Manuel Cross of Rogue Perfumery is a self-taught artisanal American perfumer whose fragrances are created in small batches and are highly in demand. He is a former chef who once worked for Wolfgang Puck; the olfactive arts are linked with the culinary arts in many ways.  In a recent CaFleureBon review Manuel Cross explains the genesis of Rogue Perfumery as part of a ten-year process to teach himself perfume-making:  His repertoire of perfumes, which now number 13 have been vintage inspired and with each fragrance one can see the progression of his artistry. They may be labeled EDTs, but they have EDP strength and longevity. While he’s used rose in such perfumes as Chypre Siam, Mousse Illumine and the 2021 top 10 CaFleureBon best of scent from Steven Gavriolatos, Derviche II and also used in 2021 Vetifleur. Rogue Perfumery Rostracto is the first rose-centric perfume for his brand and is launched today 4/21/22.  “Rostracto is my interpretation of what a cubist painting of a rose would smell like, certainly not photo realistic, dynamic broken up and reassembled in an abstracted form— rather than a single viewpoint”-Manuel Cross

Manuel (Manny) is a quiet, humble man, dedicated to honing his craft, using the finest ingredients and selling his perfumes at affordable prices.  In my opinion,  one of the important things that makes him “rogue” in this cluttered fragrance market is not only the uniqueness of his compositions, but that he rebels against the “aspirational” pricing of many niche perfumes that are out of the reach of most perfume lovers.  Rogue Perfumery Rostracto is created with Bulgarian Rose which packs a powerful punch without overwhelming the other ingredients. –Michelyn Camen, Editor-in-Chief

  • “To convey a cubist painting of a rose”..now that’s quite a challenge, and I’d love to have such a perfume in my collection. Thank you

I’ve been thinking about making simple perfumes, just for fun. Hey, why not? I love this hobby and I love sharing this passion with others. Great for gifting, I think.

It’s amazing to see folks like perfumer Manuel Cross who start with an interest and a passion, and to see where it eventually can lead. M. Cross also gives people hope who plan to change or do change their career midstream. Follow your passions, giftings, and given or groomed talents, right? Why not? We’ve only got one life to live. Seize the day!

Of all of the floral scents and flowers for that matter, the rose will always be king in my view. I really look forward to getting my nose on this one! Thank you for the well executed description, Steven.

I really appreciate what you are saying, Michelyn. Niche can price a lot of us regular consumers out–or at a minimum it causes us to be judicious in our purchases. (Sometimes that’s not a bad thing, though. Ha!) It is always appreciated when the price point is within grasp. Interestingly, I think that also garners brand loyalty, which can often lead to higher profit margins in the long term.

I have heard of Rogue and been interested in a few of their offerings. Rostracto is now on that list.

  • Steven’s interview with Manuel Cross was very insightful. It was interesting to learn a bit more about Rogue perfumery and how Manuel Cross began as a self taught perfumer and his expectations for Rogue Perfumery. He explains his thought process about his first rose-centric perfume. He expressed how he wanted to make a rose based perfume that was different from other rose based fragrance.

Manuel Cross work is amazing and I love how he recreates, with a modern twist, vintage powerhouses. I already have Bon Monsieur and Mousse Illuminee and I am really curious to try this new rose fragrance (love artemisia and fir balsam…I see how he was able to make a dark rose and not a feminine one).
As always, super quality natural materials and absolutes!

  • I really enjoyed Steven’s interview with Manuel Cross. I’ve seen Rouge Perfumes but never had the chance to try any. As a rose lover this really drew me in and to hear that it’s a different take on rose has me excited try smell this one.

  • Love Rogue Perfumery. One of my favs is Mousse Illuminee. A rose centered perfume that packs a punch sounds wonderful. A Bulgarian Rose combined with a Charred Cedar note is right up my alley. I enjoyed Steven’s interview with Manuel. I do like the classic vibe of Rogue. Thanks for another awesome interview and generous draw. Mich USA

  • My god, you guys are killing me with this rose fragrances. They are my soft spot. Great review! This fragrance, seems to be an unique experience, “how a cuban painting of a rose would smell like”, now that sounds extraordinary! I am from Romania, EU.

  • Just as perfumers strive to find their perfect rendition of rose so do I as a consumer and passionate fragrance fan. Always seeking the one I can honestly say is “just right.” Rose was my Mother’s name; she was the perfect rose and now I hope to try Rogue Perfumery Rostracto and end my quest. Thank you for considering my entry. I reside in the U.S.

  • The amazing notes of the fragrance and it’s uniqueness appeals to me. I live in Poland, EU. I don’t have a favorite Rogue.

  • Michelyn & Steven!!! ❤️❤️❤️❤️ Excellent interview & introduction! I’m super excited about Rogue’s new release! Steven mentioned that Manny Cross has a bit of a cult following… count me in as a member! I’m very intrigued to see Rogue’s take on rose & to experience the more deconstructed, abstract impression. Thank you for this awesome giveaway!!! ❤️❤️❤️ USA

  • Rachel Part 2
ps – my favorite Rogue at the moment is probably Chypre Siam, but I love them all!

  • I really enjoyed Steven’s interview with Manny. I’ve recently been really into exploring niche fragrances and am slowly building a small collection. I do not have any rose focused fragrances to date and would love to get my hands on a bottle. If I don’t win, I’ll certainly be on the lookout for samples from this house!

  • It was interesting that Michelyn mentioned that Manuel used to work for Wolfgang Puck! Didn’t see that coming. Considering that, one would think more of his fragrances would be gourmand. Or are they? Interesting that Steven thought there was oak moss in the fragrance.

  • AleksCipri says:

Oh wow another fragrance from Rogue!? I am definitely one of those cult followers of Manuel’s work. Rogue perfumery is one of my favorite indie houses. He is just so talented. And as someone who doesn’t buy ultra expensive fragrances I appreciate his prices and the chance to smell tru masterpieces without overpaying. What intrigued me the most from the introduction is that Michelyn describes this new fragrance as Bulgarian Rose with a powerful punch that doesn’t overwhelm other ingredients, but then you read other ingredients and you realize they are mostly all very powerful too! I really enjoyed more detailed description of Rostracto and hearing Steven’s impressions. I also really like the name an how Manuel came up with it. I definitely do not expect this to be a typical rose rather something abstract and rich, so I am very excited to try it. I like the combination of rose with fir, benzoin and smoky charred elements. I have so many Rogue perfumes I adore – Mousse Illuminee (my no. 1!), Champs Lunaires, Ishtar, Derviche II….I’m from Illinois, US.

  • liquidasset77 says:

The whisper of herbaceous artemisia and transparent Bulgarian rose setting in a smoldering cedar has to be the a charismatic blend.

  • Steven’s interview with Manuel Cross was so interesting. Love learning new things about a Perfumer. Rogue Perfumery sounds wonderful love the notes.Thank you for the chance USA

  • I’m so happy to learn Manuel Cross is not only a perfumer, but most importantly a fellow Chef ‍, and on top of all at one point of time, working under Wolfgang Puck …. talking about MEGA star Chef. Owner of not one , but 2 , one Michelyn star restaurants . Everyone knows CUT and Spargo , but a few know he comes from a family of Pastry Chefs. I do have a picture with him, with autograph. I told him I trained under the Master Pierre Hermé, and started laughing and said “He screams a lot, doesn’t he?” .
There’s a quote from Wolfgang Puck I keep on poster at my bakery :
“Cooking is like painting, or writing a song. Just as there are only ao many notes or colors, there are only so many flavors – it’s how you combine them that sets you apart ”
After watching the video with Steven, I now think Manuel Cross do have the same approach to cooking, and perfumes.
Upscale resinous rose , Rostracto is a fragrance for special occasions.
I’m waiting for my Rogue Perfumery sample set to arrive , i wish I’ve waited a bit longer. I remember Karl Topham Derviche II review reminded me of Crème Anglaise Cake , with Macerated in Bourbon Berries, and Sone Fruits, and Powdered Sugar , the main reason I ordered the sample set. I can’t wait to try them all ,I’ll sample Rostracto too
Appreciate Michelyn introduction, the video interview, and the giveaway campaign

  • The name is such a clever play on rose and abstract 🙂 I am definitely interested in trying Rogue Perfumes after watching your video, Steven. It’s always so intriguing to hear from the perfumer, and I loved watching you smell the fragrance again once you heard what the notes were. I was also immediately snagged by Michelyn’s description of a punching rose- I’m always on the lookout for one of those. Thank you all for the review- writing from the EU.

  • What appeals to me was how he interpreted these vintaged inspired creations that he brings to life, and placed deeper meaning into it as he described this rose in a darker, abstract form. A creator can talk about all the ingredients within a fragrance, however when the creator ties it with a story/meaning, then it resembles with the consumer’s life and experiences. I was just taken back to when my uncle wore these masculine and appealing scent when I was a kid and I envision Manny’s fragrances to be a representation of those scents my uncles use to wear. Unfortunately he passed away 12 years ago and can’t ask him. I stay in Salinas, California, so now that I am aware of a niche perfume house whose prices are at a more affordable price to individuals as myself, it encourages me to continue my journey with perfumes in an area that has a lot of room for perfume appreciation.

  • I love Manuel’s work and his take on a rose scent sounds intriguing, he uses the highest quality in his creations and his blending is impeccable !

  • Just watch the interview!!!! I found Manuel Cross a daring, shy, and amazing personality. A self-taught perfumer like Rogue really creates exceptional, super quality natural materials, vintage expression, and awesome fragrances. I am lucky enough that I have Chypre Siam, Mousse Illuminee, Ishtar, Bon Monsieur, and Tabac Vert in my collection. His first rose-centric ROSTRACTO notes sound interesting, appealing, and on my want list. Thanks all for the interview and the article on the new perfume ROSTRACTO introduction. Wish I could participate in the draw.
    Love from Peshawar, Pakistan

  • From Michelyn’s introduction, I learned that one of Manuel’s principles is to make niche available to perfume lovers or every budget, and from Steven’s interview, that Rostracto is a dark, abstract, cubist rose with focus on the balsamic aspects of the composition, as opposed to a dewy garden-rose.
I live in the EU and don’t have a favorite Rogue.

  • Thanks Michelyn for the introduction and I agree 100% with Mr. Cross rebellion against the “aspirational” pricing of niche perfumery, each year is up and up. Steven’s interview with Manuel Cross is great, because the simplicity, shyness and good character and passion of Manuel. It is very insightful. As Steven say, Mr Cross has a cult following and I am member of the cult, and I am sure if he stayed as a chef, I would follow his food/dishes as well. Love this resinous rose he created and bottled and named so beautifully as Rostracto. I love Chypre-Siam: the thai food touch to a chypre is amazing. I live in Spain, EU. Redolessence subscriber as Albert Tua.

  • How refreshing that Manny keeps his creations at an affordable price point! It is crazy how steep some of these niche scents are priced at!
And you had me at ROSE! I love rich, rose fragrances and I loved Steven’s review/take on it. I’ve never had the pleasure of smelling any Rogue scents so I’d be thrilled to have this one to be the first in my collection.
    I live in the US.

  • Thank you for conducting such a stellar interview, Steven. I love learning about artisanal and self-taught perfumers.
Firstly, I was fascinated by how much dedication Mr. Cross has put into learning how to create fragrances. He seems such a gentleman, who perfected his craft but stayed humble and open to new adventures. Respect! Secondly, I am impressed that his fragrances reflect his sensibilities and perfectly emulate the vintage classic style.
Rostracto, as Mr. Cross described it, is an abstract complex rose-centric fragrance that conveys a cubist painting of a rose. After hearing this description Rostracto has all my attention.
Thank CaFlerureBon and Steven for superb content and Mr. Cross for a generous giveaway and for sharing your passion with the world.

  • I’m very happy to hear about this house and interested in sampling all the products. Keep up the good work.

  • I enjoy Steven’s reviews and am a Redolessence subscriber. I have not tried Rouge Perfumes so far. Enjoyed his interview with Manuel Cross. Michelyn’s take on “rogue” as a rebellious artist in Manuel Cross is spot on and I learnt that he was a chef too. As a rose lover Rogue Perfumery Rostracto is intriguing. Thanks for the draw.

  • I enjoyed listening to the perfumer say what notes were in the perfume. From the introduction is was refreshing to read the house does not use “aspirational” pricing. US

  • Thank you Michelyn for the intro and Steve for the interview with Manuel Cross. I agree with Michelyn that Mr. Cross does indeed come across as a humble but passionate creator in the interview with Steve. I’m intrigued to try out his creations as it will be a first from a Chef/Perfumer. I’ve had Mousse Illumine on my list for a while now and I’m still working through the list. I’m in USA

  • Jake Dauod says:

I am still unfamiliar with Rogue, so I don’t have a favorite as of yet. Based on Michelyn’s intro, however, I think this brand has great potential and I would like to try some of their offerings. What I enjoy about this fragrance is its focus on rose with unique aspects to make the rose stand out. I also really enjoyed the interview on Steven’s channel. I always enjoy hearing the perfumer talk about the subtle details about the creation process that often get overlooked. Again, this one sounds really good. Kind regards from IN, USA.

  • BohemianGarage says:

Thank you, Rogue, for all the amazing mossy, floral, animalic and aromatic creations! I love Tabac Vert and Illuminee, but I also love dark rose, so I am very excited to experience this one! Also thank you for making your sample sets so accessible. They really are a great way to explore.

  • wandering_nose says:

Thank you Michelyn and Steven! I loved the opportunity to learn about another amazing creation from Manuel Cross. Michelyn has pictured some admirable details from Manuel’s background and trhe concept behind his perfume brand – I had been aware he used to be a chef but knowing he wants to make his creations available to an average – earning perfume consumer is new to me, and I can only say kudos to him for that. I am amazed how humble and down to earth Manuel is as a person! I have been to Sofia Reina in Madrid recently, to admire the biggest artworks of Picasso, Dali, Miro and other modern artists, so seeing a mental picture of an abstract rose, based on an idea of a broken and reassembled component speaks absolute volumes to me. Thank you from Dublin, Ireland, EU

  • A dark, abstracted rose will always lure me in! The combination of resins and artemisia isn’t something I’ve come across before!

My favourite Rogue is Tabac Vert.

    From Mass, USA

  • GennyLeigh says:

A cubist rose is an interesting concept. I’ve tried a few of Manuel Cross’ compositions and he is a master perfumer. The charred woody notes with the feminine rose note makes for an interesting juxtaposition. I have a few Rogue fragrances from the discovery set and would love to try this one, Favorite Rogue is Mousse Illuminee. MD, USA.

  • I think its awesome that even though Manny was a chef for the esteemed Wolfgang Puck, he decided to pursue his passion in perfume artistry. I have yet to try any of his fragrances, but from people’s impressions they are very well made. Thank you for holding a giveaway that is very generous of you and good luck to everyone! Oklahoma, United States

  • Mirosław Florek says:

Based on reviews, my favorite perfume should by Chypre-Siam. I love the idea of making such perfumes.

  • Steven claims the fragrance is exceptional with amazing longetivity and quality, sophisticated and classy. I love that Manuel describes it as dark and abstract, with rose as the main note and I’d really like to try it on my skin!

I’m impressed by Manuel Cross life journey , I truly am. I admire people who know what they want in life, and most importantly how to achieve their goals .
Rostracto feels smooth, refined, but also alluring. I like how Michelyn, and Steven described the fragrance, and the way Bulgarian rose , and resins are complimenting each other.
Thank you Michelyn, Steven, and Rogue Perfumery
    USA

  • I am genuinely fond of Rogue Perfumery’s “Mousse Illuminee” and I also enjoy “Bon Monsieur”, “Fougere L’Aube”, “Derviche” (i.e. the first one), and more. I found Manuel Cross to be skilled at: being a perfumer and customer satisfaction. I’d love to try this new one from him. I appreciate Michelyn’s insight concerning Manuel’s use of Bulgarian rose, and I appreciate Steven’s interview w/ Manuel- it was interesting to see what Manuel is like, and I enjoyed Manuel’s insight about his new fragrance release. I live in the U.S.A.

  • Thanks for the article Michelyn and thank you Steven for the interview with Manuel Cross!

Rogue Perfumery has certainly shaken the fragrance world with some excellent perfumery over the last couple of years. I have tested Vetifleur and Mousse Illuminee, and I absolutely love the creativity Manuel is able to blend like a modern master perfumer.

I didn’t know Manuel was a chef prior to becoming a perfumer and I wonder how much this has helped his career in fragrance. Does the blending of various senses of taste work similarly like blending difference notes for the sense of smell? He is an interesting person and I’m glad Steven had a chance to speak to him in person.

You can hear how impressed Steven is about Rostracto and Manuel’s humble and kind demeanor really want me to support this House and try more of his fragrances. Rostracto sounds amazing and I would love to try it.

    Greetings from EU!

  • I’m really impressed by manuel cross as a self taught perfumer but also style and direction of his House. It is interesting to learn that he spent nearly a decade honing his craft. I’m curious to smell his interpretation of rose. Marit UK

  • I’ve been very impressed with Manuel Cross’s fragrances, including the samples I didn’t actually enjoy wearing. Rogue perfumes are full-bodied, opinionated, express their ideas with gusto, verve, and a classic sensibility (Mousse Illumine and Fougère L’Aube being my favorite of these). I enjoyed hearing Cross talking about his learning curve, because while he’s clearly come along way, he also has a nose for truly exceptional perfumery. He also does vintage-style fragrances as well as anyone out there.

Regarding Rostracto, I’ve yet to find a rose fragrance that really speaks to me, so a deconstructed “cubist painting” rose is very intriguing. I’m drawn to a dark, abstract, smoky rose, that gets away from the fresh garden feel that is so common. Also, this bottle is absolutely beautiful; it will be a centerpiece on any collector’s shelf. Thank you to Michelyn profiling this new release and to Steven for the thoughtful interview with Cross.

    I’m in the Midwest, USA.

  • “His repertoire of perfumes, which now number 13 have been vintage inspired and with each fragrance one can see the progression of his artistry.”

Vintage inspired, but not necessarily a throwback , old-school scents , Derviche and Derviche II to me smell quite modern, and up to date.

“Manuel (Manny) is a quiet, humble man, dedicated to honing his craft, using the finest ingredients and selling his perfumes at affordable prices. In my opinion, one of the important things that makes him “rogue” in this cluttered fragrance market is not only the uniqueness of his compositions, but that he rebels against the “aspirational” pricing of many niche perfumes that are out of the reach of most perfume lovers.”

YES-YES-YES, perfectly said, I agree 100% . If the same fragrances came out of brands like Roja Dove, Fragrance Du Bois and Xerjoff, people would’ve have to pay 4-5 times the prices.
The Bulgarian rose, the “hidden” birch tar , and the resins , Rostracto sounds fantastic
Depending on the situation, both Rostracto , Derviche and Derviche II could also be considered conquering, and seductive fragrances.
If I have to rate my favorite Rogue Perfumery fragrances:
    1. Derviche
    3. Derviche II
    3. Tabac Vert
Original Derviche and Tabac Vert i own, i was not aware Tabac Vert is the first fragrance Manuel Cross composed.

I loved Michelyn’s Intro of Rogue Perfumery and their self taught perfumer Manuel Cross. With experience as a chef and over 9 years of training himself as a perfumer mastering his craft. I loved Steven’s interview with Manuel Cross about everything from a chef, teaching himself perfumery, and learning about the inspiration and ideas behind all of his creations to include this Rose centric masterpiece Rostracto based on an abstract cubist painting on what a Rose would look and smell like. This green, woody, and resinous rose sounds like something I would treasure. My favorite fragrance from Rogue Perfumery is Vetifleur. I am from the USA.

I am not familiar with Rogue Perfumery because unfortunately it is not sold here in Italy and so it is difficult to get hold of samples to test, but I’d love to because I have been reading with greater enthusiasm all your article featuring what seems to be like a real gem! I enjoyed very much both Michelyn’s article and Steven’s interview with Manuel Cross, I find it amazing that he was a chef and self-taught himself to become a perfumer. He seems like a truly nice person, to think that he named the brand Rogue is really interesting because he seems really shy! I love rose-scentric scents and am now very intrigued by Rostracto…the choice of the name is really super, the idea of exploring different facets of the note like abstract painters would do, break down then reassemble…it is all extremely fascinating and I would love love love to smell it!! • I loved Steven’s interview with Manuel. He seems like a really nice guy… on top of being a great perfumer. I’m always interested when someone mentions a particular rose, like Michelyn did with Bulgarian rose. I do not know the difference. My aroma palate is not sophisticated enough. But that doesn’t mean I don’t love it. I am in the US

  • Having tried the Rogue sample set, I am a big fan, and ready to try anything they produce. It’s exciting that this company exists, that someone is making scents people have wanted and needed before they knew what was possible. Watching the video, I was surprised at how relatable Mr. Cross is. And now he’s doing something new with rose— I can’t wait! I hope you have more video interviews in the future.

  • Awesome! Manuel Cross is in my top 3 favorite perfumers of all time. But Michelyn’s review taught me a lot that I didn’t know about him and Rogue Perfumery! Steven’s youtube review is excellent. He has such a fantastic way of describing the notes involved. I learn a lot from him too. My favorite Rogue is definitely Mousse Illuminee.

Rose is one of my favorite notes in perfumery, so I’m grateful for this draw! Cheers from NC, USA.

  • I was curious about all the positive attention Rogue Perfumery received last 2 years, and decided to buy the official sample set from their own website.
Rostracto i think it’s impressive, one of those fragrances that grabs you , and don’t want to let go.
I like Manuel Cross passion for cooking, and perfumes, he’s so profound in both.
In Rostracto I also like the smell if strong of rose , smoke and resins aromas . Seductive, provocative, flirtatious, I’m expecting the fragrance to smell awesome
My favorite Rogue Perfumery is Derviche II , the macerated fruits and the Cherry Liqueur are so well done, I intend to buy a bottle soon
    Thank you for the opportunity

I like the parity between the Bulgarian rose smell , and the other ingredients.
I would wear Rostracto when I’m going out, or on a date.
I remember Karl Topham called Derviche II conquering fragrance, but i think Rostracto is just as conquering, if not more

Thank you Michelyn for telling us about Manuel’s background. I did a podcast episode on the connection between food and fragrance, it’s definitely an important aspect of perfumery for me personally. I also see what you mean about the lack of aspirational pricing. While I understand that high-end perfumery is priced specifically to decrease overall ubiquity of a product and that this is nothing new when it comes to designer labels, Manuel has likely “read the room” properly in offering scents at more affordable price: this leads to more people having access to it and he’ll make it up in sales by word of mouth. I looked at this perfume on his website, he’s smart to offer different sizes, which is something else other brands don’t think about. I belong to a few fragrance subreddits and the general consensus these days is that unless you have a lot of money, people would rather have the opportunity to have MORE bottles in their collection in smaller sized bottles.

I loved that Steven was able to interview Manuel for this video. Manuel seems so humble and charming. Steven was sniffing the test strip, Steven looked like he was in heaven XD The Rogue bottles are so classy, they remind me of Floris but modernized. I’ve seen the brand on Indigo’s website but so far have not partaked. I’d love to try this. I live in the US.

  • I must admit, I am not a rose lover, not in perfume, anyways.
it’s a rare thing that mister Cross is not “aspiring” to price his perfumes equal to a small fortune, and instead, he is focusing on making unique fragrances.
that’s why I’d be happy to try one of his perfumes, why not Rostracto 🙂
    I am living in Europe.

Lovely review and introduction! What appeals to me about Rogue Perfumery Rostracto based on Michelyn’s Introduction is learning from her that Rostracto is the first rose-centric perfume for his brand. Rose-centric perfumes really appeal to me and honestly I think every brand needs one.

What appeals to me about Rostracto based on Steven’s interview is learning that he feels his fragrance taste has evolved and that a lot of his early fragrances are very vintage feeling whereas here he is branching out to more abstract rose! I appreciate learning about his evolution like that.

My favorite Rogue is Derviche. I live in the US.
