Maher Olfactive Crystal Moon (Shawn Maher) 2020 + Happy VERY Early Birthday Shawn Draw

shawn meher of meher olfactive perfumer for Crystal Moon

Shawn Maher of Maher Olfactive and Chatillon Lux

Missouri native perfumer Shawn Maher is launching a celebratory first release for his innovative new line of unique fragrances, Maher Olfactive – just in time for his birthday, which is April 28th. If you are wondering why Maher Olfactive was created in light of Shawn’s already original work at Chatillon Lux – you’re likely not alone. Shawn desired a separate space where the goal was Art for Art’s Sake – unconstrained by budgetary concerns such as cost of materials. It would also grant him freedom to release a fragrance when he felt it was truly ready (a reality which perfume lovers may not often consider). Crystal Moon is the perfumer’s birthday gift to himself: a novel interpretation of his adored osmanthus absolute encircled by aromatic materials which emphasize its tea-like, fruity fresh visage as opposed to the leathery facet we frequently encounter in perfumery.

Maher Olfactive Crystal Moon review

All of this hinges upon a Chinese legend. Here are the perfumer’s musings:

“As I was working on some early accords for this perfume, I was researching osmanthus in culture. I found a legend that really helped me finalize the feeling that I was trying to reach. That is where the idea of making this feel like living on the moon in a crystal palace.

Change'e and Wu Gang was the inspiration for Shawn Meher of Meher Olfactive

Chang’e, Goddess of the Moon and Wu Gang artgallerynsw

There was a legend of Chang’e, (goddess of the moon) a princess who was banished to live on the moon in a crystal palace. Also living there was a type of Sisyphean character named Wu Gang, who worked continually trimming a giant osmanthus tree from overtaking the palace. No matter how much he swung his ax, the tree kept healing. Giant, uncontainable osmanthus combined with a shimmering palace in the soft, lunar light? That did the trick.” ~ from Shawn Maher’s Scent Notes

Legends of Change'e the moon goddess

Giant osmanthus? Perhaps upon the first spritz you might say that; what is immediately apparent is a joyful expanse of heavenly fruit-and-flower, a profusion of elegant and comforting tones which soothe and intrigue. A Taurus’ dream…something I understand as a Taurus ascendant and Venus in Taurus person. We crave voluptuousness, fullness, comfort and the arts. Crystal Moon gives us all that and more.

Maher Olfactive Crystal Moon review

A Lady from Qing Dynasty LiFeng Di©

Imagine Osmanthus Embroidered – and not simply any needlework but an intricate, multi-hued silken web of blossoms and resin, fresh juicy fruit entangled with the chewy density of dried, wisps of wood and Ethiopian coffee swirled about in a bone china saucer. Our perfumer has tinctured his own Yirgacheffe coffee and lavender flowers in order to obtain his sought-after effect: that of this form of lavender enhancing osmanthus’ floralcy and complex coffee notes murmuring of fruit and flowers. Shawn mentions elemi and galbanum in his Scent Notes, and indeed one can smell them –  one lemony and the other effusively green, sticky. Galbanum resin and jonquil are a match made in heaven when left to couple as they wish, but in Crystal Moon they add something else: it’s as if galbanum has thrown in its lot with that of hinoki and juniper, rendering the woods verdant and incense like. Jonquil feels honeyed, juicy and imparts a beeswaxy aroma tinged with tobacco as it mellows. Berry flourishes and the peach skin of gamma-undecalactone round out Crystal Moon’s lushness. I feel as if I can’t quite do justice to the beauty and complexity of it all. This is one perfume which really requires skin in order to sing and time to allow it to unfold and reveal itself. For me, that is a marker of a fine fragrance: I want to be entranced over time like a slow seduction, insidious and potently irresistible.

Notes: osmanthus absolute, lavender flowers, jonquil absolute, Yirgacheffe coffee tincture, raspberry, hinoki, juniper, Peru balsam, dried fruit, amber resin

  • Happy birthday Shawn Maher!!! Let me just say, this scent sounds so lovely, I would be over the moon to try it! Seriously though, the story, the fact that he uses his own coffee and lavender tinctures…. and mostly the notes sound absolutely magical! I would be the happiest mama to recieve this! I’m in Florida USA thank you!!!

  • As a ‘wet shaver’ I’m very well acquainted with Chattilon Lux. It’s interesting to see those who were in this industry moving towards fragrances – such as William Carius from Barrister and Mann. I enjoyed the lore included in this fragrance, I appreciate it when an effort is made for a scent to capture a concept in addition to ‘smelling good’. Thanks as always for the draw. In from Canada!

  • Joshteriyaki1 says:

HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!! also great review from Ida. Very nice description of the notes. Crystal moon sounds complex and amazing. The story about the goddess of the moon also sounds interesting. I have not tried anything from Shawn Maher would love to try this.

  • Trinity33 says:

Happy Birthday Shawn! Osmanthus is one of those notes that I love but too often feels like a supporting player in the fragrances I’ve tried. The addition of jonquil and galbanum sounds like it gives the composition a honeyed wood grounded character. It sounds like a labor of love. I’ve never tried any Maher Olfactive scents before but would love to! Sheltering in place in MD, USA.

What’s there not to love about Ida’s review? The Chinese legend has beautifully crazy imagery, and is super provocative as an inspiration for a fragrance. Her attempt to describe its complexity is so evocative. I want to figure out a way to smell it even if I don’t win the bottle. Happy birthday, Shawn! May the coming year be productive and happy for you. I don’t know any of your fragrances, but I am now eager to try. I am in the US, in North Carolina.

  • Happy Birthday Shawn. The notes alone look super intriguing. Ida’s description makes this even more appealing, The highlight was “Intricate, multi-hued silken web of blossoms and resin, fresh juicy fruit entangled with the chewy density of dried, wisps of wood and Ethiopian coffee swirled about in a bone china saucer.” How can you resist?! Sounds fantastic. Regards from the USA.

  • whatabout6 says:

    Happy birthday Shawn.
The thing that appeals to me most is the complexity of Crystal Moon and having experienced some of the offerings from Chattilon Lux I know it won’t disappoint.
    Cheers

26 days! 26 days! I am so excited about this! I hope he has samples available on his website when he launches the full bottles. I am a huge osmanthus fan, but it is very hard to find an osmanthus-forward fragrance, I’m sure because it’s such an expensive material. Usually it’s shadowed by something else… but after Ida’s beautiful review, I am really looking forward to the release of this. Thank you for telling us about Shawn’s new venture. I once lived in Missouri, which makes this extra special as well. Thank you!!! USA.

  • Oh my Ida, you hit the nail on the head!!!

“…a profusion of elegant and comforting tones which soothe and intrigue. A Taurus’ dream…something I understand as a Taurus ascendant and Venus in Taurus person. We crave voluptuousness, fullness, comfort and the arts. Crystal Moon gives us all that and more.”

Osmanthus is a note I adore (I’ve been carefully rationing my Diptyque Shanghai candle as the pandemic started) and coffee, lavender, hinoki and peach are all other scents that always draw me in. This sounds divine and right up my Taurus alley!

I would love to be able to try this scent. Thank you for this drool-worthy review!

    From Canada.

  • yes, happy birthday to shawn! i enjoyed reading that he “tinctured his own Yirgacheffe coffee and lavender flowers in order to obtain a sought-after effect”. grateful for the draw in california

  • Looks like this composition consists of my favorite notes: galbanum, coffee, lavender, osmanthus. Ida, thank you for the review! Shawn, happy birthday to you!

  • I am quite drawn to this scent that combines interesting notes like osmanthus and jonquil absolutes, coffee tincture, fruits and dried fruits, and amber. And what a beautiful name. Happy birthday to the perfumer! I haven’t had a chance to try his creations but would like to. I am in the USA.

  • Happiest of Birthdays Mr Shawn! Crystal Moon sounds like a heavenly fragrance. I enjoyed reading about the inspiration behind it, especially about the osmanthus that couldn’t be tamed. Mich USA

  • NiceVULady says:

Ida’s prose again illuminates this beautiful moon fragrance. I am delighted with the story as it captures so much of the feeling.of this scent. A very happy birthday to Shawn. Many thanks for this glorious review and a most truly generous draw. I’m in the USA

Happy early birthday to Shawn Maher!!!! My best wishes to You! I get so excited and intrigued by latest work, new irresistable, seductive fragragrance “Crystal Moon” of talented, unique artisan Perfumer Shawn Maher (Shatillon Lux) Would love to try this amazing fragrance a specially after reading Ida Meister poetical, lovely review, where she described complexity and beauty of Crystal Moon. “All of this hinges upon a Chinese legend. Here are the perfumer’s musings:

“As I was working on some early accords for this perfume, I was researching osmanthus in culture. I found a legend that really helped me finalize the feeling that I was trying to reach. That is where the idea of making this feel like living on the moon in a crystal palace.” I got really curious about Crystal Moon and I like to read more about this legend of Change’e the Goddess of the Moon ! Thank you Ida Meister for another lovely review! Thank you Shawn Maher for your generous gift Crystal Moon to winner of this worldwide draw! Good luck to everyone

  • sanvean79 says:

Wow, this sounds like my dream osmanthus. I enjoyed reading about the legend inspiring the fragrance, and it’s amazing that artisanal tinctures were used.
I’m not familiar with any of his work, so will investigate… In the meantime, happy early birthday to Shawn!

  • Happy birthday Shawn , best wishes on your day! Sláinte.

What I enjoyed most about ida’s review was how considerate it was explaining shawns vision / inspiration and love for this fragrance. The fact he wanted it to be the best version of it because it was for himself is great to see that kind of passion in perfumery.

    I’m from Ireland. Eu.

Ida’s review makes the frag sound fantastic. Easy blind buy imo.

  • Happy birthday Shawn, this sounds like a gem. A would love to experience the beauty and the complexity myself. I really love osmanthus and this one sounds like a must try. Would be great to win this! Living in the EU

  • I have a difficult relationship to floral perfumes, but this one sounds lovely. I had the pleasure to smell the raw Osmanthus absolute brought by Vero Kern when she presented her then new Naja, and I was instantly fascinated by its complexity. Also, the inspiration from that Sysiphus like legend is comprehensible, great.

I haven’t met anything from Shawn yet, so I’d love to win Crystal Moon to Germany, thanks for the draw! Happy very early birthday!

  • Notes: osmanthus absolute, lavender flowers, jonquil absolute, Yirgacheffe coffee tincture, raspberry, hinoki, juniper, Peru balsam, dried fruit, amber resin all the notes sound sumptuous and beautiful I agree that this fragrance has to be worn on skin to fully appreciate. Thanks from the United Kingdom

  • Wishing Shaun a very Happy Birthday and I have not tried anything by this house. Thanks a million from the United Kingdom

  • Wishing Shaun a very Happy Birthday I am intrigued by the notes especially jonquil absolute, Yirgacheffe coffee tincture. I loved the story behind this fragrance it is a brand I would love to explore further. Thanks from UK

  • First I’d like to wish a very happy early birthday to Sean Maher! I really liked that this is centered around osmanthus and meant to be as if living in a crystal palace on the moon. It sounds so intriguing and as if it truly takes one on a journey. I have only tried one of Sean’s perfumes and that is Chatillon Lux Weinstrasse which is of course very nice but also sounds very different to Crystal Moon. I live in CT USA. Thanks for the generous draw.

  • Laurentiu says:

Happy Birthday! Many interesting notes there! I always liked the combination of coffee and lavander and I am sure I will like this one as well if I were to win.
    Thank you!

  • Aroma of fruit and coffee masterfully united, all this seems very attractive with the reference to oriental traditions.I really like osmanthus and I have never tried any Chatillon Lux perfume.
Very good the creator of this fragrance and …. HAPPY BIRTHDAY !!!!!!
    Linda – UE

  • The magical joining of “coffee” and “flowers” made my heart go wild! These days, because of the fact that I work in a hospital, little are the things that make my heart giggle with joy, but this review and the idea of an avant premiere perfume …oh my!

Shawn, remember that you are doing a great thing, creating experiences and memories for us, throughout your perfumes! It is very special to be a creator of anything, but especially if you create art, as you do! Happy birthday and many more olfactory creations!

I don’t own an Chatillon Lux or Maher Olfactive perfume and never had the change to smell one, but I have read about them and I think that I would love to sniff around some Nefertiti because of the mix of honey and coniferous incense.

Thanks for all, Ida! Valentina, Romania

  • Phoenixad says:

Happy birthday Shawn Maher i wish you the best. I havent tried anything from this house thanks to Cafleurebon though i definitely will. Crystal moon’s note breakdown looks appealing to my taste. Im in Europe, Greece

  • I’m interested in this because Shawn tinctured his own coffee and lavender flower

  • Eric Oden says:

The thing that appeals to me most is the interpretation of the legend. Also, I really like most of the stuff I’ve smelled that Shawn composes. I live in Montana.

  • I love Osmanthus, and as someone who has Chinese heritage, I’m excited to see what this one is like! Happy early birthday Shawn Maher! Its a crazy time to be alive but new releases always brings me excitement and joy. USA

  • Happy birthday Shawn!! And to be honest, this is one of the most intriguing perfumes I have read about in a while. I’ve always been fascinated with east asian culture ever since I began my martial arts training as a boy, but the connection seems to go deeper than that. The mythology, lifestyle and core values just seem to mesh well with my own. But reading Ida’s description of Crystal Moon awakens within me a newfound anticipation for experiencing such a quixical combination of notes. For example, I’ve never smelled jonquil, but if it really does resemble a waxy honeyed tobacco, I desperately need to give it a sniff. With the addition of fruits, florals, citrus, green notes and a strange coffee, it’s no wonder it needs skin to sing! A superbly written review. What a journey! Canada.

  • Happy birthday Swan Maher!!! All the best to you.
Ida, it’s very beautiful review! Legend about Change is very interesting. I want to test this perfume around osmanthus absolute which have tea-like, fruity undertones.
    From Armenia.

  • Happy birthday and Swoon! This sounds so beautiful I love osmanthus and then to have hinoki, juniper and Galbanum just sounds perfect. I’ve never tried any of these houses and would love to be included in the drawer. I am in the U.K.

  • I’m lucky to have a sample of Crystal Moon and think it’s wonderful. I enjoyed Ida’s description of the ingredients as my untrained nose can’t pick them all out. Thanks very much for your review! I’m in Alberta, Canada

  • Happy birthday, Shawn Maher! This sounds amazing. If Ida feels like her words can’t do it justice, then I have to try it! I am in the US

  • wallygator88 says:

Happy Birthday Shawn. I’ve been a fan of your scents ever since I got into the wetshaving world and have followed your journey into perfumery both from a budget standpoint and then into more extravagant fragrances and now the full blown, unrestrained perfume house that you are building.

I’m really looking forward to sampling Crystal Moon and I know that like all your other fragrances, I’ll be a huge fan. The notes in this one sound just divine.

    Cheers!

  • We do indeed crave voluptuousness, fullness, comfort and the arts! If we are lucky enough those cravings are met! It sounds as if Shawn has found a creative artform to fill our cravings. Thanks, Ida for the beautiful post, CaFleureBon for always being there to lift our spirits each day, and to Shawn for his generosity. Happy Early Birthday, Shawn.

  • chrisskins says:

A perfume made with passion without budgetary constraints – always very exciting. I love the picture that cemented the inspiration as well as flower/fruit start and the lengthy unfolding thereafter. All that and the name Crystal Moon. ::: Shivers::: Happy Birthday, Shawn. I’d love to try this fragrance as the first of your creations. I live in NY.

  • Happy birthday, Shawn! Stay safe & ever so creative!
I love the legend! Is it weird that the invincible osmanthus fascinates me even more than the reasons behind Chang’e’s exile.
Ida never fails to describe a perfume in a way that makes me want to smell it immediately; I’m not sure I’ve tried another floral-centric perfume with hinoki AND coffee, so now I have to!

Unfortunately, I’m not familiar with Shawn’s body of work but I’d really love a chance to try something from Chatillon Lux or Maher Olfactive perfume.

    Stay safe, everyone! Russia

  • The idea of having a brand just to follow your inspiration regardless of constraints is appealing. It seems it has resulted in a very refined scent that I would like to experience on my own skin. I hope Shawn Maher has a very happy birthday. I live in the USA.

  • I was having a lovely read, but when you mentioned “lavender enhancing osmanthus’ floralcy and complex coffee notes murmuring of fruit and flowers” you piqued my interest beyond believe.

I love everything about that sentence and hope to have a chance to try it out myself.

I live in the United Kingdom

  • It is a beautiful fragrance. I was lucky enough that Shawn sent me a sample with my last purchase. Floral, some berries and amber. In my skin the berries stand out with a waxy texture. Love Shawn work.
    I live in Puerto Rico.

  • bigscoundrel says:

The blend of osmanthus, woods, and Ethiopian coffee sounds great. I’m very interested to try it. New Jersey, USA.

  • Shawn’s imagery of a princess living in a castle on the moon, with Wu Gang chopping the giant osmanthus tree is a beautiful one. Was Wu Gang having coffee to revive himself too for the hard labor, or that is Shawn’s kind offering to the tired Wu Gang? Liked the images shown in Ida’s review. Notes osmanthus absolute, lavender flowers, Yirgacheffe coffee tincture, hinoki, juniper, amber resin sound delightful – I hope that I can try Crystal Moon on my skin. Happy Birthday Shawn and thanks for the wonderful drawing. Writing from USA.

  • Happy creative and healthy birthday Shawn! I have not tried any of Sawn’s fragrances but would love to. I enjoyed the way Ida describes this Taurus’s scent with Embroidered Osmanthus , multi -hued and coffee as well. Love her descriptions. Stay Well. USA

  • Natalya Baranova says:

I love nearly all of the notes, and yet cannot imagine what a total is like. The reference to the Chinese legend is fascinating. Would love to win this. I live in Maryland.

  • Camille Sheil says:

Happy early birthday Shawn! This most certainly is one of the best birthday gifts you could give…art for arts sake! In my own personal life, these are the very best gifts, even though they often can take a lot longer to complete. You tend to find something or become aware of new things this way!

I love Ida’s descriptions of the notes, comparing them to intricate embroidery. I love that it’s a perfume that depends heavily in skin and time to develop. There’s an opportunity to develop much more of a relationship that way as well.

I have never sampled any Chatillon Lux fragrances or Maher Olfactive fragrances. This would be a first, if I should win….and an honor to hold a work of art….for arts sake! Thanks so much!

I live in New Hampshire USA!

  • I love coffee notes – really, really love it. I was surpised at how well it works with floral notes; whether mixing flower waters in coffee to drink, or mixed in fragrances (like cafe tuberosa).
I havent tried any from the house.
    Happy birthday and stay healthy.
Im in the US. thanks for the draw

  • Happy birthday to Mr. Maher. It’s so kind of him to offer a bottle of this beautiful-sounding, sold out scent. I adore lavender, coffee, and osmanthus as notes, and I’m always impressed by perfumers who create their own tincture. The Chang’e legend is fascinating, as well. I’m in the US.

  • Hello, I am from Illinois, USA, and this fragrance sounds beautiful. Just to start, I wish a happy early birthday to Shawn (it just so turns out that his birthday is the day before mine!). I love that Shawn was able to take as much time as he needed, and that he was not limited in the materials that he used. I am a big fan of green fruity fragrances, and the fragrance sounds very compelling. I love that the fragrance embodies craftsmanship and it sounds truly stunning.

  • Happy early birthday Shawn, wish you much creativity and health!
The presentation of the Oriental legend was beautiful. I didn’t know the story before and the image of an ever growing osmanthus tree is very powerful. About the perfume itself, “multi-hued silken web of blossoms and resin, fresh juicy fruit entangled with the chewy density of dried, wisps of wood and Ethiopian coffee swirled about in a bone china saucer” sounds quite unique. This would be my first experience from either house. I am in the EU. Thanks for the draw!

  • Happy birthday Shawn! I love osmanthus too, particularly when it doesn’t go too leathery so this sounds right up my street. Sadly I haven’t tried any Chatillon Lux perfumes yet but they are very much on the list! I am in the UK

  • TE Withrow says:

A very Happy Birthday Shawn! Crystal Moon sounds absolutely beautiful! I don’t have any osmanthus scents in my collection…I live in Illinois US.

  • Happy Birthday, Shawn! I was lucky enough to snag the last bottle of your limited edition perfume “ Madame Chouteau” for American Perfumer. It’s the first peach scent that doesn’t smell weird on my skin so I know you are very skilled! Thank you Ida, for the wonderful article. I love reading about influences in the perfume making process. And thank you Çafleurebon for the give away! I’m in California

  • Monica Beaton says:

As always, Ida captures a fragrance image of the scent as no one else can. Weaving the notes through a wonderful story brings a fragrance to life. This fragrance sounds like something truly special. Thank you Ida for a wonderful review, and Happy Birthday Shawn (and thank you for such a generous giveaway!). I live in Australia.

  • Lamplight Penace, my first Shawn Miller fragrance was a challenge. I never smelled anything like it before and yet the smell was very familiar. I like that he tries interesting scent profiles. Nefertiti is also one of my favorites. Unbeknownst to me it was a favorite of my cousin’s as well and he decided to “borrow” it. I’m really looking forward to Crystal Moon on my skin. May Shawn have a blessed birthday and be thankful that he has been granted another year. USA

  • Happy [early] birthday, Shawn! 🙂
Ida is painting an olfactory imagery with notes and words. But that is, imho, the pharse that summs up the best the fragrance – “This is one perfume which really requires skin in order to sing and time to allow it to unfold and reveal itself”.
Unfortunately I’m not familiar with neither Chatillon Lux or Maher Olfactive fragrances, but man, I would like to be :).
    I live in Europe.

The notes sound incredible and I love the addition of coffee. Happy birthday to Mr. Maher! I loved reading this gorgeous review and would love to smell this fragrance. Thank you for the draw. I’m in the US.

Happy, happy bday Shawn. Yirgacheffe coffee is one of my favorites – floral and sweet. Hat tip to Shawn for using a proprietary Yirgacheffe tincture to capture the beauty of these beans. VA, USA.

  • Perfume often evokes a connection to a texture – silky, wispy, dense, and so on – but I have never thought of an embroidered scent. I’m fascinated by this idea and thank Ida for describing Crystal Moon this way.

I adore the way lavender can bridge fragrant notes, it does not always shout, and so Crystal Moon is a scent I would love to experience.

Happy Birthday to Shawn, and thank you for sharing Crystal Moon with CaFleureBon. I have not tried anything from Chatillon Lux or Maher Olfactive, hope that will change someday soon. I am in the US.

  • Michael Prince says:

Ida, I loved your review of Crystal Moon. This sounds beautiful with an Osmanthus, fruity/floral experience, with coffee and resins. It sounds really delightful with a vivid description and references explained by Ida. I am from Ohio, USA. Shawn Maher have a happy and creative birthday.

Happy Early Birthday Shawn! What a lovely gift to give ones self… this sounds fascinating and captivating. What better way then to have a gift for yourself reviewed by the lovely Ida. Shawn’s work is stunning…. I have tried several and purchased 2. I have Weinstrasse and Biblio… both stunning works of art! I have tried several others from the line that also need to be added to my collection because they are equally beautiful. Then there are a few more from Chatillon Lux that I plan on blind buying just because they sound amazing and because I know they will be great due to the masterful nose behind them. Thank you Ida, for your beautiful words about Crystal Moon and for giving us your take on it. I really appreciate the write-up and look forward to the next. Thank you Shawn for your generosity. It is greatly appreciated! Thank you for your wonderful skills as well… without them we would not have these fascinating works of art to ponder on. Thank you, as always, to Michelyn for making this all possible! You are appreciated more than you know! Commenting from Delaware, US. Good luck to all and stay safe friends!

  • Happy Birthday Shawn! Great review by Ida and I always enjoy her descriptive prose. I love the complexity in Crystal Moon and it sounds absolutely amazing. This was my favorite line: “Intricate, multi-hued silken web of blossoms and resin, fresh juicy fruit entangled with the chewy density of dried, wisps of wood and Ethiopian coffee swirled about in a bone china saucer.” I was sold and intrigued at the same time. Thanks for the giveaway and I live in the US!
