When the sun has rubbed vermillion
into the blessed mountain’s hair
Spring-time hills delight in their scent;
eyes drink in the scene to the music of birdsong,
every day there is a wedding:
very soon the light will come
on a golden morning.

The very first encounter with Hima Jomo Spring in Bome filled my soul with adulatory song. I was not able to smell Master perfumer Delphine Thierrys new line, created with founders Vittoria Jiaxin Liu and Randry Glorieux while I was Esxence 2022 – but through the thoughtfulness of Indigo Perfumery (who recently sent me samples), I wondered how Hima Jomo could have escaped my notice.

Hima Jomo means ‘Holy Mother’ in Tibetan; to date, this Grasse-produced fragrance line consists of a celebration of Nature’s four seasons in the richly diverse Himalayas of Tibet. Each Eau de Parfum is exquisite, with between 95-99% natural materials – including several unique to their geographical region. Mme. Thierry excels in her employment of botanical materials, as your own nose will attest. Hima Jomo Spring in Bome honors a small valley village filled each year with vernal lushness, wildly floral and sylvan – and unlike so many fragrances which abound currently, it takes the wearer on a journey which develops marvelous twists and turns over the passage of time.

Hima Jomo Spring in Bome is as much a spiritual perfume as it is a sensual one. For me, it invokes Green Tara of the Khadira Fragrant Forest, that beloved Tibetan deity of nourishing, nurturing Mother Earth who is the embodiment of compassion and wisdom: we must approach her with an open heart and mind. She is recognized by both Hindu and Buddhist religions (the two most prominent faith systems in Nepal) as the one who offers succor and protection from all the unfortunate circumstances which may befall us in this samsaric world – those indefinitely repeated cycles of birth, misery, and death caused by karma. This is the profoundly sacred aspect of Spring in Bome.

The sensuality of Hima Jomo Spring in Bome arises from its glorious physicality: thanks to the precious resources available from Maison Robertet, this 96% natural composition rewards our fifth sense with precious aromatics indigenous to Nepal itself. When you consider that this country has eight climate zones which run the gamut from tropical to alpine, the biodiversity potential alone amazes. Thanks to Mme. Thierry’s shared passion, we are privy to the headiness of tuberose and ginger lily (aka hedychium) and the rhizomal mystery of Himalayan spikenard, aka jatamansi (beloved of olden times, including the Old Testament) – with its musky herbalcy tinged with a sweet cedarwood, ginger, black pepper and even turmeric earthiness. Papyrus and vetiver are also native plants, with the former possessing a little drier, grassier verdancy. Peach blossom is honeyed and mouthwatering; wild peaches grow well in the Himalayas, their blossoms a very harbinger of the eternal return. The soft silvery quality of iris, another flowering plant which thrives in southern Tibet; geraniums grow wild here as well, with their lovely rose-intoned herbal nature.

The nascent greenness of a new season is echoed in other fragrant participants: Iran’s bitterly beautiful galbanum resin, the garden’s sweet anisic tarragon, those cherished ‘tears of Chios’ otherwise known as mastic, or lentisque – with their turpenic, piney freshness like that of the evergreens of Nepal. Ever-present moss of the forest floor, deep and cooling, moist beneath the feet. All this richness is a balm, the pure seduction of all senses alert and responsive. Finally, a perfume where forest and flowers consummate their communion, arousing a sense of wonder and discovery in the process. I find it almost unbearably lovely, complex and compelling as it unfolds in its own time, revealing layers of fascination.

Notes: galbanum, tarragon, lentisque (mastic), hedychium (Himalayan, aka ginger lily), peach blossom, geranium leaf, tuberose, iris, vetiver, papyrus, moss, jatamansi (Himalayan nards, aka spikenard)

Samples thoughtfully provided by Indigo Perfumery – many thanks! What a wonderful find.  My nose is my own…

  • The bottle is so cool, but what really interests me is the sense of place as expressed in the way the perfumer uses ingredients found in a particular place. Also, this perfume sounds so GREEN and evocative of spring–I’m sold! Thanks for the generous giveaway!

  • I am so curious about notes that are provided by materials that are from Nepal. And the range of climates in Nepal certainly leads to many different possibilities. Who knew that Peaches could grow there?

  • This sounds beautiful! I love Mastic in fragrance, and coupled with the oakmoss, and galbanum it has to be great. Thank you for the draw! In the US.

I received samples of the Hima Jomo line from Indigo yesterday. I would try Spring in Bome now, were I not already marinating in Papillon’s Salome. I will have to sample Hima Jomo’s line tomorrow. The bottles are lovely. So was this review!
    Thank you, dear Ida. USA

  • Ida- what a gorgeous, accurate review!
I nodded in agreement when I read “Hima Jomo Spring in Bome is as much a spiritual perfume as it is a sensual one.”
I think each perfume in the whole line “is as much a spiritual perfume as it is a sensual one.”

  • I, like everyone else, am intrigued by the Nepal ingredients. It sounds really interesting.

  • Hima Jomo Spring in Bome looks like a great tribute to Tibet. It also uses natural ingrdients from Roberter that are famous for high quality supply. And being a tribute, the inclusion of galbanum is a wise decision. The fragrance seems to have a green, herbal touch. I am in US.

  • A perfume with marvelous twists and turns sounds good to me. Being a fan of Greek food, I am always searching for mastic in fragrance which doesn’t happen often. Those last sentences of flowers and forest in communion and the fragrance being unbearingly lovely with layers of fascination has my interest for sure!! poetic. Thank you so much for the chance to win this beauty. I must go to Indigo website, I haven’t been there in awhile to see what is new. USA.

I’m interested in the tarragon and hedychium. Love tarragon but haven’t seen it in a perfume before and would like to see how that interacts with the florals.
Thank you for the giveaway! USA

  • Beautiful, evocative review! What interests me most about this perfume is the use of spikenard – I’m curious how this strong material works into the composition. -Greetings from the US.

  • A natural perfume composed of ingredients found in the Himalayas is fascinating. There are so many new-to-me notes like hedychium, jatamansi, papyrus and peach blossom, which I’ve never encountered in fragrances before, The composition sounds like a lovely jaunt through a mountain in bloom in the spring. I’m in MD, USA.

  • Although I love a range of perfumes, my favorites smell like landscapes or have a strong sense of place. I’m especially excited by perfumes that smell like places I have never been — like Tibet. Ida’s review gorgeously evokes this perfume’s biodiverse landscape.

  • I loved this review by Ida. The concept behind this fragrance, how it wants to represent mother earth is just mayestic. I think with this fragrance I can feel one with the nature. I also loved all these amazing exotic notes like tarragon, hedychium, etc.

  • This perfume sounds really thrilling! I can’t believe there are so many naturals in it, and I love how it evokes a place and time with all these plants that are found in that region. I had no idea of the multitude of microclimates and diversity of plants there. Forest, flowers, and spring indeed!

I live in the USA. Thanks for the giveaway

I’m really curious what a fragrance so natural smells like. And has already been stated…8 climate zones!!! Wow. I’ve learned something new today reading this review. And to that i say thank you for not only introducing me to this fragrance but also for expanding my wisdom of geography ever so slightly.

  • What I liked about Hima Joma Spring in Bome is that it has 96% natural ingredients. Also, the fact that it has geographically unique scents from Nepal will make Hima Joma Spring in Bome one of a kind perfume. I ahve never tried this brand before, but I am curious about it and the other perfumes mentioned by Ida in Hima Joma line. Thanks for the review and draw. From USA.

  • Thanks for the fantastic review Ida! It was so interesting to read about this fragrance.
The fragrance has a wonderfully meditative aspect to it, with all these green and woody notes, especially the galbanum and jatamansi. It’s also wonderful that this fragrance pays homage to Nepal, which is such a special place, both in terms of bio diversity and spirituality.

    cheers from wi, usa

  • Thank you for sharing your knowledge on Green Tara. As a gardener, Mother Earth is dear to me. I’d love to experience Spring in Bome, with its wonderful notes of tarragon, ginger lily, geranium leaf and moss. On my wishlist it goes. Mich USA

  • Jatamansi is an incredible scent, and the whole composition sounds rich, yet bitter and deeply composed. I love green fragrances more than anything and I’m intrigued by the ginger lily note—not something I’ve smelled before. Thanks for the lovely review, Ida, and for the giveaway! IL, USA.

What interests me about Ida’s review of Hima Jomo Spring in Bome is learning about the region of Tibet in the Himalayas and how the 4 seasons are incorporated into their fragrances. I love how they use 95-99% natural ingredients in their fragrances. I love how Delphine Thierry has captured the essence of spring in this fragrance. I am from Ohio, USA.

  • Regis Monkton says:

I’m interested in trying this fragrance for multiple reasons, e.g. it has a lot of notes/ingredients which I’ve never tried before, I can like natural perfumery, and I want to see what the precious aromatics indigenous to Nepal are like. I live in the U.S.A.

  • I’m so curious what Hima Jomo managed to achieve with 96% natural materials—Spring in Bome sounds lovely. I’m drawn to the grassy notes (papyrus and vetiver), the herbal florals, the use of tarragon (which can really stand out in green perfumes), and the fact that Ida noted the rich forest notes and florals feel truly bonded here (which can be difficult to pull of). Thank you for the review, Ida.

    I’m in the midwest, USA.

  • What intrigued me about Hima Jomo Spring in Bome review by Ida was initially a fragrance coined spiritual but also sensual. Thank you for the giveaway! CA, USA.

  • Wonderful review Ida! What intrigues me about Hima Jomo Spring in Bome based on Ida’s review is that not only is each perfume made of between 95-99% natural materials but also that each perfume highlights several natural materials unique to their geographical region. I adore natural perfumes and those that combine synthetics but are very high in natural materials. I also find the idea of a perfume with “terroir” terribly appealing and intriguing. Spring in Bome with its indigenous Nepalese aromatics that span so many different climate zones sounds precious and sensual with its beautiful and meditative greenery sounds absolutely perfect to me. I live in the US.
