BDK Parfums Villa Neroli Review

Founded in 2016, BDK Parfums has become a consumer and industry favorite, with their exciting range of niche perfumery. Ambre Safrano will soon be available worldwide, after a one-year exclusivity at Harrods. Gris Charnel in its Extrait version was launched a few weeks ago. Just in time for the heat of summer BDK Parfums Villa Néroli was added to the Collection Azur last month. The collection is a tribute to the Mediterranean region where  David Benedek, the brand’s founder spent happy days of his childhood. For the brand’s 17th creation, the island of Capri located in the Bay of Naples, whose unspoiled nature and art of living inspired him. “When I first discovered Capri, I had the strange and fascinating sensation that time had stopped. Walking on the heights of the island, under the light of the setting sun, I could see sumptuous villas. In their alleys, the bigaradiers (bitter orange trees) give off their fragrant scent. For me, it is like a solar joy, between optimism and serenity. This new creation from the Collection Azur is an invitation to live the dolce vita”. -David Benedek

To bottle Capri, David Benedek once again called on Alexandra Carlin, perfumer for Symrise. When BDK Parfums Villa Néroli was unveiled to the media last April, both shared with us how they worked hand in hand on Velvet Tonka, their first collaboration which was awarded the 2022 Best Fragrance from an Independent Brand French Fifi on June 16th, marking an important milestone in their respective careers.  Capri famous for the natural beauty of beaches, cliffs and coves was fertile ground for both to play with the colors, landscape and the smells that characterize the island.

David Benedek imagined BDK Parfums Villa Néroli as a mysterious fragrance wrapped in his unforgettable memory of enveloping and sensual orange blossom, the starting point for perfumer Alexandra Carlin:I imagined a garden of orange trees in Capri, a garden of abundance overlooking the Faraglioni, thousand-year-old rocks eroded by the wind, the rain and the sea. When the sun is barely down, this garden takes on an air of honeyed sweetness”. The perfumer focused on the sensual facet of orange blossom, deliberately moving away from its soft and fresh symbolism evoking childhood and innocence: “I started with an orange blossom that I had worked on at ISIPCA (the famous Versailles fragrance post-graduate school). I wanted it sensual, honeyed, amber and heady. Narcotic, even”. Alexandra Carlin has used orange blossom in very large quantities, accompanied by neroli and petit grain, three raw materials that she loves to incorporate into her compositions. This trio is entirely derived from the bitter orange tree, since the petit grain is produced from the distillation of the twigs and leaves. The Symrise perfumer was able to craft this multi-faceted perfume by integrating Nérolione®, a powerful proprietary molecule evoking the scent of cleanliness that enhances the ultra-dosed orange blossom. So, is this new fragrance putting orange blossom on the spotlight rather than neroli? “BDK Parfums Villa Néroli is indeed more focused on orange blossom, but neroli is such a poetic-sounding word…I kept it for the name“, explains David Benedek.

The beautiful lagoon blue bottle might give the impression that BDK Parfums Villa Néroli is an eau de cologne but the concentration is at 25%, the same as eau de parfum. This is immediately noticeable on the skin. If at first I found it clean and cooling, just a few seconds later were enough to raise the temperature. I shared with Alexandra Carlin and David Benedek my first reaction in person; that I had perceived a powerful and bursting light, like a ray of sunshine reflecting in a bay window. Several weeks later, in addition I imagined a gastronomic interpretation: that of the mille-feuille, with varied textures, between the puff pastry finesse and the cream delicacy, all elaborated in mastered layers that mingle in perfect balance. Villa Néroli has an intense olfactory luminosity which is imparted by the neroli-Nerolione® duo with a fresh and tangy opening, where the juicy lemon and the crunchy and woody petit grain are also part of the game, all with rare power. Then comes the orange blossom absolute, round and carnal, with solar and honeyed facets, delicately softened by a fresh, almondy Bulgarian rose. This is the moment when my nose can no longer come off my wrist. BDK Parfums Villa Néroli oscillates between freshness, sensuality and purity, but always of an unstoppable luminosity. This back-and-forth impression goes on for long minutes, accentuating its astonishing power at the same time. But finally, I imagine myself reaching the peak of Monte Solaro, with a magnificent view and a deep blue sea! The sun is bright and I can hear the lapping of the water on the ancestral Etruscan rocks. I quickly fall asleep in the shade of an umbrella to wake up a few hours later at sunset. My skin warmed up with notes of vanilla and cistus labdanum, one of the most sensual alliances in perfumery, moving between balmy, suave and resinous facets. Orange blossom, neroli and petit grain are still perceptible, playing extra time. And if the drydown lowers the intensity, it does not decrease the temperature. The round, woody notes of vetiver and patchouli offer an ideal return to dry land, framed by the peaceful waves of the Tyrrhenian Sea. Night is falling and summer seems eternal.

BDK Parfums Villa Néroli is a true warm weather fragrance with a burnished brilliance, both fresh and carnal. Truly uninhibited. It smells of the sun, the sea, long walks on the beach at dusk: that’s what I call la dolce vita! It is also a fragrance that one will want to wear at the beginning of autumn, to still cling to the sweet memories of summer, and that one will be eager to wear again in spring, to bring faster on sunny days. Its power and its longevity are exceptional given its olfactory profile which could suggest yet another clean orange blossom. With each spritz I imagine myself in this Mediterranean paradise and wear it regularly since summer has settled in Paris. Villa Néroli is another successful collaboration between David Benedek and Alexandra Carlin.

Notes: Verdelli lemon (Calabria), neroli essence (Tunisia), Nérolione® (Symrise), petit grain essence (Paraguay), orange blossom absolute (Morocco), rose absolute (Bulgaria), vanilla absolute (Madagascar), vetiver (Madagascar), patchouli (Sulawesi), labdanum resinoid (Spain).

  • BDK Parfums Villa Néroli is inspired by David’s experiences in Capri. I have noticed many colognes and citrus creations take inspiration from the Mediterranean. Alexandra used the prototype she developed as a student and added gourmand touch to BDK Parfums Villa Néroli . I am in US.

Oh, I’m a huge fan of orange blossom! The review is so poetic. I feel like I’m already on vacation while reading this.
I like Gris Charnel from BDK the most, though I haven’t yet tried its extrait version.
    I live in Italy.

  • I feel that it’s a really great written review with a very big amount of details. The review is something really unique and beautiful. I don’t have a favorite BDK Parfums fragrance because I never tried anything from this brand but I am sure it would be something out of this world to try out this fragrance brand. I live in Poland, EU.

BDK is such an exciting house and this one sounds fantastic. Sounds like an excellent summer scent

  • I’ve never tried anything from BDK but this sounds incredible. I love the descriptions of the captive molecule Nerolione that we can’t smell ourselves. I am in the U.K.

  • I have never tried BDK Parfums so if I am lucky enough to win this draw, this will be wonderful to try it out. Emmanuelle has written a lovely review of this perfume. BDK Parfums Villa Néroli seems to be a very happy, energizing but also calm perfume – it has all the notes I love (Verdelli lemon (Calabria), neroli essence (Tunisia), Nérolione® (Symrise), petit grain essence (Paraguay), orange blossom absolute (Morocco), rose absolute (Bulgaria), vanilla absolute (Madagascar), vetiver (Madagascar), patchouli (Sulawesi), labdanum resinoid (Spain)). Thanks for the review and draw. I am from the USA.

  • Wow! Beautiful bottle and description. You had me at orange blossom and I really appreciated the description of neroli-Nerolione® as I had never heard of it! Love everything I’ve tried from BDK and this sounds like I’ll love this one too. In the US

  • realtyisme says:

Emmanuelle has allowed my sense of smell and my imagination to run wild as she describes the setting and sensations of this BDK creation. First and foremost, I am a Neroli fan. Second, I get a sense of a photo realistic orange garden in Capri with the citrus, orange blossom, and petit grain notes. With the added scents of vanilla and rose I can feel the depth. Vetiver, patchouli, and a labdanum base seem to provide a relaxing foundation which this creation rests upon. I own 9 other fragrances from BDK and each I find of the utmost quality. Looking forward to number 10 😉 I live in the US.

  • What I feel about this review is that it seems to accurately describe what one would expect from wearing Villa Neroli. I haven’t tried a BDK to have a fave. US

  • roxhas1cat says:

I love David’s description of his visit to Capri. I’ve never been, but am hoping as I got my first passport at the beginning of cove and still have not used it. The notes sound amazing. I love the blue bottles, but have not yet smelled any of those. My favorite is Smoking Rouge. Thanks for the chance. USA

  • Congratulations on winning your 2022 Best Fragrance award! My favorite BDK fragrance is Tabac Rose. I enjoyed reading about how Villa Neroli puts “orange blossom on the spotlight”. Thanks for another awesome review and draw. Mich USA

Love this brand and what David has created in such a short time period. i have already gris charnel which is a staple for life, but I also reall Enjoy tabac rose and creme de cuir. I haven’t tried yet Villa Neroli, but I love neroli in scents so it must be amazing!

Emmanuelle’s review of Villa Néroli is so gorgeously evocative of the experience of the perfume, and of how it links to the place it’s named after! I don’t own anything by BDK Parfums. But living in California, I absolutely LOVE the smell of an orange orchard in bloom and have been very slowly searching for The One — THE orange blossom fragrance that recreates that scent memory — and I wonder if Villa Néroli could be it. I live in the US.

  • I feel….excited to try this one. I will say I wish I had spent my young boy, childhood living in Capri. I have a few decants of various BDK fragrances. Creme de Cuir is one I definitely enjoyed, as well as Gris Charnel. I have not tried any from the blue bottle line, but really would like to sample Sel D’Argent. Thank you for the draw! NY, US.

  • Amber floral fragrance! Very fresh yet dark. Would love to try this. Would really perform in the summer.

I love the fact that neroli was an ingredient simply because of the beauty of the name!! That point of gravitation and inspiration for that reason has me in awe! It reminds me of building an outfit off of a great pair of shoes, it’s just works!

Also, the notes in this fragrance sound like an amazing combination especially tied back to the things that inspired the scent. A recipe for success!

Oh wooow! I can imagine the place, state and a matching scent while reading this review. As a big fan of BDK brand I would love to win this new release. Honestly can’t wait to smell it as it sounds like a perfect summer in a bottle. So far my favorites are Gris Charnel (both of them ) and Velvet Tonka. The fact that this perfume is a product of a collaboration between David Benedek and Alexandra Carlin (as is one of my favorites) makes me even more excited about the possibility to discover this fragrance. Thank you for the review and the opportunity to win the bottle. Austria, EU

  • BDK Villa Neroli sounds amazing. The review made me think of Italy and all the wonderful smells. Love the cool blue color that slowly turns into a warm scent on the skin. This is perfect for Summertime. Thank you for this Chance USA

  • Really interesting review for a perfume I did not know, but it seems on spot for this summer.
I love the smell of the mediterranean coast and being italian, it feels like home.
Big fan of neroli and orange blossom…in this fragrance there seem to be a lot of naturals and absolutes.
I’ve never tried anything from BDK….hope this is the time!

I always Neroli to be one of those “natural smelling” notes. It gives off this aromatic, fruity in the sun vibe. Gorgeous. BDK Parfums have outdone themselves with this one, can’t wait to try it! EU

  • I could envision what vacation in Capri would be like! I hope to go someday. This fragrance sounds beautiful, and I would love to try another one of Alexandra’s creations as Velvet Tonka is my favorite from the BDK line. From TX, USA.

  • This review made me feel like I was baking in the sun, and also made me feel like racing off the Capri to ind those bitter orange trees myself. What an evocative review! Thank you for sharing, writing from the EU.

  • Nice review Emmanuelle! Even I am from another side of the Mediterranean Sea, I can relate to David Benedek´s desire to make a collection as tribute where he spent happy days of his childhood. The memories are unforgettable and the translation into a scent a way to recover it. Here in Villa Neroli we feel a “solar joy, between optimism and serenity”: An invitation to live the dolce vita. Alexandra Carlin has the orange blossom as starting point, not the fresh and citrusy, but a sensual, heady, narcotic.. when you smell a orange blossom it is an amazing sensation. She gets neroli and petitgrain to conform the triad derived from the bitter orange tree (Humm, a garden in Seville too). Here we have a WOW concentration of 25%!! and an amazing use of the molecule Neriolone! the scent is fresh, sensual, pure and amazingly luminose! : sun, sea, long walks on the beach at dusk , la dolce vita that Emmanuelle related the perfume! I haven´t had the chance of trying any BDK perfume yet! I live in Spain, EU.

  • I want a bottle after reading Emmanuelle’s review of Villa Néroli. BDK is a favorite house. I’ve been wearing Pas Ce Soir a lot this summer (although I was inspired to wear Gris Charnel on a hot day last week and didn’t regret it). I’m also excited to read Ambre Safrano will be offered worldwide soon! So many exciting things coming from BDK! ~ I live in Indiana

  • I love the notes of orange blossom and Neroli, I am a huge fan of citrus. I likes Emmanuelle description of the fragrance and the indepth information about how the perfumer and owner of the house collaborated foe this scent and the perfumers love for the trio of neroli, orange blossom and peti grain which she tries to include in all her scents. I would love to try this creation that bottles the feeling of being in Capri. I live in the USA

  • What a gorgeous review! I love the way perfume can transport you anywhere, right where you stand. These notes sound like sunshine in a bottle: a fresh and tangy opening, where the juicy lemon and the crunchy and woody petit grain are also part of the game, all with rare power. Then comes the orange blossom absolute, round and carnal, with solar and honeyed facets, delicately softened by a fresh, almondy Bulgarian rose. I’m in the USA, thank you!

I was fascinated especially by Emmanuelle’s discussion of Nerolione, which I had never heard of before. This scent sounds both assertive and subtle at the same time, offering different facets of its citrus base. I love her use of the mille-feuille as a metaphor for how the fragrance works. I am in the US, in North Carolina.

  • Nikolina_84 says:

I would love, love to win BDK Villa Neroli to get that worryless Capri feeling. I imagine it to be like heaven.I feel like this is a perfect summer scent. I dream about visiting Italy…didn’t had the chance until now. I live in London, UK.

  • Excellent description of the scent, and interesting story about it’s creation. I love Gris Charnel extrait and Rouge Smoking from BDK. NV, USA.

  • I like this house’s DNA and I am curious on how they interpret a more summery fragrance.
    Many thanks from the EU!

  • I like the beautiful lagoon blue bottle and high concentration at 25% which is not typical for neroli scents. Never smelled this brand, but I like the perfumer’s Alexandra Carlin work. I am from EU.

  • Thanks for the review Emmanuelle!

Italy has been one of my favourite holiday locations for years. it is one of the reasons my love for Acqua Di Parma fragrances. It’s the fresh and clean, citrus and aromatic scents that I enjoy the most in my perfumes becausee they bring me back to the Amalfi and Sicilian coasts.

When you say that BDK Parfums Villa Néroli oscillates between freshness, sensuality and purity, but always of an unstoppable luminosity I am quite intrigued and hope to be able to try it soon!

I have not tried any fragrances from the BDK Parfums collection yet, but my partner has Velvet Tonka added to her birthday wishlist so we will be ordering a discovery set soon to get an intrduction to their luxurious fragrances.

    Greetings from the UK!

  • This fragrance by BDK is exactly what I’ve been looking for and in Tennessee we’re going to have an extended summer probably all the way through October so I have plenty of time to still wear it in season. The blend of citrus with the patchouly and the vetiver Just sounds perfect. Tennessee, USA. Thank you

  • What a beautiful summer gem!
The neroli and citrus followed by almondy rose sounds like the stuff of dreams. Indeed, Villa Neroli seems like an all-year round moodlifter which still definitely blooms in the warmer weather, ideally on a lovely secluded Mediterranean beach.
    I live in the EU.

  • BDK is a fantastic house! I have 5 different fragrances from them and truly enjoy each one. To me, I find their fragrances unique in the way they stand out and don’t remind me of anything. Villa Neroli will be another hit from the house and I look forward to trying it! My favorite is Gris Charnel, and I have yet to try the extrait of it. Thank you so much for the giveaway and good luck to everyone!

Villa Neroli sounds like Mediterranean summer in a bottle. The provenance of the ingredients is exceptional. The quality is evident as reflected in Emmanuelle’s review. I find it interesting that it’s termed an eau de cologne but has a 25% eau de parfum strength. I would love to smell this citrusy ode to Capri. MD, USA.

  • I really enjoyed this review because I think that it reflects the summer of Italy. I think that BDK make truly summer gems, like Sel d’Argent. I love neroli fragrances and I think this would be ideal for my summers. I hope to try it soon.

  • I adore Neroli dominant fragrances. And I love the quote “BDK Parfums Villa Néroli oscillates between freshness, sensuality and purity, but always of an unstoppable luminosity.” This sounds like such an incredible blend of notes that are both fresh and earthy. I’ve never tried anything from BDK Parfums and would be so honored to have this one be my first.

  • Through BDK Parfums Villa Neroli people outside of Italy can learn about the city of Naples , and its rich urban culture , historical sightseeings , and the importance of the Faraglioni, thousand-year-old rocks for the local community.
After reading Emmanuelle Varron take on Villa Neroli , I imagined making Honey Orange Blossom Bundt Cake , and later sharing it with friends , while sitting right next to the ocean and the Faraglioni rocks . The cake is moist with just about right amount of tang and sweetness , just like Villa Neroli
My favorite BDK Parfums is Gris Charnel, I sampled it because of Olya Bar review for Cafleurebon . From the very first spray , my girlfriend loved the way it smells, and I bought her a bottle. Smells like Cardamom Fig Cake i do on regular basis in my bakery , and black tea

An amazing review from Emmanuelle! I love how she depicts her idea of la dolce vita, it is just beyond appealing! The fact that Villa Néroli is a reminder of David Benedek’s happy childhood days only adds to the charm of the story and the fragrance. I could almost get whiffs of the fragrance the bigaradiers give off in the alleys of Capri. The notes in the composition are amazing, a perfume radiating “freshness, sensuality and purity, but always of an unstoppable luminosity” is like the ultimate dream of summer. The color of the bottle is the perfect representation of the waters surrounding Capri and I felt hypnotized the moment I saw it. Thanks again for the draw and the smile reading about Villa Néroli brings to my face. I have not tried any of the BDK Parfums fragrances but I have been particularly attracted to Rouge Smoking and Velvet Tonka. I am based in the EU

Thanks for the great writeup Emmanuelle. I love the imagery that this fragrance portrays and the presentation of the fragrance – that blue color was stunning.

I was very much hoping that this fragrance would be a chypre and going over the notes, it seems like my hopes might be on the right track. I would love to get my nose on this and take an olfactive journey to Capri with this.

    Cheers from WI, USA

  • I love the smell of oranges. It’s a sweeter smell than I normally enjoy wearing, but something about that note just makes me happy, especially combined with solar citruses and invigorating notes. The orange blossom, petit grain, and Nérolione® bitter orange tree combo in Villa Néroli is really interesting, especially combined with some rose, resinous vanilla, and labdanum. This sounds like the warm light of late summer distilled and bottled. Thanks for the great review Emmanuelle!

I’m in the midwest, USA. I haven’t tried any BDK Parfums fragrances.

  • I’ve been to Naples a couple of times, and to Piazza Dante and The Royal Palace of Capodimonte , the Palace especially I’ll never forget.
Never been to Capri , or seen its natural beauty, and the monumental Faraglioni rocks, but I think Villa Neroli is posh and delicious Italian cologne, with decent performance, and some dose of Napolitano passion in a bottle.
Rouge Smoking is the only BDK Parfums i know. Complex and alluring fragrance , with tart sour cherries, pink pepper, lots of vanilla, slightly musky smell.
    Thanks for the draw

  • I can feel Emmanuelle’s enthusiasm for Villa Neroli by BDK. A tribute to the Mediterranean region focused on orange blossom. A fragrance that “oscillates between freshness, sensuality and purity but always of an unstoppable luminosity.”
Sounds like a summer fragrance that I can wear into the fall season that is fresh and carnal and sensual. Villa Neroli seems like a beautiful new fragrance.
My favorite BDK parfums fragrance is Gris Charnel.
    Maryland, US.

  • I love how every ingredient came from a different place but it all comes together to form one complete scent. I live in Colorado, US and my favorite fragance from BDK that I’ve tried is Velvet Tonka.

I loved Emmanuelle’s review of BDK Parfums Villa Néroli. Inspired by the beautiful scenery and oceanside of Capri talented perfumer Alexandra Carlin. I loved learning about Nerolidone a synthetic molecule that smells like Orange Blossom. This sounds like a beautiful fresh floral, airy, and bright fragrance encapsulated in the fitting bright blue bottle. My favorite BDK Parfums fragrance is Wood Jasmin. I am from the USA.

  • i like houses that release high concertation fragrances, 25% is amazing. I believe this release would be an ideal option for summer as it was inspired by Capri. In general I enjoy neroli but it is not easy to find long-lasting ones. I would lobe to give this a try. I am from Greece,EU

  • Regis Monkton says:

I’ve only tried one BDK Parfums fragrance release so far and it is “Sel d’Argent”, which has a good orange blossom note to it, but it might not include neroli. I’ve become fond of neroli-prominent fragrances and I like when they include orange blossom. I’m interested to see what the Nerolione is like, and in combination with the neroli essence, the Bulgarian rose, and the orange blossom. I live in the U.S.A.

All the hype surrounding BDK Parfums is well deserved. I’m well familiar with all, except for
    Ambre Safrano
If I have to rate my favorite BDK Parfums:
    1. Tabac Rose
    2. Rouge Smoking
    3. Gris Charnel Extrait
All three are fantastic, Tabac Rose i own.

“Ambre Safrano will soon be available worldwide, after a one-year exclusivity at Harrods.”
    Finally ! Great news

“round and carnal” + “fresh and carnal”

Round and fresh yes , but at no point of the fragrance development i get something even slightly carnal, not on my skin at least.
To me Villa Néroli opening is welcoming lemon and neroli, with subtle sweetness combination. Soon after the spicy, slightly peppery rose comes to play, and little by little the fragrance becomes sweeter and thicker , with pronounced vanilla, patchouli and vetiver.
I’m not sure if the Mille-feuille dessert Emmanuelle mentioned contains orange blossom, but the sweetness in Villa Néroli smells like orange blossom dessert to me.
Napolitano are built differently you know, they are louder, more expressive, going there Is like going to a country, within the country. Good friend of mine, Napolitano living in Texas once said “People in Napoli for Italy, are what Texans are for USA” .
Maybe that’s the Napolitano flair Alexandra Carlin and David Benedek were looking for, when creating Villa Néroli

  • Naples, fine Aglianico , Casavecchia , Piedirosso, Pallagrello Nero grapes and lovely wine from the region , rich culture, heritage, beautiful area, coffee,I love it.
Patchouli, sea , woods , rose and juicy Calabrian lemon , bag of neroli – romantic vacation in Capri came to mind.
The slightly carnal feel , and the mille-feuilleis sweetness was unexpected, but so welcome .
Alexandra Carlin is really talented, I also know her work for other brands like Amouage
Bdk i discovered earlier this year , according to my initial impressions from the samples Velvet Tonka, Tabac Rose and Rouge Smoking i like the most.
    Thank you for the opportunity
