Profiles In American Perfumery: Darren Alan of Darren Alan Perfumes + Nature and Neo Vintage Giveaway

Darren Alan of Darren Alan Perfumes

Darren Alan of Darren Alan Perfumes

Profile: I was born Darren Alan White on March 11, 1971 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. My scent journey started quite young. I remember as a child, I would smell everything regardless of if it had an apparent smell to others or not. I was the weird kid that enjoyed smelling the wrapping paper on his Christmas presents as much as I enjoyed opening them. And there was always lots to smell. I spent many summer days in my grandparents’ garden learning about plants and flowers. They had a huge back yard with a vegetable garden, fruit trees, flowering bushes such as lilac, honeysuckle & hydrangea, as well as flowers galore. My grandmother spent many hours teaching me about plants and flowers, telling me their names and letting me smell and experience each and every one. My nose was in heaven!

My mother had a flower garden as well and is an amazing cook. She taught me all I know about cooking, herbs and spices…how to balance flavors and add certain ingredients into a dish not so much for their own flavor, but to bring out the flavor of something else…this eventually became very useful knowledge for perfumery! My best friend growing up was (and still is) my sister Kimberly. Although she is four years my younger, we were best friends and ardent nature adventurers. We would go on long walks in the woods and discover all types of strange plants that we had never seen before. Sometimes we would run into the rogue wild blackberry bush that was heavy with fruit and we would snack on fresh berries in the warm summer heat. My mother started selling Avon at one point and had bags and bags of tiny samples for her customers. Samples of lipsticks, and eyeshadows and yep, you guessed it… PERFUME! My sister and I would test out these tiny vials and I was in my glory as I would mix together my own custom scents from these samples. In my mind I was creating such masterpieces! I’m sure if I were to smell them today, they would have been quite horrid. But as a child they sparked my creative imagination. I never thought of perfumery as a possible career, I just always enjoyed fragrances and mixing different smells together.

As I grew up, my love of fragrance continued to be present in the background. While it was something I always privately enjoyed, it wasn’t something I thought of at the time as a skill to be developed – unlike music. I grew up in a very musical household. My grandfather was a musician and had conducted his own orchestra. My mother trained classically as a singer, and I grew up taking piano lessons. I can’t remember when I started taking piano lessons…it feels like I never was not taking them.

Darren Alan of Darren Allen Perfumes was a performer

Darren performing the role of Frederic in Gilbert & Sullivan’s “The Pirates of Penzance”

When I reached my High School years, I branched out my musical skills and tried my hand at singing. I joined the school choir and performed in the school musicals, and this became my new passion. I started studying private voice and discovered my love for opera. I decided I wanted to share my love of music with others by performing and teaching music. I enrolled in the Music Education program at Duquesne University in Pittsburgh, PA with a major in voice. After graduating I went on to perform with the Pittsburgh Opera and took a position as adjunct faculty at Point Park College (now Point Park University) teaching private voice while working on my Masters Degree in Voice Performance and Opera at Duquesne. I continued singing and performing with the opera as I took on a position teaching elementary school music and chorus at a public school here in Pittsburgh. I am now still teaching middle and high school music and chorus at the same school district and every day is an adventure and a joy!

It was around the mid 1990s that I started to get back into fragrance. While I had always enjoyed wearing fragrance, I started to acquire a small collection of essential oils and started reading books on Aromatherapy. At this time there was not much information available online about Aromatherapy or Perfumery. I kept learning and smelling, and I took a correspondence course on Aromatherapy with the Tisserand Institute. My passion for fragrance had been revived. I soon realized that my passion for Aromatherapy didn’t lie in the therapeutic aspect of it so much as it did in the scent alone. Most of my aromatherapy blends ended up turning into natural perfumes, yet there was always some aspect that was lacking. Although the Internet was still in its infancy at the time, I stumbled across a website called The Good Scents Company. It was a veritable font of perfumery knowledge and I felt like I had hit the jackpot! Bill Luebke, the founder of The Good Scents Company was selling perfumery raw materials at the time. I called him and asked what beginner aromachemicals I should purchase to study perfumery. He was so kind and generous with his time, and he set me up with a starter kit of around 100 materials. He eventually became my mentor and spent countless hours on the phone with me, guiding me and deepening my interest in the sourcing and evaluation of raw materials for perfumery. I am forever grateful for his knowledge and inspiration.

In 2005 I started a small business called Pure Skin Formulations, LLC. I was making handmade skincare and personal care products scented with essential oils. I also had a small line of perfumes branded under that name. As my business grew, I continued to study perfumery. I took classes and workshops and studied some of the great perfume formulas such as the famous Chypres by Coty, Guerlain and Millot. I became obsessed with vintage style perfumery and as I smelled some of these vintage gems, their fragrance triggered the realization that I had smelled these growing up. These were perfumes worn by my grandmother and mother!

As my perfume business grew, it became difficult for me to continue making the skincare products while still teaching music full time. During the pandemic in 2020 the supply chain issues became an insurmountable challenge to contend with, and I shifted my efforts away from skincare and began to focus solely on fragrance. I rebranded my fragrance line under the name Darren Alan Perfumes and here we are. I am constantly still learning…I still take perfumery classes and workshops. As a professional educator of over 25 years, I realize that one never stops learning, and my inquisitive mind is never satisfied. I enjoy sharing my passion for perfume with others, which is why I offer perfumery workshops and classes. I have a Young Perfumers Club where I give free perfume making workshops to teenage students and to see their eyes light up when blending their first perfume is a joy to behold!

My style of perfumery is a mixed bag of neo-vintage and fragrances inspired by nature. While I do not consider myself an entirely natural perfumer, many of my fragrances are comprised of mostly natural materials and inspired by the smells of nature. I often take inspiration from nature walks and hikes, which can be seen in some of my creations such as “After The Rain” and “Hekate”.

On American Perfumery: My thoughts on American Perfumery echo my thoughts on America in general. It is a place of great opportunity where everyone can pursue their passions and with hard work, can shape their own destiny. As an independent perfumer, I feel lucky to be living in the USA and pursuing my perfumery here. There are a lot less restrictions here in the USA in terms of buying raw materials, ethanol and licensing. It’s a bit like the Wild West to be honest! While I do follow IFRA standards and cGMP guidelines, the lack of restrictive oversight I feel offers more opportunity for new perfumers to enter into the world of perfumery.

Favorite American Artist: My favorite American Artist is American musician & composer Philip Glass. I am enchanted by his music and impressed by his use of serialism and minimalism. Listening to his music reminds me that there is beauty in simplicity, and I quite often listen to his music while composing perfumes, as it helps to quiet and free my mind for creating.

  • It was interesting to find out that Darren got into fragrances at a young age when he and his sister would test out tiny vials of fragrances acquired from his mothers Avon collection and would mix them together to create custom scents. Many of his fragrances are comprised of mostly natural materials and inspired by the scents of nature. If I had to pick one it would be the perfume. Thank you for the opportunity. New York, USA.

  • I am always fascinated by the leap from enjoying the fragrances, to making them. And, especially someone who is ‘self-taught’!!
I am in the US and am interested in Jonquille

  • I absolutely love Darren’s work! His fragrances are what turned me into a vintage lover. From Chypre No. 1 and Dorian’s Fougere to my favorite, Fetes de Noel, there is not a scent in his lineup that fails to impress. I have researched a bit about his history, but only knew a few small details. I really enjoyed learning more about him and his journey to becoming a perfumer. I also really love the fact that he teaches music and offers perfume workshops to young individuals. That is true passion right there. Regarding the giveaway, I would have to go with Jonquille. I have a travel spray of it that has almost run dry and would love to have a full bottle to replace it with. Best of luck to everyone. I live in NC, USA.

  • Pittsburgh! You’re practically a neighbor, Darren! I am very interested in how you both give (going to look those up) and take classes- I think that is a great part of your journey to be on.

  • I’m not entering, because I’m not from USA. I just wanted to say that such and interesting and nice path to perfumery Darren Alen had. And that photo with he and his sister together is so beautiful. That is such a great thing if siblings love each other so much.

  • I love that Darren offers perfumery workshops for teens! I wish something like that had been available to me in my youth.

  • FragranceIsMe says:

Darren, thanks for allowing us to enjoy the journey of your life and how you came into the olfactory world. I’m so glad you did. I hope in the future you are able to hold a class in the Philadelphia area. I’ll be sure to be in attendance. Should I be lucky and win the giveaway, my choice would be Jonquille.

Seconding others that this is such a touching article — such an idyllic image of childhood (the blackberries!) & I very much love the the story about how generous Bill Luebke was for Darren.

I’d love to enter for the draw for the discovery set — the notes for After the Rain & Hekate & so many of the other scents sound so wonderful & I would love to spend time with them all.

    Best wishes, from Massachussetts.

  • Wow. This is my first introduction to Daren Allen. I find the story of his creative adventure from music to perfumery inspiring. His perfumes seem right up my ally with a vintage twist and emphasis on natural. I love what he said about American Perfumery being the wild west. I totally agree. I am in the US. The discovery set sounds to me!

  • Regis Monkton says:

Within the past couple of years, I’ve become very intrigued to try some the fragrances from Darren Alan Perfumes, and now I’m interested to try his collected works. If I win the giveaway, then I’d definitely choose the discovery set, so that way I could try “Dorian’s Fougere”, “Jonquille”, “Chypre No. 1”, and more. I want to try his fragrances because of his experience with vintage fragrances. I like Rogue Perfumery, and I imagine that Darren Alan is another one who can make high-quality vintage-style fragrances. I’d like to see what his fragrances inspired by nature are like. I live in MD, U.S.A.

Great to hear about Darren’s journey. Amazing how his childhood was a huge influence in what he does today. His curiosity, being in his grandmother’s and mother’s garden. Learning to cook and putting the ingredients together to then his love for music is all pretty incredible.

I’ve heard great things about Darren Alan Perfumes but have yet to try any of them. I would go for the 14 piece Discovery Set. Thanks

  • I have heard nothing but glowing things about Darren Alan and his creations for at least a year! It’s great hearing about the perfumers journey in his own words. I really admire that he teaches young people about perfumery as that’s something I wish I had been exposed to in my youth. I want to try everything so I’d have to choose the discovery set. Cheers from Brooklyn, Ny.

  • Brad Woolslayer says:

I was excited to hear that Darren was born in Pittsburgh, which is the area where many of my dad’s relatives live. It was interesting to read how he was fascinated with different smells, like wrapping paper, at a young age. I live in Maryland USA and would love to win the discover set. Thanks and best wishes to all that enter!

  • snowflake15 says:

Your journey is wonderfully told. Good on you for pursuing your dreams. I choose Jonquil. I was just checking out your website to see what else catches my nose and am excited that you honed in on neo vintage. Usa

  • This was a fantastic read and I truly enjoyed learning more about Darren, his background and his journey to this moment in time. I have gotten to know Darren over the years through this Wonderful World of Perfumery and I am happy to call him a friend. He’s a kind soul that truly loves perfumery, and from reading more about his life and his family, I can better understand why. His fragrances are beautiful creations that bridge the past with our present. And, I think we can all agree, Darren’s got skincare down to a science. I still can’t believe he’s 52 years old. Keep up the amazing work, Darren!

  • Another excellent addition to the Profiles in American Perfumery series. I loved Darren’s point about the overlap between cooking and perfumery: “how to balance flavors and add certain ingredients into a dish not so much for their own flavor, but to bring out the flavor of something else.” I also liked reading about Darren’s professional background, since these profiles show the many and varied paths American perfumers take before arriving at their craft. It sounds like his time consulting with Bill Luebke was invaluable. And it sounds like a professional educator never loses that focus, offering perfumery classes and mentoring his Young Perfumers Club, which sounds terrific for his community. Thanks for sharing, Darren.

I’m in the USA. I haven’t tried any of Darren’s perfumes, so I’d love to win the discovery set. I like CaFleureBon Profiles in American Perfumery on Facebook. Thanks!

  • I loved reading about Darren’s journey into perfume composition. I too liked to play with my mom’s Avon samples so I can relate to the thrill of creation. I recently started exploring with the perfumer’s apprentice beginners kit and I would have loved to have Darren’s experience with a veteran like Bill Luebke. I’m most interested in Jonquille. I’m in MD, USA.

  • Ooh I’m wearing my Jobquil 10ml tonight!! How fortuitous. I love Philip Glass also, his quote about people being afraid of all the changes in the future and he being afraid that nothing will change. And what an amazingly seeet photo of Darren and Vaughn wishing them a beauty so long partnership of joy and success. I would like the full bottleif I’m so lucky and I’m in California. Thank you!!

  • It seems there was a thread of natural scent and fragrance throughout his life always drawing him back. He seemed to avoid committing and even now keeps a foot in his love of music, as well. USA

  • Darren Alan’s journey reminded me of so much I identify with. From fragrances, both in nature and perfumes, to the fascination with recipe methodologies in cuisine. And he loves Glass’s music!

His perfumery is stunning. I bought his Sacred Smoke and was so awed by it that I had to go back and put together a discovery set. Still working through it…. swooning all the while. This man is a genius. His journey from childhood fascination to master perfumer should inspire his students!

If I win the drawing, I’d love to have the Jonquille. It sounds incredible. In any case, I see a lot of his work having a home with me.

  • Mary Stephens Mitchell says:

I would love the chance to win a discovery set from this exciting new American perfumer! I’m fascinated with Darren’s perfume path, because so many things he’s mentioned resonate with me in a personal way. (I mixed Avon perfumes too!) Thank you for this chance. I live in Virginia, USA.

  • I liked this article, it’s cool to read about how people made their mark in the world and their inspirations toward their goals. I also have a great appreciation for the perfumes you make! I’d want to try your discovery set, variety is the spice of life! Ca, USA

  • foreverscents says:

I am amazed that Darren is self-taught. I have tried Fetes de Noel, and it’s a masterpiece. It is so well-blended and the dry down is just gorgeous. I know that Darren does new-vintajge fragrances so brilliantly. I am curious to try his more nature-inspired fragrances.
I would choose the discovery set if I were to win the giveaway.
    I live in the USA.

  • thee_boy_wonder says:

I really loved his journey with fragrance. How it elicited from the smell of flowers in the yard grown up, to privately enjoying fragrance samples! It really reminded me of how I feel in love with fragrance. I would like Jonquille.

  • It is always amazing to know more about american perfumery.
Daren’s path on perfumery was so amazing, I totally loved it. I also liked that his first motivation was his mom and how she taught him cooking. It was also amazing how the founder of Good Scents Company became his mentor.
I would love to try these samples, I am totally sure they are all amazing.

  • What a fun childhood. I never thought of smelling wrapping paper before. What a kind mentor you had. Avon sure takes me back, I couldn’t wait for the new catalog to see what was new in fragrance. I loved their “chapstick” style fragrances. Thanks for the chance. I’d love to test out his offerings. USA.

  • I love how he kept going until he got whre he wanted to be, then flexed wih the changes to keep creatively growing. The forest inspiration appeals to me a lot too. I ould pick the sample set.
