“Have you ever known a woman who has lived one hundred lives in a single breath?” – CaFleureBon reader Juniebootiemoon describes Ida Meister on CaFleureBon, April 7, 2011

66 years ago on April 7th, an amazing spirit was born; someone destined to bring joy, support,  love and care to so many of us. Ida Meister –  wife, mother, brave and dedicated nurse,  Fragrance  Evaluator, engaging and award winning writer, opera singer, polyglot and fabulous cook  to name a few – generously gives of her myriad talents every day, helping to make so many of our lives and this fragrant world a much better place.

As one of our founding editors in 2010, Ida was instrumental in CaFleureBon’s mission to set a new standard of excellence in fragrance journalism 365 days a year.  Along with Editor in-Chief Michelyn Camen and her CafleureBon colleagues (past and present), Ida has been key in developing a  worldwide community of readers, friends-in-fragrance as well as advocating and supporting independent, artisan and niche perfumers and houses. It seems only fitting that during CaFleureBon’s tenth anniversary celebration, we honor Ida on her birthday. Several years ago one of our favorite perfumers did just that!

“Ida is a dear friend who is warm and loving to all fortunate enough to cross her path. She is exciting and vivacious and yet retains the wonder of a child. I love her and wanted to create this special perfume just for her.” – Neil Morris

Neil Morris (her dear friend of many year)of Neil Morris Fragrances composed a very special perfume, in 2007 in her honor and presented it to her in 2008: Le Parfum d’Ida is a tribute to Ida Meister’s unique strength, to her generosity, classically elegant demeanor and cultured, yet down to earth, charm.

“Woman with a Basket of Fruit” by Christiaen Van Couwenbergh (17th century)

My first breath of the exotic, smoldering chypre that is Le Parfum d’Ida treats me to a lavish and generous aroma of late summer fruits – rich juicy blackberries and not quite ripe plums – spiced with a discreet touches of clove and deeply sweet, floral, musky civet. The opening reflects Ida’s bewitching and ever so sophisticated persona, her mesmerizing speaking voice and sultry charm. My initial spritz of Le Parfum d’Ida on a test strip sent curling tendrils of “come hither” olfactory melodies to the far corners of the house drawing family members like bees to honey.  “What is that gorgeous scent”, “Oh that is so beautiful” they exclaimed.

Lifted on bright aldehydes and on clean, green Elemi, Le Parfum d’Ida glides, ever so slowly closer to the skin and into a heart of flowers, a lavish bouquet of smooth luxe gardenia and ylang ylang, bright invigorating geranium, narcissus and hyacinth. Ida’s love of flowers, her talented, discriminating nose and knowledge of the musical, visual and olfactory arts are all represented for me in this charming, tastefully opulent garland of the most fragrant blossoms.

As Le Parfum d’Ida matures, the down to earth, nurturing side of Ida Meister is mirrored in the grounding, relaxing, calming properties of Indian spikenard, (jatamansi).  The woody earthen character of this ancient balm compliments the healing qualities of myrrh.  Neil Morris Fragrances Le Parfum d’Ida unfolds ever so slowly on my skin and even slower on clothing, allowing me ample time to appreciate every facet of this amazing perfume. Bold Russian leather and  powdery orris combine and contrast with balsamic black agar and root-y, grassy vetiver in the leisurely dry down.  Le Parfum d’Ida comes to rest after twelve hours (and more), oakmoss and tonka sweetly evanescent, floating on mysterious and shimmering recollections of the initial musky sensuality and animalic warmth.

Notes:  Blackberry, Clove, Elemi, Aldehydes, Geranium, Gardenia, Purple Hyacinth, Narcissus, Ylang YlangOakmoss, Vetiver, Jatamansi, Myrrh, Civet, Black Agar, OrrisRussian Leather, Castoreum, Teakwood and Tonka Bean.

Disclaimer:  I would like to thank Neil Morris for my treasured bottle of Le Parfum d’Ida (and his muse Ida Meister for her generous spirit and inspirational talent).  My opinions are my own – but I know that I share my impressions of Ida with the CaFleureBon readers and my fellow writers. On behalf of the writers and readers here at CaFleureBon – Happy birthday dear Ida!

  • What a special perfume. Happy Birthday Ida. Chypre’s are a favorite genre of mine, this one sounds very nice, I wish more fragrances utilized blackberry. I do not have any anecdotes to share, my apologies! I have yet to try a Neil Morris fragrance, however I am continually intrigued by the offerings mentioned on this blog. Thank you from Canada.

  • Michelyn, Gail, Neil!!!!!
    If I wasn’t sobbing before…I am now.
(I knew that Gail was going to review this perfume months ago, but was otherwise clueless. I just figured that it was one more review.)

Thank you all for your kindness and generosity! In these times tenderness is a craved commodity and precious, always.
    I love you each dearly.

  • I always love a fragrance that combines leather and powdery notes. This one seems to be enriched by the deepened by the addition of myrrh and animalic notes. It’s very nice to see how this perfumer created such an intriguing scent for Ida Meister to whom I wish a very happy birthday!
    I am in the USA.

  • Happy birthday Ida!!! I also adore flowers, so this scent sounds just lovely!!! Thanks for the opportunity! I’m in florida USA

  • Dearest Ida, you are a treasure to us all. I will wear Le Parfum d’Ida tomorrow on your birthday! I remember presenting it to you like it was yesterday. A moment in my life that I hold dear.
And Dear Michelyn and Gail, what a wonderful and thoughtful gift to post this review on the eve of her birthday! And thank you, Gail, for the wonderful words you wove to bring us this review. Love to all!

  • Happy birthday, dear Ida! You are truly a woman of a hundred talents, it’s always a pleasure to read your review. Stay safe and strong!
Le Parfum d’Ida … The name got me: I simply must know what Neil chose as a fragrant reflection of his friendship with Ida. Also, there’s Russian leather, need I go on?

    I live in Russia

  • Happy Birthday Ida!

What a lovely tribute to someone who seems to give 110% in so many communities and aspects of life.

Ida’s perfume appeals to me because of the depth of ingredients and the animalic notes that seem to give it “va va voom.”

From fruity to green to animalic to balsamic, rooty and grassy, it’s the rare perfume that manages to highlight so many different facets of perfume as beautifully as this perfume describes – and I suspect that it’s only fitting for someone like Ida.

    She’s definitely a multi-faceted and inspirational figure!

In Canada, and thank you for this review!

  • Happy birthday, Ida!! Wow, what a wonderful birthday gift!! And how very special that it’s created by a longtime, dear friend! Well, you had me at “smoldering chypre” but it’s only got deeper once I read blackberries, plum, cloves and civet….and as I kept reading I saw a list of pretty much every note I love. Le Parfum d’Ida sounds pretty darn near perfect! I’m so happy and excited for you! You deserve something special because you are such a special part of this community. Sounds like you got it!

Happy Birthday Ida! My mother’s birthday was yesterday and her middle name is Ida (after Ida Lupino, she says). I love chypres and the “come hither” nature of this lush warm floral scent sounds delightful; complex, high quality and elegant.

Thank you especially for your service as a nurse during this difficult time. Several of my relatives are medical professionals and their dedication to their patients is astounding. Sheltering in place in MD, USA.

  • BostonScentGuy says:

Happy birthday, Ida! This sounds wonderful–I love the sound of so many lush florals surrounded by grounding notes like woods, herbs, and leather. Sounds like a great chypre–one of my favorite genres. I have enjoyed samples of several other Neil Morris scents, including the smoky Burnt Amber and Dark Season. Thanks for the draw! I’m in the US.

  • Happiest of Birthdays Ms Ida! Your special fragrance sounds fantastic. I like that it has animalic notes. I’m a fan of your insightful articles, thank you! Mich USA

  • Camille Sheil says:

Wow! Le.Parfum d’Ida sounds full of life, yet well grounded. And a variety of life as well….life at it’s best, as is represented in the flowering Spring. The idea of drying down to Spikennard really excited me! I love that smell and don’t know if it’s used in perfumery all that often! It’s great for helping get rid of migraines as well.

Happy birthday, Ida! So many great accomplishments. For one so talented, it takes a lot to feel like you’ve accomplished only half of what you would want!

Thank you so much for this draw! I live in New Hampshire USA!

  • NiceVULady says:

Happy Birthday Ida. What an incredibly talented and caring individual you are. I have long admired your lyrical and evocative writing style and when you recommend a fragrance, I am sure to try it. Neil Morris fragrances are among my most treasured, but I missed this one. I must remedy that immediately. Thanks to Gail for this article and review. Thank you to Neil Morris for his generous draw. I’m in the USA

  • Happy birthday Ida, I hope you’ve a lovely day!

What appealed to me most was the notes combined with the description, it was almost good enough to get an olfactive view of this without smelling it , it also has many of my favourite notes all in one place. What’s not to love!

I’ve not delved into the house yet unfortunately.

    I’m from Ireland.

  • I love both Ida and Neil Morris perfumes! The base notes in this sound amazing, grounding and healing just like it’s namesake. Best wishes for a wonderful birthday Ida, sit down, put your feet up, and smell amazing! I am in Florida. She is intimately acquainted with fragrances of all kind including those of illness and health and I loved her article on scent and healing.

Happy Birthday Ida…your tribute fragrance sounds just beautiful…must be nice to have it made just for you! I live in Illinois US.

  • Julius Adams says:

HAPOY BDAY to my sister. I always knew she had a love for the wonderful scents the world provides. Even when she was little and we would visit stores, she couldn’t wait to buy a perfume with her small allowance just to be able to sniff them and enjoy the scents. I on the other hand has no clue. Congratulations to my beloved sister.

  • Happy Birthday, Ida! I love your writing. You have a way of bringing the scent to life in the imagination. Your namesake perfume sounds delightful. Fruitiness and elegance and warmth. I am in Kansas.

  • Happy birthday Ida Meister i wish you the best. The combination of blackberry civet leather and orris alone is a reason to blind buy this.

  • DespinaVnt says:

Once more, happy birthday dearest, amazing Ida.
My admiration and affection for you runs deep, especially right now, when your role as a healer places you in the front line of this global health crisis.
Stay healthy, safe and wonderful for many decades to come, and keep brightening people’s lives.
I’d be thrilled to wear a fragrance so lovingly created by a dear, talented friend of yours, like Mr. Morris.
This cornucopia of delectable fruits, narcotic flowers and a complex base sounds like an utter delight.
Love from Paris, France, and a great big kiss to the birthday girl!

  • I think it’s just so incredible sweet of Neil to dedicate a fragrance to his best friend Ida. She must be ever so humbled by this generous gift.

I would like to have a chance on winning this fragrance because I would like to offer this fragrance as a gift to my partner who is my muse like Ida is to Neil.

    Happy Birthday Ida!

  • First off Happy Birthday, and congratulations on another successful trip around the sun, Ida.
This one sounds like a bouquet of heaven on earth, and what a special thing for Neil to do this.
Many thanks, CaFleureBon for the wonderful posts every day.

What appeals to me about Le Parfum d’Ida is Bold Russian leather and powdery orris combine and contrast with balsamic black agar and root-y, grassy vetiver in the leisurely dry down. This fragrance sounds beautiful. My favorite thing about reading Ida’s incredible writing is her use of word and imagination. So many of her articles are so engaging it would be heard to pick just one that is the best for me. Hope you have a happy day. Love from California

Happy birthday Ida and being captured in fragrance must be the greatest gift! Le Parfum d’Ida has an interesting paradox between more earthly notes such as leather, vetiver and castoreum and the uplifting floral notes of hyacinth and Narcissus (!). So interesting and would love to sniff. Cheers Marit, London, UK

  • wallygator88 says:

Having read so many articles on this site, I’m fully aware of Neil’s love for florals.

This really sounds like such a beautiful olfactory chypre tribute to a dear friend.

The world needs more of this now.

    Happy Birthday, Ida!!!

    Cheers from WI, USA

Happiest of birthdays dear Ida. I bet this will be a birthday you will never forget. Hopefully there are some joyous moments mixed in with this most difficult time. The fragrance lasts 12 hours!! That probably matches Ida’s energy level given her many talents and interests. The opening of this fragrance sounds divine, especially the blackberry. I wonder if Ida still wears the fragrance that she snatched from her mother when she was young?? Thanks for the chance. Thank you Ida for your hard work now and stay well!! USA.

Thank you Gail for this very appropriate and beautiful review of the scent created for our beloved Ida. This was perfect and couldn’t have come at a better time. You definitely did it justice! Thank you Neil for your generosity and for creating such a beautiful scent for such a beautiful woman. I will be seeking this out either way! • Happy birthday Ida, here’s to many glorious, happy and fragrant years with cafleurebon and not only!
I think creating a perfume for a person is one of the most beautiful, noble and relevant expressions of love, as well as a wonderful portrayal of how the perfumer sees (smells?) that person. The description of Le Parfum d’Ida probably talks about her more than words do, and each note in the blend, as well as the general spirit of this creation describe her as a magnetic, sultry yet grounding and calm energy. I am in Europe and wish both Ida and Neil all the best once again!

  • Happy Birthday Ida!! That’s so cool that you got a perfume created after you! It sounds like a tranquil and grounding scent, which is perfect given the current climate. USA

  • Happy birthday, Ida
How wonderful to have a perfume created in your honour, to have friends who cherish the person you are.
Gail made a beautiful review to Le Parfum d’Ida, paralleling the fragrance construction to Ida’s personality.

  • Happy BIRTHDAY Ida! What a wonderful birthday gift- custome made perfume! Right now I am into leathery scents and orris is one of my favorite notes so this powdery leather sounds perfect. Thanks, I am in Germany

  • Happy Birthday Ida! Congrats on being a 2020 finalist!
What a tribute this review is and what an accomplished, lovely woman!
I would love to wear a fragrance that drew the household to ask what it was. I am accustomed to smelling pretty so I would like to “up the ante” a bit. Completely intriguing, superb notes!
I had to pay a visit to the local ER for difficulty in breathing yesterday, thanks to a virus we will leave unmentioned. I fully expected to be kept for a couple of days and was in search of a fragrance to satisfy me and not overpower anyone else. It was difficult, indeed. My arsenal needs updating.

  • VerbenaLuvvr says:

Happy Birthday Ms. Ida, I hope that your special day is lovely and memorable! Over the years following this online magazine, I would have to say that I feel most in tune with Ms. Ida’s tastes in perfumery–if she gives a highly positive review of a fragrance, then I do my best to follow up and almost always am very pleased as well. I remember reading in the past on her interest in fragrant healing and would be quite interested to read more on her thoughts in a future post. Ultimately, what draws me most to her writing is her relatability. Even as prominent and highly esteemed as she is in the perfume universe, she continues to work in the real, down to earth world along with most of the rest of us and isn’t afraid to show it, and I love her for that. Stay safe, Ms. Ida, and thank you for what you do! USA

  • The long and interesting evolution of this perfume seems like a great tribute to a person’s life. Happy Birthday Ida! I live in the USA.

  • Happy birthday Ida, you’re indeed a wonderful person. I’m happy about this special perfume especially how the opening reflects Ida’s bewitching and ever so sophisticated persona…Coming to rest after twelve hours or more.

It sounds like an opulent and complex fragrance. Like it looks back to some classic chypres and orientals from the 70s or 80s, or even some releases from Tom Ford. Maybe heavy and dense for hot weather, but should be lovely at night.
    Happy bday!
Im in the US. thanks for the draw

Ida, happy belated birthday. It was great learning about Ida and all the contributions she has made to the fragrance community, as a nurse, and in her personal life. It was so kind of Neil Morris to make this fragrance Parfum d’Ida specifically for her. This sounds beautiful a chypre with an assortment of fruits and florals that sounds truly amazing. Ida has had so many great articles and reviews on here to mention just one. I am from Ohio, USA.
