Jeroboam Ambra Review (Vanina Muracciole) + Smooth Operator Draw

Jeroboam Ambra review

Jeroboam Ambra by Karl©

“He’s loved in seven languages

Diamond nights and ruby lights high in the sky…

A license to love, insurance to hold

Melts all your memories and change to gold.”

Lyrics from Smooth Operator sung by Sade Adu from the 1984 album Diamond Life

Jeroboam is an intriguing brand. The name is a juxtaposition to the presentation. Tongue in cheek. A subtle nod to luxury and a reference to scent as larger than the minute sleek onyx and gold flacons which, house these powerful extrait de parfums. The modus operandi of Francois Henin, founder of Jeroboam, was to create the most potent and sensual fragrances available. Perfume in his view is, “A weapon for those who know how to use it.”

Each fragrance in the collection is named after a word in Esperanto, a language invented in the 19th century. This communication was built with the intent of creating a universal dialogue for all. The central ingredient to each perfume in the collection is the ‘muscs enigmatiques’ accord, a cocktail of musks. Carnal and animalic, thus the ‘modus operandi’ is clear – perfume as a language of seduction, a license to love.

Francois Henin of Jovoy

As with the whole collection, Monsieur Henin enlisted the talented perfumer Vanina Muracciole to create Jeroboam Ambra. Known for developing exciting twists to her perfumes, Madame Muracciole uses this ability to significant effect here. Ambra announces itself with a sparkling and dynamic opening of bergamot, which, combined with geranium gives a cool and crystalline character. This introduction is bolstered with a slightly smoky incense and the impression is one of a bright starry night set against a midnight sky. It is an unexpected opening, to an ‘amber’ scent and one that sets the butterflies whirling in the stomach as a prelude of what is to come. Cold nights contrast hot blood and heated emotions…

The transition of Jeroboam Ambra is seductively smooth. Minty aspects of geranium melt wonderfully into the earthiness of patchouli. Wisps of hot dark chocolate from the introduction of Peru Balsam combine beautifully into the lingering fresh and herbaceous touch that still pervades the air. To treat powerful ingredients like these with such delicate diligence is no mean feat and the impact is an intoxicating blend that delights. Surreptitiously, the scent maneuvers and it becomes more buttery, creamy, and lighter. By this time, the iridescent and ebullient aspects of Ambra have departed and swaths of Jeroboam’s signature musks begin to cocoon you. The outward appearance of cool aloofness suddenly betrayed by a warm heart.

Jeroboam Ambra transforms into a creamy blend of tonka bean and vanilla, that said, the use of Haitian vetiver subtly prolongs the earthy facets throughout the lifecycle of the scent. We are left with an extremely alluring perfume that in tandem with the skin is quite flirtatious and seductive – melting one’s memories of the fresh opening and embracing gold, lustrous tones. As a result, Ambra goes against the grain of typical amber scents. However, the culmination is still one that is deeply rich and addictive. It is testament to Vanina Muracciole’s talent that she has created a perfume that can both surprise and enrapture in equal measure. It is a scent that takes you by surprise and by the end one is transfixed in the luxurious and tempting nature of it. Jeroboam Ambra truly is a ‘Smooth Operator’ – an original and stirring take on the fantasy accord we think we know so well.

Notes: Bergamot, incense, geranium, patchouli, Peru Balsam, musk, tonka-bean, vetiver, and vanilla.

  • The amazing notes of the fragrance spark my interest, I live in Poland, EU. I haven’t tried Jeroboam before.

  • I have never tried any Jeroboam fragrance before but Karl’s description of Ambra makes it very appealing and I hope I win so I can get to experience this awesome sounding fragrance from Jeroboam. Greetings from Maryland, US.

  • I’m a huge fan of Sade and Jeroboam. The geranium and smoky incense notes in Ambra spark my interest. On my wishlist it goes! Thanks for another awesome article and draw. Mich USA

  • Unfortunately I’ve never tried any fragrance branded by Jeroboam. I can’t recall seeing the brand at any of the stores I frequent here in the Houston area. The opening notes of bright bergamot and minty geranium, layered upon the earthiness of patchouli and vetiver, all wrapped up on a foundation of sweet tonka-bean and vanilla, sounds luscious for a cold winter’s night.

  • This sounds like something I need during this very cold New England winter; the creamy but light quality is very appealing. I have not yet tried Jeroboam but in the last couple of weeks I have been researching them a bit and would love to try this. I live in the US.

  • Herbaceous AND warm really sounds like my cup of tea. Sounds like a unique amber perfume, a genre not always known for its creativity. Jeroboam is a new line for me. I am from USA

  • Jeroboam Ambra notes are amazing. Karl’s description sounds wonderful. I’m a big fan of Sade. Never tried any Fragrance by Jeroboam, Ambra is definitely on my wishlist. Thank you for this Chance. USA

  • I’ve not tried anything from Jeroboam yet, but have read numerous reviews here and they always sound interesting, Ambra is no exception. I like how Karl explained that the perfumes center around this “muscs enigmatiques” accord and that this is a unique amber fragrance. It certainly sounds unique and full of contrasts. I like the idea of the opening being a starry night sky due to the incense with the bergamot and geranium. Those musks Karl mentioned mixing with the Peru Balsam, tonka, and vanilla sounds like it would be a very comforting dry down, and great for the cold winter nights, but perhaps it will even work in slightly warmer weather due to the fresh and earthy nuances. Thanks for the generous draw, from CT USA.

Really enjoyed the content of this review. Karl did an excellent job taking the reader through the scent journey of Ambra with vivid description and juxtaposing the motif of the fragrance alongside the Queen of smooth jazz, Ms. Sade Adu. I have been a fan of hers since an early age and can attest that listening to her is akin to that minty fresh opening with a smooth, buttery body, followed by the warm envelopment of the finishing notes. Appreciate the generosity of this giveaway. Many blessings from Virginia, USA!

  • BostonScentGuy says:

I loved Karl talking about how the perfumer treats “powerful ingredients with delicate diligence.” Ambery, resinous, vanillic scents are a definite go-to staple for me in the winter and for an amber scent to treat the tried and true tropes of amber with nuance is exciting (and hard to find). Love the idea of earthy vetiver complementing the sweetness of vanilla and coumarin. Haven’t tried anything from this brand! Thanks for the generous draw. I’m in the US (Colorado).

  • Shame on me, I only now realize that my false memory used to mix this brand up with Le Monarch, so I didn’t look closer. I haven’t had the opportunity to try anything from Jeroboam yet. But now I am intrigued, I already can smell the vetiver coming up through that cosy layer. I’d love to win this to Germany, thank you for the draw!

  • I like the concept of perfume as universal language by using Esperanto names. This one sounds wonderfully smooth and creamy amber vanilla.

It is a scent that takes you by surprise and by the end one is transfixed in the luxurious and tempting nature of it. Jeroboam Ambra truly is a ‘Smooth Operator’ – an original and stirring take on the fantasy accord we think we know so well. I am fascinated by the notes especially Patchouli, Incense, tonka bean, vetiver and vanilla. A house that I am not familiar with but I am intrigued by nonetheless especially the perfumer and the creator Francois Henin. Thanks a million from the United Kingdom

Thanks a lot from the UK

  • Sounds beautiful. And wonderful article, well done to Karl, Jeroboam is a brand I am yet to fully discover. Irma, UK

  • Sade is so beautiful. Whatever you associate with Sade, I’m buying. Her voice is a perfect analogy for an amber scent. Jeroboam Ambra sounds amazing. I am in the US, and sadly have not tried Jeroboam.

  • Sade is so beautiful. Whatever you associate with Sade, I’m buying. Her voice is a perfect analogy for an amber scent. Jeroboam Ambra sounds amazing. I am in the US, and sadly have not tried Jeroboam.

  • I’ve been so curious about this brand for years, but haven’t had a chance to try it yet! Love their bottles.

Love the way that Karl describes Ambra here, that a vanilla/amber scent can be earthy and minty at once, while still maintaining a sweetness and creaminess. I’m very interested in trying it!

  • I’ve never heard of this fragrance house before. The fragrance sounds so alluring!! I absolutely love this description of the development of the scent – “By this time, the iridescent and ebullient aspects of Ambra have departed and swaths of Jeroboam’s signature musks begin to cocoon you. The outward appearance of cool aloofness suddenly betrayed by a warm heart.” Not to mention, I adore Sade and her music! This was such a great article!
    I live in the USA.

  • I loved the idea of perfume as a means of seduction…
I’ve never tried any perfume from this brand, but ambra always triggers my interest as it gives a feeling of warmth and mystery. “Cold nights contrast hot blood and heated emotions…” sounds like an invitation to me 🙂

  • Yet another brand with another interesting concept behind it. The goal of global unity was the motivator behind Esperanto, a language created over a century ago in my country, Poland. What a great idea, a perfume as a universal language to communicate emotions, feeling, mood etc. I have never had an opportunity to try any Jeroboam fragrance but already have some on my list to sample and test. I love elegant, black bottles and the font design is amazing. Ambra sounds like good choice for the winter. I live in Poland, EU.

  • I have not tried Jeroboam brand perfumes, yet, but Karl’s description of Ambra sounds very appealing indeed. The incense note sparks my interest and I hope I get to experience this lovely perfume from Jeroboam some day. Thanks for the review and draw. From USA.

  • Have never tried Jeroboam before. But I love amber scents, and when I read that his one goes against the grain of typical amber scents I was immediately intrigued. Also the combination of “warm” and herbs could describe one of my favorite combinations. Thanks!

    Living in EU

  • I’m familiar with all Jeroboam fragrance, excluding Floro . If I have to rate my favorite ones:
    1. Insulo
    2. Oriento
    3. Ambra / Miksado
My impressions of Ambra opening , are very different, compared to what Karl is getting. To me the fragrance starts with bergamot, and blast of spices, i perceive nutmeg and coriander.
I don’t get even traces of something carnal, animalic or minty . The white musk is clean, at least to me.
On the contrary to the opening, I do agree with Karl about Ambra base , rich and addictive indeed. The fragrance gets sweeter, and resinous, but the vetiver balances the composition well, not allowing it to go into gourmand territory.
I find quite interesting how me , and Karl are perceiving Ambra, we differ about the opening, and pretty much smell the same thing in the base
All profiles I already follow , Karl may be new to Cafleurebon, but I follow him on Instagram for years
    Thanks a lot

I have been dreaming of getting to know Jeroboam’s Ambra already, and now Kar’s brilliant review has only reinforced my longing… Vanina Muracciole is a talent out of this world, I have utmost respect for her. I have loved amber notes, tones and hues for a long time now and the more unique and non-obvious take on it, the better for me. Ambra sounds like a masterful blend of notes and the journey it takes the wearer on is nothing short of amazing. I haven’t tried Jeroboam before but have a few of their creations on my to-try list. Thank you from Ireland, EU

  • My interest was sparked upon reading “a cocktail of musks”. I have not tried Jeroboam before. US

  • Thanks for this review Karl!

Smooth Operator does suit perfectly with your description of Ambre. I love the song and in your review I can see how this is a smooth and sexy fragrance that takes you by surprise and leaves you transfixed in the luxurious and tempting nature of it. I look forward to trying this!

I have Verspero which to me is a fresh outdoor fragrance. I like a varied collection so the smooth and sexy Ambre would be a perfect counterpart in my collection when I cuddle up with my partner.

    Greetings from the UK.

  • Ambra has very interesting notes and everything I have tried so far composed by Vanina Muracciole was a like for me, so I am sure this one is not going to be an exception. Thanks. EU.

  • I haven’t tried any of Jeroboam fragrances before. But thanks to this review I know I should change it. What intrigued me the most about the brand is that they use “a coctail of musks”. I love sensual, intimate scents and musks definitely provide this factor.
    And I love amber scents.
Regarding esperanto influences on this brand – thanks to one of the commenters above I’ve just recalled that this langage was invented in Poland, my motherland.
So.. living in Poland I would like to take part in the draw.

  • This brand appreciates wit, wordplay, and strong fragrances. I find the scent journey that Karl takes us through is compelling and convincing that this is no amber retread. Instead is sounds seductive and long-lasting. I live in the US.

  • Karl does a fantastic job describing this fragrance. Though I have not tried any Jeroboam fragrance before, it is a perfume house that I surely want to try. To me, this fragrance sold me with the creamy blend of tonka bean and vanilla. The fact that it is a seductive perfume makes me want to try it right now. I will surely keep and eye on Ambra.
    I live in the U.S.

  • A flirtatious and seductive amber is right up my alley! The notes in Ambra are stellar and I’m interested in the use of a minty geranium in an otherwise warm and earthy blend. You had me at Sade! I’ve never tried anything from Jeroboam before. I’m in MD, USA.

  • The scent sounds wonderful, but the review locked “Smooth Operator” into my mind (one of those songs that, back in the ’80s, I heard constantly but haven’t heard in years…perfect earworm territory). I’ve also always been oddly fascinated by Esperanto. I’m in Oklahoma, USA. Thanks, as always, for the draw!

  • This was a very interesting article about Jeroboam. I had not realized each fragrance was named after a word in Esperanto, which is fascinating. Ambra sounds like a beautiful fragrance. I love Karl’s association with a starry night and midnight sky, as well the mentions of hot dark chocolate and Ambra resembling a “Smooth Operator”. I love vanilla and Peru Balsam, so I would love to try Ambra. Unfortunately, I have yet to try Jeroboam, although many of their fragrances pique my interest. I am located in the USA. Thank you for the article and the giveaway.

  • Any perfume that gives emphasis on smoothness is guaranteed to make me interested since I can’t stand rough edges. I’m genuinely curious how Jeroboam has treated the stated notes to this effect. How wonderful to draw a parallel with Sade’s song! I miss her voice. I have tried Hauto in the past and liked it and plan to try Insulo as well. Greetings from Greece!

  • I love amber fragrances and based on Karl’s review, this one has an interesting twist to it, so naturally now I have to try it…

  • Karl wrote a great review, a pleasure to read! I loved how he used the mr. Henin’s analogy of “perfume as a weapon” to write a review! I agree wholheartedly, and the use of smooth operator as a leitmotif, I thought, was very inspired! Great review!

As for the house, I tried Vespero and Origino, both of which I absolutely adored!

I live in Croatia, EU and I followe cafleurebon on Instagram – my handle is il.dolce.papi

  • I don’t have a perfume from this brand. I have been wanting to buy GOZO for a long time, it is very interesting for me. AMBRA also intrigues me, I love all “warm” scents, amber, sandalwood, patchouli. I think the creations of this maison (extrait) are all very, very beautiful. Congratulations to the new talent
    of Perfumery.

  • This sounds delectable! I love ambers, I love extracts, and I too love using perfume as a weapon! I would be so excited to try this. Thank you for the review! Writing from the EU.

  • Thanks for a great review, Karl! I haven’t tried any Jeroboam fragrance yet and I’m excited for this draw. I love musk on fragrances and Jeroboam having muscs enigmatiques’ accord, a cocktail of musks, on his entire collection is amazing! Thanks for the draw. – CA, USA

This sounds gorgeous. Ambers are one of my favorite fragrance families (if not my overall favorite) and an earthy creamy rendering of that definitely appeals.
Please do enter me, I’m in the US.

  • Interesting amber scent. I’d like to get a chance to try this “Smooth Operator” haven’t explored this house yet. Thanks, Ca

  • Bryant Worley says:

What sparks my interest from Karl’s review is first, this:”To treat powerful ingredients like these with such delicate diligence is no mean feat and the impact is an intoxicating blend that delights., and then this: “We are left with an extremely alluring perfume that in tandem with the skin is quite flirtatious and seductive – melting one’s memories of the fresh opening and embracing gold, lustrous tones.”

Unfortunately, I have not tried any Jeroboam’s yet.

I live in Waldorf, Maryland, USA

  • I would like to try this collaboration between Jeroboam , Jovoy , and Vanina Muracciole .
Karl Topham take on Ambra reminded me of Paris, eating the traditional Yellow vanilla cake, with chocolate frosting , and later on just having a walk on Champs-Èlysèes with my girlfriend. I miss Paris.
I am familiar with Jeroboam , and to me Insulo is the best one. Top quality vanilla fragrance , and as a Pastry Chef I know vanilla.
Appreciate the review, and the giveaway campaign.

Beautiful review. I have not yet had the opportunity to sample this house but I am dying to. These notes sounds incredible. I have been loving herbal scents lately. The notes in this sounds gorgeous. Thank you for the draw, from the US.

  • Michael Prince says:

Karl’s review of Jeroboam Ambra interests me because I am a huge fan of ambery fragrances, but this fragrance is so much more than that with it’s unique complexity being perfumed by none other than Vanina Muracciole. I love how Karl describes the intricate details on how and why Ambra was created based on Sade’s Smooth Operator and how each fragrance in the collection is named after a word in Esperanto. I would love to try this fragrance for myself. I haven’t tried anything from Jeroboam yet. I am from the USA.

  • This is described so provocative, love how Karl puts images and emotions into you…
But this is what intrigued me; “… is quite flirtatious and seductive – melting one’s memories of the fresh opening and embracing gold, lustrous tones”.
    I’m from Croatia.

  • Really liked the review of Karl! the description of the fragrance seems amazing! The scent journey of this scent is so vivid in his words, and share with us the purpose of the intent of Francois Henin when he started the brand Jeroboam and “create the most potent and sensual fragrances available”. Madame Muracciole is able to do it with an bergamot and geranium unexpected opening and transition to an ‘amber’ scent with the help of patchouli and Peru balsam to finally be creamy musky with the help of vanilla, tonka bean and the earthy vetiver. A surprising scent that flirts and seduces us like the magical voice of Sade . Never tried Jerobaom before, but the review sparked my interest. I live in Spain, EU.

  • verdassenzio says:

seems interesting the contrast with incense, Peru balsam and patchouli (if we look at the opening). seems like a quite particular ambery fragrance, faceted and not monotematic; curios to know how eyerything balances. I do have tried Gozo before. Cheers from Italy!

  • Never tried anything from this house, but I do like a few by Vanina Muracciole so I am confident that this is going to be really nice. Thank you. Europe.

  • If you’re a fragrance enthusiast you know Jovoy , but Jeroboam I think not many people know about , me included. I can easily chatter about Jovoy perfumes , but I have no experience with Jeroboam.
Ambra is intriguing to me , because it’s sexy and playful , but not carnal .
Smoky and minty start is uncommon, but the “creamy blend of tonka bean and vanilla” drydown is what I’m actually looking for.
    Thanks for the draw

I have discovered Jeroboam because I often buy online from Jovoy – given the impressive reference they have. And, with my purchase, they sent me a sample of Gozo…it was love at first sight and I have recently bought the bottle. I have also samples of Boha and Floro and they are both amazing. Karl is right, Jeroboam is an amazing brand, Francois Henin has definitely managed to create sexy and addictive perfumes, that you of course want to share with others since they are so good and you want them to enjoy such beauty, but that – even when they stay close to the skin – you are happy to wear for your own senses and comfort. Ambra’s notes sound amazing and I am sure that it is yet another masterpiece, it would be amazing to be the lucky winner! Greetings from Italy

  • I had not realized the founder’s view on perfume as a “weapon for those who know how to use it,” but I can appreciate it based on the house’s general focus on musks. This one sounds like an interesting departure I’d enjoy. I’ve really liked the three tried from from Jeroboam, and will seek this out in any case! NC USA

The notes sound fantastic, I love fragrances that strive for sensuality. “Seductively smooth”, fresh but warm, flirtatious, lustrous tones and especially describing a talent in such inviting way caught my eye in this review. Really would like to try it, especially since Jeroboam is not accessible where I live.
    Greetings from Estonia, EU.

  • I love luxurious and seductive scents, especially for this time of year, and Jeroboam Ambra sounds exactly that. I I’m really intrigued by the musk accord that is present in each fragrance. I haven’t tried anything from Jeroboam before but I definitely want to now! I am located in the USA

  • I need to sample Jeroboam !
La Liturgie des Heures , Psychedelique , Les Jeux sont Faits Jovoy and Private Label are the Jovoy fragrances i know . Les Jeux sont Faits i found to be the best smelling one of the four , $180 is what i paid for 100ml bottle from Luckyscent.
Jeroboam sibling i have no experience with , other than seeing a few videos on Youtube , and the reviews on Cafleurebon.
Ambra i think is sexy and seductive , grown up fragrance, in a special bottle. Deep and rich fragrances are my go-to.
I like the name “Ambra” , Esperanto is artificially created language in 19th century, all i can remember about it from my high school days .

  • Some of my favorite fragrances are “amber” fragrances, and I’d like to see what the “unexpected opening” of this fragrance is like. I haven’t had a chance yet to try anything from this fragrance house. I live in the U.S.A. Thanks for the giveaway opportunity.

  • sephrenia300 says:

Fantastic review Karl! What sparks my interest based on Karl’s review is his description of Ambra and an unexpectedly cool and crystaline amber, with sparkling bergamot and cold geranium bringing forth the impression of cold nights to contrast with smokey and heated incense, earthy patchouli, and warm luscious vanilla. I love a good contrasting an unexpected fragrance and Ambra sounds like a really unusual and striking one. I live in the US. I haven’t tried any Jeroboam fragrances yet but I’m really eager to!

  • The parent company I know, Psychedelique is beyond gorgeous, one of the best patchouli scents ever made , but Jeroboam is new to me. Musky fragrance with lots of patchouli, vanilla and some vetiver , I would like to experience. I’ll gladly wear Ambra on all occasions , its versatile and quite attractive.
Thank you Karl Topham , Jovoy Paris and Jeroboam

  • I know i’m late with ~10 min , but please allow me to enter .
Francois Henin is doing everything right, from A to B. Jovoy is now the best boutique worldwide, Jovoy fragrances are awesome, and Jeroboam project is different , but also successful , true “Smooth Operator” . Insulo stands out to me, and my taste , in my opinion the best Jeroboam fragrance .
Ambra is well blended musky scent , with nice amount of patchouli, vanilla , and certain levels of coziness.
