Jeroboam Insulo Review (Vanina Muracciole) 2015 + 24 Karat Magic Giveaway

Jeroboam Insulo review

Jeroboam Insulo © Karl

“Pop, Pop, Pop, it’s showtime!” announced the diminutive jet-black flacon, I wondered what surprise awaited me, well I considered that there’s no time like the present – and with that I joyfully spritzed the mysterious perfume from the gold atomizer… suddenly that 24-karat magic hit the air. Head turner, conversation starter and rouser; the little onyx bottle has made its presence felt.

Tonight
I just want to take you higher
Throw your hands up in the sky
Let’s set this party off right

Since its inception in 2015, Jeroboam has represented a universal vision and brought a distinct flavour to proceedings.  Experimenting and breaking conventions in the world of perfumery is what separates Jeroboam from the crowd.  Asked by founder Francois Henin to utilise musk in each fragrance, perfumer Vanina Muracciole has amplified Jeroboam scents with a hearty dose of it to give a volume and breadth to interact with both the air and the skin.  Flipping the focus to the base of the scent and saturating oneself in a whirl of musk breaks down the structure of tradition and welcomes in a new playground of olfactory creativity.  The effect is exaggerated when combining raw materials with finesse.

In creating Jeroboam Insulo meaning (Island) in Esperanto, Vanina Muracciole created fragrance magic by using two of the most common ingredients in perfumery musk and vanilla to maximum effect. It brings that showtime presence of “Lights, camera, action” and a vivacity of an aphrodisiac based on a central component certain to court attention. It is an invitation to dive in deep and experience a fragrance that is a supple vehicle of bitter and sweet tones. Insulo has a lip-smacking addictive quality to it, the vanilla is deep and resinous.  Gilded in its luxurious tonality also its opulence.

There’s something about a scent which creates an excitement around you.  It’s a double-edged sword.  People want to know what you are wearing; they want to get close and discover more.  Look out, because here you will garner the attention of many.  Just make sure you have a witty retort at the ready should the need arise.  This is a scent of that player-game scenario full of fun and has a bewitching quality to it.

Vanilla and musk draw you in immediately, which remain the backbone.  Jeroboam Insulo possesses a rhythmic quality full of strength and heft fluctuating between golden, earthy and treacle colours on each smell.  You are taken to pleasurable close ups of each element.  Dig deeper and you will uncover spicy undertones and a wealth of subtlety such as bonfire toffee mixed with liquorice. This sweetness in Insulo is amplified with a nuance which I can compare to a classic Crème brûlée; the rich custard base contrasted with layered caramelised sugar.  It lingers throughout and blends smoothly with the boozy and nutty aspects making this multifaceted and deeply alluring.

The depth of Jeroboam Insulo is offset by a subtle use of jasmine in the heart which adds a floral and slightly animalic touch.  Juxtaposing the strength and fragility of the scent – a powerful first impression belying a delicate heart.  Musk creates a warmth to bring everything together also extending its longevity.  Insulo is above all sensual and Vanina Muracciole has taken the brief of producing a seductive scent and blended a perfume that is a real powerhouse of this genre.  24 Karat Magic indeed.

  • I am in the US, I have not heard of Jeroboam, and I am interested in this mix of musk and vanilla.

  • It’s fabulous notes and uniqueness strikes me. I’m aware of Jeroboam. I live in Poland, EU.

  • Anca Tse says:

Not aware of Jeroboam, however now I want to know more. Vanilla and musk together- classic combo yet a game-changer? I’m intrigued.

    I live in Portugal

  • Now that I think about it, I have not smelled many fragrances where the dominant players are vanilla and musk even though these two are some of the most used notes in perfumery. From the review it seems that musk adds the animalic touch to the composition that also has floral elements. I have been aware of the brand since its beginning, especially I was already familiar with Jovoy. I am in US.

  • LOVE This review. Love the intro… Bruno Mars 24k is a fantastic song. I know Jerobaoam from Nicoleta and Emmanuelle. I bought Boho. I need to read your review of Ambra.
Vanilla and musk are really used all the time so that Insulo smells different and opulent really appeals to me. I like the esperanto reference too.

  • I have been aware of Jeroboam brand because of coverage by Cafleurebon and having read some reviews of their perfumes here. From Karl’s review of Jeroboam Insulo, I am curious about the musk and vanilla notes in Jeroboam Insulo. Only three notes are listed and it seems musk along with the indolic qualities of jasmine will make it animalic whereas vanilla will temper it down by adding some sweetness to it. Would love to try it based on the reviews I have read on Cafleurebon. Thanks for the review and draw. From USA.

  • I always find it interesting that Jasmin can be animalic. Seems so counter intuitive but the more I experience fragrances the more I see it to be true. In maryland.

  • I’m always on the search for great vanilla fragrances, and adding an almost smoky scent to the vanilla sounds very intriguing. I live in Oklahoma, United States. I have seen Jeroboam for sale at several boutiques, but I have never put my nose to any of them, unfortunately. Thank you Jeroboam for the generous giveaway and good luck to everyone!

  • Maryjean says:

Thank you for your introduction to Jeroboam. Love the notes Vanilla and Musk. Thank you for this Chance USA

  • Jeroboam has been on my radar for a while but I haven’t tried any fragrances yet. Insulo’s description piqued my curiosity. Lately I’ve been craving deep, opulent fragrances. It seems Inulo fits this category. Thank you for bringing it to my attention! ~Indiana, USA

  • I like that insulo is a seductive scent. Haven’t tried a Jeroboam fragrance yet. Looking forward to it. Thanks, ca

  • If you’re a fragrance enthusiast you know Jovoy , but Jeroboam I think not many people know about , me included. I can easily chatter about Jovoy perfumes , but I have no experience with Jeroboam.
Insulo is intriguing to me , because it’s sexy and playful , slightly carnal vanilla. The lustful drydown is what I’m actually looking for.
    Thanks for the draw

I do like a good vanilla musk and this sounds like one of the finest. I live in Seattle, Washington, so cozy scents tend to be very calming amidst all this rain. I have never heard of Jeroboam before this article, but now I’m intrigued!

  • It is always great seeing new sweet fragrances, as I am a gourmand lover myself and reading this one smells like a creme brule, makes my heart happy. Musk and vanilla are two notes I adore in perfumery, so this fragrance is surely a win for me.
I have tried Jeroboam Vespero before and it is something amazing.

Definitely know of this brand. Vanilla and seductive musk is a sensual box blend and I would love to get my hands on this fragrance Michigan USA

I am well aware of Jeroboam, and tried some of their latest perfumes such as Gozo and Vespero.
This seems a very simple fragrance, but the review has sparkled my interest…really curious to try it on skin

  • Whats struck me most about Insulo from Karl’s review was how many different makers are shown in the scent with just the 3 listed notes. I love vanilla and musc jasmine is not something I dislike either so Insulo sounds really nice. I have heard of Jereboam here before many times. From the U.S. thanks for the generous draw.

  • Mirea Luca says:

Beautfiul review of what seems to be a simple, but so amazing fragrance. I was not aware of Jeroboam, but i love the idee of musk and vanilla heavy, with jasmine giving a floral touch. I live in Romania, EU.

This is what won me over: “This is a scent of that player-game scenario full of fun and has a bewitching quality to it.” Though I’m aware of the house, I haven’t tried any of their creations yet.

This write-up is awesome! Before reading this, I left a comment on the IG page that Jeroboam bottles seem so “sexy yet mysterious” … then Karls write up, highlighting the fun, sultriness, and allure of this scent told me the juice matches the bottles. This elixir, Insulo, is jumping with vanilla and musk – right up my olfactory alley! I have seen the Jeroboam bottles on IG and learned of the brand two years ago on Youtube. Winning Insulo would be much appreciated. Helping get me out of my pandemic-slump and would be a top-top B-Day treat #TarusSeason Right now, I am in Chicago, USA.

  • Great review Karl, as always! Lovely bit of reading! I love Jeroboam, their Origino is one of my favourite fragrances. I haven’t tried this one sadly, but it seems like it’s a gorgeous vanilla centered beauty! I live in Croatia, EU.

  • Yum! I have never heard of bonfire toffee but now I am very intrigued. I have read a few Jaroboam reviews on this site, but haven’t tried any fragrances yet. Thank you for the review, writing from the EU.

Sweet, simple and welcoming. Vanilla is the best especially combined with something like Rose and/or Jasmine. Thank you for the opportunity! From Romania, EU.

  • Niinocka says:

I have been aware of Jeroboam since the house has been already featured on CaFleurBon. However, I haven’t become acquainted with their fragrances yet. After reading Karl’s introduction to the house, I have become even more interested to try their creations – especially reading that the house is experimental and breaks conventions.

Vanilla has been one of my favorite scents, but since its omnipresence, I have become quite selective and, I have to admit, bit snobbish when it comes to really loving vanilla-centric perfumes. I am not afraid that vanilla in Jeroboam Insulo would underwhelm me. This vanilla seems to be strong, but sensual, and highly seductive with many underlying facets. I am especially curious how vanilla mingles with musk and jasmine.

Thank you for a great review and giveaway.
    I reside in the EU.

  • With a name like “Insulo” I would have imagined lots of tropical florals or some salty notes, but it’s interesting to see only 3 very common notes in this perfume. Nowadays people like to put an abundance of notes and/or create some fantasy notes to seem fancy. Here we read “only” vanilla, jasmine and musk, but oh the description is so enticing. When I read “bonfire toffee mixed with liquorice”, I knew I had to try this one… Even though I have often seen Jeroboam perfumes around, I had no idea Jovoy’s François Henin was its founder ! It definitively makes me want to try the brand. I live in France.

  • I’m struck by three notes listed them being vanilla, jasmine and musk yet the review says you might detect bonfire toffee mixed with licorice. US

  • ScentedKnits says:

Jeroboam has been on my list to try, with Insulo at the top of that list. Any fragrance that requires me to have a witty retort at the ready is right up my alley! I live in the US.

  • Uncle1979 says:

I’ve sampled Jeroboam black bottles fragrances , and to me Insulo is undoubtedly the best one. Top quality vanilla fragrance , and as a
Classically trained in Paris Pastry Chef, I know vanilla.

“This sweetness in Insulo is amplified with a nuance which I can compare to a classic Crème brûlée; the rich custard base contrasted with layered caramelised sugar”

Hmmm , now I’m proud to be a student of the great Pierre Hermé, top 3 Pastry Chef, and Chocolatier in the world. I’ll never be on his level of course, but I have to say in culinary world there is no consensus for what “a classic Crème Brûlée” is , the origin , and how the “original” should be made, is a subject of debates for hundreds of years. Even more conservative culinary institutions, and schools in France are not on same page.
The 3 countries claiming its origin are Spain – Crema Catalana , UK – Trinity Cream and of course France with Crème Brûlée.
    The debates are for
    -Best ratio
    -Temper egg yolks
    -Should you strain it?
    -Shallow ramekins
    -Water bath
    -Best bake time
-Temperature of serving , all cold , half-cold and half-hot , or all hot
    -The vanilla flavoring
-Should you garnish it , or not …..
    And so on….

I can see the toffee, caramelized sugar and boozy nuances in Insulo , well done My nose do not recognize licorice, but something smoky, and tobacco.
To me Insulo smells like Pecan Caramel Rum Cake and some tobacco.
I highly appreciate the review, especially the culinary part , and the giveaway campaign.

  • Beautiful creation and indeed ot is 24 K gold warm love inside a bottle!
    Love @Jeroboam as a brand!✨️

  • Thanks for sharing this one with us. I`d like to see indolic touches with vanilla and I think animalic touch of jasmine makes the perfume sexier. Thanks for the draw and I live in the US.

  • I do enjoy Jeroboam fragrances. One of my favs is Oriento. I like the sound of a nutty and boozy scent. And the thought of a Crème brûlée makes it sound delicious. Thanks for another awesome review and draw. Mich USA

  • Jeroboam Insulo sounds like it will be an instant classic. To take on vanilla and musk in a new way is certainly a challenge. I am aware of Jeroboam and I live in the US

  • wandering_nose says:

I am obsessed with the Jeroboam bottles! Gozo was the first one I heard about when Sebastian was interviewing Francois Henin and I got enchanted by others in the line too (especially Ambra, Oriento and Vespero). Insulo’s onyx bottle is pure magic to me. The musk giving the fragrance volume and breadth and interacting with both the air and the skin sounds amazing. I love vanilla and jasmine too, and love my vanilla deep and resinous and when I hear that a fragrance has a bewitching quality about it, I can imagine myself wearing Insulo with utmost pleasure and happiness. • joetelegram says:

Thank you Karl for the introduction to Jeroboam. I think that it is interesting that musk is used in every offering. I appreciate that consistency and variation! I also appreciate the universality of the Esperanto reference. Though it is a select club, it is open to all. I really love the way you describe Jeroboam Insulo as possessing “a rhythmic quality full of strength and heft fluctuating between golden, earthy and treacle colours” as well as “a classic Crème brûlée; the rich custard base contrasted with layered caramelised sugar.” How delectable! I really can’t wait to experience the house of Jeroboam!

P.s. Now I can’t get that song out of my head…Ha!

  • A sensual, vanilla and musk centric fragrance with subtle notes of toffee, licorice and jasmine unfurling as the olfactive experience progresses sounds just lovely. And how beautiful is the bottle?!
I have heard and read about Jeroboam perfumes, but never smelled one.
    I am in the EU.

  • Laurentiu says:

Vanilla and musk seems to be a very enjoyable mix. Not a big fan of jasmine as a man as this can be perceived a little bit feminine, but I would accept such a challenge every now and then. Nevertheless, I am curious about it as I have never tried anything from this house and I am curious about it.

  • Jeroboam has been on my lost to try for a while. I love musk and vanilla so, so this sounds like Magic, 24 Carat that is lol. I live in Indiana USA

  • I love the notes vanilla and musk so I would love to try Insulo. I am aware of Jeroboam. Based in the UK.

  • mistabooker says:

I don’t have a Jeroboam fragrance yet this should great would love to get my hands on this one.

  • GennyLeigh says:

Vanilla and musk are two solid notes to build upon for a sensual, opulent fragrance. The quality of the ingredients amps uo the spicy, liquorice, crème brûlée facets. Jasmine seems like a natural animalistic counterpoint to the vanilla and musk. Additional points for the use of Esperanto for the Insulo name. I have heard of Jeroboam but have never tried anything from the house. MD, USA.

  • hshinkoda says:

Until few years ago when I saw musk note in perfumes It always turn me off. Learning everyday about fragrances and notes I came to appreciate musk… And Insuli sounds really amazing!!! A attention getter, beautiful projection and long lasting power!!!! I would love to try it!!!! I’m from Massachusetts, US.

  • I love that there are nuances that contrast and build upon the core musk and vanilla notes. It sounds so interesting! First time hearing about this house and I’m excited! I’m in the US and would love to try out this scent through the drawing!

  • Theenzofdaworld says:

Really captured my interest with the description of Bonfire Toffee – Hope I get chosen! I live in the US – was not aware of Jeroboam, but it’s certainly on my radar now!

  • IvanVelikov says:

The parent company I know, Psychedelique is beyond gorgeous, one of the best patchouli scents ever made , but Jeroboam is new to me. Musky fragrance with lots of vanilla , earthiness I would love to experience. What actually striked me is the Crème brûlée comparison Karl made , and the burnt sugar too
I’ll gladly wear Insulo on all occasions , its versatile and quite attractive.
Thank you Karl Topham , Jovoy Paris and Jeroboam

I totally agree that musk and vanilla have a magnetic attraction. They are familiar and full of positive meanings.
I haven’t heard about Jeroboam until now.

Francois Henin is doing everything right, from A to Z , Jovoy is the best boutique worldwide, Jovoy fragrances are awesome, and Jeroboam project is different , and successful. Insulo stands out to me.
Karl review was ultra-fine , I can’t say I smell liquorice , or anything bitter , but fragrances smell differently on different people.
    “classic Crème brûlée”
Haven’t eaten crème brûlée in at least 5-6 years .
I was also expecting to read about the tobacco in Insulo , kind of surprising, since in my opinion It’s unmistakably there .
    Thank you for the opportunity

  • I’m not familiar with this line but I love their packaging. I’m a big vanilla fan even though I feel like that’s not cool to admit. The Bruno Mars lyrics are a fun touch in the review! USA

  • What strikes me about the fragrance is the bonfire toffee accord. That one is new to me. I live in Georgia USA. This is my first time hearing about Jeroboam. Thanks for the giveaway.

  • I have heard of this company and I’d like to sample their collected works. I can enjoy the use of vanilla and musk in fragrances and I’d like to see how Vanina M. uses them. According to Karl, this fragrance is seductive and I’m under the impression that it has good overall performance. I live in the U.S.A.

  • Yes, this perfume is very addictive perfume.
Insulo is one of biggest star in Jeroboam beautiful collection! my favourite. Love vanilla in this perfume.

  • Thanks for this review Karl!

Every time I read about Jeroboam found am remembered I need to pick up Esperanto again and master this global language!

The older I get, the more I seem to enjoy Vanilla fragrances, When you mention a bonfire toffee mixed with liquorice. You really pique my interest. I am a bit of a sweet tooth and liquorice happens to be my favourite.

This really sounds like an intimidating, strong sensual fragrance. Perhaps not something I would wear in the warm weather, but as the sun sets, and the temerature lowers, I would enjoy smelling this 24 Karat Magic in the air!

I bought a bottle of Gozo after Michelyn’s glaring review and am quite intriqued by your review of Insulo. I hope to try it soon!!

    Greetings from the UK.

  • Jeroboam Insulo seems to be a sensual fragrance with a level of duality between its powerful opening and its delicate heart. Seems to be a fragrance that will attract wanted attention because of its sweetness, spiciness, floral notes with some animalic touches.
I have not tried any Jeroboam fragrances yet.

Thanks for the great review Karly.

This fragrance sounds like an introverted, brooding brother of Caron Pour Un Homme, except that the lavender has been replaced by a jasmine note that is both floral and animalic.

I really would love to spray the two side by side and see how they compare.

I’ve heard of this house through CFB.

I loved Karl’s review Jeroboam Insulo. I’ve heard great things about this brand as being a sister company to Jovoy Paris. This sounds like a warm, sweet, spicy, vanillic, and ambery fragrance. This has the scent profile I love and I enjoyed learning about the brand Jeroboam, the creative director, the perfumer, and this beautiful fragrance Insulo. I am from the USA.

  • I have not yet had the pleasure of experiencing Jeroboam, although I am interested in a few of their fragrances. Insulo has been on my radar for a while. I love musk, vanilla, and jasmine so I have no doubt I would enjoy Insulo. Now, I am especially intrigued by it as Karl described it as having “bonfire toffee mixed with liquorice” and “creme brulee” qualities. I would love to win a bottle of Jeroboam Insulo. Thank you, Karl, for the great review, and thank you to Jeroboam for the giveaway. I am located in the USA.

I’ve smelled Insulo before, and you couldn’t have described it better with “golden” and “treacly”! It has a rich, boozy depth to it, and even a nutty nuance that I pick up. Great review!

I live in the UK, and would love to be able to win this. I’m aware of Jeroboam – I’ve tried the brand’s offerings at Jovoy, and greatly enjoy them 🙂

I’m not familiar with Jeroboam, but I must say the first thing that struck me about Jeroboam Insulo was the gorgeous bottle. Before even opening this post I knew this fragrance would be one I needed in my collection. A classic combination of vanilla and musk, I’m interested in the dessert-like smoothness with the compliment of an animalic jasmine note. Thank you for the review!

Insulo checks all the boxes, i need to sample Jeroboam asap !
La Liturgie des Heures , Psychedelique , Les Jeux sont Faits Jovoy and Private Label are the Jovoy fragrances i know . Les Jeux sont Faits i found to be the best smelling one of the four , $180 is what i paid for 100ml bottle from Luckyscent.
Jeroboam sibling i have no experience with , other than seeing a few videos on Youtube , and the reviews on Cafleurebon. I do have plans for a trip to Paris, and visiting Jovoy boutique would be one of my top priorities.
Insulo i think is flirtatious , grown up sexy vanilla in a special bottle. Deep and rich fragrances are my go-to.
I like the name “Insulo ” , Island . Esperanto is artificially created language in 19th century, all i can remember about it from my high school days .

I’m familiar with all Jeroboam fragrances, excluding Floro . If I have to rate my favorite ones:
    1. Insulo
    2. Oriento
    3. Ambra / Miksado
My impressions of Insulo are similar , compared to what Karl is getting , but not exactly the same.
I can’t say I smell bitter or earthy nuances , or licorice , but Insulo is definitely rich and addictive . I can see the crème brûlée , the toffee , and burned sugar comparison, and the booziness, but also other goodies
I’m almost 100% certain there are at least 3-4 other notes in Insulo, other than vanilla, jasmine and musk , if not more. I clearly perceive cherry pipe tobacco, hefty dose to be precise, but also
saffron , leather and something slightly smoky , pinch of incense maybe?
Insulo is not a linear fragrance, at least to me, and well deserved its status in the fragrance community.
I buy , and wear fragrances for my own pleasure only, I’m not looking for a round of applause, but I fully agree with Karl about Insulo being big time attention grabber.
All profiles I already follow , and I also follow @jovoyuae since I’ve visited the place, @waltherp99bg

    …….

Small off-topic if I may , since I had the exact same conversation today, Karl’s “liquorice” = preferred spelling of licorice in UK and Ireland , in case someone from US thinks there’s a typo

  • sephrenia300 says:

Fantastic review Karl! What strikes me about Jeroboam Insulo is the idea that a fragrance based on two of the softest, warmest, and most comforting ingredients, musk and vanilla, can be used to create a fragrance that is so flashy and exuberant that brings to mind the “Lights, camera, action” energy and excitement. That is definitely a fragrance that sounds enticing to me.

I am aware of Jeroboam but only because of a previous article I read on cafleurebon about Ambra and Miksado. I have unfortunately not yet tried any of them. I live in the US.
