FlowerSchool Entrance

On Thursday, July 13th, I attend a special Perfumery Launch Party at FlowerSchool New York presented by Sniffapalooza.

Entrance to FlowerSchool New York

FlowerSchool New York is the most prestigious school for the floral arts and flower design, offering design and arrangement classes for the enthusiast right up to the professional in New York City.

Stephen Dirkes of Euphorium Brooklyn

After thirteen years of celebrating all things floral, FlowerSchool New York has expanded its programs and now offers perfumery classes that delve into the nuances of scent with some of the top fragrance perfumers and specialists. Past perfumers who have participated include: Christophe Laudamiel, Maestro Fabio Luisi, and Cecile ZarokianStephen Dirkes of Euphorium Brooklyn is the fourth to join the faculty.

Michelle Gagnon, Calvert Crary, Stephen Dirkes and Karen Dubin

Karen Dubin, Founder & Director of Sniffapalooza, welcomed us and made introductions. Calvert Crary, the Executive Director of FlowerSchool New York followed and gave an overview of the evening's event which was dedicated to presenting the upcoming series of classes and articulating the school's mission which is to celebrate great floral design and designers and enhance one's life through flowers.

The Perfume Library: Stephen Dirkes gave an overview of his upcoming eight-part foundation course, The Perfume Library. This is the first time FlowerSchool New York has offered a full course of perfumery classes. The first four classes cover Citrus, Floral, Amber, Woods, and Spice. The second four are White Floral, Aromatic, Gourmand, and Leather. They are dedicated to being "stand alone" classes designed to work with the first four classes to create more sophisticated accords.

Stephen Dirkes followed with an engaging detailed deconstruction of his most recent creation, Butterfly, along with Petales. Blotters were passed around to experience and discuss the two scents. I will attend one of the upcoming classes and give a detailed report here; most likely Amber and Woods; perfect for cooler weather.

Michelle Gagnon of MKG Bio Alchemy

Botanical Beauty: Skincare Blending Workshop with Michelle Gagnon-Michelle Gagnon, bio chemist and the founder of MKG Bio Alchemy, specializes in creating signature aromatic formulations using 100% naturally derived botanical ingredients. Michelle's formulations are crafted in small batches and hand poured into Miron violet glass bottles to maximize the longevity of their living ingredients. She presented her newest product, a Face Oil, discussed her creative process, and her work at Enfleurage (since 2012 the well-known fragrance boutique).

For her class, Michelle Gagnon plans to focus on precious select essential oils like Sandalwood, Geranium, Sea Buckthorn and Carrot Seed (which help the skin recover from the sun's damage) and the lands of which these oils are native to, their traditional use in culture, and the many health benefits they provide today. Participants take home the collection of curated oils,  and either a custom body or bath oil.

Calvert Crary or PerfumeSchool New York

Calvert Crary closed the event with a masterful demonstration on how to create a floral arrangement along with a brief Q&A.

  • Won’t be able to attend the class but hope the best
Usar prob interests me the most. Haven’t heard of this House either
    Thanks for this giveaway

  • Have not had the pleasure yet to try one from this house. If I could attend the class it would be the one called aromatic. If I’m chosen in the draw I’d love the bottle of Butterfly. US

  • What I found most fascinating about the review is the information on the perfumery classes and how each of the eight classes is a different genre of the fragrances. It encourages me to learn perfumery. I would love to go to these classes but I’m not even close to the area. Butterfly would be my choice if I won. I’m in the US. Thank you so much.

Euphorium Brooklyn has come a long way in a short time and now Stephen Dirkes gets to teach at FlowerSchool NY. I may not be able to attend the classes but I might explore such opportunities in the future. My choice is Usar 50ml. I am in US.

The classes sound very interesting. I live on the west coast or I would attend the gourmand and spice classes. Maybe someday the classes will travel to perfume shops. The face oils sound nice, cant go wrong with the natural ingredients. If I am the lucky winner I would choose the 50 Ml Chocolatl. Been searching for something with chocolate, but no luck yet, it’s a tricky fragrance. Thanks for the draw. I live in the US.

  • I would love to attend any of these classes! Anything with the name FlowerSchool must be fabulous. I love flower arranging and I make a facial oil of my own. Stephen Dirkes “deconstruction of his most recent creation, Butterfly, along with Petales” sounds fun. I live in the US. I would love a bottle of Chocolatl.

  • VerbenaLuvvr says:

The Perfume Library classes, especially the ones covering citrus and spice, would be so such a joy to attend–hoping your contributor can report on these classes in his follow-up. Butterfly EDP would be my choice, lovely notes and clover is a favorite. I am in CONUS.

  • No doubt any class would be a wonderful experience. I learned here that Miron violet glass enables the living ingredients to last longer. :)Reading the notes of all the house offerings I’d like the Suedois. usa

  • If I could take any of the classes, it would definitely be the Perfume Libraru! O how I wish I were near New York, and had money. That could really help me increase the sophistication of my incense. The description of this event make me almost feel like I was there, if only I could smell it.

I really want to try the Suedois. Actually everything in the Voluptuary set sounds divine.

I am in the US and am registered, but couldn’t figure out how to sign in from my phone.

    Xoe

  • Oh! How I wish I could make one of the classes but I wouldn’t be able to get off of work early enough to get into the city. I might just have to figure something out because I’d love to attend one of them.

I’d be thrilled if I won because I’d choose Chocolatl!!

    I live in the U.S.

  • Elizabeth T. says:

Oh, if only I lived in NY and could take a class! All of them!

I have really been impressed with Euphorium Brooklyn – I’ve had the opportunity to try Suedois and Chocolatl, and neither of them are wallflower perfumes. They both pack tons of personality in! They are both beautiful in fall and winter, and I’m looking forward to the changing season so I can wear them again. I would love to try something in the other end of the spectrum, so Butterfly woujld be my choice. Thank you for the report! I’m in the USA.

  • NiceVULady says:

It would be wonderful to attend the first four classes mentioned, followed by the class on skincare blending. Unfortunately, I live too far away and have other restrictions. All sound beautiful, but I would love Usar should I win.
Thank you for letting us know what is available. Thank you also for the draw. I live in the USA

  • SO very interesting! Would love to attend if I lived closer. Huge fan of Euphorium Brooklyn scents, would love to win Butterfly . Thanks for the generous giveaway, I live in the U.S.

  • Tom Schroeder says:

In lieu of actually being there, I enjoyed Hernando’s synopsis of the launch event and learning about Stephen Dirkes and Karen Dubin. Thank you for taking the time to provide this review. If I were able to take a class, it would be the class on amber. I love amber accord and would like to know what is involved in creating them. The Euphorium Brooklyn fragrance that most captures my imagination is Butterfly, which I would love to try. I live in San Jose, California.

  • What a fun launch party! While all the classes sound great, the Skincare Blending Workshop would be the first class I’d want to attend. I love using facial oils (<3 sea buckthorn) and it would be neat to learn how to make my own. I've tried several Euphorium Brooklyn fragrances, and Usar and Butterfly have been my favorites so far. Butterfly in particular though, which is one of the best herbal-minty perfumes I've ever smelled. So that would def be my choice! In the US.

  • ntabassum92 says:

I liked that Hernando included information on what some of the essential oils do. So cool that they help with sun damage, which is so necessary this summer! I have just received some essential oils as a gift, so I will play around them. I am not planning to attend a class as they are very far from me. I would choose the 50 mL of Chocolatl. Thank you!

  • I think its really great that FlowerSchool has expanded its programs and to offer perfumery classes. I would love to attend classes. Would just need to arrange some travel plans and lodging staying in NY. I would say id like any of the classes but maybe more especially the Perfume Library. As far as fragrances go I have tried Chocolatl, Petales and Suedois and would love to try Butterfly or Usar which would be my choice. Thanks for the opportunity. I live in the USA

  • doveskylark says:

Hernando’s report made me think how nice it would be to live in Brooklyn to take interesting classes like the ones described here. I’d definitely take Michelle Gagnon’s oil blending class. I strongly believe in the power of oils to soothe the skin.
I’d choose Cilice if I were the winner.
    I live in the USA.

  • Hikmat Sher Afridi says:

This was a wonderful opportunity for the perfume lovers to attend the perfume classes. Whenever I be there, will definitely attend such classes. I think Stephen Dirkes’s presence, demonstration and detail overview in the event was like icing on the cake! My choice is WALD 50ml bottle.
Thanks to the generosity of Euphorium Brooklyn and CafleureBon by letting my relative address in US.

  • What a clever idea and I enjoyed Hernando’s report. Brooklyn is too far away but, if If I could attend a class, I would like to sit in on Botanical Beauty: Skincare Blending Workshop with Michelle Gagnon. It would be fun to have a custom body or bath oil. I would love to try the the Brooklyn Heritage Discovery Set.
