Parfums de Marly Athalia Review (Alexandra Kosinski) 2016 + The LBD of Perfumes Giveaway

Parfums de Marly Athalia review

Parfums de Marly Athalia by Olya Bar

Every woman’s wardrobe needs a little black dress. If Delina is a gauzy pink gown, Athalia is a “LBD” of fragrance and makes a very different scented sartorial statement.

Sophisticated and polished, the warm, slightly spicy floral opening has a velvet-like texture with the soft glow of orange blossom and balmy incense is the olfactive equivalent of the best quality fabric draping over bare shoulders.

If LBD is not your style, I equate Athalia to the best black blazer I own in my closet- a classic YSL tuxedo jacket I hunted down a few years back. A perfectly tailored blazer that I can rely on in any situation, just like an old friend who will always have my back, it is a garment that feels familiar yet never goes out of style. Now let’s talk about that fabric or, rather, its texture. I equate the velvet I adore to the central accord in Parfums de Marly Athalia – iris. Depending on how it’s blended, its buttery and thick aroma can feel smooth and luscious, elegant and decadent.

Parfums de Marly Athalia’s opening of bitter orange and smoky incense is aromatic. There’s also a slightly gothic vibe as if the old rebellious nature of the wearer is peeking through closed gates, yearning to be free. The soft smokiness of the incense enhances the powdery violet-like heart, amplifying the sensuality of the iris, making it feel liberating. Athalia is like a liquid love potion you spray on when you want to attract the one your heart yearns for; it is a powerful weapon of seduction. There is a sense of a shield it creates once applied to the skin, as if it was an invisible armor, offering protection. The sense of power it emanates seems perfectly fitting as the emblem of an iris was used on the ancient heraldic arms of Florence and as ‘fleur de lys’ – a symbol of French royalty prior to the revolution.

The base imparts a warm resinous embrace, as the sweet amber accord liquifies as if it was pure gold poured over the delicate fluffiness of the musk. Cashmeran molecule adds a slight edginess, which softens up after a while and gives in to the vanilla. This stylish boozy vanilla adds a gourmand facet to this composition. There is a strong sense of mystery surrounding Parfums de Marly Athalia, one you could never entirely solve. It perfectly suits that feeling you may have in the last hours of the night when the lines between reality and illusion blur and when anything is possible. You slip away from the party and head into the stillness of the evening, leaving a heady trail of caramelized iris behind you; the soft touch of the velvet fabric continues to hug the shoulders. From the side, one may glimpse the devilish smile playing on your lips. Indeed, that Athalia will be difficult for anyone you encounter to forget tonight, and you are well aware of that.

Notes: Bitter Orange, Incense, Orange Blossom, Iris, Cashmeran, Musk, Vanilla, Amber

Disclosure: The bottle was kindly gifted to me by Parfums de Marly but opinions are always my own.

  • Olya’s review was excellent! Her description of the Amber accord over musk sounds stunning. I adore these kinds of fragrances so I hope to win this! My favorite PDM fragrance is Delina. I would love to give this a try. Thank you for the opportunity. From CT, USA.

Olya’s description of the fragrance and the evening are so appealing; it makes me wish my night life was a little more exciting. Iris is my favorite floral note and I would love the chance to try this. I live in the US. Thank you.

  • Olya did an incredible job reviewing this fragrance. PDM is my favorite house, and it’s almost impossible for me to pick a favorite. Maybe just a favorite for the day, but tomorrow I will probably say it’s another one. If I had to settle on just one it would be Harod.

I love the way Olya described Athalia as “a slightly gothic vibe” and a “liquid love potion”.

I live in Houston Texas and would like to enter the giveaway. Thanks

  • John Michael Jones says:

What I loved about Olya review was THE WORD AMBER & the slight Gothic description! SO MYSTERIOUS! I absolutely love PDM & Oajan is my favorite from the house.

I love the description of caramelized iris trail. I have had the pleasure of smelling this and greatly enjoyed it. I would love to win. I live in Indiana.

  • The review indicates that Parfums de Marly Athalia is the night counterpart to Delina. It is a warm ambery composition with iris musky tones so it does have sensual feel. I am in US.

  • I never heard of Althalia so this is great. I love Iris and I didn’t even know about this. Really enjoy the LBD reference

  • Being a vain person getting peoples attention is really important to me. I’m sure Athalia darker, and mysterious iris nature, iris, moderate sweetness , and boozy touch will get me unsolicited compliments , while smelling amazing.
Oajan is my favorite Parfums de Marly, it’s full , balsamic sweet , one of my favorites . Early spring I bought another 125ml bottle, it’s quite clear how much I love it.
Other than Athalia , I’ll make sure to also sample Haltane , the only two Parfums de Marly fragrances i don’t know
    I’m curious about both
    Another overly exciting giveaway, USA
    Regards

  • I liked the comparison of texture of fabrics to the texture of scents in perfumes and I completely relate. Velvet, gauzy, satin, brocade, wool, mohair…they transpose to the weight and feel and nuances of fragrances.
I love a unique sensual Iris…truly sounds masterful.

Yes please!!! Athalia all the way. It sounds amazing and I love the dark bottle which represents my soul!!! Am I right? Not all of us love the pinky pretty version (it turns completely sour and weird on my skin) so this is a perfect alternative. I smelled this once and fell In love. It’s perfect for the autumn and as a signature scent. I don’t love the price tag (teacher budget – queen tastes)however I would cherish this forever.

  • Olya!! ❤️❤️ Fascinating and Alluring review!!! I own and adore Delina La Rosé but the incense and Iris of Athalia sounds lovely! Especially is colder weather, this could be so lovely! Thank you for the wonderful opportunity! ❤️ USA

  • BoogieDaddy says:

An ambery base with a velvety heart of iris? Yes please, sign me up! I also love incense with iris so this sounds super sexy to me. I love how Olya compared it to a favorite blazer and the imagery of a night out, I can imagine this as classy and seductive. Sounds fantastic. My current Parfums de Marly faves are Layton Exclusif and Delina Exclusif. Reading from here in North Carolina, USA. This frag would be a stunner at upcoming holiday events.

  • This is one from PDM that I haven’t had the chance to try but after reading this review I’m intrigued! Warm vanilla amber with bitter orange sounds lovely for the season. I’ve fallen down the PDM rabbit hole with Delina, Cassilli and Oriana. Thx for the opportunity to enter.

  • I really enjoyed the description of the notes of the fragrance. It makes me think as I sniff. Iris is my favorite note. Athalia is my favorite that I once tried at a store counter. I didn’t buy anything. NY state USA. Thank you for the drawing.

  • First I’d like to thank Olya for the warning:
“The bottle was kindly gifted to me by Parfums de Marly but opinions are always my own.”

Just WOW at how our opinions are exactly the same about certain nuances of Athalia , but at the same time also different about others.
Olya basically described the way Athalia smells on my younger cousin, but on me it’s way more musky and quite carnal. The iris, the smoke, the slightly boozy feel, and the vanilla are there , but at some point the fragrance becomes way more than a scent with “slight edginess” , but instead lustful , fleshy potion.
I believe that Athalia, the way it smells on me of course, is for the times when I feel naughty . It’s not every day wear fragrance.
Love both of my Delina bottles , I mean i have the regular one for a long time, and Exclusif version for around a year now .I also bought Byerley as a gift for dad ,and he absolutely loves it.
My favorite Parfums de Marly fragrance is Delina Exclusive
    Thank you for the opportunity

  • Olya did a wonderful job describing the notes and how it makes you feel. My Favorite PDM is the original Delina Fragrance. Thank you for this Chance USA

  • I love the sound of this, both based of the notes and Olya’s description. Smoky (my favourite accord) combined with iris (my favourite note) can be nothing but a star in my collection. Hopefully I can win and try this one out I’d say my favourite PDM is Oajan. The smell of apple-pie with cinnamon is lovely. Great review Olya, and good luck everyone!

I live in Sweden, but I have a friend who can accept this one for me and then send it to me here in Sweden. I hope this can be possible.

  • I love the note of Bitter Orange, and Orange Blossom, and Incense, and Iris… This speaks to me on a personal level, I need it, I crave it. Even if I don’t win the giveaway I’ll definately purchase a sample and try it out. I’d say my favourite PDM is Layton Exclusif. Not as wearable as the original, but closer to how I like my perfumes to smell.

    Writing from the US.

  • I loved the descriptive review. I enjoyed the last paragraph the best describing the scent notes that I love most. The amber liquefies as of pure gold and the glimpse of the devilish smile playing on the lips were my favorite parts.

  • I love how Olya describes this fragrance as cozy, sensual, and mysterious, which are all qualities I love in a perfume! I’ve never tried any PDM fragrances but I would love to start! Thank you for the opportunity. I’m in MN, USA.

  • Constancesuze says:

Ooo I love finding sensory equivalences with perfume. The idea of this matching a velvet LBD or sharp blazer is so stunning. Would love to try it. And I love an oriental orange blossom.
My favorite PdM is Delina 🙂

  • Gothic you say? Well now you have my interest! This line in particular caught me: “Athalia is like a liquid love potion you spray on when you want to attract the one your heart yearns for; it is a powerful weapon of seduction”!
I have no favorite PdM as I have not sampled them yet!
I quite enjoyed this review Olya!
    Thank you from Canada.

  • This sounds perfect for cold winter nights and holiday parties. That bottles is stunning! I have not yet tried any Parfums de Marly, this one seems like the perfect place to start. I’m in the US, thank you!

  • There have been so many lovely amber and incense perfumes recently reviewed on Cafleurebon. And Parfums de Marly Athalia is no exception. I liked Olya’s description of Parfums de Marly Athalia as imbued with a “strong sense of mystery surrounding Parfums de Marly Athalia, one you could never entirely solve”. My favorite PDM perfume is Layton Exclusif. Love the bottle Parfums de Marly Athalia of Parfums de Marly Athalia. From USA.

  • Awesome review!! I especially like the description of that LBD, my wife would love this fragrance.

My favorite PDM fragrances are Herod for the cooler months and Percival for the hotter months.

  • Thank you, Olya for interesting review!
I don’t remember this perfume but Olya’s comparison with YSL black tuxedo blazer intrigued me. Need to go shop and try again.

  • Parfums de Marly became a top notch brand in such a short period of time , one of the best out there, to my taste of course.
I rarely wear a suit, or tuxedo jacket , only on special occasions, but Olya Bar on Athalia made me think of last December, when I had to make a few hundred Old Fashioned Cupcakes – Orange Cake with Bourbon Buttercream And A Boozy Cherry On Top , for a famous metal band singer birthday party. The parity was quite gothic , I’ll gladly wear Athalia on such events.
Personally I know Parfums de Marly for Herod first , every time it makes me feel like I’m THE king of the castle.
It’s a toss up for me between Herod and Oajan, for my favorite Parfums de Marly fragrance.
Appreciate the review , and the giveaway campaign

  • The intro of this review got me thinking—what’s the equivalent of a “little black dress” in traditional menswear? I’d suggest a navy suit, white shirt, and a solid Grenadine tie, and extending the analogy to fragrance, either a classic vetiver or unobjectionable chypre.

Anyway, a rich iris note can be beautiful and suave in equal measures, and Parfums de Marly Athalia’s use of iris sounds wonderful. It’s full-bodied aspects likely combine well with the astringent qualities of bitter orange and incense, especially over an amber base. Athalia sounds lovely—thanks for the review, Olya.

I’m in the USA. I haven’t tried any Parfums de Marly fragrances.

  • Lovely review Olya! I love her description of Athalia as having an ambery base with a velvety heart of iris. The comparison of fabric textures to the texture of scents. So many fragrances can be thought of as silky, velvety etc. As a fan of Delina, I would love to try the LBD version. MD, USA.

  • The tactile descriptions in the review are marvelous and I can just about taste the “caramelized Iris” and feel the velvet. Intriguing! Herod is my favorite Parfums de Marly fragrance to date.

  • PDM is one of my favorite houses.
I have smelled this many times and sampled.
    Would love to win.

As a massive fan of PDM Layton, I am intrigued by this concoction of warm opening notes to a dark Smokey accord. It gives the aura of a person who is easy to talk to but has a lot of layers to unravel. I wish to own this fragrance to test this myself. I live in NYC, USA.

  • Jacob D Savitt says:

I LOVE ATHALIA!!! Olya nailed it perfectly- leathery, but vanilla and slightly gourmand but not entirely- such a badass scent! For myself, I love Oajan, Herod and Layton the best, but damn, I would love this for my wife.

  • Olya’s description of Athalia as a powerful weapon of seduction caught my attention and I did get a little devilish smile at the end of the review just imagining the possibilities (wink). I’m in USA

  • I have not tried any fragrances by Parfums de Marly, unfortunately. Athalia sounds like a great place to start, though: “gothic vibe”, “liquid love potion”…Mmmm. I’d love to smell it! I’m in WV, USA

  • Parfums de Marly Athalia is a fragrance you should sample first , it changes so much from the opening, to the base.

“There is a strong sense of mystery surrounding Parfums de Marly Athalia, one you could never entirely solve”

I do agree , but Olya observation, but her review is very different from the way Athalia smells on my skin. The sophisticated and polished part quickly goes away, and on the front row not Boss Lady , but Boss B…h comes around.
The fragrance is very much dark, musky, gothic, smoky ,dry and leathery. Caramel or something boozy i don’t smell, the sweetness is there , but it’s not a sweet fragrance.
Little black dress ? Maybe, but with Lace Garter belt in black beneath . If you’re in a mood for cuddling , Athalia is a great option.
Parfums de Marly non-transparent, and transparent bottles look super classy , including Athalia. I like the deep black color, and the contrast with the golden cap.Call me perfectionist, but bottle design, looks and the way it feels, are all important to me.
Oajan is my favorite Parfums de Marly , but Delina Exclusif is breathing in Oajan neck all the time. Both are staples for me.
    Thanks for the draw

Fantastic review Olya! What I enjoyed about Olya’s review is her comparison of the fragrance with velvet, both the fabric and the texture, with the lush softness of balmy incense and the thick, buttery decadence iris. I love iris and incence, they are two of my favorite notes, and I coincidentally (or not?) also love velvet dresses. My favorite Parfums de Marly fragrance so far has to be the beautiful oud of Haltane. I live in the US.

  • Olya did a great job reveiwing this fragrance. I do not own a full bottle as ive only sampled Athalia, but this one is my favorite ive tried from Parfums De Marley so far! I love violet and iris fragrances that come of as powdery and this one fits the bill perfectly.

Olya decribed this scent perfectly in my opinion. This fragrance is beautiful and luxiourious and unlike anything else ive tried from Parfums De Marley before. It makes me feel sexy, confident, and ready to take on the world. I would be thrilled to win a bottle.

    Thanks for the great review!

I absolutely love that PdM is doing an iris fragrance with incense in it. This sounds very cozy, inviting and sensual, with a touch of that wondeful buzz of excitment at the the unknown.

My favorite fragrance from this house is Nisean.

    Cheers from WI, USA

  • Michael Prince says:

I loved Olya’s review of Parfums De Marly Athalia how she describes in detail how this warm, resinous, spicy, and floral fragrance really. A bold ambery fragrance that sounds truly divine. I love Parfums De Marly as a house. My favorite fragrance from Parfums De Marly is Herod. I am from the USA.

  • How have I never heard of this fragrance before now? I love PdM ever since my boyfriend bought me Layton Exclusif from Harrods in 2019. Athalia sounds absolutely beautiful! I love the quote “Athalia is like a liquid love potion you spray on when you want to attract the one your heart yearns for”. The notes are exquisite, particularly that iris note. I don’t own any scents with that note. I love so many PdM scents, including the ones for men. But my absolutely favorite is Delina Exclusif.
Seeing as this giveaway ends on 11/11, I’d be especially thrilled to win it since it is my anniversary with my boyfriend – 29 years!

    I live in the US.

  • Olya’s little black dress and best black blazer references are so descriptive that it makes me know exactly what style of fragrance this must be. I love the note breakdown and it could suit all genders seamlessly. Percival is my favorite from PDM thus far. KY/USA.

  • Oh boy, it is always great to see new PdM new fragrances. I am a huge fan from the brand, being Oriana my favorite one. Olya did a fantastic job here, I am hugely intrigued by Athalia. I think that warm that this fragrance has, mixed with the sweetness makes it a perfect fragrance for the night. I love the Amber accord and musks, so I think this one would be perfect for me.
    USA here.

  • When I think Parfums de Marly , I always think Pegasus . Sure PdM do have all kinds of quality fragrances like Oajan , Herod , Layton , Greenley , the Exclusif stars , and the popular on Instagram Haltane, still I do not get how regular Pegasus is getting so little attention. As much as I like the other I’ve mentioned , my 125ml bottle of Pegasus I cherish most. Smells fantastic , lasts over 10 hours on skin , and projects beyond strong – fills up a room. Compliments galore too.
Being in tailoring business, I would wear Athalia while working with clients at the shop , and also going out clubbing. Classy black , dress to impress , bespoke double breasted suit type of fragrance.”heady trail of caramelized iris” accord is tickling my fancy even more .
Thank you Olya, and Fine Fragrances
