Where to go perfume shopping in New York City 2024

ÇaFleureBon Guide to Perfume Shopping in New York City

The City’s olfactive profile is on the upswing. Many brands are launching new releases with dinners, cocktail parties, and store opening events; it almost makes us forget the toll the Pandemic took on our city. New store openings, Dior Beauty boutique, Commodity Fragrances (both in SoHo), Stéle in Brooklyn, Infiniment Coty Paris on the Upper East Side and Diptyque’s newly redesigned flagship Madison Avenue store are fabulous sensory must-visit destinations. There just isn’t a neighborhood in the city where you can’t get find all things scented.  Case in point, the Upper Eastside. So, if you are a New Yorker or coming to town for the Holidays, here’s where to go Perfume Shopping In New York City.

Perfume shopping in New York City

New York City skyline was taken in November from the Upper Eastside by Hernando

The Upper East Side has shown resilience and expansion. The Frederick Malle, Creed, Bond No. 9, and the Jo Malone boutiques are long-time mainstays that are as great as ever but the neighborhood suffered with the closing of Goutal Paris, Kilian, Atelier Cologne, all on a one-block stretch on Madison Avenue, along with Lush and the L’Occitane Flagship on 86th Street. But this year’s new store openings have filled the void. D.S. & Durga’s Carlyle Hotel fragrance in 2023 was a portent of things to come. David Moltz opened the D.S. & Durga boutique on Madison Avenue  it was a sign this might be the new fragrance district. MALIN & Goetz followed suit. Infiniment Coty Paris opened recently on 79th Street, the first in the U.S. And, word has it that a second Osswald boutique is in the works for the Upper Eastside.

I have visited many of these stores such as Bloomingdale’s, Saks Fifth Avenue and Scent Bar. The L’Occitane store is calling my name as it’s just so cute and well lit. Also, the Infiniment and the newly launched Commodity stores as equally beautiful. I also heard through the grapevine that Amouage is soon opening a new store in the SoHo neighborhood. The Café Tabac fragrance also looks absolutely divine and the discovery set will help me familiarize with a house I know little about. I’m located in the USA.

  • Brad Woolslayer says:

I would love to spend a week in NYC and visit these stores. Byredo and D.S & Durga would certainly top my list. I would love to try Cafe Tabac and the sample set. I already love Signature, since I’m a huge fan of rhubarb. I live in Maryland USA.

  • I’ve been to Aesop on Bergen Street, when I was working in Carroll Gardens. Regrettably, I was not into perfume at all at the time, but love all their products because of the fragrance. The most perfect natural scents I’ve ever smelled. Hopefully I’ll make it back to NYC some day and can indulge in perfume shopping!!!

  • AromaDulce73 says:

New York is amazing. You can practically find anything and everything in that city. I’ve been to Fueguia 1833, LeLabo, DS & Durga, Scent Bar & Macy Herald Square. Hopefully get to check out some more boutique stores next time I’m in NYC.

Cafe Tabac sounds amazing, would love to get my nose on that one and also the ones in the discovery set.

One of the things I plan to do with my money is take a trip to NYC for at least a week with the primary purpose of visiting fragrance shops. While I’m there I’d like to visit many places, e.g. the Aedes de Venustas shop, a Saks Fifth location, a Bloomingdale’s location, the Diptyque redesigned flagship Madison Avenue store, and more. I would love to win a bottle of Aedes de Venustas Tabac Cafe and/or their discovery set. I’ve been intrigued to try them for a long time now. I live in MD, USA.

  • NYC is magical during the holiday season. So many great places to visit, especially if you’re looking for some presents for yourself! I’ve visited several of the stores listed here, including almost all of the department stores and chain stores and quite a few of the specialty houses. I have tried Cafe Tabac which is a perfect winter scent and would love to try the sample set. MD, USA

  • I’ve never been to NYC. I am in awe of all the shops. I would be very interested in the new Coty shop. Also I would go to Krigler because I hear they have a new gourmand and the notes seem amazing. I would go to Aedes as I have ordered from them and they have great online customer service. Santa Maria Novella is a store I have visited in Miami which I love. Thanks Aedes for the kind giveaway. Happy Holidays everyone. USA.

  • I have never been to New York, but would love to make this pilgrimage! Just the extensive listing here makes me want to visit. WOW. This is a page I will be bookmarking hopefully for future use. The drawing prizes for this round made my jaw drop. Another Wow! What a wonderful tool you made here, and a wonderful opportunity. Thanks!

I’m super curious about the upcoming Parfums Obim launch and I’d love to visit Brooklyn to check them out. I’ve never been to NY, but it is on my must do to live list. I live on the opposite coast, in Oregon.

  • Iuno Feronia says:

What a great list! Thank you – I am looking forward to my next NYC trip – my creditcard maybe not 😉 So far, I haven’t shopped fragrances win the City. I Know Cafe Tabac and it smells divine.
    I live in Europe.

  • Oh how exciting!!! I adore AdV and I don’t have this one! I was just saying how their Iris Nazarene belongs on everyone’s top ten Iris list. And their Copal and Kumquat and Rose fragrances are all illustrious! I have a few more on my list to get. I so hope I am lucky this round. Thank you for the generous giveaway.
    I am in the USA
PS this is such an incredibly handy list. Thank you for taking the time to do this!

  • ianbradleyandrews says:

This list is incredible. Because of previous lists, I was able to visit scent bar, anedes and maxaroma. It made my trip a delight. I’d LOVE to win cafe tabac. I love Bertie! I live in Indiana.

  • ericwaynebiscuit says:

Oh, Stéle and Olfactory Art Keller are at the very top of my to-visit list! Stéle has such a special curation of brands, specifically being the FIRST American retailer carrying Racyne ( a brand I was soooo excited to finally try!).

  • Definitely on my list: DS & Durga (for the local maker) and Frederic Malle! (I’m located in USA)

  • maryhmorlin@gmail.com says:

In going through the list of perfume shops, etc, I am kind of amazed at how many I’ve been to when I don’t even live in NYC. But I love fragrance and it is always a part of my NYC visits. I see many new places that will be on my must visit list for my next trip. Ok fair warning my list is long. I’m dying to try Cafe Tabac. I’ve been searching for a tobacco based perfume that reminds me of my grandmother who smoked and wore perfume…haven’t found it yet maybe Cafe Tabac is it?

Holy cow, this list is really detailed! Wonderful. I am long overdue for another visit to Aedes Perfumery, and I always find a wonderful treasure or two at Maison10. I found my wedding fragrance at Macy’s(Lancome counter) seven years ago, and have adored all of the department store counters, many long-gone…And I would love to pay proper homage soon to LuckyScent here in NY(I was a customer in LA many years ago). Cafe’ Tabac sounds complex and deeply satisfying, like putting your feet up after having neighbors over for a holiday gathering.

    Thank you!

  • I haven’t done a lot of perfume shopping in NYC. From your fabulous list, I’ve only been to D.S. & Durga in SoHo and Kiehl’s in the East Village. I’ve walked by the Aedes boutique on Orchard St., but I’ve never been in nor smelled any of their fragrances. I’d love to win a bottle of Café Tabac and a discovery set. And next time I’m walking by, I’ll make a point of going in! I’m in Oklahoma, USA.

  • Maybe I have missed it, but I did not see Penhaligons on your list. They recently opened a boutique at 123 Prince Street New York, NY 10012 (https://www.penhaligons.com/us/en/new-york-new-store-opening).

I’ve been wanting to visit Aedes during recent trips to NYC, but time has been limited. I have made it to Scent Bar, Mizensir, Diptique, and D.S. & Durga. Work will take me back to NYC in the spring which should allow me to visit Aedes de Venustas. They have a number of brands I think I’d like to explore such as Aedes de Venustas and Nomenclature.

I am located in the USA.

  • First off thank you for compiling this list! I’ve wanted to go to Osswalds for a while and plan on going after the holiday seasons is over. Before I was into perfumes I bought my first bottle of Chanel de Bleu at Macy’s, and more recently have visited a few of the stores in Park Slope.

    Cheers
    Seth

  • I’m envious of the folks in NYC that can try such a wide range of products at all these locations. I haven’t had the chance to visit any of these, but I’d like to check out the D.S. & Durga boutique, try some LUSH products, and I’m intrigued by Aedes Perfumery’s curation.

    I’m in the USA.

    51 Bergen Street (Boerum Place)

    and I want to visit
    D.S. & Durga at
    126 N. 6th Street (Berry Street)

  • I have not visited in any of the stores in NYC (and it was a long list). Probably won’t either. Even so, love to win the bottle of Cafe Tabac. US

  • Thank you for this detailed and inspiring guide to perfume shopping in NY City…. truly reflects its vibrant and resilient spirit. I especially appreciate the spotlight on the Upper East Side and the exciting addition of new boutiques like D.S. & Durga and Infiniment Coty Paris, which add fresh energy to the neighborhood. Aedes Perfumery on Orchard Street has long been a favorite of mine, not just for its selection of rare fragrances but also for its welcoming and knowledgeable staff who elevate the shopping experience. Lastly, a heartfelt thank you for the Café Tabac giveaway! It’s a wonderful way to celebrate and engage with fragrance enthusiasts. Greetings from NY 😉

  • Michelyn Camen pointed out something no one would deny , NYC took a heavy toll because of C and the lockdowns. Upstate New York measures were nowhere near as restrictive.
“Please let us know if we have left out any stores that carry fragrance; we will add them to the next update” Michelyn Camen
Let’s see the whole list first …
    1. Perfume Bottles Auction 1050 2nd Avenue, New York, NY 10022
    Vintage and discounted fragrances
    2. Alchemist’s Kitchen/Elixir Bar 117 Crosby St
    3. Lafco NYC 285 Lafayette Street, New York, NY 10012
    Nice solid fragrances
    4. Anthropologie 375 West Broadway, NY 10012
    5. MiN New York on 117 Crosby St
I went to Aedes de Venustas on 16 A Orchard Street article like Michelyn Camen suggested
“In 2002 Aedes Perfumery moved next door to 9 Christopher Street. With many stores closing in the neighborhood after 9/11, Robert and Karl were able to negotiate favorable terms on the rent and were now on the street level. Their specialty was working with celebrities, private clients and giving personalized service to all. Having attended a number of events before I inquired how many were typically held in a year (pre-Covid)? Robert figures three to four (mostly to celebrating a fragrance launch or introducing a new line). Aedes Perfumery moved to its third location in 2016, around the corner at 7 Greenwich Avenue. Grand in presence it appeared to be a huge success”
I was not aware Aedes Perfumery moved a couple of times, and Greenwich Avenue boutique is their third location, lovely place.
I have visited more than half of the stores in your guide, and bought fragrances from:
D.S. & Durga Uptown and Brooklyn boutiques – Duzina Rozi , Amber Kiso
    Aedes Perfumery – Encens Japonais
Tom Ford, Channel, PDM , Dior, Creed and the 5 not in your list. The one I’d like to visit is the Amouage boutique
Born and bred in Upstate New York , currently based in EU . If the rules of the giveaway are allowing me to potentially ship the fragrance to my cousin I’d love to enter, if not best of luck to US based subscribers
    Thanks for the draw

  • Good grief you were hit hard in NYC, the whole c-d thing imposed a heavy burden on your shoulders. Good to know the city and the fragrance scene is not only recovering but expanding.
Local stores i have visited are Parfums de Marly, Creed , DIOR, Hermès and LeLabo boutiques and Bloomingdale’s, Saks and Nordstrom department stores. Fragrance boutiques in NYC I’d like to visit the most are Aedes Perfumery and Scent Bar NYC.
The fragrance Café Tabac i find attractive for a few reasons, Bertrand Duchaufour is one of my favorite perfumers , the East Village bar inspiration and my love for Aedes de Venustas Iris Nazarena , beautiful Iris I bought because of Carlos aka Brooklyn Fragrance Lover YouTube video, RIP .
    Thank you for the opportunity

I used to live in NYC so have done most of the mainstay rounds, still it’s always nice seeing the changes happening as well as stalwart fixtures on the scene. This was quite the comprehensive round up, thanks for putting in the effort.

    Happy holidays from Oregon!

  • Can’t say I know much about NYC perfume shopping, where and what I could find . Last time I visited rhe city to help a fellow Pastry Chef with the arrangement of his first bakery ,thanks to again Hernando Courtright recommendations in one of his Cafleurebon articles i also went to D.S. & Durga Madison Avenue boutique to try Pistachio and went home with a bottle.
Scrolling through the long list of NYC fragrance stores recommendations other than D.S. & Durga Madison Avenue boutique I’ve only been to Nordstrom, Osswald and one of BondN9 boutiques I believe on Bleecker Street.
I’d definitely want to visit Aedes Perfumery, Mizensir Soho boutique and Scent Bar NYC.
Bertrand Duchaufour career is beyond remarkable , cooking so many successful, beautiful and popular fragrances , from Jubilation XXV from Amouage to Timbuktu , Noir Exquis from L’Artisan Parfumeur , Trayee from Neela Vermeire and now intriguing one called Café Tabac by Aedes de Venustas. Café Tabac in East Village was a legendary place, more of a bar lounge to my knowledge,
Appreciate all Hernando Courtright NYC fragrance stores recommendations , and the giveaway campaign

I visited Aedes de Venustas a few years ago and received such a warm welcome. I remember trying Iris Nazarena and falling in love with this fragrance.
I have visited many of the shops on the list. I had a very nice experience at Osswald and the Diptyque shop on Bleecker Street. I also love going to Bergdorf Goodman. The woman at the the Van Cleef and Arpel’s counter was so kind to me.
I would like to visit the new Coty shop. And I would love to stop by Fueguia 1833, Sabon, and Enfleurage in the future.
    I live in the USA.

  • Thank you for this incredible list- thought I’ve been many but apparently still so many to tick off the lists! Recently went to scentbar and was a great experience with many niche and rare scents – Aedes similarly would be right up my alley. Would love to try Café Tabac – wonderful list of notes. Live in NYC

  • I’m not on first-name terms with NYC fragrance market , quite a lot of the brands I know but but with a few exceptions I’ve never been to their boutiques .
Those of the store from Hernando Courtright list who I had the pleasure of visiting are LeLabo , Creed and Frédéric Malle locations. I’d love to visit Fieguia 1833 , Mizensir, Osswald Perfumery, Scentbar NYC and especially Aedes Perfumery.
Café Tabac i don’t know but the name makes me think of Cuban cigars and ristretto , exciting release. I’m new to Aedes de Venustas but no doubt Bertrand Duchaufour knows how to make upscale cosmopolitan fragrances, I’m a big fan of Neela Vermeire Creations Trayee, L’Artisan Parfumeur Timbuktu and Amouage Jubilation XXV. I respect him as a perfumer so much, I’m even willing to forgive him as a tailor for what he said in the interview with Michelyn

Did you buy a bespoke suit?
BD: No, its not my style.
    🙂
Thank you Hernando Courtright, Aedes Perfumery, Aedes de Venustas, Michelyn
    USA

  • If I have to summarize the amount of pleasing to the eyes, and mind new sensory must-visit destinations I’ll start with Hernando Courtright info that there’s no neighborhood in the city where you can’t find all things scented .
He had some very special fragrance experiences during the years with Robert Gerstner and Karl Bradl I’m sure, the co-owners or Aedes Perfumery and their Aedes de Venustas brand. Hopefully one day I’ll be able to share such experiences myself. Other than Aedes de Perfumery I’d like to visit Amouage , CHANNEL, Oswald, DIOR and some of D.S. & Durga boutiques . I’ve been to the Creed boutique and Scent Bar NYC.
From Aedes de Venustas Café Tabac I’m expecting upscale and hedonistic tobacco fragrance.
    Thanks for the draw

Still going strong in Europe, but Atelier Cologne pulled out of the US market years ago.
I’ve been to Creed boutique , the closed now Atelier Cologne place , Bloomingdale’s, one of Channel and Dior boutiques , ScentBar NYC, Oswald where I met Olya actually back when she was working there … way before she joined Cafleurebon.
I had the pleasure of visiting Aedes Perfumery, and to know most of Aedes de Venustas fragrances , my favorites are
    1. Iris Nazarena / Café Tabac
    2. Encens Japonais , the new interpretation of Aedes de Venustas by L’Artisan Parfumeur. The fragrance , and scented candles were made back in the days by L’Artisan exclusively for Aedes de Venustas boutique. The nose of both is of course Bertrand Duchaufour
    3. Cierge De Lune
Iris Nazarena in the original bottle , and one very old vintage bottle of Aedes de Venustas by L’Artisan Parfumeur i own
The places I’d like to visit are Bond N9 , Diptyque and Krigler boutiques.
    All profiles I already follow, @ waltherp99bg
