Perfume Shopping in New York City 2025

ÇaFleureBon Guide to Perfume Shopping in New York City 2025

Toward the end of last year, there was an uptick in store openings, which only accelerated into the new year. Every neighborhood in the city, from Harlem to the Financial District, delights fragrance enthusiasts. Notable launches: Naked Ghosts opened, offering a selection of niche Eaux curated by master perfumer Christophe Laudamiel, whose own fragrances are also available for purchase. And just like that, Estée Lauder opened four boutiques side by side on Prince Street: Kilian Paris, Jo Malone, Tom Ford, and Frederic Malle. So along with Penhaligon’s, Granado, Diptyque, and Mizensir. Prince Street is vying with Elizabeth Street for the title of NYC’s scent district. Brooklyn’s Stéle opened its second store on Mott Street. Parfums de Marly opened its second boutique on the Upper East Side. In Midtown, Aesop, Trudon, and Creed opened boutiques in Rockefeller Plaza, right in the shadows of Saks Fifth Avenue. French department store Printemps opened Printemps NYC in the Financial District in March. The two-story, 54,365-square-foot store is designed to evoke the feeling of a Parisian apartment. And Frederic Malle left its long-time location on 73rd Street to move further uptown with a much heralded makeover. Looking ahead, Guerlain will soon unveil its Park Avenue Fragrance Boutique in the newly reopened historic Waldorf Astoria. And, Scent Bar is scheduled to open a Brooklyn location in March. Perfume shopping in New York City has never been better.

Bertrand Duchaufour composed Aedes de Venustas café Tabac

Bertrand Duchaufour at the Cigar Factory

Café Tabac composed by Bertrand Duchaufour, was inspired by the iconic 90s bar in the East Village. This sensual wonder, which was one of my 2023 Top Ten Fragrances of the Year, has numerous expected and unexpected twists that all pay homage to tobacco. Wearing it feels like playing three-dimensional chess.-Hernando

Bertrand Duchaufour working again with Aedes Perfumery co-owners Robert Gerstner and Karl Bradl ties its initial inspiration’s East Village homage with an unrelated, if serendipitous, visit by Duchaufour and Gerstner to a Dominican Republic cigar factory. Michelyn

Notes: Tobacco absolute, Peru balm, cardamom, clove, bergamot, tamarind, tar, dried date, dried fig, cacao accord, burnt sugar, mango, beeswax absolute, apple, davana, clary sagevanilla, oakmoss, cistus-labdanum absolute, tonka bean, cedar wood, ambergris, cade.

  • I visited Aedes in the summer of 2006 with my fellow perfume blogger. It was magical. NYC has so much to offer these days but would love to have a Parfum D’Empire store!

  • From the list I have visited Bloomingdales, Macy’s, Dossier Brooklyn, Sephora, Space NK, and Tom Ford. Some of my favorite perfume shops that would be great in NYC are Parisian: L’Artisan Parfumeur, Atelier Cologne, Frederic Malle, Fragonard, Serge Lutens and Annick Goutal’s are some of my favorites.
    USA

  • Frédéric Malle on Madison Avenue. I’m not sure if links are allowed here, but if you Google “Frédéric Malle Architectural Digest,” you’ll find a great article from about 15 years ago featuring his Madison Avenue apartment. Aside from sharing the same street, it has nothing to do with the newly designed boutique, but it’s a fascinating glimpse into his eclectic taste. I’m in the US.

  • I would really love to have Dusita set up a boutique in NYC. Maybe someday? 🙂

I’d like to go to Aedes because after reading about so many of their fragrances over the years I feel like I know them. Also, The Modern Chemist is somewhere I’m curious about. In the USA.

  • I don’t live in the area but Penhaligon’s is top of my wish list! I’ve ordered so many samples from them, and yet somehow there’s always more to try.

  • I would love to visit Krigler! Top of my list next time I’m in NYC. Also would visit Penhaligon’s and Santa Maria Novella. USA

  • As an understatement this is useful. I’ve visited Scentbar Mizensir Diptyque and D.S. & Durga, during work trips to the City. Been meaning to get to Osswald Penhaligon’s, and Aedes. I’ve only recently learned of Stele and do want to visit there. I’ve also visited Printemps NYC. As for what brand needs to open boutique in NYC, I think Nicolai Parfumeur Createur should be here.

    I’m in the US.

  • Brad Woolslayer says:

I would love to check out Aedes Perfumery and Bond no. 9. Both houses have many fragrances that I enjoy wearing. I would love to smell how Aedes Perfumery used the note of tobacco in their fragrance Cafe Tabac. I live in Maryland USA.

  • Ramses Perez says:

Hot off the press: not sure if you are familiar with the online retailer MaxAroma but they will soon open a new boutique in SoHo (late December to early January). I’m very much looking forward to the Guerlain boutique opening next year as I have developed a deep love for some of their fragrances. New York is truly becoming a fragrance destination and I’m happy it’s close enough to me so take a day trip there and come back smelling impeccable. I think it’s only a matter of time until an Arabic house sees an opportunity and opens a boutique in New York, very sought after. Cafe Tabac looks like an exquisite, elegant and elevated tobacco and coffee fragrance with some sweetness on the background. This doesn’t give me the feeling it’s another cloying gourmand but rather a more refined coffee scent centering around a tropical getaway to an exotic island. Much thanks for the giveaway as always. I’m located in the USA.

  • I would love to visit the Le Labo store in NYC and also the Creed boutique. I am going to NYC for the first time next month and those are the first to spots on my list

  • reyessence89 says:

I’ve never been to NYC!!! But would hit as many perfume places if I ever make it there. I bet I’d be like a kid in a candy store in Printemps NYC! I would like Les Senteurs and Jovoy and Bloom to open a shop in NYC. My scent of the evening is the tobacco-forward Royal Bourbon from Plume Impression. And I have Kingdom Scotland METAMORPHIC on my left wrist. So, yes, I love love love tobacco scents.

  • crownroyale47 says:

I’m a regular at the Kilian Boutique (even after they moved locations), Bergdorf Goodman, and Saks 5th Ave. Being in NY, I think we have everything anyone could as for.

  • Next time I’m in New York, I’ll be sure to visit the Amaffi Perfume House to enjoy their Intrigant, Hot Heart, and Havana fragrances, which are more than just scents—they hold heartfelt emotion and promise to be the scented companions to precious memories yet to unfold. I’ll also spend time at the Creed Boutique, the home of my enduring signature scent. While Roja Parfums can be found at Bergdorf Goodman or Neiman Marcus, I sincerely hope they open a dedicated shoppe in the city to offer a more intimate and immersive experience. As for other international boutiques, I’d love to see more niche houses from across Europe or the Middle East establish a presence in NYC, enriching the city’s already vibrant fragrance scene.

    – USA –

  • I was just in NYC early November… I went to Scentbar, Dossier and Bigelow. Definitely want to go to Stele next I’m there. I was just in Budapest, and think Superz has a Manhattan vibe. My other loves at the moment, that would be good in nyc are Frau Tonis from Berlin, and Zilenski+Rozen with several boutiques around the EU.

  • What I like about this NYC guide is that it treats perfume shopping like a whole-city experience, not just a list of stores. It really makes me want to plan a trip where the focus is just walking neighborhoods and discovering scent, instead of squeezing perfume stops in between other plans.

I live in Phoenix, so the closest “scent city” I actually get to is Los Angeles, where I visited Scent Bar and ended up walking out with a bottle of Amouage Reflection Man that I still reach for all the time. Reading this guide makes me want to do the same thing in New York one day, just get lost in the city with this list as my map.

Of course I live in the USA haha

  • I’ve never been perfume shopping in New York City, unfortunately. I would definitely love to go to the new Guerlain boutique Park Avenue mentioned opening soon. Aedes Perfumery has always sounded like a cool spot to check out if able as well. Also boutiques like Celine, Dior Chanel, or the big department stores. As far as a shop overseas opening here, perhaps Jovoy. Thanks for the generous draw, from the US.

  • That was a long, very long list of shops. And I haven’t been to a single one. So any would be a welcome experience if the chance arose. US

  • I haven’t been to any of the NYC locations listed here! I would want to visit Diptyque and Le Labo.Clearly I need to schedule a NYC visit!

    USA

  • Wow! What a list. I have visited exactly 0 of the stores on this list, and probably won’t be going to New York anytime soon. But I would love to try Cafe Tabac. I did haunt the city quite a bit. The places I frequented were Scrap Bar, 7A and the Continental. I am very thankful that there are no fragrances created asan homage to those places! I am in the US.

  • goknitintheocean says:

    Hi there,

I am long overdue for a return to Aedes, and have visited Scent Bar, LUSH, and Maison10 recently(love them all)! My wish list would be a tally of countries/regions I’d like to see establish scent boutiques, here in New York. They would include Italy, Mexico/Central America, Australia, and the Scandinavian countries including Iceland. I know this sounds nuts, but it really would be delightful! Thank you for this drawing. I am in NYC/USA.

    Warmly,
    Deborah

  • Whoa, this is a vast list, and yes, I read all of it. Great job to the Editor and Hernando for posting this since 2017; I am sure it has aided many in finding the perfect fragrance shopping experience. I have on a wish list to visit when I visit NYC: Etro, Granado. Oh, I think a Jovoy NY would be marvelous. I am in the USA.

  • I always visit fragrance stores when I travel. I find it a great way to experience a different country or region. It’s been a while since I was in NYC but I do recognize quite a few shops on the list including the Blue Mercury store and Olfactory NYC. Very comprehensive for those planning to visit. Although I haven’t visited Aedes, I have sampled Cafe Tabac and it is a great choice for the holiday season. MD, USA

  • I love Aedes des Venustas, I just wore Copal Azur yesterday actually. Iris Nazarene, Corfu Kumquat and Oeillet Brngale are lovely too. I havent tried the Tabac but I’ve been wanting too! This is such a great list year round and I appreciate the update each year. Thank you for the generous giveaway. I am in the U.S.

  • hautebrother says:

Great job as always! NYC is certainly one of retail icons around the globe. I’ve visited Aedes de Venustas, CO Bigelow, Creed, Frederic Malle, Amaffi (so expensive!), Le Labo, Diptyque, Scent Bar, Santa Maria Novella, Sak’s, Bergdorf (amazing scent counters), L’Occitane, and Kiehl’s. I used to work at The Body Shop back on Madison & 52nd! So many places and so little time. NYC has all bases covered…seriously all bases. If I was to be all the way greedy, I would say a Jovoy NYC so I could have access to some brands that are unavailable in the states like the new Ropion line. Thank you Robert and Karl!! I own Iris Nazarena and would love to add Cafe Tabac to my collection!!
    Brooklyn!!

  • rachel wiener says:

I feel so lucky to live in NY as a perfume lover, there’s just so many incredible shops to visit and smell stuff from all over the globe! I’ve visited a lot of these but barely scratched the surface. My go-to’s are Scent Bar (shout out to Rose and all the lovely staff there!) and Bergdorf Goodman. My dream would be Serge Lutens opening a store here, it’s a crime that they pulled out of the US . Would love to win Cafe Tabac as Bertrand is one of my favorite perfumers of all time. In Brooklyn, NY

  • I’ve never been to NYC and after reading this extensive list of shops that I had no idea were so prevalent in the city my wallet is probably safer if I keep it that way haha. I would like to check out Stéle if I was ever to visit NYC. I’m in the USA

  • Wow, such a great list of beautiful shops! Such a profound research! I visited almost all from the list, except those newly opened in the Rockefeller Center. And what brands I would really love love love to have their own boutiques in New York are:
    – Pierre Guillaume
    – Pinewood
    – Slumberhouse
    – Dusita
    – Aphorismes by Dominique Ropion
    – Parfum d’Empire
    – Anthologie Parfums by Lucien Ferrero
    – 1907
    – Meo Fusciuni
    – Filippo Sorcinelli

I have been to the Diptyque store, but wasn’t able to makes it to Aedes during last year’s Christmas trip. This year, we pre-planned our days so that I could finally go. After being a collector for over 15 years and ordering from them online many times, I can’t wait to finally get to see it. It’s almost like a religious pilgrimage at this point. I live in TN in the US. Thank you for Aedes for this opportunity to win!

  • These annual NYC shopping lists are always astounding. If you’re into fragrance, there are so many options available to you; lots to smell without needing to order samples. Naked Ghosts sounds particulary cool—I’ve enjoyed many of Laudamiel’s fragrances—and Aedes Perfumery seems like a must-visit. I’m sure the new Scent Bar will be a fun visit too. I haven’t had a chance to visit NYC, but when I do, I’ll seek out these. And as for boutiques from other countries, Heaven Scent Oslo and Crime Passionel Copenhagen are both wonderful and would be a notable addition to NYC.

I’m in the USA. Thanks for the giveaway—would love to try Café Tabac!

  • I visited the Brooklyn Stéle location in February, sadly left empty-handed but it was fun to sniff around. Next time I go to NYC I’m sure I’ll want to pop into a perfume store again, I’d like to visit Scent Bar because I do like being able to peruse many perfumeries under one roof. Seeing the huge list of boutiques puts into perspective the crazy amount of choice you have when shopping in NYC… just boggles the mind, considering how the fairly slim pickings in most other metro areas. I am in the USA, thank you for the draw.

  • I have visited Aedes original store on few occasions and it was a total gem. Big fan of their collection and big fan of Bertrand Duchaufour scents, starting with Dzonghka. I also loved visiting Enfleurage and Frederic Malle stores and by luck got to talk to Monsieur Malle himself when I went there. I am in the US. Thanks so much for the draw!

  • foreverscents says:

I love shopping for fragrances in NYC. There are so many options and it’s easy to be overwhelmed. I love Aedes, Bergdorf Goodman, The Scent Bar and all the perfume boutiques in the West Village. I am looking forward to visiting Stele and Naked Ghosts. I wish Lush would open a dedicated perfume shop, like the Library they have in London.
    I live in the USA.

  • Cafe Tabac is gorgeous, I didn’t realize it was on Hernando’s top list. What a nice giveaway. I’m blown away about how many shops. My town just opened its 3rd niche perfume shop and the only department store with a semi decent selection is Nordstrom. thanks for the chance. USA.

  • My favorite one stop shop for niche brands are stele and scent bar apart from the department stores. Would have loved to see others from UK /Framce like jovoy and Les senteurs here as well. Live in NYC USA
