New York City perfume shopping 2020

Midtown Manhattan in New York City featuring the Empire State Building Photo by Hernando

What a difference a year makes. Since the last ÇaFleureBon Guide to Perfume Shopping in New York City 2019, a number of high-profile boutiques and department stores closed some due to the cost of doing business in New York City and some as a result of the impact COVID-19 is having. With New York City retail come to a standstill in March 2020, many fragrance oriented  stores were able to re-open in late June with severe restrictions, but others never did. For those months the only way to get your fragrance fix was online with discovery sets and sample kits being big sellers. But for many, the experience of shopping in New York City in person cannot be duplicated with an online purchase. Many wondered how shopping for fragrance would look like when the stores would re-open and for how long would the “new normal” exist.

Sadly, some favorite fragrant destinations shuttered this year; Twisted Lily, Goutal Paris (2), Osswald along with department stores Barney’s (3), and Neiman Marcus at Hudson Yards. Fortunately, they all continue to have (with the exception of Barney’s) strong online presences.

For many of us, nothing can replace in person shopping experience with a store owner, brand ambassador, or a great SA to discover new scents.

  • Fantastic list! Thank you! I’ve ordered from Twisted Lily, Aedes Perfumery, Atelier Cologne and Molton Brown. If lucky, I’d choose psy-cou from Nomenclature. Thanks for another great draw! Mich USA

  • This is a great list, however, not being in New York, haven’t been to many of these places, though have visited the brand name stores in other cities or ordered from them online (such as DIOR, Macy’s, Neiman Marcus). It is true that in-person experience with a not-pushy, knowledgeable salesperson can be a real treat. Thanks for the list and the draw. If I were lucky enough to win this draw, I would go for psy_cou. Writing from the USA.

  • This is a great list. I’m not near NYC but have ordered from several stores, including some of the chains present in other area (Blue Mercury, Bloomingdales, Nieman Marcus, etc). NYC specific stores I’ve ordered from include; Lafco NY and Malin + Goetz. I would love to worn Iri-del because of my iris obsession. Commenting from MD, USA.

  • I’ve never been to N.Y.C. except for having driven through it on the Interstate highway when I used to be a motorist. During the COVID-19 pandemic, though, I ordered something from Maxaroma, I made many orders through Fragrancenet.com, I ordered fragrances from Macy’s, and I also received something from Perfumeonline.ca. In recent times I was actually wondering where in N.Y.C. are all the places to buy fragrances (in case I ever went there for that purpose), and now I have an exhaustive list for that; thank you for taking the time for that. If I win the draw, then I would choose the Nomenclature fragrance “Psy_cou”. I thank you and Aedes Perfumery for the giveaway opportunity. I live in MD., U.S.A.

  • I’ve never been to New York City so I haven’t had a chance to shop at these stores, but I’ve ordered/visited from the local location of most of the department stores on the list Sephora/Saks/Macy’s etc. If I win I’d like psy-cou from nomenclature.

  • Brad Woolslayer says:

I’d like to try Orb-ital by Nomenclature to see how it uses the Iso-e-Super accord. I live in Maryland USA.

  • Ah so many options for people in NYC. Such an amazing city. I was recently there and it was very strange to see it much emptier than usual. Until know I’ve both fragrances at Sephora, Diptique, Atelier Cologne and Penhaligon’s. In case I am picked for the giveaway I would choose Nomenclature – She-so. I’m form Illinois, US.

  • This is quite a comprehensive list. As the list shows, the perfume shops are all over Manhattan and Brooklyn. You can visit any part of these boroughs and you may come across one of the perfume shops out of nowhere. My choice is Adr-ett by Nomenclature. USA

  • MarcelRoosUSA says:

I’ve been to PDM and Le Labo. I’ve only recently started getting into niche fragrances, so those were two easy ones to check out. When the pandemic is behind us I’m definitely going to use this guide to check out a lot more. I would really love to try Shi-sõ. The notes sound amazing, and unlike anything I’ve owned or smelled before.

  • Wow still so many places to shop for perfume in NYC even with this year’s unfortunate closings. Ive actually never shopped in NYC for perfume or at all really. I havent ordered from any of the places mentioned as of yet either although I’ve certainly looked and dreamed, lol. I’ve also been interested in Nomenclature fragrances but havent tried any. The two I have looked at the most are Iri_del and Adr_ett. Especially after reading about it recently in the piece here, “The Voelkl Ratio”, if I was to win I’d choose Adr_ett. From CT USA. Thanks for the generous draw.

  • So many beautiful shops! I will do my best to visit all if them. I dud online order from Aedes! Great service ! Thanks. And I like Aedes de Venustas perfumes.
If I were lucky enough to win this draw, I would go for psy_cou.

I have only been to the big stores in NYC. This is a big list of boutiques that I need to visit. I have not tried a nomenclature fragrance yet, but I’ve had my eye on them for a while now. New Jersey USA.

  • Bryant Worley says:

When I lived in New York, I shopped at Bloomingdale’s, Macy’s Herald Square, and visited Nordstrom, Victoria’s Secret, and Sephora. And, recently, I’ve shopped at a Bath & Body Works here in Maryland.

The Nomenclature fragrance I would want to win (and this was a hard choice, Hernando) is Fluo_ral – Eau de Parfum (the Rhubarb note gave it the edge).

I live in Waldorf, MD, USA.

  • I haven’t visited any of the stores in NYC. I have ordered from a couple of them. For the draw I’d love Nomenclature’s iri_del. US

  • Oh wow I hope to be able to visit many of these places in person soon- but in the meantime I’ve been ordering from Le labo, Lush, The Body Shop, and Nordstrom. I would love to try orb_ital. Reader from California.

  • I miss shopping in NYC. Shopping in New York in a blizzard when the trains shut down is a memory I hold dear. It looks like they are in for another blizzard tomorrow. The list makes me feel very jealous and nostalgic. I’ve been to several of the stores. If I won, I would really like to try nomenclature psy_cou.

  • Have been to and ordered from Bloomingdales, but when last in NY hadn’t started getting into fragrance, so didn’t visit any of the boutique shops unfortunately. If chosen, I would be interested in Psy-cou. CA, USA.

  • Looking forward now to visiting NY with lots of money some day. This list gives me fantasies of being an oligarch… I’ve been to an Hermès boutique, a Santa Maria Novella, and to Gump’s (in San Francisco)– that’s probably closest to an experience like any of these stores. It’s stunningly hard to decide on just one Nomenclature, but I’ll go with shi_so.

  • I haven’t visited or ordered from any of the stores listed, but if I went to New York I would want to visit I Hate Perfume and Comme de Garcons. If I won, I would choose the psy_cou, I like palo santo scents. Thanks for the draw, I am in the USA.

  • I haven’t been to any of these places except the Dept stores but I definitely want to check out Arabian oud and scent bar nyc when I can travel to NYC and see my sister and niece again. I’d love to win a bottle of psy cou! Michigan, USA

  • This is an impressive list of stores I will be keeping for sure, in the hope of going back to NYC soon! I am sorry about the Twisted Lily (which I had the pleasure to visit) and Osswald (which I never visited), but excited about all the options. Perfumeries I have enjoyed are Perfumarie, The Saks Fifth Avenue fragrance hall, and several Sephora stores. My Nomenclature choice is the lovely Holy_Wood. I am in the Dallas area.

  • BostonScentGuy says:

I love and have been to many of these stores! Favorite standalone boutiques include Etro (for the beautiful fashion in addition to the scents), Frederic Malle and their weird scent columns, and Le Labo. It’s hard to also pass up a visit to Bergdorf’s and Saks and RIP Barney’s of course (all of this is making me very sad to not have the in person experience this year!). In terms of downtown stores, a couple of my favorites have disappeared (Osswald, Twisted Lily), though Aedes is still lovely…I miss their large store in the village. Thanks for this generous draw! I’d love to win Psy-Cou. I’m in the US.

Thank you Cafleurebon for supporting local stores.

I’ve never been to any of these stores because my visits to NY predate my interest in fragrances.

Rest assured, I will be checking this litany list out the enxt time I’m in the “Big Apple”

    Cheers from Madison, WI, USA

Edit – forgot to mention that I woould absolutley love Nomenclature Psy-Cou.

Apologies for the double post. Please disregard my previosu entry.

  • Great guide! I haven’t visited any most physical perfume shops in NYC but am looking forward to the day that we can roam free in these places. I’m interested in Psy_cou. (US)

  • Michael Lynady says:

Wow – the list brings back so many great memories and so many more places to explore.
Been to Creed Boutique, Atelier, Bond no9 and Byredo.
Can’t wait to stop by more.
    Efflor-esce would be my pick.
    Pennsylvania USA

  • Unfortunately, I have never ordered from any of these websites or places. I have never been to New York before. The closest I have done to visiting these places is visiting the nearby Nordstrom and Neiman Marcus. I was able to try my fragrances there. I would love to win Psy_cou, that fragrance seems amazing!

  • I haven’t been to New York City in a very long time, so I haven’t visited the majority, if not all, of the stores you listed. Its nice to know that so many are still in business. I’d love to win adr_ett . I think it just speaks to me. Thank you for all the work you have put in to assemble this list. Many thanks to Aedes Perfumery for making this draw posssible. I’m in the USA

  • At least with perfumery you can sample, but it is way more fun to visit a shop than to order samples online. I’ve never been to NYC, but I shop with Twisted Lily. Not familiar with the line, but I’d love to win Orb-ital (the rhubarb note). Thanks for the chance. Stay safe in the snow storm. USA.

  • Amazing list of some fine shops in the NY. I have ordered from Twisted Lily and the Nomenclature I llove and personally have Holy_wood. Thank you for such a great draw. Season greetings from CA USA.

  • I have been lucky enough to visit many of these listings. I visited the Scent Bar right before the pandemic. What a friendly environment! I loved sampling many fragrances from Parfums Dusita there. I am very sad about Osswald and Barney’s closing. I experienced assistance from wonderful and knowledgeable managers. I can’t wait to go back to NYC to shop at more brick and mortar shops.
    I would choose psy_cou.
    I live in the USA.

  • redwheelbarrow says:

One of these days I will have my little NYC perfume tour and I will definitely be using this list as a resource. Fingers crossed it can happen this summer. Thanks so much for this and the draw. I’ve never tried any Nomenclature fragrances but I’m leaning toward psy-cou.

  • I have visited The Twisted Lily and was saddened to hear of it’s closing although I have visited the online incarnation. This is quite an exhaustive list that gives me hope for a future visit to NYC. I think I’m most interested in holy_wood both for my love of classic Hollywood movies and for different interpretations of rose. I live in the USA.

  • I have only ever been to the Bloomingdales in New York. I was able to try Maison Francis Kurkdjian there although I wish I would have visited more fragrance boutiques. I would love to win Adr_ett. I live in Florida, US.

  • I have never been to New York before but I have been to Neiman Marcus and Bloomingdales before and I have had samples of their Tom Ford and Jo Malone fragrances. I would really love to go to their stores in New York. From Nomenclature, I would like to receive iri_del.

  • I’ve shopped several times in Macy’s Herald Square. Most of the times it has been when my boyfriend’s family has visited from England. I LOVE that store!
    I would choose psy_cou.
    I live in the USA.

  • I haven’t visited any of these stores sadly, but I have ordered online from Aedes Perfumery! I’d love to win psy_cou from Nomenclature, thank you so much for the chance! I am in the US 🙂

  • Michael Prince says:

I wish I had this many options for testing and purchasing fragrances near me. Where I live it’s Ulta, Macys, and Sephora. If I drive an hour away I can go to a Nordstrom and Saks Fifth Ave. Psy-Cou sounds like the most interesting Nomenclature fragrance to me. I am from Ohio, USA.

  • Thank you for this great article! I’ve been to NYC several times and it is indeed a city with a lot to offer in terms of fragrances. I have visited many of the shops you mentioned and I plan to be able to go through all of them. Instant gratification when buying perfumes in shops is what I love versus buying them online. I’d love to win Nomenclature Shi-so or Holly-wood. Thanks for this draw! – CA, USA
