Eleven years ago, Céline Verleure launched Olfactive Studio, a brand whose concept was to associate a photo with a perfume. The first three debuted in 2011: Auto Portrait, Dark Room and Still Life. Since then, the collection has grown over the years, adding the Sepia in collection in 2019 (CaFleureBon Deputy Editor Ida Meister was the first to review Iris Shot and Violet Shot at Esxence 2019  and Sr Editor Lauryn Beer reviewed Leather Shot). Olfactive Studio Dancing Light, which has just been released, and is the thirteenth fragrance from the Black Collection, and the brand’s nineteenth.

The Olfactive Studio Dancing Light “project” dates back to the end of 2018. Céline Verleure wanted to work again with Sidonie Lancesseur, who had created Lumière Blanche in 2012: “This first collaboration went very quickly… too quickly! We understood each other so well that we wanted to work together again,” admits the founder of Olfactive Studio. “We then talked to each other and while taking stock of my collection, I realized that I had a lot of woody fragrances. We had to balance that”, she adds. The idea of a perfume full of white flowers was then obvious, since there was not a true one yet among the many perfumes of the brand. A perfume with a cold, refined and musky start, corresponding to Sidonie Lancesseur’s delicate style.

The name preceded the perfume. Initially, Céline Verleure thought that Olfactive Studio Dancing Light would evoke electric, raw lights. Then COVID-19 entered in our lives, and Celine Verleure and Sidonie Lancesseur wanted to convey a more “Natural” spirit, and therefore chose to work around the phenomenon of the aurora borealis and a tribute to the cold and intense lights. This  natural and mystical light was slightly different from the initial concept: the light would always be dazzling, but this time icy, even frosty and mint would be a key note.

As for each of her perfumes, Céline Verleure wanted to encapsulate the fragrance through a photographer’s lens. For Olfactive Studio Dancing Light,  she discovered Norwegian artist Frøydis Dalheim, on Instagram whose photography is inspired by the magnificent landscapes of her country. Through this “connection” on social media Celine found the perfect photo one which depicts an enigmatic landscape adorning the sky with veils of emerald shades, as if in an impalpable breath.

A magic night at Balsfjord – ©Frøydis Dalheim Photography -Here the northern lights add a poetry and mysticism

But what does the aurora borealis smell like? As soon as Dancing Light opens, I am immersed into a contrast of olfactory sensations that are fresh, woody and floral at the same time. I first perceive bergamot mixed with pink pepper, with a hint of cardamom to amplify the hot-cold effect. The bursting minty note is both icy but also slightly creamy (probably thanks to the fig milk accord) and will be the common thread throughout the evolution of Olfactive Studio Dancing Light. The pine needles also come to rub against my skin, bringing their green and woody facet, then transform into branches allowing a multitude of flowers to bloom despite the frost: jasmine and neroli, sensual and hypnotic, freesia, suave and fruity and syringa, here very aromatic. This multiplication of raw materials does not weigh on Olfactive Studio Dancing Light, quite the contrary: Sidonie Lancesseur’s creation is light as a breath, with bursts of light reminiscent of the sublime effects of the aurora borealis. The evolution is very delicate, with sandalwood, cedar wood and musk which raise the temperature over the hours, without altering the spirit of the lights of the Far North, both fresh, mysterious and shimmering.

Olfactive Studio Dancing Light remains in the spirit of its Black Collection predecessors, where photography and perfume are exquisitely linked. The swirls of light specific to the aurora borealis have found a fragrance faithful to the mystery they unfold, here magnified by the lens of Frøydis Dalheim. The fresh-woody-floral aspect gives it a unique and totally mixed signature I love to wear.

Notes: Italian bergamot, icy mint, Guatemalan cardamom, fig milk accord; pineapple accord, Indian ocean pink pepper, Siberian pine needle, Egyptian jasmine, Moroccan neroli, syringa accord, freesia accord, French lavandin, Indian sandalwood, Virginia cedarwood, ambery notes, mosses, musk.

Disclaimer: A huge “merci” to Celine Verleure for the Olfactive Studio Dancing Light bottle provided for this review. The opinions expressed are my own.

  • Lovely review. Such descriptive language that really conveys the essence of the perfume. And the accompanying images selected are perfect for the review! I don’t have a favorite Olfactive Studio perfume because I haven’t smelled any yet. Maybe Aurora Borealis will be my first! Cheers from NC, USA.

I enjoyed reading Emmanuelle’s review of Dancing Light. The concept of photography and evoking a smell from the aurora borealis sounds very interesting. The note breakdown promises a very interesting fragrance. I think Still Life is my favorite from Olfactive Studio. I live in Maryland USA.

  • I have been aware of Olfactive Studio since its founding and still have Still Life from those early years. However, my favorite is Lumiere Blanche so it is exciting to know that Olfactive Studio Dancing Light is by the same perfumer Sidonie who created Lumiere Blanche. Given Emmanuelle’s review, I suspect there is a close link between Lumiere Blanche and Dancing Light as both employ some similar notes and both have milky aspects in the composition. My fav. from Olfactive Studio is, of course, Lumiere Blanche. I am in US.

  • “Veils of emerald shades” on delicate white flowers.. I like that! It’s time to think of a winter fragrance

    I live in Portugal

  • So many great notes in one fragrance. This perfume sounds so good. The review is also very nice. Thank you for the chance. I live in Europe.

  • Such a wonderful review. Love this Fragrance house. Rose & Iris are 2 beautiful scent. Dancing Light sounds interesting mix notes great for Summer. Thank you for this Chance USA

  • Thanks for this amazing article Emmanuelle!

I never really thought about the person behind the brand of Olfactive Studio so I appreciate you introducing me to Céline Verleure and her thoughts behind the concept of Dancing Light.

Your description reads extremely dynamic and uplifting. From hot to cold, from green to icy. There is a cadence in the way you describe it which makes me very eager to give this new release a good wearing! I’m going to have to try this!

My favourite fragrance from Ofactive Studio is Still Life in Rio. I love Spicey Fruity fragrances and it’s simply perfect for this hotter weater.

    Greetings from the UK!

  • I like the concept of creating perfumes based on photographs. Olfactive Studio Dancing Light creates the feeling of cold nights but with dazzling colors – picture of hope in a dark world. I haven’t tried Olfactive Studio creations. It is interesting how there are now perfumes based on music, paintings (Van Gogh), and also photographs. Thanks for the review and draw. From USA.

  • What a creative endeavor ! The idea of capturing a scent in a photo and a photo in a scent! I think this will be a joy to experience in maryland.

  • I think the Northern Lights have inspired artisans ever since they were first seen. So many beautiful, haunting photographs have been made of this natural phenomenon, I can easily see how they would be inspiration for Olfactive Studio. I would expect an icy, woody composition. I’m happy to see the mint, pine needles and mosses. It seems balanced with the multitude of florals. My favorite Olfactive Studio perfume is Still Life. I’m in MD, USA.

  • Thank you Emmanuelle for another captivating review. I’m intrigued by Dancing Light just from imagining how it would smell like under the Northern Lights. My favorite fragrance from Olfactive Studio at this time is Chambre Noir. Thank you for the giveaway. I’m in USA

  • Emmanuelle Varron review was informative and abstract , with some nice pictures added.
I do know Olfactive Studio , I was really impressed by Lauryn Beer review of Leather Shot, and now I own a bottle.
Funny thing is Leather Shot and Dancing Light both have cedar , sandalwood and cardamom.
From Dancing Light i expect lush semi aromatic , semi floral fragrance, with some cozy woods in the base.Norwegian green lights could be shining upon me.
    Thanks for the draw

Really amazing description. I love how the perfume is inspired by aurora borealis and how they changed the with covid 19. From artificial to natural.

  • I’m a fan of Olfactive Studio. One of my favs is Still Life in Rio. I liked the beautiful photography. The Northern Lights and the wonderful notes seem to be a perfect fit for Dancing Light. On my wishlist it goes. Thanks for another awesome review and draw. Mich USA

  • I loved Emmanuelles review because it made me remember the first and only time I saw an aurora borealis and it was way up North with my father.
Talking about the fragrances, it really looks so promissing! Woody, fresh and floral at the same time is something I really want to try. I hope i get my nose on it soon
    USA here.
I have not tried any Olfactive Studio fragrance yet, sadly, but I hope to do it soon.

  • I have always wanted to see the aurora borealis in person! Love the shimmering interpretation with a hot-cold contrast. I don’t yet have a favorite from Olfactive Studio, but would love to try this. I live in CA, US.

A beautiful description by Emmanuel really intrigued by notes especially Jasmine and Sandalwood. This is a house that I have got no experience with but I am fascinated by nonetheless. Thanks a million from the UK

The review is very inspiring, i especially like the photos of iced mint and, of course, aurora borealis itself. Perfumes with cooling qualities are quite rare, or even unique, so i definately would like to try this one. My favorite from their line is Still Life. Wishing good luck with Dancing Light,

  • This was mouth watering, a mint fragrance that is also creamy and with syringa… That was it, I wanted to try it. But it’s inspiration upon northern lights and Emanuelle’s lyrical description has definitely seal the deal. Thank you so much for the opportunity. From UE – France.

  • What a gorgeous concept and packaging behind this perfume! I love the composition of the notes, lemon, mint and pine setting the cold, nordic background and cardamom bringing a shroud of warm haze, then aromatic notes and flowers and a delicate woody base that doesn’t break the ice (pun intended, lol).
    I live in the EU.

  • ScentedKnits says:

Everything about this review makes me want to get my nose on this! The images are beautiful and the description of the fragrance, especially the fig milk accord that runs through it, capture my attention from the start. Lumiere Blanche is my current favorite from the brand, so I have high hopes for a fragrance from the same perfumer. I live in the US.

  • I feel the reviewer describes this as a complex fragrance. I don’t have a favorite from the house. US

  • This review had me missing the northern lights! My favourite Olfactive Studio perfume is Leather Shot. Thank you for the review, writing from the EU.

  • Expressing a photograph in a perfume is intriguing and complex. There are some photographs by Hernando Rivera showing lightning striking an erupting volcano. A fragrance interpreting that picture would be exciting! I haven’t tried any Olfactive Studio scents. I am in the US.

  • I have always dreamed to travel to Far North to see Aurora Borealis, maybe this is the chance to wear those magic courtains of light, the most i’m appealed by the hot&cold contrast, the lightness and airy nature of Dancing Light, so far i don’t have a fav amoung Olfactive Studio because i never tested them! From Romania with love!

  • It was a delightful review. Thanks for introducing this new one. From the brand, I only tried Chambre Noire which is a great perfume. I live in the US.

  • What a beautiful review of a fragrance inspired by a natural phenomenon! The northern lights inspire much awe, and Dancing Lights sounds beautiful with its fresh woody notes. I don’t have a favourite Olfactive Studio perfume yet. Based in the UK.

  • What a lovely review!
I am intrigued by the description —
    “fresh, mysterious and shimmering”.

Loved the review – a light, green, woody perfume sounds lovely. My favorite Olfactive Studio scent is Ombre Indigo. I live in Nashville, TN USA.

  • Nice review Emmanuelle! Nice idea to link a photo with a perfume, and in this Dancing Light , the amazing pictures of the norwegian photographer Frøydis Dalheim, should tell us all about the scent. In this dreadful hot week we are suffering in Spain (I think in France is quite similar) the aurora borealis are so refreshing, and this images translated to the perfume is right on time. The idea of a scent full of white flowers with a cold, refined and musky start was great! (and it was new to the brand collection). So the aurora borealis smells, according to Sidonie Lancesseur, as a “contrast of olfactory sensations that are fresh, woody and floral at the same time”. She uses pine needles! I love this smell: rubbing the needles and smelling my hands was a must when I spends my childhood summers in Costa Brava. Then the white flowers bloom even in the nordic frost. The perfume is light as a breath, fragile with the dancing effects of the northern lights. It is the right time to wear a fresh-woody-floral scent (not just citrus are for summer)! I haven’t smelled any Olfactive Studio perfume yet! I live in Spain, EU.

  • lavienrose13 says:

I know a bit the Olfactive studio perfumes and I owne a bottle of Flash Back, which is just perfect to wear these days.
The way Emmanuelle describes the notes evolution, together with the mint and pine needle presences make me think this one might be a crush.
The whole artistic direction of the brand is striking and I am particulary in love with the bottle. Thanks for the review, greetings from France !

  • Such an incredible combination of notes. I don’t know that I’ve ever smelled anything quite like this before. Even the list of notes conjours up the imagery of aurora borealis. What a beautiful review! I have never tried anything from Olfactive Studio, so I’d be thrilled to acquire this one as my first!
    I live in the USA.

  • My favorite Olfactive Studio is Panorama, but I am curious about this newer release. I feel like every fragrance from this house is easy to wear and easy to like, so you can’t go wrong with either of them. Thanks!

  • Regis Monkton says:

I want to try this fragrance very much: its list of notes is very appealing to me. I’d like to see what the icy mint is like along with the rest of the ingredients. When I was reading about this fragrance I started thinking a lot more seriously about sampling this company’s collected works. I haven’t tried anything yet from this company. I live in the U.S.A.

  • this sounds amazing, and since the only fragrance that I know from the brand is Lumiere Blanche, also by Sidonie Lancesseur, I can only assume I would like this, too.
beautiful visuals, they make me think far away, brisk air, green herbs and deep frozen waters, mmmmm, a treat.

  • I dont know much about Olfactive Studio, but i like how it associates each perfume in its collection to a picture. Emmanuelle’s review of Dancing Light makes me want to investigative this house and try some of its offerings. I dont have a favorite olfactive studio perfume yet.

I love that Dancing Light is ‘light as a breath, with bursts of light’. I would love to feel this frosty green clear perfume in a torrid summer evening, sipping a Dry Gin and day dreaming about the crispy air of North Europe.
I don’t have a favorite Olfactive Studio perfume because I haven’t smelled any yet.

  • As an avid admirer of Still Life in Rio, I was thrilled to read Emmanuelle’s article about the new fragrance from my beloved house of perfumes.
I enjoyed reading about the brand itinerary and the context of developing Dancing Light. The composition and notes are highly appealing to my taste, so I can not wait to try the new gem from Olfactive Studio.
Thanks to Emmanuelle for the masterfully written review and thanks to Olfactive Studio for a generous giveaway.
    Greetings from Slovenia.

  • When Dancing Light was released, I immediately knew I needed to try it. I am glad to know that Celine Verleure and Sidonie Lancesseur decided to convey a more natural light with the fragrance. The aurora borealis is perfect inspiration for a fragrance named Dancing Light, so the notes were chosen perfectly. Emmanuelle’s review of Dancing Light makes me want to try this fragrance even more. Fresh, woody, floral, cold, creamy, and icy are all adjectives used to describe the fragrance and they greatly appeal to me. I love evergreens, so I like to try any fragrance that features them. Pine and mint are a favorite combination of mine, which are done beautifully in a few fragrances. As Emmanuelle points out, Dancing Light seems like a unique fragrance. Out of the Olfactive Studio fragrances I have tried, I really enjoy Close Up. Thank you, Emmanuelle, for the review, and thank you to Olfactive Studio for the giveaway. I am located in the USA.

  • Mirea Luca says:

The smell of pine needles is one of my olfactory memories trigger. My mind instantly goes into the woods as a child. Adding mint to form that coolness and merging them as a soft layer of snow on a pine forrest is so smart and interesting to me. This complexity of the fragrance is surely living up to this review. Unfortunately i never sampled an Olfactive Studio perfume but this sure seems to be a choice for a favourite one. I live in Romania, EU.

  • wandering_nose says:

Thank you Emmanuelle, this is a lovely descriptive review. I always appreciate a quick recap of the brand’s creations to date, that’s very informative for brands whose offering I have been less familiar with. I love the concept of capturing a fragrance in a photo and vice versa. Northern Lights are such a gracious subject for both photography and perfume, while still remaining challenging by their ephemeral nature. The contrast of hot and cold, darkness and dazzle. Fresh – woody – floral sounds like just the right way of encapsulating Aurora Borealis in a fragrance. I haven’t tried anything from Olfactive Studio as of yet but am intrigued to do so soon. I am based in Dublin, Republic of Ireland, EU

  • Such a wonderful review. Love this Fragrance house. Rose & Iris are 2 beautiful scent.from sarajevo Bosnia

Olfactive Studio Still Life is one of my favorite office friendly , pleasing hot weather fragrances . I really wonder how Dancing Light will compare to it. I know I’m comparing oranges and apples, but still..
The icy mint , lavender ,all the flowers and woods, I like the complexity of Dancing Light, and the balance of the fragrance.
Thank you Emmanuelle Varron and Olfactive Studio

  • I haven’t encountered many fragrances that utilize mint as an obvious note, so that immediately intrigues me, along with the fun aurora borealis theme. Dancing Light sounds complex, while also being easy to wear because of its lightness. I haven’t tried any Olfactive Studio perfumes, but the photography concept is very cool, and I’m going to seek out a few samples. Thanks for the review, Emmanuelle!

I love Emmanuelle’s review of Olfactive Studio Dancing Light. It sounds like Celine Verleure Olfactive Studio founder and DA (©Olfactive Studio) and Robertet perfumer Sidonie Lancesseur have come together to create another masterpiece. I am loving the sound of this spicy, green, ozonic, icy, and resinous fragrance…such an interesting interplay of notes. My favorite Olfactive Studio Perfume is Still Life In Rio. I’m from the USA.

  • Claumarchini says:

Thank you Emmanuelle for this amazing review! I am not familiar with the brand unfortunately, I love the fact of pairing a perfume with a picture, it gives even more depth and “reality” to a fragrance, and helps to get immersed in the landscape the scent wants to create.
I am very intrigued by Dancing Light as I am a big fan of mint, and love a lot icy and green scents. I am also intrigued by the white flower heart, and in how it interacts with the green notes on one hand and the creamy and round ones on the other. Greetings from Milan

Chambre Noire , most famous Olfactive Studio fragrance as far as I know, is straight gorgeous. To me it smells exactly like slightly over baked traditional Vinarterta cake with homemade plum jam.
Sidonie Lancesseur cooked something interesting with Dancing Light, Emmanuelle Varron take on the fragrance reminded me of making Cardamom Pound Cake , with fresh mint on top. I imagined eating the cake somewhere in Norway, while looking at the gorgeous Northern Lights

The ice , the lights, the glow, the classic Vanilla Ice song , and Dancing Light do share a few characteristics .
I love the inspiration behind the fragrance, the auroras I’ve researched myself recently, there are a few , and they can be seen near the poles of both the northern and southern hemisphere. In the north the display is known as the aurora borealis; in the south it is called the aurora australis.
In Dancing Light I like the rather unusual contrast between the mint , pine , the florals , and the woody drydown.
I’m familiar with all Olfactive Studio fragrances, excluding Dancing Light, and if I have to share my favorite ones:

I have a huge love for Olfactive Studio after sampling Chypre Shot. It’s amazing to see the visual of an aurora borealis being translated to a fragrance. From the metalllic bergamot pink pepper, to the iciness of the mint, to the green of the cardamom and the pinks of the florals, with their different hues and radiance, I am absolutely excited to sample this.

Wonderful review Emmanuelle! I feel that Emmanuelle’s review is incredibly descriptive and informative about the process behind the creation of the perfume, especially how the concept evolved from raw electric lights to a more “natural” feeling Northern Light’s fragrance after COVID-19 entered in our lives. I love this type of insight into the creative process behind perfumery and I feel very inspired by Emmanuelle’s letting us take a peak into this with her review.
