichor touch too, with a warm nutmeg… it’s really something totally unique. I have not tried this but certainly would love to!
Thank you for the opportunity. In US

  • Filippo Sorcinelli is not just a perfume master. He is a complete artist, with a seductive imagination. His attention for details, his imagination that really surpasses reality, his way of living every day, his creativity are all si obvious in the work and passion he puts in every project and perfume. I think my favorite Sorcinelli in Unum, for the smell, and But Not Today for the bottle. i live in CA, US

  • I’m usually not really intrigued by a fragrance simply by reading its notes. What always strikes me about a perfume instead is its ability to tell a story, to evolve through time and space, taking you to different places. So this Pioggia Moderata sounds terrific when narrates of a rain pouring on a dry and smoggy city. And then of the sun, peeking out of the clouds and warming out the streets and maybe the people that forgot the umbrella.
I’ve never tried any Filippo Sorcinelli fragrance, but these from the Atmosphere d’Emotion collection look really interesting!
And I LOVE Blade Runner, with its amazing dark settings and musics! I live in Italy

  • wandering_nose says:

Danu has managed to strike the deep cords inside my soul… I was reminded of the humbling experience of being rained on in front of Milano’s Duomo, feeling so small amongst the crowd of busy tourists, visitors and passers-by. The unique smell of petrichor has always fascinated me, it feels to me as if the earth cries for some relief from dirt or heat, and the skies listen and release some refreshing and reviving water from above. I love Danu’s final sentiment “Never forget to dance and play in the rain; wash your wearied soul with Pioggia Moderata”. The notes are just amazing, I would be honored to try Pioggia Moderata. I have unfortunately not had the opportunity to try Filippo Sorcinelli’s creations but the house sounds beyond worthy of attention. Blade Runner I have yet to see too – I have just been convinced. Thank you for the draw, I am in EU

  • emorandeira says:

Iris is my Favourite note in perfumery. This is the first readson why Pioggia Moderata IS very attractive to me. In addition I am looking forward to trying the Filippo Sorcinelli collection from a long time. I have only tried Contrebombarde 32 and It is one of the Best incense based perfumes that I have ever tried. The collection that for me is more appealing IS the XSé collection!
I should be the Only perdón in the world which has not seen Blade runner, even the new versión!

  • Nom de Guerre says:

I love atmospheric fragrances, this sounds like it could be similar to Serpentine by CdG. That one is lovely as well. The note breakdown sounds lovely. I’ve sampled Lavs, Opus 114 and Io non ho mani che mi accarezzino il volto – all three are on my wishlist. Greetings from Riga, Latvia!

  • I never get tired of reading about new perfumes and houses… How a smell can transport us to different places… The way this fragrance is described is amazing! I would love to try it!!!! I’m from Massachusetts, US.

  • Beautiful review, Danu! Petrichor scents are really compelling and I’ve only tried a few that captured the smell of rain in the city—wet asphalt, kicked up dust, drenched flower beds, and damp air. It sounds like Pioggia Moderata builds on that idea with a more complex and abstract palette that seems lovely to wear.

I’m in the USA. I haven’t tried any Filippo Sorcinelli fragrances, but I love Blade Runner (ideally, the final cut). Thanks for the giveaway!

  • Moderate rain is a great name for a perfume that evokes so many emotions! Moderate rain is one of the most boring weathers- it goes on and on and locks us inside and leaves us to out deepest thoughts, its the weather for contemplation. And the bottle is great!

  • Outstanding review but what strikes you about Pioggia Moderata is that its has a Marine notes yet it has warmth, along with earthy and musk notes. Fascinating. Also I’ve seen Blade Runner and consider it a masterpiece. I haven’t tried any of Filippo Sorcinelli’s fragrances but would love to in the near future. Thanks for the giveaway. Greetings from US.

  • Regis Monkton says:

I’m very interested in trying “Pioggia Moderata”. I haven’t tried anything yet from Filippo Sorcinelli. One of my favorite fragrances includes thyme (i.e. Milano Fragranze “Basilica”) and I’d like to see how it’s used in this one. I’m interested to see what the iris and the petrichor are like in this niche fragrance. Also, I’m interested in seeing what the freshness in the beginning is like. I live in the U.S.A.

  • foreverscents says:

I love the small of rain as it washes away the dust and detritus of the city. I am a city person and always love an afternoon rainstorm. It is interesting indeed to imagine the notes that Filippo Sorcinelli used to create the cocooning effect of rain. I haven’t tried any of the fragrances from this house.
    I haven’t seen Bladerunner.
    I live in the USA.

  • wallygator88 says:

Thanks for the great writeup Dana.

I think I’m taken by how moody this fragrance is, not in a bad way, but rather how my mood tends to shift through the course of experiencing a rainy day – melancholy at being grey and wet, joy and gratitfde at the smell of petrichor and depending on the day, a sense of refreshment or coziness.

Then notes in this are fascinating and I would love to get a chance to smell it.

I have not had a chance to try Filippo Sorcinelli fragrances before.

    Cheers from WI, USA

  • sephrenia300 says:

Very nice review! What strikes me about Pioggia Moderata is the idea of a fragrance inspired by urban and industrial places transformed by nature, by a cleansing and rejuvenating rain. That contrast and juxtaposition sound so romantic and poetic. Very appealing! I have not tried any Filippo Sorcinelli fragrances and I have not seen Blade Runner. I live in the US.
