Jorum Studio Trimerous (Euan McCall) 2019 + Silver Dreams of Orris Giveaway

Jorum Studio Trimerous was my first experience of the creative output of Chloe Mullen and perfumer Euan McCall and I was quickly back exploring more. The mysteries of life have made it so I ended up spending more time out in nature or living surrounded by it more than I thought I ever would. I’m a city lover, but many of my of my childhood summers were spent camping and later when older, doing art residencies in various parts of Scandinavia and further afield it was hard to escape. In Lillehammer I could hop a fence and be deep into the woods, surrounded by nature feeling watched by moose and deer. I find many of Jorum Studio perfumes deeply evocative; memories flood back of childhood summers with Healing Berry and Medullary-Ray makes me think of evenings with friends later in life, while Arborist puts me back deep in those Norwegian woods, I spent a year living beside.

Euan McCall works with some unusual materials in his fragrances; the herb cicely and fruit cloudberries are used in the composition of Trimerous, I have seen and smelled cicely in the wild without knowing and have ingested cloudberries along with cream in Norway. It’s these materials that give an edge to the Jorum Studio perfume lines; they give a unique botanical feel to these wonderful perfumes. If you have been following me on Instagram at all you’d know my love of iris in perfumery, Jorum Studio Trimerous is unlike any other iris I know or have smelled, it explores the lesser-known facets of iris like its aromatic side with hoppy aromas while showing off its silvery cool feel. The materials chosen allow the perfume  to shimmer with delicate rich complex tones as if it’s composed with elegant scented veils and musks that dance around a stunning Florentine orris butter.

Vincent van Gogh, Irises, 1890, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York

There’s a Van Gogh painting of irises in The Met’s collection that makes me think of Jorum Studio Trimerous. Painted in 1890 before he checked himself out of the asylum at Saint-Rémy, he painted a series of flowers, two rose and two irises. The one owned by The Met has changed a lot since it was first painted, the pink background he originally sought as a harmonious and softening effect, with the violet flower has faded to an elegant silvery white. The current colour palette of Van Gogh’s painting reminds me of Trimerous and just like the pink paint faded, these new beautiful silvery tones highlight the irises in a similar way as Euan McCall does with his materials in Trimerous.

The opening of Trimerous feels like diving into a fresh cold-water lake, naked, your cool smooth sensual buttery orris skin glides through icy water full of aromatics, letting the botanical greens of juniper, angelica and thyme enrobe you as you return to the surface. A soft chill is in the air as you lay out drying, you can feel the cool orris dry slowly becoming velvety and powdery in texture, almost that concrete like petrichor feel as the water evaporates. Yet it’s your skin that’s turning into this sensual dusty woody aroma, letting herbal greens sparkle with icy sharp pink peppers and dry carrot seed teasing out some pear textures and green hops aromas from the orris, while rich nectarines drip with a tart sweetness as a counter to the verdancy.

Silvery slivers of birch flicker with these translucent aromatic greens and herbal blues, bringing a suede like darkness to the velvety orris. It’s joined by a swirl of complex delicious fruity florals, lurking like animals in the forest under the aromatics and silver woods. A soft haze of wild berries and dry cacao blur beautifully with what feels like a blue lotus flower tinted green, giving that waxy dry sensation while still feeling watery and cool. Gentle chalky orris facets get sensual, as they grow fuller with leathery undertones. The use of materials in Jorum Studio Trimerous is rather brilliant, as they tease out these more unique facets of the Florentine orris butter, pushing it into a direction you don’t usually experience.

A soft darkness of oud like whispers of leathers rubbed with herbs, letting out a gentle smooth animalic purr. Jorum Studio Trimerous is darkened and enriched by this soft suede fur and wears like a dark orris incense plume wrapping around you. It adds a subtle vintage feel feeling opulent as more of the rich dark resinous woods bring out new depths. Trimerous is more contemporary in feel, taking its rich opulent smoky fur feel from older perfumes, while letting you bath in nature and orris’ finery. Jorum Studio lines capture nature so well with those unique materials from the wilds of Scotland and beyond, giving you and experience like no other.

Notes: Carrot Seed, Bergamot, Nectarine, Thyme, Cicely, Pink Pepper, Juniper, Cloudberry, Angelica Root. Orris Butter, Kombucha, Centaury, Suede, Musk*, Ambergris, Styrax, Vanilla, Incense. *of synthetic origin.

Disclaimer: Review is of my own bottle of Jorum Studio Trimerous. My opinions are my own. P.S. I like it so much I have a backup.

  • Ooooh, this sounds like a lovely take on iris. I’m intrigued by the Norwegian herbs and fruits in this composition as I don’t believe I have ever experienced them before. (Cloudberries sound so fun and dreamy!) As a lover of the suede-like side of iris, I’m quite happy to see that aspect of the material being embraced and highlighted in this fragrance. I would love to give this one a shot. Best of luck to all. I live in NC, USA.

  • I’ve never experienced a scent with the note carrot seed, but it makes me infinitely curious to do so.

  • Based on all the great reviews here I bought samples of the Scottish Collection from Indigo Perfunery. Healing Berry and Firewater are my favorites.
I would love to win Trimulous since Wearescentient says it smells like a Van Gogh painting.

Hello from Florida, and thank you to J for the review!

Trimerous sounds like a dream. I love the idea of a “silvery” scent, and orris, pink pepper, cloudberry, and angelica sound like the perfect notes to make that happen. I’ve also never smelled cicely or centaury, so I’d love to see how they fit into McCall’s vision here!

  • Jorum Studio Trimerous looks like something that will appeal to iris lovers. It is unlike any other iris composition and it has a cold feel as well as a subtle vintage vibes. I am in US

  • I am obsessed with Jorum lately! I tried some of their fragrances at a boutique florist in Chicago, I went home with a bottle of quirky, sunny Gorseland but now that summer has finally turned into fall, I can’t stop thinking about Carduus. I agree with J’s sentiment that Jorum fragrances tend to be deeply evocative, with unexpected textures and emotions shining through thanks to clever uses of interesting materials. I would absolutely love to get my nose on Trimerous and see if I agree about the colors in the Van Gogh. Orris can sometimes be too much for me but other times its’s heartachingly beautiful, I’d like to experience this one and see where it takes me. In the meantime I might pull go buy Carduus so I can stop pining and start spritzing. I am in the US, thank you for the draw and for highlighting this splendid perfume house.

  • I’ve been curious about Jorum Studio and am awaiting a sample of Spiritcask that I ordered a few days ago, The description of Trimerous in the last two paragraphs makes me think I need to order a sample of this. Describing this as leathers rubbed with herbs sounds wonderful.

  • Hello from Indianapolis!

What a visual experience that review left!!
“The opening of Trimerous feels like diving into a fresh cold-water lake, naked, your cool smooth sensual buttery orris skin glides through icy water…” THAT, that right there had me sold! This sounds amazing!
I’ve never had the pleasure of trying anything from Jordin Studio, but now I’m completely intrigued. Thank you for a great review!

  • What sparks my interest about J WeareScentient’s review is how Euan McCall the perfumer works with some unusual ingredients in his fragrances like fruit cloudberries and the herb cicely. These two were incorporated in his fragrance Trimerous. Until now, I have never heard of these two ingredients and they sound intriguing especially how they give a unique botanical feel. I have never tried any Jorum Studio perfume. Thank you for the opportunity. From New York, USA.

  • My interest was sparked when I read that there was a note called Kombucha involved. I have not tried anything from the house. US

  • I love the fact that Euan McCall works with some unusual materials . That sounds like art. I live in Washington State.

  • KrystalNicole says:

I have never heard of this perfumer or tried anything from Jorum Studio. Orris and iris are my favorite notes aside from more ambery and gourmand type notes.

WeareScentient’s review has already had me seek out a small sample of this perfume as it sounds like something im going to really enjoy. Some of the mentioned that sparked my interest are when it was described as dark orris incense plume wrapping around you and Trimerous is more contemporary in feel, taking its rich opulent smoky fur feel from older perfumes, while letting you bath in nature and orris’ finery. The smoky fur feel from older perfumes is something I adore and the listed notes also sounds right up my alley, I am so excited to try this fragrance!

Thank you to Indigo Perfumery and Cafleurebon for this generous draw.

  • I’m so intrigued by the combination of blue and green aromatics and would love to add this to my collection, and it would be my first time trying anything from Jorum Studios.

I looooove Iris fragrances!! So excited to see this review up as I’ve sampled a few Jorum Studio perfumes, and, as previously stated, LOVE IRIS. I’m excited to see how this house approaches Iris in Trimerous. I live in VA, USA.

  • I love Wearescentient’s description of all the facets of this perfume: silvery, aromatic, velvety, and opulent! The balance of a contemporary-feeling fragrance with vintage richness is also compelling, as is the botanical inspiration behind the perfume’s name and unique set of notes.

I haven’t tried Jorum’s scents before, and now look forward to doing so!

  • I love iris fragrances, and the silvery cool aspects paired with smooth buttery notes or orris sound like something I’d love to try, plus the statement that this is unlike any other iris scent makes me DEFINITELY want to try it! I’ve tried Jorums Firewater (too smoky for me) and Rose Highland (a gorgeous gorsey rose scent that I love).

  • This sounds like such a unique take on orris! Which isn’t surprising because everything from Jorum is so creative. Thyme and carrot seed and kombucha – I am so curious! This is one of the few from Jorum I haven’t tried – my favorites are Rose Highland Rose and Carduus. Thank for the opportunity to win this one! I’m in MN, USA.

  • Very intrigued by “the lesser-known facets of iris like its aromatic side with hoppy aromas while showing off its silvery cool feel” that J WeareScentient describes. I have yet to try any from Jorum Studio, and would love to try this beautifully described scent! I live in WA, USA

  • An iris centric perfume with unusual supporting notes? Sign me up! I love iris in all its facets; earthy, powdery, woody. Trimerous sounds interesting in its cool, green, orris opening turning into a powdery petrichor. The berry and woods in combination with ambergris and musk seems to give it an opulent fall feel. Euan McCall knows seems like a very talented composer. As an iris lover, I would love to try Trimerous. I’m in the US.

  • I’ve really enjoyed J’s recent contributions to CaFleureBon; their memory-filled introduction to Jorum Studio Trimerous is a great example of the personal experience they incorporate into each review. I’m curious how this more aromatic take on iris smells, with the addition of cicely, juniper, angelica and thyme, and the tart-sweet nectarine notes J mentioned. Also, the tinted-suede oud base sounds wonderful. I haven’t tried a Jorum Studio perfume yet, but Trimerous and Pony Boy are at the top of my list, and I’m interested in the whole Scottish Odyssey.

I’m in the USA. Thanks for the giveaway!

  • Great review by Wearescentient.
Jorum Studio caught me totally off guard. Trimerous is one fragrance that dares to use components that are not usually used in perfumery and that is something I love. I also love that it explores facets of the iris that are not usual in perfumery.
I would love to try this daring, complex yet delicious fragrance soon.

For a while now, I’ve been very interested in trying something from Jorum Studio, but I haven’t had a chance to do so yet. I’m very interested to experience the unusual notes which Euan is using, e.g. cicely, cloudberry, centaury. According to the review, orris seems to be one of the main aspects of this fragrance, and I appreciate when J Wearescentient mentions “The use of materials in Jorum Studio Trimerous is rather brilliant, as they tease out these more unique facets of the Florentine orris butter, pushing it into a direction you don’t usually experience.” I live in MD, U.S.A.

  • Michael Prince says:

What sparks my interest based on J WeareScentients review on Jorum Studio Trimerous is the contemporary and modern takes on this Iris/Orris based fragrance make it sound truly intriguing. I’ve never tried anything from Jorum Studio, but I’ve heard great things. I’m from the USA.

  • Ooh everything about this scent sounds exciting – starting with the name! Trimerous – I love the concept behind this perfume, focusing on three overlooked elements of orris. And the scent notes – around the orris, adding rare things like cloudberry, cicely, kombucha, and timeless notes like oud and musk! I would love to try this unique perfume!

    Best wishes from the US!

  • I am curious about the forest aspect of this fragrance as we leave summer behind. I always love the famous artwork that is in the articles on Cafleurebon. Nice to know it doesn’t go too vintage. I have never tried anything from this brand. Thanks for the chance. USA.

Thank you for the fantastic review J Wearescentient.

This scent makes me think of irises growing in a path in a forest in the cold.

The notes are absolutely beautiful and I’ve always wanted to give this house a try.
