The number four bears the weight of a symbolism that traverses cultures, beliefs, and epochs, standing as a universal emblem of stability and balance. The wholeness of the universe, the four elements, the four seasons, and the four cardinal points – connect us all. And what better way of conveying the feeling of being anchored to the present moment than the vision of an infinite landscape, the one universal starting point, the cradle of humanity?

“Kajal IV is a celebration of nomadic exoticism, echoing the wilderness of the African Savannah. The warm embrace of the Sahara breeze. The intoxicating allure of adventure. Infinite grains of sand form an undulating golden panorama, vast and untamed, blending harmoniously into spectacular glowing skies. Sun-kissed skin shimmers, evocative of the celestial stars soon to emerge. The gentle caress of a sultry, aromatic breeze encapsulates the elation of adventure. Our footprints may be a momentary reminder of our presence, but the memories we make last forever.” – a note from the brand.

The perfumer who was chosen to take on this task was Kevin Mathys from CPL Aromas Dubai. Kevin’s fragrant journey began in the beautiful landscapes of the French countryside, where, from a tender age, he was fascinated by the world of scents. One of his first fragrant memories was playing with all the colognes he could put his hands on and mixing and combining them. For Kévin, fragrances aren’t merely scents; they are emotional triggers that enable him to have a small but meaningful part in people’s lives and his creations draw inspiration from the richness of everyday life, be it a cherished memory, a soul-stirring song, or the breathtaking beauty of the natural world.

“If I have ever seen magic, it has been in Africa,” said John Hemingway. Having Africa on my bucket list, it’s not the first time that I had the mental exercise of imagining its smell, the sense of home that transcends time, distilled to its purest essence. I inhale and see the vision in Kajal IV.
The African sun ascends on the horizon, casting its warm embrace over the undulating sea of golden sand, untamed, unending. As the first rays of the sun touch the earth, crimson pale clouds slowly lift, making the endless horizon even vaster, with the last stars in the sky, shimmer, pale, banished by the light of the all-conquering sun.
Dubbed as being one of the “chameleon notes” in the world of perfumery, davana is the first ingredient that makes its present felt –powerful, warm, mixing its multifaceted richness with the boozy sweetness of rum and the deep purple-green aura of cassis. There is a hint of a camphoraceous undercurrent, the thread that whispers of distant open spaces that bring closer the call of adventure.

The sun ascends, a blazing noonday fire in the African sky, casting its fiery rays on the earth. Hot leather notes mix in with the exotic sweetness of blooming jasmine and palm flowers, arid, vibrant, sun-drenched, with the lines of the horizon trembling in the heat rising from the sun-scorched earth. The landscape, in the red hours of noon seems to have been painted on a hot canvas, with hasty strokes, and now the edges are softly melting, blending the colours together into rusty shades of hot.
The journey then leads us to a realm brimming with the lushness of nature’s treasures, an enchanting sweet Eden, in a rapid time-lapse that reminds me of a photograph taken with a slow shutter speed. The long light trails of the setting sun are transposed into warm notes of vanilla and musk, with lush palm trees and soft blurred shadows. A sweet freshness that is both exotic and tantalizing comes from the ripe sweet aroma of Khalas dates, the fruit of paradise.

Kajal IV is a bold and multifaceted play, centered around the leather note. Unique, strong, with powerful projection and a comfortable and cozy boozy-sweet warm bubble, it makes for a wonderful perfume for cold weather. It is intense enough to draw all eyes on you, if you choose it to pair it to a jaw-dropping outfit on your nights out, and yet smooth and deliciously introspective, making it a perfect partner on your moonlit solitary walks.
