Kajal Yasmina (Valerie Garnuch-Mentzel) 2018 + “Scented Sails” Giveaway

 Kajal Yasmina

Kajal Yasmina is an under rated gem from the brand’s Wardé Collection (includes Jihan, Joorie, and Warde), all taking inspiration from the floral world, and reinterpreting them into blends that not only capture the essence of their blooms but also have the opulent and complex structure, characteristic of the brand.

Kajal Yasmina review

Official brand photos, collage by Nicoleta

As with many perfumes from the Kajal line, it all started with a memory: “My childhood memories of jasmine are strongly linked to my grandmother – calling out to me to run into the gardens at the break of dawn to pick figs from the tree in our farmhouse. I remember running to the tree through weeds of chamomile, thistles, and dandelions. I would climb the first branches to get to the softer, juicier figs at the top, and I would take care not to get some of the white sap on the stem of the fruit onto my skin. But the most important part came next –after filling the bowl with enough fruit, it was imperative that I run to the jasmine tree and carefully pick the delicate flowers. I’d fill the bowl with jasmine so that the figs barely showed. The scent would fill my nose, and I remember even sucking on the base of the cut flowers to get a very mild sweetness from the nectar.”Moe Khalaf (Founder & Kajal Creative Officer). The one who turned the memory into reality was perfumer Valérie Garnuch-Mentzel of Givaudan.

Valérie Garnuch-Mentzel composes her creations in a way I very much resonate with – there is a French effortless elegance that makes her scents luminous and chic –although her attraction to the darker spectrum of raw materials is evident.  Also, woven in the fabric of the scent, we find the the spirit of German rigueur, symmetry, and an architectural balance in the technical aspects of the scent, and the way they perform. And although opulent, the natural elements in her creations shine, effervescent, conveying the feeling of wide open spaces.

The Meeting of Antony and Cleopatra Lawrence Alma-Tadema 1885 common use

Kajal Yasmina is a dark and rich fragrance that announces your presence in the most grand way. Immediately my mind went to the story about Cleopatra’s ship, there, where it was said she perfumed her boat’s sails with jasmine, on her way to meet Marc Anthony. Talk about sillage and making a head turning entrance!

“Purple the sails, and so perfumed that

The winds were lovesick with them; the oars were silver,

Which to the tune of flutes kept stroke, and made

The water which they beat to follow faster,

As amorous of their strokes.” William Shakespeare Antony and Cleopatra, Act II, Scene II

In the first hour, the scent is an extroverted and opulent floral bouquet that blooms, with scarlet rose petals opening to an explosion of dry spices, with saffron and cardamom weaving a commanding aura with hefty projection. The beautiful interplay between the seemingly delicate jasmine and the bold spices that crown its presence now turns to another path, with the leather notes playing beautifully with the animalic facets of jasmine.

An unexpected booziness from the golden warmth of whiskey and an earthy powdery mood brought on by the iris take the fragrance to a new realm, on a more inward, introspective path. Patchouli comes into play, together with tonka beans, giving it a milky and creamy softness that veers towards an exotic, smoky gourmand. In the base note, there’s a radiant embrace of amber, casting its golden, resinous warmth for hours on end.

Elizabeth Taylor and Mark Anthony in Cleopatra 1963

Yasmina is a complex perfume that is hard to place into one category and assign a clear label to – although the name, presentation, and opening would lead you to think it’s an ambery floral, its spicy strong character is prevalent throughout its evolution. Striking a perfect balance between natural softness and exotic depth, with boozy whiskey, smooth leathery facets, and smoky hypnotic sweetness, this fragrance manages to be both intimate and atmospheric and an excellent unisex choice for the autumn days to come.

Top notes are Cardamom, Saffron and Rose; Middle notes are Jasmine, Leather, Whiskey and Orris; Base notes are Tonka Bean, Patchouli and Vanilla.

  • This fragrance boasts such powerful notes, and yet is described as having “natural softness” – I am intrigued by this possibility, as so often such a combination can be overwhelming. And yet, wasn’t that Cleopatra’s goal…? Would love to try this! Thank you for this generous draw. I live in NH, USA.

  • I love jasmine, and all the other notes that are part of Kajal Yasmina sound so rich and opulent. And Cleopatra’s perfumed sails are just the perfect perfume inspiration! Thank you, Nicoleta, for your review, and to the brand for the giveaway!

  • The radiant amber really sparks my interest, I think that it’s an underrated note and it’s absolutely fascinating and mesmerising. It has a sense of mystery and deepness to it and I’m a big fan. I live in Trzebnica, Poland, EU.

  • Kajal Yasmina looks like a complex creation that cannot be put into any category but leathery, whiskey aspects are some of the most dominant. I am in US.

  • Love jasmine fields. Soft and strong at the same time. Cleopatra is an icon ✨️ and a scent queen. Bottle is gorgeous. I’m from eu.

  • I love jasmine when it is used in a dark and bold formulation. This seems to be just that. I love the sound of whiskey and leather playing along in the base as the spices and florals sing in the heart. Best of luck to everyone. I live in NC, USA.

  • Great descriptions; it seems like a very elegantly put together fragrance. Makes perfect sense that they say it’s delicate yet powerful as Kajal is using the more animalic parts of a typically soft note in jasmine. NYC

  • What really intrigued me is the unexpected booziness because of the whiskey and an earthy powdery mood brought on by the iris. This scent sounds absolutely beautiful.

The thing that really interested me in Nicoleta’s review was the booziness in the fragrance. I don’t often see the combination in the more mainstream fragrances, so this was a pleasant surprise and makes me curious about the overall balance of the notes over time.

Moe and his marvellous collection at Kajal always turn my head and capture my attention, Yasmina is no exception, such opulence cannot be ignored and Nicoletas connection with Cleopatra and Mark Anthony is superb, undeniable presence of intoxication is the essence of Yasmina and a smoky, hypnotic sweetness calls my name. Thank you for the opportunity.

  • The combination of the leather and jasmine notes in Yasmina sounds so interesting and lovely! I would love to win a bottle. I’m in MN, USA.

  • Moe s memories of the moments with her grandmother evoking figs and jasmin must be a precious delicacy to revel in. I wonder how other notes play with the composition of those two base notes.

  • ‘Kajal Yasmina is a dark and rich fragrance that announces your presence in the most grand way.’ Sounds exactly like what I want my fragrances to be: bold enough to make a statement!
    Thanks for the giveaway!

  • Thank you for the review, Nicoleta!
I got my nose on this one via a sample recently and instantly fell in love with it. An entire bottle of this masterpiece would certainly be used with adoration from myself! Crossing my fingers.

  • The idea of a heady, animalic jasmine with patchouli and iris and imagining how all these facets play together got all the wheels in my brain turning with excitement! I’m in WA, USA

  • Very interesting inspiration for the Scented Sails name. I never heard the story of Cleopatra perfuming the sails of a boat to lure Mark Anthony. The wafting of fragrance as an aphrodisiac has a universal as well as historical appeal. Yasmina sounds intoxicating with its spiced, boozy, opulent floral bouquet. I love the square bottle, I’m in the US.

  • Boozy jasmine and cleopatra?
Consider me interested. I am not familiar with Warde, but I own Lamar

  • The Cleopatra reference,–and I love that Shakespeare is part of the inspiration for this–caught me and it sounds like this perfume is a wonderful interpretation of everything the scented sails of the queen would’ve been! I live in the USA

  • Whoo jasmin and leather that sounds like good combination! I love kajal dahab and kajal lamar, would love to try this beauty out.

  • I love Jasmine fragrances, and the inclusion of the boozy whiskey has me perplexed, as I can’t remember ever seeing the main note of Jasmine accompanied by booze. It must be tried. I live in Sweden, EU.

  • Very romantic description! “In the first hour, the scent is an extroverted and opulent floral bouquet that blooms, with scarlet rose petals opening to an explosion of dry spices, with saffron and cardamom weaving a commanding aura with hefty projection.”
I can not quite imagine, how the jasmine sounds together with spices and whiskey, but sounds very appealing, especially together with a scene from a Cleopatra movie.
I am from the EU, thank you for the draw!

  • Interesting complexity here that announce a rich perfume. Jasmine with leather and spices, boozy notes and earthy patchouli, smoky gourmand notes…should be perfect for colder weather. The bottle is gorgeous in shape and color, a nice bonus!
    I’m in the EU.

  • This is a TRUE JEVEL, I have never purchased a perfume from this brand, I have only heard about it, from the description it is powerful and wonderful, for me it is an unattainable dream

  • Nice review Nicoleta!. At the end of the summer, the fig tree and the jasmine are full of fruit and blooming, so I understand the image Mr. Khalaf had in mind. Ms. Garnuch-Mentzel approach this rich spicy floral with two sides of spectrum: soft and depth, with boozy, smoky and leathery facets in an effortless and elegant way. Rose, cardamom and the leathery saffron open the way to the animalic jasmine (don´t forget it is a rich fragrance). The boozy whisky and powdery iris play down the scent to end softly with patchouli/tonka to long last in the skin. Autumn is around the corner! I Live in Spain, EU.

  • I liked “the story about Cleopatra’s ship, there, where it was said she perfumed her boat’s sails with jasmine.” There’s nothing like the scent of fresh blooming jasmine flowers! Thanks for the opportunity to sniff. Mich USA

  • Another remarkable review by Nicoleta. This is the part that got me interested in this perfume: “Yasmina is a complex perfume that is hard to place into one category and assign a clear label to. • Fantastic review by Nicoleta here!
I am hugely in love with Kajal Perfumes, being Lamar my favorite one yet. Yasmina is an amazing surprise to me. I love that the opening is very floral like a floral bouquet, and then it surprisingly comes with the boozianess.
I would love to win this one.
    USA here.

  • The way Nicoleta describes the stages in Yasmina’s development sound like separate perfumes, with strong personalities. Maybe it’s no coincidence she finds it didficult to pinpoint a single category for it.
I find myself reading her reviews at a slow pace, trying to actually picture the scent – such an impossible task, in the absence of the fragrance, but it’s such a delightful exercise 🙂
Thank you for the review and the draw, from Europe.

  • Hello!
I’m a fan of big florals! If there’s smth about a rich opulent bouquet in a bottle, I’ll be right there to check it out!)) Just cannot pass on Jasmina as it looks like exactly my cup of tea.
Thanks for a beautiful vivid review of this perfume, Nicoleta!
    Greetings from Switzerland!

  • Khalaf’s memory of picking figs is beauitful and it’s easy to see how it could be inspiration for a bold floral. The leathery, animalic, and boozy elements of the heart are an unexpected addition, though they likely provide a much more interesting progression then just the floral notes would on their own, and a bridge to the ambery drydown. Yasmina sounds like a study in blend and complexity. Great review, Nicoleta.

    I’m in the USA.

  • Michael Prince says:

What sparks my interest based on Nicoleta’s review of Kajal Perfumes Yasmina is first that I love the intricate style, depth, and aromatic/spicy facets that Kajal Perfumes offers in their fragrances. I haven’t tried Yasmina, but Nicoleta makes it sound so good with the bold Jasmine opening along with the spicy, leathery, booziness, and darkness it posesses. It sounds like Moe Khalaf and Valérie Garnuch-Mentzel have came up with a brilliant creation. I am from the USA.

  • Regis Monkton says:

I’d love to try Kajal Yasmina. I love floral fragrances, and I love jasmine in fragrances. Kajal Yasmina seems like an interesting floral fragrance because of the spiciness, the leatheriness, the booziness, and the smoky sweetness. I live in the U.S.A.

  • I already wear Kajal Homme on almost all occasions, 3 bottles i bought in US , and recently my fourth from Ausliebezumduft , one of premier German niche boutiques. It’s one of my staples, and I know I’ll buy 5th too.
I know a few other Kajal fragrances, but not the the brand’s Wardé Collection
It seems to me Yasmina is such high end nighttime fragrance , rose and vanilla fragrance, obviously jasmine and whiskey. The good thing is that the fragrance changes quite a bit, something I nourish
Nicoleta Tomsa is impressed too , always a good sign.
Moe Khalaf jasmine and fig memory of his days as a child added value to the article . As usual Kajal heavy metal caps, and the whole presentation is top notch

  • Yasmina sounds really good very much a refined fragrance, with some classy jasmine, leather and iris , and traditionally for Kajal with nothing that’s artificial – something important .
I tend to believe Yasmina will suit me well .The quantity of the perfume is there , and I can’t stop admiring designer’s work , Kajal hired someone very talented , astonishing work .
I’ve sampled Kajal Homme II and Dahab . Homme II is dressed up fragrance, and Dahab sweet juicy gourmand done really well . Both do smell natural to me. Moe Khalaf had a great early life experiences
Thank you Michelyn , Nicoleta Tomsa , and Kajal

  • When I read about Moe Khalaf speaking of bowls of figs and jasmine I thought “Such a happy adolescent” .
Nicoleta’s take on the Yasmina made me think of making Jasmine Tea Cake drizzled with Whiskey. I imagined eating the cake later on, while walking around the local flower market .
The whole picture, the cake and the aroma of the market is how believe Yasmina will smell.
Love Almaz and Lamar, Dahab is really nice too
Appreciate the review, Moe Khalaf intro , and the giveaway campaign

  • I have the pleasure of knowing Kajal Homme I , II, Dahab and Lamar. Homme I and Homme II are in my possession. I love the two, but higher compliment factor goes to Kajal Homme II , I’m a vain man, and it matters to me.
I find Nicoleta Tomsa experience with Yasmina intriguing, I don’t believe that I’ve smelled boozy white floral fragrance, with spices and leather. Exotic beauty I really like to win.
    Exciting giveaway , USA

Another gem by Kajal , diamonds are indeed forever and ever , like in the song , so Hello Yasmina
Dahab is the only Kajal fragrance I know, it smells like picnic basket full of fruits , juiciness and other surprises. Yasmina in terms of scent profile is unlike Dahab , yet in terms of quality it’s cut from similar elaborate cloth , high end fragrance i can wear on to parties with a few cocktails
Floral, sweet boozy , and leathery fragrance .. here i come.
I believe Yasmina fits me really well , “Lady Boss” fragrance , howdy again Michelyn
I’ll treat myself with Blanton’s Special Reserve Green single barrel, cheers , and thank you for the opportunity

  • Nicoleta did a great job with her review of Yasmina. The fragrance is really complex, and in my opinion hard to describe because of its complexity, and how it changes from the opening to the heart, and in the drydown. I’m very sensitive to jasmine, and thankfully the jasmine in Yasmina is ever slightly carnal, but it never goes into dirty territory.
Can’t say I see the German rigueur, it seems more Caribbean to me.
Not sure what Nicoleta meant by “intimate” , if she meant sexy…sure Yasmina is sexy , but if she meant more close to the skin I can say that the fragrance is extremely strong on my skin.
I know all Kajal fragrances , except for the 2 new Homme’s
    1.Lamar/Almaz
    2.Dahab
    3.Kajal Homme/Yasmina
All profiles I already follow, @waltherp99bg . I also follow @eaudemoe , Moe Khalaf side project , and designer Omar Ayoub , the true genius behind Kajal bottle design

  • Such a playful and maybe even slightly lustful fragrance, I can make a statement wearing Yasmina.
I like the jasmine, smoke , the whiskey
, and the Little Black Dress feel , fun fragrance at its best.
Thank for the introduction with Moe Khalaf ♀️
I know Joorie, because my sister in law wears it regularly, but it’s the only Kajal scent I know. High quality spicy sweet rose ,with honey , I like it a lot.
    Thanks for the draw

  • Thanks for the great writeup Nicoleta! This really looks like a fascinating fragrance.

I find the dark aspect of this fragrance interesting, with the leather and the animalic jasmine and how it plays with the delicate aspects of the florals, spices and then pulls the scent into a big old boozy amber.

Definitely a fun wear for this cooler weather.

    Cheers from WI, USA
