Les Bains Guerbois Oud Laqué review

If you are familiar with Paris in the 1980’s, Les Bains Douches probably rings a bell. At that time, it was one of the most famous nightclub in the world, a former spa ”de luxe” created in 1885 that has had a third life since 2015, when it became a magnificent 5 stars boutique Hotel. Jean-Pierre Marois, its owner, is passionate about perfumes, and that is probably why he launched first a Cologne and a candle, followed from 2017 by Eaux de Parfums dedicated to Les Bains Guerbois history’s key dates of nine fragrances (including Les Bains Guerbois 1992 Purple Night and Les Bains Guerbois 1986 Eclectic).  February 25th was a big day for the brand as it debuted a new collection called “Formes et Matières” (shapes and material)” that highlights the decorative characteristics of Les Bains used in the rooms and halls that have been welcoming lovers of the place for several decades.

Les Bains Guerbois Damier (Checkboard), created by Fanny Bal ( who signed Les Bains Guerbois 2018 Roxo Tonic) is a nod to the spa-then-nightclub-then-hotel floors made of small two-tone tiles. A fragrance playing on contrasts of course, with the black tiles symbolized by black pepper, pink pepper and patchouli and the white ones by jasmine and musk. These sharp facets find an elegant transition thanks to an aldehyde opening and are quickly coated, without being suffocated, by sandalwood, Virginia cedar and cashmeran. Fanny Bal’s composition is hot and cold, woody and peppery, like Yin and Yang.

Les Bains Guerbois Oud Laqué (Lacquered Oud) is the second fragrance of this new collection. Created by Mathieu Nardin (and his first collaboration with the brand), it is a tribute to the precious wood decor in rooms and bedrooms at Les Bains Paris. A fragrance of great sensuality, silky and warm flirting between spicy, leathery, flowery and balmy notes.  Composed by the perfumer with great precision, they intertwine in light and subtle swirls that delight the senses and could be compared with wood’s grain.

Les Bains Guerbois Oud Laqué is a skin fragrance, irresistible from its opening. I first perceive an accord of dried fruits of undeniable delicacy, enveloping and warm. My olfactory memories  transport me to the blond tobacco used by my father’s pipe-smoking friends, a smell that fascinated me as a child decades ago, and which still causes in me a stir worthy of a Proust madeleine. Then another familiar smell tickles my nose: that of waxed wood with encaustic, where a spicy freshness and the roundness of a precious wood mingle. This reminds me of our lacquered wooden baby grand piano which sat in the living room; my father personally took care of its luster with a little wax and a leather cloth. Here, clove and guaiac wood combine perfectly with cardamom to reproduce this other olfactory memory, playing on the contrasts between a powdery freshness and woody and balsamic scents that give it body. Les Bains Guerbois Oud Laqué continues its rise with a note of leather close to suede, on the border of animality, which adds a sensation I would compare with velvet. Les Bains Guerbois Oud Laqué remains in the specific elegance and sophistication of lacquered wood, with raw materials that match with finesse and warmth. In the middle of these woods, spices and dried fruits, I spot a flowery facet of great silkiness, but still very perceptible. Mathieu Nardin had the idea of poetizing his creation with a delicate and sensual note of geranium, which sneaks discreetly over the skin, without overshadowing the other raw materials. It is the high point of Les Bains Guerbois Oud Laqué, just before the balmy benzoin and the woody and smoky tones of gurjum seal all these noble materials in a skin scent that vibrates until the end of the night.

With this new collection dedicated to the shapes and materials that make up the identity of Les Bains Paris, Jean-Pierre Marois working with young up-and-coming perfumers. For Les Bains Guerbois Oud Laqué, Mathieu Nardin inaugurates his first collaboration with the brand with a sophisticated and sensual yet easy-to-wear fragrance, which I could define as a mirror of olfactory memories of my life. A mirror, like the reflection of lacquered wood.

Notes: cardamom, dried fruits, geranium, leather, clove, benzoin, guaiac wood, gurjum balsam.

Disclaimer: A huge “merci” to Les Bains Guerbois for the Oud Laqué bottle provided for this review. The opinions expressed are my own.

  • Thank you Emmanuelle for your generosity.
I liked the comparison of Damier and Oud Laque to certain characteristics of the hotel Les Bains Paris, whether the two tone tiles of the floor or the wood features and furniture. Looking forward to experiencing this fragrance soon.

  • 1986 Eclectique was my best discovery of last year and has become the closest thing to a signature scent for me. I ran out and bought the discovery set and I have to say that this house puts out high quality fragrances. Though 1986 took me in a new direction, Oud Laque sounds like an old love with notes I am very familiar with. I would love to get a chance to experience LBGs take on a proper woody spicy scent. Thank you, from Idaho USA

  • I enjoyed reading about how Les Bains Guerbois Oud Laqué kindled many fond memories of childhood for Emmanuelle. This is what perfumes do so wonderfully. Les Bains Guerbois Oud Laqué seems to be sophisticated, elegant perfume, from Emmanuelle’s review. Would love to try it. Thanks Emmanuelle for her generosity in sharing her love for this perfume through a draw. Writing from the USA.

I really liked reading about the backstory for this perfume. As for the notes, I don’t like them as much. I can’t say I will go out of my way to try this fragrance, but I really think the backstory is quite lovely. Kind regards from IN, USA.

  • I love when a fragrance can take you somewhere, not just the place the creator intended but also to places within your own world and memory. Like a good piece of art. In maryland.

  • This is what intrigues me most in this review: “it is a tribute to the precious wood decor in rooms and bedrooms at Les Bains Paris. A fragrance of great sensuality, silky and warm flirting between spicy, leathery, flowery and balmy notes. “. This and the idea of lacquered oud.

Really fascinating review Emmanuelle! This seems like a very architectural fragrance as a nod to the decor of two tone tiles in Les Bains Douches. The black and white contrasts using pepper and patchouli or jasmine and musk is a great concept. Thanks for sharing your bottle as a decant! MD, USA.

  • Thank you Emmanuelle, for offering the decant from your own bottle. It sounds dreamy. I love the smell of lacquered woods. Interesting brand concept as well.

Guaiac wood is my favourite woody note in fragrances, i am sure this would be right up my alley. Thank you for the opportunity, great review! From Romania, EU.

  • Scent is so evocative of time and place, and I appreciate Emmanuelle’s childhood memories. I am a little obsessed with everything cardamom right now, and intrigued by the wood and dried fruits. I’d love to try this new scent from a young artist.

I love the idea of being able to associate the name of a perfume with a personal memory like the polished surface of the piano. I have had both a piano and the lacquered furniture featuring strongly in my younger years so I can really appreciate the sentiment. Love the notes, very curious to find out how gurjum balsam smells. Thank you from Dublin, Ireland, EU

  • Jeremy Upshaw says:

Wow. This sounds like a really intriguing array of soft silk, spice and woodiness – I’ve really been turned on by some laquery wood fragrances that evoke memories playing an old antique upright piano as a child (bowmakers by DS&D was one of the first that made me really perk up and remember running my fingers along the old wood grain and ivory keys as a child) but this sounds like it’s an even more rich blend, I’m looking forward to catching a whiff of this! I really appreciated Emmanuel’s review, as it was very thorough and informative, especially about Les Bains Guerbois for the Oud Laqué. I’m not really into skin scents, her review (along with the listed notes) makes want to experience that fragrance.

I loved reading Emmanuelle’s review of Les Bains Guerbois Oud Laqué. I really enjoying learning about the history of Les Bains Guerbois as well as Jean-Pierre Marois, Les Bains Guerbois founder and Mathieu Nardin, Mane perfumer. Oud Laque sounds really interesting with the dried fruits, pipe tobacco, suede leather, and a unique lacquered wood. This sounds like something I would really enjoy. I am from the USA.

  • Emma did a great job of making me interested in not just this fragrance, but the house in general! Big fan of many of the notes listed so I would be intrigued to have the chance to try this nuanced fragrance. Their packaging looks very elegant and classy, definitely can see how Jean-Pierre was inspired to curate the brand. I live in California, USA.

  • I’ve never heard of Les Bains Paris and am very jealous that this scent would present an olfactory mirror of her memories. This place sounds dreamy and so does the perfume. I am in the US.

This is such an interesting concept. perfumes based on the decor. The description of Oud Laqué as a “skin scent” is especially interesting to me, since most our fragrances tend to be anything but. I’d love to try it. I live in California, USA.

  • I would love to try this fragrance: I can like a lot of its notes, especially cloves. I haven’t tried anything yet which was made by perfumer Mathieu Nardin, but just today I ordered a Molinard fragrance called “Figue” which is said to have been made by him and I’m very much looking forward to trying it. Emmanuelle’s review caused me to be intrigued to try this other fragrance which was made by Mathieu, and I thank Emmanuelle for her generosity. I’d like to finally try something from this fragrance house. I live in the U.S.A. Thanks for the giveaway opportunity.

  • Excellent review Emmanuelle who had me intrigue by her comparison of a fragrance to the lacquer of a grand piano. The scent must be super sensual.

Thanks for the great review Emmanuelle. I love how personal and filled with intimate memories this review brings us. The mention of a sensual geranium in the midst if all the heavy notes is a feat.

Great review Emmanuelle! What I enjoyed about Emmanuelle’s review is how vividly she describes how the fragrance brings her back to her childhood memories, the spicy freshness of precious woods reminding her of the lacquered wooden baby grand piano in the living room, while the blond tobacco brought to life memories of her father and his pipe smoking friends, and notes of leather evoking the meticulous care her father gave the precious family gem. These rich notes and accords bring rich and beautiful images and memories, and that is definitely something that attracts me to this fragrance. I live in the US.
