Filippo Sorcinelli but_not_today Review + Silence of the Lambs Draw

Filippo Sorcinelli and Danu Seith-Fyr, Straf Bar, Milan 2018.

In deep friendship that moves beyond the mere boundaries of words, I have a connection with Filippo Sorcinelli and his company which is beyond professional and stretches into a territory that is paradoxical in quality, oscillating in the rare atmosphere between unknown yet deeply known. There are a few, in this world so saturated with new releases and marketing briefs that reach me at my core and leave their imprint as fiercely, or as tenderly than Filippo.  Akin to his touch on fabric as the Atelier to The Pope, and the fingertips that grace the organ keys of the great Cathedrals and Basilicas of the world, his fragrances intrigue and invite, challenge and traverse perceptions.

Unique and unexpected yet expected at the same time.  I had first smelt the preview of  but_not_today in Milan, April 2018 at Unum Apart, Straf Bar. Filippos work is indelibly etched upon me, in a way that but_not_today is a quintessence of.  I was shocked and entranced, disturbed and seduced all at once, my heart rate accelerating. Pitti Fragranze Florence 2018 and I was invited to Palazzo Capponi, where Hannibal had been partly filmed, on the riverside of the Arno, for the release of Filippo Sorcinelli, but_not_today, an evening surrounded by Renaissance timelessness wrapping the long-awaited release in a sumptuous tension.

Hannibal Lecter and Clarice Starling, Hannibal 2001

In the Ridley Scott Film, “Hannibal’, Lecter’s first  words spoken to Clarice Starling, direct and pervasive without a boundary yet well mannered, are as intimate as lovers, for by scent alone, or so it seems he knows the secrets of her body and the pulse that enlivens the flesh, he speaks in words we can hear yet there is much more conveyed in his measured speech,You use Evian skin cream and sometimes you wear L’air du temps, but not today.’  Yet for me, far beyond the movie connotations lies the real reason d'etre of this fragrance, merely given a formal presence by the film culture. Voice spoken without sound, unravelling audible narrative in the Blood. A language of silent encounter and viscous adhesion

 Always Walking Mazes, kellylugosisdead.

Filippo Sorcinelli but_not_today is shocking in its entrance, beguiling and asking of me the courage to continue within its labyrinthine tracts. Communicating the diametrically opposed nature yet saturated with the tautness of intense attraction between Hannibal Lecter and Clarice Starling. In autonomous synergy upon skin, the notes rise in accord, the 42 notes of Blood, metallic and raw, with leather-soaked edges, mirror my own flesh and blood, the taboo entwined with the familiar, one cannot but follow its lead.  The florals, Carnation and Jasmine encapsulated within 18 notes of white Lily are hedonistic and entrancing, their trails entering the pores and mounting the very corpuscles within to catapult around my body.  Still the labyrinthine voice asks, ‘place one foot in front of the other,” can you hear without ears as it whispers to me in bloodborne tones, it is ouroboric in persona as it returns upon itself over and over, animalic saturated in Blood soaked Leather, florals and the Lily tempering and laying gentle steps.

There is an ancient whisper interlaid within the formula of Fillipo Sorcinelli but_not_today, full of a Beauty we have ignored for too long and a voiceless dialogue between those who listen and decipher. Hours hence and I am still captivated, hungry for more and satiation is far away. but_not _today is not a perfume you wear, it wears you, underskin in haunting, beautiful enrapture that is so very reminiscent of the way Wine in an Oaken Barrel is in conversation and yearning for the wood and vice versa. It is a commanding exploration of corroded modes of communication. Heart-stopping in its jaw dropping intensity.

Filippo Sorcinelli but_not_today is primordial yet so exalted in its beauty, seeking liquidinous proclamation on flesh, silent attraction. For the brave and the curious.

Notes: Metal, Lily, Jasmine, Leather, Castoreum, Carnation, Animal and undisclosed notes.

  • That red bottle is stunning! The lily has a wonderful deep seductive scent. I’m definitely going to have to sample this. I’m enjoying Contre Bombarde 32 and Lavs by this innovative perfumer. I’ve watched Hannibal countless times…..sooo very sinister. Love that genre! Gosh, I would love to be the lucky winner. USA

  • wow, what a review, how could I not resist the chance to try and sniff this scent! I do not have a favorite from Filippo, and I have not seen Hannibal, I couldn’t sit thru the first one. hopefully this perfume won’t keep me up at night! thank you for the lovely review and draw! I’m in the US.

  • Thanks again for another wonderful review, Danu! Your words and the way you described this fragrance is just so mysterious and exciting at the same time. I love this part of your description- ‘but_not _today is not a perfume you wear, it wears you, underskin in haunting, beautiful enrapture…’ I haven’t had the opportunity to sample Filippo Sorcinelli yet but this article definitely piqued my interest. I’ve watched Hannibal a couple of times and to compare but_not_today to this film is very interesting. Thanks for this opportunity. – CA, USA

I liked this part: “Still the labyrinthine voice asks, ‘place one foot in front of the other,” can you hear without ears as it whispers to me in bloodborne tones, it is ouroboric in persona as it returns upon itself over and over..”.

  • I have seen all of the Hannibal movies and I very like those. I also seen the Hannibal series, that is also very good. So I would very love to try a perfume inspired of Hannibal Lecter.

  • I cannot watch movies like Hannibal (nor can I read the books). But I could certainly wear this perfume and would love the challenge of seeing if it wears me or if I wear it. I love metal and animal accords and I know I would wear it well.
I have only heard good things about Lavs.
    I live in the USA.

  • I don’t believe I’ve seen the 2001 Hannibal, but The Hannibal TV series was quite gruesome; I loved Mads Mikkelsen in it. Would like to try this one, it sounds like it could be dangerous…

The review captures the quality that is inherent in a lot of fragrance, of being familiar and appealing and transgressive all at the same time. I live in the US.

  • I love that Filippo Sorcinelli but_not_today is primordial and intense and beautiful at the same time and that Danu obviously adores this fragrance. I reside in Canada.

What appeals to me most about Filippo Sorcinelli but_not_today and Danu’s review is the description that the perfume “is not a perfume you wear, it wears you, underskin in haunting, beautiful enrapture that is so very reminiscent of the way Wine in an Oaken Barrel is in conversation and yearning for the wood and vice versa. It is a commanding exploration of corroded modes of communication. Heart-stopping in its jaw dropping intensity”. I don’t have a favorite perfume by Fillipo Sorcinelli, as I’ve never had the chance to try any. I actually haven’t seen the movie Hannibal. All I know is what I’ve learned about the movie from other references. I’m in the U.S.

  • An excellent and well written article by Danu! This sounds very unique and amazing. What intrigued me the most was “I was shocked and entranced, disturbed and seduced all at once, my heart rate accelerating.” Thanks for the giveaway and I live in the US! 🙂

  • Wow what appeals to me is a fragrance based on an amazing movie. I love the ideal of the notes in this fragrance and its composition. I live in CA, USA.

  • Dorian Fischer says:

Great review! I really like the idea to create a fragrance based on a Movie! It’s sounds very unique and I like the notes. Hannibal is one of my favourite movies and I also really enjoyed the series. From Vienna Austria

  • Oh my gosh, I forgot that was the first thing Hannibal says to Clarice! and yes, I’ve seen the movie, along with the subsequent films. What an interesting concept to use for a fragrance! I’ve never smelled anything from this perfume house before.
    I live in the USA

  • Oh my, this review is really one of the best I’ve read in a while. It makes one want to get a sample and try this one out. I love the notes especially jasmine and carnation. I have not seen the movie Hannibal.

  • I’m a big fan of Filippo Sorcinelli. He is a very unusual person and some of his creations seem to communicate with me on a deeper level. I have a sample of but_not_today and it is probably the most interesting and unique perfume I have smelled last year. It is dangerous, brutal but somehow fragile at the same time. This perfume has a certain wildness, everytime I wear it my senses are sharpened. It’s one of those few cases when the marketing concept is not just idle talking. Wearing but_not_today you can really look at the world through eyes of Hannibal Lecter. If you dare.
